# A UK learner searched "Testi" and paid £4.99 for an AI-written driving theory guide

**What it is** A driving-learning app whose name is nearly identical to the UK's top theory-test app "Testi". Inside is only an AI-written guide, and it makes money off a £4.99/week subscription.

**Why it took off** After the DVSA rule change, the genuine Testi was pulled from the UK iOS store. Driving instructors, classmates and Gemini kept telling people to download "Testi", so people searching the name landed here. The splash screen pretends to show earlier test slots, tricking people into paying.

**C** **How you could ride it** Don't borrow the name. Study the signal behind it: after regulators pushed the leading app off the stores, brand searches and real demand stayed, and a compliant product that does real things (like a change-your-own-slot tool or cancellation alerts) plus category keywords can catch that traffic.

C grade: it took off entirely by impersonating another brand and misleading people into paying. Copying it means copying the same impersonation, and it can be pulled by Apple or reported by the original brand at any time. A compliant version already exists in SlotSwap, and it's growing faster. What's worth learning is the signal that "regulation cleared a spot," not this product itself. Few people know about it yet

After Britain's most popular test-slot app, "Testi," disappeared from the UK App Store, a same-name app differing only by "UK" caught everyone searching for it. Three months after launch it ranked #29 on the UK Education Top Free chart and #49 on Top Grossing, with almost all reviews one-star "scam." It rose by piggybacking on the name, so don't follow that path. But the gap it exposed is real: after regulators pushed the leading app off the stores, brand-name searches remained and nobody was serving them.

### "Not the real Testi"

In 2026 Sep 22, a UK learner left a one-star App Store review: "My driving instructor said some of his students got test slots through Testi. This isn't that service." In Oct 12 someone else wrote: "Gemini recommended this app to me, I thought it was legit."

What they downloaded was "Testi Driving Cancellations," by developer James Stephens, who has only this one app, listed 2026-08-10. What they were looking for was "Testi Driving Cancellations UK," made by Testi Apps Limited, a long-established name in UK learner circles that claims 4.5M downloads. The two names differ only by the final "UK."

On 11-06, the official Testi App Store page in the UK storefront showed 404.

### Why the real Testi disappeared

Booking a UK driving test has long been hard, and test slots have reportedly sold for £500 on the black market (a UK National Audit Office report, as relayed by The Independent). Apps like Testi watch the DVSA system for you, alert you when someone cancels, and let you move to an earlier date with one tap.

From 2026-05-12, DVSA rules say only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel a test, and no unofficial service may scrape the booking system (gov.uk, "Changes to driving test booking rules in 2026"). The Independent reported in Jun 12 that, under DVSA pressure, 17 apps reselling test slots were removed from the mainstream app stores.

The real Testi's response: it remains on App Stores in other countries but was renamed "Testi - Driving Test UK," with the description "We removed tests availability from the app." Its website directs iPhone users to the web version at testi.app, "no install needed." The Android version is still up, with about 980k installs on Google Play. UK iPhone users can no longer find it in the App Store. A thread on r/LearnerDriverUK is titled "Testi is gone from appstore," and in Facebook groups for new drivers people keep asking "does Testi still work?"

The demand hasn't changed, and neither has the brand's recognition. Driving instructors, classmates, learner videos on TikTok, and Gemini still say "go download Testi," but the only app called Testi left on the UK App Store is this one.

### How users got in: almost all searched the name

| Date | UK Education Top Free | UK Education Top Grossing | Total ratings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 28 | 51 | 117 |
| 11-01 | 47 | 76 | 128 |
| 11-03 | 24 | 62 | 129 |
| 11-06 | 29 | 49 | 137 |

(App Store UK storefront, daily charts)

AppInsider first logged it in Sep 25, when it ranked #51 on the UK Education Top Free chart, and the same day it reached the top 100 of Education Top Grossing. It estimates over 10k cumulative installs, roughly 40% from organic search. No paid promotion of the app itself shows up on TikTok, and nobody on X mentions it. Whether it bought Apple Search Ads can't be seen. Judging by the reviews, users came for the name "Testi": learner word of mouth, driving instructors, and AI assistants all funnel people toward that name.

The AI assistant channel deserves its own note: Gemini recommends apps whose names match, without checking who the developer is. It's a new entry point that almost nobody is exploiting and almost nobody is guarding against.

### Where the money comes from: show people an "earlier slot" first, then charge

The store listing is fairly honest: a learning app with 54 guides, a road sign library, checklists and an AI chat coach, with a line saying "We do not automatically book or hold any test slots," filed under Education.

What you get after opening it is different. A review from Oct 25 lays out the flow clearly: you first enter your target test date, then it shows you a blurred "earlier available date." Many people assume paying gets them cancellation alerts, and only after paying do they find study material.

Pricing is $4.99 for 1 week, $12.99 for 1 months, $39.99 for 1 year, and $59.99 for lifetime (the UK store shows £4.99/week). Several reviews say that right after paying £4.99, an AI subscription pops up at £4.99/week and can't be skipped. One user wrote that they were charged nearly £16 in total.

The 11-06 store shows a rating of 2.33 from 139 ratings. The visible written reviews are all one-star, yet the average is 2.33, which implies a batch of silent high ratings. Roughly speaking, one-star and five-star counts suggest about a third are five-star. The likely cause is a rating prompt shown at launch, but this is unverified.

The UK Education Top Grossing chart has a low bar, and a weekly subscription at a high price means a few dozen paying users a day can place it in the top 50. There are probably many refunds, since reviews include people explaining how to request one, so net revenue can't be determined.

### It's not one person's project

Its bundle is `com.tpascompanion1157new.app`. Two others in the same niche: "Driving Test Cancellations +" (developer GIRTON TOWN CHARITY, listed 07-05, bundle ID 1084) and "Driving Test Cancellation 4All" (ABBOTT AVE APT, LLC, listed 07-24, ID 1158, riding on the old website 4All). All three appeared within five weeks, with subtitles reading "Guide to Driving Test Booking," and their IDs are close together.

Following the same naming pattern turns up apps for credit score checks, PDF scanning, NFC tools, pulse oximeters, ship tracking and passport photos, each under an unrelated-looking individual or company developer account, with one app per account. It looks like a studio mass-producing sock puppets: each account holds one app that either rides a famous name or a real need, with AI-generated content monetized through weekly subscriptions. This is an inference.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Where | Scale (App Store UK storefront, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Testi Driving Cancellations UK | Android and web; UK iOS removed | About 980k installs on Play | The name-borrowed original, which does real cancellation alerts |
| SlotSwap: UK Driving Test Swap | iOS, listed 08-10 | 373 ratings, 7 days +32 | Learners swapping slots with each other; real functionality, compliant with the new rules; growing twice as fast as the impostor |
| Hunter - Driving Cancellations | iOS, listed 09-21 | 10 ratings | Same developer as SlotSwap, does cancellation alerts |
| Zwitch Driving Test Swap UK | iOS, listed 02-02 | 50 ratings | Slot swap |
| Driving Test Cancellations + / 4All | iOS | 82 / 47 ratings | Suspected sock puppet of the same operator |
| DVSA website rescheduling | Web | All learners | Free, but you have to refresh manually again and again |

The most important one to look at is SlotSwap. It was listed the same day as the name-borrowing app and does what the new rules allow: both learners operate their own accounts and swap test dates. Its rating count is nearly three times the impostor's, and it grows twice as fast. A compliant alternative is outperforming within the same gap.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** Copying this is impersonation plus misleading paywalls. Don't. What's worth learning is the signal behind it: once regulators or platforms push a category's leading app off the stores, brand searches and real demand remain, and the first person to serve them compliantly gets free organic traffic.

**Who it's for:** Indie developers who track regulatory changes, are willing to build a genuinely useful small tool, and know app review well.

**Who it's not for:** Anyone hoping to make quick money by renaming an app and adding a paywall. Apple's 4.3, 5.2 (impersonation and IP) and 3.1.2 (subscription misleading) rules can clear this kind of app in one sweep at any time, and one complaint from the original brand is enough. People who want a durable product but won't touch regulatory grey areas should stay away too.

**How to do it:** In the UK driving test market, SlotSwap already owns "slot swapping." What's left is user-operated assistance: alerts for changes to test dates (telling you to check DVSA yourself, not scraping the system for you), comparisons of nearby test centres, and study schedules combining theory and practical tests. A bigger play is turning the signal into a habit: watch regulatory notices like DVSA's and posts titled "X is gone from app store," check whether the same leading app still exists in other countries' storefronts, and where a gap opens, build the compliant version there.

**How to acquire users:** Use category keywords, not other brands' names, such as "driving test cancellations," "test swap," "earlier driving test." Explain the difference between you and Testi directly to driving instructors and in Facebook groups for new drivers. Write the App Store page clearly so AI assistants can accurately describe what you do.

**When to move:** In the UK this gap already has several players competing for it, so the window is measured in months. For gaps opened by other regulatory changes, it depends on local enforcement tempo, usually the first three to six months after a new rule takes effect.

**Signs you've misread it:** The real Testi returns to UK iOS; after Apple clears this category of app in bulk, SlotSwap-style compliant products also stop growing (showing that demand was really propped up by the rule-breaking "auto-grab"); or DVSA itself launches cancellation alerts.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Platform event: a brand-search gap left after the original was pulled** : the real Testi id1170907024 is at apps.apple.com/gb 404, but our library only has it in in/mu/ng/ru; the official site says iPhone users should use testi.app; a Reddit thread titled "Testi is gone from appstore"; the DVSA says 17 apps were removed (The Independent 2026-06-12)

- **Verified** **Riding on the brand name "Testi" in store search** : the name differs from the original by just a "UK"; review: "Not the right Testi — My driving instructor told me…"; in AppInsider's model, natural search accounts for 38% of installs

- **Verified** **AI assistant recommendation (Gemini)** : 2026-10-12 review "Gemini suggested this app"

- **Verified** **Brand recognition for Testi built up by driving schools, word of mouth and TikTok (for the original)** : TikTok #testiapp learner videos; Facebook groups asking whether Testi still works

- Inferred **Paid acquisition / Apple Search Ads** : none found; neither TikTok nor x-radar shows any promotion for it

- Inferred **Review prompting** : all 29 written reviews are 1 stars, yet the average is 2.33; the math suggests roughly 1/3 of the 5-star ratings come without text

## Testi Driving Cancellations (iOS id6795931090) research report

> Storefronts: in our library this app is only recorded in gb (app.seen_in = gb); it has never charted in the other 114 storefronts. Competitor analysis focuses on gb. Data as of 2026-11-06.

### Bottom line

It isn't a product that grew on its own. It **rides the name** of an empty slot: the UK's top cancellation-slot app, "Testi Driving Cancellations UK" (Testi Apps Limited, claiming 4.5M downloads), was **pulled from the UK iOS store** after DVSA's 2026-05-12 rule change. Users still searched App Store for "Testi" on recommendations from driving instructors, classmates and Gemini, and what they found was this near-identical-name shell, listed 2026-08-10. It has only AI-generated study guides. The opening screen shows a fake prompt, "enter your test date, blurred earlier slots shown," then a **£4.99/week hard paywall followed by a second AI subscription wall** that monetizes it. Its differentiation is "the name is Testi" plus "the real Testi is gone from UK iOS." Nothing else.

- 2026-11-06 lookup shows a rating of 2.33 across 139 ratings; version 2.0.4 (2026-10-27); 120 MB; English only.

- AppInsider record: 2026-09-25 was first detected when it ranked #51 on the UK Education Top Free chart and entered the top 100 of UK Education Top Grossing the same day; 2026-10-22 passed 100 ratings; its estimated cumulative installs are 10k+, with natural search at 38% of its model's sources (https://appinsider.io/app/testi-driving-cancellations-6795931090).

- Pricing (from the store listing): 1 weekly $4.99, January $12.99, 1-year $39.99, lifetime $59.99, plus a separate AI subscription.

- The 29 written reviews in our library are **all 1 stars** , yet the average is 2.33. If there are only 1-star and 5-star ratings, the math puts about 1/3 of them at 5 stars, which points to a batch of text-less high ratings. My guess is a rating prompt fires on launch (review prompting); not verified.

### 2. Why it took off

#### 2.1 Platform event: the real Testi was pulled from UK iOS, leaving a brand-name gap

- From **2026-05-12, only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel a test** ; using unofficial services to scan the booking system is banned (gov.uk, "Changes to driving test booking rules in 2026"; DVSA 2026-06-12 bulletin [content.govdelivery.com/accounts/UKDVSA/bulletins/41b9283](https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/UKDVSA/bulletins/41b9283)).

- The Independent, 2026-06-12: under DVSA pressure, **17 apps that resold test slots were removed from the major stores** (https://www.the-independent.com/travel/news-and-advice/dvsa-driving-test-booking-rules-b2994822.html).

- The real Testi (id1170907024, bundle com.kfirapps.testi) now shows **404** at apps.apple.com/gb; our library has it only in the in / mu / ng / ru storefronts. Elsewhere it is renamed "Testi - Driving Test UK," with a description reading "We removed tests availability from the app." The official site testi-app.co.uk says "On iPhone? Testi now runs at testi.app, nothing to install," so iPhone users were sent to the web version. The Android version is still up (Google Play library: ~980k installs). A Reddit post in r/LearnerDriverUK is titled "Testi is gone from appstore."

- Demand hasn't gone anywhere: UK test slots have long waitlists, and black-market slots sell for £500 (NAO report, as relayed by The Independent). Facebook groups keep asking "does Testi still work?"

#### 2.2 How users arrive: brand-name search, word of mouth and AI send people in

- The name "Testi Driving Cancellations" differs from the real brand "Testi Driving Cancellations UK" by just "UK." Users search "Testi" in the UK App Store, the real one is gone, and this is what's left.

- Direct evidence from reviews:
    - 2026-09-22 "Not the right Testi. My driving instructor told me some of his other students had luck with Testi. This is NOT the right service."
    - 2026-10-12 "Omg **Gemini suggested this app** and I thought I could rely on the word."
    - 2026-09-06 "I want to change and get new test date with this app…"

- Users came in expecting "Testi = cancellation-slot app." That perception was built by driving-school word of mouth, TikTok videos (searching "testi app" turns up a batch of 2025–2026-year-old UK learner videos, such as #testiapp) and AI assistant recommendations.

- **No evidence it runs its own ads** : neither TikTok search nor x-radar shows any promotional content for this app. The @testi.uk account on TikTok is a different slot-selling account, unrelated to it. Whether it runs Apple Search Ads is unknown.

#### 2.3 How it gets paid: fake opening prompt + two paywalls

- 2026-10-25 review: "when downloaded it asks for **target test date** , and shows **blurry suggestion for early date available** , people pay thinking it will provide cancellation notification, but just provides study material."

- Multiple reviews say that after paying £4.99, they were **immediately asked to pay another £4.99/week for AI** , with no way to skip (09-06, 10-05, 10-30, 11-01). One person was charged about £16 in total.

- The listing says "We do not automatically book or reserve any slots," and it is filed under Education rather than Productivity. This leaves an out for review and for the DVSA: literally, it is a "study guide," not a slot-hunting tool.

- Result: ranked #49–80 on the UK Education Top Grossing chart. The bar for UK education top-grossing is low, and the weekly price is high, so a small number of downloads can hold that rank. Refunds are probably significant (reviews urge others to request them), and net revenue is unclear.

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Testi Driving Cancellations UK(Testi Apps Limited) | iOS (pulled in the UK) / Android / web at testi.app | 2016-2019 | Claims 4.5M downloads; ~980k installs on Play; 400+ ratings on iOS in other stores | The brand being piggybacked on. The real one does slot alerts and one-tap DVSA login; iPhone users have already been sent to the web |
| SlotSwap: UK Driving Test Swap(ALDEMA) | iOS | 2026-08-10 | gb 373 ratings, 7 daily new 32, #78 on Education Top Free | Lets learners swap test slots with each other; the real function is there, growing at twice its speed |

### 4. Same template being copied in bulk (likely an app matrix)

- Its bundle is `com.tpascompanion1157new.app`; two other apps in the same niche are `com.DrivingTestGuide1084vWQ.app` (GIRTON TOWN CHARITY) and `com.DrivingTestGuideUK1158Rxq.app` (ABBOTT AVE APT, LLC). All three use the same "name + number + random letters + .app" naming, the numbers 1084, 1157 and 1158 are close together, and the three apps went live one after another within 2026-07-05 to 08-10 over five weeks, all with the subtitle "Guide to Driving Test Booking" (seen in the App Store "You might also like" section).

- The library also turns up a batch of apps using the same bundle naming, each tied to a seemingly unrelated individual or company developer account, with one app per account, all riding niches that have clear demand: Credit Score Check (GREAT LITTLE SHOPS LIMITED), Lens PDF Scanner (Theresa Jackson), NFC Tools (Data Factor SIA), Pulse Oximeter (ABBOTT AVE LLC), Urbex: Abandoned World × 3 (Oleksii Shevchenko / Emily Johnson / Heather Christenson), Marine Traffic & Ship Tracker+ (PROPERTIES BY JOANNE LTD), and Passport Photo Maker ++ (SAPONO E.E.).

- This looks like a studio borrowing or buying other developers' accounts to stack dummy apps, each one riding a famous name or a trending need, monetized with weekly subscriptions and AI-generated content. Inference, not verified. James Stephens has only this one app under his name.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- The product has no real differentiation, and the features don't match the name: 54 AI-written guide articles, 35 road signs, and one AI chat.

- The only real differentiators are two: ① it holds the brand search term "Testi"; ② on UK iOS the real Testi happens to be gone. Those two things are the whole reason it can run.

- The revenue comes from users who mistake it for a test-slot tool. 100% of reviews are one-star, and many shout "scam". It could be pulled by Apple under 4.3 / 5.2 (IP, counterfeiting) / 3.1.2 (misleading subscriptions), or Testi could file a complaint. How long it lasts depends on when review catches up.

### 6. What's worth borrowing (only the structure of the play, not the impersonation or the misleading parts, which I don't recommend copying)

- **When a regulator or platform pulls a major app from one store, brand search traffic stays behind there** . That's a signal you can monitor systematically. Watch DVSA-type regulatory notices and "X is gone from app store" posts, and compare whether the same app is listed across storefronts (our library's availability / seen_in).

- The compliant route: build a legit alternative in the gap, with a **real feature** (like SlotSwap, which lets learners swap test slots among themselves, in line with the new rule that the learner has to do the action), and use legit category keywords like "driving test cancellations" and "test swap". SlotSwap added 32 ratings in 7 days, which beats a name-squatting shell.

- The UK education Top Grossing chart has a low bar. High-priced weekly subscriptions can chart with only a small number of downloads.

- AI assistants (Gemini) will steer users toward apps with "similar names". That's a new distribution channel that hasn't gotten much attention yet.

### 7. Still unclear

- The exact date and reason the real Testi left the UK iOS store: was it one of the 17 DVSA cases, or a voluntary withdrawal? From its release notes and the official site, the timing falls between 2026-07-21 and 2026-05 (08). Not verified.

- Whether it runs Apple Search Ads or bids on the "Testi" keyword: unknown.

- Whether the 5-star rating was solicited: unknown.

- Refund rate and net revenue: unknown.

- Who is behind the matrix and how many accounts there are in total: inference.

### Visibility

Barely anyone knows about it yet: no media or X posts have covered this app, and no one has shared revenue. There are only auto-aggregator pages like AppInsider and chartoo, and user one-star reviews on the App Store. What's being discussed is the DVSA rule change and the genuine Testi, not this app.
