Vegans only: an Italian dev turned a hit AI menu app into a vegan version, and it's on the Top Grossing chart with 141 ratings
What it is An AI weekly meal planner app for vegans: it plans a week of meals by taste and budget, builds a priced grocery list, turns meat dishes from TikTok into vegan ones, reads restaurant menus to tell you what to order, and scans barcodes to check if a product is vegan. It doesn't work without a subscription.
Why it's working It copies a generic template that already sold well and aims it at a group that worries about eating the wrong thing and will pay for help. A hard paywall starting at $7.99/week plus a little Meta ad spend lets a small user base hit a category chart with a modest bar.
BHow you could follow it Stop making a vegan version and pick a niche where a mistake has a real cost (halal, gluten-free, low FODMAP, diabetic). Keep the budget-based menu planning core, add the niche-specific features (menu photos, barcode scanning, rewriting TikTok recipes), go after the niche keywords in store search, and test with small Meta budgets and micro-influencers.

In 2026 summer, a wave of "AI writes your weekly meal plan + budget grocery list + doesn't work unless you pay" apps hit the top ten of the US Food & Drink chart. In September, an Italian developer turned the same thing into an app only for vegans, called Vego. It's small, with just 141 US ratings, but it's been on the Top Grossing chart for ten days. Below: what it does, where the users come from, where the money comes from, and whether you can follow this "generic template + narrow niche" approach.
A one-star review
2026 Sep 20, nine days after Vego launched, a US user left a one-star review on the App Store:
"Completely unusable without paying, what is this. This is obviously vibe coded. I'm now thinking about building an open-source vegan menu app myself, lol."
Two weeks later, on Oct 7, another user left a five-star review with a long write-up:
"This app has genuinely changed my life. I'm busy, I hate cooking, and I was sick of veggie nuggets and fries because I had no idea what else I could eat. After using it I'm willing to try new foods, I can be sure what I buy is actually vegan, and I've found restaurants with vegan options I'd never noticed... totally worth the price."
These two reviews tell the whole story: a one-person app, AI-generated, with a hard paywall; it solves a few very specific problems for a very specific group, and that group will pay.
What it is
The developer is JACOPO GIANNETTI, in Italy, and this is the only app under his name. It launched in Sep 11 and updated to version 1.2 in Oct 8. The first line of the store page makes the positioning clear:
"Going vegan rarely fails for lack of willpower. It fails on logistics: the supermarket, restaurant menus, and the meat-based recipe on TikTok. Vego handles all three."
The features map to those three problems, plus a ready-made template:
- Swipe to pick the week's meals: choose cuisines, enter what's in your kitchen, set a budget, then swipe left and right. Recipes are written by AI based on your inputs, and several dishes share ingredients so nothing rots in the fridge. After swiping, it merges everything into a grocery list sorted by supermarket aisle, with an estimated price on each item. This part is the same template as TapCook and mise.
- Turn TikTok / Instagram dishes vegan: tap share in TikTok, pick Vego, then keep scrolling. The converted version waits for you in the app: ingredients on the left, substitutions on the right, with a reason for each change. One user said, "It doesn't just give one fix, it gives several for every dish."
- Order from a restaurant menu: photograph the menu (up to 6 pages) and it tells you which dishes you can order as-is, which need a small change, and the exact words to say to the waiter.
- Barcode scan: scan a product in the supermarket and it tells you whether you can eat it and which ingredient is the problem (data from the open-source Open Food Facts).
There's also a small extra: the grocery list syncs in real time between two phones, such as a partner's or a roommate's, and appears on the lock screen and Dynamic Island.
It won't work without paying. The store page says "SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED", and the in-app purchases list 9 price points: weekly at $7.99 and $9.99, annual plans from $19.99 to $49.99 across six tiers, plus a $34.99 PRO tier. Its privacy policy says it uses Superwall to "display and test subscription offers", so all these tiers are price testing.
How much it grew
| 10-28 | 11-06 | |
|---|---|---|
| US cumulative ratings | 111 | 141 |
| New ratings in the last 7 days | — | 24 |
| Average rating | — | 4.66 |
| US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart | 57 ratings | 66 ratings (best over these ten days: #50 on 10-31) |
(App Store, US storefront.) On Oct 1 a review said "I want to find those 34 reviews to see for myself," so at three weeks after launch it had only about thirty ratings. It now adds 3 to 5 a day, and based on typical iOS rating rates, that suggests a few hundred new downloads a day (inferred). It hasn't charted on the overall chart and hasn't charted in other countries.
It reaches the Top Grossing chart because each user pays a lot, not because it has many users. The Food & Drink category chart's 50–70 rank threshold isn't high, so a few hundred weekly subscribers is probably enough (inferred; Apple doesn't publish revenue). Compare it with the generic version of the same template to see how small it is:
| App | Launched | US ratings (11-06) | New in the last 7 days | top grossing best rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TapCook: Budget Meal Plans | 2026-07-17 | 6,707 | +1,017 | 4 |
| mise - meal planner | 2026-06-10 | 4,566 | +506 | 3 |
| Potto - meal planner | 2026-06-12 | 2,360 | +24 | 8 |
| NeatEat | 2026-07-17 | 1,437 | +49 | 19 |
| Whipp | 2026-06-12 | 711 | +176 | 6 |
| Herbi | 2026-06-16 | 64 | +5 | 92 |
| Vego | 2026-09-11 | 141 | +24 | 50 |
It came two or three months later and is an order of magnitude smaller. It didn't open a new category. It took a template already proven to make money and aimed it at a narrower group of people.
Where users come from
Meta ads, small budget. Searching "Vego vegan meal planner" in the Meta ad library (US, currently running) shows 3 ads, all started in Oct 8, the same day as version 1.2. The copy reads:
"Pick what you want this week, set your budget, and Vego plans your meals and grocery list in seconds. No more standing in the aisle wondering what to make."
Its privacy policy says that once users consent to tracking, it uses AppsFlyer to send install and subscription data back to ad platforms like Meta; the store's privacy label also lists "data used to track you". Only 3 ads are running, so the budget is probably small. Notably, the homepage of its website says "no ads, no tracking", which contradicts the privacy policy.
Vegan micro-influencers on TikTok. Two accounts posted in early October: @jessfrazer (26k followers, normally posts vegan content) posted "I love you Vego omg" on Oct 4 with 1,202 views; @sophrickingamazinglol (2,056 followers, vegan creator) posted "that's dinner sorted x #Vego" on Oct 1 with 2,651 views, and another post carried #targetaudience in its tags. Neither is marked as an ad, but the timing overlaps with Meta spend starting, so it looks like a free-subscription-for-a-small-fee collab (inferred). View counts are low and it's not bringing in many people. The onboarding survey asks "how did you hear about Vego (TikTok, App Store, friend)", which suggests TikTok is a channel it wants.
Store search. The title and subtitle are "Vegan Meal Planner" and "Grocery List & Plant Recipes". Searching "vegan meal planner" on the US App Store, the top results are older apps with few ratings and generic menu apps (11-06 checked), so almost nobody is bidding on that term. Its actual rank is unknown (unverified).
What I didn't find: press coverage, "best vegan apps" roundups (there's a 2026-year-old roundup from Sep 29, but I didn't count it), Reddit, X, or Product Hunt. Very few people know about it.
Where the money comes from
Subscription only, no free tier, no ads. The AI part uses Google Gemini, the backend is Firebase, barcode data comes from an open-source library, and TikTok / Instagram videos are pulled by a third-party downloader (per the website's privacy policy). One person can finish a build with these off-the-shelf pieces in two months, at low cost.
The cost shows in reviews. Both one-star reviews hit this point: one is the "obviously vibe coded" line above; another from Oct 30 says "The setup asks a ton of questions and then aggressively pitches an app I already installed. It's full of AI-generated images, looks lazy and untrustworthy. I never even got to a point where it worked." A hard paywall with a long onboarding survey is standard for this kind of template app. It can raise revenue, but it also turns some people away.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | What it is | Scale (US App Store) | Compared to Vego |
|---|---|---|---|
| TapCook / mise / Potto | Generic AI menu, same template | 2,360–6,707 ratings, top 10 on the chart | An order of magnitude bigger, but doesn't handle eating out as a vegan or reading ingredients |
| HappyCow | Finds nearby vegan restaurants, from 2011 a year, $4.99 one-time purchase | 32,676 rating | An old staple for vegans; Vego reads the menu of any restaurant |
| Fig: Food Scanner & Recipes | Scan + restaurants + recipes, covers allergies, low FODMAP and other restrictions | 16,805 rating | Closest in features, but no AI weekly menu or budgeting |
| Yuka, Vegan Pocket, a pile of "Is it Vegan" apps | Barcode scanning only | Yuka 102k, Vegan Pocket 5,255, most others single digits | Single tool |
| SO VEGAN | A creator's own fixed recipe library, the founder has 208k TikTok followers | 298 rating | Added a weekly menu and grocery list in Oct 15, moving in this direction |
| Recipe-saving apps like ReciMe | Can import recipes from TikTok / IG | ReciMe 328k ratings, #1 on Food & Drink Top Grossing | won't turn it vegan |
A few new vegan tools launched around the same time: Plantchemy (said on TikTok in Nov 5 that Android is live, iPhone is coming), Vex Vegan (running TikTok ads in November). Haven't seen anyone building a direct copy of Vego.
The full stack of vegan + AI budget weekly meal plan + rewriting social media recipes + menu ordering + barcode scanning: as far as I can see on iOS, Vego is the only one doing all of it.
If it were you
B: Worth a test. The opportunity is there, but this single sample is too small and the ceiling looks low. What's certain: a proven generic AI subscription template, pointed at a group with a strong identity and a fear of "eating wrong", still got 141 ratings and charted in its category, and the search terms and ad audience aren't crowded. What's not certain: how big this business can get. Vego's own generic version is only a tenth of its size, and retention isn't visible yet.
Good fit for: solo indie devs who can build "AI generation + hard paywall + price testing" in a month or two and are willing to spend a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a month testing small Meta budgets.
Not a fit for: people who won't run ads and only want organic store traffic, and people hoping for one big hit. A narrow audience means a built-in ceiling; this is a small business that makes money.
How to build it: don't make another vegan version. Vego already has that, and SO VEGAN is moving in the same direction. Follow its approach but swap the audience: halal, gluten-free (celiac), low-FODMAP, diabetic, pregnancy, kidney diet... Pick a group for whom "getting it wrong has a cost" and who will pay to avoid mistakes. Keep the core of "budget weekly meal plan + grocery list" and add two or three features specific to that group: photograph a menu to ask what's safe to order, scan a label to check ingredients, and turn a dish from TikTok into a version they can eat. The social recipe rewrite is especially worth copying: via the iOS share sheet, time spent scrolling TikTok becomes uses of your app. You could also change language: Vego's interface is English-only and has only charted in the US. Vegan audiences in German, French and Spanish don't have a matching product (inference, not verified country by country).
How to get users: On day one, wire up price testing (Superwall-type) and attribution (AppsFlyer-type), and send install and subscription data back to Meta. Put audience keywords in the title ("Halal Meal Planner", "Gluten Free Meal Planner") to capture search terms nobody is fighting over. Then find a few micro-creators in this niche with a few thousand to tens of thousands of followers, give them free access or a small payment, and have them post "saw a dish → turned it into something I can eat in one tap". Add a question to the onboarding survey asking where they heard about us.
Deadline: These AI meal planner apps launched in a cluster from June to September 2026. The generic versions are already crowded, and the niche-audience versions are only starting to appear. Locking in search terms and ad placements for an audience before early 2027 is fairly safe. Around New Year's, "healthy eating for the new year" is the best paid-acquisition window of the year, so catching it would be ideal (inference).
Where the read could be wrong: ① Vego's ratings stalled at two or three hundred by December and it dropped off the top charts, which suggests niche paying users can't carry paid acquisition, so this path only supports a small side income for one person. ② Big players like TapCook and mise adding "vegan / halal / gluten-free modes" would erase the niche advantage. ③ On the flip side, if Vego's ratings accelerate clearly after more ad spend and it reaches the top 20 of Top Grossing, that means the niche is bigger than expected and it's worth moving faster.

Neither is labeled as an ad, so whether they were paid is unclear. Some store reviews also say they heard about it elsewhere.
- Inferred App Store search (vegan meal planner and similar terms): The title and subtitle are "Vegan Meal Planner / Grocery List & Plant Recipes". Searching "vegan meal planner" in the US store, the top results are older apps with few ratings or generic meal planners. There's no dominant vegan-specific competitor for this term (iTunes search 11-06). No keyword ranking data, so I haven't verified its actual position.
- Verified Paywall A/B testing to lift revenue per user: The in-app purchases list 9 price points: weekly at $7.99/$9.99, annual at $19.99–$49.99 across 6 tiers, plus a Vego PRO tier at $34.99. The privacy policy says Superwall is used to "present and test subscription offers". The store description says "SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED".
Why Vego: Vegan Meal Planner (iOS 6801582860) works
In short: it's the vegan vertical version of the summer 2026 batch of "AI weekly meal plan + budget grocery list + hard paywall" apps (TapCook, mise, Potto, Whipp). It adds three needs specific to vegans: turning meat recipes from TikTok/IG into vegan ones, reading restaurant menus to know what to order, and scanning barcodes in the grocery store to check ingredients. Starting in Oct 8 it ran a small Meta ad budget, then had a few vegan micro-creators post videos. On the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, which isn't hard to crack, it reached #50–78. Volume is still small (140 ratings), so it's too early to call it a success. What's clear is that this template can sell weekly subscriptions even to a narrow audience.
1. The basics
| items | Data | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Developer | JACOPO GIANNETTI (individual, Italy; this is the only app under this name) | App Store, hellovego.com/terms |
| Launched | 2026-09-11; current version 1.2 (2026-10-08) | iTunes lookup |

| Charts | 10-28 through 11-06, it charted every day on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart (category 6023). Best rank 57/78/55/50/59/77/78/61/55/66. Never charted on overall, and never in other countries. | appstore library, chart_rank |
| Pricing | "SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED": all core features need a subscription. In-app purchases come in 9 tiers: weekly at $7.99/$9.99, annual at $19.99/24.99/29.99/39.99/44.99/49.99, plus a Vego PRO tier at $34.99. | App Store product page |
| Tech stack | Google Gemini generates the content, Firebase, Superwall (paywall display and price testing), AppsFlyer (attribution), Open Food Facts (barcodes), and a third-party downloader to pull TikTok/IG videos. | hellovego.com/privacy |
| Language | Interface is English-only; generated content supports English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese. | Store description |
Ratings grow by 3–5 a day. Based on typical iOS review rates, new downloads are probably a few hundred a day (inference, not verified). The app holds its chart position because of the hard paywall and weekly pricing, not because it has a big user base.
2. Competitors: who's doing the same thing
1. The generic version of the same template (launched together in summer 2026, all with hard paywalls)
| App | Launched | US ratings (11-06) | 7 new in the last day | Best Food & Drink Top Grossing rank |

| Vego | 2026-09-11 | 140 | +24 | 50 (66 current) |
(appstore library app_profile, US store)
These apps grew through TikTok UGC. Potto had one UGC video, "I wish I found this sooner", with 29M views (@madimugc444). TapCook had one with 208k views (@smallbizshy) (TikHub). Vego launched 2–3 months later and is an order of magnitude smaller. It's a vegan vertical version of this template, not a new category.
2. Established vegan-focused products
- HappyCow (2011, $4.99 paid, US 32,676 ratings, #3 on Food & Drink Top Paid): finds nearby vegan restaurants. Vego doesn't search for restaurants. It reads the menu at any restaurant and tells you which dishes you can order as-is and which ones need a request to the server.
- Fig: Food Scanner & Recipes (2021,16,805 ratings): the closest in features (scanning + restaurants + recipes), but it covers every restriction including allergies and low-FODMAP. Vego is vegan-only and adds AI weekly meal plans and budgeting.
- Yuka (102k ratings), Vegan Pocket (5,255), and a dozen "Is it Vegan" scanner apps (most in single-digit ratings): scanning only.
- Fixed recipe library / creator apps: SO VEGAN (298 ratings; founders Roxy + Ben have 208k followers on TikTok; 2026-10-15 just added weekly menus and a shopping list), Pick Up Limes (1,149), Deliciously Ella (7,460), Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen (12,694), Food Monster (1,003), Oh She Glows (12,307, paid); on the web there are subscription menus like Forks Meal Planner, PlantYou, Ela Vegan, and Rich Roll's Plantpower Meal Planner.
- Nutrient-based menus: Eat This Much (22,188 ratings, with a dedicated vegan page).
- Recipe-collection apps: ReciMe (328k ratings, Food & Drink bestseller #1), Pepper, Honeydew and others can import recipes from TikTok/IG, but they don't convert them to vegan.
- Same-period newcomers: Plantchemy (TikTok @tordopollovegano 11-05 says Android is live, iPhone coming soon), Vex Vegan (running TikTok ads 11-05), Piante, Im Vegan (6 ratings), Elly's Plate (creator-led app, launched 9-12).
Takeaway: the combination of "vegan + AI weekly menu by budget + rewriting social media recipes + ordering + scanning" has no second full-stack competitor I could find on iOS. Searching "vegan meal planner" in the US App Store, the top results are old apps with few ratings and generic meal-planning apps (iTunes search 11-06); almost nobody is bidding on this term.
3. Growth: where users come from
- Meta paid ads (confirmed)
- Meta Ad Library, US, currently running. Searching "Vego vegan meal planner" shows 3 ads (Library IDs 28947213521602256, 1497982775578994, 3143007795897408), all started 2026-10-08, launched the same day as the 1.2 version. Copy: "Pick what you're craving this week, set your budget, and Vego builds your meal plan and grocery list in seconds. No more standing in the aisle wondering what to cook."
- Privacy policy §2.4: after users grant ATT, AppsFlyer passes IDFA and install and subscription events back to "the platforms where we run our own ads (e.g. Meta)". The store privacy label lists "Data used to track you: Identifiers".
- The homepage, however, says "No ads, no tracking" and "No App Tracking Transparency prompt", which doesn't match the privacy policy or the store label.
- Only 3 ads are running, so the budget is small. Our metaads library isn't tracking this advertiser.
- TikTok vegan micro-creators (confirmed present, nature unclear)
- @jessfrazer (26k followers, usually posts vegan and atheism content): 10-04 "I love you Vego omg #vegan #Recipe #app" 1,202 views, 10-07 670 views, 10-09 579 views.
- @sophrickingamazinglol (2,056 followers, vegan creator): 10-01 "that's dinner sorted x #Vego" 2,651 views, 10-06 "cant gatekeep vego" 1,505 views, 10-21 2,025 views, tagged #targetaudience.
- Neither is labeled as an ad, but the timing clusters in early October, the same period Meta ads started. It looks like a round of subscriptions and small payments to micro-creators (inference). View counts are very low and bring little reach.
- The onboarding survey asks "where did you hear about Vego (e.g. TikTok, App Store, a friend)" (privacy policy §2.1), suggesting TikTok is one of its target channels.
- The @app_vego on TikTok is a ride-hailing app in Benin, unrelated to this one.
- App Store search (inference): the title and subtitle are stuffed with "Vegan Meal Planner / Grocery List & Plant Recipes", a term with weak competition. No keyword ranking data, unverified.
- Paywall monetization: Superwall tests 9 price points, weekly $7.99–$9.99. This step brings no users, but it determines whether a small number of users can still push it up the bestseller charts.
- Not seen: media coverage, listicles (e.g. yumveganlunchideas' "Best Vegan Meal Planning Apps 2026" from 9-29 doesn't include it), Reddit, X (x-radar searches for hellovego / vego app returned nothing relevant), Product Hunt, free-promo chart pushes, incentivized reviews.
4. Why it took off (and how high it went)
- Ready-made template: comparable generic versions reached 3–8 in the US Food & Drink bestseller chart, already proving that "AI menu + grocery list + budget" sells weekly subscriptions. Vego swapped in a different audience.
- Identity-driven audience with specific pain points: the listing frames the pitch as "Failing at vegan isn't a willpower problem, it's a logistics problem: the supermarket, restaurant menus, meat-based recipes on TikTok." Reviews say the same: "I used to only eat veggie nuggets and fries... now I'm willing to try new restaurants", "You can open any recipe online and make it vegan, with several options", "Saving recipes from Instagram works great". One review even says "when more people are giving up veganism, we should support vegan projects more", so identity is also helping sell it.
- iOS share sheet pulls in social content: see a meat dish on TikTok → share it to Vego → keep scrolling, and the vegan version is waiting in your inbox. Social media recipe traffic turns directly into app sessions.
- Pricing: hard paywall, weekly pricing, Superwall price testing, so each user pays more, and a few hundred paying users is enough to hold a mid-tier spot on the category bestseller chart.
- Chart threshold: reaching #50–#78 in the US Food & Drink bestseller chart doesn't take much revenue (inference; Apple doesn't publish revenue, and I didn't verify exact figures).
5. What the differentiation is, and whether it explains the breakout
- Differentiation: generic meal-planning apps don't cover ordering at restaurants or checking ingredients in the supermarket for vegans; vegan apps are either fixed recipe libraries or single-purpose tools. Vego is the first vegan app I found that packs budget-based AI weekly menus + rewriting social media recipes + ordering + scanning into one subscription, and it uses Live Activities for a real-time shared shopping list between two people.
- Is it the reason: yes, that's why it reached the bestseller chart. The niche term is cheap to buy and easy to find, and people who are afraid of "eating wrong" will pay for a weekly subscription. But the narrowness also caps it: 140 ratings, only slightly better than Herbi, the weakest of the generic ones, and an order of magnitude behind TapCook and mise. Looking at it now, it's a small business that makes money, not a hit.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Still little known: no media, listicles, Reddit or X discussion; revenue isn't public; only two small accounts have posted about it on TikTok.
- Copycats: none specifically copying it. Active players in the same niche: SO VEGAN added weekly menus and a shopping list in October; Plantchemy and Vex Vegan are new vegan tools.
VII. What others can borrow
- Take the proven generic AI subscription template and apply it to a narrow, identity-driven audience that will pay to avoid mistakes (vegan, halal, gluten-free, low-FODMAP, pregnancy, diabetes), then add 2–3 scenarios specific to that audience (dining out, scanning, rewriting recipes).
- Use the iOS share sheet to catch content seen on TikTok/IG, so what people scroll past on social media becomes content inside the app.
- Set up Superwall price testing and AppsFlyer-to-Meta postbacks on day one, ask about the source in onboarding, and use a small Meta ad budget plus micro-creators to validate the narrow audience.
- One person (or a small team) built it in two months with Gemini + Firebase, at low cost.
8. What's still uncertain
- Actual revenue and Meta spend (the ad library doesn't show spend).
- Whether the two TikTok creators were paid partnerships.
- Where terms like "vegan meal planner" actually rank in store search.
- Subscription retention: it's newly launched, and most ratings were left on the week of onboarding; one 4-star review says "recipes could be better".
- The recall card's claim of an "official IG account with 639 followers" is unverified.
- Whether the founder is the Italian data scientist Jacopo Giannetti on LinkedIn (name matches, unverified).
- Forks Over Knives and Mealime don't show up in US store search; unclear whether they were delisted or renamed.
