A ski app hit the Top Grossing chart in Mauritius: Berk's shell, and what it sells inside
What it is On the surface it's an iPhone ski GPS logging and community app. In practice it sells one-on-one chat and voice calls with strangers, charged in coins, rated 18+, run by an Indonesian company.
Why it took off It rode a ski-tool shell through review, picked the low-bar lifestyle category, and after a new version charted in 100 countries at once. 30 more than a dozen countries saw ratings jump the same day. Small-country category charts need only a few dozen downloads to reach the top, which buys free exposure. Then a few users paying large amounts for chat make the money.
DHow you could follow Don't copy the hidden-feature trick. What's worth learning: ship your real app in multiple languages once, go after the top spots in low-bar lifestyle categories in small countries, then check the Top Grossing charts to find the countries where people actually pay, and concentrate your paid acquisition there.

On the App Store Berk is listed as "Ski Tracker & Community", pitched as GPS ski logging, 3D route replay, and an AI coach. But in Nov 6 its strongest placements were in Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Egypt, none of which have ski resorts, and on the Top Grossing chart. Users are paying for coins inside the app, and spending them on private chats and voice calls with strangers. Below we break down what it actually is, how it climbed the charts in 101 countries, and why we don't recommend following it.
Two US users, two different apps
In Oct 8, a US user named Garret (with a skiing emoji in his name) gave Berk one star under the title "AI generated app", with one line of text: "Nobody who actually skis, just a few empty accounts."
Three weeks later, in Oct 30, another US user gave one star for a different reason: "Doesn't work, nobody to meet. Totally different from the app on my friend's phone."
One person went in looking for people to ski with, the other went in looking for "people to meet", and the Berk on his friend's phone looked different. Put these two reviews together and they pretty much explain Berk: the same app shows different things to different people. An Oct 27 five-star review put it most bluntly: "Great app, you can meet new friends." Nobody mentioned skiing.
What it is
On the store page, Berk is a ski and snowboard logging tool plus community: real-time speed, vertical drop, turn count, 3D route replay, following other skiers, powder-day posts, and an AI coach. Released Aug 28, category Lifestyle.
Look closer and the details don't add up:
- Age rating 18+, flagged for "messaging and chat, user-generated content, social media". A ski-logging tool rarely needs that rating.
- The only in-app purchase is coins, in 9 tiers, from $0.99 to $99.99, with no subscription. Real ski-logging products like Slopes make their money on annual subscriptions.
- The website is berk.love. Its terms of service cover private messages, voice calls between users, virtual currency, adults-only use, and reporting for child sexual exploitation. The terms describe coins as "fees for asking questions of the AI ski coach".
- The seller is an Indonesian company, PT SANDI DAYA GUNA, and the developer display name is "Berk SANDI".
The same Indonesian company has another app on Google Play called Sube: Faces Across Borders. We didn't install it. Its store description opens with "face-to-face one-on-one video chat", "virtual gifts", and "ages 18+ only". In Oct 29 a Sube user wrote: "Picked up the call and they're just sitting there looking at you." The company replied with an apology. Sube had 29k installs in Oct 103 and 6k in Nov 202, more than doubling in about a week (Google Play installs).
So Berk is most likely the iPhone version of Sube's business: one-on-one chat and calls with strangers, charged in coins, wrapped in a skiing skin to get through Apple's review (an inference; we haven't seen the "other side" of the app in screenshots). In the global-expansion circles this is called a "sock-puppet package": a legitimate-looking tool gets submitted for review, and after approval, depending on region, device or channel, it switches to the features it actually sells.
How it took off
In Oct 22 Berk shipped version 1.1.0, with release notes that read "bug fixes and improvements". Then it started charting. By Oct 28 it was on the charts in 77 countries, with only 24 ratings worldwide.
Then came Oct 30. That day the US, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Malaysia and more than a dozen other countries began gaining ratings on the same day. Daily new ratings by store (App Store, 10-30 to 11-06):
| Date | Cumulative ratings | Added that day | Countries charted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 24 | 0 | 80 |
| 10-30 | 163 | 139 | 88 |
| 10-31 | 257 | 94 | 89 |
| 11-01 | 312 | 55 | 89 |
| 11-02 | 343 | 30 | 88 |
| 11-03 | 362 | 19 | 90 |
| 11-04 | 374 | 12 | 89 |
| 11-05 | 382 | 8 | 100 |
| 11-06 | 402 | 20 | 101 |
More than a dozen countries took off on the same day, then roughly halved each day after. Organic growth doesn't look like this. It looks more like a coordinated batch of "good review" tasks (an inference). The US five-star reviews are also clustered between October 27 and 29, with lines like "Fire", "Good app" and "this is a really good app".
What really drove exposure was the charts. It picked the Lifestyle category and spread across small countries. In Nov 6 its best positions by country were:
| Country | Position | Ratings in this country |
|---|---|---|
| Mauritius | Lifestyle Top Grossing #2, overall Top Grossing #78 | 0 |
| Sri Lanka | Lifestyle Top Grossing #3, overall Top Grossing #74 | 1 |
| Nepal | Lifestyle Top Free #5, overall Top Grossing #73 | 1 |
| Pakistan | Lifestyle Top Free #3, overall Top Grossing #115 | 23 |
| Egypt | Lifestyle Top Free #6, overall Top Grossing #140 | 48 |
| Turkey | Lifestyle Top Grossing #9, overall Top Grossing #179 | 24 |
| US | Lifestyle Top Grossing #67 | About 60 |
Mauritius Lifestyle Top Grossing #2, with zero ratings. Small-country category charts have a very low bar: a few dozen downloads and a few purchases can put you near the top. Of the 101 countries where it charted, 50 were on the Top Grossing chart, which means people really are buying coins. The third-party data site AppGazers estimates its October revenue between $21k and $172k, with 44k to 200k downloads (model estimates, very wide range).
There are signs of paid acquisition too. The privacy label declares "identifiers used to track you", which usually means an ad attribution tool is integrated, and the charting started before the ratings spike. But we found no Berk or Sube ads in the public Meta or TikTok ad libraries. They may be running Google or Apple search ads, or spending in regions that aren't indexed (unverified). Nobody is discussing it on TikTok, X, or in the news.
Where the money comes from
The money comes from a small number of people who pay a lot to chat. In one-on-one paid chat, revenue depends on a few users repeatedly topping up, with the highest tier at $99.99, which is why it charts on Top Grossing more broadly than Top Free.
Beyond Apple in-app purchase there's an offline route too. In Oct 29 a Turkish user gave one star: "I bought tokens by bank transfer (EFT), they never added them... and they wanted my national ID number and date of birth. Don't trust them, don't fill it in." Voice and video chat products in the Middle East and Turkey often use this kind of channel, buying from "coin dealers" or agents. The review also shows it's already crossing compliance lines.
Who it's competing with
Its real competitors aren't ski apps. Slopes, Ski Tracks and Strava users are on the slopes in North America, Europe and Japan. Berk is pushing into Egypt and Pakistan, and the two never meet.
What it sells is the same as Chamet, Tumile, MICO, LivU and Azar, products that openly do dating and video chat. The only difference is the shell. Those products often get stuck in iOS review or throttled. Berk gets its listing by using an obscure hobby that a reviewer has no reason to doubt.
The more useful thing to look at is its siblings. Since June this year, at least 18 more "hobby community" apps have launched on the App Store, rated 8+, Lifestyle, and reached Top Grossing in dozens of countries:
| App | Shell | Seller | Launched | 11-06 countries charted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceno | Stargazing | PT UTAMA BINA JAKA (Indonesia) | 08-19 | 87 |
| Candra | Hobby skills | PT SAGE LINK TECH (Indonesia) | 08-30 | 58 |
| Ekko | Crafts | PT KODE TEKNO PRATA (Indonesia) | 06-16 | 82 |
| Olen | Rowing | PT PLATFORM USAHA PINTAR (Indonesia) | 09-30 | 91 |
| Nook | Hiking | LOGICORE TECHNOLOGY LTD | 07-14 | 54 |
| Bello | Nightlife | BOLTRIX TECHNOLOGY LTD | 09-04 | 44 |
| Lento | Bracelet DIY | HELIX INNOVATIONS TECHNOLOGY LTD | 07-13 | 81 |
| Renna | Live streaming | CELESTIA TECHNOLOGY LTD | 08-27 | 86 |
Ceno, a stargazing app, has added ratings daily from Oct 30 at 118, 82, 74, 37, 29 and 17. Berk went 139, 94, 55, 30, 19 and 12. The same starting day and the same halving rhythm suggests the same operator, or the same review-buying service (inference). Olen, a rowing app, started in Nov 3, and Renna, a live-streaming app, started in Nov 4, running the same process. Berk isn't a standalone product. It's one account in a matrix of accounts.
If it were you
Verdict: we don't recommend following it. It got where it is not because of the product but because it hid paid stranger chat inside a ski-tool shell to get through review. Copying that means building hidden features on the App Store, which violates review guideline 2.3.1. If discovered, the app gets pulled, the developer account gets banned, and other apps under the same entity can be dragged down too. And the playbook is already being run by an operation at scale, rotating the shell from skiing to stargazing, handicrafts and rowing.
Who it fits: overseas social companies already running one-on-one video chat, with hosts or guild supply on the other end and overseas payment and customer support teams. For them this is competitive intelligence, not a new opportunity.
Who it doesn't fit: indie devs and small teams. You don't have the people on the other end of the chat (that's where the real value of this business sits), and you can't absorb the cost of getting banned, then rebuilding accounts and entities.
How to do it: the part worth learning is the clean half. If you have a legitimate tool or community app, pick a low-bar category (like Lifestyle), ship in multiple languages once, and go after the top spots on small-country category charts. These charts can put you in the top ten with a few dozen downloads, buying free exposure as a "charted in 100 countries". Then check which countries actually pay, and concentrate your spend there.
How to acquire users: its mix is small-country category charts plus concentrated review prompting, and possibly paid acquisition. We don't recommend copying the review part. Mass-charting in small-country categories and using Top Grossing to find paying countries can be applied directly to your own product.
When to move: there's no window for the sock-puppet package route. Each round of Apple cleanup can make the whole matrix disappear. The small-country category tactic isn't time-sensitive and won't expire.
What would mean we got this wrong: ① If in three months Berk, Ceno and Olen are all still listed and Top Grossing charts still cover dozens of countries, Apple is enforcing this category more loosely than we assumed, and the matrix model lasts longer than it looks. ② If someone openly runs dating or chat (without hiding features) and similarly fills Top Grossing across dozens of countries on iOS, then demand is clearly big enough that the shell isn't the key, and the category deserves a fresh look. ③ Conversely, if these "hobby community" apps are pulled in batches within one or two months, that confirms the route doesn't go far.

Berk sells the same thing, just evading through a disguised category. Slopes / Ski Tracks / Strava iOS 2010 era Top of the genuine ski-logging segment (specific figures not verified) Real skiing, with users in North America, Europe and Japan. Berk is pushing into Egypt, Pakistan and Mauritius, none of which have snow, so they don't compete. - Where users come from
- Inferred Synchronized multi-store ratings / incentivized reviews: 10-30 In the US, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and a dozen-plus other stores, ratings started climbing on the same day and then halved each day. US reviews cluster between 10-27 and 10-29 and are empty ones like "Fire" and "Good app". Ceno's curve moves in sync with it.
- Confirmed Small-country × Lifestyle category chart push: 11-06 charted in 101 stores' Lifestyle charts. Top Grossing #2 in Lifestyle in Mauritius, #3 in Sri Lanka, Top Free #3 in Pakistan, Top Grossing #67 in the US (appstore database).
- Inferred Paid acquisition: The privacy label declares identifiers used for tracking. When the 10-28 database started recording, it had only 24 ratings yet was already charting in 77 stores. The same seller's Sube gained +7k installs on Google Play in 99 days. Neither the Meta ad library nor the TikTok EU ad library shows any ads.
- Inferred Offline coin dealers / bank-transfer top-ups: 1-star Turkish review: paid for tokens by EFT transfer, tokens never arrived, and they demanded an ID number and date of birth.
- Confirmed Organic content / media / social: Jina, TikHub and x-radar all return nothing relevant.
Why Berk: Ski Tracker & Community (iOS id6803754196) showed up in the results
In one line: on the surface it's a ski-logging and community app, but it's really the iOS wrapper for PT SANDI DAYA GUNA's (Indonesia) pay-to-chat business: voice/video calls plus virtual currency for 1 1 users. It got through review disguised as a ski tool, and after 10-22 sent 1.1.0,10-30 100 ratings in several countries on the same day, it climbed the Lifestyle free and grossing charts. It didn't get there on the product. It's a playbook of "disguised category + virtual currency + multi-country chart gaming." At the same time, the library has at least 8 other "hobby community" wrapper apps running the same model.

Evidence of the real category
- US review from 6 days ago, 1-star (Ggs12Zak): "App doesn't work, no people to meet. App is completely different then my friends app". The user came to meet people, and his friend's Berk looks different from his. This matches the usual disguise-app setup: the backend switches to the real features (the B-side) by region, device or channel.
- US review from 10-27, 5-star (Pocco24$): "Awesome app get to meet new people". There are also empty reviews like "Fire" and "this is a really good app", clustered between 10-27 and 10-29.
- Turkish review from 10-29, 1-star: "Eft havale yaptım tokensleri yüklemediler… kimlik bilgilerinizi illa istiyorlar tc doğum tarihi". Meaning: the user paid by bank transfer (EFT) for tokens, the tokens never arrived, and they insisted on an ID number and date of birth. This suggests an offline coin-dealer / agent top-up channel alongside Apple in-app purchase, which is common for voice and video chat products in the Middle East and Turkey (appstore database, review table).
- The same seller's app on Google Play is Sube: Faces Across Borders (sube.photography.and). Its store description literally says "1-on-1 video chat… virtual gifts… adults 18+". Installs went from 2026-10-29 to 103,299,2026-11-06 to 202,158, up 98,859 in 7 days. 11-06 charted in Social free charts in 23 stores including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey and Brazil (best rank #39 in Indonesia), and in Indonesia's Social Top Grossing at #95 (googleplay database app_day / chart_rank). So Berk is probably the iOS version of Sube's business wearing a ski skin. This inference is not confirmed by any screenshot of the client's B-side.
2. Data: how it "got going"
appstore database, all stores combined:
| Date | Cumulative ratings | Added that day | Stores charted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 24 | – | 77 |
| 10-29 | 24 | 0 | 80 |
| 10-30 | 163 | 139 | 88 |
| 10-31 | 257 | 94 | 89 |
| 11-01 | 312 | 55 | 89 |
| 11-02 | 343 | 30 | 88 |
| 11-03 | 362 | 19 | 90 |
| 11-04 | 374 | 12 | 89 |
| 11-05 | 382 | 8 | 100 |
| 11-06 | 402 | 20 | 101 |
- By the time the database started recording (10-28), it was already charting in 77 stores, with only 24 ratings worldwide. So the charting came before the rating surge: after the 1.1.0 release (10-22), chart positions were pushed up with downloads (inferred: paid acquisition, or Sube's existing users and channels feeding in).
- On 10-30, the US, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Malaysia and a dozen-plus other stores all started gaining ratings at once: US +22, Egypt +24, Turkey +10, Saudi Arabia +5. Then it halved every day (139→94→55→30→19→12→8). A curve where many stores start on the same day and then decay exponentially fits a coordinated incentivized-review / rating-farm job, not organic growth.
- 11-06 best positions by store (appstore database app_profile): Mauritius Lifestyle Top Grossing #2, overall Top Grossing #78; Sri Lanka Lifestyle Top Grossing #3, overall Top Grossing #74; Nepal overall Top Grossing #73; Pakistan Lifestyle Top Free #3, overall Top Grossing #115; Egypt Lifestyle Top Free #6, overall Top Free #141, overall Top Grossing #140; Turkey Lifestyle Top Grossing #9, overall Top Grossing #179; US Lifestyle Top Grossing #67; Spain Lifestyle Top Grossing #23; Romania Lifestyle Top Grossing #15. Of the 101 stores where it charted, 50 were Top Grossing category charts. Spreading this widely across grossing charts suggests real coin purchases.
- AppGazers estimate: October revenue $21.1K–$172.1K, downloads 44.4k–202k (80% interval, model estimate).
3. Competitors
A. The surface category (ski logging): Slopes (iOS / Android, about 2015 years old, the leading subscription ski-logging product), Ski Tracks (Core Coders, 2010s, long-running paid tool), Strava (large sports-tracking platform, supports skiing), Carv (hardware-plus-app AI coach). These are real ski products with users in North America, Europe and Japan during the snow season. Berk is charting in Egypt, Pakistan, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, countries with no ski resorts, and before the November season starts, so it isn't competing with these for users at all. "Skiing" is just the skin for review. (The scale and launch dates of these apps are general knowledge descriptions, not checked one by one.)
B. The real category (1-to-1 paid voice / video chat, virtual-coin tipping): Chamet, Tumile, MICO, LivU, Azar (Hyperconnect, 2014), the Middle Eastern Yalla voice rooms and similar. These are big openly-marketed "dating / video chat" products, and on iOS they're often throttled or delisted for 4.3 / 1.2 policy issues (UGC plus video with strangers). Berk differs from them only in the wrapper: it trades on a niche hobby category unrelated to social features to get listed and into a low-bar Lifestyle chart.
C. Disguise apps running the same playbook (its peers, and copycats): "Hobby community" apps in appstore database launched after 2026-06, 17+, Lifestyle, and charted in Top Grossing category charts in 20+ stores:
| App | Seller | Launched | 11-06 stores charted | All-store ratings / 7 daily new |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ceno: Stargazing Community | PT UTAMA BINA JAKA (Indonesia) | 08-19 | 87 | 408 / 268 |
| Candra - Hobby & Skill Social | PT SAGE LINK TECH (Indonesia), description mentions call | 08-30 | 58 | 547 / 37 |
| Ekko: Handmade Creator Hub | PT KODE TEKNO PRATA (Indonesia), description mentions coin | 06-16 | 82 | 317 / 70 |
| Olen-Paddling | PT PLATFORM USAHA PINTAR (Indonesia) | 09-30 | 91 | 197 / 197 |
| Nook: Trail & Hike Community | LOGICORE TECHNOLOGY LTD | 07-14 | 54 | 192 / 82 |
| Bello: Nightlife & Friends | BOLTRIX TECHNOLOGY LTD | 09-04 | 44 | 1021 / 28 |
| Lento: DIY Bracelet Studio | HELIX INNOVATIONS TECHNOLOGY LTD | 07-13 | 81 | 207 / 21 |
| Renna-Live Stream&Connect | CELESTIA TECHNOLOGY LTD | 08-27 | 86 | 120 / 120 |
Ceno's rating curve is almost identical to Berk's: from 10-30, +118, +82, +74, +37, +29, +17 per day. Berk ran +139, +94, +55, +30, +19, +12. Same start day, same decay rhythm: likely the same operator or the same rating-farm vendor. Olen (11-03 to 11-05, +35, +61, +73 per day) and Renna (11-04 to 11-06, +16, +33, +51 per day) are running the same process in relay. So this isn't one independent developer's product. It's one account in a matrix of disguise apps.
4. Growth tactics
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Incentivized reviews / rating farming across multiple stores | 10-30 More than ten stores started gaining ratings on the same day, then the curve decays. US store reviews cluster between 10-27 and 10-29, all empty ones like "Fire" and "Good app". The sister app Ceno follows the same curve. | Likely (strong timing pattern, no direct evidence) |
| Chart push (chose low-bar Lifestyle category + small countries) | 11-06 charted in 101 stores' Lifestyle charts. In small countries like Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Jordan, a few dozen downloads can reach the overall top 100. | Confirmed (chart data) |
| Paid acquisition | The privacy label declares tracking identifiers (attribution SDK). It charted before the rating surge. Its same-seller Sube gained about 100k installs on Play in 7 days. | Inferred. Neither the Meta ad library nor the TikTok ad library (EU) shows an advertiser for Berk / Sube. TikTok mapping status is unconfirmed. |
| Offline coin dealers / agent top-ups | A Turkish user paid for tokens by EFT bank transfer and was asked for an ID number | One user testimony |
| Organic content / media / X / TikTok | Jina search, TikHub and x-radar all return nothing about this app. | Confirmed none |
Where the money comes from: the paid hook is coins spent on private messages and voice calls between users, up to $99.99 per transaction. For a paid-chat category like 1 to 1, revenue comes from a few large spenders topping up repeatedly, which is why it spreads across grossing charts more than free charts. The terms describe the coins as fees for "AI Ski Coach" Q&A, a cover story for reviewers.
5. Verdict
- Why it took off: distribution, not product. (1) It used a ski-tool wrapper to get iOS listing and a Lifestyle category; (2) two months after launch it shipped 1.1.0, probably when the B-side was switched on; (3) from 10-30 it pushed ratings and charts across 100 stores at once, winning top spots on small-country Lifestyle charts with few downloads and getting free exposure; (4) what actually keeps users and gets them to pay is paid chat with strangers plus virtual coins (1 with 1), a demand that has long existed in South Asia, the Middle East, Turkey and Latin America.
- Differentiation: none at the product level. It sells the same thing as Chamet and Tumile, and it doesn't compete with real skiing apps. The one thing that's "different" is the disguised topic (skiing is a category nobody questions, so review risk is low), but in the same matrix the other fronts rotate through stargazing, handcrafts, rowing, hiking and bracelets, so that isn't a moat either.
- Visibility: barely anyone knows about it. No press, no X, no TikTok, no disclosed revenue; only data sites like AppGazers and Similarweb have passively indexed the pages. But the playbook itself is openly discussed in overseas indie circles, and a batch of similar apps is already running.
- Risk: Apple pulling these shell apps under 2.3.1 (hidden features) / 4.3 is routine, and lifespans are usually just a few weeks to a few months. Reviews already contain "got scammed" complaints, and the sign-up requires a national ID number, which is a compliance risk.
6. What others can learn
- The sound part of the method: use low-barrier categories (Lifestyle) and seed small countries' charts, buying "100 multi-country chart placements" with very few downloads; one backend, multiple frontend shells, taking turns to push.
- Don't copy it wholesale: hidden features violate the App Store 2.3.1, getting caught means account bans, and it can drag down the whole developer account matrix. The only part worth borrowing is the rhythm of "pick obscure categories + push charts across several storefronts at once".
7. Uncertain
- What Berk's B-side actually is (video or voice, any hosts / guilds) is unverified: I didn't install it and am only inferring from reviews, terms, and the same seller's Sube.
- Paid acquisition channel: our Meta / TikTok ad libraries have no record of it, so it may be spending on Google UAC, Apple Search Ads, or Meta in the Middle East and South Asia (our discovery keyword list doesn't cover this direction).
- Whether "Berk SANDI" is a real person or a fictional persona, and whether a Chinese team is behind it operating through an Indonesian entity, is unverified.
- AppGazers' revenue and download figures are modeled estimates with wide ranges.
