An Indonesian-built Chinese learning app hit the top 30 of the education chart within 6 weeks of launch. The features are things everyone has. It's the only one that spent 8 months building a following first.
What it is An Indonesian team's Chinese learning app. Explanations are entirely in Indonesian, levels follow HSK 3.0, with tone scoring and AI scenario conversations. Free to download, earns through subscriptions.
Why it took off Before launch, the team had spent 8 months posting content on TikTok and selling resource packs and online classes. Their existing followers moved straight into the app. In October they added a round of promotion by small Indonesian creators, and climbed into the top 30 on the Indonesian education chart, where the bar is low.
BHow you could follow Don't copy it head-on in Indonesia. Pick another small-language country or another exam. Spend half a year on native-language short videos and cheap resource packs to build paying users first, then ship an app to sell subscriptions. Use Huahua's bad reviews (unstable AI conversations, missing vocabulary lists) as your feature list.

Huahua Learning is a Chinese learning app built by an Indonesian team. Explanations are entirely in Indonesian, levels follow HSK 3.0. It launched in late September and by early November had reached #28 in the Indonesian App Store free education chart and #37 in the grossing chart. In the same summer, at least 5 other Indonesian-made apps combining Indonesian, HSK 3.0 and AI also shipped, and each had only 0 to 5 ratings. The difference isn't the app. Before Huahua launched, it had spent more than half a year selling HSK resource packs and live online classes on TikTok.
A video that just says "huahuahua"
In 2026 September 19, the TikTok account @huahualearning posted a video whose caption was just a string of "huahuahuahuahuahuaa". It reached 250k views and 17.5k likes (TikTok, 11-06). Three days later the Android version hit Google Play, and six days later the iOS version went live.
The account wasn't created for the app. The earliest post I could find is from February 2026, and a February 8 video titled "learning Chinese can be this fun" has 330k views and is still pinned. From 3 to May they ran live streams every Wednesday night. A video from late August says "Huahua Education has over five thousand students." The day the app launched, they already had followers, live viewers and students who had paid.
What it is
A free-to-download Chinese learning app that earns through subscriptions, built for Indonesians:
- It starts with a placement test, then arranges lessons by HSK 3.0 level: vocabulary, sentences, pinyin, characters.
- "Tone Lab" practices the four tones, drawing the tone curve in real time and scoring it.
- Voice calls and scenario conversations with AI characters, with feedback afterward.
- If you get stuck while studying, you can ask directly.
Pricing (App Store, Indonesia): Plus Rp22k weekly, Rp56k monthly, Rp679k lifetime; Premium Rp38k weekly, Rp129k monthly, Rp829k yearly. The website compares it to offline tutoring centers that charge over Rp1M a month, implying it's far cheaper.
The developer account is held by Adrian Marcelino, under the company PT Huahua Edukasi Indonesia. This account has only this one app. About 6 weeks after launch they shipped more than 20 versions, and by Nov 5 the version was 1.0.23.
How it got to an app, step by step
| Timeline | What they did |
|---|---|
| From ¥2026-02 | Posted short videos on TikTok teaching Chinese to Indonesian young people, using memes they know; live streams every Wednesday from 3 to May |
| In parallel | The website huahualearning.com sold web-based HSK resource packs (single level Rp149k, all levels Rp369k, one-time purchase), and one-on-one live classes from Rp50k per session |
| 4 to July | Built an "AI Laoshi" on WhatsApp for learning Chinese through chat, a precursor to the app |
| Mid-September | Recruited beta testers on Threads; the "huahuahua" video in 9-19 built up hype |
| 9-22 / 9-25 | Launched on Google Play, then the App Store |
| October | A round of small Indonesian creators posted videos under the same hashtag #huahualearningjourney, all ending with "Download GRATIS di App Store / Play Store" |
Each step built the audience for the next: short videos built followers, resource packs and classes found people willing to pay, the WhatsApp bot tested the AI teacher format, and finally the app collected subscriptions. In the early days after launch, you had to pay on the website. Later an update said "Plus and Premium can now be bought directly on iPhone." So the iOS grossing rank reflects only part of their revenue.
The October promo videos came from at least 10 accounts, mostly young Indonesians with a few thousand followers who study Chinese or are studying in China, like kevindicina with 6,980 followers. There are also mid-tier accounts that take promo deals: jasonwijaya, with 196K followers34, lists both another Chinese-learning app and a Klook promo code in the bio. We couldn't confirm whether these were paid partnerships. The app also has a two-person referral: share a link to invite a friend to play together, and you both get 7 days of Premium free.
Metric
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| iOS ratings | 10-28 is 38, 11-06 is 83, last 7 days +34, average 4.68 |
| New ratings per day | 2–5 at the end of October, 7–9 in early November |
| Indonesia Education, Top Free | On the chart every day from 10-28 to 11-06, ranked #28–57, best #28 (11-02) |
| Indonesia Education, Top Grossing | On the chart every day, ranked #37–196, 11-06 was #37 |
| Google Play | 9,547 installs, 7 days +2,081 (11-06) |
(App Store, Google Play, 10-28 to 11-06)
The numbers aren't large. The Indonesian education chart has a low bar: five to nine extra ratings a day is enough to reach the top 30. For comparison, SuperChinese, a product from a major international company, has 4,559 ratings on iOS in Indonesia, with +7 over the last 36 days, a growth rate similar to Huahua's, but its best position on the education grossing chart is #10, and its revenue is still well ahead of Huahua's.
Treat the student count with caution. The website's hero section says "13,610+ active students," and further down it says "20,000+ students." TikTok in August said "over five thousand." These claims don't match, so there's probably some inflation.
What users are saying
The praise is enthusiastic: "Wow, I'm speechless, this app is so good, it really helped, thanks Huahua Learning!" Some users also make requests, like wanting a PDF word list for each HSK level (10-08). Others want "tap a character to hear its pronunciation" (10-04).
The complaints are all about bugs: "I already pay monthly but the app is so buggy, please fix it" (10-25); "You launched before you were ready. I subscribed but the roleplay keeps not working, I wasted my money" (10-15). Fans are willing to pay first, but the product hasn't caught up, and the team has been shipping fixes nonstop for these 6 weeks.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Indonesian iOS scale (11-06) | Compared with alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| SuperChinese | 4,559 ratings, best position on the education grossing chart #10 | Broader features, with tone scoring and AI conversation; Indonesian is only a translation, with no local operations |
| HelloChinese | 1,307 ratings, 7 days +5 | An established beginner app that often ranks first on Indonesian-written recommendation lists |
| Duolingo Chinese course | — | Free, but not graded to HSK 3.0, and no Indonesian-speaking teachers |
| SuperTest(HSK Online) | 371 ratings | Drill-only exam prep |
| AI Chinese: My Mandarin Tutor | 48 ratings | AI speaking practice partner |
| Pinter Mandarin, Pathways, Kata Mandarin, Shandi and others | 0–5 ratings each | All launched in 2026 7–September by Indonesians, and they pitch almost the same thing: Indonesian, HSK 3.0, AI |
| offline / online tutoring centers | Rp1M+ per month | Huahua is really competing for this group's money |
The small Indonesian apps in the last line say the most. Their features, language and pitch are close to Huahua's, and some launched earlier, but none had a half-year-old audience behind it, so nobody downloaded them.
Why it took off
- The users came before the app. TikTok followers, livestream viewers, resource-pack buyers and online course students. Some downloaded and paid on launch day.
- The brand is local. Indonesian language, Indonesian memes, WhatsApp support, weekly livestreams. Users feel they're learning from "one of us" teachers. Big international players just translated the interface into Indonesian.
- Pricing is anchored to tutoring centers, not Duolingo.
- Rides the HSK 3.0 switch. The new standard breaks old textbook levels, so "latest version" is itself the selling point.
- The chart is cheap to climb. After a batch of small creator videos in October, daily new ratings went from 2–5 to 7–9, enough to get seen on the education chart.
If it were you
The bottom line: don't head-on copy Huahua in Indonesia, and don't assume copying a full-featured app is enough. What it proves is a playbook: one minority language × one exam change. Spend half a year building content and selling cheap resources to grow an audience first, then launch the app and charge subscriptions. The playbook works in other countries and with other exams. It's just slow, and the money is small.
Who it suits: people or small teams who speak a minority language, live in that country, and are willing to post short videos and go live every week. For example, people in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines or Malaysia learning Chinese, or people in Southeast Asia learning Korean or Japanese (TOPIK, JLPT). Not for those who can build an app but won't show their face or make content.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone hoping to build traction from scratch through paid ads or a "stronger AI feature". The 5 Indonesian apps from the same period already tried that, and all sit at single-digit ratings. Also not for anyone who only looks at USD revenue: Indonesian weekly subscriptions are Rp22k, roughly one dollar or a bit more, so unit prices are very low.
How to do it: don't start with the app. Step one: make native-language learning short videos using local young people's memes. Step two: sell one-time-purchase digital resource packs and cheap live tutoring, and see how many people pay. Step three: test the format with an AI teacher on WhatsApp or LINE. Once you have a few thousand past payers, launch the app. The app itself can follow Huahua's skeleton: level tests, tone scoring, AI scenario dialogue, spaced review. None of that is hard. Huahua's bad reviews are a ready-made requirements list: before launch, make the AI conversation solid, give word-list PDFs for each level, and make words audible on tap.
How to get users: your own TikTok account is the main channel, with a fixed weekly livestream. Run a teaser for a week before launch. After launch, find about ten learning and study-abroad micro-creators with a few thousand followers and run one round on the same topic with the same line, "free download", plus "invite a friend for 7 days free".
How early you need to be: this playbook has no hard window, but the "exam change" pitch does. The HSK 3.0 framing is still new. In a year or two, big-brand textbooks will catch up and "latest version" will stop being worth much (inference). If you want to do this, the content accounts should start this year.
Signs you've got it wrong: ① six months from now, Huahua drops out of the top 200 grossing chart and rating growth falls back to one or two a day, which would mean an app propped up by early fans can't keep users. ② SuperChinese or HelloChinese start hiring local teachers in Indonesia and running Indonesian-language content accounts, which narrows the local-brand gap. ③ Conversely, if one of those small Indonesian apps from the same period took off without any content and relied only on ads, it would mean the owned audience matters less than it looks, and this is easier than it seems.

Huahua Learning: Learn Chinese(ios_6796936556)
In one line: an Indonesian-run team (PT Huahua Edukasi Indonesia, developer account Adrian Marcelino) making an app that teaches Chinese to Indonesian speakers. Courses are graded to HSK 3.0, with tone scoring, AI voice role-play and gamification. The app is free with in-app subscriptions. Before the app, it had already spent more than half a year selling web HSK resource packs and live online classes on TikTok.
Bottom line: This isn't a new app that launched from scratch. It's an Indonesian business that spent about 8 months selling HSK study materials and live online classes on TikTok, claiming 5,000 to 20k students, and moved it into an app in September 2026. Existing followers and its own accounts gave it a base, then in October a batch of small Indonesian creators (KOCs) pushed it, and it hit #28 on the free chart and #37 on the grossing chart in the Education category, which has a low bar in Indonesia. The difference is that it's a local Indonesian product, brand and community (Indonesian meme videos, weekly livestreams, WhatsApp support and an AI tutor), not features.

| offline / online tutoring centers | Other | Always present | The official site says over Rp1 juta per month | Huahua's main pitch is simply being much cheaper than tutoring centers |
My take: functionally there's nothing unique about it; tone charts, AI role-play, and spaced review are all things SuperChinese already has. In 2026, from 7 to September, at least 5 Indonesian-made "Indonesian HSK 3.0" apps launched at the same time, so plenty of people saw this gap. What turned it into a business is Huahua, because it already had users.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- The app spent 8 months building content on TikTok before launch, accumulating a private audience (confirmed). The official account @huahualearning has 5,438 followers and 64.9k likes; the earliest work surfaced is 2026-02-26; the pinned video from 2026-02-08 has 333k views, and 04-20's has 113k. From 3 to May they ran TikTok livestreams every Wednesday night, selling a web-based "Vocab Growth Tracker" HSK resource pack and live tutoring classes with real teachers (from TikHub's scraped post list; the YouTube @HuahuaLearning channel has tutorial videos from about 8 months ago). One video's caption from 8-27 read "Huahua Education has over five thousand students."
- Monetized on the web first, then the app (confirmed). The website huahualearning.com sells lifetime resource packs: Rp149k for a single level, Rp369k for all levels; one-on-one live classes from Rp50k per session; WhatsApp review reminders. The page uses limited-time countdowns and urgency lines like "only 3 spots left today." Early on, users had to pay on the web; later an update note said "Plus and Premium can now be bought directly on iPhone" (App Store release notes). So the iOS Top Grossing rank reflects only part of the revenue.
- 4–July they built "AI Laoshi" on WhatsApp as the app's precursor (confirmed): an Instagram reel "Belajar Mandarin kini tinggal chat di WhatsApp! Kenalin AI Laoshi"; they also opened a TikTok account @AI Laoshi Mandarin (a video by viraagracia 2026-06-03 mentions it).
- Pre-launch hype and beta recruitment (confirmed): a "huahuahua" meme video by 2026-09-19 got 250k views; beta testers were recruited on Threads; Play 9-22 launched first, with iOS 9-25 following.
- In October they seeded Indonesian micro-influencers under a shared hashtag #huahualearningjourney (confirmed; whether paid is unverified). From 10-12 to 10-31 at least 10 accounts posted promo videos with consistent messaging, all saying "Download GRATIS di App Store / Play Store": cherrybao.mp4 (4 posts), jiayoujar, xielynjie, syalsasenja, hiivanapgg, flojournall, nihaonese, kevindicina (6,980 followers, "Indonesian student studying in China"). Mid-tier accounts included jasonwijaya34 (196k followers; his bio also carries SureChinese and Klook promo codes, so he's clearly a for-hire account), whose video got 10-06 with 21.7k views. Early on they also worked with the Chinese-learning creator gideongomi (35k followers, "Project 五五") and published a "Hua Hua Learning Review." On timing: after this wave of videos, daily ratings rose from 2–5 in late October to early November to 7–9 (appstore database), which lines up.
- Referral mechanics in the app (confirmed): invite a friend by link to play the online game together, and both get 7 days of free Premium trial; learning results can be turned into a video shared to Instagram Story (App Store release notes).
- Not found: Meta / TikTok ad libraries (they only track a set list of products, so a miss doesn't mean no ads), press coverage, X discussion (x-radar: 90 posts in the last 0 days), Product Hunt.
4. Why it took off
- Migrating existing users: before the app launched they already had TikTok followers, livestream viewers, resource-pack buyers, and tutoring students (self-reported 5,000 to 20k people), so the app had people downloading and paying from day one.
- Timing: the new HSK 3.0 standard (the site writes "HSK 3.0 (2026)") left old textbooks and international apps mismatched with the levels, and the local team sold the "latest version" angle. Demand from Indonesians learning Chinese is steady (studying in China, Chinese-Indonesian families, Chinese companies hiring locally).
- Indonesian localization and pricing: the interface and explanations are all in Indonesian, using how young Indonesians actually talk (for example memes like "jangan dikit-dikit sorry"); pricing is benchmarked against tutoring centers charging over a million rupiah a month (weekly subscription from Rp22k), positioned as "8 times cheaper than a tutor."
- Micro-influencer seeding: after one wave of same-message KOC videos in October, the rating growth rate clearly accelerated.
- Low bar for chart placement: ranks 28–35 in Indonesia's Education chart roughly correspond to 5–9 new ratings per day, so a small push is enough to get charted and noticed.
5. Differentiation
Compared with products like SuperChinese and HelloChinese, it differs in three main ways:
- Fully Indonesian-language, run by an Indonesian team through TikTok, livestreams, and WhatsApp, so users feel they're learning from "our teachers";
- A hybrid model: besides the app subscription, it sells lifetime web resource packs and live classes at Rp50k per session, so revenue comes from several sources;
- Courses organized by HSK 3.0.
Is this why it took off? Yes, but what mattered was the local brand and the private audience, not the app's features. Evidence: at least 5 other Indonesian-made apps with the same selling points (Pinter Mandarin and others) have only 0–5 ratings.
6. How many people have seen it
- Chatter in niche circles: buzz exists only in the Indonesian Chinese-learning TikTok community; no press coverage found, 0 discussions on X, no TrustMRR listing, and no one has publicly disclosed revenue.
- The website's numbers are inconsistent: the hero section says "13,610+ active learners, 3.3★," and further down it says "20,000+ learners, 4.9★"; a TikTok post from August says "over five thousand students." The numbers are likely inflated.
7. Risks and bad reviews
- Bad reviews in the Indonesian store center on "already paying monthly but the app is full of bugs," "role-play doesn't work," and "don't launch before you're ready" (10-15, 10-25). Over about 6 weeks the team shipped 20+ versions fixing issues.
- Indonesia's paying ability is limited and unit prices are low; Top Grossing rank swings widely (37–196), so revenue isn't stable yet.
8. What others can learn
- Validate demand with content and cheap digital products first, build a private audience, then launch the app: TikTok memes + weekly livestreams → web lifetime resource packs → WhatsApp AI tutor → app subscription. Each step builds users for the next.
- "Local language × exam-standard change" in small languages and small countries is a gap; big international companies don't bother with local operations.
- Price anchored to offline tutoring centers, not to Duolingo.
- A shared hashtag gets a group of micro-influencers posting same-message videos, plus an in-app two-person trial referral loop.
9. Still unclear
- Whether the creator videos were paid sponsorships, free Premium in exchange, or affiliate commissions is unverified.
- Unclear whether the learner counts (5,000, 13,610, 20,000) are actual paying users or registrations.
- The web vs. in-app revenue split is unknown; I couldn't find whether Meta ads were run.
- The developer Adrian Marcelino lists on LinkedIn that he is a University of Washington student based in Jakarta; his relationship to PT Huahua Edukasi Indonesia can only be guessed (founder or tech lead).
