A paper frog with 950k views: VanDraw takes a different route in the most crowded drawing category
What it is An app where you point your phone camera at a sheet of white paper, project an image outline onto it, and people who can't draw trace it with a pencil.
Why it took off A batch of TikTok drawing accounts post the #VanDraw series daily (Roblox avatars, BL manga, paper squishies). Commenters order, the next video follows their request, and this brand without keyword stuffing got carried out that way, with most of the volume on Android.
BHow you could follow Stop building AR tracing and copy its acquisition format instead: find a batch of craft and drawing accounts to tag your label in "What's next?" request series, and shift the product toward physical paper play like paper squishies, selling to parents and teachers rather than to kids who can't pay.

In October 26, a TikTok account called simpleartjournal posted "Frog squishy 🐸 What's next?" with #vandrawsquishy as the first tag. By November 6 the video had 956k views. VanDraw is an AR tracing drawing app whose features don't differ much from dozens of similar ones. It had 218k installs on Google Play two months after launch, thanks to a batch of "drawing accounts" on TikTok posting daily and taking orders in comments. Below: what it is, where the volume comes from, how it makes money, whether it can be followed, and if so, which part to follow.
A paper-squishy account that swapped in a new tag
simpleartjournal wasn't created for VanDraw. In mid-September it was still posting Spider-Man fan art and "DIY Oreo Butter Squishy". From late September to mid-October it posted "Emoji Squishy" daily: draw an emoji on paper, color it, cut it out, stuff it with cotton, and make a squeezable paper toy. The caption was always "What's next?", and the next post was "Replying to @someone" making whatever was requested. Back then individual videos got tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand views, with only #papercraft #papersquishy as tags.
From October 26, the same format, now led by #vandrawsquishy: a frog at 956k, a little ghost at 597k (10-27), a watermelon at 252k (10-29), a burger at 188k (10-31). View counts are what 11-06 saw on TikTok.
Five days later, on November 1, VanDraw shipped version 1.0.9 with "Paper Squishies": in the app you trace, color, cut, stuff, and squeeze, and a "surprise bag" opens each day to collect series. First a craft account adopted the tag, then the product added a feature with the same name. Whether the account was a paid partnership or the company's own is not visible from outside (inference).
What it actually is
Prop your phone on a stack of books and point the camera at a blank sheet of paper; the outline of the image "appears" on the paper, and you trace it with a pencil. The first line of the store page reads "Ever wished you could draw like your favorite artists? With VanDraw, you can — no talent required". Inside there's a library (anime, characters, animals), photo-to-line-art conversion, locking and transparency, plus something rare in this category: voice-guided lessons, where each next stroke lights up on the paper and a voice explains how to draw it.
The developer is VanDraw Limited in Hong Kong, with this one app under its name. Launched on iOS late August, Android Sep 8. Category: Education. Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian.
Numbers: the volume is on Android; iOS is the small share
Google Play installs:
| Date | installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 118,914 | 4,108 |
| 11-02 | 179,374 | 6,343 |
| 11-06 | 218,203 | 7,693 |
7 days +99k, rating 4.58.
iOS is much smaller. US store ratings went from 405 (10-28) to 599 (11-06), adding 7–23 a day, rating 4.7. Best US Education free-chart rank was #120 (11-02), then it dropped out of the top 200. It has charted in 100 Education charts, but the good ranks are in small markets: #3 in Grenada, #10 in Anguilla, #14 in Czechia. It has never made an overall or Top Grossing chart in a major country. After the US, the most ratings come from Mexico, France and Saudi Arabia, which matches the Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian content.
Against its peers the volume is modest: in the same week Artrace on Play added +890k and AR Drawing: Sketch & Paint added +260k. But since May 2026, the 30 similar apps newly launched on iOS have only 76 with ratings above single digits. VanDraw is one of the better performers in that batch.
Where the volume comes from: a batch of daily-posting drawing accounts that take comments as requests
Search #vandraw on TikTok and you find a set of drawing accounts that only got active after September, with a few hundred to a few thousand followers each, all in a very uniform format:
- john.arts.drawing (about 5,800 followers): every post is "Replying to @someone drawing daily roblox avatars #Vandraw", drawing the Roblox avatar of whoever is named in the comments. 10-23 that one got 13k views and 297 comments, and the comment section becomes the next topic.
- jenny_sketchbook (about 4,000 followers): BL manga couples, every post ends with "who's next?", top post 177k.
- draw4chilll: black silhouette memes, a few thousand to over twenty thousand per post.
- eliot.jean6: Pierrot characters, 9-21 one post got 235k.
- The official @vandrawapp account has only a few hundred followers and posts Halloween characters with "How to draw…".
The videos are the product demo itself: phone propped on paper, tracing lines, finished drawing. The topics are all teen-traffic subjects (Roblox, meme pics, BL, horror movie characters, squishes), which fits the app's 12+ age rating. Most of these accounts have empty bios or a line like "Follow me if you like drawing", and their creation dates line up with the app's launch. On Instagram there's also @vandraw.collabs, whose posts open with "Hi! VanDraw here — and I'm Bella", which looks like an intake page for creator partnerships. So the most likely explanation is paid influencers plus self-built alt accounts (inferred). On Facebook there's a batch of new pages with close numeric IDs posting Reels that say "…with VanDraw App".
Two details suggest the traffic really comes from video, not store search:
- The official FAQ has a dedicated entry, "Is it VanDraw or OneDraw? Some people type OneDraw when they look it up". Users are searching for the name they heard in the videos.
- The app name is just "VanDraw", with no stack of "AR Drawing / Trace / Sketch" keywords. The category leader Artrace's full name is "Artrace: AR Drawing & Sketch", which relies on store search plus paid acquisition. VanDraw goes the other way.
Paid ads can't be looked up, but not finding them doesn't mean there were none. There is no coverage of it in the media, on X or on Reddit, and nobody has posted its revenue.
Money: subscriptions, but the users are kids who don't want to pay
Free download, VanDraw Pro subscription, short plans at $5–9, a long plan at $34.99, plus a lifetime one-time purchase at $29 and $50. In-app purchases on Play: $4.99–49.99. Pricing is about the same as competitors.
The problem is the users. In recent App Store reviews, nearly all the complaints are about the paywall:
"I'm not wasting 7 dollars just to trace pictures" (US store, 1 star, 10-21) "$7 a month? No way I'm paying all that to trace images a little better" (US store, 1 star, 10-01) "I like it but I have to pay but it's good but I can't pay" (US store, 2 star, 10-23)
There are good reviews too, and they hit what it wants to sell: "I never was a fan of art since I always drew poorly, but once I downloaded VanDraw I now enjoy art" (10-13), "Es una app muy buena para hacer Squishys" (10-31).
The content pulls in teenagers, but teenagers don't have money. iOS hasn't made a Top Grossing chart in any major country, Play shows no revenue, and from the outside it's not clear whether it's making money now.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How VanDraw differs |
|---|---|---|
| Artrace: AR Drawing & Sketch | Play 64.8M installs, 7 days +890k; iOS US 79k ratings | Category leader. Keyword titles, store search and paid acquisition. |
| AR Drawing: Sketch & Paint | Play 37.1M; iOS 96k ratings | A veteran for 2023 years; copy is nearly identical |
| PicTrace: AR Drawing & Sketch | iOS 60k ratings, #16 in US category Top Grossing | Monetizes well. VanDraw hasn't made Top Grossing. |
| ARtie Lab | Play 1.97M, 7 days +95k | New entrant, growth close to VanDraw's, keyword-led approach |
| Draw Anime and other anime-focused volume apps | Play 6.63M, 7 days +240k | Targets the same anime fans, but a keyword tool |
| Da Vinci Eye, SketchAR | iOS 12k / 10k ratings | Aimed at people who can already draw. SketchAR also has a free web version. |
The conclusion is simple: the features aren't the difference, distribution is. Rivals rely on store search and paid acquisition. VanDraw spreads a memorable name through a TikTok content format it can post on daily.
If it were you
Verdict: don't build another AR tracing app. The category's top players have tens of millions of installs, and newcomers have dozens. Two things are worth taking: the acquisition playbook of comment-driven serial content plus a network of drawing accounts, and paper squishies, which VanDraw has just touched but not developed.
Who it suits: teams that can run a TikTok small-account network and find dozens of cheap small artists or craft creators; people who have made kids' or teen craft or stationery content.
Who it doesn't suit: people who only build features and count on store search; people who want only the English market but can't afford creator fees. At the product level you have no moat at all. If distribution falls short, you're just another new app with single-digit ratings.
How to do it:
- Pick a specific "physical paper" play, not the broad term "tracing". Paper squishies are already proven: simpleartjournal's single emoji-squishy video got hundreds of thousands of views before any app was attached, so the subject has demand. Build a dedicated squishy app: template library (food, animals, holidays, IP memes), line tracing, coloring guides, cut lines, and a new design every day.
- Change who pays. VanDraw's users are kids who can't afford $7 a month. The same thing sold to parents and teachers makes more sense: "make one with your kid this weekend", "craft class materials pack", an annual subscription or one-time purchase, plus printable PDF templates.
- Change the language. VanDraw already covers Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian. I haven't seen similar TikTok content for the craft and stationery communities in Japanese, Korean, German or French inferred.
How to acquire users: copy VanDraw's format. Each account does one series, ends with "What's next?", and the next post is made "Replying to @someone" from the comments, one a day, with your app name in the tags. First find ten to twenty small accounts (a few hundred to a few thousand followers) that already make craft or drawing content, and pay them to add your tag to their existing series. simpleartjournal's format is identical before and after adding the tag; only the tag changes. The app name should be short and easy to say, because users hear it in the video and then search for it.
When to move: paper squishies peaked in autumn 2026, with Halloween and Christmas as two topic highs. Launching before Christmas catches this wave. How long the trend lasts, nobody knows, and entering after early spring is too late inferred.
What would show you're wrong: if by December VanDraw's weekly new installs on Play fall below tens of thousands, the drawing-account network was only a short burst. If squishy video views outside #vandrawsquishy are also falling, the trend is over. If the craft accounts you hire don't bring in hundreds of installs a day within two weeks of adding the tag, this route won't work in your language, so stop spending.

Research date 2026-11-06. Storefronts checked: appstore library full sweep (102 storefronts charted in app_day), focusing on us, mx, fr, gb, de, ph; full googleplay library; ad libraries (metaads, tiktokads); TikTok (TikHub), X (x-radar), Jina/Exa/Brave web search.
One line
VanDraw is an "AR tracing drawing" app: point the phone camera at a blank sheet, overlay an image outline on the paper, and trace it with a pencil. Its category is a red ocean that was saturated long ago (leader Artrace has 64.8M installs on Play). It didn't win on novelty. It won through a network of TikTok/Instagram/Facebook "drawing accounts" and serialized UGC (Roblox avatars, black silhouettes, BL/anime couples, "who's next" request posts) that carried the brand name, then it added features riding the paper squishy trend of 2026 fall. Growth is mainly on Android; iOS is a small slice.

2. Growth data
Android is the main engine (googleplay library app_day):
| Date | installs | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-29 | 118,914 | 4,108 |
| 2026-11-02 | 179,374 | 6,343 |
| 2026-11-06 | 218,203 | 7,693 |
+99,289 installs in the last 7 days (installs_gain_7d), reaching 218k 59 days after launch. Play is currently charting in 21 storefronts; best rank was #26 in the Philippines Education free chart.
iOS is much smaller (appstore library app_day):
- US ratings count 405 (10-28) → 500 (11-03) → 599 (lookup 11-06), adding 7–23 per day. Best US Education free chart rank was #120 (11-02); after 11-03 it dropped out of the top 200.
- Across all storefronts it appeared on the Education category chart in 102 storefronts, but the best ranks are all small markets: #3 Grenada, #10 Anguilla, #13 British Virgin Islands, #14 Czechia, #21 Russia. It never made any storefront's overall chart (except Grenada's overall free chart at #121), and never any overall top-grossing chart. Category top-grossing appeared only in small markets (Cyprus #71, Bahrain #93, etc.).
- The data card's "total_ratings dropping from 1,333 to 483" doesn't mean ratings fell. The stat only sums ratings from storefronts charting that day; starting 11-04, the US storefront (the one with the most ratings) dropped off the chart, so the sum collapsed. Real US ratings are still rising.
- Second-most ratings come from Mexico (119), then France (74) and Saudi Arabia (67), consistent with the Spanish/Portuguese/Indonesian localization and the audience for its TikTok content.
Against peers: over the same period on Play, Artrace gained +890k in 7 days, AR Drawing: Sketch & Paint +260k, Draw Anime +240k, ARtie Lab +95k. VanDraw's +99k is near the top among new entrants, but still an order of magnitude behind the leader. On iOS, Artrace added 1,908 ratings in 7 days and AR Drawing 621; VanDraw's US store is about 120.
3. Competitors
This category (AR tracing / trace drawing) has been flooded with utility-app factory clones since 2023; on Play, dozens of similar apps have passed 100k installs.
| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How VanDraw differs |

VanDraw skips the keyword stuffing and relies on brand content. |
| AR Drawing: Sketch & Paint(Digital Solutions Technologies) | iOS / Android | 2023-05 | iOS 95,683 ratings; Play 37.1M | Veteran keyword-driven app; has an official site ar-drawing.com with copy nearly identical to VanDraw's |

| Da Vinci Eye: AR Trace & Draw | iOS | 2016-06 | iOS 12,123 ratings, category top-grossing #35 | Veteran paid tool aimed at people who can already draw. VanDraw targets people who "can't draw" and teens. |
| SketchAR / sketchar.io | iOS / web | 2017 | iOS 9,873 ratings; free web version with no sign-up | Has a web version usable right away; VanDraw is app-only |
| ARtie Lab: AR Drawing & Sketch(TenetApps) | iOS / Android | 2025-11 / 2026-05 | iOS 6,301 ratings; Play 1.97M, +95k in 7 days | Also a new entrant, with scale and growth close to VanDraw's but a year earlier |
| Draw Anime - AR Drawing Sketch and other anime-oriented apps | Android | 2025-10 | Play 6.63M, 7 days +240k | Also courts anime fans; VanDraw adds voice-guided lessons and the "squishy" play pattern |
| Easy Draw / AR Draw Sketch / Sketch Photo and other mass-produced clones | Android | 2025-12 – 2026-04 | 1.7M – 19M each | Typical utility-app matrix with keyword names; VanDraw is a single brand |
| iOS peers newly launched 2026 May | iOS | 2026-05 – 10 | 30 or more in the library; the most-rated is AR Drawing: Sketch & Trace (09-17) with 76 ratings, the rest single digits | The vast majority never took off; VanDraw is among the best performers in this batch |
| Big-company features | — | — | No native Apple/Google equivalent feature found | — |
Bottom line: VanDraw's core features (camera overlay tracing, photo-to-line-art, locking/transparency) are essentially no different from competitors.
4. Growth tactics (evidence)
- TikTok drawing-account network + serialized UGC (confirmed, main channel). Searching TikHub for "vandraw" and "vandraw app" turns up a batch of "drawing accounts" active since 2026-09, with a few hundred to a few thousand followers, posting regularly with #VanDraw in a highly uniform format:
- john.arts.drawing (5,812 followers): "drawing daily roblox avatars #Vandraw", one post a day, replies to comments with requests, 2k–55k views per post;
- draw4chilll (505 followers): "Black figure #VanDraw #natehandgesture", a black silhouette meme, 0.8k–27k views per post;
- jenny_sketchbook (3,979 followers): BL/comic couples "who's next?", top post 177k;
- memcanva (2,229 followers, bio says USA): meme character "30 min | next?", top post 290k;
- simpleartjournal (7,653 followers), fili_sketches: #vandrawsquishy paper squishies, top post 83k;
- eliot.jean6: Pierrot drawing #vandraw, 235k views (2026-09-21);
- Official account @vandrawapp (498 followers, 17 posts): Halloween characters, "How to draw…" and "Who's next?". Nearly all of these accounts have empty or templated bios ("Hi", "Follow me if you like drawing") with 28–56 posts, and their creation dates line up with the app launch, which fits a paid UGC creator / self-built small-account matrix playbook. Instagram has a dedicated collab account @vandraw.collabs (posts open with "Hi! VanDraw here — and I'm Bella, the person behind…"), which looks like an intake point for creator partnerships. Whether these are paid collaborations can't be confirmed directly, so it's labeled as inferred.
- Facebook page matrix (confirmed). Web search surfaces several new numeric-ID Facebook pages (61594353385908, 61594125347299, 61594325684503, 61595006045905, 61593689985156) posting Reels titled "…with VanDraw App" (Roblox avatars, black silhouettes, Attack on Titan fan content). The page IDs are close together, which looks like a batch of accounts opened at the same time. There is also a Facebook @Vandraw66.
- Synced distribution on Instagram / YouTube Shorts (confirmed). @vandrawapp on Instagram, YouTube @VanDrawApp (97 subscribers, 15 Shorts). The content is the same as on TikTok ("POV: you can finally draw").
- Spoken name → brand search (inferred, with evidence). The official FAQ specifically says "Is it VanDraw or OneDraw? Some people type OneDraw when they look it up." Users are searching for the name they heard in the videos, which suggests traffic comes from spoken narration and captions rather than store keywords. The app is called "VanDraw" and doesn't stuff "AR Drawing / Trace" keywords into its name. That is rare in a category that lives on ASO, and it suggests the app doesn't depend on store search.
- Riding trends: paper squishies (confirmed). 1.0.9 (11-01) launched "Paper Squishies": trace, color, cut, stuff, squish. A daily "surprise bag" collects the series. On TikTok it has already formed the #vandrawsquishy tag, and someone has posted an Indonesian squishy tutorial labeled "inspired by VanDraw". The Halloween course (1.0.9 update notes) follows the same holiday-trend playbook.
- Paid ads: none found in the libraries. Neither the metaads nor the tiktokads library has any ad landing on com.vandraw / 6803028658 / vandraw.com. But those libraries only track products on their lists, and TikTok ads only cover Europe, so not found ≠ not running. Play's ~100k installs in the last 7 days and the distribution across iOS storefronts in Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Eastern Europe could also reflect paid acquisition. Unverified.
- Media / X / Reddit: none. x-radar returned 0 posts in the last 60 days. Exa and Brave only surface download sites (CNET, APKPure, Softonic, AppBrain) and app analytics pages. There is no press coverage, no Reddit discussion, and no founder posting revenue.
5. Why it took off
- The demand itself is a proven market: AR tracing has tens of millions of installs at the top of Play, so a new entrant that gets distribution can capture volume. VanDraw doesn't need to educate the market.
- Distribution took a different route: competitors mostly rely on keyword titles, store search and paid acquisition. VanDraw uses "a drawing account + clickable series content" to create sustained exposure on TikTok. Each video is itself a product demo (phone propped on paper, tracing lines, finished piece), and "who's next?" prompts comments that pick the next piece. That lets one account post dozens of times a day. The topics are all youth-traffic themes (Roblox avatars, black silhouette memes, BL comics, horror movie characters, squishies), which matches the app's 12+/13+ age rating.
- Reasons to stay and pay: voice-guided step-by-step courses, category galleries (anime, characters), photo-to-line-art conversion, and a daily surprise bag give people who "can't draw" and kids a reason to come back every day. The subscription plus lifetime one-time-purchase pricing matches the category. iOS 4.7 / Play 4.58 ratings suggest the experience is decent. App Store reviews mention a "free subscription problem" and some complaints about the paywall (not examined closely).
- Timing: 9–October back-to-school season plus Halloween drawing-content peak, with 2026 fall paper-squish trend riding on top.
6. Differentiation
The product features are nearly identical to dozens of AR tracing apps. The real differences are two things:
- Branding + content-driven distribution: a brand name that's easy to say, plus a fixed-format UGC content matrix, rather than a keyword-stuffed front;
- Packaging tracing as a youth activity: voice courses, anime characters, Roblox, paper squishies (made into physical toys), a daily surprise bag. Compared with competitors that position themselves as "tools," it reads more like an entertainment app.
Point 1 is the main reason it took off. Point 2 is why the content keeps producing new themes. Product differences alone don't explain the growth.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. There is no media, X or Reddit discussion and no public revenue. It exists only as tags within the TikTok drawing community.
- Copycats: none found that specifically copy VanDraw. But many AR drawing apps were already flooding Play at the same time, and the paper-squishy angle already has holiday and play-style apps like Draw Music and Halloween Sketch.
8. Takeaways
- In an ASO red-ocean category, don't pile on keywords. Instead, compete on content with "brand name + TikTok drawing-account matrix." Choose a clickable series format (who's next / replying to @), post daily from one account, and let comments become the topic list.
- Follow youth-platform trends (Roblox, memes, BL, horror IP, squishies), and ship matching gallery or course content in the app at the same time, so content and product update together.
- Turn a screen tool into physical output (paper drawings, paper squishies). That makes it easy to film and gives parents a reason to see it as something other than screen time.
- Android first, plus Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian, to capture cheap traffic in Latin America and Southeast Asia.
9. Uncertain
- Whether creators are paid partners, self-built small accounts, or organic users: the highly consistent format points to the first two, but no partnership quote or recruitment post has been found (@vandraw.collabs requires login to view).
- Whether it's buying traffic: the ad libraries finding nothing doesn't mean it isn't.
- Revenue: iOS hasn't reached the top grossing charts in the main storefronts, and Play has no revenue data. The real paying rate is unknown.
- Whether VanDraw explicitly appears in the high-view videos (memcanva 290k, jenny_sketchbook 177k, kabobocchi 230k): this is judged only from search hits. I did not watch the videos one by one.
- Team behind it: VanDraw Limited, Hong Kong. Whether it's a new brand from a tool-app factory is unverified.
