A €15-a-year collar: a Bosnian hunter's app that replaces the Chinese GPS dog collar's stock software

What it is A hunting dog tracking app that replaces the bad stock app on cheap Chinese GPS dog collars (iCar IK122T Pro, TKSTAR). It has live maps, group hunts, map pins, and collar controls. The app is free; each collar costs €15 a year.

Why it took off It hasn't really taken off. The stock app was built for car tracking. Hunters needed an app that understood hunting, spoke the local language, and paired with just a phone number. TRAG posted in a few Facebook collar groups and launched just before the October hunting season. On iOS it was almost the only paid option, so a few annual subscriptions pushed it into the Croatian Top Grossing chart, where the bar is very low.

BHow you could follow it Don't copy it in the Balkans. There are already three or four similar apps there, and one is free. Instead, take the same model (abandoned Chinese hardware + a localized paid software layer + zero-friction pairing + hands-on support) to hunting-heavy markets like Poland, Italy, France, and Turkey, or to herding collars or trail cameras. Reach users through local collar groups and the shops that sell collars, and launch before next September's season.

B grade: real demand, people will pay a yearly per-device fee, acquisition costs almost nothing, and few people know about it. Copying it into a new country has a clear playbook. But the market ceiling is low, the lifeline depends on someone else's hardware protocol, and free local rivals have already arrived. Few people know about this yet

TRAG Tracking is a GPS app for hunting dogs, built by a small outsourcing company in Sarajevo. It doesn't sell hardware. It takes over the roughly €100 Chinese 4G collars that Balkan hunters already own, and charges €15 per collar per year. It reached #13 on the Croatian Sports Top Grossing chart, but across all platforms it probably has only a few hundred users. This piece looks at how big it really is, which part is actually valuable, and why copying it is better done in a different country.

A group post at 11 p.m.

On the evening of 2026 Oct 21 11:12, a person named Sandro Hrgić posted in the Facebook group "ICAR GPS - ESEEK - GOOXOTA IK122T Pro GPS OGRLICE":

Trag-Tracking domaća aplikacija za sve trakere i suntek kamere.

It says: "Trag-Tracking, a domestic app. Works with all collars and Suntek hunting cameras." Below that is a list of features: track several dogs at once, "pair companion dogs with a code like Garmin," bark detection, route history, group hunts, hunt spot pins on the map, and chase duration. The last line: "Free collar activation assistance, around the clock."

Almost everyone in the group bought an iCar or Gooxota IK122T Pro collar. The admin runs a collar shop in Živinice, Bosnia, and added a price under the post: the founder is offering 7 days of free trial, then one year costs 25 KM (about €12.8).

A month earlier, on Sep 24, someone in another group for Bosnian Rough-Haired Hounds (BARAK LJUTI) posted a full TRAG feature rundown. So far, that's all the promotion anyone can find.

What it is

The collar most Balkan hunters use is a Chinese 4G collar costing around €100: the iCar IK122T Pro and its many white-label versions. Local hunting shops sell them, and so do classified sites like OLX and Njuškalo. The collar comes with its own stock app, "icar gps," which has over 100k downloads on Google Play. Its listing says "Track your car." It was built for vehicle tracking. It has no group hunts, no local language, and many settings still require texting commands to the collar.

TRAG's pitch is simple: give this collar an app that understands hunting. The homepage says it plainly:

Type the SIM number and TRAG does the rest.

Enter the phone number of the SIM card inside the collar. The app asks the collar what model it is, configures it, and connects. No model lookup, no texting, no APN setup. Once connected, you can:

  • View a live map with all your dogs on one screen;
  • Run group hunts: share a link, the whole team joins the same map, everyone sees every dog, and a push alert fires when a dog starts barking;
  • Long-press the map to drop pins with notes and photos ("where the blood trail starts," "which gate needs to stay closed");
  • Adjust the collar's reporting interval, beep, flash, training tone, and shock from your phone, and check battery and signal;
  • Save every hunt's route, distance, and which dogs ran off, and replay them later.

Pricing in one line: the app is free, each paired collar costs €15 a year, and you pay for SIM data yourself (website, 11-06). The main target is the iCar IK122T Pro, and it also supports TKSTAR's TK909 / 910 / 919 and YG119. The interface is available in Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, English, French, and Turkish.

It's made by Slash d.o.o., a Sarajevo software outsourcing company, and this is the only app it has on the App Store. The iOS version launched in Oct 1. By Nov 3 it had reached version 51, with updates nearly every day for over a month (App Store, 11-03).

How big it really is: a number inflated by a small-country chart

Ranking #13 on the Top Grossing chart sounds good. But on the same day, #14 Bowken, #16 MadGoal, and #8 PSS Field Kit all have 0 ratings (App Store, 11-06). The Croatian Sports Top Grossing chart is so easy to reach that a few annual subscriptions can move an app from 80 into the teens, which is why TRAG bounced between 13 and 83 within a week. The rank only tells you that some people are paying. It doesn't tell you how many.

Balkan hunters use Android more, and Android is its main platform. Google Play shows only 100+ downloads. Across all platforms, the estimate is probably a few hundred users (inference). A third-party estimate says "under $5K monthly revenue," but that is only a floor for a band and not very useful.

Why anyone would pay for this

  • The stock app wasn't built for hunters. The collar hardware is good, but the software is a generic vehicle-tracking shell. In October 2025, the admin of the collar group relayed that "ICAR will rename itself next year and release a new app built for hunting." That shows everyone was waiting for someone to fill this gap.
  • Losing a dog costs far more than the subscription. A hunting dog is worth several hundred euros. Paying €15 a year for live maps and group hunts is an easy calculation. The stock setup already required hunters to get their own SIM and pay for data, so an extra yearly fee doesn't feel like a big jump.
  • Pairing was the biggest barrier, and TRAG removed it. For hunters who aren't technical, texting commands and setting APNs is a dealbreaker. TRAG needs only a phone number. If pairing fails, the developer will help remotely through Viber or WhatsApp, usually "within minutes."
  • The users are all in a few groups. People who buy these collars gather in a handful of Facebook groups, and the shops that sell collars run those groups. One post reaches the whole target audience, for almost no cost.
  • Timed to hunting season. Rabbit season in Croatia and Bosnia usually opens in Oct 1, and wild boar is in season too. The iOS version launched Oct 1, and the TikTok videos are all tagged #lovnazeca (rabbit hunting) and #lovnadivljesvinje (wild boar hunting). The timing lines up, but it wasn't deliberate as far as we know, so treat it as inference.

Who else is competing: three or four clones squeezed into the same gap in one year

Here's the problem. TRAG isn't the only one going after this gap. In 2026, several nearly identical apps appeared in Bosnia alone:

Garmin Alpha / AstroVery earlyIndustry benchmarkA handheld plus collar costs over €1,000. Hunters use it as the reference point.

DogTracker's website shows how crowded this space has become. Next to each dog's name on the map, it displays "GON 13 MIN" (chasing for 13 minutes). If a dog barks in one place for too long, it sends a "LAJANJE U MJESTU" (barking in place) alert. After a hunt, you can replay every dog's track like a movie and export it as GPX. These are details hunters actually care about, and it's free.

TRAG has four real differences: the iOS version already works, it supports TKSTAR, pairing needs only a phone number, and the developer provides hands-on support. But it's the only one of these apps that clearly charges, and it ranks third in installs. Its chart position shows that it's almost the only app on iOS collecting money, not that it's the most popular.

What we don't know yet

  • The store pages don't show how many people actually pay, or how Android handles payments.
  • Whether Sandro Hrgić and Hamza Kurgas, who posted in the groups, are the developers, partner sellers, or actual users is unverified. Whether the group admin who runs the collar shop takes a cut is also unverified.
  • If the OEM iCar app gets a hunting version, or changes its terms or servers, this whole class of third-party apps could go dark overnight.

If it were you

Bottom line: TRAG itself hasn't taken off, and copying it in the Balkans is pointless. There are already three or four competitors there, one of them free. What's worth taking is the structure: a high-volume Chinese hardware line with a terrible OEM app, a crowd of enthusiasts concentrated in a few Facebook groups, an annual per-device fee, and a pairing flow that lets non-technical people use it.

Who it suits: Developers who can build a mobile app plus a small backend, can reverse-engineer or integrate with the device protocols (for these 4G trackers, the protocols are mostly public or already mapped by open-source projects like Traccar), and who are based in a hunting-dog country, speak the local language, and are willing to do support on WhatsApp themselves.

Who it doesn't suit: People aiming for a big business. This is a market of a few thousand to tens of thousands of users paying around ten-odd euros a year each, so the ceiling is low, and the lifeblood sits with someone else's hardware and servers. It also isn't for people who don't want to talk to users one by one, since in this category support is the moat.

How to do it:

  • Going to another country: first check Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Turkey, and Romania, the countries with heavy hunting. See how well the IK122T Pro and similar collars sell on local secondhand sites and Amazon, and how active the local-language collar groups are. TRAG has added French and Turkish, which shows it's looking outward too.
  • Copy the hardest step first: enter only the SIM number, have the backend auto-detect the model, and push the config automatically. Matching DogTracker's features is enough; group hunts and chase duration are what hunters care about most.
  • Changing the audience also works: the same approach applies to herding dog and livestock collars, boat tracking, and trail cameras (Suntek and similar). Start with the model that has the worst OEM app rating and the most buyers.

How to get users: Find local collar-buyer groups and breed groups, get on good terms with the admins, ideally the shops that sell the collars, and have them post your first message. Give the shops a referral cut so they recommend you when they sell a collar. Offer a 7-day free trial with hand-holding through pairing. On TikTok, post screen recordings of the phone map during real hunts, tagged with local hunting terms for rabbit and wild boar.

When to launch: Most of Europe's hunting season runs autumn and winter, so you need to be live before next September to catch the next season's buying and app-switching wave. This season is already more than halfway through.

What would mean you got it wrong: If iCar / Gooxota ships an official hunting app with group hunts and multiple languages next year, the room for third-party apps disappears. If you post in target-country collar groups and fail to pair 30 collars within two weeks, there aren't enough of those collars locally: switch countries or hardware. Conversely, if TRAG or DogTracker passes 10k downloads on Google Play next year, the market is bigger than estimated here, and it's worth going in earlier and faster.

One line

TRAG is a GPS collar app for hunting dogs built by Slash d.o.o., a small outsourcing company in Sarajevo. It doesn't sell hardware. It takes over the roughly €100 Chinese collars Balkan hunters already own (mainly iCar / Gooxota IK122T Pro, with some TKSTAR), replacing the generic OEM app written for car tracking. It charges €15 per collar per year (quoted as 25 KM in Bosnian groups, about €12.8), with a 7-day free trial.

Conclusion: it hasn't actually taken off yet. Its #13 spot on Croatia's Sports bestseller chart reflects a tiny category in a small country, not real traction. On the same day, #14 Bowken had zero ratings. Within a single week TRAG bounced between #13 and #83. Across all platforms it likely has only a few hundred users: Google Play shows 100+ downloads, the App Store has 2 ratings, TikTok has 7 followers, and the Facebook page has 7 followers. What's worth looking at is the demand structure: the OEM app is bad, new hardware keeps selling, the app is needed the moment the season opens, and it's billed per device annually. But in 2026 years at least 3 Bosnian local developers have crowded into this gap at the same time. TRAG is neither first nor the one with the most installs.

How to read these numbers: #10–30 on Croatia's Sports bestseller chart is basically an app with 0–20 ratings, and a handful of €15 annual purchases can move its rank from #80 to the teens. So "#13" only shows that people are actually paying, not how big it is. Android is the main platform (many Balkan hunters use Android), and on Play it has only 100+ downloads.

2. Competitors (start with the competitors)

The same thing, swapping cheap Chinese 4G hunting-dog collars for a usable app, produced a wave of Bosnian local developers over 2026 years:

Verdict: lots of competitors, and they're very similar. TRAG's real differences are four: ① iOS is already live (DogTracker doesn't have it yet; GPS Dogs Tracking also has iOS); ② it supports TKSTAR as well as iCar; ③ pairing is automatic once you enter the SIM number, with no manual SMS commands (DogTracker makes users send a pre-written text); ④ the developer does support personally over Viber / WhatsApp, "replies within minutes". On the flip side, it is the only one in its category that clearly charges (DogTracker is free, and GPS Dogs Tracking's pricing is unverified).

3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

  1. Facebook hunter group posts (confirmed, main channel)
    • "ICAR GPS - ESEEK - GOOXOTA IK122T Pro GPS OGRLICE" group: 2026-10-21 Sandro Hrgić posted "Trag-Tracking, a domestic app, supports all trackers... free assistance around the clock on activation". The group admin, "ICAR GPS Ogrlice", runs a collar shop in Živinice, Bosnia, and added below: "the founder offers a 7-day free trial, then an annual fee of 25 KM". The group itself is where iCar collar buyers gather, which makes it TRAG's exact target pool.
    • "BARAK LJUTI" group (Bosnian rough-coated hound breed group): 2026-09-24 Hamza Kurgas posted a full feature write-up, offering "7 days completely free".
  2. Hunting season timing (inferred): the rabbit season in Croatia and Bosnia usually opens in Oct 1, and wild boar season is also in full swing in autumn and winter. The iOS version launched right on 10-01, and the TikTok video tags are all #lovnazeca (rabbit hunting) and #lovnadivljesvinje (wild boar hunting).
  3. TikTok @trag.tracking (confirmed, small reach): 7 videos posted between 2026-08-13 and 10-21, each getting 167–2,731 views, with 7 followers.
  4. Hardware channel: the original App is poor, so local collar shops (like the group admin above) need a local-language App they can recommend to customers. The group admin is helping TRAG add pricing info, but whether there's a revenue share or partnership is unverified.
  5. Not found: no discussion on X (x-radar: 0 posts in the last 90 days), no media coverage, no TrustMRR listing, and no evidence of paid ads (the ad library only tracks products on its list, so not finding any doesn't mean none were run).

4. Why it's getting attention (at its current scale)

  • The demand is real, and it's a hard pain point: Balkan hunters widely use iCar / Gooxota IK122T Pro 4G collars priced around €100 (sold by official shops, local hunting stores, and OLX / Njuškalo / KupujemProdajem). The original App is branded "Track your car", with no group hunting and no local language, and setup relies on SMS commands. 2025-10 The group admin also relayed that "ICAR will rename and release a new App for hunting next year", showing that people are waiting for someone to fill the gap.
  • Users will pay an annual fee per device: losing a hunting dog costs hundreds of euros, so paying €15 a year for live maps and group hunting is a good deal. Besides, the original platform already requires users to pay for SIM data, so ongoing payment isn't a hard sell.
  • Extremely cheap to reach: users are all in a few Facebook groups, so one post reaches the target audience.
  • The developer does support personally, so iteration is very fast: about 50 iOS builds shipped in just over a month; the website and posts repeatedly stress "if pairing fails, we'll fix it for you in the back end, replies within minutes". For hunters who aren't technical, pairing is the biggest hurdle.
  • iOS gap: the most direct free competitor, DogTracker, still has no iPhone version, so iPhone hunters only choose between TRAG and GPS Dogs Tracking.

5. Differentiation, and whether it's really why it grew

Against the original App, TRAG differs a lot (it understands hunting, speaks local languages, pairs automatically, and has human support), which is why this kind of product can exist. But against two or three Bosnian peers from the same period it has almost no differentiation, only three small advantages (iOS, TKSTAR support, automatic pairing), and it's the only one that charges. Right now its differentiation hasn't given it any lead: install count ranks third (1K+ / 500+ / 100+). Its place on the Croatian Top Grossing chart shows that "almost only it is taking money on iOS", not that "it is more popular".

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: still very few people know about it. It has only spread through a few Balkan hunter Facebook groups. No revenue has been disclosed, and no media or big X accounts have written about it.
  • Copycats / similar apps: it's less that someone is copying it and more that they're all crowding in together: GPS Dogs Tracking (2026-05, earlier than TRAG), DogTracker (2026-10, free, nearly identical features), LOV - Tracker (2026-04). DogTracker sells itself as "free, no ads", which directly puts pressure on TRAG's pricing.

7. What to borrow

  • "Hardware left behind by manufacturers → localized paid software layer": look for cheap, high-volume Chinese hardware with poor original apps (pet collars, livestock / herding collars, vehicle or boat trackers, camera traps / Suntek hunting cameras). If the protocol is public or can be reverse-engineered, you can charge an annual fee per device and promote through local enthusiast Facebook groups and hardware shops.
  • Make pairing zero-friction: enter only the SIM number, let the server auto-detect the model, and back it with the developer's live support over Viber / WhatsApp. This is what gets non-technical users to pay.
  • Time the season: launch on the day the hunting season opens.
  • It can be copied to other big hunting-dog countries (Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Turkey; TRAG has already added FR / TR languages), and those markets may be less crowded than the Balkans.

8. Still unclear

  • Actual paying users: how low the bar is for the Croatian Top Grossing chart, and how far €15 can push the ranking, can't be precisely converted; whether the Android version charges and how much isn't visible on the store page.
  • Whether Sandro Hrgić and Hamza Kurgas are the developer, partner sellers, or users recommending it on their own is unverified.
  • Whether there's a revenue share or bundle with the collar shops is unverified.
  • Whether GPS Dogs Tracking charges is unverified.
  • Will the OEM, ICAR / Gooxota, launch an official hunting app? A group admin 2025-10 said "next year." If they do, the room for third-party apps in this category shrinks. And if the OEM changes its terms or servers, integrations can break.
