TufaTV: a decade-old user base of Renren Video living inside a "Photo & Video" app
What it is The latest disguised iOS build of Renren Video in the China store. The store page is written in English and presents itself as a film and TV news tool, but in practice it streams and downloads overseas shows and sells memberships priced ¥8 to ¥99.
Why it took off Old users who log in find their watch history, favorites and memberships still there. On Xiaohongshu they tell each other "Renren Video renamed itself TufaTV," and they move back. No paid acquisition, no media coverage.

In Oct 7, a new app called TufaTV appeared in the China App Store. Its store page says in English "your entertainment companion for film and TV fans" and it sits in the Photo & Video category. A month later it had 1859 ratings averaging 4.74 stars, and it was gaining 70 to 145 more each day. It isn't a new product: it's the old piracy streaming app Renren Video, which Apple kept taking down, back again under a new name. Below: who it is, how users found their way back, why you can't follow it, and one lesson you can legitimately take away.
A member who watched on the train
In Oct 29, someone left a five-star review on TufaTV's store page: "Bro, I really like this software. I hope you'll see my review. I've been on the train for 3 days downloading lots of TV shows. I'm a member too, but as soon as I tapped in it crashed 😭 I'm going to be bored to death."
That review reveals three things the store page doesn't say: it downloads TV shows, it sells memberships, and users know it well. The store description never mentions streaming at all, only "discover hit shows, check charts, look up actors, bookmark favorites."
Other reviews say it more directly. Oct 20: "After logging in I was pleasantly surprised to see 24 years of viewing history." Same day, another: "Renren user for 10 years, you used to have a pad version." Oct 16: "Renren Video has had my membership for at least two or three years." Nov 3, a user gave four stars with the title "How did Renren Video become TufaTV?" and the body reads only: "Did my app break?"
An app listed only in Oct 7 already has users with 2024 years of viewing history in it.
Who it really is
Renren Video started in 2014 as "Renren Meiju," built on fan-subtitled overseas TV shows that drew a large user base. In 2021 its iOS app in June was pulled from the App Store, and in 2022 it was renamed "Duoduo Video." From 2023 on, studios including Universal, Sony, Warner and Fox sued it for copyright infringement. Since then it has kept resurfacing on iOS under new names every so often: around July 2025 it was called "Renren Theater" (which can no longer be found), and in early 2026 people on Xiaohongshu were asking "ios26.2 give me back Renren Video" again, this time under the name TufaTV.
There's quite a bit of evidence that lines up:
- The accounts are linked: old viewing history in the reviews, old favorites ("only half of my favorites are left"), old memberships.
- An iOS cracked-app resource site posted "Renren Video custom build 18" in Oct 1.1.5, with a description reading "Renren Video store version" and pasting TufaTV's English description.
- Renren Video's official site offers downloads for Android, HarmonyOS, Windows, Mac, TV and web, but for iOS it only says "send any email to get the latest download link."
- The developer account is a personal name with only this one app under it; the first release is 1.1.1, which suggests mature code was simply repackaged.
So don't be fooled by "it took off within a month." This isn't a new app acquiring users. It's an old product reconnecting with users it had lost.
How users found their way back
I found no paid acquisition, no influencers, no media coverage, and nothing on X in the last 60 days. Users came in through three paths:

The name deliberately leaves out "Renren," so searching "Renren Video" in the App Store doesn't find it. One user commented, "First time using it, took forever to find." That helps it: the harder it is to search for, the later it gets reported.
The numbers back up the story too (App Store China store data, 10-28 to 11-06): ratings climbed from 1031 to 1810, with 651 new ratings in the last 7 days. On the Photo & Video free chart it sat between #31 and #46, and its best Top Grossing rank was #73 (11-02). The top of this category is held by big players like CapCut and Meitu, but the bar behind them is low: a few dozen to a hundred-plus new ratings a day is enough to stay in the top 40.
One detail: the 90 reviews with written text average only 2.9 stars, complaining about crashes, broken screen mirroring, no landscape mode on iPad, and "three ads per five minutes of watching." Yet the overall rating is 4.74. Only about 5% of ratings come with writing; the rest of the high scores most likely come from the in-app rating prompt, given by paying legacy users (inference).
Where the money comes from
Memberships go through Apple in-app purchase: weekly ¥8, monthly ¥22, quarterly ¥45, annual ¥99. Users who don't buy a membership are pushed by ads, and reviews mention "it auto-redirects if you shake the phone" and "three redirects to third-party ads mid-episode." Revenue isn't public. The grossing chart bounces between #73 and #135, which only shows that people are paying.
Who it's competing with
On iOS there are many apps disguised as utilities that quietly stream shows, and they come and go constantly:

There's only one difference: rivals have to find users from zero, while TufaTV has a user pool that has paid and stayed for ten years. Feature-wise, it's actually worse than its peers.
If it were you
E, don't touch it. This is pirated content disguised for listing, violating copyright law and Apple's rules. The original itself is being sued by Hollywood studios. What made it work was ten years of old accounts and paying members, which a follower can never get. A new clone of the same thing would just land in the group above that acquires users from zero and gets pulled within weeks to months.
Who it suits: No one should copy this one.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone who wants to "secretly watch overseas dramas on iOS." Beyond the legal risk, your developer account can be banned, Apple's in-app purchase revenue can be withheld, and members' payments turn into disputes.
The one legitimate takeaway: keep user assets in your own hands. TufaTV got pulled so many times and still won people back because of its account system, cloud history and multi-device sync, plus a channel to reach users after a takedown (email, official social accounts, versions on other platforms). If you build a legitimate product that carries removal risk, such as AI companionship, crypto tools, or services restricted in some regions, build accounts and data sync on day one, and collect emails and social handles. Don't put all your users on one store listing.
Where that call might be wrong: ① RenRen Video gets official licensing and TufaTV goes legitimate; ② Apple doesn't pull it for months, and many clones survive long-term. That would suggest the risk is smaller than it looks, but it only changes "how long it lasts," not "whether to build it."

Bottom line
TufaTV is not a new product. It is the latest iOS disguise of the long-running pirate drama app RenRen Video (later renamed Duoduo Video). RenRen Video's iOS version has been pulled again and again since 2021, each time relisted under a new name and a new individual developer account (Duoduo Video, RenRen Theater…). This time it's TufaTV. It gets traction not through acquisition but through old-user migration: returning users log in and see 2024 years of watch history and favorites, their memberships carry over, and they spread "RenRen Video changed its name to TufaTV" on Xiaohongshu. The recall card treats it as a sample of a "reproducible reskin template." That judgment is wrong: others can copy the shell, but not the users and account system RenRen Video built over a decade.

- AppInsider timeline: 10-09 first appeared on the Free chart (#58), 10-12 passed 100 ratings, 10-24 entered the top 100,10-28 of the category Top Grossing chart after passing 1000 ratings. New ratings in the past week were 90% higher than the previous two weeks combined. In other words, it is still accelerating.
- New ratings over the past 7 days: 651 (appstore library app_profile). Among China-store indie developer apps launched after 2025-06, this ranks near the top; among similar disguised drama apps, only Han Xiaoju (1578) is higher.
- Never charted overall, only on category charts.
II. Who it really is: RenRen Video's new disguise (evidence)
The review RSS has 90 text reviews in total (10-07 to 11-05), many of which name it outright:
- "Why did RenRen Video become tufa TV / is my app broken?" (11-03)
- "RenRen Video's behavior is appalling! RenRen Video has taken my membership for at least two or three years" (10-16)
- "After logging in I was pleasantly surprised to see 24 years of watch history" (10-20): accounts and history carry over
- "10 years a RenRen user, you used to have a pad version" (10-20); "an app I've known for ten years" (10-19)
- "My earlier favorites didn't update here in time" (10-19); "Only half of my favorites are left" (10-17)
- "Since relisting it keeps crashing" (10-17); "The original RenRen Yingshi could cast to screen, why can't it now?" (10-11); "You should check the 2023 version for updates, that one was the best" (10-14)
- "Last Wednesday you said it would be fixed soon" (10-12, when the app had been listed only 5 days): the developer is replying to reviews, and the problem carried over from the previous build.

The iOS shell-swapping history of Renren Video (pieced together from websites and Xiaohongshu):
- Founded in 2014 in Shanghai as Shanghai Duoduo Network Technology (formerly 「人人美剧」). 2021-06-06 it was pulled from the App Store, and 2022-02-01 it rebranded as 「多多视频」 (Wikipedia, IT Home). Starting in 2023, it was sued for copyright infringement by Universal, Sony, Warner, Fox and others (36Kr 2023-02; Cechi Cinema 2026-10-26 via IT Home 36).
- Around 2025-07, it came back on iOS as "Renren Theater" (id6746426228) (Night Rain Breeze 2025-07-23, Firebird Game 2025-08-11: "Renren Video's official Weibo has a download link, and you can also search Renren Theater in the App Store"). Renren Theater can no longer be found via lookup.
- 2025-10 Xiaohongshu posts: "Renren Video was pulled from the store but can still be installed"; 2026-01 "ios26.2 give me back Renren Video" and "Apple's Renren is back". This shows that over that year it was cut off at least once more and swapped to a new package (specific package names unverified).
- 2026-10-07 TufaTV listed on the App Store.
- Android and other platforms keep running as usual. The official site rrsp.vin offers downloads for Android (package name "Xiaojumi"), HarmonyOS, Windows 1.25.0, Mac, TV and web, but leaves out iOS entirely, saying only "for the latest download address, send any email to [email protected]". The official "Renren Video" account on Xiaohongshu posts a "step-by-step download guide" (11-01; 62 likes, 58 saves) and is still posting "October's recommended dramas list" (10-01).
Be careful to tell these apart:
- "Renren Video Yidatqing She" (id6768513331, by Shiqiang Chen, productivity category, listed 2026-05-31, rated 1134) is another app piggybacking on the name. Its shell is a travel community, not the real thing.
- "Renren Movies Sharing Wonderful" (listed 2026-09-02, delisted 9-10) is a different company (Fenxiang Jingcai Network Technology, Jiaxing; legal rep Li Yuanmin; distributed by Huashu Media), and not the same as Renren Video (Zhongduomei).
- The recall card mentions a same-named "TufaTV" on Tencent's App Treasure, registered to developer "Suiguoliang", whose account has a row of short-drama sock accounts. The description of that App Treasure TufaTV is "local video playback + simple editing + drama guessing". We have not verified whether it's the same group as the iOS version. Based on the evidence, the iOS version's backend and accounts belong to Renren Video, while the App Treasure one looks more like a name collision or opportunistic name-grabbing.

Bottom line: there are many shells for "secretly watching overseas dramas on iOS", and they go up and down constantly. TufaTV's fundamental difference from them is that they have to find users from scratch, while it has a ready-made pool of older users who have already paid.

5. Why it works
- The old-user pool was already there. Renren Video had ten years of overseas-drama users and paying members. Once the iOS package was pulled, those users had nowhere to watch. When TufaTV went up, accounts, history and favorites reconnected, and old members just needed to renew. Nobody in the reviews asks "what is this"; they ask "why can't it cast" and "when is the iPad version coming back". This is retaining old users, not acquiring new ones.
- Shell-swapping has become a process. Duoduo Video → Renren Theater → ...... → TufaTV: each time a new individual developer account, a random bundle ID, an English description and an unrelated category (this time Photo & Video). The listing on the day was already 1.1.x, which means mature code was simply repackaged.
- The route to new packages stays open. The official site email, the official Xiaohongshu account, plus old users posting "it's been renamed" notes on their own. The name deliberately leaves out "Renren", to lower the risk of reports and of Apple search matching.
- Membership is how they charge. Weekly plans at ¥8 up to annual plans at ¥99, through Apple in-app purchase. It ranks #73 on the Photo & Video top grossing chart (11-02), and reviews mention "honored VIP users" and "have to buy a membership". But non-members face heavy ads ("three ads in five minutes", "jumps to another page when the phone shakes", "borderline ads on Douyin"), effectively pushing people to buy a membership.
- Low barrier in the category. The top 40 spots on the Photo & Video free chart need only dozens to a hundred-plus new ratings a day, and the top spots are held by big players like CapCut, Kuaishou and Meitu.
VI. Differentiation
Compared with similar shells, TufaTV has only one real differentiator: it is Renren Video itself, with an account system, watch history, multi-device sync (Android / PC / TV / web) and ten years of library and subtitle accumulation. Functionally it is actually worse than its peers: crashes, casting doesn't work (iOS 27 local network permission not handled properly), no landscape mode on iPad, battery drain. 90 text reviews average 2.9 stars.
This is why it has grown: users came not because it works well, but because nowhere else has their account and membership. A new shell can copy this wrapper, but not this user pool.
7. Money and visibility
- Revenue is not public, and nobody has written about TufaTV's. Media coverage has been about Renren Video's delisting in 2021, the lawsuits in 2023, and the September 2026 "revival" of Renren Movies.
- Visibility: it's spreading in small circles. Old Renren Video users tell each other the new name on Xiaohongshu (top single post 116 likes). Outside that circle almost no one knows; x-radar shows 0 posts.
- Copycats: strictly speaking, none are copying TufaTV; there is "Renren Video Yidatqing She", which trades on the "Renren Video" name, and the same-named TufaTV on App Treasure (relationship unverified).
8. What others can learn from it
- User assets are worth more than the shell. The account system + cloud watch history + multi-device sync is the only reason users could be brought back after the delisting. Even for compliant products, if there is a risk of platform removal (VPN, AI companion, encryption, gray-area tools), the account and data should be kept in your own hands first.
- Prepare a channel to notify users after a package swap. Email, official social accounts and announcements on other platforms are the routes that send users to the new package once the old one is pulled.
- Category arbitrage. Park a big player's app in the top spots with a long-tail category that has a low barrier (Photo & Video), and dozens of new ratings can hold a top 40 position.

- Real downloads and revenue (Apple doesn't disclose them; review counts and chart ranks are only proxies).
- What the iOS package before TufaTV was called and when it was pulled (there was also a break around 2026-01).
- Whether official emails or in-app popups directly push TufaTV links.
- Whether TufaTV listed under "随国梁" on Tencent MyApp and the iOS version are run by the same people.
- Whether the high ratings include incentivized reviews (no evidence of "review for free membership" offers seen).
- When Apple will pull it: similar apps usually last a few weeks to a few months, while 人人剧场 lasted a few months.
