A book cover on the outer screen of a foldable iPhone: how a reading app rode the iPhone Duo
What it is An iOS reading app: reads EPUB/PDF, tracks paper books, blocks other apps while you read, and lets you ask questions about the book you're reading, with answers that quote the text and avoid spoilers.
Why it took off It shipped ahead of Apple's foldable iPhone Duo and used the camera API to show the cover of the book you're reading on the outer screen. It's instantly legible from a photo, and it tied into the "performative reading" meme. After the Duo went on sale, bloggers and review articles promoted it for free.
CHow to play it: Stop building another focused-reading app. Borrow its playbook for your own category: ship the moment a new hardware or interface launches, build a feature that's instantly clear in a single demo, and win free exposure from reviewers and creators. Duo's outer screen may still be open in fitness, recipes, and translation.

Actually Read is a focused-reading app that launched in September. The same niche has a dozen similar products, most with only single-digit ratings. What pulled it out was a half-joking feature: when you read on the foldable iPhone Duo, the outer screen shows the book's cover, so from the outside the phone looks like an open book. The Duo went on sale in Oct 23, and this was one of the first apps creators and review articles used to demo what the outer screen can do. The pool is still small, though. What's worth learning is the playbook of riding new hardware. The product itself isn't worth copying.
A "book" on the subway
On the day the iPhone Duo went on sale in Oct 23, reading creator papernroses (410k followers) on TikTok posted a video captioned with one line: "well I had to try it lol, app is Actually Read!" In the shot she holds the Duo half-folded, with a full book cover facing outward. By Nov 6 the video had 136k views and 6,600 likes.
Six days later, tech blogger @jonathanjacobs_ posted "Performative reading mode on the iPhone Duo 😅" on Threads, which got 750k views and 32k likes. The developer replied: "Thank you for featuring my app!" In the UK's Independent review of the Duo, the author also wrote about reading on the subway with this mode on.
The feature is called Performative Mode, and the name is deliberate: there's a meme in English-speaking internet culture called "performative reading," which refers to reading in public to look the part. The developer's changelog says "Performative Mode with matcha optional :)", and matcha lattes are a standard prop in the meme too.
What it is
An iOS reading app, free to download, with an in-app purchase, Actually Read Plus, priced at $3.99 and $9.99 (App Store; I didn't check which billing period each corresponds to). It has four main features:
- Reader: imports EPUB and PDF, includes public-domain books, with highlights, bookmarks, and search;
- Reading log: tracks both e-books and paper books, and counts focus time;
- Blocking: starts a reading session and uses Apple's Screen Time to lock the apps and websites you choose;
- Ask the book: asks questions about the book you're reading; answers quote passages from the text, and you can tap to jump back to them. You can also limit answers to the parts you've already read to avoid spoilers. Indexing and search happen on-device. On Apple Intelligence-enabled devices, answers come from the on-device model for free, and only if you choose "Advanced AI" are questions and relevant excerpts sent to the cloud.
The developer, Prism32 LLC, is a small company registered 2023 years ago in Sacramento, California. Its other app is HookBook, a fertility-tracking app. Updates ship often, and by Nov 4 it had reached version 1.5.1.
Why it's trending now
Showed up early. Apple announced the Duo in Sep 9, and the app shipped in Sep 2 with the changelog line "Get ready for iPhone Duo." Almost every update since has focused on the Duo experience: Performative Mode, and "Improve iPhone Duo experience" has been revised several times.
A feature you get the moment you see it. The outer screen shows a book cover. No explanation needed, a three-second video makes the point, and it plugs straight into an existing meme. In the weeks after the Duo launched, tech and book creators were all looking for a clear example of what a foldable's two screens are good for, and this was it.
A clever workaround nobody else thought of. Normal apps can't show different content on the inner and outer screens of the Duo. Apple opened a camera accessory API, CameraCaptureAccessory, meant for things like showing a teleprompter to the person being filmed, as long as the app has a camera session running. Actually Read opened a tiny camera preview and used that opening to push the book cover to the outer screen (reported by Hong Kong's unwire.hk 10-25, paraphrasing the developer's post on r/iPhoneFold). The cost is that it needs camera permission and may drain more battery.
The inflection point shows in the numbers. Across all App Store regions, ratings totaled 46 in the first 8 weeks after launch; from Oct 28 to Nov 6, that rose by 41 over 9 days, to 87, roughly doubling the pace. The US store has 61 ratings at 4.9 stars. The Books free chart bounced between #107 and #145, with its best finish at #78 on Nov 1.
Where users come from
Nearly all of it is free exposure:
- Book and tech creators' trial videos. Besides papernroses, jackiesbooktally (62k followers) posted a "reading apps on the Duo" roundup in Oct 27 that got 141k views, along with a string of smaller accounts trying it out on their own. None of these videos are labeled as ads, so whether anyone was paid is unclear. The tone is consistent, too: "I came down to the outer screen specially to try this." One creator, anapearson_, put it bluntly: "I already have a Kindle and love paper books, I don't think I'll use it forever, but it's really cute."
- A seemingly official TikTok account. bing6j has just over 800 followers. Since Sep 10 it has kept posting #ActuallyRead, promoting only this app, with its top video at 37k views (likely run by the team itself; not verified).
- The developer posted on Reddit themselves, explaining how Performative Mode works, and tech outlets like unwire then rewrote it.
- Localized storefront. The listing is in 9 languages, with titles adapted by region; for example, the Traditional Chinese store calls it "Actually Read:專注閱讀". So it has appeared on the Books charts in 46 countries, but outside the US, ratings in each region are mostly 0 to 1. Rankings like #12 on Ghana's Books Top Grossing or #20 in Oman come from a few in-app purchases and don't say anything about revenue.
We found no discussion on Product Hunt, Hacker News, or X, and no evidence of paid ads.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale (App Store ratings) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Opal | 91k | General-purpose blocker tools, no reader |
| Goodreads / StoryGraph / Fable | 760k / 3.6k / 83k | Tracking and social only; you can't read inside it, and it doesn't block |
| Kindle's Ask this book | Kindle 5.88M | Amazon's in-book AI Q&A, only for Kindle books, launched October |
| Readwise Books | Listed 163,10-20 | A new reading app with inflow from existing Readwise users; its rating growth over the last 7 days is 5 times that of the next app |
| ReadBlock / Read to Unlock / RISE, etc. | Mostly single-digit ratings | A penalty mechanic: you unlock your phone only after reading enough |
| Duodecimo / Book Garden Duo | Duodecimo: 5 ratings | A public-domain book reader built specifically for the Duo |
Among the dozen or so new "focus reading" apps, it's already near the top, but it's still several orders of magnitude behind Opal and Goodreads. Copycats have already appeared: a duo-reading-app repo created on GitHub in Nov 5 has a PR that says outright, "This is how Actually Read's Performative Mode does it," copying the outer-screen cover. Duodecimo listed in Oct 22 and is also going after the "reading on the Duo" spot.
How long this heat lasts
Not for long. The Duo sells for $1,999, supply is limited, and few people see a book cover on the outer screen to begin with. The trick is already public, and any reading app could copy it. Between Nov 5 and 6, US ratings didn't rise at all. If Apple ever opens a proper outer-screen API, this workaround stops being special. How many users it keeps depends on how good the reader and book Q&A are. Rating 4.9; one user wrote, "I really hope it stays just like this," but the volume is too small to judge retention.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't copy the product, but do study the playbook. The focus-reading category is crowded, and everyone is stuck in single-digit ratings. What pushed this one up was a hardware launch. That window is now taken by it and a few copycats, and the Duo's user base is small.
Who it suits: indie iOS developers who move fast and watch Apple's new hardware and new APIs closely, and people who already have a decent app that lacks visibility.
Who it doesn't suit: people hoping to grow with "yet another focus-reading app"; and anyone wanting to compete head-on with it on the Duo outer-screen book cover. You're too late.
How to do it: apply this playbook to your own category. The Duo's outer screen is still empty in other contexts, such as workout timers, recipes, sheet music, or translated subtitles for the person across from you. Look for a use where "something on the outer screen that's instantly clear on camera" works (inferred; we didn't check whether anyone is doing these). The longer-term move is to watch for the next launch: list within a week of a new device or system API coming out, make the update notes clearly say it was built for that, and give the feature a name that connects to an internet meme. For AI features, copy its cost structure: local retrieval plus an on-device model for the free tier, with the cloud large model behind a subscription.
How to get users: during the launch and the weeks after, tech and niche creators look for demo material for new devices. Make your feature something they can film, and get it in front of them on launch day. Start a short-video account that only posts this one trick. Post on new-device communities like r/iPhoneFold and explain how you built it; tech outlets will pick it up.
When to move: for this Duo wave, aim to be in before the year-end shopping season ends. After the holidays, reviews of the new devices and "fun foldable apps" content dries up a lot. For the next hardware or API launch, the window is the week before and after.
Signs you've misjudged it: ① after the Duo buzz fades, its daily rating gains still hold at three to five or more, showing the reader itself retains users and brings in new ones, in which case this product might be worth a serious look; ② Apple opens a proper outer-screen API in a future iOS, so the "camera API workaround" stops being a barrier and the first-mover advantage shrinks faster than it does now; ③ a big account with an existing user base, like Readwise's Books, adds outer-screen book covers, showing this spot has been taken by a large company.

Actually Read: Focus Reader (ios_6796197302) research report
Made by Prism32 LLC (a small company registered in Sacramento, California, 2023-10-26 whose other app is HookBook, a sexual health tracker). 2026-09-02 is live, free to download, with in-app purchases: Actually Read Plus $3.99 / $9.99. Today: 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
Its feature mix (reader + paper-book tracking + Screen Time blocking + RAG Q&A that cites the original text) counts as "complete" in an already crowded category. What actually pushed it up is the launch of Apple's first foldable iPhone, the Duo. It listed a week before the Duo release, and in mid-October added "Performative Mode": using the camera API to project the cover of the book you're reading onto the outer screen, so the phone looks like an open book. 10-23 the Duo went on sale, and BookTok creators, tech bloggers on Threads, The Independent's Duo review, and Hong Kong's unwire all showcased it as a "fun app for the Duo" in quick succession. Absolute scale is still small, though: 87 ratings globally, 60 in the US.
1. Data (appstore library, 2026-10-28 to 11-06)
- Combined ratings across all regions: 10-28 46 → 11-06 over 87,9 days, +41; in the last 7 days, +30. It took 8 weeks after listing to reach 46 ratings, and the pace roughly doubled after the Duo went on sale.
- US: 36 → 60 (iTunes lookup 11-06 shows 61 ratings, average 4.9); US Books free chart #107–#145, best finish #78 on 11-01; the App Store page shows #113 on the Books free chart.
- Ratings in other regions are single-digit (UK 5, Australia / Mexico / Indonesia 3 each). Ghana's Books Top Grossing #12, Oman #20, and Kuwait #27 are all very small markets with low barriers, where a few in-app purchases can get you on the chart. They can't be used to show revenue scale.
- Updates are very frequent: 1.5.1 (11-04). The update history has a string of changes for the iPhone Duo: "Get ready for iPhone Duo" → "Performative Mode with matcha optional :)" → several "Improve iPhone Duo experience". There's also 3D page turns and Siri / Shortcuts.
- Store languages: English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch. The developer shipped localized titles per store (appstore library shows "Actually Read:專注閱讀", "독서에 집중" etc.).
2. Competitors
The niche is crowded. FirstPage 2026-10-15's comparison piece says flatly: "Almost all of these apps launched in the past year, with only a handful of ratings each" (tryfirstpage.app).
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (appstore library / web) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opal | iOS | 2020-10 | 91k ratings, 7 days +443 | A general-purpose blocker with no reader; Actually Read ties blocking to "reading hours". |

| Goodreads / StoryGraph / Bookly / Fable | iOS | 2010–2021 | 760k / 3.6 thousand / 63k / 83k ratings | Tracking or social only, no reader, and no blocking |
| Kindle(Ask this book) | Big-company features | 2026-10 on the Kindle reader (Good e-Reader) | Kindle iOS 5.88M ratings | The big players already have in-book AI Q&A, but only for Kindle books. Actually Read covers your own imported EPUB/PDF and public-domain books, search runs locally, and it has spoiler protection. |
| Readwise Books | iOS | 2026-10-20 | 163 ratings, +162 in 7 days | A newly launched reading app growing 5× faster, with older Readwise users it can pull from |
| ReadBlock / Read to Unlock / RISE / ReadLock / Marca / CurioLock / Another Page | iOS (Another Page on both platforms) | Mostly 2026 | Read to Unlock has 9 ratings, RISE 3, the rest single digits | The "read enough to unlock" mechanic. Actually Read starts a focus session and blocks directly, with no unlock gate. |
| Offshelf / Sift / Avid / Libri | iOS | 2025-10 to 2026-06 | All under 7 ratings | Same focus-reading or AI reading-companion idea, but much smaller |
| Book Garden Duo / Duodecimo | iOS (Duo only) | Duodecimo 2026-10-22 | Duodecimo: 5 ratings | A public-domain reader for Duo, with no blocking and no AI |
| FirstPage / PageToll / One More Page | Android | 2026 | — | Android version only |
| Seven Reads, StoryCodex, book.ai and others | Web / open source | 2026 | — | Spoiler-safe AI reading companions, as web apps or open-source projects |
Takeaway: among this batch of new "focus reading / read-to-unlock" apps, its rating count (60) is already in the lead, and most others sit in single digits. But it is still orders of magnitude behind older players like Opal and Goodreads.
3. Growth levers and evidence
- iPhone Duo platform event + Performative Mode (main driver, confirmed)
- Apple announced Duo on 2026-09-09, opened pre-orders on 10-16, and it went on sale on 10-23 (MacRumors, Reuters). The app was listed on 09-02, a week before the announcement, and its update log includes "Get ready for iPhone Duo".
- An indie dev posted about Performative Mode on r/iPhoneFold (post: /r/iPhoneFold/comments/1xd4gib/, which we couldn't open here, so the details are from unwire's summary). It works by repurposing
CameraCaptureAccessory, an iOS 27.1 API meant for camera accessories: opening a camera session makes the cover screen show a book's cover (unwire.hk 2026-10-25). - Organic exposure: @jonathanjacobs_ on Threads posted "Performative reading mode on the iPhone Duo 😅", which got 751k views and 32k likes, and the developer replied "Thank you for featuring my app!" (Threads). The Independent's Duo review specifically describes using its Performative Mode on the subway (Independent). 10-29
- It hit an existing meme: "performative reading / performative male" (reading a book for show in public).
- TikTok BookTok creators (content confirmed; whether paid was not confirmed) (TikHub search, 11-06)
- papernroses (410k followers) 10-23: "well I had to try it lol, app is Actually Read!", 136k plays / 6,603 likes
- jackiesbooktally (62k followers) 10-27: a roundup of Duo reading apps, 141k plays
- techknowbiz (133k followers) 10-25,6.5 thousand plays; life.with.ladz and anapearson_ 10-25 to 10-30, unprompted trials
- None are labeled as ads (is_ads=false, branded_content=0). The tone is "I downloaded this specifically to try on the Duo's outer screen", which reads more like organic content prompted by the Duo launch.
- Official-looking TikTok account (likely official, not verified): bing6j (847 followers) has posted #ActuallyRead continuously since 09-10, with a top video of 37k plays (10-31 ACOTAR) and 25k 10-27. Few followers, yet it keeps posting and only promotes this one app, which looks like the team making its own content.
- Store localization: 9 languages and localized titles per store, so it appears on the Books charts of 46 countries, but most stores have only 0–1 ratings. The volume still comes mostly from the US.
- Not found: Product Hunt, HN, and X (nothing in the x-radar corpus). No paid ads found (ad libraries only track products on the list, so a miss doesn't prove no spend). The #useactuallyread tag mentioned during recall returns nothing on TikHub search and is unverified.
4. Why it charted
- Timed the platform event well: listed and adapted before Duo, creator videos appeared the day Duo went on sale (10-23), and rating growth doubled in the same period (10-28 8 weeks before → 46 in the 9 days after, +41).
- A feature that is easy to shoot and share: the outer screen shows the book cover, which is instantly understandable and plugs into the "performative reading" meme. It was one of the few early Duo apps that showed off the foldable's two-screen use, and tech media and creators cited it when covering Duo.
- A small technical trick: using CameraCaptureAccessory to drive the outer screen was something others hadn't thought of. Because of that barrier, it had nearly this use case to itself for a while early on Duo.
- A complete product underneath that keeps people: a reader, paper-book tracking, blocking, and on-device RAG Q&A (with citations, spoiler protection, and Apple Intelligence on-device answers), rated 4.9. People who download out of curiosity stay for the reader itself (a review: "I genuinely hope this app stays as is").
- Controlled costs: indexing and retrieval run locally, the on-device model answers for free, and only Advanced AI goes to the cloud behind a subscription, so free users cost almost nothing to serve.
5. Differentiation
- Compared with blockers (Opal, one sec): it ties blocking to actually starting to read this book.
- Compared with read-to-unlock apps (ReadBlock, Read to Unlock): it doesn't rely on penalties or unlock gates, it relies on a good reader plus AI Q&A.
- Compared with Kindle's Ask this book and AI reading companions: it works with any EPUB/PDF, with local retrieval, quoted source text, and spoiler protection.
- What actually made it take off is the differentiator of Performative Mode / Duo support, not the feature mix above. The feature mix is the retention base, not the growth cause: a dozen apps with the same positioning are still in single-digit ratings.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: it is being talked about within a small circle. Media coverage all frames it as a "fun Duo app" (The Independent, unwire.hk, Threads with 750k views). Nobody has reported its revenue, there is no TrustMRR entry or founder sharing income, and it does not show up in X corpus searches.
- Copycats have already appeared. The GitHub repo FrTime/duo-reading-app (created 2026-11-05) PR #78 states "which is how Actually Read ships its 'Performative Mode'", copying the Duo outer-screen cover display; Duodecimo (10-22) and Book Garden Duo are also competing for the Duo reading slot.
7. What to borrow
- When new hardware or a new system API launches, ship a dedicated feature early that is instantly understandable and photogenic, and you can ride the free exposure media and creators give new devices.
- Look through the APIs Apple opens for specific use cases (here, the camera accessory API), and repurpose them for something else to create a short-lived exclusive play.
- Use local RAG with an on-device model for the free tier and a cloud model behind a subscription, which keeps AI costs manageable.
8. Still unclear
- Whether bing6j is an official account; whether the creators were paid (none were labeled as ads).
- What the Plus $3.99 / $9.99 prices correspond to in terms of billing period, and the conversion rate; the actual revenue behind the Top Grossing placement in small countries.
- Whether growth holds up after the Duo buzz fades: Duo is priced at $1,999 with limited supply, so the user pool is capped; from 11-05 to 11-06, US ratings rose by +0.
- The engagement on the original r/iPhoneFold post (Reddit blocked scraping).
