Watching YouTube "the good ten days" on CarPlay: how CarTV earned money through a crack, and why you shouldn't copy it

What it is An app that mirrors YouTube and the entire iPhone screen onto the CarPlay head unit. In the store it's listed as an M3U/IPTV player, with a free trial followed by a weekly subscription and a $27 lifetime option.

Why it took off iOS 27 opened a door for video on CarPlay, but no automakers had adopted it. It got video onto the car screen first, used an eight-language TikTok account (45.6M views) to drive volume, and picked up users when its main rival APTV was pulled from the App Store by Apple.

DHow you could follow Copying the feature itself isn't recommended. What's worth learning is the playbook: watch for platform capabilities that just opened up before the ecosystem catches up, wrap real selling points in a compliant shell, distribute short videos across multiple languages, and launch a "replacement" the same day a rival goes down. If you really want to go after this demand, focus only on parts Apple can't shut down, like CarPlay audio content or hardware box distribution.

Grade D: it relies on a platform crack that iOS 27.2 has closed and on a one-off rival takedown. Now there are twenty-plus clones, removal could come at any time, and users are asking for refunds en masse. The playbook is worth learning; the product itself isn't worth copying. An iPhone app whose shell says "M3U IPTV Player" collected 24.5k ratings in under three months of launch and reached the top 100 of the overall Top Grossing chart in Saudi Arabia and Turkey. What it really sells is something Apple didn't allow for years: watching video on the car screen. It rode a crack iOS 27 opened, a multilingual TikTok account, and its main rival getting pulled. That crack is now mostly closed. The money is still coming in, and so are refunds and one-star reviews. Below: how it got going, what's still worth learning, and why following it isn't recommended.

"The ten good days it worked"

In Oct 29, a US user left a review for CarTV titled "iOS 27.2 Disabled The App": "After I upgraded my phone it stopped working. Thank god I bought the lifetime version. The ten days it worked were really great."

That same week, hundreds of similar reviews came in every day, in English, Spanish, Thai and Russian. The same message appeared on the car screen: "This car doesn't support video. Sound plays in the car. Watch picture on your phone." One Australian user wrote the most complete account: installed it and tried it, it worked, very good; bought lifetime; a few days later an update, and only sound was left. "If it hadn't worked from the start I wouldn't have much to say."

That's the whole CarTV story: something a lot of people wanted, working for a few weeks, then shut off by the platform.

What it actually is

On the App Store it's called "CarTV - M3U IPTV Player & Cast," first launched in Aug 16, in the Utilities category, free to download with in-app purchases. The first paragraph of the store description reads "a lightweight M3U / M3U8 playlist tool," but the second paragraph gets to the point: "Mirror your entire iPhone screen to the car, any app, even if it has no casting button."

What users actually do with it: while parked, charging, or waiting for kids, open YouTube on the CarPlay screen, or mirror the whole phone screen over. Before this, doing that meant buying a USB-plugged Android box like Ottocast or Carlinkit, costing a hundred or two hundred dollars. CarTV offers a free trial for a set period (a September review says 40 minutes), then $3.99 weekly, $45.99 yearly, or $27 lifetime (US store page, 11-06).

Why September: Apple opened a crack

Starting with iOS 26, Apple allowed video playback on CarPlay via AirPlay while parked; iOS 27 (2026 September) went further, allowing CarPlay apps to play video directly, provided the automaker enables it. MacRumors' September 17 roundup made it clear that no automaker had publicly announced support. The official route was blocked, yet several third-party apps used the new capability to get video onto the car screen.

CarTV timed things precisely: five versions shipped in a row from Sep 2 to 6, and on Sep 5 the official TikTok account posted its first video, "YouTube on CarPlay is finally here," with 898k views. Two weeks later, the English video "Did you know your CarPlay can do THIS?" from Sep 20 reached 6.15M views, and the Spanish version the next day reached 5.09M views and 97k likes.

In developer circles, this was later explained as Apple having fixed a "video streaming loophole" in iOS 27.2. Apple itself never explained it.

Where users come from

One official TikTok account, split by language. @cartv_cast2car has 32k followers, 57 videos, and 45.6M total views (TikHub, 11-06). September 12.1M, October 33.4M. The profile link goes to the App Store, and the bio says "Nobody needs a refund anymore. It'll be ready on iOS 27.2". The content is simple: a car screen with YouTube open, plus one line in the local language: "Did you know CarPlay can do this?" English, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Polish are all covered.

A batch of these looks bought. The Oct 24 "CarTV × CarPlay — more useful features" batch: the Arabic version got 3.79M views and only 3,284 likes, the French version 880k views and 5,000 likes, a like-to-view ratio of just 0.1%–0.6%; the September posts that grew organically ran 0.8%–7.5%. Inference is paid boosting, no direct evidence. Worth noting: the languages of this batch line up exactly with the markets where its rating rose fastest: 11-06 in the past 7 days, Turkey +454, Italy +182, Saudi Arabia +174.

Creator tutorials. In Spanish, @gabrielrdahmen has a mirroring tutorial with 2.14M views. In Vietnam, @remotecartube has 600k. In the US, @roonsgarage has a "Better than APTV" video with 476k, arguing that CarTV goes full screen while others only go half. I couldn't find out whether any of these were paid partnerships.

The week the competitor went down. The main rival, APTV, is an open-source IPTV player (2,929 GitHub stars). Tech media called it "the first app that lets CarPlay play YouTube directly." In October 23 it disappeared from the App Store. Its author wrote on GitHub in October 29 that Apple had notified them the CarPlay video feature had to be fully removed before it could be relisted. In November 1 it came back without video. During this period, TikTok videos in Italy, Brazil, and Vietnam started appearing with the message "APTV is gone, use CarTV" (the Italian one has 85k views). CarTV's daily new ratings went from 10-29 to 154 to 10-30 to 571.

Disguises in the store. It ships in 22 languages, and each storefront gets its own title: "CarTV - M3U IPTV Auto", "影片", "動画", "동영상", "Carro", "авто". The English title takes the search term "IPTV Player", and the description stresses "for passengers only." My guess is that this is half for search and half for getting past review.

Where the money comes from

Try first, buy later, then push lifetime. A US user's review in September sums it up: "It gives you 40 minutes of free trial, unlike other apps that make you subscribe right away, and it has a lifetime option." The release notes for version 1.1.3 (10-14) include the line "after upgrading to lifetime, you'll be reminded to cancel your original Apple subscription." It's actively moving subscribers over to lifetime.

Lifetime prices don't stay fixed: in September, one Canadian review complained the lifetime plan cost C$44, while the India store listed it at just ₹1,100; in late October, someone said they paid $20, and the US store now shows $27.

Revenue isn't public. All we can see is ranking: 11-06 #81 on Saudi Arabia's overall Top Grossing, #97 in Turkey, #3 in Utilities Top Grossing in both countries, and #2 in Vietnam's Utilities Top Grossing. Charting in the top 100 of two countries' overall Top Grossing means people are actually paying. How much, and how much refunds after 27.2 eat into it, you can't tell from the outside.

After 27.2: still climbing, but what's climbing

iOS 27.2 was officially released in October 26 (people were already complaining in reviews during the October beta that it didn't work). Text reviews then spiked to hundreds a day, mostly one-star and "I want a refund." After 10-27, the daily average of reviews sits at only 2.0–2.5.

Oddly, the overall rating didn't drop: the all-store rating went from 10-28's 20,764 up to 11-06's 24,532, and the US store still has 4.51 stars. Three likely reasons: first, the in-app rating prompt, where happy users tap five stars and only unhappy ones bother to write; second, many people haven't upgraded 27.2, and some users say right in their reviews, "just don't upgrade and it still works"; third, the users brought in by the TikTok and APTV wave are still arriving.

The official account says "it'll be better on 27.2," but as of 11-06 the newest build in the store is still the October 23 1.1.6 version, with no fix.

Who it's competing with

Apple's official "Video in car"Built into iOS 26/27Car manufacturers haven't enabled it, so it doesn't workThe day car makers connect with YouTube, third-party apps have no reason to exist

There's also a long tail of copycats: from mid-October to early November, more than twenty launched, including CarCast, CarStream, CarScreen, Screen2Car, CarMirror, and "车机投屏-Car tv". In November 2, one even launched "CarTV: M3U IPTV Player & Cast" with a title almost identical to CarTV's. Most have no ratings yet. People are also piggybacking on the name on Google Play.

What to learn from it

What's worth remembering isn't the product, it's the playbook:

  1. Watch for newly opened platform capabilities that the ecosystem hasn't caught up with. Apple opened CarPlay video, car makers and YouTube hadn't connected yet, and those few weeks were the indie developer's window.
  2. A compliant wrapper can carry the real selling point. The store calls it an "IPTV player," and the short videos only talk about "watching YouTube in the car."
  3. One official account in eight languages. The same footage gets different subtitles, and you add more of whichever market starts to take off.
  4. When a competitor gets pulled, post a "replacement" video the same day.
  5. Lifetime pricing suits tools where the results are obvious at a glance and users fear getting shut down. But the cost is here too: once the feature gets blocked, refunds and one-star reviews arrive in a concentrated burst.

If it were you

D: Understanding its playbook is enough. I don't recommend copying it. It made money by exploiting a gap Apple has already closed, plus a one-time event (APTV being pulled). Entering now means facing features that stopped working after 27.2, more than twenty same-name clones, the constant risk of removal, and a group of users already asking for refunds.

Who it's for: teams already building IPTV or player-type tools, with experience running multilingual TikTok ads. You can file away this playbook ("new capability window + multilingual short video + lifetime pricing") and wait for the next gap.

Who it's not for: anyone who wants to copy a "watch video on CarPlay" app right now. The feature will most likely be impossible to build, and even if you build it, it won't survive the next review. Also anyone who wants long-term subscriptions: these users are buying "while it still works," not long-term value.

How to approach it if you must touch this need: Stay away from what Apple blocks. Only two compliant angles remain: first, legitimate CarPlay audio IPTV, podcasts, and spoken-word content, which Apple allows and which can last long-term; second, affiliate distribution or review content for hardware boxes sold to people who want to watch video in the car. The demand is real, and Apple can't block the boxes.

How to acquire users: Copy its approach: one official TikTok account split by language, starting with the Middle East, Turkey, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The creative is vertical, real-footage "a car screen with some app open."

When to wait: For "CarPlay video," the window has already passed. What's worth waiting for is the next one: the few weeks after the iOS 28 beta (around June 2027), when you see what Apple has opened up again and what the ecosystem hasn't yet connected.

What would prove this read wrong: (1) CarTV ships a video feature that works on 27.2 during November and isn't pulled within a month, which would mean the gap is still open and the window to follow it is longer than I think; (2) Apple doesn't remove CarTV or CarDash, and their daily new ratings stay above 300 at the end of November; (3) a car maker (or YouTube) officially integrates in-car video through Apple, and apps like CarTV are allowed to remain as compliant players. At that point it becomes a normal category worth reassessing. Conversely, if CarTV gets pulled the way APTV did, that confirms this read was right.

CarTV - M3U IPTV Player & Cast —— why it worked

Bottom line

CarTV nominally is an M3U/IPTV player, but what it really sells is "watching YouTube / video / full-screen iPhone mirroring on the CarPlay head unit". Apple did not allow this for years, and hardware boxes (Ottocast, Carlinkit) cost $100–200. iOS 27 (2026-09) opened a gap for CarPlay video, and CarTV, APTV and a few other apps used it (the developers' own description: a "loophole" Apple later closed) to push video to the car. CarTV then built volume through an official TikTok account + creator tutorials (official account 57 videos, 45.6M views). 10-23 The main rival, APTV, was pulled from the App Store and returned without video features, so CarTV picked up its users. On iOS 27.2 (10-26) the feature mostly stopped working on new systems, but users who haven't upgraded are still downloading and paying, and downloads have not fallen. Essentially it is time-window arbitrage in a platform policy gap, with the risks of removal from the store and heavy refunds.

US Utilities Top Free #24–25 (appstore; Apple's web page 2026-11-06).
  • Third-party estimate: mwm.ai says 2.5M+ cumulative downloads, 250k within 30 days (unverified, third-party model estimate).
  • Prices (US store page 2026-11-06): Weekly $3.99, Yearly $45.99, Lifetime $27.00; free trial by duration (reviews say 40 minutes or "10–20 hours").
  • Star rating and written reviews don't match: the US star rating (4.51) for 10-28 has slowly slipped from 4.538 (appstore app_snapshot), yet in the 1,433 written reviews we collected, 1-star reviews number 618, and since 10-27 the daily average has only been 2.0–2.5 (appstore review). Our inference: the star rating mostly comes from the in-app rating prompt, where happy users tap 5 stars on a whim, while the written reviews come from people who paid and then couldn't use the app after upgrading to 27.2.

2. Why it took off

(1) Timing: iOS 27 opened the CarPlay video gap

  • From iOS 26, Apple allowed "playing video over AirPlay onto CarPlay while parked"; iOS 27 (2026-09) went further, allowing CarPlay apps to browse and play video directly, but it requires the car maker to enable it, and "no car maker has publicly announced support so far" (Gadget Hacks, MacRumors 2026-09-17).
  • The official path still didn't work in practice, yet third-party apps used the new capability to push video to the car. APTV was reported as "the first app to let you watch YouTube directly on CarPlay" (daily.dev repost). CarTV's release cadence lines up with this: 9-02 to 9-06 saw 1.0.4–1.0.8 releases, and its official TikTok posted "YouTube on CarPlay is finally here" (App Store version history; TikTok @cartv_cast2car, 9-05).
  • The demand itself is large: "watching YouTube / Netflix in the car" used to require $100+ hardware boxes, and Ottocast has run "Play2Video" ads on Meta continuously (metaads, 2025-08 to 2026-10-26 active). CarTV is free to download with a $27 lifetime option, an order of magnitude cheaper.

(2) Rival APTV pulled, CarTV takes over

  • APTV(Kimentanm/aptv,GitHub 2,929 星的开源 M3U 播放器)10-23 从 App Store 消失。作者 10-29 在 GitHub 写:「接 Apple 通知,APTV 目前已被下架,必须完全移除当前的 CarPlay 视频功能后,才可以重新上架。」(GitHub issue #194)。11-01 回到商店,是 1.5.13 版,分级从 4+ 变成 17+,浏览器和 CarPlay 视频都没了(onejailbreak、autoevolution 10-28)。
  • TikTok quickly filled with "APTV is gone, use CarTV" content: Italy @dottzivago 10-25 (85k views), Brazil @oficialgabrielrock 10-30, Vietnam @nguyenquan2310 11-02 and 11-04 (TikHub search 2026-11-06). CarTV's daily rating gain rose from 10-29 at 154 to 571 at 10-30 (appstore).
  • Scale comparison: over the same period APTV (surviving App Store id6476621657) gained only 38–141 ratings per day, while CarTV gained 3–5 times that (appstore app_day, 10-29~11-06).

(3) Acquisition: official TikTok account + creator tutorials, multilingual

  • Official account @cartv_cast2car: 32k followers, 57 videos, 45.6M total views (September 12.1M, October 33.4M). Bio reads "Nobody needs a refund anymore. It'll be ready on iOS 27.2", profile links directly to the App Store (TikHub 2026-11-06).
  • Hits: 9-20 English 6.15M views, 9-21 Spanish 5.08M, 10-16 Spanish 3.68M, 10-16 Arabic 1.95M (200k likes), 10-18 Spanish 2.37M (130k likes).
  • Suspected paid boosting (inferred): 10-14 and 10-23–24 a batch of feature videos distributed by language, where plays and likes don't match. Arabic 3.79M views with only 3,284 likes, Turkish 3.07M views with only 1,597 likes, Spanish 3.39M views with 4,207 likes, a like-to-view ratio around 0.1%; organic hits usually run 2–15%. The languages of these videos (Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese) match the markets where its ratings grew fastest (Turkey 7 days +454, Saudi Arabia +174, Italy +182). Our TikTok ad library only covers Europe and doesn't track it, so this can't be confirmed directly.
  • Creators: @gabrielrdahmen (Spanish mirroring tutorial, 2.14M views), @roonsgarage ("Better than APTV", 476k), @kyara.allen (380k), @techkurt (190k), Vietnam @remotecartube (600k), and others (TikHub). Whether there were partnership fees is unverified.
  • Community: the official site links Telegram, Discord, r/CarTV, WhatsApp and a QQ group (cartv.app).
  • Share-to-unlock (inferred viral mechanic): a US review mentions being "redirected to a prompt to share this app" while watching Paramount+ (US store page reviews).
  • Paid ads: Meta / TikTok (Europe) / Google ad libraries have no record of it (not on the tracking list, which doesn't mean it didn't advertise).

(4) Why people are willing to pay

  • There is real need and no cheap substitute: "FINALLY!!!!! Finally an app where I can actually watch my videos in my car" (GB 10-23), "It's great to finally be able to watch videos on CarPlay!!" (US 10-29). Typical use is while parked, charging, or picking up kids (the description also pushes "keep kids entertained with cartoons for 40 minutes while charging").
  • Try first, then push lifetime: free for a set period, then it pitches the $27 lifetime plan. Many reviews say "bought lifetime". One US review says the developer pushed the lifetime tier "RIGHT before iOS 27.2 came out" (US store page). The update note for 1.1.3 (10-14) reads "Improved reminders after upgrading to lifetime membership to help you manage and cancel your existing Apple subscription", showing it was converting subscribers to lifetime at the time.

(5) Why it kept growing after 27.2

  • iOS 27.2 10-26 released (itechify). From 10-27 written reviews surged to 100+ per day, many saying "This car doesn't support video" and demanding refunds (appstore review).
  • Rating growth didn't drop: after 10-27 it still ran 300–600 per day (appstore). Inferred: first, many users haven't upgraded to 27.2; second, traffic from TikTok and APTV's removal is still flowing; third, some features (IPTV audio, phone playback, browser) still work. Some users in reviews say they kept the features by downgrading iOS.

4. Copycats (many, and very new)

2026-09 later same-category listings (App Store app list, by US name):

  • Same-name clones: "CarTV: M3U IPTV Player & Cast" (Avaniben Sardhara, 11-02, same name exactly), "Car TV - IPTV M3U Video Player" (Vandana Merja, 10-30,94 rating), "Car TV: Smart M3U IPTV Player" (ALLEY, 51,10-16,119 rating), "CarTVPro: Playlist Player" (Turkey's BUBISOFT, 10-07).
  • Renamed look-alikes: CarCast (two publishers), CarStream, CarScreen (two publishers), CarVideo, AutoPlay: Car TV & Video, Screen2Car, CarMirror, OD CarMirror, CarPlayIPTV, Car Player (Nanjing Omi), "车机投屏-Car tv" and more. From mid-October to early November, 20 of them launched, and most have no ratings yet.
  • Google Play has name-riders too: "Car Cast : Car TV Player" (10-08,6,734 installs), "Car TV M3U IPTV Player" (10-29) (googleplay).
  • On TikTok, new accounts like @car_cinema_app are posting tutorials for similar apps (11-04, 11-05).

5. Differentiation

  • Compared with APTV and CarDash, the features are nearly identical (M3U + browser + full-screen mirroring to the car display). CarTV's differences come down to three things: full screen instead of half (@roonsgarage: "CarTV puts YouTube full screen… not just half"), navigation with YouTube in split view, and frequent updates (16 versions in two and a half months).
  • What really made it take off was distribution and timing, not the product: first, it got into cars right when iOS 27 opened the door; second, it shipped in 22 languages with multilingual official TikTok accounts; third, it stayed listed while APTV was pulled; fourth, by framing itself as an "IPTV player" it lowered the odds of review scrutiny (inference).
  • Compared with hardware boxes, the real difference is zero hardware and a price an order of magnitude lower, which is why users are willing to pay.

6. Visibility

  • Revenue isn't public (no results on TrustMRR, and no founder revenue posts found). Tech media has only covered APTV (autoevolution, onejailbreak); no dedicated CarTV article turned up. There are Japanese YouTube video introductions (YouTube search results).
  • But it's loud on TikTok (official account with 45.6M views, creator single posts with 2M+), and mwm.ai tags it as a 2026-year "Legend"-tier new app. Competitors clearly noticed: over twenty clones since October.
  • Verdict: it's spreading in small circles. Consumer reach is already wide, and many app builders are copying it; media and revenue aren't public yet.

7. What others can learn

  • Watch for platforms newly opening capabilities (this time, iOS 27 CarPlay video). The window for standalone apps is the weeks before the official ecosystem catches up (automakers and YouTube haven't yet).
  • Use a compliant shell (IPTV / M3U player) to carry the real selling point; put player search terms in the title and description, and state the actual selling point in short videos.
  • A rival getting pulled is the biggest traffic event: immediately push "XX alternative" on TikTok.
  • Pricing: free trial by duration, then push a one-time lifetime price. Fits tools where results are instantly visible and users fear getting blocked; the cost is that when a block hits, refunds and bad reviews arrive together.

8. Uncertain

  • What interface CarTV uses to put video on the car display, and whether it breaks the rules: a developer says Apple fixed a "streaming video vulnerability" in 27.2, but Apple hasn't explained. Whether CarTV will be pulled like APTV is unknown.
  • The official account says "It'll be ready on iOS 27.2", but as of 11-06 the latest store version is still 10-23 1.1.6, with no fixed release.
  • Whether TikTok is paid to boost: this is only an inference from the like-to-view ratio; the ad libraries show no evidence. Whether creators are paid is unverified.
  • Refund scale and revenue: the bestseller chart put it in the top 100 overall in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, but after 27.2 Apple refunds may eat part of it; this can't be verified.
  • One review says the app connects to 7+ domains in 1,500 days (privacy concern); unverified.
  • The real team behind Lyntra and its relation to growing.inc are unverified; the website lists a San Jose address, but the QQ group and Chinese-language app suggest a Chinese-speaking team (inference).
