# 5M kids are complaining about too many ads: a Vietnamese factory's origami app, and the 12 clones behind it

**What it is** A free origami app: watch step-by-step videos to learn folding, or tap along the creases and the paper folds itself. You play level by level, and it earns from ads.

**Why it took off** Origami has long been a high-traffic topic on TikTok, but the app stores only had old illustrated guides. A Vietnamese utility-app factory filled the package name with keywords, picked a niche category, and used an ad-monetization template to push it up. Starting in September, it drove traffic through self-run TikTok accounts using trending IP videos.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't make the 15th origami app. Pick a handcraft topic with lots of content on TikTok but only old illustrated guides in apps, and build it as a watch-and-play level experience. Fix what people complain about most, "steps are hard to follow, too many ads". Launch on Google Play's niche categories in multiple languages, and pair it with a self-run TikTok account for traffic.

Grade C: the origami topic already had 12+ factory clones within two and a half months, with the same gameplay and keywords. Ad revenue per app is thin, so it isn't worth it for an individual to follow. But the method (topic selection + ASO + TikTok traffic) is worth learning. Circulating in niche circles

"Origami World: Learn & Play," by Vietnamese tool-game factory NELI Creative. Its Android version went from about 200k installs to 1M in one week in late July of 2026, reached about 5M installs by Nov 6, and is still gaining 290k in the last 7 days. It didn't win on a new idea. It packaged the children's origami demand that had been big on TikTok into a mini-game where you "tap and the paper folds itself," then monetized through ads. The iOS version only moved over at the end of August and has just over a hundred ratings. The topic has been copied to death; what's worth taking is the method.

### A one-star review with 20 likes

2026 Oct 22, Google Play, Poland store. A user who is clearly still in school gave Origami World one star:

> I can't make anything, and I only get three hints before you make me pay. Stupid game, don't pretend it's not. I'd uninstall it. One star, all for ads.

This review has 20 "helpful" votes, the most-liked review for this app. Scrolling down, almost all share the same tone: "tons of ads", "steps are hard to follow", "videos play too fast". One says "this was clearly made with AI and not checked, I wanted to make Halloween decorations and couldn't." On the other side, some write "very relaxing" or "helped my son learn origami."

Rating histogram is polarized: 1 one-star 2,192 reviews versus 5 five-star 7,742 reviews, average 4.04 (Google Play, 11-06). In other words, lots of kids are cursing it out while still using it — and this App has about 4,997,854 installs cumulative as of Nov 6.

### What it is

A free origami app with two modes: Learn mode has step-by-step video tutorials, and Play mode gives you a preset shape. You tap along the creases and the paper folds itself, leveling up one stage at a time. The newer iOS version added AR tracing. In-app purchases run $2.49–$35.99 to unlock more designs and hints, but the money mainly comes from ads. AppGazers estimates its Play in-app purchase revenue between 10-07 and 11-06 at under $5K, and the app is tagged "contains ads." The most concentrated complaint in reviews is ad frequency.

The users are mainly kids, and the strongest market is Poland (#4,11-06 on the Play Arts & Design free chart), with Malaysia at #7, Sweden at #8, Italy at #9, and the US at #42.

### How it took off

Installs curve from a third-party estimate (AppstoreSpy): several thousand a day in June; about 39k a day on Jul 11; **7–200k a day from Jul 23 to 31** , passing 1M on Jul 29; 2–140k a day in August; slowing in September, then back to 3–130k a day in October. The daily numbers are averaged estimates: the shape is credible, but don't pick at the details.

There's no direct outside evidence for who drove the July wave. The stepped jump looks more like paid acquisition or a Play featuring slot (inferred), and none of the three major ad libraries show this company's ads. But not finding them doesn't mean they weren't run.

Three things can be confirmed:

1. **Niche category + keywords stuffed.** The package name is `origami.paper.folding.craft.guide.relax.learn.magic`, a string of search terms. Arts & Design is a low-barrier category, 11-06 it sits on the free chart of 30 stores, and chart position brings organic traffic too.

2. **The factory's ready-made template.** NELI has 55 apps on Google Play (AppGazers). In the first half of 2026 it consecutively shipped drawing/painting apps like Draw & Paint (5.13M installs), keyboard-theme apps like Cute Keyboard (4.43M) and Mechanical Keyboard (3.77M), and small toy apps like Finger Picker (3.22M). Swap the topic, do ASO, add ads: same process, and origami is the topic this playbook hit.

3. **The second wave from September came from self-run TikTok accounts.** @origami.world217 is literally named Origami World, and its profile link points straight to the Play page. A Sep 25 video of a Stranger Things Demogorgon made with paper claws got 6.98M views, a Sep 21 "small paper toys, big fun" video got 4.73M, and an Oct 4 "Halloween paper claw DIY, download now" video got 2.13M. On Oct 29 it posted a batch of Kamikara paper toys and paper Naruto, all with the same caption: "Download Origami World to watch full tutorials." The videos show only half the process, and the full tutorial is inside the app. October's daily Play installs returned to 5–130k, which fits the timing (inferred).

### Why origami

The demand has always been big, and the supply has always been old. Origami creator @origamiworld0 gets 6M to 21M views per video on TikTok, and @dariusorigami had one video hit 23M. Paper claws, infinity origami, and other kids' handcraft trends keep coming in waves. But the origami apps in the app stores are still stuck several years back:

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Origami Paper Art - Diagram | Android | 2018-10 | 2.09M installs | Illustrated catalogs with no playable levels |
| Origami: paper crafts(SkyWave) | Android | 2022-08 | 840k installs | Static tutorial collections |
| Origami Master: Create & Fold | iOS | 2019-05 | US: 2,033 ratings | The biggest long-running iOS tutorial app, no gamification |
| Andreas Bauer's origami series | iOS | From ¥2011 | Hundreds of ratings in the German store | Paid, aimed at adults (folding money) |
| Kami origami simulator | Open source | 2026-01 | Single TikTok videos with 3.26M views | Simulation only, no teaching |

No big studio is doing this. Older products are either diagrams or paid and aimed at adults; the first one to put "watch the tutorial" and "play the levels" together, free for kids, was this one.

### Who's competing for it: 12+ clones in two and a half months

After it blew up in July, a row of Google Play apps with nearly identical names and package IDs appeared (Google Play, 11-06):

| Clone | Developer | Launched | Total installs | Last 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Origami Fold & Paper Craft | SHINK COMPANY | 08-18 | 600k | +83k |
| Origami Tutorial: Learn & Play | Shin Keuk | 07-29 | 550k | +38k |
| Simple Origami: Paper Folding | Mixify Studio | 07-30 | 410k | — |
| Origami Guide: Learn & Fold | Hong Kong Lux Limo | 08-24 | 360k | +18k |
| Origami: Learn Paper Folding | Collectible Home Foundation | 08-26 | 330k | +41k |
| Origami Joy: Fold Paper & Play | TOMODEV JSC | 09-17 | 170k | +60k |
| Origami: Paper Fold & Craft | VISUALFLOW LAB | 09-25 | 110k | +15k |
| Origami: Learn Paper Folding | Leilani Rogers | 10-12 | 32k | +26k |

There are also Aseanlab, Nilanjana, WorkPlay Space, Shark Studio, and a knockoff titled exactly "Origami World: Learn & Play." On iOS, Origami Guide, Origami AR and Foldgami launched between 9 and October. The followers are mostly Vietnamese studio factories, the classic "saw a chart explode, cloned it."

Interestingly, late entrants launched in October still pull 20-30K installs a week, while Origami Joy, launched in September, gets 60K a week. Demand isn't exhausted yet, but each clone's slice keeps getting thinner.

### It hasn't really taken off on iOS

The iOS version 2026-08-28 is live in the Graphics & Design category. As of 11-06, it has about 117 ratings across all stores, with twenty-odd added in the last 10 days. It sits on category charts in 58–89 stores every day, and has even hit the top 30 of the Top Grossing chart in Latvia and Poland. But it only has 0–1 ratings in those stores, and a niche category's Top Grossing chart in a small country can be reached with a couple of in-app purchases, so this doesn't prove the iOS app makes money. Vietnam has the most ratings (21). Reviews there range from "it explains the hard parts so beginners get it" to "I can't fold anything."

### If it were you

**C. You can learn a playbook here, but don't build another origami app.** Over two and a half months, a dozen-plus studio factories entered this niche, each with the same mechanics, the same keywords and the same ad monetization. Late entrants still get some installs, but ad revenue per install is thin to begin with, and a solo dev building the 15th origami app doesn't pay off. What's worth taking away is how they found the niche and distributed it.

**Good fit for:** small teams already doing ASO on Google Play, experienced with ad monetization, able to ship one app a month; teams with someone willing to cut TikTok shorts daily.

**Not a fit for:** anyone hoping to make money from a premium app with subscriptions (this audience is kids, who don't pay, and only watch ads); newcomers who haven't shipped on Play or run ad mediation; anyone who only wants iOS (it hasn't taken off there either).

**How to do it:** pick a hands-on or skill topic with huge TikTok content volume but still dated diagram-style apps, such as paper toys/Kamikara, knots, cat's cradle, Rubik's cubes, or simple drawing. Search each one first. The weak spots of this app are your opening: the complaints cluster around "steps unclear, arrows messy, videos too fast, looks AI-generated, can't actually make it." Making each step clear, slow-mo-able and reversible matters more than adding dozens more designs. Leave room on ad frequency and don't hard-lock the hints.

**How to get users:** stuff the package name and title with keywords, localize and go after niche Play categories, and start in low-competition storefronts like Poland, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. Run a self-owned TikTok account using seasonal hot IP (Halloween, hit shows, anime characters) for "half-the-tutorial" shorts ending with "Download to see the full tutorial."

**When to move:** pick the topic fast. This niche went from one app exploding to over a dozen clones in just two and a half months. If your topic already has three or more new Play apps with the same name and mechanics, pick something else.

**Signs you misread it:** (1) clones' weekly new installs mostly fall to a few thousand or less after December, and Origami World itself stops growing, meaning it was a kids' trend and the window has closed; (2) Play delists or forces major redesigns on this app and its clones over kids-directed ad rules (an inferred risk; rules for child-directed apps are stricter), meaning this monetization doesn't work for kids' topics; (3) conversely, if a clone overtakes it on ratings and installs by "explaining it more clearly," that means there is still room to do origami better, and a C was too low.

## Why Origami World: Learn & Play (iOS id 6801474723) took off

> In short: it really took off on Google Play, not iOS. The Android version of Vietnamese tools/mini-game studio NELI CREATIVE went from 200k to 1M installs within a week in late 2026-07, and now has about 5M installs worldwide, gaining 290k in the last 7 days. It rode the combination of "origami tutorials + level-based origami games" and TikTok's long-running demand for craft content. Users skew young (mostly kids, based on Polish reviews), monetized with ads. The iOS version only arrived 2026-08-28 and has about 117 ratings across the whole store. The "LV/PL Top Grossing 33/34" in the recall card is noise from small, obscure category charts and doesn't indicate iOS revenue.

Stores checked: all 115 stores in the appstore library scanned (product dimension), with focus on vn, pl, us, br, jp, gb and de; all 30 stores in the googleplay library checked.

### 1. Basics (data)

#### iOS (appstore library, 2026-10-28 to 11-06)

- Developer NELI CREATIVE COMPANY LIMITED (developer_id 1704457802), 11 apps on iOS, this one listed 2026-08-28; category Graphics & Design (6027), free with in-app purchases, 168 MB, 4+, 13 languages.

- Total ratings across all stores about 106–125 (the total fluctuates with the number of stores charting, not because ratings actually dropped); new ratings per day over the last 0–7,10 days total about 27. Stores with the most ratings: vn 21, us 16, in 13, br 8, fr/mx/ca 7.

- Charting: on the Graphics & Design category chart in 58–89 stores on most days, best rank 20–34 (vn free 20, pl free 28). Top-grossing category entries appear occasionally: lv 27/33, ee 25, kw 31, pl 34, vn 35, but this app has only 0–1 ratings in those stores, and the bar for small-country Graphics & Design top-grossing is very low, so a couple of in-app purchases can get you on. That's noise, not evidence of revenue.

- US store: best rank on the category free chart was 139 (within 10 days), 16 ratings.

#### Android (googleplay library, historical data backfilled from AppstoreSpy)

- Package name com.origami.paper.folding.craft.guide.relax.learn.magic, store launch date 2026-06-29, but AppstoreSpy already recorded 3,488 installs on 2026-05-31, meaning it was listed earlier (in an older form or at small scale).

- Install curve (AppstoreSpy estimate): from 6-09 onward a few thousand per day; 6-28/29 two days at 1–20K each; 7-11 one day at 39K; **7-23 to 7-31 7–200K per day** , passing 7-29 and reaching 1M; August 2–140K per day; September slowed; October back to 3–130K per day. As of 2026-11-06 cumulative **4,997,854** , +290,256 over 7 days (googleplay library).

- 10,681 reviews, average 4.04, but the histogram is polarized: 1 stars 2,192, 5 stars 7,742.

- Ad-supported (ad_supported=True) plus in-app purchases $2.49–$35.99. AppGazers' model estimates Play in-app purchases of under $5K from 10-07 to 11-06, **so the money mainly comes from ads** .

- 2026-11-06 on the ART_AND_DESIGN free chart in 30 stores: pl 4, my 7, se 8, it 9, br/vn 14, de 18 …… us 42.

- Review sample (pl 52 reviews, average 2.9): the most-liked negative reviews are almost all "too many ads," "only three hints, pay for more," "can't follow the steps," "looks AI-generated, can't make it"; the writing is clearly from kids.

#### Developer

- NELI Creative (neli-creative.com, Vietnam; the site has Vietnamese text and Vietnamese phone numbers; sister brands include NelieX and Nelime). 55 apps on Google Play (AppGazers), 24 in our library, about 37.7M installs combined; a dense release wave in the first half of 2026: Draw & Paint 5.13M, Cute Keyboard 4.43M, Mechanical Keyboard 3.77M, Finger Picker 3.22M… all drawing / keyboard-theme / wallpaper / small-toy tool games on the same ad-monetization template.

- iOS is secondary: 11 apps, all ported after their Android versions blew up, with small ratings.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Origami Paper Art - Diagram(GeniusTools Labs) | Android | 2018-10 | 2.09M installs, 7-day +24k | Old-style diagram catalog, no "play" levels |
| Origami: paper crafts(SkyWave) | Android | 2022-08 | 840k installs | Static tutorial collections |
| Origami Master: Create & Fold(Nurlan Ispayev) | iOS | 2019-05 | US 2,033 ratings | The biggest long-running origami tutorial app on iOS, no gamification |
| How to Make Origami / older Origami series apps (Andreas Bauer et al.) | iOS | 2011– | Paid, few hundred ratings | Paid tool, skewing adult (paper money, etc.) |
| YouTube / TikTok origami tutorial accounts (@origamiworld0 etc.) | Other | Years | @origamiworld0 single posts 600–21M views | Free, content is the tutorial; Origami World packs that demand into an interactive App |
| Kami (open-source origami simulator) | Open source | 2026-01 | Single TikTok videos with 3.26M views | Pure simulator, no teaching |

No big player is doing this. Older rivals are either illustrated catalogs or paid tools, and none offer a level-based game where you tap a fold line and the paper folds itself.

### 3. Copycats (already plenty)

After it spiked in late July, at least 12 near-identical clones with the same package-name pattern appeared on Play within 2–3 months (googleplay library, 11-06):

- Origami Tutorial: Learn & Play (Shin Keuk, 07-29) 550k installs

- Simple Origami: Paper Folding (Mixify Studio, 07-30) 410k

- Origami Fold & Paper Craft (SHINK COMPANY, 08-18) 600k, +83k in 7 days

- Origami Guide: Learn & Fold (Hong Kong Lux Limo, 08-24) 360k

- Origami: Learn Paper Folding (Collectible Home Foundation, 08-26) 330k

- Origami Art: Easy Learn & Play (Aseanlab, 08-25), Origami AR (Nilanjana, 08-24), Origami Master: Learn to Fold (WorkPlay Space, 09-11), Origami Joy (TOMODEV JSC, 09-17.2M, +60k in 7 days), Origami: Paper Fold & Craft (VISUALFLOW LAB, 09-25.1M), Leilani Rogers (10-12), Shark Studio (10-18)

- There is also a direct namesake, com.mstok.origami “Origami World: Learn & Play” (visible on the Play web page).

- iOS: Origami Guide: Learn, Practice (Nam Dang Hoang, 2026-09-10), Origami AR: Step by Step Fold (GEARVN, 2026-09-16, charting 15–50 in small-country categories such as Sri Lanka), Foldgami (2026-10-15).

Most are from Vietnam-based factories (TOMODEV JSC, GEARVN, Aseanlab, Nam Dang Hoang), a classic “see the app blow up on AppstoreSpy or the charts and copy it” pattern.

### 4. Growth tactics

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Play store category charts + search (ASO) | Package name stuffed with keywords (origami.paper.folding.craft.guide.relax.learn.magic); charting #4 in the free ART_AND_DESIGN chart in the 30 store. Niche categories are easy to push to the top with volume, and top placement brings organic traffic. | Yes |
| Self-run TikTok content account @origami.world217 | Account name Origami World, profile link points straight to this app's Play page. 13,249 followers, 171 posts, 166k total likes. Two of the posts, 2026-09-21/25 and 10-04, have 4.72M and 6.98M views, and a third has 2.13M (on hot topics like Stranger Things' villain and paper claws). Captions read "Download Origami World to watch full tutorials." Posts roughly 58 times a day in October. | Yes, but the account only started gaining traction in September, after the July spike, so it doesn't explain the first wave. |
| Paid acquisition (Google App Campaigns / Meta / TikTok) | None of our three ad libraries tracked NELI. The stepped daily rise from 7-23 at 13–200k installs and the second push in October look like paid user acquisition or a Play featuring slot. | No (inference) |
| Word of mouth among kids / schools | Polish reviews mostly sound like kids, and PL is the strongest store. Kids' crafts trends like paper claws and infinity origami are huge on TikTok. | No (inference) |
| iOS | Carried over from Android, riding Apple search and low-competition small-country category charts. No dedicated iOS promotion spotted. | Partial |

### 5. Why it took off

1. **Strong demand topic, stale supply:** Origami and paper toys have long been big traffic on TikTok (@origamiworld0 single posts at 1,000–21M views, @dariusorigami 23M), but apps only offered illustrated catalogs from around 2018 years ago. It turns tutorials into levels where you tap folds and the paper moves, something kids can play.

2. **Factory capability:** In 2026 years NELI has repeatedly shipped 6 tools that reached 3M+ installs on Play. The pattern is a reusable template: swap the theme, do ASO, monetize with ads. Origami World is one topic that hit with that playbook.

3. **Niche categories + small countries:** The Art & Design and Graphics & Design charts have low bars. 30 store placements reach the top 50, and pl, my, se and it land in the top 10.

4. **Ad monetization works:** IAP is nearly zero (AppGazers puts it under $5K/month), yet it has 5M installs and many one-star reviews complaining about “too many ads.” Ad frequency is high, so user volume is the revenue.

5. **Second wave from the self-run TikTok account:** Starting in September it used trending IP origami videos to drive traffic, and Play daily installs climbed back to 5–130k in October.

### 6. Differentiation

Compared with older origami apps, it merges “tutorial” and “game” (Learn mode shows step videos, Play mode has you fold on preset shapes), plus AR tracing (newer iOS version). That's part of why kids actually play it, but it's not a moat. Within two months, more than 12 copies had already filled Play with the same gameplay and the same name. Its real edge is **first-mover advantage plus factory distribution** , not the product.

### 7. Visibility

Chatter in small circles: no press, zero X discussion (x-radar finds no relevant mentions in 60 days). Revenue isn't public. But tool sites like AppGazers, AppstoreSpy and Similarweb all list it, and the Vietnamese clone factories clearly noticed and started copying.

### 8. What to borrow

- Look for crafts and skills topics (origami, paper toys, knots, Rubik's cubes, drawing) that have huge content volume on TikTok but where apps are still a decade-old illustrated catalog. Build them as interactive “watch + play” levels and launch on Play with niche categories and multiple languages.

- Use a self-run TikTok account and trending IP for content, and close each video with “download to watch the full tutorial” to route traffic back to the store.

- Validate on Android first, prove ad monetization, then port to iOS.

- But this path is now crowded. Origami itself has been copied to death, so take the method, not the topic.

### 9. Uncertain

- Whether the 7-23 wave came from paid acquisition, a Play featuring slot, or a specific TikTok/YouTube video: no direct evidence found (the ad libraries didn't track NELI).

- Whether it earns anything on iOS: its Top Grossing rank sits in small-country stores with only 0–1 ratings, a bar so low it isn't evidence of revenue.

- AppstoreSpy's single-day curve figures are averaged estimates.
