Fajr Alarm - FJR · Ahmed Elmeligi

A Cairo product manager who hits snooze all the time built an alarm clock you can't turn off without photographing your prayer mat: what got FJR into the Egypt charts

What it is An iPhone alarm that rings at local Fajr (dawn prayer) time, even on silent, and can only be turned off by photographing your prayer mat, a made bed, or a washed sink for wudu. It's a paid subscription.

Why it took off The Cairo founder posted a personal LinkedIn story about 'I keep missing Fajr'; his Egyptian network shared it. Egypt's lifestyle charts have a very low bar: with about twenty ratings and a few subscriptions, it reached the top 10 Top Free and the top 30 Top Grossing.

CHow you could follow it Don't build another English version; over forty have appeared in a year on this track. If you're in a Muslim-majority country, build a local-language Android version. Solve the 'can't wake up' problem thoroughly first, then use FJR's founder-story-plus-personal-network playbook to push your home country's category charts, and launch before Ramadan 2027.

Grade C: the need is real and people will pay, but there are over forty similar apps since AlarmKit; in the US and UK TikTok channels Just Pray and Prayr already hold the space. FJR itself took off through the founder's personal network and Egypt's low-bar charts, and its scale is small. The worth-learning part is the cold-start playbook, and copying the app itself isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

FJR is a Fajr (Islamic dawn prayer) alarm: it calculates prayer times for your city each night, rings even on silent, and can only be turned off by photographing your prayer mat, a made bed, or a washed sink for wudu. Launched 28 2026, it reached #4 on Egypt's App Store Lifestyle Top Free and #24 Top Grossing by 6. But it has only 24 ratings worldwide, 21 of them from Egypt. This piece explains how it got there, and why this track is no longer a good place to build another one the same way.

One LinkedIn post

On Oct 15, 2026, Ahmed Elmeligi from Cairo posted a long LinkedIn post that opened with: "I kept telling myself I just needed more discipline. Turns out, I needed a better system."

He is a Group Product Manager at Bokra, an Egyptian fintech company. He previously led product at MaxAB and has also worked at ecobee and VTS. In the post he says he rarely posts on LinkedIn, and this one hit close to home: for some weeks he got up every morning to do his Morning Ritual, and during those weeks he was very productive. Other days it was "sleep another 5 minutes, then another 5," and he woke up with the sun already up. His conclusion: to make a habit stick, don't rely on willpower alone; build a system. So he built FJR. "If it helps even one person do their morning ritual on time, I've won." The closing line: "FJR is now live on the iOS App Store."

He had 1,356 followers at the time, mostly in Cairo. The next day, the first serious review on the Egypt store came in (3 stars, 10-16). It said the experience was great, but the alarm sometimes went off two hours late, and the user had to reinstall the app every day.

What it is

  • Auto-scheduling: On setup, it asks a few questions about your routine, then calculates your daily Fajr time from your location and recalculates it every night.
  • Photo to dismiss: When the alarm rings, you can swipe it away, but it comes back after 5 seconds. The only way to stop it is to complete the task you chose: a photo of your prayer mat, your made bed, or your wudu basin. The photo is uploaded to the backend, where a vision model decides pass or fail (per the privacy policy).
  • Breaks through silent mode: It uses AlarmKit, which iOS 26 opened up. On supported iPhones, it still rings with silent mode or Focus on.
  • Streak tracking and anti-delete: at 4 a.m., when you want to delete the app, you can't.
  • Pricing: Free trial, then subscription. In the US store it's $4.99/month or $19.99/year. In the Egypt store, local pricing is EGP 49.99/month or EGP 399.99/year, about US$1 and US$8 (App Store, 11-06).

The landing page at fjr.app is very product-manager-minded. Two timelines sit side by side, comparing "the same Fajr morning." On the left, 4:48 snooze, 5:20 snooze again, 8:30 wake up late, "Gym? Maybe tomorrow." On the right, 4:52 photo of the prayer mat, 5:05 pray on time, 5:25 read a few pages of the Quran, 6:30 go to the gym. The headline: "Three steps to your barakah-filled mornings." It sells not just faith but the discipline and productivity urban professionals want.

How it got on the charts

The chart trend lines up with the post (Egypt Lifestyle chart; the 10-27 point comes from AppWinners, the rest from daily App Store charts):

DateTop FreeTop Grossing

Where the users came from, the only traces I can find are these:

  1. The founder's LinkedIn post, confirmed.
  2. Word of mouth in Egyptian circles, likely but without direct evidence (inferred). The Egypt reviews all sound local. One 5-star review, 11-03, is written in Egyptian Arabic: "ربنا ينشره عنك بين الناس" (may God spread it among people for you). The developer replied to each review within a day or two, including the Arabic ones. Most likely it spread through coworkers, WhatsApp groups, and mosque circles.
  3. Prompted rating: The 10-29 version 1.0.3 release notes say "Clearer rate-FJR prompt," which shows the rating prompt when the user is happy.
  4. Store search: The title uses the big keyword "Fajr Alarm," with the subtitle "Wake for prayer · No snooze." But only English is supported, so it gets little traffic from Arabic search (inferred).

I found no trace on TikTok, X, Reddit, Product Hunt, or in the media. 11-05 It went from charting in 2 country to 12 countries (Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Tunisia, and others), but in those countries its rating is basically 0, and it ranks well below #40 in Lifestyle. Those small-market category charts can be reached with a few downloads, so this doesn't count as multi-country traction.

One more key piece of context: the Egypt Lifestyle chart has a low bar. On 11-06, the Egypt Lifestyle Top Grossing ranks 20 through 30 included Xiaomi smart-home apps, Wyze-type tools, and a few small social apps launched this year. FJR sat at #24, probably from only a handful of subscriptions per day (estimate). Downloads are probably in the tens to low hundreds per day (estimate), based on the rating growth.

Who it's competing with

A lot. After iOS 26 opened AlarmKit in September 2025, third-party alarm apps could break through silent mode like system alarms for the first time. An alarm that's hard to switch off became possible on iPhone. Since 2026, more than 40 alarm apps with "Fajr" in the name have launched. FJR is one of the later ones.

Photographing the prayer mat or the wudu basin is nearly standard across this group. FJR's extras are the onboarding questionnaire, delete protection, and local Egyptian pricing. It charted not because the product is different, but because the founder and his circle are in Egypt, and the Egypt Lifestyle chart is easy to climb.

What users say

4.7 stars, but the real problem has already surfaced. 11-04 one 3-star Egyptian-Arabic review: "The idea and the app are great, but the alarm doesn't wake people up. It's like a WhatsApp notification. You only notice it if you're already awake, and it doesn't keep ringing." 10-16 That same review also says you have to reinstall every day. AlarmKit only works on newer systems and supported models. On older iPhones it falls back to an ordinary notification. For an alarm app, this is the most damaging kind of criticism. Whether retention drops because of it isn't clear yet.

If it were you

One judgment: Don't build another English photo-to-dismiss prayer alarm. That lane has produced more than forty entries in a year. What FJR is really worth studying is the cold-start playbook: climb the category chart in a small country where you already have people. The product itself isn't the lesson.

Who it suits: A developer who lives in a Muslim-majority country, has local contacts, speaks the local language, and can make AlarmKit and Android alarms both solid.

Who it doesn't suit: Anyone hoping to win on the "photo of the prayer mat" idea alone, since everyone already has it. Also anyone based in the US or UK who plans to fight Just Pray and Prayr head-on on TikTok.

How to do it: If you do want to enter this category, find the gaps none of them have filled:

  • Languages: FJR is English-only. Versions in Turkish, Indonesian, Urdu, and Bengali would face much less competition in store search (inferred, not checked country by country).
  • Android: Egypt, Indonesia, and Pakistan are all big Android markets. Blink22 has already shown that a million downloads is possible on Android, and Android alarms face fewer system restrictions than on iOS.
  • Make "it actually wakes you" solid first: How to handle older devices and how to make it ring repeatedly. This is the biggest complaint in the current reviews.
  • Pricing: follow FJR's approach and price by local purchasing power, a few dollars a year.

How to get users: Do what FJR did. Tell the story in the founder's own voice, "why I keep missing Fajr," and post it on LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and community groups in your own country. Aim for the top 10 in your local Lifestyle chart. In the app, show the rating prompt at the moment a user wakes up on time. After that, make short "sleepy me vs. awake me" comparison videos on TikTok in the local language. Competitors already do this, and FJR hasn't used this channel yet.

Timing: Ramadan is the biggest traffic window of the year. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in early February (inferred). To catch this wave, launch and collect ratings before January.

What would show you're wrong: Apple or Google adds a system alarm that requires a prayer-time wake-up and a completed task, or a big app like Muslim Pro ships the same feature. Or, after you climb to the top 10 of your local category chart, subscription retention drops within a month, which would mean people were just curious.

Data as of 2026-11-06. FJR's downloads and subscription revenue are not public, so the figures in this article are estimates.

Why Fajr Alarm - FJR (iOS id6800009144) showed up in our scan

Research date 2026-11-06. Data from our appstore database (agent-im machine, database running since 2026-10-28), Apple lookup/RSS, AppWinners, fjr.app, LinkedIn, TikHub, x-radar, and Jina/Exa/Brave search. Inferences are marked 'Inferred'.

Bottom line

FJR is a Fajr (dawn prayer) alarm built on the side by a Cairo product manager (Ahmed Elmeligi, Group Product Manager at Bokra). It uses iOS 26's AlarmKit to break through silent mode, and to turn it off you must photograph your prayer mat, a made bed, or the sink used for wudu, which a vision model verifies. It only broke out in one small pocket: the Egypt App Store Lifestyle charts, where it reached #4 on the free chart and #24 on the Top Grossing chart (2026-11-06). Growth came from the founder's own LinkedIn launch post plus word of mouth in Egyptian circles, and the Egypt Lifestyle chart has a low bar. Functionally it is not far from the forty-plus similar Fajr alarms that appeared in 2026. It is still small: 24–26 global ratings, about 21 of them from Egypt.

1. What the product is

  • Launched 2026-09-28, iPhone only, English only, and it is the only app under the developer account (Apple lookup, developer id1031702658).
  • Features (fjr.app, store description):
    • Automatically calculates the daily Fajr time from your location and recalculates each night;
    • To turn off the alarm you must complete a 'task': photograph a prayer mat, a made bed, or a wudu sink. Photos go to the backend, where a vision model returns pass/fail (privacy policy wording: "the image … is sent to our backend so a vision model can return pass/fail");
    • Streak tracking;
    • 'No easy way out': the app locks, and you can't delete it at 4 a.m.;
    • Uses AlarmKit on newer iPhones, so it rings even with silent and Focus modes on.
  • Pricing: free trial, then subscription. US store $4.99/month, $19.99/year; Egypt store EGP 49.99/month, EGP 399.99/year, local pricing, roughly $1/month, $8/year. Subscriptions are managed with RevenueCat (App Store page, privacy policy).
  • Shipping updates often: 1.0.2 (10-21), 1.0.3 (10-29, adding the 'clearer rate-FJR prompt'), 1.0.4 (10-30, fixing subscription misdetection and daylight saving time).

2. Growth data

Egypt Lifestyle chart ranks (appstore database chart_rank, cc=eg, genre 6012):

DateTop FreeTop GrossingEgypt overall free chart
10-27(AppWinners)63––
10-2821148–
10-299105157
10-301132185
11-021297198
11-05538136
11-06424139
  • Rating count: globally it grew from 14 (10-28) to 24 (11-06); Apple lookup showed 26 ratings that day, averaging 4.7 stars, with 21 from Egypt. Converting ratings to downloads, that suggests a few dozen to one or two hundred downloads a day (inferred).
  • Charted countries went from 2 to 12 on 11-05: the newcomers are Bahrain, Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Tunisia, the British Virgin Islands, Malta and others, all of them outside the top 100 in the Lifestyle chart, and their rating counts are mostly 0. Small stores like these can reach a category chart with a handful of downloads, so don't read it as real traction across several countries.
  • Benchmark: 11-06 The Egypt Lifestyle Top Grossing #20–30 slots include Xiaomi Home, Wyze, and a few social apps launched in 2026. The revenue bar on Egypt Lifestyle is low, so #24 may correspond to only a few subscriptions a day (inferred).

Takeaway: This niche isn't short on products; it's already crowded. After iOS 2025 opened AlarmKit in September 26, third-party alarms could finally break through silent mode like system alarms, and a wave of Fajr alarms appeared in 2026. FJR is one of the later entrants.

4. How users came in (growth levers)

  1. Founder's LinkedIn launch post (confirmed): 2026-10-15 he published a long post: "I kept telling myself I just needed more discipline. Turns out, I needed a better system."
    • The post is a personal story (always hitting snooze and missing Fajr) and explains why he built FJR, ending with "FJR is now live on the iOS App Store".
    • He has 1,356 followers, mostly in Cairo's professional circles: former product lead at MaxAB, currently Group PM at Bokra, and earlier at ecobee and VTS.
    • The timing lines up: AppWinners started tracking it on 10-19, and it rose on the Egypt Lifestyle free chart from #10-27 to #63,10-28 and then to #21,10-29 on 9.
  2. Egyptian circles and word of mouth (highly likely):
    • Egyptian reviews are written in Egyptian Arabic, such as "ربنا ينشره عنك بين الناس" (may God spread it among people) and "ميصحيش حد" (it wakes no one), and the reviewers look like local users;
    • Developers reply to every review within 1–2 days, Arabic replies included;
    • Egypt accounts for about 85% of global ratings (21/24).
    • Inference: it's spreading through LinkedIn, WhatsApp, coworkers and mosque circles. No direct evidence.
  3. Rating prompt (confirmed): 1.0.3's update notes say "Clearer rate-FJR prompt when you want to leave a review", so it asks for a rating at the moment users are happy.
  4. Store search (partial): the title uses the generic keyword "Fajr Alarm", subtitle "Wake for prayer · No snooze". But the metadata is English only, with no Arabic localization, so its reach on Arabic search is limited (inference).
  5. Channels not found:
    • TikTok: searched "fjr app", "fajr alarm", "منبه الفجر", "تطبيق صلاة الفجر". No official FJR account or creator videos found. @fjrapp has 33 followers and 2 videos; not sure it's theirs.
    • X: x-radar found "fjr.app" and "Fajr alarm" each with 60 posts... over the last 0 days.
    • No mentions on Reddit, Product Hunt, or in the press.
    • Ads: no evidence of paid campaigns found, but our ad library only tracks products on our list, so not finding it doesn't mean there were none.
    • By comparison, the same niche's Hisaab, Deeny, Bedless Fajr and Fajry all run TikTok account networks. FJR is almost blank on content channels.

5. Why it took off

  • It picked a small pool it could actually reach: the founder is in Cairo, the social circle is in Egypt, and it priced locally by Egyptian purchasing power (EGP 399.99/year, about $8). Lifestyle charts in Egypt have a low bar: a few dozen acquaintances downloading and a handful of subscriptions can push it into the top 10 overall and the top 30 grossing.
  • Timing: iOS 26's AlarmKit made "a Fajr alarm that rings on silent and can't be dismissed" possible on iPhone for the first time. That's the shared starting point for the whole niche, not something FJR owns.
  • Product-manager polish: the landing page sets "the same Fajr morning: you're snoozing, others are praying, reading Quran, working out" side by side as a timeline. It sells barakah (blessings) and productivity to urban professionals, and it iterates fast and replies to problems. That kept the first wave of acquaintances around and got it 4.7 ratings.
  • Real pain, people will pay: "can't wake up to pray" is a common guilt among Muslims. Among competitors, Just Pray and Prayr have already shown this group will pay a subscription for tools that enforce religious habits.

6. Differentiation

  • Versus Alarmy: Alarmy makes you photograph a reference spot, then photograph the same place to match it. FJR uses a vision model to directly recognize "is this a prayer rug, a bed, a small ablution basin", tied to Fajr times and religious context.
  • Versus other Fajr alarms: photographing a prayer rug or basin is near-standard (Hisaab, Bedless Fajr, Hayat Time and Falah all have it). FJR's extras are just three things: an onboarding questionnaire that schedules alarms around your routine, delete protection, and Egypt-local pricing.
  • Differentiation isn't why it took off. The reason is distribution: the founder's local network, plus Egypt's low-bar charts. It has no presence in the US, UK or Australia, where TikTok drives growth, and its US rating count is basically 0.

7. Visibility

Few people know about it yet:

  • No public revenue; not on TrustMRR;
  • No press or big X accounts covering it, only the founder's own LinkedIn post and auto-scraped pages like AppWinners and apppage.
  • The niche is already crowded, but everyone is copying the shared Alarmy-plus-AlarmKit model, and nobody is copying FJR.

8. What to borrow

  • Religious or habit tools can "climb the category charts from a small home market": a founder story plus LinkedIn/WhatsApp circles for cold start, then local-purchasing-power pricing. In low-barrier countries, category charts are easy to reach top 10, which brings early chart exposure and ratings.
  • Build vertical use cases as new system capabilities appear: AlarmKit plus vision-model verification, applied to "religious duty + waking up", turns a generic alarm into a tool with identity.
  • Unfilled gaps: Arabic localization, TikTok content, an Android version. Egypt has a high share of Android users, and similar apps like Blink22 reached 1M+ downloads mostly on Android.

9. Uncertain

  • Whether the jump to 12 countries on 11-05 came from a concentrated share, a community recommendation, or a small paid push, we can't tell.
  • Actual subscription revenue: the revenue behind its Egypt top-grossing 24 position may be very small.
  • Whether the @fjrapp TikTok account is official.
  • Retention: one 3-star review says the alarm feels like a regular notification and doesn't wake people, and that they have to reinstall it every day. AlarmKit doesn't work on older devices, which may hurt retention.
  • Whether it can expand beyond Egypt: currently almost no volume in the US or Saudi Arabia.
