One wrong word and you fail: a small Slovak company turned the Polish gun licence exam into a 29,99 zł one-time-purchase app
What it is A study app for the Polish gun licence theory exam (the police WPA exam and the shooting association's shooting patent). It pairs the official questions with answers and explanations derived from the law, plus a textbook and audiobook. One-time purchase on iOS for 29,99 zł.
Why it took off Polish new gun licences hit a record 2025, and candidates face an exam where two wrong answers means failing, while the official answers are never published. It ranks #1 for "gun exam" on the App Store, and with only one or two paid competitors and a low bar in the education paid chart, selling a few copies a day was enough to reach the top 5.
BHow you could copy it Don't chase the Polish exam alone. Copy the "one country, one exam" template: pick a small country's licence exam where the official question bank is public but the answers aren't. Build answers with citations to the law, native-language audio, and a one-time iOS purchase, and get users through local-language search terms and category paid charts.

A Polish-only study app with an English name. In early November it climbed to #5 in the Poland App Store education paid chart and #65 overall in paid. It has no ads and no influencers. Two things drive it: the number of Poles getting gun licences hit a record, and the police publish the questions but not the answers. It was built by a design studio in Bratislava, which had already run the same template in Slovakia. This isn't a big business, but it's a path you can copy.
One wrong word
In June 2021, someone on the Polish shooting forum braterstwo.eu asked, "Has anyone taken the police gun licence exam recently?" A user named Sage67 replied that he sat it in September 2020 and failed the theory part by a single question. It asked how the armoury records the issue and return of firearms and ammunition. He picked "issue register and receipt register"; the correct answer was "issue-receipt register." He wrote: "I'll never forget it."
That's how these exams work. The police WPA exam has 20 questions and you need 18 correct. The PZSS shooting patent has 10 questions and you need 9 correct, and the first 4 questions (law and safety) can't have a single error. The questions are public, and regional police headquarters post the question banks on their websites, but the police don't publish the answers, and PZSS doesn't even give the options. Anyone who wants to memorize them has to ask in Facebook groups, "Does anyone have the answers for the collector's licence exam?" Those posts keep appearing.
What it is
Polish Gun Licence Exam (store subtitle "WPA tests and shooting patent") puts both exams in one app, switched by a toggle on the home screen. Each official question comes with the correct answer, a plain-language explanation, and a reference to the law it comes from, so you can check the source text. There are also two textbooks (with colour illustrations quoting the law), spoken Polish audio for the licence textbook (playable on the lock screen at 0.8 to 2x speed), timed mock exams that score by the two sets of scoring rules, a mistake log, and a daily question.
No account, no ads, no analytics, works offline. One-time purchase on iOS for 29,99 zł (about 8 USD), installs on iPhone and iPad. Listed in Aug 2026 2, and in Nov 4 it shipped version 1.5.1. The update note is a single line: "content substantially updated per the law in force as of November 2026." There's a matching "Pozwolenie na broń: egzamin" on Google Play, free to download with in-app purchase to unlock.
The seller is BEGRIP, s.r.o., and the privacy policy sits under pixelsorter.com. Pixelsorter is a design studio in Bratislava that says it has been operating for 11 years and has served 400 companies.
How well it really sells
First, the scale, so we don't overestimate it.
| Date | 10-28 | 10-29 | 10-30 | 10-31 | 11-01 | 11-02 | 11-03 | 11-04 | 11-05 | 11-06 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poland education paid chart | 10 | 5 | 14 | 13 | 28 | 38 | 47 | 8 | 5 | 5 |
| Poland overall paid chart | — | 124 | — | — | — | — | — | 172 | 66 | 65 |
Its rank bounced between 5 and 47 within a few days, and it had only 2 ratings throughout. Its only paid rival on the same chart, Kompas Strzelecki (39,99 zł, 3 ratings), also jumped between #10 and #3 over the same 39 days. That shows how low the bar is in Poland's education paid chart: a few extra sales a day can push you dozens of places up. By this estimate it sells somewhere in the single digits to low teens a day, roughly a few hundred to a thousand or two in monthly revenue (inferred, not verified).
The Slovak version of the same template, "Zbrojný Preukaz Test - Zbroják" (7,99 €, listed in June), is actually steadier: it has stayed between #2 and #5 on the Slovak education paid chart, peaked at #10 overall in paid, and has 11 ratings (App Store Slovakia, 10-28 to 11-06).
Why now
Demand is at a record high. Polish police data shows 2025 saw a record 50,709 new firearms licenses issued, up 10.6% from the year before. Active firearms licenses hit 411,769, while only about 235k existed in 2020. Privately registered firearms top 1.03M (bezprawnik.pl 2026-05-31, ukiel.info). Every license comes with a written exam. Lawmakers are also debating tighter rules, like mandatory periodic medical and psychological checks for license holders (the 2026 amendment list on wgc-strzelnica.pl), which gives people more reason to get through the exam before the rules change.
Users search for it themselves. People preparing for the exam open the App Store and search. In Nov 6, on the Polish store, it ranked #1 for "testy na broń" (gun tests) and "egzamin na broń" (gun exam), and #4 for "testy WPA." The app name is in English, but the subtitle and keywords target Polish phrases combining "exam + gun." It isn't in the top 8 for "patent strzelecki" (shooting patent), a term other apps have claimed.
Few people pay. Most apps in this niche are free and don't make the paid chart. Only it and Kompas Strzelecki are paying and charting. That makes chart visibility almost free, and it feeds search.
It sells answers, not questions. The questions are everywhere: testnabron.pl gives away 200 police questions and 215 PZSS questions for free, and YouTube has people reading 200 questions out loud with answers. What it's worth 29,99 zł for is answers derived from the law with citations, plus textbook audio you can play on the lock screen. Compared with a shooting-range course, that's cheap. The gun-licence audience skews male and cares about privacy, and "no account, offline, one-time purchase" is a selling point in itself.
I found no ads, social posts or press coverage: it isn't in the Meta Ad Library, searching its name only turns up store pages and a few chart aggregators, and the app says it has no analytics SDK installed. Paid acquisition is unlikely.
Who it's competing with
| Name | Paid | Score | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| AplikacjaStrzelecka (2023) | Free | 51,3.67 stars | Long-established, only the PZSS patent question bank |
| Epatent - Patent Strzelecki(2026-02) | Free + in-app purchases | 25,4.44 stars | Also two exams, uses gamification (check-ins, leaderboards, sync), and owns the "patent strzelecki" term |
| Patent Strzelecki – Testy WPA(2026-10-04) | Free | 12 | Launched two months later, with nearly the same "two exams, one app" and "per current law" claims |
| Kompas Strzelecki(2025-09) | 39,99 zł | 3 | The only direct paid competitor at the same price. Adds a collector's licence exam, has a website and accounts, but no audiobook |
| Kodeks Strzelca, TEDS (2026 8–September) | 29,99 / 39,99 zł | 0–1 | A new entrant at the same price, not yet charting |
| testnabron.pl and other web pages, YouTube videos reading questions aloud | Free | — | Zero barrier to entry, no explanations or textbooks |
At least 8 similar apps have launched since 2026. The questions are public, so the question bank offers no moat, and its selling points were copied almost word for word within two months.
The template is what's worth studying
Between May and November 2026, Pixelsorter launched more than 20 apps. It proved the Slovak gun licence first, then moved the same setup to Poland (the privacy policy path is zbrojakpl in both). The same architecture also went into the California FSC firearms safety certificate, Massachusetts BFSC, the New Zealand firearms licence, the EU EASA drone exam, the Slovak driving licence, and the boat licence. Each one alone is a small business of a few hundred to a thousand or so dollars a month. Together, they rely on long-tail search and the low bar of small-language paid charts.
A few things you can copy:
- Pick exams that are government-mandated, have public questions, but no official answer key. Answers derived from the law, with citations, are the reason to pay.
- Category paid charts in small-language countries have a very low bar, and a one-time purchase price can earn chart visibility with very few sales.
- iOS one-time purchase, Android free download plus in-app unlock.
- When the law changes, ship a major version, and write the update note as "per the law in force as of [month year]." To candidates, that's a concrete signal.
If it were you
The short verdict: don't chase the Polish gun licence alone. Copy the "one country, one exam" approach, and pick countries and licences that don't yet have a one-time-purchase version.
Who it suits: an indie developer or a small team of two or three who can build for iOS, is willing to read foreign regulations, and can accept an app that earns a few hundred dollars a month and wins on volume. Using AI to turn the law into cited answers and textbooks can bring the cost of one exam down to a week or two.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to build a single product that grows into a large business, or anyone unwilling to update the content every time the law changes (wrong answers mean real people fail).
How to start: make a list of small European countries and US states' gun licences, hunting licences, boat licences, drone permits, security guard licences and taxi exams. Filter for those where the official question bank is public but the answers aren't. Then search the exam name in the local App Store. If the first page has no paid apps and the ratings are all in the dozens, that's an open slot. Build the product to match: a toggle for two exams or subjects, explanations citing the law, native-language audio, mock exams using the official scoring rules, and a one-time offline purchase.
How to get users: write the title and subtitle with the local name of the exam and fill them with terms like "exam / questions / answers + licence name." Skip paid acquisition and start with search and paid category charts. On Android, free download plus unlock catches people who don't want to pay upfront.
How soon to move: the sooner the better. Pixelsorter launched more than 20 apps in half a year, and the Polish niche alone saw 8 new apps in a year. Countries that are good to build for will get taken one by one, so there's probably a window of a year or two (inferred).
Signs you've misread it: after one or two months live, you don't rank in the top 3 for the exam name in the local store, or you never reach the paid chart; or the country's official body releases a free app with answers; or Pixelsorter's Slovak or Polish versions drop off the charts and their rating counts stop growing. Any of these would mean demand for one-time-purchase versions of small exams is thinner than it looks.

Why Polish Gun Licence Exam (BEGRIP / Pixelsorter) made the charts
In short: this is a study app for the Polish gun licence theory exams (the police WPA exam plus the PZSS shooting patent), sold on iOS as a one-time purchase for 29,99 zł. It charted because three things stacked up: demand for Polish gun licences is at a historic high; the Polish education Top Paid chart has a very low bar, and only two or three paid apps compete in this niche; and it ranks #1 in App Store search for "testy na broń" and "egzamin na broń". No ads, creators or press coverage found. The developer is Slovak design studio Pixelsorter (BEGRIP, s.r.o.), which since 2026 5 to November has launched 20 apps in batches. This one is from their "one exam per country" study-app template.
1. Data: how big is its "breakout"
- Library (appstore, pl store, 2026-10-28 to 11-06): Education Top Paid ranks in order were 10, 5, 14, 13, 28, 38, 47, 8, 5, 5. It hit the overall Top Paid chart only once, in 10-29 (#124), and has charted consistently since 11-04: #172, #66, #65. Ratings have been adding 2,7 per 0 days the whole time. Versions went 1.4.2 → 1.5.0 (11-01) → 1.5.1 (11-05), with release notes reading "major content update to match the law in force as of November 2026, improved textbook and audiobook."
- Storelift (storelift.net/charts/pl/education/paid, 11-06): now #5,15, #17 days ago, best #5,15 days with 12 days on the chart. It's also on Appfigures and komori.tech's Polish iPhone / Mac education charts.
- The bar is very low, and that has to be said plainly. On the same chart, the direct competitor Kompas Strzelecki (39,99 zł, only 3 ratings) also bounced between #10 and #3 over the same 39 days (library, pl app_day). Rankings can swing between 5 and 47 within a few days, which suggests the chart is very sensitive to sales of a few units a day. So "Education Top Paid #5" likely means single digits to low teens of sales per day (inferred), not a large business. At 29,99 zł (about $8), monthly revenue is probably a few hundred to a thousand or two in dollars (inferred, unverified).
- The same template elsewhere: the Slovak version, "Zbrojný Preukaz Test - Zbroják" (€7,99, launched 2026-06-15), has held #2 to #5 on the sk Education Top Paid chart, peaked at #10 overall Top Paid, and has 11 ratings (library, sk app_day, 10-28 to 11-06). That version actually held up better than the Polish one.

| Shooting clubs / training courses (Target Training, Warsaw Gun Club, etc.) | Offline / web | — | — | Paid courses | The question bank is an add-on; the main product is live-fire courses and exam accompaniment |
Bottom line: this niche isn't short of competitors. At least 2026 new apps have launched since 8, most of them free. The official questions are public, so the question bank itself isn't a moat.
3. Where users come from
- App Store search (confirmed, the main channel): searching the Polish store (2026-11-06) with the iTunes search API, "testy na broń" ranks it #1, "egzamin na broń" is also #1, and "testy WPA" is #4. It isn't in the top 8 for "patent strzelecki", a term held by Epatent and AplikacjaStrzelecka. The app title is in English and it only supports Polish (languageCodes = PL), but the subtitle "WPA tests and shooting patent" and the keyword field clearly target Polish combinations of "exam / test + gun". Study-focused users search actively right before their exam, so this is the main source of traffic.
- Top Paid exposure (inferred): once it's in the top 10 of the Education Top Paid chart, people browsing that chart see it, and this feeds search.
- Mac / iPad: it's an iPad version that also installs on the Mac App Store, and komori.tech shows it on the Polish Mac Education chart. This is a small share, but it adds exposure.
- Ads (none found): no entry for this app in the metaads library, and no ad pages for Pixelsorter / BEGRIP (the library is a tracking list, so absence doesn't prove no ads). The app itself says it has no analytics and no attribution SDK, so paid acquisition seems unlikely.
- Social, press (none found): searching the local x-radar corpus for "pixelsorter" and "Zbrojak" returned 90 posts in the last 0 days. A Jina search for "\"Polish Gun Licence Exam\"" only returned store pages and a few chart aggregators, with no press, forum or Reddit discussion.
- Android version: Google Play has the matching app "Pozwolenie na broń: egzamin" (package com.pixelsorter.zbrojakpl), free to download with an in-app unlock for the full version. Install numbers were not available (chrome-stats is blocked by a captcha and the library has no data), so unverified.
4. Why it took off
- Demand is at a high, and the exam is a hard gate. Polish police figures show 2025 saw a record 50,709 new gun licences issued, up 10.6% on the year before. 411,769 licences are valid, and in 2020 only about 235k were issued. Privately registered firearms exceed 1.03 million (bezprawnik.pl 2026-05-31; ukiel.info; statystyka.policja.pl). Every licence requires a theory exam (the WPA exam needs 20 correct out of 18; the PZSS exam needs 10 correct out of 9, with failure on any of the first 4 questions). Parliamentary proposals to tighten the rules (such as periodic medical checks, per wgc-strzelnica.pl) also push people to finish before the changes take effect.
- Few paid apps in this niche, and the bar is low. Most competitors are free and don't chart on the paid list. In this niche only Kompas Strzelecki and this app are genuinely paid, so selling a few copies a day is enough to reach the top 10 of Education Top Paid.
- It owns the search terms. It ranks #1 for terms like "testy na broń" and "egzamin na broń", where competitors are mostly new apps with only 1 to 12 ratings and no dominant incumbent.
- The most complete content, and the most exam-aligned. Both exams sit in one app, with full textbook content and illustrations. Every answer is derived from the legal text and cites the clause (the police don't publish answers, and PZSS only publishes question stems). The textbook is read aloud and playable with the screen locked. Mock exams follow the scoring rules of both exams. A major update in November matched the current law. It doesn't win on "we have the questions" (those are public). It wins on complete, correct answers and explanations.
- One-time purchase, no account, offline, no ads. This audience skews male and cares about privacy, and tends to dislike subscriptions. 29,99 zł is cheap next to a single shooting range course.
- A copied template (resource-driven). Pixelsorter (Bratislava, describes itself as a 11-year design studio with work for 400 companies) first validated the approach with the Slovak Zbroják (#2,7,99 in sk Education Top Paid, €). They then carried the same architecture to Poland (even the privacy policy path is pixelsorter.com/zbrojakpl), and to California FSC, Massachusetts BFSC, New Zealand firearms licence, EASA drone, Slovak driving and boating licences. They launched more than 20 apps between 2026-05 and 2026-11 (iTunes lookup artistId 899099115), clearly using AI to mass-produce at low cost.
5. Differentiation
Compared with the free question banks (AplikacjaStrzelecka, NTS, the testnabron.pl website), it adds explanations with legal citations, a full textbook and audiobook, and puts both WPA and PZSS exams in one app. Compared with Epatent, which uses gamification (streaks, leaderboards, sync), it takes a "serious tool" route: no account, offline, one-time purchase. Against the similarly priced Kompas Strzelecki, the content is roughly on par, but it adds an audiobook, is updated to the law as of November 2026, and ranks better in search.
Are these differences why it took off? Only partly. The content quality makes people willing to pay 29,99 zł, but what actually made it visible was a low-bar paid chart plus #1 in search. The differentiation is also easy to copy: "Patent Strzelecki – Testy WPA", launched two months later, uses nearly identical selling points.
6. How many people know about it
Hardly anyone knows about it yet. Revenue isn't public; no press, X, Reddit or forum discussion turned up; it only shows on chart aggregators like Storelift, Appfigures and komori. But the niche is already crowded: at least 2026 similar apps have launched since 8.
7. Copycats
No evidence anyone copied it specifically. Similar apps launched after it include Patent Strzelecki – Testy WPA (10-04, its "both exams in one app" pitch is very similar in structure), Testy WPA / Testy na patent (09-22 / 09-29), Kodeks Strzelca (09-22, also 29,99 zł), and TEDS (08-26,39,99 zł).
8. What others can learn
- "Small country, government-mandated exam, questions are public but there's no official answer key" is a good angle. Deriving the answers from the law and citing the source is what justifies paying.
- Small-language markets have very low entry barriers on category paid charts, and a one-time purchase price can buy chart visibility with very few sales.
- Dual pricing: one-time purchase on iOS, free with unlockable features on Android.
- One template copied per country and per license (gun permits, driver's licenses, boats, drones), each listing is cheap to ship and lives off long-tail search.
- Privacy and offline use are the selling points for this user base (gun owners).
9. Still unclear
- Real sales and revenue, plus Android install counts.
- The actual keyword fields, and whether they run Apple Search Ads on keywords (ASA isn't visible in the database).
- The chart climbed after 11-04. Was it a major update after the law changed, seasonal exam peaks, or a few random sales? There are only 10 days of data, so the trend isn't stable yet.
- Only 2 ratings, so retention and reputation can't be judged.
