# A Norwegian media group paid to push a wishlist app into Sweden's top ten. What an indie developer can take away is the playbook

**What it is** A free wishlist app. Paste any online store link to add an item, share the list with family and friends, and gift-givers tap "reserve" so no one buys a duplicate. It makes money from affiliate commissions and brand advertising.

**Why it took off** Schibsted took a product validated in Norway and launched it in Sweden in September, just before the Christmas season. It went all in at once: paid creators, official TikTok boosting, TV, outdoor ads in Stockholm, and a celebrity campaign. It then grew through a daily draw that promised to "make your whole list come true," riding a market GoWish had already educated.

**C** **How to play it** Don't go head-to-head where GoWish is already established. Teams with local traffic or retail relationships can enter markets without a strong local product, offering a free wishlist that earns affiliate commissions, or go after higher-ticket niches like weddings and baby registries. Borrow GoWish's "win and get the whole list" sweepstakes to drive signups. Target launch by mid-September 2027.

Grade C: its traction came from a media group's budget and channels, which followers can't replicate. The category is led by GoWish, and new apps without budgets got almost no volume in the same season. The lessons worth taking are neighboring-country replication, seasonal timing, tying a draw to activation, and affiliate monetization. Chatter in small circles

Boon is the Swedish version of Schibsted's Norwegian wishlist app Ønsk, renamed and moved to Sweden. It 11-06 reached #6 on the Swedish App Store overall free chart, but it got there through a comedian endorsement, TV ads, a full train wrap in Stockholm, and a daily prize draw, while a category leader, GoWish, sat ahead of it. This piece covers how it was pushed up, where the money comes from, and what someone without a media group behind them can take from it.

### A comedian who wants a gift

In 2026 Oct 30, Boon's official TikTok account @boon.se posted a video captioned "Vad säger ni, borde Edvin få sin önskan uppfylld?" (What do you say, should Edvin get his wish granted?). Edvin Törnblom is a Swedish comedian and podcast host who appeared on Swedish Taskmaster, and had a Stockholm live show in Dec 5. By 11-06, the video had 6.63M views, yet the account had only 5,735 followers (TikTok, 11-06).

This video was part of Boon's "Swedish campaign blitz." Over the following days, the same account posted "Edvin obviously deserves a music video" (11-287k views), "The Boon train takes over Stockholm" (11-03), and a screening of the campaign held at Schibsted's Swedish office (11-05). Earlier, on 10-22, the account had written "Tomorrow is our TV premiere." Boon's Swedish head, Majken Henæs Johansson, said on LinkedIn that she appeared in the campaign herself: "Being Boon's Swedish head is like riding an adventure train at 400 km/h."

A free app that only officially launched in Sweden in September, running creators, TV, outdoor, and celebrity marketing all at once within two months. This isn't something a small team can afford, which is why the focus here is on the approach, not on trying to copy the scale.

### What it is

A wishlist app, completely free, with no in-app purchases. Paste a product link from any online store and it automatically pulls the image and price; in physical stores you can scan a barcode; for something you just want to experience, upload a photo and write a few lines yourself. You can create several lists (Christmas, birthdays, weddings, baby showers) and share them with family and friends. Gift-givers tap "reserve" so others know the item has already been bought and won't duplicate it, and the recipient can't see who bought it. The first line on the store page reads "Allt alla önskar sig, på ett ställe" (Everything everyone wishes for, in one place).

The original Norwegian version, Ønsk, launched in October 2024. Norwegian media NRK 2025-11 reported that its users tripled over a year, and it now has over 500k users (according to a case study by Boitano, the consultancy Schibsted hired to handle international expansion). The first thing they changed for going abroad was the name: a name with "ø" can't be typed, searched, or pronounced outside Norway. They hired A Hundred Monkeys, the naming agency behind OpenAI's Codex and Miro, and landed on "Boon," an English word meaning "blessing, gift" that people in any country can say.

### How big it got

| Metric | Metric | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sweden overall free chart | From 10-28 to 11-06 ranked #6 to #26; 11-05 and 11-06 were #7 and #6 | App Store Sweden chart |
| Lifestyle free chart | Ranks #2 to #4, with GoWish consistently ahead | Same as above |
| Score | 10-28 reached 372 reviews and 11-06 reached 570; daily additions rose from 3 to 37 | App Store Sweden |
| Rating | 4.79 | Apple store API, 11-06 |
| Android | 10,000+ downloads | AppBrain |
| Countries charted | Sweden only | App Store charts by country |

The App Store first-listing date is 8-21, but the real marketing push came in the week of mid-September. Mats Staugaard of Boitano wrote on LinkedIn that Boon hit the top of the charts in Sweden on its first day that week. The August release was probably a soft launch (inferred).

Comparing against the leader shows where it stands: GoWish has 22k ratings in Sweden, and over the same period it held overall free chart ranks #1 to #6, adding 50 to 130 new ratings a day, three to five times Boon's pace. GoWish's August press release said it has 1M registered users in Sweden. Boon didn't open a new category; it's fighting for second place in a market GoWish educated.

### Where users come from

**Creators are pushing it, and the campaign started in September.** Search "boon önskelista" on TikTok and you'll find a wave of videos tagged "I betalt samarbete med @BOON" (paid partnership with Boon): ugc.by.idaa's 9-08 video with 570k views, captioned "Boon finally came to Sweden"; ellen.forsbergg's 9-16 video with 220k; thegirlycode's 10-06 video with 360k; clarakajlov and lovisakarlsson at roughly 10-25 and 2 11-04 each, around 200k. On Instagram there are plenty of reels tagged "Reklam för @boon.se" too, like a mom writing "my kid turns 4 tomorrow" and casually setting up a wishlist for them. September's theme is students and New Year's parties, and from October everything switches to Christmas wishlists.

**The official account's videos show a huge gap between views and followers.** 5,700 followers, with single videos at 7.99M views (10-04), 6.63M (10-30), and 1.72M (9-21), while routine posts from the same period got only a few hundred views. A gap this large almost certainly means paid boosting (inferred).

**TV, outdoor, celebrities.** 10-23 TV premiere, train ads in Stockholm, and Edvin Törnblom's video series (all visible on the official TikTok). Boitano's case page says "all channels rolled out at once, appearing on Stockholm streets right away."

**Giveaways are the move worth watching.** All of October they gave away 10k kronor (about ¥6,700 in RMB), and a commenter said it's "one person a day gets 10k kronor, like giving someone who can't afford Christmas gifts." From 10-31 they switched to a new mechanic: at 12-31, one person is picked each day and "their entire wishlist gets granted" (official TikTok, 10-31.2M views 11:11). 10-18 The official account also posted a video answering "what are the odds of winning, how many tickets do you need", which suggests the odds are tied to what users do in the app (exact rules unverified). The design ties acquisition to activation: to win, you have to build a wishlist first, and once the list exists, it gets shared with family.

**Backed by the group.** The account bio reads "From Schibsted, same as Aftonbladet and Podme." Aftonbladet is Sweden's largest evening paper, and Schibsted also owns SvD and its own ad platform in Sweden. Whether Boon used its parent's ad inventory, and how much, is unverified, but the channel is available to it whenever it wants.

**Seasonality.** From November through Christmas is when wishlist demand peaks all year, and GoWish also climbed to overall chart #1 in the same stretch. The whole category rose, and Boon rode that momentum up.

### What users say

Most visible reviews are five-star comments like "easy to use" and "handy." Two kinds of comments are worth noting:

- Comparisons with the leader: "Very handy, better than GoWish" (10-30); "A bit like GoWish, but really good to use" (10-24); "Better looking than the others" (9-02).

- People came for the draw, and some admit it: one five-star review titled "The reason to download this app is" says "you can enter a contest to win money" (10-27); a one-star review titled "An app that only grew by giving away cash" (10-11). Another questions "both winners' names are anonymized" (10-28).

Complaints cluster in three areas: list creation stalls while loading (10-10, this user came from an Instagram ad), items disappear after being added (10-05, 11-01), and "the app is full of ads" (10-22).

### Where the money comes from

The app takes no money from users. Norwegian trade outlet m24 covered Ønsk under its affiliate marketing section, and Schibsted's ad sites have a page for "advertise on Ønsk." The reasonable reading is two legs: users click through from the list to an online store and purchase, and Boon earns affiliate commissions; brands buy ad placements inside the app (inferred, specific splits aren't public). The Norwegian version is integrated with the price-comparison site Prisjakt, and the Swedish site advertises "cross-store price comparison," but where the Swedish price data comes from is unverified.

This model means it doesn't need to squeeze revenue out of each user right away, so spending heavily on user acquisition makes sense: every list shared during the Christmas season is dozens of chances for a click-through to a store.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale | How Boon differs |
|---|---|---|
| GoWish (called Ønskeskyen in Denmark) | Claims 20M registered users worldwide, 1M in Sweden; Sweden iOS rating 22k, overall Top Free chart #1 to #6 | Category leader, nearly identical features; in Swedish minds, "wishlist" just means GoWish |
| Ønsk | 50+ million users in Norway, 6,500 ratings in the Norway store, overall Top Free chart #3 to #5 | It's Boon's original Norwegian version |
| Vipps MobilePay wishlist | Payment app users across the four Nordic countries | A feature inside a payment app, no separate install, but no content or social |
| Prisjakt wishlist | Sweden's largest price comparison site | Price comparison is the core business, the wishlist is a side feature; they also run a "win your wishlist" giveaway with a 5,000 krona prize |
| Wishlists, Giftful, Listful, Moonsift | Sweden store ratings range from a few dozen to over two hundred | General-purpose English tools, no localization, no marketing spend |
| this year's 9 new launches through October (Wantd, Happy Giftlist, Wishdo, etc.) | Between 0 and 3 ratings | Small Christmas-season apps that never gained traction |

The last row is what this category looks like for someone without a budget: same season, same need, and almost nobody downloads.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : Boon was a planned launch funded by a media group: a product validated in Norway, TV plus outdoor plus celebrities plus influencers, and daily giveaways. That's how it reached the top ten, and it's exactly what followers can't get. Launching another wishlist app in a country where GoWish is already entrenched, without a budget, almost always ends up as the last row of the table.

**Who it suits** : Teams with local traffic or retail relationships, such as price comparison sites, shopping guide sites, affiliate networks, or content accounts with large parent or young women audiences. For them, a wishlist is an entry point that turns existing traffic into commissions. The other group is agencies building white-label wishlists for retailers or media companies. Boon brought in consultants, a naming agency, and a full Swedish team, which shows big companies are willing to pay for this.

**Who it doesn't suit** : Indie developers hoping to win through organic store search and features. There's no feature gap left: link-based price tracking, duplicate-gift prevention, multiple lists, and shared lists are all done by GoWish and Boon, and done well.

**How to do it** : First, search "wishlist" and the local-language equivalent in the country you're targeting, and check whether GoWish or a local media product is in the top three. If so, don't enter. If not, the three things worth copying from Boon are: a name people can pronounce in every country; automatic image and price pulling from pasted links; and free to use, earning through affiliate commissions. To avoid head-on competition, pick a niche it hasn't gone deep on, like weddings or baby registries, where lists involve big one-time purchases, merchant commissions are higher, and users are more likely to share.

**How to acquire users** : Copy the giveaway, not the TV ads. The prize is "we'll fulfill your entire list," and winning odds rise with how many lists you create and share, so users promote the app to family to improve their chances. Giveaways are subject to local regulations, so check them before launch. For the influencer layer, copy the rhythm: push everyday scenarios in September, then switch everything to Christmas from October on.

**Deadline** : This business peaks for one season a year. This year's Christmas is already too late, so the target is mid-September of 2027, no later than early October, before people start thinking about Christmas gifts.

**Signs you've misread it** : ① After the January giveaway and the holidays end, Boon still stays in Sweden's Top Free chart top 50, which means the product retains users on its own, not just because money pushed it up; ② Boon enters a third country and grows without local media resources, which means this playbook is copyable and the barrier is lower than written here; ③ GoWish drops out of Sweden's overall top 20, which means the incumbent is less secure than it looks and the category leader spot is up for grabs.

- **Confirmed** **Store search plus the Christmas season** : In Sweden's store, searching önskelista/wishlist ranks second (behind only GoWish); the category as a whole peaks in the season, and GoWish was #1 overall at the same time

## Why Boon - önskelista & presenter (iOS 6796647852) took off

**In one line** : Boon is the Swedish version of the wishlist app "Ønsk," which Norwegian media group Schibsted (VG Lab) built in Norway and renamed for Sweden. It hit Sweden's overall Top Free chart top 10 through three things: a big company funding marketing (creator partnerships, outdoor ads, TikTok giveaways), the gift-giving season, and GoWish having already taught Swedish users to use wishlist apps. It isn't an indie developer's work, and the product holds nothing exclusive. The barrier to copying it is marketing budget and media resources.

### 1. Basic data

- The developer is Schibsted Media AS, the same group as VG, Aftenposten, and Aftonbladet. The Android package name is no.schibsted.boon, and AppBrain shows 10000+ downloads. App Store launch date 2026-08-21, current version 2.6.0 (2026-11-05), rating 4.79 across 581 ratings (Apple lookup, 2026-11-06).

- The official Swedish push began around **the week of 2026-09-17** : Boitano's Mats Staugaard posted on LinkedIn, "This week Boon launched in Sweden, and on day one it was near the top of the App Store charts." Converting the post ID gives the date 2026-09-17. The August release was likely a soft launch first.

- Our database (appstore, SE store):
    - From 2026-10-28 to 11-06, the Top Free chart sat between #6 and #26, and in the last two days it was #7 and #6; the Lifestyle Top Free chart was #2 to #4.
    - Rating count grew from 372 to 570, with daily gains rising from 3 to 37,7, reaching 175 new ratings in a single day.
    - It charted only in the Sweden store and never reached Top Grossing. The app is free, with no in-app purchases.

- The one it couldn't beat is **GoWish** (Denmark, 22,056 ratings in the Sweden store). In the same period GoWish ranked #1 to #6 on Sweden's overall Top Free chart and #1 in Lifestyle; its daily rating gains were 50 to 130, roughly 3 to 5 times Boon's. Boon ranked #2 in Lifestyle, just behind GoWish.

- Its "big sister" **Ønsk** (id 6698880149) in Norway: in the same period it ranked #3 to #5 on the overall Top Free chart, with 6,521 ratings.

### 2. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Boon differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GoWish (called Ønskeskyen in Denmark) | iOS/Android/web | 2023-04(iOS) | Claims 20M registered users worldwide, with 2026-08 reaching 1M registrations in Sweden; Sweden iOS rating 22k | Category leader; in Sweden, "wishlist = GoWish" for a long time. Boon's features are nearly identical; the differences are local media backing, price comparison, and influencer content. |
| Ønsk(VG Lab) | iOS/Android | 2024-10 | 50 to 60+ million users in Norway; NO store rating 6.5k | Boon itself (the Norwegian version), integrated with Prisjakt |
| Vipps MobilePay wishlist | A feature inside a payment app | 2024-11 | The four Nordic countries | A big-company feature with no separate app install, but only a side feature with no content or community |
| Prisjakt app wishlist | iOS/Android | Already there | Sweden's largest price comparison site | Price comparison first, with the wishlist as a side feature; Prisjakt also runs its own "win your wishlist" giveaway (5000 kronor) |
| Wishlists GmbH, Giftful, Listful, Moonsift, and others | iOS | 2019 to 2024 | Sweden store ratings range from a few dozen to over two hundred | Generic English tools, not localized, no marketing spend |
| 2026 saw a wave of small new apps (Wantd, Happy Giftlist, Wishdo, Önskelista – julklappar…) | iOS | 2026-09 to 10 | Between 0 and 3 ratings | Seasonal copycats, no real volume |

Verdict: this category was already a red ocean, and GoWish is the clear leader. Boon didn't open a new category. It's fighting for second place in a market GoWish had already built.

### 3. Growth tactics (with evidence)

1. **Heavy paid creator partnerships (confirmed)** . Search "boon önskelista" on TikHub and you'll find a lot of videos tagged "I betalt samarbete med @BOON" or "Reklam för @boon.se":
    - ugc.by.idaa, 570k views, 09-08, caption "Äntligen finns nu Boon i Sverige"
    - ellen.forsbergg, 220k, 09-16
    - thegirlycode, 360k, 10-06
    - clarakajlov, 200k, 10-25
    - lovisakarlsson 2.2M, 11-04
    - Instagram also has plenty of reels tagged "Reklam för @boon.se"

The timeline: in September they pushed student and "tjejnyår" (new-year) scenes, then from October shifted to Christmas wish lists.

1. **Official TikTok content plus paid boosting (highly likely)** . @boon.se has only 5,735 followers, yet single posts hit 7.99M (10-04), 6.63M (10-30), 1.72M (09-21), and 910k (10-11). A gap that big between followers and views almost certainly means paid amplification (Spark Ads). This one is inference.

2. **Giveaway (confirmed)** . One person is picked every day 11:11 and gets their wish list "fulfilled in full", running until 12-31 (official TikTok 10-31); there is also a "win 10k kronor" Instagram reel.

3. **Offline outdoor ads (confirmed)** . The Boitano case page says "when we launched in Sweden, we went all in across channels and it showed up on Stockholm streets"; an official video also shows posters in Småland.

4. **Group resources** . The account bio says "from Schibsted, same company as Aftonbladet and Podme." Schibsted owns Aftonbladet, SvD, and Podme in Sweden, so it can secure cheap or even free ad placements. Boon doesn't show up in the Meta Ad Library (our metaads), but that library only tracks a fixed list of advertisers, so absence there doesn't mean no spend.

5. **Store search and season** . Searching "önskelista" or "wishlist" puts Boon second, behind GoWish. November through Christmas is the year's peak for demand, and GoWish itself climbed to overall chart #1 in the same stretch, so the whole category was rising.

6. **Prompting in-app ratings (inferred)** . 4.8 stars, with the developer replying to reviews one by one. Daily rating growth tracks the chart trajectory.

### 4. Why it took off

- **A template that's already been proven** : Ønsk in Norway tripled its users in a year (NRK 2025-11), reaching 2026k by year 600 (m24). Boon is copying that playbook straight into the market most like Norway. Boitano states the reasons for picking Sweden: gift-giving culture close to Norway's, a mature e-commerce scene, and Schibsted's strong local presence.

- **Timing** : launched mid-September, right ahead of the Christmas gift season. Boitano's own words: "the Christmas shopping season set the deadline."

- **Money and channels** : a dedicated person ran international expansion, a named agency (A Hundred Monkeys) handled naming, plus a creator network, outdoor ads, and giveaways. This was a big company spending to a plan, not organic growth.

- **The category was already educated** : GoWish has 1M registered users in Sweden. People already know the routine of sharing wish lists and marking gifts to avoid duplicates. Boon only had to win attention.

### 5. Differentiation

Functionally, Boon is nearly identical to GoWish: paste a link and it pulls the image and price automatically, multiple lists, mark-as-claimed, following friends, shared lists, birthday reminders. The differences worth naming:

- **Cross-store price comparison** : the site says "Compare prices across stores," and 11-05's version pushes the same idea. The Norwegian Ønsk is integrated with Prisjakt; I haven't verified whose price data the Swedish version uses.

- **Creator-made gift guides and a moodboard-style look** : the app has gift suggestions written by creators.

- **Local media backing** : "from the same company as Aftonbladet."

None of these is the main reason it climbed. Its push into the top 10 relied mostly on marketing budget and season. The differentiation at best gave it a "local, with price comparison" position alongside GoWish.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue isn't public, and there's no TrustMRR-style record. Norwegian trade media (m24, NRK, DinSide) covered Ønsk; for Boon itself there's only Boitano's case page and LinkedIn. Our x-radar finds no discussion of boon.se.

- Among ordinary Swedish users its exposure is large (creators, outdoor ads), but founders and the indie scene barely talk about it.

- Copycats: from 2026-09 through October, several "Önskelista" mini-apps with ratings near 0 appeared in the Swedish store (Wantd, Happy Giftlist, Wishdo, Önskelista – julklappar). This looks more like chasing the season than copying Boon specifically; I can't confirm.

### 7. What others can learn

- **Copying a product validated in one country into a culturally close neighbor** : pick a name that's easy to say across markets, launch before the seasonal deadline, and in the first week concentrate creators and outdoor ads to push the chart.

- **Lottery design** : "11:11 person a day gets their whole list fulfilled." It pulls in downloads and pushes users to build and share a list, and that step is the activation.

- **Monetization** : the free app earns through affiliate commissions and brand ads (Schibsted's ad site has a page on "advertising on Ønsk"; the m24 article is tagged affiliate marketing). For a small team trying to copy this, the hard part is acquisition cost: without a media group behind you, it's very hard to buy volume against GoWish.

### 8. Still unclear

- Retention: how much drops after the holidays? Ønsk's experience was tripling in a year, but in Sweden GoWish is already sitting on the market.

- Where the Swedish price data comes from, and how the commission split works.

- Ad budget size, and whether Aftonbladet's own ad inventory was used, are unverified.

- Which market is next (Boitano says "built to go to more countries").
