A stargazing app sells $99.99 coins: Ceno hit the Jordan grossing chart, and it wasn't the stars
What it is An iPhone app with a shell of a star map and stargazing community that actually makes money from 18+ private chats with strangers, selling coins ($0.99–99.99).
Why it took off It sells chat with strangers in the Middle East and South Asia, not stargazing. One Indonesian small-company account per pack, a reskin to pass review, paid acquisition and fake ratings, aiming at low-bar small-country grossing charts, with one team running several packs across different interest themes.
DHow you could follow it Not advised to copy. What's worth taking away is the method for reading the charts and one market signal: people in the Middle East and South Asia will pay for private social chat. If you build here, build an openly labeled, compliant dating product that takes payment inside Apple.

On Oct 23, a user in the US gave an app called Ceno: Stargazing Community a 1-star review. The title was Expensive, and the body was one line: "The token is expensive." Why buy tokens to look at stars? Digging into that line, Ceno turns out not to be a stargazing tool that gained traction. It is a 18+ stranger chat product wrapped in a "stargazing community" shell. On Nov 6 it ranked #3 on Lebanon's Lifestyle grossing chart, ahead of Tinder and Bumble. This piece covers what it actually sells, how this wave of growth happened, how many identical packs sit behind it, and why we don't recommend following it.
The store page talks about the starry sky, but the price list says something else
On Ceno's App Store page, the pitch reads well: a live star map that switches between visible light, infrared, X-ray and gamma-ray views; countdowns to the Perseids and Lyrids meteor showers, down to the minute; an observation log; and an AI-built weekly stargazing plan based on whether you live in a city, the countryside, by the sea or in the mountains. Only at the end comes "Community & Chat", where you can "private message other stargazers to plan a viewing together".
Scroll down and three things don't line up (App Store US store, 11-06):
- Age rating 18+, with content flagged as "Messaging and Chat / User-Generated Content / Social Media". A star-map tool would normally be rated 4+.
- The only in-app purchase is coins, in 9 tiers from $0.99 to $99.99. Star maps, meteor showers and the observation log don't use coins. The only thing coins pay for is chat.
- "Used to track you: Identifiers", meaning it reads the advertising ID for ad attribution. It's buying traffic.
The seller is PT UTAMA BINA JAKA, an Indonesian company. The developer name is just "ceno", and the only app under it is this one. The company website, utamas.com, calls itself "data visualization solutions, since 2015", which has nothing to do with this app and looks like a template site. The app's site, ceno.love, went up in Jul 28 and is just a landing page plus privacy and terms pages. The app listed in Aug 19, English only. In Oct 22 it shipped version 1.1.0, with the release note "bug fix and improvement" and nothing else.
Who it's charting next to
Put it back on the chart and the picture is clear. 11-06 Lifestyle Top Grossing:
| Country | Ceno's rank | Top of the same chart |
|---|---|---|
| Lebanon | #3 (#154 on overall Top Grossing) | Tinder, Bumble, Ceno, Imou… Badoo |
| Jordan | #7 (#134 on overall Top Grossing) | Tinder, Bumble, Berk, PURE, Muzz, AlKhattaba, Ceno, Raya, Bello |
| Pakistan | #7 (#143 on overall Top Grossing) | Muzz, Bumble, Tinder, Imou, PURE, Berk, Ceno, Nana (video voice chat) |
| Bahrain | #5 (#146 on overall Top Grossing) | |
| Turkey | #13 | |
| Indonesia | #23 |
Dating and stranger-chat apps sit above and below it. The real stargazing apps, Sky Guide, Star Walk and SkyView, don't appear above it on any of these charts. Paying users treat it like Tinder or Muzz.
It charts in 87 countries as 11-06, 57 of them on the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. Sounds big, but in small markets like Jordan, Lebanon or Bahrain, a Lifestyle top-10 spot may only take a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a day (my inference, not verified). Being charted in 87 countries doesn't mean the revenue is big.
The day of Oct 30
Ceno's global rating count was 10-28 on 19 and 10-29 on 21, and 10-30 added 118 ratings in a single day. After that it went +82, +74, +37, +29, +17, +19, +11 a day, reaching 408 on 11-06. A spike and then a slow fade is not how word of mouth looks.
The same day, another app, Berk: Ski Tracker & Community, jumped from +0 the day before to +139, then +94, +55, +30, with almost the same decay rhythm. Two "unrelated" apps spiking on the same day points to one coordinated operation.
Look at the reviews themselves. In the Vietnam store, 41 ratings, and 10-30 added 35 in one day. Most of the 5-star reviews are one or two words: Turkish "İyi / İyi" (good / good), "Süper / Çok iyi Kroekejffçfm Föfmföfööf" (the second half is random keystrokes), Indonesian "Bagus banget / Keren" (very good / cool), Vietnamese "Vip / Oke vip", Mexican "Oh damn / Yes". A five-star review in the Pakistan store for Ceno reads "Recommend / Soo good app", and Berk has one titled "Recommend / Soo good", all dated around 10-29. Not one of the 408 reviews mentions stars, meteor showers or constellations. This looks like a batch of task workers posting ratings for a group of apps at the same time (inferred, high confidence).
Note the order: 10-28 it was already charting in 84 countries, before this wave of ratings. The ratings were used to pad an app that was already buying traffic and already had paying users, to lift its store ranking. They weren't why it took off.
Identical apps, at least eight
Under Ceno's App Store page, "You might also like" lists no stargazing apps, only the same kind of app: Berk (skiing), Candra (hobby skills), Bello (nightlife), Davo (Shiba Inu stickers), Olen (rowing), Nook (hiking), Mitu Video Chat, Dico, Renna Live Stream, Relike Dating. People who buy Ceno also buy these, and users move around this cluster of apps.
Combined across storefronts, 11-06:
| Package | Theme | Seller | Launched | Countries charted | Score | Best result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Davo | Shiba Inu stickers | PT DIGITAL FUN JAYA | 06-08 | 21 | 230 | Egypt Lifestyle Top Grossing #18 |
| Nook | Hiking | LOGICORE TECHNOLOGY LTD | 07-14 | 54 | 192 | Jordan category #30 |
| Ceno | Stargazing | PT UTAMA BINA JAKA | 08-19 | 87 | 408 | Lebanon category #3 |
| Renna | Live streaming | CELESTIA TECHNOLOGY LTD | 08-27 | 86 | 120 | Overall Top Grossing #151 |
| Berk | Skiing | PT SANDI DAYA GUNA | 08-28 | 101 | 402 | Overall Top Grossing #73 |
| Candra | Hobby skills | PT SAGE LINK TECH | 08-30 | 58 | 547 | Overall Top Grossing #156 |
| Bello | Nightlife | BOLTRIX TECHNOLOGY LTD | 09-04 | 44 | 1,021 | Overall Top Grossing #182 |
| Olen | Rowing | PT PLATFORM USAHA PINTAR | 09-30 | 91 | 197 | Egypt category #14 |
Ceno and Berk share too much to be coincidence: both are published by Indonesian PT companies, both host their privacy policies on "name.love" domains (ceno.love, berk.love), both price their 9 tier coins identically, both shipped 10-22 on the same day 1.1.0, and their release notes are the same sentence. Olen and Nook use that exact same release note too. At least these four are from one team; whether the others in the same recommendation cluster are the same company is uncertain.
The play: pick an obscure hobby (stargazing, skiing, hiking, rowing), write a convincing "interest community" pitch to get through review, attach each app to a newly registered small-company developer account so one ban doesn't take the others down, and run the same coins-based private chat monetization behind all of them, targeting users who want to talk to people. Who runs it hasn't been verified. Given industry norms, it's most likely an overseas social-app team using Indonesian company accounts (inferred).
What you see after opening it may not be a star map
Ceno's own real reviews are few. A few reviews on its sister app Berk show what's underneath:
"The app is AI-generated, there are no real skiers, just a few empty shells." (Berk US store, 1 stars, 10-08)
"Can't use it, nobody to get to know. This app is totally different from my friend's." (Berk US store, 1 stars, 10-30)
Same app, two people opening it and seeing different things. This is the common A-side/B-side pattern: review and some users see the interest community, while other users see a dating and chat app.
There's also a Turkish review (Berk, 1 stars, 10-29): "I paid by EFT bank transfer, they never credited my tokens, and they demanded my ID number and birthday. Don't trust them." This suggests the template uses bank transfer top-ups in Turkey to bypass the App Store. There's no direct evidence on whether Ceno has an A/B-side setup or off-store payments; the conclusion comes from the sister app on the same template (inferred).
It's also unclear whether the people on the other end of the chat are real hosts, AI, or dead accounts.
Where users come from
| Channel | What we saw | Is it confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Paid acquisition | Privacy labels list "Identifiers used to track you across apps"; it charts in 80 countries, concentrated in the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America | Has ad-buying capacity, creatives not found |
| Store "You might also like" | The recommendation cluster is all similar apps, and users move between them | Yes |
| Targets small countries to climb Top Grossing | Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, Pakistan Top Grossing 130–150, Lifestyle top 10 | Yes |
| Rating padding | 10-30 and Berk both +118 / +139 the same day, one- or two-word praise, gibberish, duplicated titles across apps | Yes (inferred, high confidence) |
| Content, creators, media | No TikTok results for "Ceno stargazing" or "ceno app", nothing on X, just auto-generated pages from data platforms online | None |
Few people know about it, but that's not because the opportunity went unnoticed. These kinds of apps never publish public content or word of mouth in the first place.
What about the stargazing shell itself?
If the "stargazing community" angle caught your interest, look at the stargazing category first (US rating counts, 11-06): Night Sky about 498k, Sky Guide about 379k, Star Walk 2 both versions combined about 160k, SkyView Lite about 19k, plus open-source Stellarium and SkySafari. All are 2011–2016-year-old products, long saturated. Ceno has no presence in there at all. Its growth has nothing to do with stargazing.
If it were you
D. Worth knowing about, but don't follow it. It got where it is through a full distribution playbook. The most valuable part of that playbook is out of your reach, and the rest is a minefield of account bans.
Why you can't follow it: The real money comes from 18+ strangers chatting. That requires people on the other end of the chat (hosts, operators, or AI characters), a stack of company developer accounts you can swap in and out, a paid acquisition team, and acceptance that each app gets banned within a few months. The team behind this has already run at least eight apps in parallel. Picking up a new hobby theme and launching another one takes them about a week. The A and B sides violate App Store 2.3.1 / 3.2(f), and off-platform transfers for top-ups violate 3.1.1. Sister apps already have complaints of "paid by transfer but no credit, and they ask for your ID number."
Who it fits: Only teams already running overseas voice or video chat that have their own host supply and account matrix. If they read this, the market signal they get is that Lifestyle Top Grossing in Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Pakistan has a low bar. Ranking next to Tinder and Muzz is not hard.
Who it doesn't fit: Indie developers and small teams who want to build a real product. If you build a genuine stargazing community, you'll be competing in a tools category that has been saturated for a decade. If you copy its monetization, you'll run into Apple review and payment compliance.
What you can take away:
- A test to apply when scanning charts: a new app, 18+ ratings, only sells coins, Lifestyle Top Grossing across several countries, a one-line update note, and a seller that is a new Indonesian PT or Hong Kong LTD. Put these together and it's almost certainly a chat-disguise app, not a hobby category that took off.
- To find the whole team behind an app, check the "You Might Also Like" section on its store page. It's more useful than searching for the developer name.
- Middle East and South Asia spend willingly on stranger social apps, and there are few local compliant products. If you want to build there, build something upfront: state clearly that it's for dating, follow local norms (Muzz is the precedent), and take payments through Apple.
What would mean you read it wrong: ① Ceno and the Berk cluster are still live six months after launch, not pulled by Apple, and reviews start to include people genuinely talking about stargazing or skiing. That would suggest the "hobby community + coins" shell itself retains users and is worth a second look. ② Someone runs a transparent, compliant hobby social product that stays in Lifestyle Top Grossing for three months in those same countries.

- Confirmed Fake / incentivized reviews: 10-30 and Berk each gained +118 / +139 on the same day. 5 five-star reviews are one or two words (İyi, bagus, Vip, and a garbled Kroekejffçfm). In the Pakistan storefront, two apps had the same review title "Recommend / Soo good". Vietnam received 35 reviews in a single day.
- Inferred Paid acquisition: The App Store privacy label declares Identifiers used for cross-app tracking (there's an attribution SDK). - Inferred Content, creators, SEO, media: No relevant content found on TikTok, X (x-radar), or the web.
Why Ceno: Stargazing Community (iOS 6795425766) got traction
Bottom line: Ceno isn't a "stargazing app that took off." Based on the available signals, it's a social disguise app built on a "hobby community shell + 18+ private chats selling coins" model. It launched in batches alongside same-template apps like Berk (skiing), Nook (hiking), Olen (paddleboarding), Candra (hobby skills), and Bello (nightlife). In the Middle East and South Asia, it ranks in Lifestyle Top Grossing next to Tinder, Bumble, and Muzz, and what it actually sells is stranger chat. The surge in its October 30 rating count came from the same-day push as its sister app Berk, combined with volume-boosting and fake reviews. The shell itself has no differentiation. What got it up the charts is the distribution playbook: disguise to get through review, multiple accounts to spread risk, and targeting small countries' charts to climb the ranks.

2. Data: what "taking off" actually looked like
All from the appstore database (daily lookups and chart data by storefront).
- Rating counts across all storefronts: 10-28 was 19,10-29, 21,10-30 was 139 (+118 in one day), and then each day after it added +82, +74, +37, +29, +17, +19, +11,11-06, reaching 408. The overall pattern is a single spike followed by decay, not a natural growth curve.
- Sister app Berk's curve is identical: 10-29 went up by 0, and 10-30 went up by 139, followed by +94, +55, +30, +19, +12, +8, +20. Both apps started rising on the same day and decayed the same way, which points to a single coordinated operation (app_day in the database, 6803754196).
- Ratings per store (11-06): us 47, id 45, eg 41, vn 41, tr 30, br 29, in 28, ph 27, mx 26, my 23, pk 21, sa 20, gb 10; every other store is single digits. Of the 41 Vietnam entries, 10-30 charted 35 of them in a single day, then barely moved.
- Chart presence: By 10-28, it was already charting in 84 storefronts (before the rating spike). 11-06 is now in 87 storefronts. Of those, 57 are on Lifestyle Top Grossing and 30 are on Lifestyle Top Free.
- Overall Top Grossing: Jordan 134, Pakistan 143, Bahrain 146, Lebanon 154 (11-06). Since 10-28, Lebanon has bounced between #96 and #163 on the overall Top Grossing chart.
- Lifestyle Top Grossing (11-06): Lebanon #3, Jordan #7, Pakistan #7, Turkey #13, Indonesia #23. The US goes back and forth between #107 and #137 on Lifestyle Top Grossing.
- Who it's charting next to: 11-06 In Jordan's Lifestyle Top Grossing top 12, the order is Tinder, Bumble, Berk, PURE, Muzz, AlKhattaba, Ceno, Raya, Bello…; in Lebanon it's Tinder, Bumble, Ceno, Imou, YarnPal, …, Badoo; in Pakistan it's Muzz, Bumble, Tinder, Imou, PURE, Berk, Ceno, Nana (Live Video | Voice Chat)…. Real stargazing apps (Sky Guide, Star Walk, SkyView) aren't anywhere near the top of these charts. Its paying users come from the same pool as dating and stranger-chat apps.
Small-country Lifestyle Top Grossing charts have a low bar. Ceno reaches the top 10 in Jordan, Lebanon and Pakistan, and a few dozen to a few hundred dollars a day is enough to get there (inference, not verified). So "charted in 84 storefronts" doesn't mean big revenue.
3. Where users come from and what they do once they're in
Reviews (Apple RSS plus the review table in the library)
- Almost all of the 5-star reviews are one or two words: Turkish "İyi / İyi", "Çok güzel / Hayran kaldım", "Süper / Çok iyi Kroekejffçfm Föfmföfööf" (the second half is random keyboard mashing); Indonesian "bagus / sip", "Bagus banget / Keren"; Vietnamese "Vip / Oke vip", "hap dân / ok lam"; Malaysian "Hdjej / Good"; Pakistani "Recommend / Soo good app", "Nice 😊 / Beuty"; Mexican "Oh damn / Yes". Not one review mentions stars, meteor showers or zodiac signs.
- Ceno's Pakistan review "Recommend / Soo good app" and Berk's "Recommend / Soo good" have identical titles, with dates next to each other (10-29). Likely the same batch of people doing paid review tasks (inference).
- Real user voices: Ceno US 1-star "Expensive — The token is expensive" (10-23), 5-star "I love this site" (10-30). Its sister app Berk has US reviews like "Awesome app get to meet new people", a 1-star "Ai generated app. No real riders. Just few stubs" (10-08), and a 1-star "App doesn't work, no people to meet. App is completely different then my friends app" (10-30). That last one suggests different users see different interfaces, the so-called A/B face: review and some users see an interest community, while others see a stranger-chat app.
- Berk Turkey 1-star review (10-29): "Eft havale yaptım tokensleri yüklemediler kimlik bilgilerinizi illa istiyorlar tc doğum tarihi sakın güvenmeyin", meaning "I paid by EFT bank transfer, they never loaded my tokens, and they insist on my ID details (Turkish national ID number, date of birth). Don't trust them, don't fill it in." This shows the template uses a bank-transfer top-up channel in Turkey that goes around the App Store, which App Store rules explicitly prohibit (3.1.1).
Growth channels
| Channel | Evidence | Verification status |
|---|---|---|
| Fake reviews / incentivized ratings | 10-30 and its sister app Berk both gained on the same day, +118 / +139; the reviews are all one or two words with garbled text, and titles are duplicated across apps; Vietnam alone brought in 35 a day | Yes (strong inference) |
| Paid acquisition (with attribution SDK) | The store privacy label says "Identifiers used for cross-app tracking"; it charts in 84+ storefronts at once, concentrated in MENA, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America. Not found in the Meta ad library (which only tracks a list of products), and no related videos in TikTok search | Partly (attribution is there, creatives not found) |
| In-store "similar apps" cross-promotion | The App Store "You Might Also Like" (customers also bought) is full of apps from the same template: Berk, Candra, Bello, Davo, Olen, Mitu Video Chat, Dico, Nook, Renna Live Stream, Relike Dating. Users are flowing between these apps, which means they're the same people looking for chat partners | Yes |
| Targets small countries to climb Top Grossing | Reached overall Top Grossing #130–150 in Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain and Pakistan, and top 10 in Lifestyle Top Grossing | Yes |
| Content / creators / SEO / media | TikTok searches for "Ceno stargazing" and "ceno app" return no related videos; x-radar shows 0 posts in the last 60 days; the web only has auto-generated pages from AppBrain, Appfigures, Similarweb and Sensor Tower | None |
| Off-store payments | A Berk user in Turkey said they topped up via EFT bank transfer | Confirmed for the sister app; Ceno itself not verified |
4. Competitors
What it sells has two layers: the one it writes in the store (stargazing), and the one it actually earns from (18+ stranger chat selling coins).
Surface niche: stargazing / star maps (iTunes 2026-11-06 US ratings count)
- Night Sky (iCandi, 2011): about 498k ratings
- Sky Guide (Fifth Star Labs, 2013): about 379k
- Star Walk 2 (Vito, 2014/2016): Pro about 67k, Plus about 96k
- SkyView Lite (Terminal Eleven, 2011): about 19k
- Stellarium (open source and mobile) and SkySafari are long-established too
- Communities: Cloudy Nights forum, r/Astronomy, AstroBin
This niche is saturated, and Ceno has no presence in it: not one review talks about stargazing, and it doesn't appear on any stargazing chart.
Real niche: 18+ stranger chat / dating (MENA, South Asia, Turkey, Southeast Asia)
- Big players and incumbents: Tinder, Bumble, Badoo, PURE, Muzz, Raya, on the same Lifestyle Top Grossing chart as Ceno
- Local Middle East: AlKhattaba, Soudfa
- Lookalike clone apps: Mitu (Video Chat, charted in 2025-08,71 storefronts, 455 ratings), Dico (2023-10,258 ratings), Nana (Live Video | Voice Chat, 2026-10-05, #8 on Pakistan Lifestyle Top Grossing), Renna (Live Stream & Connect)

Ceno and Berk share a lot: both are published by an Indonesian PT company, both host their privacy policy on a standalone "name.love" domain (ceno.love / berk.love), the 9 coin price tiers are identical, 10-22 shipped 1.1.0 versions on the same day, and the update notes both say "bug fix and improvement". Olen and Nook use the same update note too. It's reasonable to conclude that at least Ceno, Berk, Olen and Nook come from one team. The rest (Candra, Bello, Renna, etc.) are confirmed to sit in the same "also bought" recommendation cluster, but not confirmed to be the same team.
5. Why it took off
- Reskin to pass review, short lifespan per app but can be mass-produced. An obscure interest (stargazing, skiing, hiking, paddling) plus a "Community" wrapper gets past App Store review for social apps. The description, privacy policy and terms are thorough (coin usage is even written as "unlock the AI stargazing plan"), so review finds nothing wrong. Each app sits under a small Indonesian PT account, so one banned account doesn't take the rest down.
- What it really sells is 18+ stranger chat. Markets in the Middle East, South Asia and Turkey have high willingness to pay for stranger social apps and few local dating apps, which is why on the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart it ranks next to Tinder, Bumble and Muzz. US users' own words: "token is expensive", "get to meet new people".
- Mass ad spend plus fake reviews as a launch-volume signal. 10-30 and Berk both gained +118 / +139 in a single day. The five-star reviews are one or two words plus gibberish, and the titles repeat across packages. This is fake review seeding to build rating weight for new apps.
- Targeting low-bar small-country top charts. Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain and Pakistan's top 10 Lifestyle Top Grossing spots need very little paying volume, so being "charted" in 84 storefronts looks impressive.
- Off-store payments to raise margins (confirmed on the sister app). Berk has complaints from Turkish users whose bank-transfer top-ups never arrived, which suggests the template steers users to pay outside Apple, saving 15–30% in channel fees, but it also carries risks of account bans and fraud complaints.
6. Differentiation
The packaging differences (stargazing community, AI weekly stargazing plan, meteor shower countdown, infrared / X-ray views) are not why it worked: no reviewer mentions any of these features, it doesn't appear on any stargazing chart, and a US user even calls it an "AI generated app". The real "differentiation" is operational: different interest themes act as personas to cover different entry points in review and store search, behind which sit the same coin-based chat monetization and the same traffic. To users this isn't differentiation, just a distribution play.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: almost nobody knows about it. No press coverage, 0 posts on X, no TikTok content, revenue not public; only auto-generated pages from AppBrain, Appfigures, Similarweb and Sensor Tower (Sensor Tower puts it at #6 on Lebanon's Lifestyle chart).
- Copycats: it is itself a product of mass cloning. Same-template apps: Berk (skiing, 8-28), Olen (paddling, 9-30), Nook (hiking, 7-14), with Candra, Bello, Davo, Renna and others in the recommendation cluster.
8. What others can borrow
- The method of "obscure interest theme × community × coins" packaging, plus chasing rankings on small-country top charts to manufacture a "charted in many countries" signal, is worth studying for chart analysis. Be wary: in the library, the combination of "new app + Lifestyle Top Grossing in several countries + 18+ + coin in-app purchases + one-line update notes + seller is an Indonesian PT or Hong Kong LTD" very likely means a clone app of this kind, and should be discounted when recalling it.
- Using the "You Might Also Like" (customers also bought) page to look up other apps from the same team works well.
- Serious developers shouldn't copy this: the A/B face (hidden review features) and off-store payments both fall under App Store 3.2(f) / 3.1.1 ban triggers, and the sister app has already drawn fraud complaints.
9. Still unclear
- There is no direct evidence on whether Ceno itself has an A/B face toggle or off-store payments. The conclusions come from the sister app Berk's reviews and inference from the shared template. Not tested by installing the app.
- Whether the chat partners are real live hosts, AI or empty shells is uncertain. Berk's reviews say "no real riders, just stubs" and "AI generated", but there's no matching evidence for Ceno.
- Ad acquisition channels, creatives and spend weren't found: the Meta ad library only tracks a list of products, and the TikTok ad library only covers Europe. Actual revenue is also unknown.
- Whose company is behind it (going by industry practice, probably a China-based global social team running it through an Indonesian company account), unverified.
