Hey AI: AI Video Generator (formerly Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator) · Oleh Iskrenko

The official app left and it took over the same name: how an AI video app caught the iPhone demand left behind by Hailuo

What it is An AI video generation app built by an individual developer (text-to-video, image-to-video, dance and effect templates). It can't be used without a subscription, sold as a weekly subscription plus credit packs.

Why it took off The official Hailuo iOS app was pulled from the App Store, but the official side still hires TikTok creators in Brazil and elsewhere to teach people to "open the Hailuo app and pick a template". iPhone users who search for Hailuo on the App Store land on this app, which has the same name as the official one.

CHow you could follow it Don't ride trademarked names. What's worth learning is watching for gaps where a big brand is absent from a platform, catching the demand with a generic name, shipping a clone of whatever trend template the official side pushes within a day or two, and offering a free trial that actually works.

Grade C: it relies on borrowing the official name plus a platform gap. Three copycats have already been cleared and it was forced to rename itself. The official app could return to iOS at any time, so the window is closing and the scale is small. What's worth learning is the approach of finding gaps and catching traffic by following the official creator marketing. Barely anyone knows about it yet

Hey AI is an AI video app built by a Ukrainian-named indie developer. It has been live for about two and a half months and has collected roughly 1,400 ratings worldwide, with 371 of them from the US, where it has never charted in a category. It spent no money on marketing. It did one thing: MiniMax's Hailuo AI official iOS app disappeared from the App Store in 2026 April, and this app went live under the exact name "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator", catching on iPhone the demand others had paid to build. This piece covers how it did that, how much is left, and what here is worth learning and what will backfire if you copy it.

A Brazilian who wanted to do the three-person dance

In 2026 Oct 1, Brazilian TikTok creator @geracaotechss posted a video: open the Hailuo AI app, pick the "parking lot dance" template, upload a photo of three people, tap Create video. The video reached 4.15M views (TikTok, 11-06). 10 days later, another Brazilian creator, @brasziw, posted "making this viral video with my girlfriend", reaching 8.48M views; his Linktree links to a MiniMax partnership.

In Oct 6, a one-star review appeared on the Brazil App Store:

Baixei só pra fazer o vídeo da trend das três pessoas dançando, não tem o vídeo para fazer a montagem. (I downloaded it only to make the trend of three people dancing, and the template isn't in it.)

This user thought they were getting Hailuo. Searching Hailuo on iPhone, the official app isn't there. The first result, with an identical name, is this app, which developer Oleh Iskrenko published in Aug 19.

What it is

A standard AI video generator: text-to-video, image-to-video, AI dance (several moves like I Know, Grr, Lit Bounce), 3D cartoon characters ("Strawberry Diva", "Business Cat"), AI image generation and editing, plus a row of ready-made effects: animating old photos, cinematic dolly shots, Halloween packs. It likely wraps a third-party video model's API (inference; I haven't verified which provider).

The monetization is a hard paywall: no subscription, no generation. Weekly subscription 300 credits, monthly 600 credits, US in-app purchases from $6.99 to $129.99 (App Store, 11-06). One US review said "it charged $8.99 up front, which only got me 3 image edits, and then pushed me to buy credits".

The developer has only this one app under their name. In Nov 4 it shipped version 1.1.1, renaming the app in every storefront to "Hey AI: AI Video Generator"; in Brazil it's "Hey AI: Gerador de Vídeos". The release notes only say "fixed a crash on first launch".

Why this one

The official app really is gone. The official Hailuo iOS app (NANONOBLE PTE. LTD., 2025-02 listing, 4.8 rating) shows on applecensorship.com as last appearing in any storefront on 2026-04-18, and in October it could not be found in any of 64 storefronts. A post in the Hailuo subreddit titled "Hailuo disappeared from the iOS App Store". No reason for the removal has been published; posters guess it relates to Apple sign-in.

The demand hasn't gone anywhere. The official app is still on Google Play, with 27.8M installs and still climbing 7k over the past 527 days (Google Play, 11-06). MiniMax is still paying creators in Brazil, Poland and Morocco to teach people to "open the Hailuo app and pick a template". Android users can follow along without issue; iPhone users who search land on this app.

The name is identical. In storefronts like Austria, Japan, Canada and Sweden it kept its old name until recently: "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator", "Hailuo AI:AI動画生成", "Hailuo AI: KI-Videogenerator", exactly matching the official app's original name. A US reviewer called it "Hailo AI", and another wrote "This app was good last year it's so bad now". This app didn't exist last year; the reviewer took it for the official one.

It wasn't the only one grabbing the name at the time: "Hailuo AI - Video Maker", "Hailuo Ai - Video Generation", "Hailuo AI - Video Generator", "Minimax ai: ai video generator"... By Nov 6, three of them could no longer be found on the App Store, and the rest sit at 0 ratings. This app renamed itself before this round of cleanup and survived.

How big it is and where it stands now

Numbers (App Store, 11-06)
Global ratingsAbout 1,300–1,500 reviews (estimate, summed across storefronts)
US371 reviews, 4.3 stars, never made the top 200 in Photo & Video
Brazil244 reviews, 3.8 stars, category Top Free and Top Grossing ranks between 78 and 105
OtherIndia 92, Nigeria 62, Vietnam 52, Turkey 45
Small-country top-grossing chartsNo. 13 in Top Grossing for the category in Anguilla, No. 21 in Yemen, No. 38 in Guatemala, No. 42 in Pakistan

The US has 371 reviews but has never charted, which means nearly all of them came from search. Small-country top-grossing charts have a very low bar, and a handful of subscriptions can get an app on them. That shows someone is paying, but not scale; I couldn't find actual revenue.

Before and after the rename (summed across all charted stores): from 10-30 to 11-04, daily new ratings went from 22–36; 11-05 dropped to 13 ratings, while 11-06 was 12 ratings; charted stores fell from 77 to 62. Only two days of data, but the direction is clear.

One more point: in Nov 6, searching "hailuo" on the US and Brazil App Stores still put it at No. 1. The name changed, but the keyword is still there (inference). So the drop isn't all about losing search position; more likely the Brazilian trend peaked and users didn't recognize the app after the rename. Both factors probably play a part.

How the money comes back, and what it costs

It spends almost nothing on acquisition itself. The demand was built up by MiniMax's creator payments; this app just picks it up at the iPhone end. Users arrive with the urge to "make that trend" and immediately hit the paywall, and tapping "7-day free trial" gets them charged. Nearly every Brazilian review is one star:

  • "It says there's a 7-day free trial, but I was charged right away" (10-12)
  • "It took almost 100 reais from my card, and it wants to keep charging me every month" (10-19)
  • "You can't cancel the subscription in the app, so I had to have my bank freeze the card. Apple should do something about this company" (10-13)
  • "golpe" (scam), appearing again and again

Bad reviews and refunds are the price it pays. As long as search traffic holds, the math probably still works out (inference).

Who it's competing with

ProductScale (11-06)How it differs
Hailuo officialGoogle Play 27.8M installsThe real thing: its own model, its own templates, paying creators; once it's back on iOS, this path closes

VideoGPT56k ratingsOld-school wrapper that wins on long-running ASO and paid acquisition, not by riding a specific brand
DanceHit4,439 ratingA dance-template app that launched in the same period, making its own templates and buying its own traffic
Grok Imagine, Meta AI, SoraHundreds of millions of usersFree or bundled into big products. It doesn't compete with these; it only captures people searching "Hailuo".

It has no real product differentiation, and reviews say templates are few, results are poor, and credits are expensive. Its one real asset is the first spot under the "Hailuo" keyword in the App Store.

If it were you

Bottom line: Don't copy it. It's capturing a gap that's already taken and being closed, and the scale is small. What's worth learning is how it spotted the gap, plus the idea of riding traffic from the big brand's creator marketing.

Who it's for: Small teams that already have an AI video or image wrapper with templates and can ship a new app in a week or two, and that are willing to watch every week for which big brand is missing from which platform.

Who it's not for: Indie devs who want a long-term brand; people who can't handle a screen full of one-star "golpe" reviews, refunds, and sudden takedowns; and anyone with a single developer account who has no backup if it gets banned.

How to do it:

  • Watch for gaps: a big brand's app is pulled from one store, missing in one country, or only on Android (or only on iOS), while demand keeps rising. Hailuo's gap is already taken, and PixVerse had one before it. Check every week for who's next.
  • Don't use the brand's name. Three of its peers are already unsearchable, and it had to rename itself. Use a generic name and spell out the features in the description. Targeting descriptive keywords instead of trademarked ones lasts longer.
  • Follow the templates, not the brand. When the brand's creator partners push a trend ("parking lot three-person dance", "Zero Chemistry", "hamburger"), ship the same template within a day or two and name it using the trend's name. Half the complaints in Brazil were "the template from the ad isn't here." It failed at this, and this is the part you can get right.
  • Keep a free trial behind the paywall that actually works: let people make a trend video before you charge. Nearly all of its bad reviews were "free result, then charged", which is what pushed its rating in markets like Brazil down to 3 stars.

How to acquire users: The creator videos the brand is paying for are your ads. Scroll TikTok every day for trend keywords tied to the brand (in Portuguese, Spanish, and Polish, where creators are cheaper and the brand posts more often), and ship a template as soon as one starts gaining traction. Then recruit a few small creators to post "how to do this trend on iPhone" and catch the iPhone half of the same traffic wave.

Before the window closes: The Hailuo window is already closing. MiniMax could re-list its iOS app at any time (PixVerse did exactly this), and once it's back, search rank 1 goes back to the brand.

What would show I'm wrong: If Hey AI's daily new ratings return to 30+ a month after the rename, or it charts in the US, then it's relying on more than the name, and the product itself keeps people, so this assessment is too low. If the official Hailuo returns to iOS by 2026 end and Hey AI's new ratings stay near 0, then this path was a one-time thing.

Where users come from
  • Verified App Store brand-name search for "Hailuo" (name-riding): the old names in the at/jp/ca/se/ve stores, and what AppBrain and Apptopia captured, all read "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator", identical to the official app's id 6741675037. The official app disappeared from the App Store after 2026-04-18 (applecensorship). It has 371 ratings in the US but never charted there. A us review says "This app was good last year", so users took it for the official app.
  • Inferred Paid TikTok creators hired by MiniMax, mostly in Brazil, with the traffic spilling over to this app: @geracaotechss 10-01 a parking-lot three-person dance trend with 4.15M views, plus a partnership video tagged #publi; @brasziw 10-11 8.48M views, with a MiniMax partnership link in the Linktree. Both teach viewers to "open the Hailuo AI app and pick a template." Brazil's 1-star reviews concentrate in 10-03 to 11-02, with complaints like "the three-person dance trend isn't there" and "the video from the ad isn't in the app."
  • Inferred Self-funded Meta/TikTok ads: not tracked in the metaads or tiktokads libraries. The "propaganda" in Brazilian reviews probably refers to the creator videos.

Research date: 2026-11-06. Stores checked: all appstore library storefronts (grouped by cc, 62 with app_profile). Focus: us, br, fr, in, de, jp, ca, and small-country top charts. Also checked: the googleplay library, the metaads and tiktokads libraries, TikTok (TikHub), x-radar, Jina web search, Apple lookup, and review RSS.

Bottom line

It launched as a wrapper, using the exact same name, "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator", as the official app, after the official Hailuo AI (MiniMax) iOS app left the App Store on 2026-04 (2026-08-19). Its traffic comes mainly from MiniMax's paid creator campaigns in Brazil and elsewhere, which say "open the Hailuo AI app and pick a template". iPhone users searching for Hailuo in the App Store couldn't find the official app, so they found this one. It makes money with a hard paywall plus a weekly subscription. Around 2026-11-04 it was renamed "Hey AI" (probably after a trademark complaint or app review), and new ratings dropped noticeably after that. It got where it is through name-riding and a platform gap, not the product itself.

1. What it is

  • Developer "Oleh Iskrenko" (individual account, only this one app, developer id 6795958791), first released 2026-08-19, Photo & Video category, iOS 18+, 191 MB, 17 languages (Apple lookup / App Store page, 2026-11-06).
  • Features: text-to-video, image-to-video, AI dance templates, 3D cartoon characters, AI image generation and editing, and a pile of ready-made effect templates (Live Portrait, Living Memory, Halloween pack...). This is the standard menu for this kind of app. It most likely runs on a third-party video model API (inferred; I didn't verify which provider).
  • Pricing: generating requires a subscription ("Generating requires an active subscription"). Subscriptions are weekly 300 credits / monthly 600 credits / 6 months. In-app purchases in the US store run $6.99–$129.99 (Unlock Premium $12.99 / $29.99 / $129.99, credit packs $6.99–$29.99). Reviews include "$14.99 a week, then $20 a week" (au) and "$8.99 to start, only enough to edit 3 images" (us).

2. Data (appstore library + Apple lookup)

  • Rating counts (2026-11-06 lookup): us 371 (4.29 stars), br 242 (3.81), in 92, ng 62, vn 52, tr 45, th 41, fr 36, sn 36, kr 35, jp 34... Global total roughly 1,300–1,500. The data card's 995 figure only counts stores charting that day, and the US isn't in it. The US has never made the top 200,371 in Photo & Video by ratings; its ratings came from search.
  • New ratings (data card, combined across charted stores): 10-30 to 11-04 per day 22–36; dropped from 11-05 to 13,11-06 and then to 12. Charted store count fell from 77 (11-04) to 62 (11-06). The rename (released in version 1.1.1,11-04) lines up with the timing of this decline, though only two days of data were checked.
  • Brazil: best Photo & Video rank was 78–105 (bouncing between free and top-grossing charts), 1–5 new ratings per day, and 10-28 to 11-06 it rose from 214 to 242 (app_day).
  • Small-country top grossing: Anguilla (ai) overall top grossing 162, category top grossing 13; Yemen category top grossing 21, Guatemala 38, Uganda 39, Pakistan 42, Algeria 44 (data card, 11-06). These storefronts have a low bar, so a few subscriptions are enough to chart. That shows people are paying, but the scale is tiny.
  • Reviews (Apple RSS): 17 br reviews, nearly all 1 stars, calling it "golpe" (a scam), saying "it said 7 days free, then charged right away", "the video from the ad isn't in the app", and "I downloaded it for the three-person dance trend, and that template isn't in here." One us review says "This app was good last year it's so bad now": this app didn't exist last year, so the user mistook it for the official Hailuo. Another calls it "Hailo AI" directly.

3. Key evidence: riding the Hailuo name

  • In the appstore library app_name table, this app still carries the old name "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator" in the at, jp, ca, se, and ve stores, along with "Hailuo AI:AI動画生成" and "Hailuo AI: KI-Videogenerator". The Apple developer page, AppBrain, Apptopia, and chrome-stats also captured the old name (Jina search for "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator" Oleh Iskrenko). 11-06 Apple lookup shows every storefront now reads "Hey AI".
  • The official Hailuo AI iOS app (id 6741675037, NANONOBLE PTE. LTD., listed 2025-02-19, 4.8 stars) uses the exact same name, "Hailuo AI: AI Video Generator". applecensorship.com records it as "2026-04-18 last seen in any store", and 10-12 it couldn't be found in 64 stores (https://applecensorship.com/app-store-monitor/app/6741675037). A Reddit post on r/HailuoAiOfficial, "The Hailuo app is gone from the iOS App Store", speculates about reasons like dropped Apple sign-in, and notes "PixVerse did this too".
  • The official app is still on Android: Google Play ai.hailuo.video has 27.8M installs, +7k over the last 527 days (googleplay library). Demand has stayed strong; there's just no official iOS entry point.
  • Another group is also grabbing this name: "Hailuo AI - Video Maker" (Colonial Cars, Inc., 2026-07-25, now 0 rating), "Hailuo Ai - Video Generation" (id 6792701135), "Hailuo AI - Video Generator" (id 6795167437), "Minimax ai: ai video generator" (id 6805792036), and "HailuoPic" (Malik Noman, 2026-04-20). 11-06 still shows up in the Apple lookup; 6792701135, 6795167437 and 6805792036 are already gone. Looks like a cleanup wave (my guess: MiniMax filed trademark complaints, or Apple cleared them itself). Hey AI survived the rename.

4. Where users come from

  1. App Store search for "Hailuo" (confirmed): the name is an exact match, the official app isn't on the store, so searching "Hailuo" mostly lands on this one. It has 371 ratings in the US but never charted in a category, so the traffic has to be search. User reviews also treat it as the official app.
  2. TikTok creators paid by MiniMax (confirmed the posts exist; that they funnel here is inference, but the comments match): Brazilian creators kept posting "open the Hailuo AI app, pick a trend template, add a photo, tap Create video":
    • @geracaotechss 2026-10-01 "parking lot dance trend, add a photo of 3 people", 4.15M views; 10-18 this one carries #publi (sponsored), 396k; 10-31 "Zero Chemistry" template, 103k.
    • @brasziw (46k followers) 10-11 "making this viral video with my girlfriend", 8.48M views; 10-18 206k, 10-22 313k, 11-04 67k. His Linktree links a MiniMax partner page (agent.minimax.io).
    • @falamelo_ (115k followers) 10-30 burger trend, 59k.
    • Similar posts from @chris.creates.7 in Poland and @aziz.rofix0 in Morocco got between 112k and 159k views. These posts promote the official Hailuo (Android or web), but Brazilian iPhone users search the App Store and land here. Brazilian negative reviews cluster between 10-03 and 11-02, right after the 10-01 video with 4.15M views, and one review specifically complains that the "three people dancing" trend isn't there, which matches geracaotechss's post. That's why Brazil became its second-largest rating market, and why its Portuguese name "Gerador de Vídeos" fits.
  3. Paid acquisition (unverified): the "propaganda" (ads) mentioned in Brazilian reviews could mean the creator videos above, or the app could be running its own ads. The metaads and tiktokads libraries don't track this app or developer, but that doesn't mean it isn't advertising.
  4. Media / X / Reddit: x-radar searches for "Hey AI video generator" and "hailuo app" return 0 results over the last 60 days. The web only has auto-generated pages from AppBrain, Similarweb and Apptopia.

5. How the money comes back

Users come from search demand that other people paid to create, so its own acquisition cost is close to zero. After download it goes straight to a hard paywall: a weekly subscription plus credit packs. Users think they installed the official Hailuo, tap "free trial", and get charged right away. Brazilian reviews include "charged almost 100 reais" and "have to freeze my card at the bank". Refunds and negative reviews (Brazil 3.8 stars) are the cost, but as long as the search traffic lasts the model pays back. Its top 50 placement on a small country's Top Grossing chart and its 90–105 in Brazil's category Top Grossing both point to real subscriptions; I didn't verify the scale.

It wins on an exact name match with the official app and renamed in time, before the wave of takedowns.

7. Differentiation

There's no real product differentiation here: the features, templates, and credit-based subscription are all standard for this category, and reviews say the templates are thin and the results weak. The actual "differentiator" is ranking #1 when you search "Hailuo" in the App Store. It uses the exact same name as the official app, and the timing lined up with the official iOS app being absent and MiniMax pushing its trend templates hard in Brazil and elsewhere. That's why it took off. Since renaming to Hey AI, that top spot is gone, and 11-05 and 11-06 new ratings and chart placements are both falling.

8. What to borrow

  • Watch for gaps where a big brand is pulled from or missing on a platform: the official app has 27M Android installs but no iOS listing, so search demand spills over on its own. Capturing it with the brand term or a near-match name costs almost nothing in acquisition. The risks are trademark complaints and takedowns, and most of its peers have already been cleared.
  • Ride the creator marketing the big brand pays for: the brand spends money teaching users "open X's app and pick template Y", and a capture app only needs the template name to match to catch that traffic (it added 15 trend template packs in version 1.1.1).
  • A hard paywall + weekly subscription + credit packs pays back fastest on the impulse downloads that borrowed-name traffic brings, at the cost of bad reviews and refunds.

9. Uncertain

  • Whether it runs its own Meta / TikTok ads (not tracked in the library), and what the "propaganda" in Brazilian reviews actually refers to.
  • The exact reason for the rename (trademark complaint or App Store review), and whether the official Hailuo returns to iOS. If the official app comes back, this route closes.
  • Which model provider's API it uses, the cost per generation, and its real revenue scale.
  • Whether developer "Oleh Iskrenko" is an individual or sits under a studio (the name looks Ukrainian; not verified).
