"Stop memorizing words, learn roots": a Turkish developer timed a launch to an exam registration deadline and pushed a fully paid vocab App into the grossing chart

What it is A Turkish-language English vocabulary App that strings words together by Latin and Greek roots, built for people sitting the YDS and YÖKDİL exams. All content requires a subscription.

Why it took off The developer already had a previous App running on paid acquisition and subscriptions. This time they started Meta ads on the day exam registration closed, with "don't memorize, learn roots" serving directly as the ad copy, and a one-time lifetime purchase option catching candidates who only need it for a single cycle.

BHow you could follow Don't fight for space in Turkey. Take the formula of "local exam + roots as the ad hook + Meta ads timed to the exam window + monthly/yearly/lifetime tiers" into a language and exam where nobody does this yet, and move before the developer's own multilingual versions roll out.

Grade B: the recipe is clear and few people know about it, and it could be copied into other countries. But the revenue itself is small, ad payback isn't proven, vocab is a crowded niche, the roots feature is easy for anyone to copy, and the developer has already prepared interfaces in five languages. Few people know about it yet

Wordana is an English vocabulary App by Turkish developer Emir Güngör. The interface is in Turkish, and its hook is stringing English words together by Latin and Greek roots, aimed at people preparing for the YDS and YÖKDİL. There isn't a single free word; everything requires a subscription. Less than two months after launch it has only 106 ratings, yet it spent over a week on the Turkish education top-grossing chart. The scale is tiny, but the playbook is complete and can be copied to other languages and exams. This piece covers how it got started, how crowded the niche is, and how you could follow.

Oct 8, the day registration closed

Turkey's English proficiency exam YDS is run by the testing center ÖSYM, and it's required for graduate school, promotions and civil service. Registration for the second YDS of 2026 opened on Sep 30, closed on Oct 8, and the exam is on Nov 22 (ÖSYM website).

Wordana's first Meta ad went live on Oct 8. After that 10-14, 10-22, 10-23, 10-27, 10-28, 11-03 new creatives were added in turn, and on Nov 5 it added 5 new creatives in a single day. Searching "wordana" in the Meta Ad Library's Turkey region, the first screen shows 11-06 ads, 16 in total. Nearly all the copy uses the same hook:

  • "İngilizce kelime ezberlemeyi bırak. Kökünü öğren…" (Stop memorizing English words. Learn their roots…)
  • "10 words in 1.000 days?" (10 days, 1,000 words)
  • "Ezber kartlarımı yaktım" (I burned my flashcards)

Every ad honestly carries the line "Tüm içerik Wordana Pro aboneliği gerektirir": all content requires a Wordana Pro subscription.

On Oct 29 it first entered the Turkey App Store education top-grossing chart, at #150. Its best in Nov 3 was #102, and on Nov 6 it was #131. It never charted overall.

What it is

A vocab App with 4,723 words, 12 flashcard sets, and 310 "verb/adjective + preposition" collocations (depend on, afraid of, formatted as YDS-style fill-in-the-blank), plus spaced repetition. What truly sets it apart from peers is "Kök Atlası" (root atlas): 85 roots, of which 62 have dedicated practice units. The store page's example is fer (to carry): learn this one root and transfer, refer, prefer, infer, confer come for free, with no memorizing each one.

Pricing (App Store Turkey storefront, 11-06):

TierPricingapprox. (est.)
Monthly subscription₺149.99about $3.5
Annual subscription₺599.99about $14
Lifetime purchase₺1,499.99about $35

The store page is blunt: "No free content, no free tier, no free trial." No account sign-up, and no ads in the App. Between Nov 5 and 6 it shipped three versions in a row, 1.3.3, 1.3.4, 1.4.0. 1.4.0 added an onboarding flow after purchase: tap transport and it breaks down into roots for you.

(Turkey App Store rating count; Apple's API returned 11-06 entries, average 106 4.63)

1 to 6 new ratings a day. The Android version only launched in October, with 1,000+ installs (AppBrain). The bar to reach the top hundred of the Turkey education top-grossing chart is low. Monthly revenue is estimated at a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars, unverified. It's also possible that ad spend bought its way onto the chart; whether the ad money pays back isn't visible from outside.

One ad started running on 10-28 claims "50.000+ downloads" (50k+ downloads), which doesn't match the Android 1,000+ or the iOS hundred-plus ratings. It may include the developer's other Apps, or it may simply be inflated, unverified.

Why this developer made it work

He isn't new. Emir Güngör's previous App is Amel, a Turkish-language Islamic prayer assistant launched in May 2026. It now has 1,472 ratings in the Turkey store, and third-party estimates put its downloads above 200k (AppMagic, estimate). He also has an English Bible devotional App called Lumen. Single market, local language, Meta ads, subscription paywall: he already ran this whole stack on Amel, and Wordana applies the same infrastructure to a new category. The Android privacy notice states that ad IDs and purchase events are shared with Meta and TikTok, and the App Store links on the landing page carry channel tracking parameters, standard practice for attribution-driven acquisition.

The hook is itself the ad. "4,000 YDS words" doesn't stop anyone scrolling Reels; "predict, contradict, verdict, dictate, indicate, it turns out they share one root" makes people pause for a second. Each creative covers one root, so creatives can be produced without end. The Instagram account @wordana.app posts a steady series titled "Bir kök, beş kelime" (one root, five words).

The lifetime purchase catches exam-takers. People who are done with the exam hate auto-renewals most. ₺1,499.99 paid once suits someone who just wants to get through this season.

It put something genuinely useful on the biggest local forum. On Ekşi Sözlük, Turkey's largest anonymous forum, an old thread titled "yds'den yüksek puan alma yolları" (ways to score high on YDS) has over 300 replies. One reply reads: "Did you know predict, contradict, verdict, dictate and indicate come from the same Latin root? ...In this resource I keep updating, I've grouped about 1,300 words by shared roots." Below it hang 69 follow-up posts, running from ab (away) and ad (toward) through to via (road), ending with antonym pairs. Near the end: "kelimeleri düzenli bir şekilde tekrar etmek isteyenler wordana uygulamasından da yararlanabilir" (those who want to review these words regularly can also use the Wordana App). It also attaches four screenshots of people saying the method works. The author writes in the first person, and the root tables match the App's content, so the inference is that it's the developer, unverified.

Its own social accounts drive very little: 428 Instagram followers, 17 TikTok followers, 15 YouTube subscribers. The real traffic comes from Meta paid ads.

Who it's competing with

Vocab-learning is one of the most crowded categories on the Turkey App Store. Searching "kelime / ingilizce / yds / vocab" returns over 200 results, and in the past 2026 years dozens of indie vocab Apps have launched.

I haven't found a second App in the Turkey storefront that teaches English roots in Turkish. The ones with Kök (root) in the name teach the etymology of Turkish words. In the English-speaking world, Membean and Magoosh have long taught vocab through roots, but there's no Turkish-language version.

So the difference is real, and it's part of why it took off. But the difference is mainly a hook for ads. The method itself isn't new, and someone could copy it in two weeks. What actually blocks people is whether they can buy paid traffic and whether that traffic pays back.

It's already preparing to go global

The App Store description says the interface and word definitions support 6 native languages: Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, German. The app can be downloaded in the US, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Korea and other stores, but its store page is still in Turkish, and those stores have zero ratings (Apple API, 11-06). In other words, the founder has already laid half the groundwork for 'build it in another language.'

If it were you

Bottom line: This isn't a hit you can copy directly. The Turkish vocab market is crowded, and it itself is only just getting started. What's worth following is the formula: a local exam, plus a memory method that works as an ad hook, plus Meta ads during exam registration windows, plus a lifetime one-time purchase. Move that to a language and exam nobody is doing this way yet.

Who it's for: Small teams or solo founders who can run Meta ads and work out payback periods. Ideally, someone who is a native speaker of a non-English language and knows that market's exam calendar, forums and way of talking.

Who it's not for: People who won't run paid ads and hope for organic growth from store search. Dozens of similar YDS vocab apps that don't advertise are stuck at two-digit ratings. It's also not for people who want to build a 'more-features flashcard app': it can't beat Anki or Quizlet on features, and it can't beat a player of Blarma's size either.

How to do it:

  • Pick a combination where an app doesn't exist yet: an exam with fixed dates, a vocabulary component, and word roots explained in the local language. Examples: IELTS in Vietnam or Indonesia, English proficiency exams in Poland or Ukraine, IELTS / STEP in the Arabic-speaking world. First check whether the local App Store has any 'local language + English roots' product, then check that exam's calendar.
  • Don't stop at roots. Roots are the hook; the content should follow the exam: high-frequency words from past papers, preposition fill-in exercises for the question types. That's what keeps paying users around.
  • Price it like they do: monthly, annual, and lifetime, with the lifetime tier aimed at exam takers. You could add a short free trial, which they don't offer, and see whether conversion changes.
  • Move fast. Wordana already supports Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and German interfaces. The day it localizes its store pages and starts advertising in those countries, the early window closes. Avoid those five languages, or get there before it does.

How to acquire users: Meta ads, with each creative explaining one root ('this word is really 5 words'), launched on the registration deadline and scaled up 6 weeks before the exam. At the same time, post a free, genuinely useful root reference sheet on the biggest local exam forum or in experience posts, ending with one line about the app.

When to be early: Follow the target exam's calendar and aim for the next registration deadline. In Turkey, YDS runs twice a year plus monthly e-exams, so the window stays open. If you're launching in a different country, aim to go before Wordana ships its multilingual versions.

Signs you've misread it: If after the Nov 22 exam Wordana drops out of the education top-grossing chart and stops advertising, the approach only sustained one exam season and revenue couldn't cover the ad spend. Conversely, if it stays on the charts after the exam season, or starts getting ratings and ads in Spanish or Japanese markets, the formula is replicable, and the founder himself will be your most direct competitor.

  • Verified Meta paid ads (FB/IG): Searching 'wordana' in the Meta Ad Library, TR region, the first screen shows 16 ads, rolling out from 10-08, with 11-05 new ads added per day 5. Every ad copy is a root hook. The Play privacy disclosure says ad IDs and purchase events are shared with Meta and TikTok.
  • Verified Exam-season timing: ÖSYM: 2026-YDS/2 registration 9-30 to 10-08, exam 11-22. Ads started running 10-08, and the app entered the top-grossing chart 10-29 later.

One line

An English vocabulary app by Turkish indie developer Emir Güngör, with an all-Turkish interface: 4,723 words, 85 Latin/Greek roots (a 'Kök Atlası' root map), 310 preposition collocations, and spaced repetition, aimed at the YDS / YÖKDİL / YDT exams. All the content is behind a subscription (monthly ₺149.99, annual ₺599.99, lifetime ₺1,299.99).

Verdict

It's gaining some traction, but it can't be called a breakout. Three things drove it:

  1. The developer has experience: His previous app Amel (a Turkish Islamic prayer assistant, launched 2026-05) already has TR 1,472 ratings, and AppMagic estimates over 200k downloads. He already has the whole playbook: ads, RevenueCat, paywall.
  2. Timed paid Meta ads to the exam season: 2026-YDS/2 registration runs 9-30 to 10-08, with the exam on 11-22. Wordana's Meta ads started right at 10-08, have kept running, and keep swapping creatives.
  3. It has a clear selling point: 'Don't memorize words, learn roots' (port = taşımak → import, export, transport…). That line is both a product feature and ready-made ad copy and content.

Still small: it ranks #102–167 in the TR education top-grossing chart, has 104 ratings, and adds 1–6 new ratings a day.

Data

  • Launched 2026-09-14, Turkish only, in 1 store. iOS ratings went from 10-28 80 to 11-06 104,9 days +24,7 days +18 (appstore library). The lookup returned 106 ratings at 11-06, averaging 4.63.
  • Charts (appstore library, chart_rank, tr, education 6017): From 10-28 to 11-03 it ranked 128–181 on the free chart. From 10-29 it entered the top-grossing chart; 10-29 was #150, and its best was #102 (11-03), while 11-06 was #131. It has never charted overall.
  • Frequent updates: 11-05 through 11-06 shipped 1.3.3, 1.3.4, and 1.4.0,1.4.0, the last adding onboarding after paywall.
  • On Android it's listed in 2026-10, and AppBrain shows 1,000+ installs. It's not in the googleplay library.
  • For comparison: on the same 11-06 TR education top-grossing chart, the top English-learning app at #2 is Learna (36,641 ratings), #6 is Widget Vocabulary (launched 2026-06, 454 ratings), and #18 is Blarma (5,985 ratings, 7 days +326). The revenue bar for the 100-plus spots on the TR education top-grossing chart is low, estimated at a few hundred to one or two thousand dollars a month (unverified).

Competitors

Searching the TR region for 'kelime / ingilizce / yds / vocab / english' returns over 200 apps in the library. The niche is extremely crowded, with dozens of vocab apps from Turkish solo developers launched in the past 2026 years.

I couldn't find a Turkish-market app built around English word roots in the TR store. Every app in the library with "Kök / Köken" in the name covers the etymology of Turkish words (Köken: Word Tree, Kökçe, Köken Bil). So the positioning "Turkish explanations of English roots + exam prep" is, for now, Wordana alone.

Growth tactics (evidence)

  2. Launch timing matches exam season (confirmed): The ÖSYM site lists the 2026-YDS/2 registration window as 9-30 to 10-08, with the exam on 11-22. Meta ads started 10-08, and by 10-29 the app had entered the TR Education Top Grossing chart.
  3. Content placement on Ekşi Sözlük (confirmed): Ekşi Sözlük is Turkey's largest anonymous Q&A forum. In the thread "yds'den yüksek puan alma yolları" (ways to score high on the YDS), entry #182725775 is a long post that organizes about 1,300 words by root, followed by 69 more root groups in later entries, ending with "kelimeleri düzenli tekrar etmek isteyenler wordana uygulamasından da yararlanabilir" (people who want to review these words regularly can also use Wordana). The thread also includes a screenshot of someone saying the method works. The author is likely the developer or someone close to them (unverified).
  4. Owned social accounts (confirmed, but small): Instagram @wordana.app has 428 followers and 39 posts, daily reels in a "Bir kök, beş kelime" (one root, five words) series; TikTok @wordana.app has 17 followers, 24 videos, and 81 likes in total; YouTube @wordanaapp has 15 subscribers and 36 videos. A separate YouTube channel, Pro-testing (341 subscribers), also says in a video description "Kök atlası uygulamamız WORDANA yayında" (our root atlas app WORDANA is live), with a landing page at wordana-indir.netlify.app. The App Store link on that page carries ct=landing_wordana_landing, so it's channel-tracked. The recall notes cite "heavy traffic from word-card reels on Instagram," but what we actually see is the owned account posting, with very few followers. The real volume is most likely from paid Meta.
  5. Store search: The name includes "İngilizce Kelime", and the Play title is "Wordana: YDS İngilizce Kelime", so it targets keyword search. Google Play results carry utm_term=wordana+İngilizce+kelime, which shows people are also searching the brand name directly.
  6. No mentions found on X, Reddit, or media (x-radar: 60 posts over 0 days).

Why it took off (inference plus evidence)

  • Why users show up now: The November YDS is coming, and e-YDS can be taken every month, so vocabulary is a hard requirement. The ads went live on the registration deadline and caught the pre-exam paid-acquisition window.
  • Where users come from: mainly Meta (Instagram/Facebook) paid ads, then the Ekşi Sözlük thread and store search.
  • Why they pay: There's no free content, everything is locked, so the only route is a subscription. There's also a ₺1,299.99 lifetime one-time purchase, which fits exam-takers' "I'll be done after the test" mindset. There are no review samples (reviews only cover 22 main storefronts, TR isn't among them), so retention is unverified.
  • The developer took the playbook that worked for Amel (Turkish language, single market, Meta ads, RevenueCat subscriptions) and applied it to a new category.

Differentiation

Most apps in this category are basically "YDS word list + flashcards + spaced repetition." Wordana's difference is the "root map" (85 roots, 62 of them with dedicated practice units) plus YDS-style preposition fill-in-the-blank. That difference is genuinely one of the reasons it's working, because it gives the ads and content a hook: every ad is a small "wait, these words share a root" moment, which sells better in Reels than "4,000 YDS words." But the root-memory method itself isn't new (Membean has it, and people on Ekşi have long been compiling root lists), so the feature is easy to copy. Its real moat is creative cadence and ad payback, not the product itself.

Visibility

Few people know about it yet. Revenue isn't public, there's no press coverage, and there are 0 posts on X; the social accounts combined have under 500 followers. It's only been mentioned in one YDS thread on Ekşi.

Copycats

No one copying the root-based approach specifically has turned up yet. A wave of Turkish indie devs have released YDS/vocab apps around the same time (Fable Words 09-20, VocabAnt 09-19, Wordlet 10-02, Memsy 10-26, Lexi, YDS Vocab Packs, and others). It's the same trend, not copying Wordana.

What others can borrow

  • Minority language × local exam × a study method that works as an ad hook, e.g. roots, homophones, visual memory. The selling point doubles as the ad copy: one creative explains one root.
  • Time ads to the exam registration deadline and the 6 weeks before the test; sell a lifetime one-time purchase to catch users who only need the app for one exam cycle.
  • Post genuinely useful long-form content (like an organized root table) in a major local forum's exam-experience threads, and end with a line about the app.
  • One developer runs several opportunities at once (religion, English, Bible devotionals), testing new categories on the same ads and subscription infrastructure.

Unknowns

  • How much was spent on ads and whether it pays back. Revenue corresponding to a rank of around 100+ on the TR Education Top Grossing chart is probably low, and the chart position may have been bought with ad spend.
  • Where the "50.000+ indirme" ad copy came from.
  • Who wrote the Ekşi entry, when it was posted, and when Wordana was added to it.
  • Retention and review content (there are no review samples for TR).
  • Only the first 16 Meta Ad Library results were checked, so the total number of ads running is unknown.
