A French welder turned site cardboard arithmetic into an app, posted two TikToks a day, and got it into the top 20 French tools chart in five days
What it is An offline calculator for plumbers, welders and sheet-metal workers: 60 tools for cutting, saddle cuts, development drawings and welder settings. Free core, with a 4.99€/month subscription.
Why it took off The maker is a certified welder himself, and the tools hit what peers do every day on cardboard. What really drove volume was that from 10-30 on he posted two real job-site videos a day on TikTok. Pure organic reach, which also covered the whole French-speaking market.
BHow you could follow it Come from a hands-on trade yourself, or partner with a craftsperson willing to be on camera every day. Pick a different trade (electrician, HVAC, carpentry) or a different language (Spanish, German, Portuguese welders) and build the same offline toolkit, get users through short job-site videos, build word of mouth first, then add subscriptions and sell multi-account plans to companies.

Early Nov 4, the TikTok account @welduppocket posted a half-minute job-site video with one line of copy: "WeldUp Pocket, l'application de référence pour les professionnels du métal" (the go-to app for metalworking professionals). Within two days it had 120k views. The comments didn't praise the app. People argued about something more technical: rolling a steel plate into a cylinder, whether you should use a press brake segment by segment or go straight to a four-roll plate roller. The same day, the app's Android installs jumped by 1,200 times in one day, from a previous tens per day. Two days later it reached #20 in the French App Store free chart for tools. The maker is Lison Robin, a certified boiler and pipe welder. This piece explains what the app is, why it took three months to start moving, how it makes money, and who could follow the same path.
What it is: the calculator in a plumber's, welder's or sheet-metal worker's pocket
In total there are 60+ tools, plus reference material on flange standards, material grades and weld symbols, and it can export pipe layouts to ISO drawings and PDF. The details follow job-site habits: it works without a connection (the description says "under a tank, in a trench, in a ship's hull"), the buttons are big enough to press with gloves on, you can type fractions like "3 1/2", it supports metric and imperial, it organises by job site, and one message sends a whole site's data. No sign-up, no ads.
Robin runs a small welding workshop, WeldUp, in a town in Loire-Atlantique. His site weldup.pro lists 7 ISO 9606 / NR 476 welding certifications and case studies in nuclear, shipbuilding and biomethane piping. This app is the only one under his developer account.
Why it took three months to start moving
The iOS version launched in August 2026 and the Android version in September. By Nov 1 the French store had collected 66 ratings in total, under one a day on average. On Google Play, after mid-October it added only 13 to 17 installs per day (averaged from weekly snapshots). The product was already out and the reviews were fine, but nobody knew it existed.
The turning point came on Oct 30. That day Robin shipped version 1.0 and changed TikTok from one post every few weeks to two posts a day, one around 1 a.m. and one around 9 a.m., with the same copy every time, original audio, and real job-site footage of welds, pipes and tools, overlaid with the app's interface. The numbers that followed (TikTok, as seen by 11-06):
| Posted | Views |
|---|---|
| 10-30 | 14k |
| 11-01 | 45k / 4k |
| 11-02 | 69k / 19k |
| 11-03 | 37k / 24k |
| 11-04 | 120k / 32k |
| 11-05 | 75k / 20k |
From Nov 1 to 5, the videos add up to about 440k views, and the account reached 11-06 followers at 7,558. Going by the API fields, none of these videos are ads or brand deals. I found no sign of TikTok ad spend, and couldn't check Meta. The same videos also ran on Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. No other creator mentions it, no media has covered it, and there's nothing on X. As far as I can tell, the founder's own account drove all of it.
The chart climbs followed the videos: it charted in the France App Store Utilities Top Free chart at #176 on 11-01, then 71, 35, 31,11-06 down to #20, and the same day it hit #151 on the overall France Top Free chart for the first time. Charting countries went from 2 to 18: Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Mauritius, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Luxembourg and so on, mostly French-speaking places. The French videos reached welders across the whole French-speaking world. On Google Play, 11-04 daily installs jumped from 1,927 to 3,173.
Take it with a grain of salt: the France Utilities Top Free chart has a low bar, and 11-06 only needed 6 new ratings a day worldwide to reach #20. The rank looks big, but the volume is still small. The official site claims "11k monthly active users" and 7,000+ downloads across both platforms, and those two numbers don't match, so don't trust the MAU figure yet.
Why did people watch? Because the videos show work their peers already know. The 120k-view video on 11-04, judging by the comments, is about "croquage" (cutting and rolling steel plate into a cylinder; my guess is the app works out where to make bends on a press brake), and the comments are full of sheet metal workers arguing over three-roll versus four-roll versus press brake, with someone showing off a newly installed plate roller, and others asking "Combien coûte l'application ?" (How much does the app cost?). Its persuasiveness comes from "a real welder using it on a job site," not from editing.
Why users stick around
These calculations are something these workers do every day. Comments from the France App Store:
- "La meilleure appli que j'ai eu la chance d'utiliser pratiquement tous les jours" (The best app I've been lucky enough to use almost every day, 10-07)
- "Sa aide vachement en chantier" (It's a huge help on site, 10-04)
- "J'ai essayé toutes les applications de tuyauterie… de loin la meilleure" (I've tried every pipe app, and this one is by far the best)
iOS 4.9 stars, 18 written reviews, 17 of them five-star. A lot of the reviews are really feature requests, like 11-03 One welder wrote: "Peut être penser à rajouter le temps de refroidissement entre la passe de remplissage et la passe de finition" (could you add a cooling time between the fill pass and the finish pass?). The developer replies to every one, and the site says "chaque suggestion reçoit une réponse" (every suggestion gets a reply).
Where the money comes from
10-30's 1.0 version added a subscription, WeldUp Pro: €4.99/month or €49.99/year, with a one-month free trial on the monthly plan. The everyday calculators stay free with no limits, and "preparation tools and shop documents" go into Pro. On Google Play, in-app purchases show as $3.99–$44.99. Before charging, the team posted a TikTok asking "WeldUp Pocket deviendra-t-elle payante ?" (Will WeldUp Pocket become paid?) to warn people. Even so, 11-03 still brought a three-star review: "L'application et devenue payante je trouve sa un peu dommage" (The app became paid, I find that a bit disappointing).
The second revenue stream is selling to companies: the TikTok bio and the website both say "Offres multi-comptes pro" and "Équiper une équipe" (multi-account business plans, to equip a whole crew), with Robin's personal email as the contact.
No outside data shows paid conversion or revenue. It appeared once on 11-01 at #103 on Belgium's Utilities Top Grossing chart, and it's not on France's Top Grossing chart. For now, the only fair claim is "people want to use it, and it has started making money," not "it's making money."
Who it's competing with
The category is old, but every player is small:
| Product | Scale | Compared with WeldUp |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe Trades Pro Calc (US, 2013) | 4,404 iOS ratings in the US store | English, imperial units, paid, leans toward plumbing, doesn't cover welding or sheet metal |
| Pipefitter / Pipefitter Pro (Polish developer, 2016 / 2022) | 18 and 6 iOS ratings in the France store, €7.99 / €11.99 one-time purchase | These were the main apps French users had, and they only handle pipe cutting |
| XPipe Pro(2026-08) | 0 ratings in France, 280 Android installs | Launched around the same time, paid downloads of about €18–20, no buzz |
| Weldmaster AI (France, 2026-02) | One creator promo video, 106k views | Photograph a welder and AI gives settings, aimed at beginners and hobbyists |
| Apps from Miller, ESAB, Fronius and other manufacturers | A dozen or so ratings each | Only serves the maker's own welders, only covers welding |
There are dozens of English single-function mini tools, one app per calculation. Nobody has put pipe, welding and sheet metal into one free, French, offline app. The top French apps were two paid tools by Polish developers with 24 ratings combined, and WeldUp passed them in three months. I also haven't seen anyone copy its approach yet.
What you can actually copy
The product isn't hard: 60 tools all rely on public geometry and process formulas, and someone who can code an app could copy the rough version in a few months. What's hard to copy is two other things: the maker is a trade insider, and people in the trade recognize them on TikTok. WeldUp sat for two and a half months with a dozen installs a day, then after switching to two job-site videos a day it charted within five days. The difference wasn't the product, it was distribution. Distribution worked because the person filming was already standing on a job site.
So "copying" comes in three levels of difficulty:
- Same approach, different trade: electricians, HVAC, plumbing (plomberie), carpentry, roofing, rebar. Whichever trade does its calculations on paper every day is the one to build for.
- Same trade, different language: WeldUp's interface supports 8 languages (including Arabic and Polish), but its videos and community are French only. Nobody has built content for Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian or Polish welders and plumbers yet.
- Fill the gaps it hasn't filled: multi-seat company accounts, crews sharing job-site data, and integration with welding procedure specifications (WPS). It has only just started on these.
If it were you
One judgment: this is a template for "insider builds the tool + the founder films short videos," the opportunity is real and nobody is crowding in yet. But the entry ticket is industry identity, the product itself is the easiest part, the market is small, and how much money it can make is still unknown.
Who it fits: developers who come from a skilled trade, or who can find an experienced tradesperson willing to appear on camera every day as a partner; people working in non-English-speaking markets.
Who it doesn't fit: people with no industry background who only code, and people planning to acquire users through paid ads or SEO. These users won't search "pipe calculator" in the App Store. They install it because they saw a peer using it on a job site on TikTok. It also isn't for anyone aiming for a big business: a single trade in a single country probably caps out around tens of thousands of professional users (estimate).
How to build it: pick one trade and one language, then build the 10 to 20 things that trade calculates every day. Make it offline, no account, large buttons, and let people enter numbers. Release it free, treat the comments as your demand pool, and reply to every one. Once the rating reaches 4.8+ with dozens of real reviews, move advanced tools and export into a subscription, and post a video warning users before charging. Only later sell the multi-account crew and company version.
How to get users: the partner tradesperson films on real job sites, two videos a day. The captions can stay the same, but the footage has to be the work itself. Choose process questions that spark arguments in the comments, such as what machine to roll plate with or how to cut elbows. When insiders argue, that's traffic. Post the same videos to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
Timing: there's no rush, but first-mover advantage is clear. Once a well-reviewed free tool exists for one trade in one language, latecomers have a hard time breaking in. WeldUp is already expanding into other languages, so anyone who wants to do welding and pipe should move before it makes videos in Spanish and German. That probably gives you about the next six months.
Signs you've misread it: after this wave of videos passes (see late November), if the France Utilities chart falls back below #100, and Android daily installs drop back to a few dozen, it was just riding a few viral videos, and when content stops, the traffic stops. If, after the subscription launches, reviews mentioning "devenue payante" (became paid) keep piling up and the rating drops below 4.5, it means this professional audience won't pay for an individual tool, and the money can only come from companies.

One line
WeldUp Pocket is an offline calculator built by a French tradesman for pipefitters (tuyauteur), welders (soudeur) and sheet-metal workers (chaudronnier). It has 60 tools: elbow and mitre cut layouts (baïonnette, coudes recoupés), branch saddle cuts (gueule de loup), pattern development (développé), welding parameters, and ISO piping drawing PDF export. No account, no ads. The developer, Lison Robin, is a certified boiler and pipe welder who runs a welding studio, WeldUp (weldup.pro), in Saint-Julien-de-Vouvantes, Loire-Atlantique. 2026-10-30 shipped version 1.0 and added a subscription, WeldUp Pro: 4.99€/month or 49.99€/year.
1. Why it took off
Get the numbers straight first
- iOS launch 2026-08-04 (data card; lookup shows 08-09). By 11-01, the French store had 66 ratings in total, averaging under 1 a day over three months (appstore database, app_day).
- 11-03 to 11-06 it suddenly accelerated: in the French Utilities Top Free chart it climbed from #176 (11-01) to #71, #35, #31,11-06 and then #20, and on the same day it first entered the French overall Top Free chart (#151). Storewide ratings went 70→79,11-06, +6 in a single day. The number of charted storefronts went from 2 to 18: mu, be, ch, sn, ca, tn, lu, dz… nearly all French-speaking (appstore database + data card).
- Android (com.weldup.weldup, listed 2026-09-09): weekly-averaged installs in the googleplay database were 09-22 616 → 10-27 1,833 → 11-03 1,927, and after mid-October it was only 13–17 a day. 11-04 jumped to 3,173 in one day (+1,246), which lines up exactly with the TikTok surge below.
Where users come from: the founder's own TikTok, pure organic reach, switched to posting daily from late October
TikTok account @welduppocket (TikHub, 2026-11-06): 7,558 followers, 37,106 total likes, 18 videos. The bio reads "L'application de référence pour les professionnels du métal ! … Offres multi-comptes pro : [email protected]".

| 11-06 (two videos) | 3,617 / 1,590 (just posted) |
- Before mid-October it posted only one video every few weeks. From 10-30, the day it shipped version 1.0, it switched to 2 videos a day, all with the same caption, "WeldUp Pocket, l'application de référence pour les professionnels du métal, disponible sur IOS et android #welder #pipeliner #welding #weldup", with original audio. From 11-01 to 11-05, over these 5 days, the videos added up to roughly 440k views.
- Going by the API fields, all of these are organic posts: is_ads=False, branded_content_type=0, adv_promotable=False. No evidence it runs TikTok ads. Our TikTok ad library only covers products that buy into Europe and are on the list, and this was not checked there.
- Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts carry the same videos; search results show instagram.com/reel/DfItVeGgs53, DfNOpLiAmKp, and youtube.com/shorts/rziknwlZABQ, HbaJVNZELh8. View counts were not captured.
- The video content is job-site footage: weld seams, pipes, tools, with the app's interface overlaid. Its credibility comes from "a real welder uses it": the site lists 7 valid ISO 9606 / NR 476 welding certifications, along with real projects in nuclear, shipbuilding and biomethane pipelines.
- Other channels: X (x-radar, last 90 days) returns 0 posts for "weldup"; no media coverage, no Product Hunt, no HN, no TrustMRR. Searching TikTok for "weldup" turns up no other creators mentioning it, only unrelated old #weldup tag videos. It's essentially certain this was built up by the founder's single account.
Why people stay, and why they pay
- These calculations were always part of the daily work: the description says "refont de tête ou sur un bout de carton depuis toujours" (always done in your head or on a scrap of cardboard). Reviews say "pratiquement tous les jours" (almost every day, 10-07), "Sa aide vachement en chantier" (it helps an awful lot on site, 10-04), and "on peut récupérer les documents en pdf" (you can get the documents as PDF, 09-26).
- Ratings are high and the developer replies fast: of 18 written iOS reviews, 17 are 5 stars. Many reviews directly request features, such as inert gas shielding (inertage) and interpass cooling times, and the developer replies to them. The site also says "chaque suggestion reçoit une réponse" (every suggestion gets a reply).
- Monetization: 10-30's 1.0 version puts "preparation tools and shop documents" into Pro, while the everyday tools stay free and unlimited, and the monthly plan comes with a one-month trial. Google Play lists in-app purchases at $3.99–$44.99. 11-03 has a 3-star review: "L'application et devenue payante je trouve sa un peu dommage" (the app became paid, a bit of a shame). The app's own TikTok also posted "WeldUp Pocket deviendra-t-elle payante ?" (will WeldUp Pocket become paid?) to warn users in advance. It also sells multi-seat plans to companies, as its TikTok bio and site both say: "Équiper une équipe" (equip a whole team). There is no external data on paid conversion or revenue, and it doesn't appear on bestseller charts (11-01 hit #103 on Belgium's Utilities Top Grossing chart, only once).
2. Competitors and differentiation
Who the competitors are
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (source) | How WeldUp differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pipe Trades Pro Calc(Calculated Industries) | iOS/Android | 2013 | US iOS 4,404 ratings, 7 days +15, US Utilities Top Grossing chart 172 (appstore database 11-06) | English, US units, leans toward plumbing and fluid calculations; paid; doesn't cover welding parameters or sheet-metal development |
| Pipefitter / Pipefitter Pro: Tuyauterie (Tomasz Szymanski, Poland) | iOS/Android | 2016 / 2022 | French-store iOS ratings of 18 and 6 respectively, 7.99€ / 11.99€ one-time purchase; Android Pipefitter about 16k installs (both databases) | Only handles pipe cutting; one-time payment; no content marketing; these were the main "tuyauterie" apps French tradespeople could use before |
| XPipe Pro: Pipefitter Calc(Jakub Trytek / XTECHNIK) | iOS/Android | 2026-08-30 | French-store iOS 0 ratings, 17.99–19.99€; Android 280 installs, 7 days +22 (both databases) | New competitors that launched nearly at the same time, paid downloads, no buzz |
| Pipe Fitter Calculator series (Kevin Morneault / LMF), Pipe Saddle Layout, FitterMaster, PipeBook, GearTech OS, and others | iOS | 2012–2026 | Each has only single-digit to a few dozen ratings (appstore database) | English single-function mini tools, one algorithm per app |
| Weldmaster AI | iOS/Android (France) | 2026-02 | Creator @remi_vhn's promo video, 106k views (TikHub) | Photograph a welding machine and AI gives the parameters, aimed at hobbyists and beginners; WeldUp is aimed at certified professional workers and sticks to deterministic calculations |
| Weld'z | iOS (France) | Around 2025-12 | Very small | Welder community; people share welds and competitions, it's not a tool |
| Manufacturer apps: Miller/Hobart welding calculator, ESAB parameter guide, Fronius WeldConnect, SSAB WeldCalc | iOS/Android | 2010–2018 | A few to a dozen or so ratings each | Only serve their own machines or steel, and only cover welding as a single trade |
| MetalFox and other web/PC layout software | Web | — | — | Desk-bound layout software, not suited for using on a phone at a job site |
Takeaway: this niche is old, but every player is small. No one has combined all three trades, localized it into French, made it free and offline, and designed it around how professional workers actually work. The former leaders in the French store were two paid tools from a Polish developer, with 24 ratings between them. WeldUp reached 74 in three months.
Where the differentiation is
- The maker is the user: a certified welder who is also a pipefitter turned the calculations they did on cardboard into a tool. The description and reviews repeatedly stress "Créée par un pro" (made by a professional) and "créé par des pros, pour des pros" (made by pros, for pros).
- One app for three trades, 60+ tools: pipefitting, welding and sheet metal are all in it, plus a reference library of flange standards, material grades and weld symbols, and it can export ISO drawings and PDFs. Competitors each ship one app per algorithm.
- Designed for the job site: fully offline (usable in a tank bottom, a trench, or a ship's hold), buttons big enough to tap with gloves on, fractions can be entered as "3 1/2", metric and imperial are both supported, projects are filed by job site, and one message can send an entire job site's files.
- Native language first, then expansion: French first, then 8 languages, including Arabic and Polish, which matches the many North African and Eastern European workers in French and European welding trades. The charted storefronts confirm this: French-speaking sn, tn, dz, mu and ma all made the list.
- Free core plus a Pro subscription, then multi-seat business plans: competitors sell one-time purchases.
Is differentiation why it took off? Partly. It's what keeps users around and drives ratings (4.9, where reviews keep saying "j'ai essayé toutes les applications de tuyauterie… de loin la meilleure", I've tried every plumbing app, this is by far the best). But what really got the numbers moving is distribution: the same product sat listed for two and a half months at only a dozen or so installs a day; from 10-30 the founder posted 2 TikToks a day, Android jumped 1,246 in a single day after 11-04, and iOS reached the top 20 in France's Utilities chart. Trade workers rarely search "tuyauterie" in the App Store on their own. They find out about it by scrolling TikTok and seeing a peer using it on a job site.
3. How many people know it
- Nobody knows about it yet: no press, no X discussion, no TrustMRR listing, no influencer shares. The only reach is the founder's TikTok with 7.5k followers and word of mouth in French welding circles. Revenue is not public; the site only lists pricing and self-reported users.
- Copycats: none spotted yet. XPipe Pro (2026-08-30), FitterMaster (08-01) and PipeBook (08-06) are independent competitors that appeared around the same time, not copies of it.
4. What others can borrow
- Find a trade where people do calculations on paper every day, and where you or a cofounder work in it, then bundle the formulas into an offline-first, mostly free tool app. Electricians, HVAC, carpenters, rebar workers, roofers and plumbers (plomberie) all fit. Start with non-English native markets.
- The founder films real job-site content, 2 short videos a day: zero ad spend, 5 days and 440k views, and a niche trade tool climbs to 20 on a national category chart. It only works if the content is genuine and the audience is already on TikTok (French blue-collar workers, vocational students).
- Build reputation first, charge later: stay free until you reach 4.9 stars and a core of loyal users, then move advanced tools into a subscription in version 1.0. Post videos early to build awareness, keep the everyday tools free, and minimize bad reviews. Multi-seat business plans are the second revenue stream.
5. Still unclear
- Revenue and conversion are completely unknown. "11k MAU" is self-reported and conflicts with "7000 downloads".
- The 11-04 Play install jump is an average from weekly snapshots, so the exact day and number are imprecise.
- I did not watch the videos, so I don't know what they actually show (for example, whether they demo a specific calculation). Only the captions were checked.
- Not verified whether they run Meta ads (our ad library only tracks products on our list).
- The free utilities chart in France has a low bar (+6 ratings in a day can reach #20), so the ranking may look stronger than it is. Whether the interest outlasts this TikTok wave still needs watching.
