> The features are ordinary. It took off because Russian-language Instagram creators kept promoting it. The funnel adds a quiz opening, an unskippable paywall, a discount wheel, and an annual charge that starts automatically after a 3-day trial. Russian payments go through local acquiring, so there's no Apple cut, and the savings go toward paying creators.

# A jewelry store charge: how Revius, a Russian-language AI budgeting app, broke into the top five in two months, then slid down under bad reviews

**What it is** A Russian-language AI voice budgeting app: say "coffee 250 rubles" to the phone and it logs the entry, auto-categorizes it, and builds stats. It can't be used without paying.

**Why it blew up** The feature set is ordinary. What made it take off was Russian-language bloggers on Instagram pushing it nonstop, plus a funnel of a survey intro, a paywall you can't skip, a prize-wheel discount, and an auto-renewing annual charge after a 3-day trial. Russian users paid through a local processor that skips Apple's cut, and the savings went straight into paying bloggers.

**B** **How you could follow it** Take the playbook of local-language blogger promotion + survey paywall + annual billing to another language where Apple payments are awkward, or in Russia build a version that connects to bank statements, has a clear cancel path, and runs reliable servers, so you catch the users it loses.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and there's no exclusive resource you can't copy, and few people know about it yet. But the product has no moat, the local processor risks Apple removing the app, and its own retention and reviews collapsed within a month. The playbook ran fast and died fast. A Russian-language app that logs your spending when you speak a sentence. Launched in September, and by late October it hit #4 on Russia's free Finance chart. The feature set is ordinary, and people made the same thing two years ago with no traction. It took off because of Instagram bloggers, a paywall you can't get past, and a payment route that bypasses Apple. In early November its servers went down, and the reviews turned into a consumer-complaint thread. Below: what it actually did right, what the traps are, and what you can take from it.

### One bank statement line

On Nov 2, a Russian user gave Revius 1 stars on the App Store. They had paid for the annual plan, the app wouldn't open, they tried to cancel the subscription and kept getting errors. So they went to the Sber (Russian savings bank) app to block the charge, and found:

> "The charge is disguised as SOKOLOV JEWELRY, as if a jewelry store called Sokolov charged me!"

The name half-matches. Revius's website terms say that users in Russia and the CIS who pay by card inside the app go through ЮKassa (a Russian local payment processor), and the payee is a sole proprietor called Соколов Д.С. Соколов is also the name of a well-known Russian jewelry brand. Why the merchant name includes JEWELRY, whether that's the sole proprietor's registered business category or something else, can't be verified from outside (unverified).

This review shows Revius's whole playbook: the money doesn't go through Apple, users were lured in by bloggers on Instagram, and the first thing you hit is a paywall you can't get past. The features matter least.

### What it is

Revius - Учет Расходов ("Expense Tracker"), developed by SUNRISE, LLC from Yerevan, Armenia. The account has only this one app. Launched on iOS in Sep 4, with an Android version on Google Play.

Usage is simple: say "кофе 250 рублей" (coffee 250 rubles) to your phone, and it picks out the amount, category and place, logs the entry, then gives you daily, weekly and monthly stats. The Oct 23 build of 1.1.2 adds a few more features: say "Привет, Siri, Ревиус расход" to Siri to log a spend, a Control Center button, snap a receipt to log it, and voice-manage your savings jars and debts ("в копилку Отпуск 5000", i.e. put 5000 into the "Vacation" savings jar).

Early praise was mostly about voice input: "I was too lazy to type each entry, now I just talk, it's great" (9-06), "logging while walking, voice plus spending is really convenient" (10-16).

### How big it is, and where it's heading

| Metric | Metric | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| iOS rating count (all stores) | 177 → 313 | 10-28 → 11-06 |
| of which Russia | 276 reviews, +113 in the last 7 days | 11-06 |
| Average | 2.12 | App Store,11-06 |
| Russia Finance free chart | #4 → #18 | 10-28 → 11-06 |
| Google Play installs | About 37k (store shows "10k+") | 11-06 |

The rating count looks like it's exploding: 11-05 one day, +25,11-06 another day, +69. But don't read that as downloads accelerating. From Nov 2 to 4, three days brought 90 reviews, mostly 1 stars, nearly all saying the same thing: paid but won't open, endless spinning, won't connect even with a VPN, can't cancel the subscription, and the support email bounces. The rating growth in those days was users venting in the negative reviews. At the same time it slid on the free chart from #4 to #18.

There's another easy misread. The Russia Finance Top Grossing top 40 doesn't include it. The ones charting there are small stores like Uzbekistan (11-06 at #7), Belarus (10-30 at one point #2), Finland, Jordan and Poland. The reason: Russian users pay through ЮKassa, which Apple can't see, so Russia's Top Grossing chart can't show its revenue. In small stores, payments go through Apple in-app purchase, and with fewer paying users the bar to climb the chart is lower.

### Where users came from: bloggers on Instagram Reels

Over nine reviews said how they found it:

- "Saw its ad in Reels" (11-03)

- "An ad I saw on Insta" (10-20)

- "Several bloggers talked about this app" (11-02)

- "Its ads are everywhere online" (10-30)

- "Don't trust the blogger ads" (10-31)

- "Pushed this hard... and it won't even open" (11-03)

Meta stopped selling ads in Russia in 2022, and Instagram requires a VPN to use in Russia. So the "ads in Reels" people mention are most likely blogger placements, not traffic bought through Meta's ad manager (inferred). A finance-themed Instagram account @budget.budy posted a Reel titled "Приложение Revius"; whether it's the account's own content or a paid placement can't be confirmed. No promotion turned up on TikTok or X, and no media outlet has covered it.

The bloggers' framing was "figure out where your money goes". That topic breeds anxiety by nature, so people who watch it feel they need the thing.

### How the money gets collected: a funnel that won't let you leave

Reviews describe the new-user flow in detail:

1. **Take a quiz first** . The app builds a "spending analysis" from your answers. One user said it included a line about "unconscious spending", followed immediately by a subscribe prompt (10-01, headline: "Save money, but spend it on us").

2. **Email required** . Many people got stuck when the verification code never arrived.

3. **Paywall you can't skip** . "I tap the X, a wheel pops up, and what's on it? Subscription! I decline, and what do I see? Subscription!" (10-22)

4. **Discount via a prize wheel** . Someone "won" 99₽/month (10-10).

5. **3-day trial, with 1₽ charged to link the card up front** , then the annual plan renews automatically.

The store lists monthly at 390₽ and annual at 1,690₽, with the annual discounted to 1,190₽. But the largest amount people reported being charged was 2,490₽. One user: "I meant to try one month for 250₽, and they charged me 2,490" (10-08). Another said they were charged 9,395₽ (10-01, only one report, unverified). Many said they got no reminder as the trial ended, and one admitted outright: "I didn't notice the trial was only 3 days, I guess they counted on that" (11-04).

The developer's standard reply: "Revius is a paid app, but all features are free for the first 3 days, so you can try it at your own pace and see whether it suits you."

Overseas this funnel has a name, web2app: a quiz builds anxiety, a paywall follows, then a discount, then a short trial leading into annual billing. Fitness, meditation and language-learning apps have run it for years. Revius moved it into Russian-language expense tracking.

### Why bypass Apple at all

The ЮKassa route does two things at once. First, Russian users find Apple in-app payments hard to use, and without local billing many simply can't pay. Second, it avoids the platform's 15-30% commission, and since the annual fee is charged upfront, the money comes in fast, which could fund paying the next wave of bloggers (inferred).

The costs are just as clear. The subscription doesn't show up under iOS Settings > Subscriptions, so users can't find where to cancel: "It's not even in the app's subscription list, I can't cancel" (9-20). In the end people have to block the charge through their bank app, which is how the "jewelry store" review came about. Russian legal Q&A site pravoved.ru already has people asking how to get money back from Revius. And selling digital subscriptions through an external payment processor inside an app violates Apple's App Review Guidelines 3.1.1; whether that gets the app removed can't be told from outside.

### Who it's competing with

The Russian-language expense tracking category is old and crowded:

| Competitors | Scale (Russia App Store, 11-06) | How it differs from Revius |
|---|---|---|
| Финансы - расходы и доходы(Orange Dog) | 76k ratings, +7 in 195 days | Free with ads, rides the search term "финансы" for organic traffic, tens of times Revius's volume |
| Дзен-мани(Zenmoney) | 9,852 reviews, average 4.45, #7 on Finance Top Grossing | Auto-logs by syncing bank statements, grows on word of mouth |
| CoinKeeper | 6,759 reviews, #10 on the free chart | Gamified expense tracking, with a free tier |
| Built-in spending analysis in bank apps (T-Bank, Sber) | Tens of millions of users | Free, auto-categorizes from card transactions |
| AI expense trackers like Бюджет AI, Qalta AI, Kasso, Lode | 1-37 reviews each | Same concept as Revius, none of them gained traction |
| TalkieMoney(Голосовой Учет) | 1 reviews in Russia | 2024 built Russian-language voice expense tracking, and almost nobody used it |

The last two lines say it best: "AI voice expense tracking" doesn't bring in users by itself. Over a dozen apps are doing the same thing, and only Revius, which paid for distribution, shot up the charts. A negative review says its weak spot out loud: "Other apps can connect to bank feeds; here it's all manual entry" (11-04).

### Where it's headed

October It shipped updates fast: 9-12 to 10-23 saw 4 versions. Early November, the trouble was servers buckling under the ad-driven traffic, or Russian network blocking, or the team shrinking. From outside, it's hard to tell. Reviews keep saying "can't open it even with a VPN," while revius.ru loads normally from abroad (11-06). Two things are clear: the average rating has fallen from 2.4 in September to about 1.5 in early November, and annual subscribers will most likely renew poorly next year (inference).

### If it were you

**Verdict: B, worth a test, but don't copy its pitfalls.** This run proved a combination of distribution plus payments: local-language creators hype it, a survey paywall, annual plans charged upfront, and payments outside Apple's billing. That mix pushed an ordinary expense app into the top five of its chart within two months. It also proved the other half: when the backend and support can't keep up and the cancel button is hidden, rankings and reputation collapse within a month.

**Who it fits:** small teams with someone who has run creator campaigns and can work out what a paying user costs to acquire. A native Russian speaker, or someone working in another language where Apple's payments are awkward and local creators are cheap (inference: Turkish, Kazakh, Uzbek, Vietnamese are worth a look).

**Who it doesn't fit:** anyone who can only write code and hopes the "AI voice" feature will grow the app by itself. TalkieMoney and the rest of the AI expense crowd show where that ends. English-market plays don't suit this either: AI expense apps are already crowded there and paid acquisition is expensive. Skip it too if you don't want to deal with payment compliance or fear Apple pulling the app.

**How to build it:** keep voice and receipt-photo entry as the core, then fix three things Revius got wrong. One: connect bank feeds, or import SMS or statements, since "all manual entry" is the most common complaint. Two: make cancellation obvious, and send a reminder the day before a trial converts. Three: staff servers and support for the traffic you plan to buy. The survey opener and paywall can stay, but the price shown must match the price charged, with no hidden 2,490₽ after a spin wheel. Use local payment processing for Russian-speaking markets, and use Apple and Google in-app purchase everywhere else.

**How to acquire users:** finance creators on Instagram Reels and Telegram, with angles like "where did my money go" and "how I saved X in a year." Revius's angry users are already asking for alternatives in the review section, which is a ready-made audience. Test with a small budget across 10 to 20 mid-sized creators first, and only spend more if the cost per paying user comes in under half the annual fee (inference).

**Deadline:** launch by mid-December. January is budgeting and New Year planning season, when demand for expense apps peaks (inference). If you miss it, the next windows are September's back-to-school and year-end bonus periods.

**Wrong read:** ① Revius fixed its service in November, and its ratings and ranking came back to the top 10 of the free chart, so its audience is still there and you'd be going head-to-head with it for the same bloggers; ② Apple pulled a batch of Russian-language apps 3.1.1 because they took payments locally inside the app, which closed that payment channel; ③ two or three more bookkeeping apps with the same playbook and the same blogger tactics showed up in the Russian market and all hit the free chart, so this path is crowded and you'd need to switch languages; ④ Т-Банк or Сбер launched voice bookkeeping inside their own apps, which removed the last reason for a standalone app to exist.

Where users come from

- **Confirmed** **Instagram Reels creator promotion** : 9+ comments say they downloaded after seeing a Reels / Instagram ad or a creator recommendation (10-16, 10-20, 10-30, 10-31, 11-02, 11-03); @budget.budy posted a Reel "Приложение Revius"

- **Confirmed** **Survey opener, paywall, spin-wheel discount, 3-day trial converting to annual** : reviews describe the opening test, a paywall that can't be skipped, a spin wheel that appears when you tap the X, a 1₽ card-binding charge, and automatic charges of 1,190~2,490₽ after the trial. In-app purchase tiers: monthly 390₽, annual 1,690₽, annual discount 1,190₽

- **Confirmed** **In-app ЮKassa payments (bypassing Apple)** : revius.ru/terms: users in Russia and the CIS pay in-app by binding a card through ЮKassa; the payee is ИП Соколов Д.С. This is absent from the Russian Top Grossing chart, while small storefronts that use Apple in-app purchase do chart

- Inference **Store search (name includes "Учет Расходов")** : after climbing into the top 5 of the Russian Finance Top Free chart, organic search traffic probably followed (inference)

- Inference **Meta ad-account buying** : not found in our metaads library; Meta doesn't run ads in Russia, and the "ads" in Reels look more like creator integrations

### One line

### 1. Data: how big it is now

- **iOS rating count** (appstore library, all storefronts combined): 10-28 went from 177,11-06 to 313. Russia has 276 ratings, +113 in the last 7 days (second-fastest growth in Russian Finance, behind Orange Dog's "Финансы - расходы и доходы", +195/7 days, which has 76k ratings). Apple lookup 11-06: average 2.12, 310 ratings total.

- **Russia Finance Top Free chart** (appstore library, app_day): 10-28 sat at #4,10-29-11-03 for 5-7 days, then 11-04 slid to #8,11-05, #11,11-06, #18, and kept falling.

- **Top Grossing** : it doesn't appear in the Russia Finance Top Grossing top 40 (appstore library, v_chart, 11-06). The only storefronts where it charts are small ones: Uzbekistan (Finance Top Grossing #2-16, bouncing, 11-06 at #7), Belarus (10-30 at #2,11-06, #22), Finland #17, Jordan #30, and Poland #33. The reason: Russian users pay through in-app ЮKassa card binding, which Apple can't see, so Russia's Top Grossing chart doesn't reflect its revenue. Small storefronts use Apple in-app purchase, which has a low bar, so a small number of payers is enough to chart.

- **Google Play** : io.revius.app has 36,830 installs (googleplay library, app_profile), and the store shows "10 тыс.+". Latest update: 10-22.

- **Reviews** (App Store library, Russian store, 178 reviews): 1-star 118, 2-star 31, 3-star 11, 4-star 6, 5-star 12. By time: September averages 2.38, first half of October 1.77, second half of October 1.71, November 1-4 1.46 (64 of 93 at 1 stars). 11-02-11-04 alone brought 90 reviews, mostly "can't open after paying / lagging / can't cancel subscription / support email bounces / can't connect even with VPN off." **So the +25 and +69 on 11-05 and 11-06 are mainly a wave of bad reviews from an outage, not downloads accelerating.**

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Revius |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Дзен-мани(Zenmoney) | iOS/Android | 2014 | Russia 9,852 ratings, average 4.45; #7 in Russia Finance Top Grossing | Auto-syncs bank feeds, long-established, users find it through word of mouth and search; Revius is manual or voice only (reviews say outright "other apps connect to banks") |
| CoinKeeper | iOS/Android | 2018 (old version 2014) | Russia 6,759 ratings, +32 in the last 7 days, #10 Top Free | Expense tracking through dragging coins, gamified, with a free tier; Revius has no free tier |
| Финансы - расходы и доходы(Orange Dog) | iOS | 2020 | Russia 76,314 ratings, +195 in the last 7 days, #11 Top Free | Tens of times Revius's volume, free with ads and in-app purchases; rides the store search term "финансы" for organic traffic |
| Money Flow / Moneon / Monefy / Деньги ОК | iOS | 2013–2017 | Several thousand ratings each in Russia, consistently in the top 40 Finance Top Grossing | Traditional manual expense tracking on subscription or one-time purchase, no AI voice |
| Учет расходов: Бюджет AI(Gostiuzhev) | iOS | 2026-01 | Russia 37 ratings, #35 Top Grossing | Also leads with AI but has no paid acquisition, low volume |
| Qalta AI, Kasso, Lode, Kapitallo and other AI expense apps | iOS | 2025-12~2026-07 | 1-34 reviews each | Same concept, none have gained traction, showing the "AI voice" concept alone doesn't attract users |
| Голосовой Учет / TalkieMoney(Appar) | iOS | 2024-03 | Russia 1 ratings, US 4 ratings | 2024 built voice AI expense tracking with Russian localization, and almost nobody used it. It's a counterexample: a feature isn't growth |
| Spending analytics built into bank apps (Т-Банк, Сбер, etc.) | Big-company features | Already around | Covers tens of millions of users | Free, auto-categorizes from card transactions; Revius bets on people who want a simple expense tracker and will pay for AI |

Bottom line: the Russian expense-tracking lane is crowded, and veterans have been there for a decade. A string of new AI expense apps has launched, and only Revius broke into the top 10 Finance Top Free chart. Functionally it's no different from other AI expense apps. The difference is that **it paid for distribution and built a full monetization funnel around it** .

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Instagram Reels creator promotion (confirmed, main channel)** : reviews include "Увидела в рилсах рекламу" (11-03), "Увидел рекламу в инсте" (10-20), "увидела это приложение в инстаграме" (10-16), "У нескольких блогеров слышала об этом приложении" (11-02), "не ведитесь на рекламу блоггеров" (10-31), "Так пиарят его" (11-03), "встречала на просторах интернета очень часто рекламу" (10-30). At least 9 reviews mention downloading after seeing an ad or a creator. Separately, @budget.budy on Instagram posted a Reel, "Приложение Revius" (instagram.com/reel/DekFWgJtwDH). It looks like a finance-themed account, which could be owned or paid, but that's unverified. Meta stopped running ads in Russia in 2022 (Instagram needs a VPN there), so the "ads" in Reels are most likely creator integrations rather than Meta ad-account buying (inference). Our metaads library doesn't list Revius as an advertiser. That library only tracks advertisers surfaced by keyword search, so a miss doesn't mean they didn't spend.

2. **Conversion funnel (confirmed)** : starts with a test quiz ("Финансовый урок сразу на старте", "Проходишь тест… сразу предложение о платной подписке"). Signup requires an email, and the paywall can't be skipped. Tapping X pops a spin wheel that "gives" a discount; one user spun down to 99₽/month. The 3-day trial requires a card linked up front for 1₽, and the annual fee charges automatically when the trial ends. List prices are 390₽ monthly, 1,690₽ yearly, and 1,190₽ yearly at the discount. Reviews show many people charged 2,490₽, and some say they "didn't notice the trial was only 3 days."

3. **Bypassing Apple's cut (confirmed)** : revius.ru's terms state that users in Russia and the CIS pay in-app by bank card through ЮKassa (ООО НКО «ЮМани»), with the payee being Russian sole proprietor (ИП) Соколов Д.С. Other regions go through App Store / Google Play. This solves two problems: Russian users can't pay via Apple in-app purchase, and it avoids the 15~30% platform fee, leaving more money for blogger promotion. The cost is that the subscription doesn't show under iOS Settings → Subscriptions, so users can't find a cancel option ("в подписках приложения нет и не отменить подписку", 9-20). Refund disputes are common, and people have already asked the legal Q&A site pravoved.ru how to get money back from Revius.

4. **Store search (inferred, supporting)** : the app name includes "Учет Расходов", a high-volume search term. Once it pushed into the top 5 of the free chart, organic traffic followed.

5. **Channels with no evidence found** : TikTok (TikHub searches for "revius" returned only unrelated results), X (0 results on x-radar), media coverage, HN and Reddit. TrustMRR doesn't list it, and the founders have not publicly disclosed revenue.

### 4. Why it took off

- Why it's getting users now: its blogger promotion on Instagram Reels is dense, and it targets the emotional hook of "save money / figure out where your money goes," so new users keep arriving. It launched in September and by late October reached #4 in the Russian finance free chart.

- Why people pay: the funnel is aggressive. The quiz creates anxiety, the paywall is hard to skip, a spin wheel offers a discount, and after 3 days of trial the annual fee is charged automatically. Early on there were also genuinely positive reviews, like "раньше лень было вбивать а через голос" (9-06) and "Добавлять покупки голосом оказалось удобно" (10-16). Voice logging solves a real pain point: laziness about recording expenses.

- Why the money comes back: in Russia it collects through ЮKassa and avoids Apple's cut, and annual plans charge 1,190~2,490₽ at once. Cash comes in fast early on, enough to fund blogger promotion.

- Retention: poor. October brought rapid iteration (9-12, 1.0.1,10-09, 1.1.0,10-14, 1.1.1,10-23, 1.1.2 releases adding income tracking, a savings jar, debt, Siri, and receipt scanning). But in early November the backend failed, paying users couldn't open the app, and the support email either didn't exist or bounced. Its rank slid. Renewal and year-two retention are probably bad (inferred).

### 5. Differentiation

On features, it's just "AI voice bookkeeping with one-sentence entry and auto-categorization," which is no different from a dozen other AI bookkeeping apps at the time. TalkieMoney was doing Russian voice bookkeeping back in 2024, and it didn't take off either, so this feature isn't what drove the breakout. The real difference is the playbook: **the Russian market + creator promotion + a web2app-style quiz paywall + domestic payment collection that sidesteps Apple** . That's a growth-and-monetization combo, not a product moat.

### 6. How visible it is

It's being talked about in small circles. There's promotion on Russian-language Instagram, but no media articles, nothing on X, and revenue has not been disclosed. The current discussion is mostly from users seeking redress (App Store complaints, questions on pravoved.ru). In the Russian market, several similar apps are copying or already using the same approach (Бюджет AI, Qalta AI, Kasso and other AI expense trackers haven't gained traction yet). We found no product clearly copying it.

### 7. What to borrow

- In markets where payment is constrained and platforms are restrictive (Russia, some CIS countries), you can add local payment processing inside the app (ЮKassa) and then use blogger promotion to build scale. The saved commission goes toward buying creators, and annual plans charge upfront for fast cash flow.

- The growth chain can be reused for other utility apps: "quiz opener that builds anxiety, paywall, spin-wheel discount, short trial into annual plan," paired with Reels product placement.

- The cautionary lesson: once backend and payment stability can't keep up with ad volume, a wave of bad reviews quickly drags down ratings and rankings. Without a clear cancellation path, refund disputes and complaints follow, and there's a risk of removal during Apple review.

### 8. Still unclear

- We don't have Instagram data on which accounts the bloggers were or how much was spent (Meta's ad library shows no commercial ads targeting Russia).

- Whether the early-November outage was a server problem, Russian network blocking (reviews repeatedly mention that it wouldn't open even with a VPN), or a deliberate team scale-back is unknown. The website sunrise-group.tech timed out on our end.

- Actual paying subscriber count and revenue are unknown (Apple can't see ЮKassa revenue).

- Search snippets for sunrise-group.tech describe it as "an AI consumer app for health and personal finance," so it may have other products listed under different accounts. Not verified.

- Selling digital content with external payment processing inside an app violates Apple's App Review Guidelines 3.1.1. Whether it will be removed in the future is unknown.
