Scroll videos, pick a shaman, pay by the minute: how a Korean fortune-telling app with 7 ratings squeezed into Top Grossing #15

What it is A Korean app where you scroll through fortune-teller intro videos like TikTok. Pick one you like and tap 1:1 for a live video call, billed per minute in credits. AI only handles subtitle translation and post-call notes.

Why it took off: live readings are billed by the minute with high ticket sizes, all the money flows through in-app purchases, and the Korean lifestyle Top Grossing bar is low. Masters who came from TV and Instagram brought their regulars with them, and a few people spending big was enough to push it into the charts.

BHow you could follow: swap the culture and market (overseas Chinese fortune telling, Japanese uranai, Southeast Asian divination) and do the same: sign a batch of practitioners who already have followers, let them pull in customers through public leaderboards and free vouchers, and make the app just a video feed that shows prices upfront and bills per minute.

B grade: the model is clear and few people outside know about it, but it's a two-sided business. The hard part is signing practitioners who already have audiences, which is very hard for a solo indie dev to cold-start. Korea already has 천명, 사주나루 and big platforms, so you'd have to take it to a different market. Whispers in small circles

A small Seoul company turned live fortune-telling into a TikTok-style vertical feed: scroll past tarot readers, Four Pillars masters and shamans you like the look of, tap in, and you're on a 1:1 video call billed by the minute. It launched a month ago, has only 7 ratings on the App Store, and has still sat around #10-#20 on the Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. Below: what it actually sells, why the money is coming in so fast, where users are coming from, and whether you can run the same play somewhere else.

A shaman who sold 27 hours in 18 days

In 2026 Oct 7, FlipToc (플립톡) launched on the Korean App Store. On day one, someone left a 5-star review:

I was so glad I could meet a master who appeared on 《운명전쟁》. (It was great to meet a master from 《Fate War》.)

《운명전쟁49》 is a Disney+ shaman-audition show. That review shows the app's core: people aren't drawn in by the algorithm, they come for a specific master.

FlipToc's public master leaderboard lists how many sessions and minutes each practitioner sold. From Oct 1 to 18, 57 of the 91 masters had bookings, for 1,659 video sessions and roughly 248 hours in total. The top spot went to a shaman with 58 sessions over 18 days, 27 hours and 43 minutes in all. The 7 busiest masters accounted for nearly half of the total time, and 34 masters had no sessions at all (from FlipToc's public leaderboard, compiled by AstroDir 10-17; the figures are as the platform reports them).

What it sells

The store page states it plainly:

  1. Scroll full-screen master intro videos and pick one;
  2. Before going in, see how much per minute that master charges (the screenshot shows 2,000 credits per minute);
  3. Top up credits, queue up, and when it's your turn, start the 1:1 video;
  4. After it ends, get a session summary and ask Flip AI follow-ups like "what did the master say about my relationship?", answered only from that record.

Categories are tarot, four pillars, 신점 (divination by spirit-possession) and physiognomy. The store page ends with "for entertainment and self-reflection only". New users get 20,000 credits after the tutorial, roughly 15 minutes.

AI plays a supporting role here: real-time subtitles in 60 languages, session records, after-session Q&A. The fortune-telling is done by humans. That stands out on Korea's lifestyle Top Grossing chart: on the same day (10-18), 12 of the top 40 apps were fortune-telling apps, most of them model-generated, such as the AI persona "김귀자 할머니" (AstroDir) at #17.

7 ratings, so how does it rank #15?

This is the question readers most want answered. The answer has three layers.

High ticket size. A tarot session averages about 7 minutes, and a 神占 (divination) session about 13 minutes. At 2,000 points per minute, one 神占 session costs over 20,000 points. Rough math (inferred): 248 hours is about 14,900 minutes, at 1,500–3,000 points per minute, which puts 18 days of gross at roughly ₩22M to ₩45M, part of it from free points.

The money all goes through in-app purchases. On Google Play the in-app purchases are $9.49–$109.99. Similar live fortune-telling apps take payment by phone or on the web instead, e.g. 사주나루, with 556k installs on Play and 7 days more than 9,107 times, yet it doesn't appear on either store's grossing chart (Google Play data, 11-06; how it collects payment is an inference). The same revenue only shows up on the charts if it goes through in-app purchases.

The chart bar is low. 11-06 타이트사주, ranked #19 on the Korea iOS Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, has only 6 ratings. Making the top 20 probably takes only a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars in monthly revenue (inferred).

So FlipToc's numbers look like this: on the iOS Korea store's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart it ran between 10-28 and 11-06 every day, at ranks 14–36, and 11-06 was ranked #15. On Google Play it had 1,789 installs (11-06), and 7 days in it made 784 more, with Korea Lifestyle Top Grossing holding steady at ranks 15–17. Downloads are tiny, and the money comes from a small number of people. It didn't blow up. It took an old business that was already profitable and gave it a payment model the charts can see.

Where users come from: the masters bring them

Press10-26, 27 and more than a dozen Korean financial media outlets ran "official launch" stories on the same day, by which point it had already been on the charts for two weeks.
Paid adsNot found in the Meta ad library; almost nobody on TikTok or X mentions it.

The rankings are the engine of this playbook. By publishing each master's transaction time, masters get results they can show off, and they bring their Instagram regulars onto the platform. The platform gives them an 'online consultation room' with no rent and their own choice of hours. Regulars already pay, so conversion is high.

Reviews praise the experience: "귀차니즘 해결" (solved the can't-be-bothered-to-go-out problem), "프라이빗해요" (it's private). Some complain that on iPhone you can only see the rankings and can't search for other masters (10-28), which shows the product is still rough.

Who's behind it

Run by ASX Company, led by 이재석, a KAIST electrical engineering grad who was a programmer on Nexon's 《MapleStory》, and who previously founded the K-pop fan platform MyMusicTaste (which raised a 10M-dollar Series A led by SoftBank) and then exited. SK Networks' business head 최성환 is a shareholder (newstap). His background helps explain how it could place a dozen-plus media stories and win an expo booth. The widely circulated "₩15.9B Series A" figure has no traceable source and may be confused with MyMusicTaste's funding; unverified.

Who it's competing with

Korea's online fortune-telling market is mature. Live readers charging by the minute, and even video readings, are not new:

Purple Garden, Kasamba (US), Astrotalk, InstaAstro (India)InstaAstro has 12M usersOverseas per-minute live psychic readings; the model was validated long ago

What's new about FlipToc is just a combination: picking readers from a short-video feed, instant connection with no booking, and AI translation plus notes you can ask questions about. What actually pushed it onto the charts (real people billed per minute, masters bringing their fans) is also done by competitors. Its bet is the overseas 'K-Fortune' play; its Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and US stores still have zero ratings.

If it were you

B. Live readers billed per minute, in-app purchases, and supply-side masters with their own followers bringing in customers: this model was validated in Korea once more, and almost nobody outside noticed. But it's a two-sided business, and the hard part is signing up talent, not writing code. Korea already has 천명, 사주나루, and big companies, so the places to follow in must be different.

Who it suits: someone with real connections in a fortune-telling, divination, or spiritual-practice scene who can sign 20–50 practitioners with followings in one go; or a team with someone who knows this business in a specific market, such as fortune-telling for overseas Chinese, Japan's 占い, or divination in Thailand and Vietnam.

Who it doesn't suit: indie devs who can build product but don't know a single master (no supply, and the video feed will be empty); anyone wanting pure AI fortune-telling (that's a different, cheap, volume-driven business, and the charts are already crowded); anyone wanting to go head-to-head in Korea (천명 and 포스텔러 are both there).

How to build it: Start with the supply side. Pick one culture and one language, then sign a batch of practitioners who already have their own followings, and have each one record a vertical intro video. The app only needs three things: a video feed, prices shown before you enter, and 1:1 videos billed by the minute. Take payments through in-app purchases and let the charts bring in the traffic (Apple's cut is the cost). Use AI only for translation and recording, not for the actual readings.

How to get users: follow its approach by treating public rankings and "#1 of the day" screenshots as showcase material for practitioners, paired with free 15-minute vouchers for new users, and have them share on their own Instagram, Xiaohongshu, and LINE. Then look for an offline fortune-telling or spiritual expo to set up a booth. Check whether practitioners' own audiences are big enough before considering paid acquisition.

When to move: the window isn't urgent on any particular day, but it has to come before big platforms like 포스텔러 and 점신 build short-video reader matching. A sensible timeline is to launch in your chosen market around the 2027 Lunar New Year (new-year fortune is peak season for fortune-telling, inferred).

Signs you misjudged it: ① by the end of 2026, FlipToc drops out of the top 40 on Korea's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, showing that only its first month's regulars and free points were holding it up; ② the share of masters with transactions on the official ranking goes flat or falls (October was 57/91); ③ 포스텔러 상담소 or 천명 adds a short-video feed and ranks above it within two weeks, showing this combination has no moat and the contest is still about who has the most masters; ④ the reverse: if its US, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand stores start getting ratings and top-grossing rankings, that shows 'translate and sell to foreigners' is real, and the opportunity to repeat it in other cultures is bigger.

플립톡 FlipToc: why 사주·타로 (iOS 6798355391) made it onto the charts

In one line: a Korean platform for live video readings with real tarot readers, four-pillar astrologers and shamans (1:1), using a TikTok-style vertical feed to pick a reader and charging per minute; AI only does subtitle translation and notes. Verdict: it didn't 'blow up'. It takes an old business that already makes money (phone or chat readings billed per minute), moves it to video, and routes everything through in-app purchases. Korea's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart is easy to get onto, so a few high-spending users, mostly fans brought in by the readers themselves, keep it around #15. Downloads are still small and it hasn't broken out beyond its niche.

Rough math (inferred, unverified): 248 hours ≈ 14,900 minutes; at 1,500–3,000 points per minute, 18 days of revenue is roughly ₩22M to ₩45M, partly from free points given to new users. That scale matches the entry bar for Korea's Lifestyle Top Grossing at #15–#25. With 7 ratings and under 2k installs yet ranked among apps like Tinder and Bumble, the only conclusion is that a small number of people here are spending a lot.

2. Competitors

Online fortune-telling in Korea is a mature market. Plenty of apps offer AI reports for a fee, several bill real people per minute, and more than one does video.

4. Why it took off

  1. The business model is high-ticket by nature. Users pay real people by the minute, and a typical session lasts 13 minutes, so at 2,000 points/min that's over 20,000 points per session. You don't need many users to push it to the top of the grossing chart (from the official ranking page and AstroDir data).
  2. All payments go through in-app purchases, which show up on the charts. Google Play lists in-app purchases at $9.49–$109.99. Similar real-person platforms (사주나루 has 550k installs but isn't on either store's grossing chart) seem to take payment mostly by phone or web, which store charts can't see. So part of FlipToc's ranking comes from how it collects money: the same revenue becomes visible to the chart (inference).
  3. The bar for Korea's Lifestyle grossing chart is low. On the same chart, #17 김귀자 할머니 has 9,458 ratings and #19 타이트사주 has only 6, which suggests that a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars in monthly revenue is enough to reach the top 20 (inference).
  4. The users come with the masters. Masters bring their own Instagram followers and the TV fame of 《운명전쟁49》. The platform gives them an online "digital consultation room" with rankings, self-set schedules, and no rent, so they're willing to send their regulars there. Those regulars already pay, so conversion is high.
  5. The product experience is genuinely smooth. No booking needed, masters online late at night are instantly visible, prices are shown before you enter, and after a session you can ask the AI "what did the master say just now?" Reviews say things like "귀차니즘 해결" and "프라이빗해요" (App Store reviews).
  6. The founder has resources and execution. 이재석 is a KAIST graduate who was a programmer on Nexon's 《MapleStory》, and he founded the K-pop platform MyMusicTaste (led by SoftBank, $10M Series A) and exited it. He can place a dozen-plus media stories in a day and secure offline booth space, and the team is hiring on Wanted.

5. Differentiation

  • Short-video flow for choosing masters ("Discovery, Not Search"): competitors use search plus ratings, while here you scroll videos and go straight to the one you like.
  • No booking needed, 24-hour online access, video 1:1, with the per-minute price shown before you enter, and points deducted by the minute.
  • The AI is only an assistant: real-time subtitles and translation in 60 languages, a summary after the session, and Flip AI (RAG) to ask questions over your own consultation records. 천명 only has notes and no Q&A.
  • It went global from day one ("K-Fortune"; the site has Chinese, English, and Thai versions, and it's listed in the US, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand), but the overseas stores still have zero ratings.

Are these differences why it took off? Partly. What actually pushed it onto the charts is "real people charging by the minute, payment through IAP" plus "masters bringing their own fans," and competitors have both too. The video feed and no-booking design shape how suppliers present themselves and how users buy on impulse, which may raise conversion and session length (average 13 minutes), but there's no control data to prove it. The translation and global-expansion angle isn't reflected in the data at all so far.

6. How many people have seen it

  • Revenue: not public. But the official site publishes each master's session count and minutes, so anyone familiar with the market can estimate gross revenue.
  • Media: a press-release round from 10-26 small and mid-sized Korean finance outlets; in English only AstroDir (a fortune-telling product directory) wrote one piece, on 10-17. 0 posts on X, 0 on TikTok.
  • Copycats: I haven't yet seen anyone directly copying the "short-video feed plus video readings" model. 포스텔러 September recently launched "포스텔러 상담소" (real-person consultations, 0 rating), which is in a similar direction, but I can't confirm it's copying this.
  • Verdict: it's being talked about in small circles (Korean fortune-telling practitioners, master communities, and AstroDir), but it hasn't broken into mainstream users yet.

7. What others can learn

  • For cold-starting a two-sided platform, sign suppliers who already have fans first (masters from TV and Instagram), then give them rankings and shareable material so they bring in their own customers.
  • High-ticket real-person services billed by the minute through IAP can reach the grossing chart without many downloads, and that chart exposure then drives a second wave of traffic.
  • A short-video feed works for showing suppliers in scenarios where choosing a person matters, such as real-person consultation, companionship chat, or tutoring.
  • The AI doesn't compete with the real people. It only handles translation, recording, and after-the-fact Q&A, which sets it apart on charts crowded with AI fortune-telling apps.

8. Still unclear

  • The recall card's "15.9B KRW Series A" has no source I could find. It may have been confused with MyMusicTaste's funding round; unverified.
  • The figures on the official ranking page are self-reported; I don't know whether they include web and Android.
  • Unknown: what share of revenue comes from free points, the repurchase rate, and how many users are old clients brought by the masters.
  • How 사주나루 and 천명 collect money (phone, web, or IAP) is inferred from their absence on the grossing chart.
  • Whether the overseas "K-Fortune" can take off: the US, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand stores currently all have 0 ratings.
  • After the 10-31 expo, Google Play gained 456 extra installs in one day (11-03). The expo probably drove them, but I can't prove it directly.
