Searched “Doubao” and found no official app: how does a zero-rating copycat App hold the Top Grossing chart in six small countries
What it is: An English AI photo-editing and chat App that borrows the name “Doubao,” published under an individual developer account. It charges $5.99 a week after a 3-day trial. ByteDance has nothing to do with it.
Why it took off: The official Doubao isn't listed in overseas stores, and many people on overseas TikTok are teaching how to download Doubao. Anyone searching the term can only land on the namesake knockoff. The bar for lifestyle Top Grossing charts in small countries is low, so a few weeks of weekly subscriptions is enough to chart.
DHow you could follow: Don't copy this App itself. You can borrow its keyword-finding method: find domestic hit brands that aren't listed overseas and that people on TikTok are teaching others to download, and get in while the store still has few namesake copies.

ByteDance's Doubao is only listed on the App Store in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Outside those places, people searching “doubao” see a row of “Doubao International” apps published by individual accounts. DouBao AI: Talk·Ask·Assistant is one of them. It launched in Oct 11, still has zero ratings today, yet charts in lifestyle Top Grossing in Barbados, Tanzania, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka. It didn't take off on its product. It rode a search term nobody claimed. This piece covers how it captured that term, and why following now is already too late.
A Cambodian video's "China region only" line
On 2026 Apr 12, Cambodian TikTok creator socheukong posted a video titled "What AI are Chinese people using?" with the caption "Free Download \"DouBao 豆包\" in App store, play store (Chinese region only)". The video has 150k views (TikTok, 11-06).
Similar videos are everywhere this year: in Vietnam someone shows how to install Doubao on iPhone and iPad (20k views), the Russian-speaking space has a pile of tutorials on using Seedance 2.0 inside doubao (tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand views), and some creators reply in comments with step-by-step guides for Android and iPhone because "so many people ask how to download Doubao". The Chinese web has searches like "why can't I download the Doubao app from the Apple store" too.
The parenthetical "Chinese region only" is the entire premise of this business. Anyone who watches the video searches doubao in their own country's App Store. The real app is missing; at the top are DeepSeek and ChatGPT, then personal-account apps with DouBao in their names. On Nov 6, searching doubao in the Barbados store, this app ranked #8; in the Tanzania store #4; in the US store #10 (iTunes search, 11-06).
What it actually is
It's called DouBao AI and has nothing to do with Doubao. The store description opens with a prompt: AI chat from screenshots, ID photos, AI portraits and AI art photos all require an auto-renewing membership, with 3 days free for new users. The features listed are AI photo editing, cutout, outpainting, filters, image generation and chat, a generic AI photo-editing and chat template. Prices are $5.99 weekly, $8.99 monthly, $16.99 yearly.
The developer is Avery Wesley, a personal account with this as the only app. It's English-only, filed under Lifestyle, and its privacy policy and terms are two public Google Docs. The current version is 1.2, updated Oct 26, with a one-line changelog: "Fixed a critical bug in subscription status checks" (App Store, 11-06). It doesn't claim to be ByteDance's, and doesn't use ByteDance's model.
How a zero-rated app reaches the top-grossing charts
First, how far it has gotten (App Store category charts across stores, 10-28 to 11-06):
| Date | Chart placements |
|---|---|
| 10-28 | Botswana and Tanzania Lifestyle Top Free #190 and #130 |
| 11-03 | Barbados Lifestyle Top Grossing #12, Uzbekistan Top Grossing #83, Czechia and Ukraine #180 and beyond |
| 11-05 | Barbados #27, Tanzania #37, Uzbekistan #84, Sri Lanka #97 |
| 11-06 | Barbados #37, Tanzania #59, Uzbekistan #102, Sri Lanka #113, plus free charts in two more countries |
The countries where it charts went from 2 to 6. Its total rating count in every store has stayed at 0. It has never made an overall chart in any store, and category charts in big markets like the US and UK never show it.
These charts have a low bar. Barbados has fewer than 300k people. On Nov 6 it was #37 in Top Grossing, sitting between Raya, Badoo-family apps, a blood pressure log and a dog-training app. Those are real earners in big markets, but here they crowd together, so a few single-digit daily subscription sales probably get you that rank (inference). Apple doesn't disclose revenue, so what it actually earns can't be known. Judging from zero ratings, the volume is very small.
The money path is an old playbook for this kind of app. People who come for "Doubao" open it and hit a paywall right away. They tap the 3-day trial, and many don't realize it isn't the official app; when the trial ends, they're charged $5.99 a week. Few people download it, but conversion is decent, which is why it has chart ranks without ratings. Picking Lifestyle is deliberate too: some copycats in the same batch sit in Productivity, but Lifestyle top-grossing in small countries is less crowded.
Where users come from
| Channel | What we see |
|---|---|
| Searching the brand term in the store | The main channel. The name puts "DouBao AI" first, so searching doubao in these stores surfaces it; the official app is unavailable in these stores |
| Demand created by others on TikTok | Creators in Southeast Asia and the Russian-speaking space spontaneously teach "how to download Doubao"; viewers go search the store |
| Small-country category top grossing | A few subscriptions get it charted, and the chart brings a bit more exposure |
| Its own ads and influencers | Not found. No one has mentioned it on X in nearly 30 days, and it has no promotion of its own on TikTok. Not finding it doesn't mean it isn't paid, but zero ratings don't look like large-scale paid acquisition (inference). |
The countries where it appears, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka and Botswana, have many Chinese people working on local engineering projects. Chinese-speaking users searching for Doubao may be part of its traffic (inference, unverified).
Who it's competing with
This business has two layers of competition: the real product users are actually looking for, and the copycats fighting over the same search term.
| Who | Launched | Scale (App Store, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doubao (ByteDance) | 2023-08 | China store 5.3M ratings | The real thing, listed only in mainland China and Hong Kong/Macau |
| Dola (formerly Cici, ByteDance's international version) | 2023-08 | Records in 81 stores, highest single-store rating count 65k; not in the US, mainland China or India | The official international version, but not named Doubao, so searching doubao may not surface it first |
| Xingchuang AI international version, Smart AI Assistant (Luke Carter) | 2026-05 | Top Grossing Lifestyle placements in about 45 stores; in the US store it ranks #1,345 for the search term doubao | The top player of the same playbook, more than 4 months earlier |
| Doubao International Edition (Jin Cheng He) | 2026-05 | Singapore Productivity Top Free #45 | Chinese name, filed under Productivity, targets Chinese users abroad |
| DouBao - Life Assistant (Yushu Wang) | 2026-06 | Lifestyle Top Grossing #58–68 in Kenya, Sri Lanka and Pakistan | Nearly the same product, launched 4 months earlier |
| DouBao AI (SHANNON VERONICA JONES) | 2026-07 | In Barbados and Tanzania, searching doubao ranks it above this app | The same account also has a CAD image-viewer app, looking like a shell account |
| Dola AI, "Dоlа АI" spelled with Cyrillic letters, etc. | 2026-09 / 10 | Small | Renamed to imitate ByteDance's international version |
On Android there are similar apps called Doubao AI with 10k+ downloads. At least 8 personal accounts are doing this, and the earliest started in March. It's not the first mover or the biggest; it's a latecomer in this wave of copycats.
Why now
Three things came together. Doubao has about 350M monthly active users in China, and this year it went viral on overseas TikTok again through Seedance video generation, so overseas users and overseas Chinese actively search for it. ByteDance didn't list Doubao outside mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Its international version is called Dola and isn't available in the US, so the brand term is unclaimed in overseas stores. And making a copycat costs almost nothing: a generic template, English copy, a personal account, Google Docs as the privacy policy, and if it's taken down, you just make another account.
If it were you
Verdict: Skip this one. The Doubao keyword has already been taken by at least 8 accounts. The leaders got in 4 months early and cover 45 stores, so if you enter now you'd land somewhere around #8 to #10. What's worth taking away is the keyword-hunting method, not the app itself.
Who it suits: Teams already making AI photo editing and AI chat templates with weekly subscriptions, who have ready-made packages and multiple developer accounts, and who can live with takedowns at any time. For them, this is a way to find search terms nobody has claimed.
Who it doesn't suit: Anyone trying to build a product that keeps users and earns reputation over time. Using someone else's trademark as your name risks removal under Apple's imitation and intellectual property rules (4.1, 5.2), or a complaint from ByteDance. Users who paid thinking it was official will eventually ask for refunds and leave bad reviews.
How to do it (if you're in the first group): Use this logic to scan domestic hit AI products that aren't listed overseas. Check whether people overseas on TikTok are teaching "how to download" it. If people teach it but the store turns up nothing, you've found an empty term. For each term, first count how many copycats already exist in the store; skip it if there are more than three or four. Pick Lifestyle, where the bar is low in small countries, and price like a weekly subscription with a 3-day trial.
How it gets customers: Almost entirely through store search, with demand created for you by other people's TikTok videos. No ads needed, and you can't afford volume beyond the brand term anyway.
Window: Depends on the real product. If ByteDance officially launches Doubao or Dola in these stores, or Apple clears out a round of copycats, this term is gone. The window for the Doubao term is being split by the 8 accounts ahead.
Signs you're reading it wrong: If it's still around after a month or two, the list of countries keeps growing, and it starts getting ratings, that means demand for the term is bigger than it looks and Apple isn't policing these copycat packages much, so latecomers still have some room. Conversely, if the leaders like Xingchuang AI get taken down first, the window is already closing.

- Inferred App Store search interception (brand term "doubao"): searching "doubao" in the us/bb/lk/gb stores returns it, while the official Doubao shows availability=false in those stores; the name puts "DouBao AI" first
- Inferred Demand created by others on TikTok: lots of Southeast Asian and Russian-language videos about "download Doubao" and "how to install Doubao on iPhone" (e.g. socheukong 150k views, huyenchinese 56k views), plus a Chinese-language trending topic about "Doubao can't be downloaded from the Apple Store"; this app shows no paid or influencer footprint of its own
- Verified Exposure from small-country category charts: only appears on Lifestyle charts in small stores like bb/tz/uz/lk/bw/mk, where a few subscriptions can get you charted
- Inferred Paid acquisition: no records in ad libraries; 0 ratings is too small a volume for large-scale paid acquisition

Bottom line
This isn't an app that succeeded on product. It's a store-search interception play that rides on a famous name. ByteDance's "Doubao" is listed only on the App Store in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, so searching "doubao / 豆包" in other storefronts doesn't surface the real app; instead, results are crowded with individual developers' "DouBao / 豆宝 International Edition" apps. This is one of the later and smaller ones. Run by an individual developer account, English-only, with a generic AI photo-editing and chat template and a 3-day trial converting to a weekly subscription, it broke through on small-country Lifestyle Top Grossing charts, which have very low thresholds. How far it actually "worked" is limited: 0 ratings across all stores, never charted on any country's overall chart, only on small-country category charts.
1. Basics
- Developer: Avery Wesley (individual account; only these 1 apps in the store). Copyright credit: YuanBay (recalled from the data card). EULA and privacy policy are public Google Docs (iTunes lookup sellerUrl).
- Release: the us storefront lookup shows a first-release date of 2026-09-03; bb/lk/gb and others show 2026-10-11 (different storefronts have different first-release dates, suggesting it launched in a few stores and expanded). Current version updated 1.2,2026-10-26; 78MB; English only; Lifestyle category; 4+. (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06)
- Features: AI photo enhancement, background removal, outpainting, AI filters, AI image generation, AI chat. The description opens by stating that AI Chat, ID photos, AI portrait styles, and AI art portraits (as shown in the screenshots) require a Premium auto-renewing subscription, with a 3-day free trial. Pricing (recalled from the data card): weekly $5.99 / monthly $8.99 / yearly $16.99.
- The "DouBao" in the name has nothing to do with the description. It doesn't use ByteDance's models and doesn't claim to be from ByteDance.
2. The data: how far it actually went

- Number of charting stores rose from 2 on 10-28 to 6 on 11-06 (data card daily_all_countries).
- Global rating count grew by 0 over 0,7 days; never charted on any country's overall chart; never appeared on category charts in major markets like us, cn, or gb.
- Threshold benchmark: 2026-11-06 In Barbados, it ranks 37 on the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart, with Raya (35), Badoo-family apps, Artera blood pressure tracker (38), and Woofz (39) right around it. These are real money-makers in big storefronts, but Barbados has under 300k people, so reaching #37 on its Top Grossing chart probably takes only single-digit daily subscription revenue (inferred, not verified). Apple doesn't disclose revenue, so actual earnings are unknown.
- 0 ratings plus a chart position means very few downloads, but a fair share of those users convert from trial to paid. Or the revenue comes from auto-charges when the 3-day trial ends, which is the normal pattern for this kind of weekly-subscription funnel.
3. Competitors: who else does the same thing
The "same thing" splits into two layers: first, the "Doubao" users actually want; second, the look-alike apps competing for the "doubao" search term in overseas stores.
The real thing
- Doubao (Beijing Chuntian Zhiyun, id 6459478672): launched 2023-08-24, cn-store rating count 5.3M (appstore library / iTunes search cn). The appstore library's availability table 2026-11-06 shows it's only available in cn and hk, and 20 major storefronts outside us/gb/jp/kr/tw/sg all have available=false. doubao-english.com (verified 2026-08-23) also says the official version is listed only on the App Stores of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
- Dola (formerly Cici, SPRING SG PTE. LTD., id6451431247): ByteDance's international version, launched 2023-08; records in 81 storefronts in the library, with the highest rating count of any store at 64,920; but it isn't listed in the US, mainland China, or India (doubao-english.com; dev.to article). It also appears in tz/uz/lk/bw/ke, where this app charts, ranking #50–127 on the Top Free chart.
- Web version doubao.com: overseas visitors are redirected to Dola / Cici (per explanations on Threads).

Generic big-tech AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, Grok) and generic AI photo-editing subscription apps are also substitutes, but they don't bid on this search term.
Conclusion: in this space, this app is neither first nor biggest. 星创 AI (May) and 豆宝国际版 (May) launched 4–5 months earlier and have more storefront coverage and ratings. It is a latecomer in this wave of "Doubao International Edition" look-alikes.
4. Growth levers: where users come from
- Store search hijacking (main channel, high confidence but inferred): iTunes search for “doubao” in the us, bb, lk, gb stores returns it, with nothing but big-tech AI apps and similarly named knockoffs above it; the real Doubao doesn't show up in these stores (availability table). The name starts with “DouBao AI” precisely to catch this search term.
- The demand was created for it on TikTok by others: a TikHub search for “doubao ai app” turns up many 2026 videos from creators in Southeast Asia and Russian-speaking regions titled “download Doubao fast” and “how to install Doubao on iPhone” (e.g. a Cambodian creator, socheukong, with 150k views on “Free Download DouBao 豆包 in App store”; a Vietnamese tutorial by iouyongg with 20k views; a Vietnamese video by huyenchinese with 56k views; Russian-language Seedance/doubao tagged videos). Chinese-language trending topics also include “why can't I download Doubao from the Apple App Store” (TikTok discover page), and the accelerator sixfast wrote a sponsored post titled “What to do if Doubao doesn't work overseas.” These users search their local App Store, don't find the official app, and tap the knockoff. The app itself has not been found running any TikTok or X ad campaigns or creator partnerships (x-radar found 0 posts for “DouBao AI” and “豆包 国际版” in the past 30 days).
- Cold start on small-country category charts: it appears in stores that are small Apple markets (Barbados, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Botswana, North Macedonia). In these stores, a few Lifestyle sales are enough to chart in the Top Grossing list, and the chart placement then brings some extra exposure. Many Chinese nationals work in these countries too (Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka and Botswana all have Chinese-funded construction projects), so Chinese-speaking users searching for Doubao is a plausible source of traffic (inference, not verified).
- “Customers also bought” shelf: in the us store's customers-also-bought section, the only related app is DouBao - Life Assistant (昱树 王). The rest are scattered Lifestyle apps like KenCharge, Boletus and Fermax. That suggests its download volume is too small for Apple's co-recommendation to kick in. The “cross-promotion matrix” the data card mentioned in its recall has little evidence behind it.
- Ads: the metaads, tiktokads and googleads libraries only track products on their watchlists, so finding nothing doesn't mean nothing was run. Given its 0 rating and the scale implied by $5.99 per week subscriptions, large-scale paid acquisition is unlikely (inference).
How the money comes in: a 3-day free trial → $5.99/week auto-renewal. Users come for “Doubao,” and many start the trial without realizing it isn't the official app, then get charged when it ends. A 0 rating means it hasn't got a good review prompt going, and it hasn't yet accumulated many bad reviews either.
5. Why it took off
- Platform gap: ByteDance hasn't put Doubao on App Stores outside mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Its international version was renamed Dola and isn't available in markets like the US, which leaves the brand search term unclaimed (availability table; doubao-english.com).
- Demand spillover: Doubao has roughly 350M monthly active users in China (per unwire.hk), and in 2026 it also went viral overseas on TikTok thanks to Seedance video generation. Overseas users and overseas Chinese actively search for it (TikHub search results).
- The cheapest possible product: a generic AI photo-editing and chat-template app, English only, Google Docs as the privacy policy, a personal developer account. Listing costs are minimal, and if one fails, you just switch accounts and try again (similar developers all run 1–2 apps from personal accounts).
- Low bar on small-country charts: a few weekly subscriptions can put an app on a category Top Grossing chart, which is why the recall model flagged a “0-rated app charting in the 6 Top Grossing list.”
6. Differentiation
No product differentiation. Against the real Doubao, it isn't Doubao and has none of ByteDance's models. Against the other knockoffs, the features are nearly identical (AI chat + photo/image generation). The only “difference” is the name spelling (“DouBao AI: Talk·Ask·Assistant,” all English, filed under Lifestyle rather than Productivity; Lifestyle Top Grossing charts are easier to crack in small markets than Productivity, a minor category-selection trick). It gets downloads from name borrowing and a search gap, not from differentiation.
7. How many people have seen it
- Almost nobody knows about it: no media or large X accounts have written about it, and x-radar has 0 posts. Revenue isn't public (TrustMRR and similar trackers wouldn't have it).
- But the “Doubao knockoff international version” play is already crowded: the library has at least 8 personal accounts doing it, the earliest starting in 2026-03, along with variants that mimic the Dola name and use Cyrillic letters to spell it. doubao-english.com specifically warns that “there are many counterfeits of the Doubao brand.”
8. What to borrow
- To find brands that are “hot in China but not listed in overseas stores,” check whether people on overseas TikTok are teaching “how to download” them. That's an unclaimed search term. Doubao, Jimeng, Yuanbao, Qianwen and Kling can all be scanned with this approach.
- When choosing a category, consider the small-country Top Grossing bar: Lifestyle is easier to chart in small markets than Productivity.
- Be clear about the risks: using someone else's trademark in your app name means Apple could remove it at any time for 4.1/5.2 (counterfeiting, IP infringement), or ByteDance could file a complaint. Weekly subscriptions plus users who think it's official means high refund and bad-review risk. This is a one-off arbitrage, not a business that compounds.
9. Still unclear
- Real revenue: it's unknown how much money the Top Grossing ranking corresponds to; at a 0 rating the volume should be very small.
- Whether it bought Apple Search Ads for the “doubao” keyword: no data.
- The data card's recall mentioned Monroe Wood's “DouBao AI: Creator Studio” and Jessica Smith's “Doubao AI: Pro Smart Assistant.” This time I couldn't find either app in iTunes search (us/gb/sg/tz/ng/my/vn) or in the library (only a fitness app under Jessica Smith's name appeared). They may have been removed or renamed; unverified.
- Whether YuanBay, Avery Wesley, Luke Carter and the other accounts are the same group: no evidence.
