A "singing community" hit #11 on Japan's Lifestyle chart: Viva - Sing isn't selling singing

What it is: an app wrapped in a singing community, with coin-based payments and video/voice chat with foreign women. Nine in ten of its ratings come from Japan, and it has also charted on Top Grossing Lifestyle in several Middle East stores.

Why it took off: after Apple pulled a large batch of video chat apps in February, this type of product switched to hobby-community covers and listed under one-time accounts. Viva ran a concentrated paid push in Japan in late October, and used the low bar of the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart to chart.

EHow you could follow: not recommended. The only parts worth taking are the compliant ones: pick a category with a low bar for exposure, and use "push the free chart first, then the grossing chart" to spot someone running a concentrated campaign.

E grade: the whole playbook is swapping features after review, which Apple's October 16 guideline update 2.5.19 explicitly bans, with removal and account bans as penalties. It also relies on host agencies, web top-ups and bulk accounts, which indie developers can't access, and Japan already has more than a dozen similar apps. Few people know about it yet

On the store page, Viva - Sing presents itself as an English singing community where users upload covers and learn vocal techniques. But none of the Japanese reviews mention singing. They talk about "lots of cute girls" and "calls are good". It is one of several disguised shells that emerged after Apple's February cleanup of video chat apps. In late October it ran a push in Japan and climbed to #11 on the free Lifestyle chart and #45 on the grossing chart. This piece explains what it actually is, where the traffic came from, and why this path isn't one to take.

A five-star review that has nothing to do with singing

In Oct 202627, on the Japan App Store, a user gave Viva - Sing five stars with a one-word title, "神" ("god"), and the body read:

There are people of all kinds of nationalities, and everyone has a great figure, so I recommend it ✨️

The next day, two more came in: "Lots of cute people, and you can chat with all kinds of people" ("色んな人と交流できる 可愛い人が多い"); Oct 30: "Lots of cute girls" ("かわいい子多い"). Going back further, from late September to early October, there were also "Calls are great!" ("通話がいい!") and "It's fun, since it's rare to get to talk with people overseas" ("海外の方と話せる機会はなかなかないので楽しい"), plus a few too explicit to translate.

From Sep 26 to Oct 30, the Japan store had 66 reviews in total, and not one of them mentions singing (App Store Japan reviews).

On Oct 30, this all-English app named "Sing" hit #11 on the Japan Lifestyle free chart. Ahead of it were national-level apps like Japan Post, ENEOS and ahamo, and right behind it at #12 was FamilyMart. The same day it was #142 on the Japan overall free chart.

What it actually is

Put the pieces together and the real picture shows: a coin-based video and voice chat app with foreign women, wrapped in a singing community skin.

  • Store page: the developer is FOSTER LANGLEY, a personal name, and the account has only this one app. Bundle ID com.cgswkl.foster, with a garbled prefix. Category is Lifestyle, age rating is adult, the UI is English only, and the privacy label says "Data Not Collected." Version 1.1.0 shipped Sep 18, with release notes that just say "fix bugs" (App Store API, 11-06).
  • Pricing: 9 tiers of coin packs, ¥150 to ¥15,000 in the Japan store, no subscription. A community for uploading covers that sells ¥15,000 coin packs says it all.
  • The website doesn't match the store: vivasingapp.com describes "Middle East voice chat rooms," badges and combo gifts, and recruits for "Viva Sing Family" guilds via a Hong Kong WhatsApp number. The homepage URL carries pageType=recharge&token=&uid=, which is really the in-app top-up page. Searchable Arabic VIVA announcements say "Recharge via the link, $1 = 7000 coins," which means steering users to web top-ups to bypass Apple's in-app purchase (search snippets, not verified item by item).
  • The "You may also like" list is a whole cluster of similar apps: Yami: Dance Community, Shakky: Dance Chat Community, Bestie, Lida: Private Circle Lounge, Ekko: Handmade Creator Hub, Bobo - GO Chat... The developers are a Vietnamese construction company, a drainage engineering firm, an Indonesian software company, or one-off personal names. Open Bobo and behind the dance-community shell is a diamond-billed 1v1 video feature.

Clues to who's behind it point to a Middle East voice-room platform. A same-named "Viva Sing - غُرف دردشة الحفلة" does exist, sold by Singapore company ASIA SYS CONSULTING PTE. LTD. (registered February 2023), with only 10 ratings on iOS. The new Viva - Sing is charted on the Lifestyle top grossing charts in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Oman, the UAE and Egypt at the same time, most likely an iOS clone from that platform: Middle Eastern users go into voice rooms, Japanese users go into video chat (inference; the link between FOSTER LANGLEY and this company is unverified, and we haven't installed it to confirm whether the inside is 1v1 or live rooms).

Scale

Volume is modest, but its chart positions stand out:

JapanOther
Ratings (11-06)240,4.26 stars; 10-28 is +178,9 over 62 days, peak +19 in a single day (10-30)US 53 (4.85 stars), Saudi Arabia 26, South Korea 14

(App Store regional charts and ratings, 10-28 to 11-06)

The rhythm: it rushed the free chart first, the grossing chart followed two or three days later, then both slid down together. It looks like a batch of newly acquired users came in, started paying, and then paid acquisition stopped or shrank (inference).

11-04 is on the Japan Lifestyle grossing chart, with Badoo at #38 and the age-gap dating app SILK at #46 as neighbors. The bar for grossing in Lifestyle is much lower than in Social: a couple hundred ratings can get you into the top 50. Smaller storefronts like Saudi Arabia and Lebanon are lower still; a few dozen paying users is enough to chart.

Where the traffic comes from

This is not organic traffic. A purely English "singing" app with no Japanese keywords in its name could not reach the top 20 of the free chart through Japanese users searching for it. Nobody on X mentions it, TikTok has only Arabic videos from a Middle Eastern brand account with a few hundred views, and no media has written about it. The most plausible explanation is paid acquisition in Japan, but it doesn't appear in the few ad libraries I could check, and whether the channel is X, TikTok, Meta or an affiliate network can't be seen from outside (inference).

The reviews show signs of manipulation. Lots of short reviews like "Good," "Best," "Nice," "YES YES YES!!" On Oct 20 there is a long review that goes on about "strict identity verification, 24-hour monitoring, very efficient for finding a serious partner," which is dating-app template copy and matches neither singing nor video chat. The US store has 53 ratings at 4.85 stars, with reviews like "Good app" and "Exactly what i wanted" (suspected, unconfirmed).

Why now

The demand has always been there. Paying men in Japan chatting with strangers on video (called "mise-ai" in Japan) is an old category: "掲示板 ビデオ通話 KANADE" was listed 2022 years ago with 6,150 ratings; "ビデオ通話 ソラ" has 4,507 ratings and has hovered around #25 on the Japan Social grossing chart for a long time (App Store Japan, 11-06).

Apple's crackdown pushed the category into disguise. In Feb 2026 6, Apple classed random and anonymous chat as a risk category, and in Feb 24 pulled 100 video chat apps in one batch, including Joi, which reportedly earned $2.59M in the month before removal (Rentian Dianshu, 2026-03-06, citing data from Yindian). Since then these products have switched to hobby-community names like singing, dance, handmade crafts, skiing and stargazing, filed under Lifestyle, and published from one-off developer accounts. Viva is one of the apps from the June to September 2026 wave.

The difference from its batchmates is distribution, not the product. In the same batch of English shells, Lida, Bestie, Renna, Berk: Ski Tracker and Ceno: Stargazing each have only 0 to 3 ratings in Japan. Viva is the only one that actually built volume there. Japan's local competitors take another route: they name themselves "video call" outright and add an excuse (laundry wait, interview practice, ping-pong form), with their categories scattered across Weather, Sports and Business.

Its only selling point is "foreign women" (mentioned 3 times in reviews), while most Japanese competitors feature Japanese women. But that isn't a moat: swap in a new batch of streamers on the backend and it can be copied.

If it were you

Grade E: stay away. There's something to learn about distribution from this business, but the product itself is a gray-area app that violates Apple's rules and survives on a streamer supply chain and disposable accounts. The risk of copying it falls on you.

One-line verdict: Viva climbed the charts on a playbook of "review-passing shell + Japan-store scaling + low-bar category charts," with zero product differentiation. Apple has now explicitly closed that route. 2026 Oct 16 review guideline changes 2.5.19 ban "hidden, dormant, or undocumented features" and switching functionality after approval; violators get pulled and their developer accounts banned (ai-revolution.co.jp, 2026-10-17). Accounts like Viva's, with a personal name and a garbled bundle ID, were built to be disposable and to get banned.

Who it suits: strictly speaking, no one. Only platforms that already have streamer agencies, web top-up channels, bulk developer accounts and ad teams can run this business, such as the Middle East voice-room platform behind it. Indie developers and small teams have none of these.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to earn long-term from a single app. Accounts can be banned at any time, web top-ups that bypass Apple's in-app purchases are already a violation, and the "Data Not Collected" privacy label doesn't hold up. On top of that, more than a dozen similar apps are already running in Japan.

What you can take away (none of this breaks the rules):

  • The bar for category charts varies a lot. Reaching the top 50 in Lifestyle grossing in Japan takes only a couple hundred ratings' worth of volume, and it's even lower in small storefronts like Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. If a legitimate product's category is defensible, choosing the right category can earn it an extra placement.
  • Rushing the free chart first, with the grossing chart following two or three days later, is a rhythm you can use to spot when someone is running a concentrated campaign.
  • A matrix approach of swapping the front end by region (Middle East voice rooms, Japan video) also works for a compliant product.

The bet is wrong if: ① three months after the 2.5.19 rule took effect (mid-January 2027), Viva and most of the Lida, Ekko and Bobo shells are still listed and still charting, showing Apple isn't actually enforcing it and the window for this gray-area approach is longer than expected; ② someone produces evidence that this type of product's monthly in-app purchase revenue can support a small team, and that its developer accounts can avoid bans over the long run.

One line

The store says "singing community" (upload covers, learn vocal techniques, discussion groups). In reality it's a coin-based social disguise app for video and voice chat with foreign women. 90% of users are in Japan, and Japanese reviews say "lots of cute girls", "I like the calls", "people of every nationality have great figures", plus overtly sexual comments. It took off through the disguise-app playbook: pass review with a harmless hobby shell, use one-off individual dev accounts, scale in Japan, then climb the low-barrier Lifestyle grossing charts. The product itself has no differentiation.

Free chart surged first, then Top Grossing followed two or three days later. That rhythm looks like a batch of new users from concentrated acquisition starting to pay.

2. What it actually is: a singing shell with video chat inside

Evidence:

  1. Japanese reviews have nothing to do with singing (appstore library reviews, jp, 2026-09-26 to 10-30, 66 total): "lots of cute girls", "I can talk with all kinds of people, lots of cute ones", "people of many nationalities here, all with great style, recommended", "the calls are good!", "it's rare to get to talk with overseas people, so it's fun", plus explicit comments like "hot", "erotic", "good body, worth getting in". Not one review mentions singing.
  2. The same phrasing appears in reviews of Japanese "video call / show-off" disguise apps: MIYABI+ (video call), Carina video call show-off app, and coco+ video call interview practice all have reviews like "lots of cute girls" and "lots of cute girls and easy to use" (appstore library reviews). This is the fixed pitch of Japanese adult paid video chat.
  3. The website doesn't match the store listing: vivasingapp.com describes "Middle East voice chat rooms", badges, combo gifting, and "Viva Sing Family Recruitment" (guild recruitment via WhatsApp +852-84021662). The homepage URL includes pageType=recharge&token=&uid=&appId=, which looks like the in-app webview top-up page. Arabic VIVA announcements on Facebook / Google say "recharge via link: 1 USD = 7000 coins", meaning users are steered to bypass Apple IAP and top up on the web (from search snippets, not individually verified).
  4. "You may also like" is a whole chain of same-type shells (App Store jp / bz pages, 2026-11-06): Yami: Dance Community, Shakky: Dance Chat Community, Bestie - Livesstream & Chat, Lida: Private Circle Lounge, Flicker: Stream, Call, Chat, Ekko: Handmade Creator Hub, Kazoo - Share Your Beauty, Bobo - GO Chat. Developer names are unrelated companies like DHL ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION JOINT STOCK COMPANY, FLOW TECH DRAINAGE LIMITED, and PT KODE TEKNO PRATA, or one-off personal names. Our existing Bobo report (ios_6811792557) already confirmed Bobo is a "dance community shell + diamond billing 1v1 video".

Relation to Viva Sing proper: the Middle East voice-room app "Viva Sing - غُرف دردشة الحفلة" does exist, iOS 6466260478, seller ASIA SYS CONSULTING PTE. LTD., a Singapore company registered 2023-02. The Android package is com.vivaparty.app, APK about 159MB. TikTok account @vivasing.0 posts Arabic promo videos with a few hundred views (TikHub). That app has only 10 ratings on iOS (sa). The new Viva - Sing shares the name and charts in Lifestyle Top Grossing in sa, lb, om, ae, and eg, so it's most likely a disguise app Viva opened for iOS: Middle East users go to voice rooms, Japanese users go to video chat. However, the store page lists no seller website, so "FOSTER LANGLEY belongs to ASIA SYS" is unverified.

3. Competitors

A. Japanese "video call / show-off" disguise apps (direct competitors, appstore library jp, 2026-11-06)

The naming formula is "video call + an excuse": waiting while doing laundry, ping-pong form, interview practice, running, fitness, pets. Categories are deliberately scattered across weather, sports, business, and lifestyle. Developers are almost all Japanese personal names, with only 1 apps under each account.

5. Why it charted

  1. Demand already exists: paying Japanese men chatting with strangers on video (見せあい) is a long-running category. MIYABI+, Carina, KANADE and ソラ have sat on the social Top Grossing charts at #25–45 for years (appstore DB, jp). Viva sells the same thing, just with "foreign girls": "色んな国籍", "海外の方".
  2. Platform crackdown forced a disguised form: 2026-02-06 Apple listed "random / anonymous chat" as a structural risk, 2-24 and pulled 100 video-chat apps in bulk (人人都是产品经理 2026-03-06). Afterward these products rebranded as hobby communities for singing, dancing, handicrafts, skiing, stargazing and so on, and were filed under Lifestyle. Viva is one of that wave (bulk listings from 2026-06 to 09).
  3. Ad spend pushed it in Japan: jp Lifestyle free from 10-28 to 11-01 41 → 19 → 11, with ratings up +19 and +18 in a single day over the same period; the Top Grossing chart followed, reaching Lifestyle Top Grossing #11-04 then #45. Other English-named shells from the same batch (Berk, Ceno, Renna, Lida) have only 0–3 ratings in Japan, so the difference is in ad spend and operations, not the product.
  4. Coin packs + possible web top-ups for monetization: 9 tiers of coin packs, top one at ¥15,000, no subscription. The official homepage is a top-up page, and the brand promotes "web 1 USD = 7000 coins" in the Middle East. In-app purchase revenue is only part of the picture, so the chart rank may understate its real income.
  5. Low-bar category charts: the Lifestyle Top Grossing bar is far lower than Social's; 240 ratings is enough to reach the top 50 of jp Lifestyle Top Grossing, and it's even lower in sa / lb / om.

6. Differentiation

The store-level "difference" is just camouflage: an English singing-community shell with foreign female hosts, while most Japanese peers use Japanese women and Japanese names. For Japanese users, "being able to talk to girls abroad" is a small selling point (mentioned 3 times in reviews). But it climbed not because of this difference, but through the combo of disguised listing + Japan ad push + low-bar charts. Functionally it's no different from Bobo, Ekko, or MIYABI+.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Still little known: no TrustMRR listing, no media coverage, 0 results on x-radar, and 0 TikTok content related to this iOS app.
  • Copycats: none specifically copying it; it's itself one of the mass-produced products of the same playbook. Same-period shells with the same model include Ekko, Bobo, Lida, Bestie, Renna, Berk, Ceno, and in Japan a large batch including coco+, ジョーカー, シロップ, パパイヤ.

8. Takeaways

  • Two-sided supply and demand: first the host / guild supply (recruiting families via WhatsApp), then concentrated volume in a market with high willingness to pay.
  • Chose a category (Lifestyle) with a low chart bar that can still absorb this kind of spending, rather than the fiercely competitive Social category.
  • A matrix approach: one backend, multiple front-end shells, traffic split by region (Middle East voice rooms / Japan video).
  • Risk warning, don't copy: Apple's newly added review terms 2026-10-16 2.5.19 explicitly ban "hidden, dormant, or undocumented features" and switching features after review; violators get removed and the developer account banned (ai-revolution.co.jp 2026-10-17; Apple Developer News "bait-and-switch apps"). Viva fits exactly this pattern, and a one-time developer account is set up for a ban. Its age rating of 18+ and privacy label saying "no data collected" don't hold up either.

9. Uncertain

  • Where Japanese traffic comes from (X ads, TikTok, Meta, or affiliate / ASP): not tracked by the ad libraries.
  • Whether FOSTER LANGLEY and ASIA SYS CONSULTING (Viva Sing's actual operator) are the same entity; what Japanese users actually get after install, 1v1 video or live rooms, which we haven't verified by installing.
  • How much comes from web top-ups, the actual revenue, and how much of the ratings are inflated.
  • How long it can stay listed after 2.5.19 takes effect.
