After Chai disappeared from iPhone: an AI chat app that looks exactly like Chai is picking up users
What it is An AI roleplay chat app with 18+ rating: pick a character or create your own, chat with it, have it continue the story, and pay per use in points.
Why it took off Chai went paid and then got pulled from iPhone, leaving people who want "free, casual chat like Chai" with nowhere to go. It had already worked on Android through Facebook ads, and now the iOS version is sitting in the store right when its ads sell "no filter."
CHow you could follow Stop building yet another generic character chat. Watch for events like price hikes, usage caps, or takedowns at the big apps, get a substitute into the store early, and scale spend the moment the event hits. Or focus on what users keep complaining about: weak memory and broken plot continuity.

Oct 22, the AI character chat app Chai was pulled from the App Store, and new users on iPhone can no longer download it. A month earlier it had announced that free users would pay for every message. A small app called Chimi World started charting in the Entertainment Top Grossing lists in the UK, Canada and Australia right around then. It has nothing new on the product side. It picked up the demand Chai left behind. Below: how it got there, where the money comes from, and whether this playbook is worth copying.
In one month, Chai closed its own door
Sep 2026 8: Chai founder Will Beauchamp posted on Reddit's r/ChaiApp: every message will now cost "pieces" (an in-app currency, handed out a little each day). The reason: "GPU prices doubled this year, and the unlimited chat model can't hold." To keep chatting without limits, you buy Premium at $13.99 a month.
Oct 22, he posted in the same subreddit that Chai couldn't be downloaded for now, the team was dealing with Apple, and people who already had it could keep using it. No date for a return. By Nov 5, the App Store in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, India and Australia still didn't show it in search (roborhythms.com Chai alternatives article, updated 11-05).
Chai's users have a specific profile: they're on phones, use it for free, and don't expect filtering. Character.AI filters strictly, and SpicyChat's iOS version was pulled by Apple in August 2025. By late October, someone on iPhone looking for "casual chat like Chai" had very few apps they could install directly.
What it is
Chimi World is an AI roleplay chat app: pick a character (dragon spirits, elf warriors, various personas), chat, and have it continue the story. You can also create your own character, with conversation prompts and voice replies. The App Store age rating is 18+, and the content notice reads "Sexual content or nudity: frequent."
It launched on iOS in Sep 6 and in late October was renamed from "Chimi World: Connect & Chat" to "Chimi World: Story Universe." The store description now talks about "immersive storytelling, create characters, your choices shape the plot," reading like an interactive fiction app. One US App Store review is blunter:
✅ Little to no filter. Allows for mature conversations and roleplay. (App Store US review)
It's made by Singapore company HEARTIE TECH PTE. LTD. The developer account has only this one app, and the phone number listed on Google Play is a US number. The Android package is ai.chimely.fortune, which doesn't match the product; the developer's display name used to be "Hamlikyger." A Singapore company, a US phone number and a disguise package name look like a common setup for Chinese going-global teams (inference, unverified).
How big it got
Android is actually the main market. It went on Google Play in April 2026, and by 11-06 had 368,262 installs and 6,818 ratings. From 10-29 to 11-06 it added about 6,000 installs, 700 to 800 a day, and has broken even (Google Play installs, 11-06). Its Play rating is 3.1 and polarized: one third-party count shows 56% five-star and 27% one-star. It charts #118 to #143 on the Play entertainment top grossing charts in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
iOS is just starting, with small but growing numbers:
| 10-28 | 11-06 | |
|---|---|---|
| UK ratings | 2 | 29 |
| Canada ratings | 4 | 15 |
| Australia ratings | 0 | 10 |
| US store rating count | — | 128 (average 4.76) |
(App Store ratings by storefront; no daily US numbers before 11-06.) UK ratings started accelerating from 10-30, right about a week after Chai was pulled. On the entertainment category top grossing chart, it ranked El Salvador #11-06 34, Chile #80, UK #98, Canada #121, Australia #127, US #185; the UK has been on the chart every day since 10-28. Note this is the category chart, not the overall chart: small countries rank in the dozens, and daily revenue there may be only tens to hundreds of dollars (estimate).
iOS 4.76 stars vs Android 3.1 stars, a noticeable gap. iOS probably got an in-app prompt for good reviews (inference); the Android score is closer to real word of mouth.
Where users come from: paid acquisition selling "no filter," timed with Chai's problems
Facebook / Instagram ads. It has a Facebook page called "Chimi World" that keeps posting vertical videos of about 30 seconds, "Build Your Own Story on Chimi World," "Meet AI characters on Chimi... choose how the story continues." It's still posting 11-03, standard ad creative format. What the ads actually sell slipped out in one Google Play review:
Very little memory. And there are definite filters (despite what the ad says)... This looks like many other AI chatbot apps, a definite cookie-cutter app. — Michael Marrone, Google Play, 2026-08-09,42 people found this helpful
In other words, the ads sell it as "unfiltered." How many ads ran, which countries they ran in, and how much was spent is not visible from outside (unverified).
Chai refugees. In a Facebook group focused on Chai, Character.AI and Talkie, someone posted that Chimi was "exactly like Chai before: unlimited chats, ads, no filters." To Chai users, it's a Chai substitute. The timing of its iOS growth lines up with Chai's removal from the App Store, but how much of that was users searching for it on their own versus paid push is impossible to tell (strong inference).
What's missing. Searching "chimi world" and "chimi ai" on TikTok returns only unrelated content, nobody on X is talking about it, and the "Chai alternatives" lists online don't mention it either (11-06). No creators, no press. It's bought, not word of mouth.
Where the money comes from
On iOS it sells "Sparks" points, consumed per use, in 8 tiers from $1.49 (500) to $199.99 (50,000). No subscription seen (US App Store page, 11-06). One review estimates "roughly $5 gets you about 100 chats." The Android version still has ads.
The route is the same as Chai's: pull people in with "free unlimited + ads," then tighten into per-message points. The title of that Facebook group post is "Chimi app changes from unlimited to token-based model," and the poster complained, "Why are these apps all so money-hungry?"
It sits on the multi-country Entertainment Top Grossing chart, so people are paying. The scale is modest, with estimated monthly revenue under tens of thousands of dollars (estimate, low confidence).
Who it's competing with
| Product | Landscape | Versus Chimi |
|---|---|---|
| Chai | Android still up, iOS 10-22 removed | The original prototype, with a much bigger character library and community. If it returns to iOS, Chimi loses its spot. |
| Character.AI | iOS US 561k ratings | Strict filters. The "unfiltered" demand comes from here. |
| Janitor AI | iOS US 5,693 rating, #9 on Entertainment Top Free | Started on the web, promises free unlimited chat, one of the top picks for Chai refugees |
| CrushOn / SpicyChat | Mostly web, CrushOn has an iOS app called Crushmash | Explicitly adult-oriented, paid plans from $5.99/month |
| Talkie, PolyBuzz, Emochi | Top players | Content operations at big-company level |
| POVIE, MIRAI, Cuddli AI, Hazy, Himly World, etc. | iOS US ratings all under a few dozen | Same template, appears next to Chimi in Apple's "Customers also bought" |
Users' own verdicts: "cookie-cutter" and "like Chai, just with shorter replies." It has no product moat, just a good position: when Chai left the iPhone, it happened to be in the App Store, and happened to be buying "unfiltered" ads.
If it were you
Verdict: Copying a Chimi isn't worth it. The category is packed with template apps, and the window depends on when Chai returns to iOS and when Apple tightens review, two things you don't control. What's worth learning is the playbook itself: when the leader stumbles, substitutes take the users.
Who it suits: teams that already have an AI character chat backend, can run Meta ads, and can calculate the model cost per message. These teams usually already have an Android version, so moving to iOS and swapping in more tame store copy is cheap.
Who it doesn't suit: indie developers starting from zero. Model costs scale per message. Chai itself was squeezed off free by GPU prices. Without paid acquisition experience and relying on organic store traffic, there's basically none here. If you can't accept App Store removal risk, stay away. SpicyChat and Chai have both been pulled.
How to do it: Don't build the Nth generic character chat. Two paths. One: watch the policy changes of leading apps (price hikes, limits, added filters, removals, shutdowns in some countries), build the substitute in advance, lock down the store listing, and add spend the moment an event hits. Chai February already put paywalls on free users in 22 countries (India, Pakistan, Egypt, etc.), and the users pushed out from there are ready-made. Two: do what it does poorly. The recurring complaints in reviews are weak memory, inconsistent storylines, and not being able to find characters through search. Long memory and coherent plots are what Janitor and Candy monetize.
How to get users: Follow its playbook. Meta vertical short videos, sell "free to chat, we won't stop you," and land on the store page. Write store copy as interactive storytelling, and don't write "unfiltered" in the description (Chimi itself changed this in late October, likely to pass review). Give generous free allowances, build volume first, then charge per message.
Before: Before Chai returned to the App Store. It 10-22 was pulled with no date given, so it could have been weeks or months.
What would mean we got it wrong: ① Chai relists on iOS and Chimi's UK rating growth drops back to a few per day; ② Chimi or similar apps get removed by Apple, showing this gray-area route doesn't work on iOS; ③ The opposite: Chimi breaks into the top 50 of the US Entertainment Top Grossing chart and holds, which would mean the gap Chai left is bigger than it looks and worth moving on faster.

- Confirmed Meta (Facebook/Instagram) paid acquisition: the Chimi World Facebook page (61595483151156) keeps posting 30-second video creatives; the Play review "definite filters (despite what the ad says)" shows the ad pitch is no filters; our metaads library doesn't track it, so spend scale is unverified.

Why Chimi World: Story Universe (iOS 6801090661) took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Regions checked: an App Store sweep across all storefronts (in our database it has only charted in au/by/ca/cl/gb/ie/pk/sv/us), focusing on us/gb/ca/au; on Google Play, the same product ai.chimely.fortune.
Bottom line
A Singapore shell company (HEARTIE TECH PTE. LTD.) built a "Chai-style" unfiltered AI character roleplay chat app: Android launched first (2026-04), and paid creatives built on "barely any filter + free unlimited chat" got 368k installs; iOS only arrived in September, and real growth came in late October, right as Chai 9-08 switched to per-message "pieces" and 10-22 was removed from iOS, when large numbers of Chai users were looking for "Chai-like alternatives." The app itself has no product differentiation (users call it "cookie-cutter" and "exactly like Chai"). It broke through on a category gap + paid acquisition, not the product.
1. What it is
- Name: the iOS name is now Chimi World: Story Universe (the Spanish-language store calls it Chimi World: Historias). It was earlier called Chimi World: Connect & Chat, subtitle "Shape Your Own Story." The old App Store description read "✓ Little to no filter. Allows for mature conversations and roleplay" (from the Jina search result summary for apps.apple.com/us/app/chimi-world-connect-chat/id6801090661). The current description has been rewritten around "immersive storytelling, create characters, choose how the plot unfolds" and no longer mentions filtering.
- Core product: AI character chat/roleplay (homepage of chat.chimi.space: "Discover Endless Stories Through AI Characters……24/7 interactive companionship"; characters include Dragon Spirit Yuki and Elf Warrior Sylas, with voice replies and dialogue prompts).
- Developer: HEARTIE TECH PTE. LTD., address 2 Venture Drive #14-02 Vision Exchange Singapore, contact email [email protected], phone in the US +1 341 range (Google Play developer info). Its early Play developer display name was "Hamlikyger" (mirror pages on acknosoft and appbrain), later changed to HEARTIE TECH. iOS bundle ID
com.chimichat.world, Play package nameai.chimely.fortune(the package name has nothing to do with the product, a typical disguised package name). - Rating 17+ (Play: Mature 17+, including "Sexual Themes"); Play lists "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases"; iOS supports 17 languages.
- Possible link: Heartie (heartie.net, "Heartie Technology Limited"), a similarly named AI companion app claiming 100k+ users, with Pro at $9.99/mo and Ultra at $19.99/mo. Whether it's the same team is unverified.
2. Data (how big it actually got)
Google Play (main market)
| Date | installs | Score | Star rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-29 | 362,211 | 6,624 | 2.96 |
| 2026-11-03 | 367,234 | 6,749 | 3.03 |
| 2026-11-06 | 368,262 | 6,818 | 3.07 |
Source: googleplay library app_day. Play release date 2026-04-29 (library app.released; may reset when the listing info changes). Over 8 days it gained about 6,000 installs (roughly 750/day), now plateaued. Play Entertainment Top Grossing ranks: ca 118, gb 129, au 138, us 143 (chart_rank; present every day since 10-29). The Play page shows a star rating of 3.1 from 6.83K ratings, with a polarized distribution (acknosoft cites 6,329 ratings: 56% five-star, 27% one-star).
iOS (the target of this card)
- Released 2026-09-06, current version 1.0.22 (2026-10-28). When appbrain recorded it on 10-14, it was 1.0.16 and still called "Connect & Chat".
- US store lookup: 128 ratings, average 4.76 (2026-11-06 iTunes lookup). UK: 30 ratings, 4.73.
- The jump in the data card from 10-28 → 11-06, going from 6 to 173, is a counting artifact. The US store first entered the library on 11-06 (already 119 ratings that day), so the 11-05 → 11-06 gap of 126 is "newly included US store," not new installs. Excluding that, the real growth is in the UK store: gb went from 2 to 29 ratings between 10-28 and 11-06, about 2–5 per day, accelerating from 10-30; ca went 4 → 15, au 0 → 10 (appstore library app_day).
- Top Grossing charts (Entertainment category, not overall): sv 34, cl 80, by 93, gb 98, ca 121, au 127, us 185. In gb it sat between #98 and #152 every day from 10-28, and from 10-30 it also charted in ie (#96) and pk (#161) (appstore library chart_rank). The Entertainment Top Grossing bar is low, so a spot at #100 in a smaller country may mean only tens to a few hundred dollars a day.
- iOS 4.76 stars vs. Play 3.0 stars: iOS most likely has in-app review prompts (SKStoreReviewController or similar), so the Play score is closer to real sentiment. Unverified.
3. Competitors (who else does the same thing)
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Chimi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chai | Android (removed from iOS 2026-10-22) | 2021 | The leader, Chimi's direct prototype | Since 9-08, free users spend pieces per message; Premium is $13.99/mo. New iOS users can't download it, which leaves room for Chimi (roborhythms.com, updated 2026-11-05). |
| Character.AI | iOS/Android/web | 2022/2023 | US 561k ratings, +7 in 559 days. | Strict filtering; the source of the "no filter" demand that Chimi targets directly. |
| Janitor AI | Web + iOS | iOS 2025-11-29 | US rating 5,693, #9 on Entertainment Top Free | Web-first, supports bring-your-own models, FAQ promises free unlimited use. Chimi is a pure app, driven by paid acquisition. |
| Talkie / PolyBuzz / Emochi | iOS/Android | 2023–2025 | Leaders (MiniMax-backed Talkie and others) | Big-company content operations and character libraries. Chimi is two orders of magnitude smaller. |
| SpicyChat / CrushOn | Web plus APK (SpicyChat's iOS app was removed 2025-08) | 2023 | Large web sites | Mainly web, explicitly adult-oriented. Chimi sells 17+ borderline-explicit versions in stores. |
| Sekai, Tolan, status | iOS | 2024 | US 30k / 188k / 210k ratings | More creation/companionship/social simulation than a "Chai replacement." |
| Same-category long tail: POVIE, MIRAI, Cuddli AI, Uvol, Tickle, Himly World, Backstage, Hazy, Mellow, Doo Space | iOS | 2025-09 to 2026-08 | US ratings are all in the tens, and their Entertainment Top Grossing ranks vary from #28 to #164. | Nearly the same template (AI characters plus "immersive interactive story" copy). Apple's "You might also like" recommendations group them with Chimi (apps.apple.com/za recommendation page). |
Conclusion: heavy competition and a lot of sameness. Chimi is neither first nor best.
4. Growth tactics (where users come from)
- Meta (Facebook/Instagram) paid acquisition: essentially confirmed. There is a Facebook page "Chimi World" (page id 61595483151156) that keeps posting roughly 30-second videos such as "Build Your Own Story on Chimi World" and "Meet AI characters on Chimi… choose how the story continues" (still posting as of 2026-11-03). This is a typical ad creative format. Play user reviews mention the ads directly: "there are definite filters (despite what the ad says)" (Michael Marrone, 2026-08-09,42 people found it helpful). So the ad pitch is "no filter." Our metaads and tiktokads libraries don't track this advertiser (not on our list, which doesn't mean it isn't running ads). The FB ad library page doesn't expose the active ad count, so the scale of spend is unverified.
- Migration from Chai's troubles: timing matches, strong inference. Chai announced pieces-per-message on 2026-09-08, and iOS removed it on 10-22 (a r/ChaiApp founder post, relayed by roborhythms). In Chai's community, Chimi was described as "exactly like Chai: free unlimited, with ads, no filter" (Facebook group "Chai · C.ai · Talkie · Emochi," post titled "Chimi app changes from unlimited to token-based model"). Chimi's iOS UK ratings started accelerating from 10-30, which lines up with the week after Chai's iOS removal. Whether users found it on their own or paid acquisition was added on top can't be separated.
- Store search and related-app recommendations. The old iOS name "Connect & Chat" plus "little to no filter" copy catches searches like "AI chat no filter"; Apple's recommendation page puts it next to similar apps. The evidence is indirect.
- Creators, influencers, and media: none found. TikTok searches for "chimi world" and "chimi ai" return only unrelated content (TikHub, 2026-11-06). The X corpus has no relevant posts in 60 days. Reddit has only scattered complaints, and the various "Chai alternatives" listicles don't mention it.
5. Where the money comes from
- Mixed monetization: ads (Play lists "Contains ads") plus in-app purchases and subscriptions. The early "free unlimited + ads" approach drew users in, then it switched to token-based billing (FB group post), the same path Chai took: use free unlimited to pull people in, then tighten the quota to push them to pay.
- Staying on iOS Entertainment Top Grossing charts in several countries shows some paying users. On Play it charted #118–#143 in 4 Entertainment Top Grossing markets. The scale is modest; my estimate is under tens of thousands of dollars a month (speculation, unverified).
6. Why it took off
- The category demand is real and the big players are pushing it away: Character.AI has strict filters, Chai started charging in September, 10-22's iOS app was removed, and Apple removed SpicyChat long ago. Users who want a free, unfiltered chat that works on iPhone the moment they open it have nowhere to go.
- Positioning as a wedge: the old store copy said "Little to no filter" outright, and the ads sell no filter too. The pitch is a "Chai alternative."
- Android validated the paid acquisition model first: launched on Play in April, reached 368k installs and 6.8K ratings within half a year, then copied the same backend and creatives to iOS in September.
- iOS compliance rename: renamed to "Story Universe" in October with the description changed to "interactive storytelling," most likely to pass review and avoid the fate of Chai and SpicyChat (inference).
7. Differentiation
Essentially none. Users write "definite cookie-cutter app," "looks like many other AI chatbot apps," and "Reminds me of Chai only shorter answers." On the product side it's the standard set: character library, custom characters, conversation prompts, voice replies. Its only "difference" is that it can still be downloaded in stores and (at least early on) is free unlimited with a no-filter claim. That is a positional difference, not a product one, and it's exactly why it took off. Once it moved to token billing, even that difference started to disappear (people in the FB group are already complaining).
8. Visibility and copycats
- Few people know about it yet: no media coverage, no creators, no founder revenue posts on TrustMRR, zero discussion on X, and none of the "Chai alternative" lists mention it.
- Copycats: none I can confirm copied it. Similar template apps (Himly World, Cuddli, Hazy, etc.) appeared in parallel, and several launched their iOS versions earlier.
9. Takeaways
- "Leader's trouble → alternatives scoop up the users": watch policy changes at the leading apps (pricing, removals, tighter filtering), claim the "X alternative" slot in stores ahead of time, and scale up ads the moment the event hits.
- Run the paid acquisition model on Android first and validate it before going to iOS. Use gentler storytelling copy in the iOS version to get through review.
- Free unlimited + ads to drive growth, then switch to token billing once there is scale. Risk: polarized sentiment (3.0 stars on Play), and users may leave when billing changes.
10. Uncertain
- Meta's actual ad count, countries, and spend. Whether it also runs on TikTok (not checked for Europe).
- How much of the iOS growth came from "Chai refugees flowing in naturally" versus paid acquisition.
- Whether it's the same team as heartie.net (Heartie Technology Limited). Whether there's a China-linked overseas team behind it (Singapore shell, US phone number, look-alike package names; suggestive but unverified).
- The US rating curve before 11-06 (the library has only one day of US data).
- The real revenue scale.
