34 ratings and it charted #15: Kokohana packages Japanese dating as a "grown-up worries bulletin board"

What it is A Japanese pay-per-message chat app dressed up as an anonymous worries bulletin board, but in practice it's a dating service: each message costs 250 yen, and the users are mainly lonely men aged 30–60.

Why it took off A small user base with high spend per user, and "female" users who reach out as soon as you sign up to coax payments (suspected to be fake). The operator is a search-ads agency; its English localized title hides "dating" to catch search traffic, and it picked the low-barrier Lifestyle category.

DHow you could follow it Don't copy its monetization, copy its distribution: localize the title and description keywords, pick a less competitive category to chase the bestseller chart, and write the lonely-user scenario concretely. If you want to build a serious confiding product (human listeners or AI companionship), you can borrow its copy and audience targeting.

Grade D: Japanese dating is a long-running gray category, crowded for over a decade, and look-alikes like Aventure and メロドラマ never took off. This one charted because the operator brings its own paid-acquisition capability and sits on the edge of disclosure rules and Apple's terms, with suspected fake users added on top. Followers get the second part but not the first. Few people know about it yet

Kokohana is a Japanese iPhone app that launched in late September and calls itself "大人のお悩み掲示板" (a grown-up worries bulletin board). It has only 34 ratings on the Japan App Store, yet ranks #15 on the Lifestyle bestseller chart, alongside dating apps with thousands of times as many ratings. It isn't earning a lot from many people; it's earning a lot from a small group of middle-aged men. Below: how it charges, where its users come from, and whether you can get into this business.

Spent ¥50k in a month and nobody replied

On Nov 1, 2026, a one-star review on the Japan App Store read: "1 months of use, spent over ¥50k, kept messaging several people and got ignored." (50k+ yen.) The same day, another: "Paid ¥1500 and got double charged several times… a total scam app." The day before: "In the end you have to pay anyway, what's free about it, lol" (in Japanese).

A day earlier, an Oct 30 one-star put it more bluntly: "No one sends worry-listening messages! What arrives are explicit images. Probably shills."

Over the same stretch, five-star reviews came in almost daily, in a completely different tone: "Kokohana helped me" (11-01), "a problem I thought was hopeless started moving" (11-02), "I got comforted by someone with good vibes 😭" (11-03).

Both kinds of review describe the same app.

What it is: a worry-consultation front for a pay-per-message chat app

The store page title reads "ココハナ|お話し相手がチャットで見つかる大人のお悩み掲示板" with the tagline "ココロをハナすと、心に花が咲く". It lists four features: an anonymous worries board, private chat between 1 and 1, finding people by avatar / nearby / age ("みつける"), and saving them with "いいね". The description says: "当アプリは異性紹介事業を目的としたアプリではありません" (this app is not intended as a match-making service).

But the second half of the same description is stuffed with dating search terms: "であいけい", "デアイケイ", "まっちんぐ", "こいかつ", "人妻・主婦", "既婚者だけど…", "近所で気軽に会える飲み友達", "熟年・シニア", "アラフィフ". More directly, its English (en-US) localized title is "新しい友だちとリアルマッチングする出会い系チャット_ココハナ" (the App Store English page, 11-06). The Japan store search also indexes English localizations, so people searching "出会い系" (dating site) can find it, while its Japanese front looks like a confessions community.

The monetization is the old Japanese dating-app playbook: free download, pay with points. A dating-app reviewer, October, signed up and tested it: 1 points = 10 yen, one message costs 25 points, which is 250 yen; "リミット解除" (limit removal) costs 2,000 points, about ¥20K. Top-up tiers run from ¥1,500 to ¥15,000. He said that as soon as he signed up, a flood of attractive women sent him messages ("会いたい🥰", "気になったよー!"), but the conversations didn't match up, and when his points ran low, strange activity appeared, suggesting decoy accounts (hibana.rgr.jp, 10-31). A site that aggregates Japanese dating-app reputation rates its "store review decoy risk" at 64%, which is high (sakura-killer.com, aggregating 31 reviews).

There's no hard proof of decoys, but the payment model and review distribution match Japan's long-running pay-per-message dating apps almost exactly.

Why 34 ratings can still reach the bestseller chart

On the same day and the same chart, Kasual next to it has 14,827 ratings, メローズ has 614, and Wakoo has 566. Ranking alongside apps with one or two orders of magnitude more ratings means its revenue comes from very few users: ¥250 per message, and a user hooked by a "woman" starting a conversation can easily spend tens of thousands of yen a month.

Two other choices lower the barrier:

  • Pick the Lifestyle category, not Social. Japanese dating and video-chat apps mostly crowd the Social Networking bestseller chart, where ワクワク sits at #8 with 67K ratings. The Lifestyle chart is mainly fortune-telling and a few dating apps, and reaching the top 20 there takes far less revenue (inferred). Monthly revenue isn't public, but this rank suggests a few million yen per month (estimate, unverified).
  • The audience is precisely targeted. The description names people in their 30s–60s, married, housewives, single while posted away, and retirees. This group wants to talk to the opposite sex but doesn't want to install an app whose name says "dating site". The "adult worries board" gives them a respectable entry point.

Ratings grow by only about 1 a day, with 9 new ratings in 7 days, and no acceleration. Five-star reviews are repetitive and evenly paced, while one-star reviews cluster between 10-30 and 11-01, which looks like someone steadily adding positive reviews to hold a 4.5 average (inferred).

Where users come from

  • Store search. This is the strongest evidence: the English localized title captures "出会い系" and "マッチング", and the hiragana and katakana variants in the description target users who search for whatever comes to mind (the description literally says so).
  • Search ads (inferred). The operator 株式会社アームズ is in Ikebukuro, registered in June 2024 with ¥2M capital, and its own website says its business is Google ads, listing ads and Apple Search Ads account management. A one-star review from October 11 reads "無料ではない。詐欺広告" (not free, a scam ad), showing some users came through ads. How much was spent is not visible.
  • Affiliate promotion and sponsored content (inferred). The reviewer noted it has no disclosed entries in the "案件情報" section of an affiliate platform. Three weeks after launch, a dating news site published a very positive write-up.
  • You can barely find it on TikTok or X. Searching "ココハナ" mostly returns the Shueisha manga magazine of the same name.

An ad agency that knows paid acquisition built a dating app itself. That is the real reason it works (inferred). Another website at the same address says it operates a "マッチングサイト"; I haven't verified whether it's the same company.

This isn't a new category. It's a decades-old business in Japan. ココハナ's only new elements are the packaging and distribution, and Aventure and メロドラマ have already tried the same packaging without success. The difference is who buys ads. The ones actually selling "confiding" are another group: fortune-telling apps (ウラーラ and Chapli at Lifestyle Top Grossing #6 and #7) charge consultation fees by the minute, while AI confiding apps are basically absent from the charts.

The risks are on the surface

If it were you

The bottom line: This business really makes money, but it's a crowded, gray-area old category. ココハナ got onto the chart thanks to its operator's own paid-acquisition skills and a packaging that skirts the rules. If you copy it, you take on all the risk without necessarily getting its acquisition skills.

Who it's for: teams already running dating apps, video chat, or fortune-telling in Japan, with filing credentials, Apple Search Ads and affiliate experience, and the ability to run their own customer support and risk control. For them, the takeaway is a new shell and a category strategy.

Who it's not for: indie developers, small teams, and anyone outside Japan. Without filings and decoys, you can't keep paying users; with decoys, you're betting against the law and Apple's terms. Without paid-acquisition skills, Aventure has already shown the same shell won't take off.

How to do it: Don't copy the monetization. Copy the distribution.

  • Localized title and description keywords: put the terms users actually search (including hiragana, katakana and colloquial variants) into the English localized title and other localized fields. This works for any Japan-store app.
  • Pick a less crowded category to chart: the same revenue ranks much higher in Lifestyle than in Social, and the rank itself is exposure.
  • Describe the audience's loneliness concretely: 30s–60s, married, single posted away, retired, "worries you can't tell anyone". If you want a legitimate confiding product, such as human listeners paid by the minute or an AI companion subscription, you can borrow this copy and audience targeting directly.

How to acquire users: start with store search (keywords plus localized fields), then buy Apple Search Ads on terms like "悩み相談", "話し相手" and "既婚者 友達". Fortune-telling and confiding products can use Japan's affiliate platforms with pay-per-signup.

Timing: no rush. This category has existed for over a decade, so it's not a window opportunity. If you build a legitimate confiding product, any time works; what matters is whether the acquisition cost pencils out.

What would show I'm wrong: if ココハナ's ratings climb over the next month or two, one-star reviews drop, and it holds a top-20 rank, then its users have real retention and aren't just riding decoys and new-account momentum. The value of this shell would be bigger than estimated here. Conversely, if it drops off the chart or gets pulled after the negative reviews pile up, then reappears under a new name, that confirms this is a re-skinning business.

Cocohana (ios_6799612431) research report

Date 2026-11-06. Data: our appstore database (jp store, daily since 2026-10-28), iTunes lookup, web search (Jina). Inferences are marked 「推断」.

One line

Cocohana is a Japanese 「adult worry bulletin board」-disguised pay-per-message chat app (point-based 出会い系). It ranks #13–22 on Japan's Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, driven not by user count but by a small number of middle-aged and older male payers with high spend: each message costs ¥250, and reviews say some users spent over ¥50k in a month. The operator is a small Ikebukuro company registered only 2024 years ago, whose core business is Google and search ad agency work. The playbook is old in Japan; Cocohana's novelty is the 'worry counseling' wrapper and its store keyword tactics.

1. Basic data

  • Listed: 2026-09-27; developer ARMS Inc., with this as the only app under the account (iTunes lookup, artistId 6799612433). Current version 1.1 (2026-10-25). Age rating 17+, categories Lifestyle + Social Networking.
  • Charted only in Japan (appstore database; after aggregating all storefronts, only the jp store remains).
  • jp Lifestyle Top Grossing: 10-28 #17 → 11-01 #13 → 11-04 #22 → 11-06 #15 (app_day). Never charted on Top Free.
  • Rating count: 10-28 was 24,11-06, 34,7 days later it added 9, averaging about 1 a day, no acceleration (app_day). iTunes shows an average of 4.5.
  • Chart neighbors at the same time: #14 Kasual (14,827 ratings), #16 Wakoo (566), #17 Melrose (614). Cocohana has only 34 ratings yet ranks alongside these, which suggests its revenue comes from a very small group of users.

2. What it actually is (payment mechanics)

  • The store description reads: "Anonymous confession board + 1-on-1 chat + Find (search by avatar, nearby, age) + Likes." It also says: "This app is not intended as a matchmaking service." But the second half of the description is stuffed with dating search terms: "であいけい", "デアイケイ", "まっちんぐ", "こいかつ", "人妻・主婦", "既婚者だけど…", "近所で気軽に会える飲み友達", "熟年・シニア", "アラフィフ" (from the iTunes lookup description).
  • A hidden second store title: The en-US localization of the same app is titled 「新しい友だちとリアルマッチングする出会い系チャット_ココハナ」 (iTunes lookup lang=en_us, and the apps.apple.com ?l=en-US page). The Japan store's search also indexes the en-US localization, so this is an ASO move: the Japanese main title looks respectable (worry counseling), while the secondary localization targets 「出会い系」「マッチング」 search terms.
  • Pricing: free to download, pay per point. In-app purchase tiers are ¥1,500 / ¥3,000 / ¥5,000 / ¥8,000 / ¥10,000 / ¥15,000 (datingappnotes.com, 2026-10-22). A dating review blogger who signed up measured 1P = ¥10, sending one message costs 25P (¥250), and 「リミット解除」 costs 2,000P (¥20k). He also said that right after signing up he got a flood of private messages from attractive women, conversations went nowhere, suspected to be サクラ (operator-planted decoys) (hibana.rgr.jp/kokohana, 2026-10-31).
  • User review evidence (sakura-killer.com/apps/1403, aggregating 31 App Store reviews): "Used it for 1 months and paid over ~¥50K… and got ignored" "Paid ¥1500 and got charged double…" "Image-attached explicit pictures arrive, probably sakura (fake accounts)" "The trial membership claims points won't decrease, but…" "Not free. Scam ads." This site estimates the "sakura ratio" (fake review share) of the store reviews at 64% (high).
  • Review pattern: in our database, 26 of the 30 reviews from 9-30 to 11-03 are five-star, almost one a day, and they all repeat the same templated line: "just saying your workplace relationship worries out loud helps" (appstore.review). The five-stars follow the "worry counseling" persona, while the one-stars complain about "paywall / shills." That fits the pattern of paid positive reviews (inference).
  • Operator: the specified commercial transaction law page lists "Arms Co., Ltd. (株式会社アームズ)", with Rumi Endo as the person responsible for operations, address Ikebukuro 2-73-5, Toshima-ku, Tokyo, telecommunications business notification A-06-21946, and [email protected] (repeated by hibana). The site c0c0hana.com displays a "Opposite-sex introduction business notified" badge, yet the App description says it is not an opposite-sex introduction business, and hibana found no acceptance number. The two contradict each other.
    • Same-address 株式会社アームズ: the official site arm-s.com lists registration in 2024-06-24 and capital of ¥2M, with business in Google Ads / display ads / Apple Search Ads agency work; baseconnect classifies it as an 「インターネット広告代理店」 (internet ad agency). The same address also hosts arms-web.co.jp, whose privacy policy says 「マッチングサイトの運営事業」 (operating a matching site), with representative 狩俣龍一. It is reasonable to infer that a small ad-buying company in Ikebukuro runs both 出会い and matching sites (inferred; whether the two websites belong to the same legal entity is unverified).

Conclusion: this is a very crowded, old category; Cocohana invented nothing new.

4. Growth tactics (where users come from)

  1. Store search + ASO keyword tactics (strong evidence): The en-US localization hides the 「出会い系チャット」「リアルマッチング」 titles; the description is packed with hiragana and katakana dating terms (「であいけい」「まっちんぐ」), explicitly written for people who 'can't help searching on impulse'. It picked the Lifestyle category over the fiercely competitive Social category, so reaching grossing rank #15 needed a lower revenue threshold (inferred).
  2. Apple Search Ads / Google Ads (inferred, indirect evidence): The operator's core business is Apple Search Ads and Google Ads agency work (arm-s.com); a one-star review says 「詐欺広告」 (2026-10-11), which suggests some users came in through ads. Our Meta ad library didn't find this app or similar apps' advertisers (we only track a named list of products; not finding them doesn't mean they didn't advertise).
  3. Affiliate offers / 案件 (inferred): A hibana article mentions 「案件情報では届出なし」; in Japan's affiliate industry, 「案件」 refers to promotional offers on ASP platforms, suggesting Cocohana may have run pay-per-install or pay-per-signup offers on affiliate networks. datingappnotes.com published a very positive write-up 3 weeks after launch, which looks like paid placement or SEO content (inferred).
  4. Arranged positive reviews (inferred): About one five-star review a day, with homogeneous content. The roughly 1 new ratings a day don't match real download rhythms; it looks more like a steady drip to hold the 4.5 rating.
  5. TikTok / X: nothing found. A TikHub search for 「ココハナ お悩み掲示板」 only returns the Shueisha manga magazine of the same name; x-radar finds nothing in the last 60 days.

5. Why it took off

  • Why users come: Japan has many lonely middle-aged and older men (married, posted away from home, retired) who want to chat with women but are embarrassed to download an app openly called 「出会い系」. The name 「大人のお悩み掲示板」 gives them a respectable entrance, while the hidden 「出会い系」 keywords in the store let people actually looking for dates find it.
  • Why they pay: Once you sign up, a 「female」 user approaches you; replies cost ¥250 each, plus ¥20k for 「リミット解除」, so a handful of users can be pulled into spending tens of thousands of yen a month. That's how 34 ratings can put it at grossing rank #15.
  • Why now: About 6 weeks since launch, still in the acquisition and new-account phase, with negative reviews accumulating (one-stars concentrated between 10-30 and 11-01). The typical lifecycle of this kind of app is to earn for a while, then reskin and relaunch under a new account (inferred).

6. Differentiation

Compared with similar products, what's different is only packaging and distribution; the product itself is no different:

  • It uses a 'worry counseling bulletin board' shell rather than 'video call' or '出会い', and explicitly targets 30–60-year-olds, married people, housewives and retirees;
  • The main Japanese title looks respectable, the 出会い system title is hidden in the secondary localization, and search terms are stuffed into the description;
  • It picks the Lifestyle category, where the chart threshold is lower.

This is why it could look like it charted organically: top of the Top Grossing list without looking like a dating app. But the underlying monetization (pay per message, suspected fake chat partners) is the same as the old-school Japanese dating apps like Wakuwaku and Happymail.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Revenue is not public. No media or large X accounts have written about it. The only coverage is from Japanese dating-app review blogs (hibana, sakura-killer, datingappnotes), and it's negative (sakura, i.e. fake profiles). For a serious developer, this category isn't really a "copy the trend" play. It's a mature gray-zone category: in 2026 alone, a batch of new repackaged apps like Carina, MIYABI+, KAKERU, KOHAKU, and Melodrama Bulletin Board were all running. I haven't found any product that directly copies Cocohana yet.

8. What to borrow

  • The legitimate parts: (1) localized duplicate titles and description keywords that cover the terms users actually search; (2) picking a low-competition category to get onto the Top Grossing chart with a low bar; (3) writing precise scenarios for 30–60 lonely people, and the copy is strong.
  • The parts I wouldn't copy: pay-per-message plus fake chat partners carries clear legal and platform risk. Japan's dating-service regulation law requires anyone offering introduction services between sexes to file with the Public Safety Commission, and Apple's review will pull misleading apps.

9. Uncertain

  • Actual monthly revenue (I haven't verified the threshold for ranking #15 on the Japanese Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. My guess is it's in the range of several million yen per month);
  • Whether they're running Apple Search Ads or affiliate ads. There's only indirect evidence so far;
  • Whether the chat partners are fake profiles run by the operator. It rests only on review bloggers and user comments, with no hard proof;
  • Whether Arms Co., Ltd. (arm-s.com, an ad agency) and arms-web.co.jp (the matchmaking site operator) are the same legal entity, and whether the same team has launched similar apps under other developer accounts.
