Two 20-year-old students' "political Tinder": not earning a cent, yet ranked above Le Monde
What it is A "political Tinder" built for the French 2027 presidential election: swipe left or right on anonymous policy cards, and only after swiping do you see who proposed each one and where it came from. It finally ranks which candidate you're closest to. Free, no ads, no data collection.
Why it took off Elyze, which hit 2M downloads in 2022, didn't come back this cycle, leaving the spot open. Two students made "zero data, every item sourced" the selling point, took a press kit from local papers up to national media, and climbed to #1 in France's News category, where the bar is low.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another one in France. The most useful thing to take away is the playbook: find countries with a national election 2027 years out, no strong official tool, and a previous hit app that has stopped updating. Launch 6–7 months before voting, make neutrality and sourcing part of the product and of the press release, and start with local papers. Suits people who want work and visibility, not people who want income.

presid is a voter-matching app for France's 2027 presidential election: swipe policy cards, and only after swiping do you see who proposed each one, and it finally ranks which candidate you're closest to. Two weeks after launch it reached #1 in the French App Store News free chart, and the team says it had 70k downloads in under two months. Its mechanic is easy for anyone to copy, and about a dozen people have. What's worth watching is how it got picked out from a pile of identical apps, and why this business barely makes any money.
Sep 16, #1 in News
In Sep 2026 16, a news app that had been live for only three weeks hit #1 in the France App Store's Top Free News chart, ahead of X, Le Monde and franceinfo. Its developer is Louis Coudière, 20 years old, a student at emlyon Business School in Lyon (per a team press release, as relayed by Planète Grandes Écoles 09-22).
The day before, the local Tribune de Lyon had profiled him: from Saint-Genis-Laval, and 2027 was the first year he could vote in a presidential election. He noticed his classmates all knew "who they'd never vote for" but couldn't say what each candidate actually proposed. So he and his friend Victor Parcollet built presid. He told the reporter by phone: "There's no server behind presid. We have no database at all." Downloads were at 9,000, and he said he hoped to reach 100k by year end.
What it actually is
Open it and you get a card with a single claim, like "raise teacher salaries," "use drones to monitor wildfires," or "hold a referendum on retirement reform." No names, photos, or parties are shown. Swipe right to agree, left to disagree, or pick "love it" or "hate it." Only afterward does it reveal who supports and who opposes, with the source and date attached: campaign platforms, public statements, or National Assembly voting records.
After twenty-odd cards, you see a top-three podium, from Mélenchon to Le Pen, plus some lesser-known candidates, and below that, where you'd sit in the parliamentary hemicycle. The store page says it covers 22 issues, 389 cards, and 326 sourced claims (App Store, 11-06).
Completely free, no ads, no account, and the legal notice says it "generates no revenue." This is deliberate, as explained below.
Why this one and not the dozen others
Only presid has real traction on the App Store: 420 ratings in the French store. Second place, Citoyen, has 2027 ratings with 194, and it takes a different approach (you read the positions, you don't swipe cards). Votons has 13 ratings, and Politeo has 3 (App Store, 11-06). Three things separate them.
One: the spot was empty. Elyze's last update was in November 2022. It didn't return this cycle, and today it's still at #63 in the News free chart on old reputation alone (11-06). In autumn 2026, candidates were announcing one after another, and Minutes 20 reported 30 people were hunting for endorsement signatures, with more and more people "not knowing who to vote for." Reporters needed a "2027 political Tinder," and presid got the name.
Second, it does the opposite of Elyze's failures. Elyze was called out by Le Monde in 2022 for collecting user data, being fed fake proposals, and showing bias. presid turned each of those around: no accounts, no servers, scoring runs on the phone; no candidate gets a stance without a source; candidates with fewer than 5 sourced positions are kept out of the ranking; ties are broken randomly on each phone so no single lean goes out nationwide; no photos on the cards; sharing is switched off automatically the day before and on election day, per election law article L49. Write that into a press release and you have a ready-made headline: "An app that tells you who you're closest to, with no stance of its own." 20 Minutes sets it against Néogora, whose founder is a Republican city councillor, and calls presid the clean one.
3. Pitch the press. Victor says he handles media and political outreach; Louis used to run a small agency doing app promo (Oise Hebdo 09-22). They built a proper press kit, then went outlet by outlet: Tribune de Lyon (09-15) → Planète Grandes Écoles, Oise Hebdo (09-22) → Europe 1 (early October) → 20 Minutes national piece (10-18) → Le Progrès, two articles (10-26, 10-27) → Radio SCOOP in Lyon (11-02). "20-year-old, first vote, no investors, no subsidies" is a story local papers love. Votons also ran in La Dépêche and 20 Minutes, but there was no follow-up, and it stalled there.
Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| National and local media | Coverage above ran without a break from mid-September to early November | Main driver |
| News category chart and search | The top ten free News apps in France are older ones like X, Reddit, BFM and Le Monde, and a few hundred daily downloads can crack the top 5 (estimated). The store title directly contains the phrase "présidentielle 2027" | Main driver, and "ranked above Le Monde" became a news story in itself |
| TikTok | Official account @presid.app has 43k followers and 2.67M likes, but now only 7 videos remain, each with a few hundred to four thousand views, which doesn't match, so videos may have been deleted (unverified). A passerby @mathelden posted a video about it that reached 176k views 10-19 | Medium |
| In-product sharing | "Compare with friends" shares results via QR code; daily question push; alerts when the top spot changes | Yes, effect not visible |
| Ads | No paid acquisition found; an app that makes no money has no reason to buy ads | Probably none (inferred) |
Where it stands now
Declining, but not collapsed. News free chart 10-28, 10-29 2,10-30 onward 3,11-03 onward 4,11-06 6. Ratings grew from 10-28 ratings at 325 to 422 at 11-06, with 78 added in the last 7 days, running at 1 to 20 a day (App Store). Team-reported numbers: 9,000 in two weeks, under 27k in three weeks, 600 to 1,000 times a day during September, and over 70k on the App Store in under two months (Victor's LinkedIn, late October). All self-reported and unverifiable, but the ratio matches the rating count. The Android version only launched in late October, showing 500+ on Google Play.
What people in the reviews are asking for is consistent:
- "I found out I don't always agree with the person I thought I agreed with." (5 stars, 10-20). This is the category's best selling point.
- "If education matters more to me than Europe, the result should reflect that." (5 stars, 10-24). They want issues weighted.
- "Grouping similar claims together so we can pick our favorite, like minimum wage." (3 stars, 10-27; another 9-25 review with 4 stars says the same)
- "Questions repeat, the same topic comes back worded differently." (4 stars, 11-02). "Once you've answered them all there are no new questions" (3 stars, 10-19).
- "No matter how you answer, the same few candidates come out on top." "8B euros in savings, agree or disagree? How would you save it? No explanation." (1 stars, 10-23)
- "AI-generated content gets only 4 stars from me." (4 star, 9-17). The team did use Claude to write code, and also used it to check daily whether cards were out of date (Tribune de Lyon).
Where the money comes from: none
presid makes no money, and its credibility rests on that: no data collection, no ads, no ties to any party. An app that tells people who to vote for loses its neutrality the moment it starts selling something. Politeo locks its results behind a €3.99 in-app purchase, with 3 ratings.
The category's life cycle is also fixed: the first round of French voting is in April 2027, and after the second round demand drops to zero and stays there for five years. Elyze went through the same arc: 2M downloads, then it stopped updating, and its co-founder joined the government spokesperson's office (Le Point 2022-06). For the people who build it, what you get is reputation, a résumé line and contacts, not income.
Can you ride it?
Copying it in France: too late. presid already holds the "2027 political Tinder" spot. Swipe Your President launched mid-October and even copied the selling point of dated, sourced claims for every position, with 7 ratings. Media won't write about a second one.
Run it in another country. The window is real and it follows a pattern: 'I don't know who to vote for' demand spikes 6 to 9 months before each election. Whoever catches the 'XX version of Tinder' label gets the press bump. Counting from fixed terms, 2027 parliamentary elections in Spain, Italy and Poland, plus Argentina's presidential vote, fall in this range (dates not checked one by one). But first check whether each country already has an official tool: Germany has the Federal Agency for Civic Education's Wahl-O-Mat, the Netherlands has StemWijzer, Switzerland has smartvote, and newcomers barely have room in those markets.
Do the parts it got wrong. The reviews already list the gaps: weight issues by importance, compare similar positions side by side, explain how a policy would actually be carried out, and keep things to play after the quiz is finished. But those are upgrades inside one app, not a different business.
What you can take away is the playbook, not the product. In categories where people need to trust you, make 'neutral, zero data, sourced' both a product feature and the press release headline. Push for charts in low-barrier categories, then announce 'ranked above a major outlet' as news. Write a founder story and a press kit, and let local papers run it one after another.
If it were you
Verdict: C. The playbook is worth learning, but copying the business isn't. It proves a two-person student team with zero budget can use PR and a niche category chart to break into a national election in a big country. But the business itself has no revenue, runs once every five years, and drops to zero after April.
Who it suits: students and young teams who want a portfolio piece they can cite in a CV or a funding pitch, like 'featured in national media, hit #1 in the chart'; civic tech people, media folks, and project teams with grant money; people who can already write press releases and work with journalists.
Who it doesn't suit: indie devs who want to make money from it; people who won't call journalists personally and are waiting for organic store traffic; anyone in a country that already has an official matching tool.
How to build it: pick a country with an election in 2027 years, weak official tools, and a previous 'political Tinder' that stopped updating. Content comes first: every position links to its original source and date, with a hard threshold (only positions backed by several sourced statements make the ranking), no data collection, local computation, and sharing switched off automatically during the pre-election blackout. Build the policy weighting and side-by-side comparison the reviews asked for into version one. Use AI to help organize the platforms and to check daily whether positions have changed, but state on the page which parts were human-verified, since 'AI-written' alone loses points.
How to get users: write the press kit first (who the founder is, why they built it, neutrality rules listed one by one, launch numbers). Start with local papers in the founder's city and keep going one article at a time, then pitch election columns at national papers. In the store listing, claim the 'election year + election' keywords and file under News. Once you're in the top five, post the ranking screenshot as news again.
When to launch: go live 6 to 7 months before voting day. presid went on the store 7 and a half months before the first round and reached #1 two weeks later. Anyone launching 4 months before voting day or later is too late, because the media has already picked its people.
What would mean you read it wrong: ① presid rose back into the news chart's top 3 during the 2027 1 March candidate debates, with ratings adding dozens a day. So the peak before the election was far bigger than the autumn one, French demand hasn't been used up, and late arrivals can still get a slice; ② after the election the team found ways to make money (media licensing, embeds for newspapers, institutional buyers), so this category isn't just a one-off piece; ③ on the flip side, if the country you picked had nobody building in it 5 months before the vote and no journalist had written about it, it may not be an empty spot. There may simply be no demand there.

Two 20-year-old emlyon business school students (Louis Coudière writes the code, Victor Parcollet handles media and party relations) built 2027 a 'political Tinder' for the French presidential election. You swipe left or right on policy cards, and only after you finish does it tell you who proposed each one and rank the candidate closest to you. Completely free, no ads, no account, no server, and no revenue.
1. Data

- French News free chart: the team says it reached #1 on 2026-09-16, ahead of X, Le Monde and franceinfo (press release cited by Planète Grandes Écoles 2026-09-22). Snapshots from appfigures, appfollow and similarweb also put it in the French News free top 2 to top 4. Our library (appstore.app_day, fr): 10-28, 10-29 #2 → 10-30 to 11-02 #3 → 11-03 to 11-05 #4 → 11-06 #6. Slowly declining.

- Download figures the team published (none verified): 9,000 in two weeks (Tribune de Lyon 2026-09-15); 27,000 in under three weeks (Oise Hebdo 2026-09-22); '600–1,000 times a day in recent weeks' (Tribune de Lyon); over 70,000 on the App Store in under two months (Victor Parcollet's LinkedIn post announcing the Android release, around late October). The ratio of ratings to downloads is about 0.6%, which is plausible.
- Android version: Google Play com.louis.coudiere.presid. AppBrain shows 500+ downloads. It only launched in late October, so volume is still small.
- Revenue: zero, and deliberately so. The legal notice on presid.app says: 'non-professional publication, free, no ads, generates no revenue.'
II. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (fr ratings, lookup 2026-11-06) | How presid differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ELYZE(ligne8 Studio) | iOS/Android | 2021-12-29 | 4,607 ratings, 3.62 stars; over 2022M downloads in 2 years (France Inter, ICI); last update 2022-11-16 | The original 2022 political Tinder. It was criticized at the time for data collection, fake proposals being injected, and biased questions (Le Monde 2022-01-18). Co-founder later joined the government spokesperson's office (Le Point 2022-06). It has not been updated for this election and still sits at #63 in News free on past reputation (library, 11-06). presid is built as the opposite of these flaws: no data collection, every position sourced, and the team stays out of politics. |
| Citoyen 2027(Vassili De Rosen) | iOS/Android | 2026-02-27 | 194 ratings, 4.78 stars; #26 in News free (library, 11-06) | Focuses on browsing candidates' proposals by topic (information and understanding), not swipe-card matching. | Référendum Citoyen | iOS | 2026-06-09 | 306 ratings, 3.53 stars; #22 in News free | Covers referendums and petitions. Doesn't do candidate matching. |
| Votons (Eden Wisniewski, two people from Toulouse) | iOS + votons-2027.fr | 2026-06-18 | 13 reviews | Also measures closeness with swipe cards, launched two and a half months earlier. Featured in La Dépêche (2026-10-12) and 20 Minutes, but it didn't take off. |
| Politeo(APPMEUP) | iOS | 2026-07-16 | 3 reviews | Nearly the same swipe-card gameplay, with an in-app purchase for 3.99 euro results. Didn't take off. |
| Quizz du Berger – Vote 2027 | iOS + web | 2026-07-01 | 9 reviews | A questionnaire with AI wording. The website's SEO targets 'Elyze alternative'. |
| Néogora | iOS | 2026-09-15 | 15 reviews | Scores candidates 0–5 and runs head-to-head matchups. Requires an account and collects data. The founder is a Republican (LR) city councillor (20 Minutes). |
| Swipe Your President 2027(120K) | iOS + web + TikTok | 2026-10-11 | 7 ratings; TikTok @swipeyourpresident has 10.5k followers and 167k likes | Launched 6 weeks later, with the slogan 'every candidate position backed by a dated quote'. Nearly copies presid's 'everything sourced' selling point. Its approach: 40 questions, 7 dimensions. |
| ARÈNE – Présidentielle 2027 | iOS | 2026-10-25 | 11 reviews | A weekly compass of 25 new calls, two months behind the curve |
| 2027 (Une Jolie Idee), Pouls (poll aggregator), Le Vote Français | iOS | 2026-04 to 09 | Each has fewer than 20 ratings. | Related but different approach |
| web questionnaires: Jevote.info (open source, since 2017), Candidator, Boussole électorale (made by political scientists), monvote2027.fr, Komune comparator, ÉlyséeScope, solutiondemocratique, Pulse France | Web | most are old-timers | no comparable numbers | they're questionnaires, not native App swipe cards, and they don't chart in App Store news |
| party-run apps (Renaissance's "Attal président", Le Figaro 2026-06-04) | iOS/Android | 2026-06 | — | campaign tools, not neutral |
3. Where the users come from (ranked by strength of evidence)
- Press releases plus national and local media coverage in rotation (confirmed, the main driver). The team put together a formal dossier de presse (Planète Grandes Écoles cited its figures and rankings). Timeline: Tribune de Lyon (09-15) → Planète Grandes Écoles and Oise Hebdo (09-22) → Europe 1 "Sur les réseaux" feature (around early October) → La Dépêche's similar piece (10-12) → 20 Minutes national story, with presid as the lead (10-18) → two Le Progrès pieces (10-26/27) → Lyon Éco et Culture → Radio SCOOP Lyon (11-02, which also posted to TikTok and Instagram). Victor Parcollet has publicly said he handles "liaising with media and parties". Louis previously ran an "agency doing App promotion" (Oise Hebdo), so he knows how to do PR. The story template works well: "20 years old, first-time voter, no investors, no subsidies, zero data", which local papers love to run.
- The store category-chart flywheel (confirmed). The French News free chart has a low bar: the top ten are all older apps like X, Reddit, BFM and Le Monde. A new app getting a few hundred downloads a day can climb into the top 5. Once it reaches #1 or #2, chart exposure plus search traffic for "présidentielle 2027" and "élection" bring in organic downloads. The store title is literally "présidentielle 2027", which is grabbing that keyword.
- TikTok (presence confirmed, moderate impact). The official account @presid.app has 43k followers and 2.67M likes, but only 7 videos remain, each getting 700 to 4,000 views (TikHub 2026-11-06). Followers, likes and existing videos don't line up, so videos may have been deleted or this may be an old account renamed (not verified). Another account, @victor_presid_, has 423 followers and 35 photo posts, with a top post at 22k views (10-08). Creator and passerby videos: @mathelden (16k followers) tagged @presid.app in a video with 10-19 at 176k views and 23k likes; @hustle.wearr had one with 3,674 views. Some organic spread, but not a breakout.
- In-app share links (feature confirmed, effect not verified). "Carnet de proches" comes with a QR code so you can compare results with friends (store update notes; Tribune de Lyon says "locally generated matching card codes for comparing with friends"). A daily "question of the day" push and alerts when the #1 match changes bring people back. French electoral law, article L49, bans sharing the day before and on election day, and the product switches sharing off automatically.
- emlyon alumni and LinkedIn (confirmed, small scale). Victor's LinkedIn post got 52 likes; both founders hold roles in emlyon student associations and clubs.
- Paid acquisition: no evidence found. The product's stance is "no revenue, no ads", so paid acquisition doesn't really fit. Our ad library only tracks products on our list, and the agent-im server kept refusing SSH connections this round, so I couldn't check metaads or tiktokads. Best write-up: "unverified, most likely not spent".
4. Why it made the list
- Timing: the first round of voting was Apr 2027 18. In autumn 2026, candidates announced one after another (20 Minutes says 30 people were already collecting endorsement signatures), and the "I don't know who to vote for" need began to surface. 2022 Elyze had just proved this demand could pull 2M downloads in one go, and this round the original is absent (no updates since 2022-11).
- Claimed the "Elyze successor" narrative: media called it "2027's political Tinder" and "Elyze's upgraded version" (Planète Grandes Écoles, Tribune de Lyon). Reporters needed a person to write about, and these two 20-year-old students fit the bill.
- The differentiation hits Elyze's pain points: Elyze was criticized in 2022 for collecting data, being flooded with fake proposals, and having bias. presid does the reverse: no accounts, no server connection (except the daily question, which requires user consent), every card cites its source (platform, dated statements, parliamentary voting records), a candidate only gets ranked once there are at least 5 verifiable positions, ties are broken randomly on each phone, avatars and parties don't appear on cards, and it claims over 400 automated tests. All of this became a "neutrality" story media were happy to write, and 20 Minutes contrasted it with Néogora, which has partisan ties.
- Execution speed: the app was written in a few weeks with Claude assisting on the code, and Claude is also used to check daily whether cards have gone stale (Tribune de Lyon). Two weeks later came a major update: mini-games ("who said this?", "true or false?", with ranks from intern up to president, 30 off), candidates added as news broke (Branco, Polony), and more questions. There's always something new in the content, which gives people a reason to come back and gives the press something to cover.
- Good category choice: placing it in News rather than Education means a lower bar and more exposure, and ranking ahead of Le Monde is itself news.
5. Differentiation, and whether it's why it took off
The gameplay itself (swipe cards, reveal the author after swiping, rank by closeness) has no differentiation: Elyze did exactly this in 2022, and Votons and Politeo launched earlier with the same format. The real differentiators are two. (1) Credibility from an "evidence architecture plus zero data", which for an app about voting is the top requirement, and the reason media were willing to vouch for it. (2) Gamification and ongoing upkeep (mini-games, daily questions, comparing with friends). So differentiation is part of the reason: it's what made reporters pick presid out of a dozen similar apps and turn it into a story. But most of the volume came from "timing + PR + a low bar on the news category chart". Other apps didn't take off mainly because nobody pushed them, not because the product was worse. Latecomers like Swipe Your President already copy the "every position has a source" pitch.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: French national and local media wrote a fair amount (20 Minutes, Europe 1, Le Progrès and La Dépêche ran similar pieces), but there's no public revenue (it doesn't make any), and nobody outside France or on X is talking about it (searching presid in x-radar returns nothing). Call it "buzzing in a small circle", where the circle is French election coverage.
- Copycats: Swipe Your President 2027 (launched 10-11, copy nearly lifted from "every position has a source", more active on TikTok than presid), ARÈNE (10-25). Votons, Politeo and Néogora are same-period peers, not copies.
7. What's worth borrowing
- Election matchers are a recurring, reliable need: each national election opens a window 6–9 months out. The original apps often don't keep going, so whoever takes up the "XX version of Tinder" narrative captures the media boost. It can be copied for elections in other countries (Germany, Italy, Brazil, South Korea, US midterms) and for local elections.
- In categories where trust matters, make "neutral + zero data + sources" a product feature and a press-release headline at the same time.
- Chase low-bar store categories (national News charts), then issue another press round treating "beating a major outlet in the rankings" as the news.
- A young founder's personal story plus a ready-made press kit, with local papers running pieces one after another, at zero cost.
- Use AI to build and maintain content at the same time, so two students can run 400 cards with sources.
8. What's still uncertain
- The 70,000 downloads figure is the team's own claim and unverified. The official TikTok account's followers and likes don't match its existing videos, and the reason is unclear.
- I can't tell which channel contributed most during the few days in early September when it reached #1 (our database only started on 10-28).
- It doesn't make money, and it's unclear how it continues after the election (2027-05). The team says it wants to "keep existing after the election", but gave no concrete plan.
- The ad library lookup failed (server SSH kept resetting), so paid acquisition is inference, not verified.
