Logged it the moment I paid with Apple Pay: how a Ukrainian got a budgeting app into the bank-dominated charts through Threads
What it is An iPhone budgeting app: pay with Apple Pay and the expense is logged automatically, snap a receipt and it recognizes each item, and you can import bank statements. No sign-up required.
Why it took off The developer himself kept posting Ukrainian-language Threads demos of "tap at checkout and it's logged," telling the story of "one person against the banks." Ukraine's finance charts are almost all banks, the bar to chart is low, and one wave of downloads was enough to get on them.
BHow you could follow it Go to markets like Romania, Hungary, Czechia, or Greece, where Apple Pay is common but local budgeting apps are scarce, and copy the playbook in the local language: an Apple Pay auto-logging app, a paywall built around local receipt scanning, and the founder posting demo videos on Threads or Instagram.

In August 2026, Ukrainian developer Ihor Roma launched Skarbo, a budgeting app he built alone. Its features exist elsewhere, but few have pushed the approach the way he did: the developer kept posting the same 16-second video on Ukrainian-language Threads. Three months later it ranked #3 in the Ukrainian App Store's free Finance chart, surrounded by banks. Below: what got it going, how much it earns, and whether you can copy it in another country.
A 16-second video
On Sep 7 2026, Ihor Roma posted on Threads, a post he later pinned:
I'm a Ukrainian developer and I built a budgeting app. Its main goal is to automate expense tracking as much as possible… The coolest part: every payment you make with Apple Pay is logged into the app automatically, you just pick a category.
The post came with a 16-second screen recording: tap an iPhone at the checkout, payment completes, and Skarbo immediately pops up the expense and asks which category it belongs to. Two more features went into the post: scanning a receipt recognizes every item, and a double tap on the back of the iPhone logs an expense on the spot.
The post got 504 likes, 305 replies, and 296 reposts (Threads, 11-06 views). His account still has only 815 followers, and his bio reads "building my own budgeting app."
By Nov 6 he was still posting, rephrasing it several ways: "I'm one person competing with banks on the App Store, no team 🇺🇦", "Remember this app 🙏", "Built a Ukrainian app you'll want to open right at the checkout." A review in the Polish store says outright how users found it: "I found this app through the author on Threads" (App Store Poland reviews, 10-09).
What it is
Skarbo: Budget Expense Tracker, iPhone only, free to download. It combines three ways to log expenses without typing:
- Auto-logs Apple Pay payments: uses the "Wallet Transaction" automation in iOS Shortcuts to pass the amount and merchant name to the app at payment time.
- Receipt scanning: AI reads the store name, date, total, and each item, auto-categorizes them, and handles discounts and receipts in different languages and currencies.
- Bank statement import: supports CSV and XLSX, auto-detects columns and currency. A later update added "recognize bank app screenshots."
No account needed either: statements are parsed on the phone, and multi-currency amounts are converted at the rate on the day of payment. That matters for Ukrainians who have moved abroad.
Pricing: the free version imports statements without limit and scans 10 receipts a month. Early on it was only 3, which drew complaints in Sep 24. Premium removes the scan cap and adds AI Q&A about your spending. Reviews include "1000 hryvnias a year is out of reach for me" and a one-star review saying "it charged my whole year's money at once" (10-25). From this, the main revenue is likely the annual plan, roughly 1000 UAH, about 24 USD (inferred).
Why now, and why this one
It solves a chore people do every night. One Ukrainian user 10-31 wrote: "I've tried several apps before, same idea, but every night I'd copy each transaction from my bank app into categories… this does it for you." Every major Ukrainian bank supports Apple Pay, and many people use several cards. A bank app only shows its own transactions, so seeing all your spending means copying it by hand.
The features aren't unique; the story is local. Apple Pay auto-logging, receipt scanning, and statement import all exist in other apps. For example, Control: Budget Tracker, launched in March 2026, has nearly identical features but only 7 ratings in the Ukrainian store to date. What Skarbo added was having the developer front the story himself, in Ukrainian: "one person against the banks." Comments include "🇺🇦✊🏻", "thanks to the developer", and one saying "the developer listens to suggestions, which earns big points with me."
The chart bar is low. Ukraine's free Finance chart is nearly filled by banks and state apps: monobank, Privat24, PUMB, NovaPay, Naftogaz… (App Store Ukraine Finance chart, 11-06). An independent app only needs one wave of downloads to crack the top 15, and making the chart brings some organic downloads. Its best day in the free category was #3,11-06 on 10-28, and it slid to #13. The Top Grossing chart has swung between #2 and #8, and its peak was #6 on 11-06.
The comments are a demand pool, and he ships weekly. Many of the 305 replies are feature requests: income tracking, multiple accounts, PDF statements, family sharing. From August to November it went from version 1.0 to 2.0.6 (11-04). Income tracking, account balances, subscription detection, and bank screenshot recognition all shipped.
How big is it really?
Not very big.
| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Global ratings | 145 total, of which Ukraine 111 (average 4.35) and Poland 27 (4.74) | App Store,11-06 |
| Rate of new ratings | About 10 new ratings per week globally, no acceleration | App Store daily ratings, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| Ukraine Finance Top Grossing | between #2–8, 11-06 at #6 | App Store charts |
| Poland Finance Top Grossing | Ranks 8–25, best #10-31 on 8 | App Store charts |
| Downloads | Developer claims over 50k; third-party estimator mwm.ai estimates 25k+ | Neither verified |
The Top Grossing bar in Ukraine's Finance chart is low: at 11-06, the app ranked #4 had only 124 ratings. Top Grossing #6 corresponds to roughly a few thousand dollars a month in revenue (inferred). Judging by the reviews, the Poland users are mainly Ukrainians living in Poland.
Revenue isn't public, no media has covered it, and X search turns up nothing. Its visibility is limited to a small circle on Ukrainian-language Threads.
Who it's competing with
The budgeting category in Ukraine is actually crowded, with a number of Ukrainian indie developers building similar things:
| Product | Scale (Ukraine store) | Difference from Skarbo |
|---|---|---|
| Monefy (Denmark, 2017) | 13,538 rating, #2 in Finance Top Grossing | Veteran manual quick-entry app, no Apple Pay auto-logging |
| Money Flow(2014) | 2,914 ratings, Top Grossing #5 | Veteran manual budgeting app, a regular on Ukrainian media's "Top-7" lists |
| Wallet (BudgetBakers, Czechia) | 2,479 ratings, Top Grossing #8 | Connects directly to banks, requires an account |
| Expense: Budget Tracker (Ukrainian solo developer, 2023) | 2,078 ratings, Top Grossing #10 | Also a Ukrainian solo developer, rating growth similar to Skarbo's |
| monobudget(2020) | 931 ratings, Top Grossing #20 | Only serves monobank users |
| MoneyFlux, Expensa, Lichy (new in 2026) | Scale unknown or very small | All from the same wave of small Ukrainian teams: MoneyFlux runs on SEO blogs, Expensa was featured on dev.ua |
| Control: Budget Tracker(2026-03) | 7 rating | Nearly identical features, no local content, and none of them took off |
| Privat24 and monobank's built-in analytics | Tens of millions of users | Free, but only shows your own bank's transactions |
The name is taken several times over: Skarb — AI Finance Tracker (2026-05), skarb-budget.com, and the web version skarbo.app, mostly built independently around the same time. There's a Polish app "Scarbo: Budżet domowy" released Oct 9 with 0 ratings that looks like it's riding the name (inferred).
Where it falls short
- Shortcuts are hard to set up. "Automations don't work, I installed one guide after another" (2 stars, 10-31); "Can you make a button that adds the automation with one tap" (4 stars, 10-05). This is where Apple Pay auto-logging loses the most users.
- "AI slop" complaints. At least 4 one-star reviews literally say "AI slop", "lots of bugs", or "feels like it was thrown together in two days".
- Annual subscription charged at once, and users are unhappy. Some users saw it recommended on Threads, installed it, and only then found out it needs a subscription to be useful (Polish storefront one-star review, 10-09).
- PDF statements can't be imported. Privat24 exports statements as PDF, and several reviews ask for support.
If it were you
Verdict: B. The opportunity is real, but not in Ukraine. The playbook can move to other small-language markets: use iOS transaction automation for "log it as you pay," have the founder appear on camera speaking their native language, and use receipt recognition for the paywall. The ceiling is a few thousand dollars a month, enough for one person, not enough for a team.
Good fit for: one or two people who can write iOS, and whose native language has widespread Apple Pay but few local expense-tracking apps. For example Romanian, Hungarian, Czech, Greek, Turkish, or Bulgarian (inferred; I haven't checked each country's charts). You also need to be willing to show your face, post consistently in your native language on Threads or Instagram, and reply to comments one by one.
Bad fit for: anyone aiming at English, Russian, or Ukrainian markets. The first two are already crowded, and Ukraine now has a cluster of similar apps. Also bad for anyone who won't show their face and only wants to rely on store search: Control is the counterexample, same features, 7 ratings. And for anyone hoping to build a big business on an expense app, since these apps have a low ceiling in small markets.
How to build it: native iPhone, no account sign-up. The first screen should walk users through installing the "wallet transaction" Shortcut with one tap, which is the part Skarbo gets wrong. Receipt recognition needs to support local receipt formats and languages. If local receipts carry tax QR codes, read the QR code directly, which is more accurate than OCR. Support local bank statement exports (including PDF) from day one. The free tier covers Apple Pay auto-logging and statement import, receipt scanning is capped by count, and going over the cap requires a subscription. On the paywall, state clearly that the annual plan is "charged once for the full year," and offer a monthly plan as well.
How to get users: copy his post format. Open with "I'm a developer from X country, and I built … alone," follow with a vertical screen recording of about 15 seconds that shows one thing: tap the phone on the card reader and the expense is logged. End by asking for feedback. Reply to every useful comment, ship a release each week, and post "the X you asked for is done" a week later. On the charts, the top expense-category apps are banks, so use "one person competing with the banks" as the hook. Install the Meta pixel on the landing page, and once a few posts are performing, run the same videos as ads on a small budget.
When it needs to happen: as early as possible. Skarbo's same-name and similar-name products already exist in Poland, and whoever gets there first is more likely to be remembered on Threads. Around the New Year people most want to "start tracking expenses," which is peak season for this kind of app (inferred), so aim to launch before the end of December with several rounds of posts already out.
What would mean you read it wrong: ① Apple itself adds cross-card spending categories and export inside Wallet, which would make automatic logging unremarkable. ② Skarbo drops out of the top 20 in Ukraine's Finance Top Grossing chart and doesn't recover after December, showing that the Threads wave couldn't sustain paid conversions. ③ You publish 5–6 demo posts in your own language and none get more than 100 likes, meaning the "founder plus local story" approach doesn't work in your market and you should stop forcing it.

Skarbo: Budget Expense Tracker (iOS 6795880230) research report
In one line: an iPhone expense app built solo by Ukrainian indie developer Ihor Roma, 2026-08-11 on the App Store. Its core pitch is "pay with Apple Pay and the expense logs itself": built on the iOS Shortcuts "wallet transaction" automation, plus line-item receipt scanning and bank statement import. Users come almost entirely from the developer repeatedly posting the same demo videos on Threads (in Ukrainian) and telling the "one person competing with the banks on the App Store" story. It squeezes into the middle of the free Finance chart alongside bank apps and peaks at #6 on Top Grossing. It's small (145 ratings globally), no media has written about it, and revenue is not public.
1. How to read the data card
- Launch and versions: first released 2026-08-11, updated to 2.0.6 by 11-04, roughly one release a week (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06). The interface is in 11 languages, and the description lists 8.
- Rating distribution (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06): Ukraine 111 ratings, average 4.35; Poland 27, 4.74; US 8; Germany 7. 112/145 are concentrated in Ukraine.
- Ukraine Finance chart positions (appstore.app_day, 10-28 to 11-06):
- Best Free chart positions in the category: 10-28 at #3,11-06, then #13. Ahead of it are almost all banks and national apps: КУБ (Naftogaz), PUMB, NovaPay, Privat24, monobank, Ощад… (v_chart, 2026-11-06)
- Top Grossing category positions: bouncing between #2 and #8, with its best at #11-06 (6).
- Overall Free chart: 10-28 at #46, after that between 85 and 205.
- Poland: Finance Top Grossing sits between #8 and #25 (best #10-31 on 8), but has only 27 ratings. From the reviews, the users are mainly Ukrainians living in Poland. One review reads "Found it through the author on Threads" (Apple RSS review, pl, 2026-10-09).
- Growth rate: globally it adds 1 to 4 ratings a day, about 10 over 7 days, with no acceleration. Ukraine added 7 over the last 7 days (appstore.app_profile).
- Self-reported figures: the developer, November, said on Threads "over 50k downloads" and "#1 in Finance, behind only ПриватБанк and Монобанк" (threads.com/@ihor_roma; post timestamps show 1–2 hours ago, captured 2026-11-06). The third-party estimator mwm.ai gives 25k+ downloads. Neither figure has been verified.
- Pricing: the free tier allows unlimited statement imports and 10 receipt scans per month (early on it was only 3; see the reviews on 2026-09-24). Premium gives unlimited scanning and AI Q&A. Reviews mention "I can't afford 1000 грн a year", and one one-star review says "charged for the whole year at once" (ua, 2026-10-25). So the main product is the annual subscription, around 1000 UAH, or about $24. This is inferred from the reviews.
2. Competitors
The expense-app space in Ukraine is crowded, with a large number of Ukrainian indie developers building the same thing. The expense apps in the top 40 of Ukraine's Finance Top Grossing chart (appstore, ua, 2026-11-06):
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | Difference from Skarbo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monefy (Reflective Technologies, Denmark) | iOS/Android | 2017 | ua 13,538 rating, Top Grossing #2 | Veteran, pure manual quick entry; no Apple Pay auto-logging, no receipt recognition |
| Money Flow / Budget Planner(Hermann Wagenleitner) | iOS | 2014 | ua 2,914 rating, Top Grossing #5 | Veteran manual budgeting app, a regular on Ukrainian media's "Top-7" lists |
| Wallet (BudgetBakers, Czechia) | iOS/Android/web | 2015 | ua 2,479, Top Grossing #8 | Connects directly to banks and requires sign-up; Skarbo needs no sign-up and never asks for bank login |
| Expense: Budget Tracker (Sviatoslav Belmeha, Ukrainian individual developer) | iOS | 2023 | ua 2,078, Top Grossing #10,7, day +10 | A similar product from a Ukrainian indie developer, with rating growth about the same as Skarbo's |
| FinEye (Vladyslav Kaida, Ukrainian individual developer) | iOS | 2024 | ua 356, Top Grossing #11 | Also a Ukrainian solo project |
| Spendee / Zenmoney / CoinKeeper / Moneon / Toshl | iOS/Android | 2013–2015 | ua 2k–7.6k ratings each, Top Grossing #12–#34 | The old guard, some of which connect to banks. None sell on automatic logging via Apple Pay. |
| monobudget(Oleksandr Yolkin) | iOS | 2020 | ua 931, Top Grossing #20 | Syncs through monobank's open API, serves only mono users. |
| Money Manager(Orange Dog) | iOS | 2020 | UA 18,321,7 days +58 | Manual tracking at a much larger scale. |
| Lichy(TWOBIRDSTALK) | iOS | 2026-09-28 | ua 13, Top Grossing #22 | Newer than Skarbo in the same category. |
| MoneyFlux(moneyflux.app) | iOS | 2026 | Unknown | Ukrainian team, pitches importing Privat/Mono statements and the Mono API, and still writing SEO blog posts. |
| Expensa (Ukrainian solo, covered by dev.ua 2026-05-06). | iOS | 2026-05 | Unknown | AI budgeting plus iCloud sync, covered by the press. Skarbo never was. |
| Control: Budget Tracker(Alex Palacean) | iOS | 2026-03 | ua 7 rating | Also has Apple Pay transaction import and bank-notification import, nearly the same features, but without local content, so it never took off. |
| Banks ship their own analytics (Privat24 "Аналітика", monobank statistics). | Big-company features | Already around | Tens of millions of users | Free, but only shows accounts from the one bank. Skarbo merges multiple cards, cash and several banks' accounts. |
Bottom line: Skarbo has no feature that is exclusive to it. Apple Pay auto-logging, receipt OCR and statement import all show up in Control, MoneyFlux and Skarb. What's different is that it combines all three and tells the story in Ukrainian as "pull out your iPhone and tap at the register, and it's logged", and the developer personally pushes it over and over.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- The developer posts on Threads in Ukrainian himself (confirmed, main channel)
- @ihor_roma has 815 followers, and his bio says "building my own budgeting app". The pinned post went up on 2026-09-07 and reads "I'm a Ukrainian developer... every payment made with Apple Pay gets logged automatically in the app", with a demo video. It has 504 likes, 305 replies and 296 shares. A follow-up post linked the App Store page (50 likes).
- On Nov 6 he posted several more demo videos the same day: "I'm competing with banks on the App Store solo, no team 🇺🇦", "Remember this app 🙏", "Built a Ukrainian app you'll want to open right at the checkout".
- Search results include several more posts with similar openers: "There are hundreds of these apps on the App Store, I know, but a few details...", "Hi! I'm a Ukrainian developer, doing this alone...".
- The formula is consistent: the developer appears on camera or shows a screen recording of Apple Pay auto-logging + the "Ukrainian solo developer" identity + asks for feedback. 305 replies suggest the comment section doubles as his support desk and feature-request pool. Many commenters ask for income tracking, multiple accounts, PDF statement import and family sharing, and the developer really does ship updates weekly in response.
- A review from the Polish store, verbatim: "Found this app through the author's Threads".
- Meta paid ads (likely, but not found in the ad library): the landing page skarboapp.com says "this site uses Meta Pixel to track visits from ads", and the App Store links carry the source parameter
pt=129218285&ct=site. Our metaads library doesn't index this advertiser, so we can't confirm how much was spent. - Instagram @skarbo_official / @skarbo_app and YouTube @Skarboapp (small, confirmed to exist): they post English reels in the form "Favorite iPhone Apps - Part 1" and "3 settings you should enable on your iPhone", iPhone-tips lists with Skarbo slotted in. The official Threads account has only 38 followers.
- TikTok (essentially ineffective): @skarboapp has 2 followers. In August they posted 2 videos, the top one with 2,836 views (TikHub, 2026-11-06).
- Store search / ASO (modest effect): the title is "Budget Expense Tracker", and the Russian-market subtitle is "учет расходов, бюджет", so it's localized. But with few ratings, search alone can't hold #3 on the free chart.
- Press / X / Reddit: none found. x-radar returned 0 posts mentioning "Skarbo" over the last 90 days. dev.ua and ain.ua have never written about it.
4. Why it took off
- The timing is the iOS Shortcuts "Transaction" automation: starting with iOS 17, Shortcuts can trigger on Apple Pay / Wallet payments and pass the amount and merchant to an app. Ukrainians use Apple Pay a lot (all major banks support it), and the biggest pain point in budgeting is "every night copying transactions one by one from the bank app". One review: "Tried several apps, same idea, every night manually copying bank transactions into categories... this does it for you." That's the key to getting people to pay.
- The story travels well, and it's a local story: "Ukrainian solo developer takes on the banks on the charts" draws engagement and support on Ukrainian-language Threads easily (comments include "🇺🇦✊🏻" and "thanks to the developer"). 305 replies show the content itself is driving discussion.
- Category effect on the charts: the Ukrainian finance free chart is almost fully taken by banks, so an independent budgeting app only needs a wave of downloads from Threads to crack the top 15. That in turn brings some organic exposure in the store. The Ukrainian finance grossing chart has a low bar: #4 SBC has only 124 ratings, so the revenue behind #6 may be only a few thousand dollars a month. This is an inference.
- Fast iteration, shipped in response to feedback: from August to November it went from 1.x to 2.0.6. Features users asked for, like "income tracking", "account balances", "subscription detection" and "bank app screenshot recognition", were added one after another (see release notes and the comment timeline).
- Monetization: the free tier includes Apple Pay auto-logging and statement import. Receipt scanning is capped at 10 per month, and going beyond that requires payment. AI receipt recognition has real marginal costs, so using it as the paywall makes sense.
5. Differentiation, and why it broke out
- Differentiation: ① Apple Pay auto-logging is the headline feature. Right after you pay, it pops up so you can pick a category. ② Receipts are recognized item by item, with Ukrainian language and multi-currency support. ③ No account sign-up. Statements are parsed locally on the phone. ④ Multi-currency amounts are converted at the historical rate for the day of payment, which suits Ukrainians who have moved abroad.
- None of these is unique on its own: Control has Apple Pay import, MoneyFlux and Skarb have statement import and receipt recognition, and Wallet connects directly to banks. What actually made it break out is distribution, not features. It turns the "paid, and it's logged" moment into a 15-second vertical video, posts it repeatedly on Ukrainian Threads, and uses the "one person against the banks" narrative to drive engagement. The feature combination is what makes users stay and pay.
- It has weaknesses too: over 4 one-star reviews call it "AI slop" and complain about bugs. Shortcut setup is hard, and some report "automation doesn't work". The one-time annual charge has also upset some people. New ratings haven't accelerated, which suggests Threads traffic comes in waves.
6. Awareness and copycats
- Awareness: spread only within small circles. On Ukrainian Threads it gets a few hundred to around a thousand interactions. No press coverage, no X discussion, and revenue isn't public (no TrustMRR listing, and the developer has only shared download counts and ranks).
- Copycats / name collisions: several apps share the same or a similar name, but most launched around the same time or earlier, so they count as the same wave rather than copies of it:
- Skarb — AI Finance Tracker: Kyryl Palamar, launched 2026-05, 3 ratings
- Skarb (skarb-budget.com): another Ukrainian solo developer, completely free
- skarbo.app: web-based household budgeting, same name
- Scarbo: Budżet domowy: Borys Kusmirek, launched 2026-10-09, in Polish, 0 ratings. The name and timing look like they're riding on Skarbo's reputation in Poland, but this can't be confirmed.
- Other new entrants in the Ukrainian finance grossing chart from 9 to October include Lichy (2026-09-28)
7. What others can learn
- Small-language market + platform-native automation + a local social narrative with the developer on camera. In markets like Ukraine and Poland, the bar for finance grossing charts is low, and local big players (banks) don't offer cross-bank consolidated budgeting. Using iOS Shortcuts transaction triggers for "zero manual entry", the same playbook can be copied in markets where Apple Pay is widespread but local-language budgeting apps are scarce: Romania, Hungary, Czechia, Greece, Turkey and others. Use local-language Threads/Instagram demo videos plus a receipt-OCR paywall.
- The structure is worth copying: use the free Apple Pay auto-logging to acquire users, and use the AI receipt-scan quota as the paywall.
- Pitfalls: the Shortcuts setup is a drop-off point, so it should be a one-tap install. The one-time annual charge needs to be spelled out clearly on the paywall, or it will earn one-star reviews.
8. Still unclear
- Real download numbers: the developer claims 50k, mwm.ai estimates 25k+, neither verified. Revenue can only be inferred from grossing ranks, and it's likely in the range of a few thousand dollars a month.
- Scale of Meta ad spend: the landing page has a Pixel, but nothing turned up in the ad library.
- I couldn't find the "single post with 1.5K likes" cited in the recall reasoning. The pinned post I found has 504 likes and 296 shares, so another post may have done better. The full view requires logging into Threads.
- I can't match which post drove the 10-28 free-chart #3 wave.
