A ¥3 Galgame player: VNPlayer squeezes into the top 10 of paid utilities on price, not product
What it is A local visual novel player for iPhone. You import a compressed PC Galgame archive and play it. In the China store it sells as a ¥3 one-time purchase.
Why it took off Playing Galgames on iPhone without sideloading has long been in demand. Previously the only option was an older ¥58 app. VNPlayer is priced at ¥3, enters the top 10 of a low-barrier paid utilities chart, and catches traffic through store search and the "customers also bought" section on similar app pages.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another multi-engine player. Either fill the gaps the existing few haven't covered (older devices, foldable adaptation, import success rate), or apply the "cheap one-time purchase that siphons traffic from paid utility charts" playbook to another category.

An individual developer put a player on the China App Store that lets you play PC Galgames directly on iPhone, priced at ¥3. It spent over two weeks in the top 10 of paid utilities. But it has only 15 ratings in total, and the category's real winner is a free competitor. It's worth watching because of a cheap chart-climbing tactic, but as a product it's not worth copying.
"Finally no need to go through the signing hassle"
Oct 2026, 13: on the App Store China store, a 5-star review appeared under VNPlayer, titled "Worth downloading": "Most games run, pretty good, and no more hassle with signing and all that, very convenient." Five days later, another one: "Very decent, way better than that r-something app."
These two lines capture the demand. People who wanted to play PC visual novels on iPhone had two options: buy the 58-year-old XP2016Player for ¥3, or sideload with tools like AltStore and re-sign every 7 days. VNPlayer installs straight from the App Store for ¥3.
Problems showed up at the same time. In Oct 20 someone wrote "it crashes", in Oct 22 "crashes", in Oct 24 "keeps crashing", and in Nov 3 "iOS 15 crashes, can't get in at all". The same day another said "please add support for duo fast, all three directions have big black borders, can't play anything". By Nov 6 its average rating was 3.9.
What it is
A local visual novel player. The store subtitle reads "One app for KrKr/ONS/Ren'py playback": it bundles runtimes for three engines, KiriKiri, ONScripter and Ren'Py, and Oct 26's 1.0.1 adds TyranoScript, Artemis and RPG Maker MV/MZ. Users pick a ZIP, 7z or RAR archive from Files, and the app unpacks it on the phone, detects which engine it is, and runs it. LAN file transfer is supported too. The store description deliberately says: "No third-party games bundled, no game downloads. Only import works you have the legal right to use."
The developer is "艺锋 甘", listed in 2026 Sep 30. The same developer account also released "叽哩-KR视觉小说工具" first, in Sep 12. It only supports KiriKiri, offers a free trial and a one-time Pro purchase. VNPlayer came out 18 days later as a multi-engine, paid one-time-purchase version. Looks like one person testing two ways of making money (inference).
How it charted: three price tests
Price was the key. According to price-change records from the third-party app tracker AppInsider: at launch it was ¥3; in Oct 25 it rose to ¥8, dropped to ¥6 the next day, went back to ¥27 in Oct 3, and has stayed there since. Two price rises were reversed within two days, which suggests volume dropped sharply after the increase (inferred).
Rankings followed the price: in Oct 14 it first appeared in the China store's paid overall chart at #159; in Oct 20 it reached the top 100; in Oct 21 it made the top 10 of paid utilities; in Oct 23 it peaked at #28 on the paid overall chart. Afterward it hovered around the 100th spot on the paid overall chart and between #5 and #8 on paid utilities. In Nov 6, on China's paid utilities chart it ranked #6, next to ¥48 Spark (Ren'Py only, #7) and ¥58 XP3Player (#14).
The China paid utilities chart has a low bar: a few dozen purchases a day can get you into the top 10. The chart itself is the funnel: on the same list, a ¥58 app and a ¥3 app do roughly the same thing, and users don't have to think much about which to tap.
Where users come from
- Store search. The subtitle stacks engine names: searching krkr, XP3, ONScripter, Ren'Py or 视觉小说 in the China store all surface it (iTunes search, 11-06). Bilibili and Zhihu have had "how to play Galgame on iPhone" tutorials for years, so people are searching for this.
- Top Paid exposure. The slot it got by paying ¥3, as above.
- "Customers also bought". 咔咔喵, Galplay, 叽哩, Aether and XP3Player all have it in the "you may also like" section under their store pages. The leader 咔咔喵 adds several 80 ratings a week, and traffic leaks out through that link.
- Creators and influencers: none found. No Bilibili videos about it turned up, and there are no forum threads about it. The category is hot on Bilibili, with plenty of "Apple Galgame demo + hundreds of resource shares" traffic accounts, but I didn't see anyone name VNPlayer.
Where the money comes from
¥3 one-time purchase, no in-app purchases. After Apple's cut, each sale nets under ¥2.5. Going by its position around #100 on the Top Paid chart, that's probably dozens to a hundred or two sales a day, or a few hundred yuan a day (my estimate, can't verify). The rating count supports a very small volume: 28 ratings in Oct, 6 in Nov (10 and 15 respectively), all from the China store. It also charted on the paid utilities chart in the Japan and Hong Kong stores, but priced at ¥600 and HK$32, and has zero ratings there.
Who it's competing with: earlier, more complete, and free
From 2026 8 to October, a batch of similar apps suddenly showed up on the App Store, which suggests Apple was approving this kind of "local game player" during that stretch (inference). VNPlayer rode that wave; it didn't start it.
| App | Launched | China store ratings (11-06) | Pricing | vs. VNPlayer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kakameow - visual novel tool | 2026-08-14 | 318,4.8 ratings | Free | Category leader with more engines (also supports BGI, CatSystem, YU-RIS). A Bilibili "best Apple Gal emulator" recommendation video has 17k views. |
| Galplay: multi-engine Galgame player | 2026-08-21 | 22,4.8 ratings | Free | Broadest engine coverage, connects directly to Baidu Netdisk and WebDAV, supports encrypted split archives. Latest version is 1.108.2. |
| Aether - All-in-One Player | 2026-08-26 | 7 | Free + ¥48 in-app purchase | Video player with a Gal emulator. The author posts long updates in Galgame forums and has a user group. |
| XP3Player | 2016-03-20 | 742,3.0 ratings | ¥58 | Veteran, only does KiriKiri. Most of the traffic VNPlayer captured comes from this one. |
| Spark / iONSPlayer / RenpyReader etc. | 2023–2026 | A few to 280 ratings each | ¥8–48 | Only one engine |
| Kirikiroid2, Tyranor, JoiPlay | Years ago | — | Android | The Android standard. Just install the APK. |
VNPlayer doesn't lead on features, and stability is still its weak spot. Its only real difference: it's the only multi-engine player on the App Store that's a ¥3 one-time purchase. Free apps compete on the Top Free chart, so on the Top Paid chart it's mostly up against itself and a few ¥18 to ¥58 single-engine tools. The price got it on the chart, but its user base is far smaller than 咔咔喵's.
The move worth copying
- Find small categories where old paid tools sell at a premium and demand is clear, then use a very low one-time price to take their traffic. The bar for the China paid utilities chart is low, and ¥3 can buy a long-lasting chart position.
- Write the subtitle in the format users actually search for, with the engine names, not a slogan.
- Test two monetization models on one account: one free with a Pro upgrade, one paid as a one-time purchase.
The risks are clear too. Most of the games users import come from resource sites, so the copyright is grey and whole batches could be pulled at any time. Compatibility is the entire product, and if crashes pile up, the ratings drop.
If it were you
Bottom line: This is a small, already crowded category with a low ceiling. Following VNPlayer itself isn't worth it. What's worth taking away is the "low-price one-time purchase to chase the paid utilities chart" move, applied to a different category.
Who it suits: People who already know the runtimes like KiriKiri, ONScripter and Ren'Py, and can make compatibility better than 咔咔喵 and Galplay do. Or people with another "old tool that sells for ¥30+, with steady demand" who want to try the paid chart.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone expecting it to earn real money (a few hundred yuan a day is already a top-end estimate), anyone unwilling to work in a copyright grey area, and anyone without a range of devices to test compatibility on.
How to do it: If you still want to build a player, don't make another multi-engine player. Do what the earlier ones didn't: support older devices (iOS 15, 16), foldables and iPad layouts, improve import success rates, and tell users why something failed. If you're borrowing the tactic, first find an old paid tool in the category priced at ¥30+ with lots of ratings but a low average score, then make a one-time-purchase version with matching features priced at ¥3 to ¥6.
How to get users: Store search plus the Top Paid chart is the main channel, so pack the subtitle with keywords. Then post a working gameplay demo on Bilibili and in Galgame forums. VNPlayer itself never did this.
Before when: This wave of similar apps got through review concentrated between 2026 and 8 and October. The window depends on Apple's review standards, which can shut at any time. If you're going to build, the sooner the better. If you see no traction within two to three months, stop.
Signs this read is wrong: If VNPlayer's ratings growth picks up noticeably at ¥3 (say, more than 20 a week), or if media or big Bilibili accounts start naming it, then paying for placement works better than it looks. Or, if half a year from now these similar apps are still listed, review hasn't tightened, and a competitor with better compatibility is running as a paid app, then this category's ceiling is higher than estimated here.

VNPlayer - 视觉小说模拟器 (ios_6796376003) research report
Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our appstore database (app_day / review / app_snapshot, from 2026-10-28), Apple's lookup API (cn store, 11-06), AppInsider's event timeline, StoreIntel, Bilibili, kungal forums, Zhihu, CSDN. Storefronts checked: the database was scanned across all stores; this app only appeared on the paid utilities charts in the cn, jp and hk stores, and only cn has ratings.
One line
It's a local Galgame / visual novel player for iOS with three built-in engines: KiriKiri, ONScripter and Ren'Py (1.0.1 added TyranoScript, Artemis and RPG Maker MV/MZ). The developer is an individual, 艺锋 甘, listed since 2026-09-30. It got onto the chart by pushing the price down to ¥3 in the China store. The bar for the China paid utilities chart is very low. A ¥3 one-time purchase plus the selling point of "installs from the App Store, no self-signing" is enough to chart, with users mostly coming from store search. The scale is very small: 15 ratings in total, about 4 a week, so it hasn't "broken out". The real breakout in this category is the free 咔咔喵, with 318 ratings.
1. What the data actually shows
- Charts (appstore library app_day, cn): from 10-28 to 11-06, the Top Paid overall chart stayed between #93 and #155, and the Top Paid utilities chart between #5 and #8. 11-06 peaked at #94 overall and #5 in utilities.
- All-time peaks (AppInsider timeline): 10-14 was first spotted when it hit #159 on the Top Paid overall chart. 10-20 charted on Top Paid overall 100 later, the same day it charted on the Japan Top Paid utilities chart. 10-21 reached the China Top Paid utilities chart 10 later. 10-23's best Top Paid overall finish was #28. StoreIntel recorded its best utilities finish over 90 days as #2.
- Ratings: 10-28 has 10, 11-06 has 15, all from cn (library app_day). AppInsider's four-week average is 4 new ratings per week. jp and hk have chart positions, but their ratings are 0.
- Pricing was tested in the wild (AppInsider): ¥3 at launch; 10-25 it rose to ¥8; 10-26 it dropped to ¥6 (announced the same day as 1.0.1); 10-27 it went back down to ¥3, and has stayed at ¥3 since (app_snapshot shows ¥3.0 from 10-28 to 11-06). Other storefronts use the higher tier: HK$32 in hk, ¥600 in jp. The recall card's "around ¥22" is wrong; the China store price is actually ¥3. No in-app purchases (StoreIntel).
- Money: at ¥3 a copy, with volume in the range of the China Top Paid overall chart's #100-ish slot, the best days are tens to maybe a hundred-plus copies, so a few hundred yuan a day. This is an inference, not verified.
2. Competitors: the same thing, and within 2026 years 8 to October a whole batch appeared
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale (cn rating count, 11-06 lookup) | How it differs from VNPlayer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 咔咔喵 - Visual novel tool (id6796972501, Pei Yang) | iOS | 2026-08-14 | 318, rated 4.9; AppInsider puts new ratings at about 88 per week; at one point reached #71 on the China free utilities chart | Free, more engines (the Bilibili titles list kr/ons/ar(ty)/renpy/BGI/CS/YU-RIS); a Bilibili video, "The best gal emulator on Apple, 咔咔喵", has 17k views (2026-10-04). The real leader in this category is this one |
| Galplay: multi-engine Galgame player (id6799973308, Zhaoyu ZHONG) | iOS | 2026-08-21 | Rated 22,4.8; now at version 1.108.2, updating often | Free; most engines (Ren'Py built in with 17 runtimes, plus Kirikiri, ONS, RPG Maker, Tyrano, CatSystem2, Artemis, Siglus); can pull games straight from Baidu Netdisk / WebDAV, supports split archives and encrypted zips; iOS 17 or later only |
| Jili - KR visual novel tool (id6809454941) | iOS | 2026-09-12 | 9 | Another app from the same developer, "Yifeng Gan" (library app table shows developer_id 6795982153 for both); KiriKiri only; free trial (10GB, can hold 1 games), with a one-time Pro unlock. VNPlayer is the paid multi-engine version that went live 18 days later |
| Aether - All-in-One Player (id6796580469, Yu Liu) | iOS / cross-platform | 2026-08-26 | 7 | Free, with ¥48 in-app purchase; a video player with a Gal emulator built in; kept a long thread on the kungal forum posting updates (topic/3972, from August to November), and has a user base |
| XP3Player (id1064060287, Dan Zhang) | iOS | 2016-03-20 | 742 | Veteran KiriKiri player, ¥58; in the library, its cn paid utilities ranking stayed between #8 and #16, same chart as VNPlayer. Zhihu tutorials from 2025 years ago still recommend it |
| XP3 Player (id6802406705, Xu Liu) | iOS | 2026-08-27 | 0 | ¥58; looks like it's riding the name of the veteran app and hasn't picked up traction |
| XP3PlayerGo (¥22) / ONS file manager (¥18, Xiaoyan Chen) | iOS | 2026-03 / 2026-06 | 3 / 3 | Paid single-engine tools in new shells |
| iONSPlayer(Ludan Cui) | iOS | 2026-03-31 | 10 | ONS only; price bounces between ¥6, ¥28 and ¥8 (app_day); cn paid utilities chart between #23 and #89 |
| RenPlay (free) / RenpyReader (¥18) / RenPyEmu (¥38) / Spark - Ren'Py novels (¥48,280 rating count) | iOS | 2023 to 2026 | Small | Ren'Py only |
| ZScripter | iOS | 2026 | Not verified | Free VN players |
| Kirikiroid2, Tyranor, JoiPlay, ONScripter Plus | Android | Many years ago | The Android de facto standard | On Android you can install any APK; there's no listing gate to clear |
| AltStore / SideStore self-signing | iOS | The old way | Lots of tutorials | Free, but you have to re-sign every 7 days, a high bar; the good reviews of VNPlayer say exactly this: "finally no need to go through the signing hassle" |
Takeaway: lots of competitors, and recent ones too. VNPlayer doesn't lead on features; Galplay and 咔咔喵 have more engines and are free. What sets it apart is that it's paid, and cheap (¥3).
3. Where users come from
- App Store search (likely, indirect evidence): the subtitle reads like a keyword list: "one app for KrKr/ONS/Ren'py playback". Searching cn for krkr, XP3, ONScripter, Ren'Py, visual novel shows it in results (iTunes search, 11-06). The demand is already there: for years, Bilibili and Zhihu "play galgame on iOS" tutorials have been telling people to buy XP3Player on the App Store or sideload it.
- Chart exposure (confirmed on chart): at ¥3, it spent over two weeks at #28 to #155 on the Top Paid overall chart and in the top 10 of paid utilities. The chart itself is the funnel. XP3Player, on the same chart, sells for ¥58, so the cheaper one gets tapped more often.
- Cross-referral via "customers also bought" (confirmed link): VNPlayer appears in the "You might also like" section on the store pages of 咔咔喵, Galplay, Jili, Aether and XP3Player. The leader 咔咔喵 adds 80+ ratings per week, and its traffic spills over through that link.
- Jili from the same developer (inferred): Jili launched first, free, KR engine only; VNPlayer came later, paid, multi-engine. I found no evidence that Jili sends traffic to VNPlayer; unverified.
- Content and creators: none found. Searching Bilibili for "VNPlayer visual novel" returns no relevant videos; X (x-radar corpus) and the kungal forum have no posts about it. Bilibili has plenty of "Apple galgame gameplay demo + 600 resource share" traffic accounts (e.g. BV1sz1uB2E6b, 2026-10-28) that keep creating demand, but none of them name VNPlayer.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence. A one-time ¥3 purchase doesn't support paid acquisition.
4. Why it got traction (for its size)
- The demand is real and has been pent up: on iOS, playing PC galgames without jailbreaking or self-signing is an old need; until now you had to pay ¥58 for XP3Player or sign it yourself. Good reviews, verbatim: "finally no need to go through the signing hassle", "most games play", "better than the one starting with r" (library reviews, cn, 10-13 to 10-18).
- Pricing arbitrage: the bar to enter the China paid utilities chart is low; a few dozen copies a day at ¥3 can put you in the top 10 of utilities. The developer tried ¥8 and ¥6, and within two days it was back at ¥3, which suggests volume fell sharply after the price increase. The chart position was bought with a low price.
- Timing: from 2026 to October 8, at least 咔咔喵, Galplay, Aether, RenPlay, Jili and the new XP3 Player all launched in sequence, which suggests Apple's review has been letting this type of "local player" through for a while. Apple opened up emulator-type apps in 2024. Also, porting open-source krkr2, ONScripter and Ren'Py runtimes with AI assistance is now cheap (this one is an inference). VNPlayer rode this wave; it didn't open it.
- Retention and reputation are a problem: after 1.0.1, negative reviews cluster around crashes (including devices on iOS 15 that won't launch at all, even though its minimum requirement is listed as iOS 15) and foldable screens like the Surface Duo, where "all three directions have huge black bars" (10-20 to 11-03 had 6 reviews, 1 to 3 stars). The current average is 3.9, below 咔咔喵's 4.9 and Galplay's 4.8.
5. Differentiation
- On features: three engines at 1.0.1, later seven; auto-extracts ZIP/7z/RAR on import; LAN file transfer; game library management. Competitors have all of these, and do them more completely. Galplay can also pull straight from Baidu Netdisk, and 咔咔喵 has more engines.
- On business: it's the only multi-engine player that's a one-time ¥3 purchase with no in-app purchases. Others are either free (咔咔喵, Galplay) or single-engine tools at ¥18 to ¥58. That price gives it a spot on the paid chart, while free apps compete on the free chart.
- Is that differentiation why it charted? Yes, but only on the paid utilities chart, not in user scale. User scale sits with the free 咔咔喵.
6. How many people have seen it
- Revenue isn't public; no media, X accounts or Bilibili videos cover it. Only auto-indexing sites like AppInsider and StoreIntel have pages on it.
- The category itself is popular in galgame circles: 咔咔喵's Bilibili video has 17k views, and Aether has a long thread on kungal. VNPlayer itself is barely known.
- Copycats are already many, and most launched earlier or at the same time: 咔咔喵, Galplay, Aether, RenPlay, XP3 Player (Xu Liu), XP3PlayerGo, ONS file manager, RenPyEmu, plus Jili from the same developer.
7. What to borrow
- Look for small niches where "old paid tools sell at a premium, demand is clear, and newcomers can capture the paid chart at a low price": the China paid utilities chart has a low bar, and a one-time ¥3 purchase buys long-term chart placement and exposure.
- The subtitle stacks keywords for engines and formats directly (KrKr/ONS/Ren'py), which feeds store search.
- One developer, two products: a single-engine free app with a Pro in-app purchase (Jili) versus a multi-engine paid one-time purchase (VNPlayer). Test which paid model works better.
- Risks: gray-area copyright (user-imported resources mostly come from resource sites), with delisting risk; compatibility is the entire product, and crashes will wreck ratings directly.
8. Still unclear
- Actual download volume and revenue (no reliable benchmark for converting chart position into unit sales).
- Whether it was promoted on QQ groups, Tieba, Xiaohongshu or Douyin (we can't search those platforms; tools.md only has the TikTok international API).
- Whether Jili and VNPlayer send traffic to each other.
- Same-category apps passing review all at once: is it a shift in Apple's review standards, or a release of some open-source runtime? No clear platform event found.
