Bundling free YouTube teacher courses into one app: StudyZone, an exam-prep directory for Egyptian high school students
What it is An Egyptian high school exam-prep app. It embeds free YouTube lessons from 3,000 teachers, organized by textbook. It makes money only from its question bank, past-paper explanations and AI tutor, and the question bank and AI are subscription-based.
Why it took off The pitch "every high school teacher's free lessons in one app" is something students can repeat word for word. For back-to-school season, it paid 10k+ follower high school TikTok creators to promote it and posted in Facebook class-year groups, with single videos reaching hundreds of thousands of views.
BHow you could copy it: Go to another country where top teachers post lots of lessons on YouTube and students are used to paying for tutoring (North African Bac, Iraq, Jordan, Pakistan, etc.). Build an aggregation layer that organizes the lessons by curriculum, sell only the practice questions and past-paper explanations yourself, price subscriptions by local purchasing power per term, and recruit student influencers to promote it.

Egyptian high school students already listen to top teachers' lessons for free on YouTube. StudyZone organizes these lessons by textbook, unit, and lesson number, embeds the playback, and adds a question bank, past-paper explanations, and an Arabic-language AI tutor. The question bank and AI cost 99 EGP a month (about 2 USD). The Android version has been installed 310k times. The iOS version only launched in late August, and during back-to-school season it squeezed into the free education chart in Egypt. The content belongs to others; StudyZone only handles the catalog, the questions, and the checkout.
A video that says "don't tell anyone"
In 2026 Oct 27, the Egyptian TikTok account @mohamed_hesham0066 posted a video captioned: "If you don't know about Study Zone yet, it's best to keep it that way... this year's admission cutoffs are already tight enough." The account has only 13k followers, and its usual content is high schoolers complaining that "the teacher's lesson nine just dropped and I haven't finished it yet." The bio says "DM for brand collaborations." As of 11-06, the video had 194k views and 188 comments.
The most-liked comment was "what is this thing, bro" (40 likes). Below it came a string of practical questions: "The app is called StudyZone?" "Please post the icon, I didn't know which one to download." "Is it free or do you have to pay?" "Do you still need to go to a tutoring center if you use it, or is this enough?" Some went the other way: "Please stop promoting this app." "The whole world already knows about it."
By early November, a different voice appeared in the comments: "Heads up, it costs money, it's not free" (11-05). "You have to subscribe. The good part is the exams; the explanations are already on YouTube" (11-02). That last line is pretty much the entire business model of this product.
This account pushed several posts in October: 10-10 one saying "everything you want is in the app" got 430k views, 10-23 another got 220k, and 11-03 and 11-05 are still going out.
What it is
Egypt's high school graduation exam (Thanaweya Amma) decides which university you can attend. Several hundred thousand students take it nationwide, and tutoring is the norm. Top teachers post lots of lessons free on YouTube, but students' problem is that the lessons are scattered: it's hard to find which lesson matches the material, and there's no practice after watching.
StudyZone fills that middle layer. Its website's security policy only allows embedding from youtube.com, and several iOS update notes mention fixing the "YouTube player," which shows the videos are embedded YouTube. What it adds itself: a catalog organized by curriculum, questions inserted mid-video, a question bank, past exam and mock exam explanations, PDF summaries, and an AI tutor called "زكي" (Zaki, Arabic for "smart"). Around that core are features designed to get people opening it every day: study groups, voice study rooms, streaks, leaderboards, coins, and even a section with morning and evening prayer reminders.
The official site claims 260k students, 3,000 teachers, 300k videos, and 1.5M questions. The last claim, "all the top exam teachers are included for free," is the exact wording used when it was promoted in Facebook exam groups.
How big it is
| Metric | Sources | |
|---|---|---|
| Android cumulative installs | 313,587,5 days +34,790, about 7,000 per day | Google Play,11-03 |
| Android ratings | 4,609 items, 4.73 points; contains ads and in-app purchases | Google Play,11-03 |
| Android first | 2025-10-05, under a developer account of an outsourcing company in Mansoura | Google Play |
| iOS launch | 2026-08-28, developer listed under a personal name | App Store |
| iOS ratings | 10-28 44 → 11-06 72 reviews, +7 over the last 25 days | App Store |
| iOS charts | Egypt education free chart #10-28, #6,11-06, #12 | App Store |
Don't read too much into the iOS charts: on one day, its #13 spot on the Egypt education free chart had only 5 ratings. Egypt is mostly Android, and based on review counts, iOS users are only about 1–2% of the Android base. The main volume is on Android, with several thousand new installs a day.
Revenue is not public. It hasn't shown up on the Android top grossing chart, and on iOS it's not in the top 25 of the Egypt education top grossing chart.
Where users come from
Recruit student influencers, not teachers. The account promoting it is an ordinary high schooler with 10k+ followers, and the content is "I'm using this," mixed in with a stream of daily complaints like "the teacher updated again" and "the cutoff is going up." Accounts like this pull a lot of traffic under the #ثانوية_عامة (high school exam) hashtag, with individual posts getting hundreds of thousands of views, and the implied cost is very low. During the final sprint season (4–May), an official account also rode the hashtag of a student blogger with 94k followers.
Batch posts in Facebook cohort groups. Egyptian exam students form groups by graduating year ("Class 27," "Elite 2027"). A June 7 post read: "Past mock exams and real exams with explanations are there, plus summaries of every YouTube teacher's notes." Another group: "We put all the top exam teachers into StudyZone for free."
One web page per video. The web version works directly, each lesson has its own page titled "[Lesson name] explanation, high school exam," and searching a lesson name finds it.
Possibly running paid ads (unverified). The website keeps click-tracking parameters from Google, Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat, which suggests it is running or preparing to run ads. The scale can't be determined.
Back-to-school season. Egypt's new school year starts from late September to October, and the 2027 cohort (including the new "البكالوريا" system) has just enrolled. The Android version shipped more than a dozen updates in a month, and iOS climbed to #6 on the chart in late October, all in the weeks after school started.
Its own accounts are small: the official TikTok has 4,181 followers and 4 videos; the Facebook page has 1.8K followers.
How it makes money
| Tier | Pricing (Egypt iOS) |
|---|---|
| Free | Watch lessons |
| "الدحيح" | 99 EGP/month, 250 EGP/4 months |
| "التميز" | From 199 EGP/month, 399 EGP/4 months, 799 EGP/year |
The paid tier sits on things YouTube doesn't have: past exams, mock tests, question banks, and AI-explained answers. 99 EGP is cheaper than a single tutoring lesson. The option that charges once for 4 months matches one school term.
Students themselves can't say exactly where the free part ends. Some say "the explanations are on YouTube, the exams are what you pay for"; others say "watching the videos, taking notes, and doing exams all cost money." The likely setup: the lessons are free, while some materials and exams sit behind a paywall, and people who download it may not be able to tell the difference.
In the October 30 update, it added Saudi aptitude and achievement tests (القدرات، التحصيلي) and the new Saudi curriculum. Saudi device registrations default to Saudi, and the /sa page on the website lists an annual fee of 199.99 riyals (launch price). The same playbook is already being moved to a second country.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | What it is | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube teacher channels | The default study channel for Egyptian high schoolers | StudyZone embeds these videos, adding a catalog, questions, and AI on top |
| Individual teachers' apps ("منصة مستر X") | Dozens of apps published in bulk by outsourcing shops, each with 0–10 ratings | One app per teacher, sold by access code; StudyZone covers all subjects and teachers |
| Nagwa Classes | Egypt iOS: 899 ratings, #3 on the education top grossing chart (11-06) | Own teachers, paid live small-group classes, an order of magnitude more expensive |
| منصة الأضواء(Nahdet Misr) | Publisher's supplementary-material platform, 1,004 ratings on iOS | Only in-house content |
| Noon / Abwaab / Baims | A funded large platform from the Gulf | In-house content, focused on Saudi Arabia; Abwaab launched a Saudi exam app in September, which directly overlaps with StudyZone |
| Zatoona AI | An Egyptian pure-AI photo-question tutor, 2 free questions per day | No videos or question banks |
| ChatGPT / Gemini | General AI | Doesn't use Egyptian textbooks |
Many products target the Egyptian high school exam, but they are either a single teacher's paid app or large platforms with in-house content. I haven't found a second one at this scale that gathers the free lessons of top YouTube teachers nationwide into one place, organizes them by textbook, and layers on question banks and AI. There is no media coverage, no funding news, and nothing to find on X. The only people who know about it are Egyptian high schoolers.
The risk sits in the same place: the copyright on the content and YouTube's embedding rules are not in its hands. Teachers may object, YouTube may tighten its rules, and Apple may also review apps that "aggregate YouTube" more strictly. The iOS version came out nearly a year after the Android version, and the reason is unverified.
If it were you
B. The playbook is clear and few people know about it, and it can be moved to other countries. But the content is borrowed, the revenue has never surfaced, and at 2 USD a month, the price needs very large volume to hold up.
Who it suits: developers who understand a country's high school or secondary exams and can work in the local language. The condition is that top teachers there post many free lessons on YouTube, and students are used to paying for tutoring. Worth looking at first: the Bac in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia; the high school exams in Iraq and Jordan (Jordan already has several pure-AI small products); the secondary exams in Pakistan and Bangladesh; and Indonesia's university entrance exam. Search YouTube for local "[subject] lesson [number] explanation" and you'll find a pile of teacher channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers, which is what this kind of market looks like.
Who it doesn't suit: those who want to enter markets like India, the US, or China, where large platforms already exist; those who only want to build AI and won't put in the effort to catalog lessons one by one; and those who are wary of copyright and platform policy risk.
How to build it: start with just one grade level and two or three major subjects. Organize the local teachers' YouTube lessons by textbook chapter, attach 5–10 questions after each lesson, and add explanations of past exams. This is the paid part, and it is the only content you have to produce yourself. Attach the AI tutor to specific lessons and questions rather than building a general chatbot. Price it at less than half the cost of one local tutoring lesson, and offer a separate one-time term plan with no auto-renewal. Get the web version running first, with a searchable page for each lesson, then launch on Android; iOS can come later. Ideally, reach out to a few teachers beforehand and offer them traffic or revenue sharing, so that "borrowing content" becomes "partnering."
How to acquire users: pay TikTok accounts of high schoolers with 1–20k followers to promote it, rather than paying teachers. The content should be "I'm using this," blended into their daily complaints; the "don't tell anyone" angle works well. Post in cohort-specific groups on Facebook and Telegram with one clear line: "All the teachers' lessons are here, free."
Deadline: follow the back-to-school and exam seasons. Most of North Africa and the Middle East starts school around 9–October and holds exams 5–June. Ideally, go live before the 2027 March sprint season so you can catch one round of sprint traffic. If you miss it, wait for the 2027 September school start.
Signs you got it wrong: ① YouTube tightens embedding, or an Egyptian teacher publicly demands StudyZone take down their lessons: the borrowed-content route is no longer stable. ② StudyZone shows up on the Android top grossing chart, or gets media coverage of a funding round: that means the money is real, but competitors will flood in quickly. ③ A year in, its daily Android installs drop below a thousand or so and it never reaches the top grossing chart: that means the 2 USD subscription isn't holding up, and students only treat it as a free catalog. ④ You find an app in your target country already offering "all teachers free + question bank," with student influencers promoting it: that spot is taken, so pick a different country.

One line
StudyZone is a study app for Egyptian high school graduation exam students (Thanaweya Amma, ثانوية عامة). It organizes lessons from top Egyptian teachers, already free on YouTube, by textbook, unit and lesson, plays them inline, adds quiz questions, question banks and PDFs inside the videos, and includes an Arabic AI tutor called زكي (Zaki). The lessons are all free. The question bank, mock exams and extra AI usage are subscriptions at 99 EGP a month (about $2). It's not a new iOS product: the Android version launched 2025-10 and had 314k installs by 11-03. The iOS version only launched 2026-08-28, and it got recalled because Egypt is entering the school season, and several paid promoters pushing it to TikTok accounts sent it up the Egypt iOS Education Free chart.

The bar to chart on iOS in Egypt is very low. On the same day (11-06), the #13 app, "فرصة هب", had only 5 ratings, and #21 had just 1. Egypt is mainly Android, and the 72 iOS ratings are only a small slice. The core market is Android (roughly 7,000 installs a day). Going by rating counts, iOS users are probably only 1–2% of the Android base.

Abwaab 2026-09 also charted a Saudi "قياس/قدرات/تحصيلي" app, right as StudyZone expands into Saudi Arabia. |
| Zatoona AI(زتونة AI) | Android / web | Domain 2026-02 registered | Not verified | A pure AI tutor (the tutor is called ذكي/ZAKI 2.5): snap a photo of a question and it explains in Egyptian Arabic, with 2 free questions a day. StudyZone is a combo of video, question bank and AI |
| TawjihiAI and other Jordanian AI study-prep apps | iOS / web | 2025–2026 | Jordan's TawjihiAI and other Jordanian AI exam-prep apps | iOS ratings in the single digits to dozens |
| ChatGPT / Gemini / NotebookLM | Big-company features | — | — | They serve Jordan / Palestine's Tawjihi exam, not Egypt |
Bottom line: there are plenty of Egypt high-school exam prep products, but most are one teacher with a paid app, or big platforms with their own content. We found no second product doing what aggregates free lessons from Egypt's top YouTube teachers does at this scale: one app, organized by curriculum, with a question bank and AI layered on top. The closest predecessor is Nafham (a free lesson-video aggregator) which has been around since 2012, and it no longer shows up on the charts in our iOS library.
III. Growth levers (where users come from)
- Paid promotion by a student TikTok account (confirmed). @mohamed_hesham0066 has 13k followers, with a bio reading "for ads and promotions, DM me". In October he posted several StudyZone promo videos: 10-10 "Everything you wish for is on the app" got 430k views; 10-23 got 220k views; 10-27 "For those who don't know Study Zone yet…" got 190k views; 11-03 and 11-05 are still being posted. An account with only 13k followers pulling hundreds of thousands of views shows that this kind of "student daily life + product seeding" content performs well under #ثانوية_عامة (secondary school exams). In the 4–May exam sprint, the official account also piggybacked on student creator @omarashraf539 (94k followers) with the hashtag #عمر_أشرف. (TikHub)
- Posted in Facebook Thanaweya Amma exam groups (confirmed). In the "Thanwia A'ma Class 27" group, 2026-06-07 a post recommends it: "عليه كل الإسترشادي والإمتحانات… وعليه ملخص لكل مذاكرات مدرسين اليوتيوب" (it has all the past mock exams and real exams with solutions, plus summaries of every YouTube teacher's notes). Another post in the "Elite ثانوية عامة 2027" group says "جمعنالك كل مدرسين الثانوية العامة ببلاش في ابلكيشن study zone" (we gathered all the Thanaweya Amma teachers for you for free in the StudyZone app).
- Confirmed posts in big Facebook high school exam groups. A post in the "Thanwia A'ma Class 4,181" group 4 recommends it: "عليه كل الإسترشادي والإمتحانات… وعليه ملخص لكل مذاكرات مدرسين اليوتيوب" (it has all past mock exams and real exams with explanations, plus summaries of all the YouTube teachers' notes). A post in the "Elite ثانوية عامة 1.8" group says "جمعنالك كل مدرسين الثانوية العامة ببلاش في ابلكيشن study zone" (we've gathered all the high school exam teachers for you for free in the StudyZone app). (Jina search results)
- SEO and web entry (partly confirmed). Each video has its own indexable page (studyzone.app/video/216506 style, titled "شرح … للثانوية العامة"), so searching a course name finds it. The homepage sends Saudi visitors to /sa based on timezone and keeps utm / gclid / fbclid / ttclid / snapclid parameters. This suggests it runs or is preparing ads on Google, Meta, TikTok and Snapchat. Ad volume is unverified; our Meta ad library doesn't track it.
- Timing: back-to-school season plus a new cohort of exam takers (inferred). Egypt's new school year starts late September to October, and the 2027 cohort (including the new "البكالوريا" system) has just enrolled. Android went from 7.1.1 to 7.2.21 with a dozen-plus releases in one month, and iOS hit #6 in the Education free chart after 10-28. All of it lands in the weeks after school starts.
- The App Store itself (inferred). The iOS version only launched in late August, so it's a new channel split off from Android / web users. iOS rating is 4.36, lower than Android's 4.73, and we see no sign of rating manipulation.
4. Why it took off
- The free supply was already there. Egyptian high-school exam teachers post lots of free lessons on YouTube. Students' pain points are that courses are scattered, it's hard to find the right lesson, and there's no practice after watching. StudyZone pays no content costs; it embeds these lessons and builds the catalogue, so its pitch can be "3,000 teachers, 300k videos, all free." That line is the best ad on its own.
- Lessons are free, and it charges for the question bank and AI, at a low price. Egyptian families routinely spend on private tutors and tutoring centres. 99 EGP/month (about $2) is cheaper than a single tutoring session. Past-exam and mock-exam solutions and AI explanations are exactly what YouTube doesn't offer.
- Seeding through student TikTok accounts, not teachers. The promotion runs on student accounts with the message "I'm using this." It targets 15–18 year olds and is very cheap.
- Fast iteration, with lots of features stacked on. Embedded video quizzes, an AI tutor, study groups and voice study rooms, daily streaks, leaderboards, coins, and even a morning and evening prayer (أذكار) section (per the iOS 6.7.5 release notes). All of it is aimed at the goal of "open it every day."
- Already copying it into Saudi Arabia. The 10-30 release brings Saudi القدرات, التحصيلي and 1448 curricula (مسارات) to Saudi, and new registrations on Saudi devices default to Saudi. This shows the "aggregation + question bank + AI" playbook is seen internally as a template that can move to other countries.
5. Differentiation
Its differentiation is "other people's free lessons plus its own questions and AI." Compared with paid platforms built around one teacher, it covers every subject and teacher, and the lessons are free. Compared with platforms that own their content, like Nagwa or Noon, it has almost no content cost and charges an order of magnitude less. Compared with pure AI tutors (Zatoona AI, ChatGPT), it has video and a full question bank underneath. This differentiation is why it took off: "all the teachers in one app, and it's free" is a line students can repeat directly, and both the seeding content and the FB group posts say exactly that. Its risk sits in the same place: the copyright of the content and YouTube's terms of use aren't in its hands. Teachers may object, YouTube could tighten its embedding policy, and Apple could review the act of "aggregating YouTube" (the iOS version came nearly a year after Android; the reason is unverified).
6. Visibility and copycats
- Few people know about it yet. No media coverage, no funding news, no public revenue. It doesn't show up in our X corpus (x-radar: 90 posts in the last 0 days). The developer appears as "Mostafa Ali" on iOS, and on Android the app sits under the account of an outsourcing firm in Mansoura (7aduta, Mohamed Saleh Ibrahim Amin). It circulates only in Egyptian high-schoolers' TikTok and FB groups.
- Copycats: We haven't seen anyone clearly copying it. Similar products over the same period include Zatoona AI (2026-02, an Egyptian AI tutor whose assistant is also called "ذكي") and Jordan's TawjihiAI, but they are all pure-AI approaches. Also, "زكي/ذكي" (a near-homophone of "clever") is a common Arabic name, so it can't be used to judge who copied whom.
VII. What to take away
- In exam markets where free teacher content is abundant but scattered across YouTube (India, Indonesia, Vietnam, North Africa, the Gulf countries' national exams), build an aggregation layer organised by curriculum, and do only the question bank, past-exam solutions and AI yourself.
- Be generous with the free tier (every lesson free), put the paywall on what causes the most exam anxiety (past papers, mock exams, explanations of wrong answers), price to local purchasing power (about $2 a month), and add a tier paid once per semester with no auto-renewal.
- For promotion, find students themselves with around 10k followers, not teachers, and make the content "I'm using it." Also post in cohort groups on FB (like "Class 27").
- Once you have a template, copy it straight to the next country by curriculum and exam (here, Egypt → Saudi Arabia).
VIII. Unknowns
- Paid conversion and revenue: we didn't capture it on the Play grossing chart, and on iOS it isn't in the top 25 of the Egypt grossing chart.
- Whether it is buying heavily on Meta, TikTok and Snap: the site keeps click-ID parameters for those platforms, but our ad library doesn't track it.
- Content licensing: we couldn't find whether it has any agreement with YouTube teachers (the site only says "من نخبة المدرسين", "from elite teachers").
- Team and funding: the relationship between "Mostafa Ali" and 7aduta is unverified. The "Exam Zone" sub-brand and the "منصة مناهج" (Manahej) institution listing mentioned in the recall card could not be independently verified this time.
- The Android launch date 2025-10-05 may have been reset by a listing change. There is an old FB promotion post from 2025 years ago under the old package name com.study.zone.edu, so the early history may go back further; the studyzone.app domain has archived records from 2022 years ago, but whether it was the same team at the time is unverified.
