A Threads post with 200k views, and a cloud map that spreads out: how Japanese dog-walking app Walka hit the Health & Fitness charts

What it is A dog-walking app: the clouds on the map part as you and your dog walk the route, and the dog turns into a trading card that gets stronger the more you walk. Meet another dog on the road and you can swap cards by scanning QR codes, with the whole family sharing one record.

Why it took off It takes the "walk to paint the map" mechanic that's trending in Japan and applies it to dog owners who have to go out every day. Each walk produces a card for your dog and a cloud map, both pretty enough to share. An official account's Threads post spread through the pet crowd, and Taiwanese users kept reposting it.

BHow you could follow Don't be the second Walka in Japan. Bring the "fog map + dog cards + QR card swaps + family subscription" combo to English, Korean and other markets, cover Android (which it lacks), and get users through your own official Threads / Instagram pet accounts by posting that image of a dog walking on the map while the clouds clear.

B grade: the playbook is clear and nearly free, and few people know it yet. But Walka hasn't proven it makes money (third-party estimates put monthly revenue under $5K), its growth so far rests on a single post, and Japan already has a crowd of local dog-walking apps.Chatter in small circles

Walka is a dog-walking app built by an independent developer in Japan. The clouds on the map only part as you and your dog walk the route, and the dog becomes a trading card that gets stronger over time; meet other dogs on the road and you can swap cards by scanning QR codes. When it launched in August almost nobody knew about it. In early November the official Threads account posted something that got 202k views, Taiwan's pet community picked it up, and within a week it climbed from #98 to #13 on Japan's free Health & Fitness chart, and to #4 in Taiwan. The numbers are still small, with only 75 ratings worldwide, but it shows something: a proven old mechanic, aimed at people who have to go outside every day, with every use producing an image worth sharing, can gather users at zero cost. Below: what it is, where the users come from, where the money comes from, who's competing, and whether you can follow.

An account with 125 followers, one post with 200k views

On Nov 5, the @walka_app account on Threads posted a short video with just one line of text: 「愛犬との散歩が楽しくなるアプリ🚶🐶」(an app that makes walking your dog fun). The video shows a dog's photo moving step by step across a map, leaving footprints behind it, with the fog lifting from everywhere it passes. The account had only 125 followers at the time. As of Nov 6, the post had 202K views, 1.3K likes and 124 reposts (Threads page, 11-06). The developer replied under their own post with 「ここからDLできます」(you can download it from here) and attached the App Store link.

The comments under the post are the kind this category wants: "わー!愛犬の写真がとことこ歩いてるのすごく可愛いです💕" (Wow, the photo of my dog trotting along the map is so cute); "愛用させていただいてます!!" (I've been using it!!); and someone saying it reminded them of a dog-raising game on the DS. One person said, "When I walk my dog I want to watch the dog, not my phone." The developer replied personally: tap once when you leave, no need to look at the phone, and check the route when you get back.

A week before the October 27 post, the same account had posted an introduction: "I'm developing a dog-walking app... I want to hear from users, so tell me in the replies what features you want." That post got just two likes.

What it is

When you open it, the map is covered in clouds. Once you start a walk, the clouds on either side of your path clear. Inside Japan, it also calculates an "exploration rate" by municipality and sends a reminder at every 1%, 5% and 10% milestone. When you finish, you get a "today's line", distance, duration, new distance covered, and one-tap logging for poop and pee.

Layered on top is a full set of progression and collection features: each dog has a level and XP, and becomes an "愛犬トレカ" (dog trading card) that gets stronger the more you walk. There are 100 collectible items, 55 titles, 16 seasonal badges, and monthly and annual summary cards. Its smartest offline social feature: when you meet another dog owner on a walk, you show each other QR codes to swap cards. The card only shows the items you choose, with no name, address or location. There's also family sharing: everyone who walks the dog is logged to the same record, and you can send a family member who walked the dog a "ありがとう" (thank you).

It's made by Hiroki Minaga, whose TikTok bio reads "田舎暮らし 限界エンジニア" (country-living, overworked engineer). He previously built an app called LifeMap, with the same "unlock the places you walk on a map" mechanic, which almost nobody used (about 1 ratings). Walka applies the same map mechanic to people who own dogs.

Since launching in Aug 17, he has shipped 5 major versions in about two and a half months (1.0 through Nov 4 to 1.4.2), and has addressed most of the feature requests in the reviews. In September someone said "It would be nice if it could log poop and pee," and it was added. In November 1 someone gave it 3 stars and said, "We have two at home, I wish we could go out together," and the version from Nov 4 supports walking multiple dogs at once.

Where the money comes from

The core features are free, and there are three paid tiers (App Store page, 11-06):

ProjectPricingItem
Walka+ subscription¥500/month, ¥5,000/yearMap themes, walk analytics, family sharing, dog #3 onward (up to 5 dogs), flash and gold-foil card finishes, membership ID card
Tip in-app purchases¥300 / ¥1,000 / ¥2,000"Bone", "Toy", "Dog house"
Ads—Google ads, non-personalized

The most notable piece is the family subscription: "If anyone in the household subscribes to Walka+, the others in the same family can use it too," which fits households where family members take turns walking the dog.

Revenue is still unclear. It isn't on the grossing charts, and third-party estimates put global monthly revenue under $5K and monthly downloads under 5K (appstoretracker, estimated, unverified).

The numbers: from #98 to #13 in a week

  • Japan Health & Fitness free chart: 10-31 #98,11-05 #13,11-06 #17 (appstoretracker).
  • Taiwan Health & Fitness free chart: 11-02 #10,11-06 #4; Hong Kong #24.
  • Rating count: Japan 29 (11-01) → 53 (11-04) → 68 (11-06); Taiwan rose from 11-03 to 0 to 6. 75 worldwide, +7 over the past 46,11-06 days, +19 in a single day (App Store storefronts, 11-06). Average rating about 4.5.

The two days of sharp jumps (11-04 and 11-06) line up with the Threads post timing.

Where users come from

Almost all of it comes from the pet communities on Threads and Instagram. There's no sign of paid spend:

  • The official Threads account posting on its own: the post with 202k views was the main driver. In November 6 it posted a Korean version too.
  • Taiwan pet crowd picks it up: Taiwanese users repost it with "推推" and "超級萌". A shiba inu account posts a reel on Instagram: "Today I found a fun dog-walking app, WALKA… the fog just melts away like magic." The official account then posts in Traditional Chinese: "Didn't expect so many Taiwanese friends to download and use Walka." They added Traditional Chinese 1.4.1, which caught the wave.
  • Word of mouth from Japanese users: some posted "最近开始用了" (started using it recently), and others shared replays of their dog walking, cut out from photos. One said "めっちゃ笑いました" (I laughed so hard). Someone asked in the comments whether there's an Android version. There isn't yet.
  • Indie devs on TikTok and Instagram: one TikTok account with only 21 followers, one video in Aug 28 hit 55K views, then a post every two or three days, mostly a few hundred views. Cost is close to zero, hits are luck.
  • Paid acquisition: no ads for it show up in the Meta Ad Library, and it had zero mentions on X over 90 days. No media coverage (not finding them doesn't mean there was no spend; whether the Taiwan reposts involved any partnership is also unverified).

The source of the spread is the product itself: every walk produces a card for your dog, a cloud map that clears, and a replay of your dog walking on the map. For dog owners, all of this is content about "my kid", and they naturally want to share it.

Who it's competing with

ProductScaleHow Walka differs
PlainWalk (散歩で白地図を描く)823 ratings in Japan, launched 8-15, #7 on the Health & Fitness free chart (11-06)Launched the same week with the same "walk to paint the blank map" idea, but not targeted at any audience and more minimalist; its volume is 10 times Walka's
おさんぽびより614 ratings in Japan, launched 7-14, claims 10k cumulative downloadsDog-specific weather and walk index (whether the pavement is too hot for paws, UV levels), on both iOS and Android; also promoted on Threads
Fog of World (世界の霧)2,114 ratings in Japan and 3,121 in the US, launched 2012 years agoThe forefather of fog-map apps, a paid tool for travelers, with no pets and no social features
FogOfDog1 ratings in the US, launched 6-10Nearly identical "dog + fog map" concept, one-time purchase at $4.99, deliberately no quests or points, and no Japanese localization, so almost no traction
Petcle Log136 ratings in JapanDog walks, with poop logging traded for points; the motivation is earning points
わんぽ(うんちコンパス)SmallPoop logging and walk division of labor, also promoted on Threads with "愛犬の散歩アプリ"
ALKOO "with わんこ" mode (NAVITIME)ALKOO has 6,321 ratings in JapanA pet mode added to a major pedometer app, more of a utility

"Dog walk log" is crowded, and "fog map" is a decade-old concept. People have even built "dog + fog map." Walka's edge is bundling three things: fog map, pet card collecting, offline card swaps and family sharing, all wrapped in cute Japanese styling. FogOfDog does the same concept without collecting or social features, and it has barely any traction. It's the best counterexample.

The other side needs to be clear too: Walka's traffic is one tenth of the generic PlainWalk. "Dogs" as a hook may not be stronger for acquisition. Its advantage lies elsewhere: dog owners have to go out once or twice a day, so they don't need extra motivation to walk. And people are willing to spend on their own dog, so there's room for family subscriptions (inference).

If it were you

B. The playbook is clear, cheap and copyable, but Walka hasn't proven it can make money yet, and nobody knows how many users stay once one post's buzz fades. Building a second Walka in Japan isn't worth it: Japan already has a string of indie dog-walking apps, all fighting for the same people on Threads. What's worth doing is taking it outside Japan, or building the platforms it skipped.

Who it suits: 1–2 people who can build iOS and Android solo, with lots of dog owners around them; who can draw cute illustration and card art; whose native language is a market where many people own dogs and Walka hasn't seriously worked (English, Korean, Traditional Chinese for Taiwan, German).

Who it doesn't suit: people who want a fast start through paid acquisition (ARPU ¥500/month, subscriptions alone can't fund ads, inference); people who can't make art "good enough to share" (this kind of product spreads only through its visuals); people who just want a clean dog-walk tracker, since that lane is already full.

How to build it: keep Walka's skeleton: fog map + dog card collecting + QR card swaps + family sharing. Swap the map layer for local administrative divisions (by block or ZIP in the US, by dong in Korea, by li in Taiwan) to count territory claimed. That's something Walka doesn't have outside Japan. Start with Android, or ship both platforms at once: Walka is iOS-only, and people in reviews and under Threads posts keep asking for Android. Keep its monetization: free base, subscriptions sell looks, analytics and family sharing; don't lock the core behind a paywall.

How to get users: pet communities on Threads and Instagram, with the official account posting itself. The creative is the visual: your dog's photo walking on the map with clouds parting behind it, plus one line of copy. Put the link in the first comment yourself, and reply to every comment in the local language. Find a few mid-sized pet accounts (breed accounts like Shiba Inu or Corgi) and trade premium membership for one reel. Make the QR card swap smooth: it's an offline acquisition channel, and anyone who wants a card has to install the app first.

Deadline: no hard deadline, but Walka is already adding Korean and Traditional Chinese, and its solo developer shipped 5 versions in two and a half months. If you want the English or Korean market, aim to launch before spring 2027 (dog-walking season).

Misread it: ① At the end of November, Walka dropped off the Japan and Taiwan Health & Fitness top 50, and its rating growth fell back to single digits per day. That means it was a one-post spike, not real demand. ② Your official account posted for a month, and no single post got past a few tens of thousands of views. That means the visuals weren't shareable, or the pet crowd in those markets isn't on Threads. ③ Users stuck around, but almost nobody subscribed. People are happy to play, but they won't pay for the look and the analytics, so it runs on ads alone.

One line

A Japanese indie developer (Hiroki Minaga) took the old fog-of-war mechanic, where clouds part on the map as you walk, and built it specifically for dog walkers, layering on "collectible dog trading cards (トレカ) + QR card swaps during walks + family sharing." In early November it picked up traction from one post on the official Threads account (202K views) and reposts in Taiwan's Threads pet community. Volume is still small (75 ratings globally), so it's at the stage of "just noticed by a small circle."

1. Basics

  • Developer Hiroki Minaga, an individual developer (TikTok bio: "rural living, marginal engineer"). His account also has LifeMap (2025-12, which turns your life into a map, using the same map-unlock idea, about 1 ratings) and YORUMI (bookkeeping for night-shift workers, 2026-09). Walka takes LifeMap's map mechanic, swaps in a different audience (people who own dogs), and rebuilds it as a product. (iTunes lookup artistId 1823423020)
  • Launched 2026-08-17, with very fast iteration: 1.0 → 1.4.2 (2026-11-04). Major updates added, in order: トレカ / dog-friend connections / municipal territory-claim rate / Korean, walk diary / widgets / Traditional Chinese, family sharing / walking several dogs at once. Requests raised in reviews (multiple dogs, territory, poop logging) were built in later versions. (App Store release notes, recent_reviews)
  • Monetization: free base + Walka+ subscription ¥500/month, ¥5,000/year (themes, analytics, family sharing, from the 3nd dog on, premium トレカ looks, membership ID card), plus tip in-app purchases (ほね ¥300, おもちゃ ¥1,000, ドッグハウス ¥2,000), and non-personalized Google ads. (App Store in-app purchase list, store description)
  • Revenue signal: not on the top grossing chart; appstoretracker estimates global monthly revenue at under $5K and monthly downloads under 5K (estimate, unverified).

2. Growth data

  • Ratings (our app_day database): JP 29 (11/01) → 35 → 40 → 53 (11/04) → 68 (11/06); TW 0 (11/03) → 2 → 3 → 6; HK 0 → 1. Global total ratings 75, +46,11/06 in the last 7 days, +19 on the single best day.
  • Charts (appstoretracker): Japan Health & Fitness free chart 10/31 #98 → 11/05 #13 → 11/06 #17; Taiwan Health & Fitness free chart 11/02 #10, 11/06 #4; Hong Kong #24.
  • The traction timing is clear: from 11/01 the JP rating began climbing daily, with two jumps on 11/04 and 11/06, matching the timing of the Threads posts below.

3. Where users come from (growth tactics)

Takeaway: "dog-walk logging" is crowded, and "fog maps" are an old concept. Someone has even done dog + fog map (FogOfDog). What sets Walka apart is bundling three things: fog maps (open-rate by Japanese municipality) + pet collection and progression (trading cards, levels, 100 kinds of collectibles, titles) + offline social (scan QR codes to swap cards when you meet other walkers, family sharing and "thank you" notes), all packaged in the Japanese "kawaii" style.

5. Why it took off

  1. Riding Japan's "walk-to-paint-the-map" wave: PlainWalk launched at the same time, hit #7 after 7 days with 555 ratings, so the demand is real. Walka narrowed it to the group with the most daily frequency: dog owners who must go out 1–2 times a day, so they need no extra motivation to walk.
  2. "Cute + visual" content built for short-form platforms: clouds clearing on the map, your own dog's card, the cutout dog walking in the replay. These are instantly readable and feature your own pet, which makes them naturally shareable in pet communities on Threads and IG. The post that reached 202k views is the proof.
  3. The Threads platform: Japanese and Taiwanese pet communities on Threads are very active, and posts from small accounts can get recommended to 200k views. Walka's official account had only 125 followers yet hit that scale. Shipping Traditional Chinese on time and having the developer reply in Chinese caught the Taiwan traffic (#4 in TW Health & Fitness).
  4. Retention design: a weekly goal (miss 1 days and your streak breaks), levels, seasonal badges, monthly and yearly recaps, and family sharing are all built to get people opening it daily. Average rating is 4.5, and user feedback is mostly requests for more features, not complaints.
  5. Fast iteration as a solo developer: 5 major versions in two and a half months. Requests from reviews were shipped quickly (multiple dogs, open-rate, poop logging), and the developer replies to users directly on Threads.

6. Differentiation, and whether it's really why it grew

The differentiation is "a fog map made for dog owners" + "pet collectible cards with offline card-swapping social" + "family sharing." This differentiation is why it got traction, but what drives it isn't the feature list. It's that every walk produces a picture worth sharing (the map, the card, the replay), and that's where the content spread comes from. FogOfDog built the same concept without collection, social, or localization, and got almost no traction, so it works as a negative control. Still, compared with PlainWalk, Walka's absolute numbers are an order of magnitude smaller, which suggests the "dog" angle may not acquire users better than generic map-painting. The upside is greater willingness to pay and more room for family subscriptions.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: circulating in small circles. The only signal is one post with 200k views in the Threads/IG pet community. Revenue isn't public, there's no press coverage, and nobody on X has mentioned it.
  • Copycats: none have directly copied Walka yet. The same niche has parallel projects like わんぽ (in development) and FogOfDog (earlier).

8. Takeaways

  • Take a generic mechanic that's already been validated (fog maps / map-painting) and aim it at a vertical audience that has to do the activity every day (dog walking), then add the emotional hook of that audience (their own pet, turned into cards).
  • Offline social via QR card-swapping drives its own growth: you meet someone on a walk, and they have to install the app to swap cards.
  • Family subscriptions (one person pays, the whole family uses it) fit the scenario of a household taking turns walking the dog.
  • Cold start on Threads: the official account posts short videos, links go in the bio, and replies come in local languages (Traditional Chinese, Korean). Cost is nearly zero.

9. Uncertain

  • Whether the viral Threads post was organic or paid (Threads ads or creator partnerships) is unverified. Whether the Taiwan reshares involved any partnerships is also unverified.
  • Subscription conversion and actual revenue are unclear (not on the bestseller charts; third-party estimate is <$5K/month).
  • iOS only. The Japanese municipality open-rate feature only exists within Japan, so its appeal drops outside the country.
  • Volume is still small (75 ratings). Whether it can hold on after the post's buzz fades needs another 1–2 weeks of observation.
