# No free trial, but someone named Renata helps you set it up: a Brazilian budgeting app with only 28 ratings squeezed into the finance Top Grossing chart with this move

**What it is** A subscription budgeting app from Brazil: no bank connection; it reads the push notifications from your bank app (on iPhone, via Shortcuts) to log each purchase automatically, sorts them with AI, and tells you how much you can still spend today. Monthly R$19,90, yearly R$149,90.

**Why it's taking off** The Brazilian finance Top Grossing chart is shallow; #9 has only 6 ratings. It has no free trial, so nearly everyone who downloads pays, and a support agent, Renata, helps them set up the automation one-on-one over WhatsApp, which keeps people around and brings in reviews. A few subscriptions a day is enough to chart.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another budgeting app in Brazil. Take the "hard paywall + a human on WhatsApp who helps you set it up" playbook to Spanish-speaking Latin America (Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile), where the Top Grossing charts are even thinner, or apply it to other "useful but hard for regular people to set up" tools.

C grade: the playbook is clear and cheap to copy, worth learning. But there are over a hundred automatic budgeting apps in Brazil, the notification reading and Shortcuts are built into the platforms so there's no moat, and its own revenue is only in the low thousands of USD a month (est.), so copying the category isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

PingDin is an automatic budgeting app built by an indie developer in Brazil. It doesn't connect to banks; it reads the push notifications from banking apps to log every purchase automatically. Listed in Sep 24; by Nov 6 it had only 28 ratings on iPhone in total, yet from Oct 28 it charted daily on the Brazilian App Store finance Top Grossing chart, peaking at #19. The features aren't novel; Brazil already has over a hundred similar apps. It charted because of two things: nothing works until you pay, and once you do, a real person on WhatsApp walks you through the automation. This playbook is worth learning, but don't copy the category.

### One review: "Renata helped me at every step"

Oct 30, a five-star review from the Brazilian store:

> A atendente Renata a todo momento me ajudou em cada passo me explicando cada detalhe com paciência... às vezes eu demorava pra responder e logo que eu respondia ela já me retornava. (The agent Renata helped me at every step, explaining every detail patiently... sometimes I took a while to reply, and as soon as I did she got back to me right away.)

Scrolling back, there are more: "A Renata que me atendeu no Whats é uma querida!!! Tive dúvidas e ela fez todo o passo a passo comigo" (Renata, who helped me on WhatsApp, is a sweetheart!!! I had questions and she walked me through every step); "Na instalação o suporte me ajudou a automatizar do começo ao fim" (During installation support helped me automate it from start to finish).

Of the 17 Brazilian reviews visible on the App Store, 13 are five-star, 9 praise support, and 5 name Renata directly. These reviews cluster between Oct 18 and 30, and nearly all say some version of "just started using it, support is great." Inference: after support helps users set it up, they're asked to leave a review.

The other 4 reviews are one- and three-star, and they're all about the same thing:

> Couldn't even get into the app to test it, only paying. (10-23)

> Impossible to pay for an app without being able to use it for even a day or two. (10-18, titled "Sem Trial", meaning no trial)

Put together, these two sides are the whole playbook.

### What it is

A budgeting app built on "you don't have to enter anything":

- **Automatic logging** : on Android you grant it permission to read notifications; when your bank app pops up "you spent R$45", it logs the entry. On iPhone it shows you how to build an automation in Shortcuts that sends each card transaction to the app.

- **No bank connection** : it doesn't use Brazil's Open Finance and doesn't ask for bank passwords. The first FAQ on its site is "Will PingDin get my bank password?" and the answer is no.

- **AI categories and a daily budget** : it sorts spending into food, transport, shopping, and so on, then tells you "how much you can still spend today." Later it added "Can I afford this?", importing bank statements and invoices, recognizing Pix transfers and recurring bills, and an AI chat assistant.

The developer, InfoLabs LTDA, has only this one app. The Android package name is com.gabrielcardozo.pingdinapp, and the sample user in the site screenshots is also called Gabriel. It updates very frequently: Oct 6 was 1.0.5, by Nov 6 it was 1.0.17, and about 12 versions shipped in six weeks. One critical review said the categories were too coarse, and they were changed soon after (App Store version history).

Users praise the automatic logging most. One five-star review from Oct 17: "Logging automatically through bank app notifications, genius."

### How it makes money: no free tier, no trial

Pricing (in-app purchases on the Brazilian App Store, 11-06): monthly R$19,90 (about $3.6), yearly R$149,90 (about $27). No free tier and no trial period; the site says "full features require a subscription."

So nearly all its downloads are paying users or people who delete it and leave. 28 ratings looks small, but counted as paying customers it isn't small.

Its actual earnings aren't visible from outside. What we can confirm is chart position: Brazilian iPhone finance Top Grossing, #31 in Oct 28, #19 in Nov 2, then between #39 and #58 afterward, and #49 in Nov 6. The Portuguese and Irish finance Top Grossing charts occasionally show it at #63 to #158, though neither storefront has a single rating, so probably just a few sporadic purchases. On Android it has over 1 thousand downloads and 14 ratings, and in Nov 5 it ranked #26 on the Brazilian Google Play finance Top Grossing chart (AppWinners).

### Why 28 ratings can chart: this chart is shallow

The key is that the Brazilian finance Top Grossing chart is already shallow. On the same chart in Nov 6, #9 Meu Assessor had only 6 ratings, #20 Parker had 14, and #38 Pennli had 6. Among the top 50, 11 apps had fewer than 50 ratings.

In other words, a few R$19,90 or R$149,90 subscriptions a day is enough to stay on this chart (inference). At that rank, monthly revenue is probably in the low thousands to tens of thousands of reais, roughly $1,000 to $3,000-4,000 (est.).

A hard paywall works especially well on charts like this. A free-trial app has to build up a pool of trial users, and charges trickle in days later. PingDin charges on the day of download, and every paying user counts toward the rank immediately.

### Where users come from

| Channel | What we saw | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp human support | Of 17 reviews, 9 praise support and 5 name Renata | Confirmed |
| Store search | The name is "PingDin - Meus Gastos", and it directly uses "meus gastos" (my spending) as a search term; it ranks #9 for that search in Brazil, but doesn't appear in the top 100 for "controle de gastos" (spending control) (Apple search, 11-06) | Confirmed |
| Website SEO | pingdin.com.br has separate setup tutorials for Android and iPhone, a "how much can I spend per day" calculator, and 11 blog posts, such as "what to do when your salary doesn't last until month-end" and "spreadsheet or app" | Confirmed |
| Meta ads | Nothing found. Public ad libraries can't be viewed without logging in. Still, "hard paywall + WhatsApp follow-up" is a common acquisition approach in Brazil. | Inferred |
| TikTok, X, media | No related videos, posts, or press coverage found | None |

One five-star review is signed Daniel Cardozo Ferreira, sharing a surname with cardozo in the developer's package name, so possibly a relative (unverified).

Renata was really doing three jobs at once. Setting up iPhone Shortcuts and Android notification permissions is hard for most regular users; if it fails, they conclude "this doesn't work," then cancel and leave bad reviews. One person on WhatsApp walking them through it keeps them around, and once it works, she asks them for a good review. Early on one agent was enough, since Brazilians already live on WhatsApp.

### Who it's competing with

Brazil's budgeting app market is very crowded, roughly in four groups:

| Who | Scale (Brazilian App Store) | How PingDin differs |
|---|---|---|
| Mobills, Organizze | Veterans, about 170k and 46k ratings, finance Top Grossing #4 and #3 | Connect banks via Open Finance, have a free tier |
| Pierre (part of CloudWalk) | Listed in 2025-09, about 10k ratings, finance Top Grossing #2 | Big-company backing, Open Finance plus AI |
| Despezzas, Minhas Finanças | A few thousand to 10k ratings, finance Top Grossing #17 and #10 | Open Finance or AI assistant, full feature set |
| Meu Assessor, ZapGastos, Thor, GranaTrack and other small apps | A handful to a few dozen ratings, sitting right around PingDin | Log through chat with AI on WhatsApp, photo logging, statement imports; several also advertise "automatic logging from notifications" |

Then there are the banks themselves: Nubank and Bradesco's apps both ship with built-in spending categories and monthly summaries. The Shortcuts "Transaction" trigger has been an iOS feature since iOS 17, and anyone can use it. Since 2026, more than 150 apps with gastos, finanças or despesa in their names have launched in Brazil, roughly a new one every week through 9 November.

So PingDin's features aren't much of a moat. Notification reading and Shortcuts are provided by the platforms, and several others on the same chart are doing it. What sets it apart is how it charges and the human support agent.

### Nobody has noticed it yet

No public revenue, no press coverage, nothing on X or TikTok. Only a few auto-scraping chart sites index it. I found no one copying it, but dozens of small Brazilian apps doing AI bookkeeping, auto-tracking and WhatsApp expense logging appeared around the same time.

### If it were you

**C: Copy the playbook, not the product.** Brazil's auto-tracking space already has over 100 players, the features are built into the platform, and PingDin itself probably makes about $1–3.5K a month (est.). What's worth taking: in a shallow chart and category, pair a hard paywall with a real person on WhatsApp.

**Who it's for:** one or two people, with at least one native speaker of Portuguese, Spanish or another WhatsApp-heavy language, willing to be the first month's Renata themselves; and an app with a useful feature that ordinary users can't set up well.

**Who it's not for:** anyone building another auto-tracker in Brazil, where you'd queue behind 100+ apps including big-company products like Pierre; anyone unwilling to chat one-on-one with users; anyone counting on the product to spread by itself, since this playbook is manual by design.

**How to do it:** two routes. One: change country. In 6, among the top 50 iPhone finance grossers, Mexico and Colombia each had 18 apps rated under 50, Peru had 32 and Chile 27, all shallower than Brazil's 11. People there use WhatsApp daily and get bank push notifications too, so a Spanish-language "auto-tracking without bank linking" is worth checking first (inferred, not verified app by app). Two: change category. Other tools that "need setup to work well" (automation, household budgets, small-shop bookkeeping) can use the same model: charge at download, then move paying users into WhatsApp for one-on-one setup.

**How to get users:** name the app with the term locals actually search (PingDin uses "Meus Gastos"); put setup tutorials per platform, calculators and long-tail blog posts on the website from day one; ask for reviews right after setup. Hold off on ads until you have a few subscriptions a day and know what a paying user is worth, then test Meta with a small budget.

**When to move:** there's no hard deadline, since shallow charts don't get deep overnight. But apps like PingDin keep appearing every week, so the sooner you claim a country's keywords the better. Aim to launch before January 2027 (inferred: January is peak "new year, new budget" search season).

**What would show you're wrong:** ① PingDin adds a free trial or drops Renata and still stays on the chart, meaning this playbook isn't what's driving it; ② over the next month or two, refund and "charged me" complaints grow in PingDin's reviews and it drops out of the top 100, meaning the no-trial model can't hold; ③ Google Play restricts notification-reading permissions, or Apple changes the Shortcuts transaction trigger, cutting off the auto-capture route; ④ in your chosen country, the number of finance grossers rated under 50 in the top 50 drops sharply, meaning that chart is getting deeper too.

Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from this one |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobills | iOS | 2014 | About 170k ratings, #4 Brazil finance grossing | Links bank accounts via Open Finance, has a free tier; PingDin doesn't link banks and has no free tier |
| Organizze | iOS | 2013 | About 46k ratings, #3 finance grossing | Veteran manual entry plus Open Finance; PingDin auto-captures via notifications / Shortcuts |
| Pierre(CloudWalk) | iOS | 2025-09 | About 10k ratings, #2 finance grossing | Big-company backing, Open Finance plus AI agent; PingDin avoids bank authorization and relies on a human support person |
| Despezzas | iOS | 2023-10 | 5,754 ratings, #17 in Finance Top Grossing | Open Finance plus AI chat; PingDin doesn't link banks |
| Minhas Finanças | iOS | 2024-05 | About 10k ratings, #10 finance grossing | Full-featured AI tracker; PingDin leads with auto-capture and manual onboarding |
| Meu Assessor | iOS | 2026-09-20 | 6 ratings, #9 in Finance Top Grossing | Logs expenses by chatting with an AI assistant in WhatsApp; PingDin auto-captures in-app and uses WhatsApp only for human support |
| Standalone small apps like ZapGastos, Thor, Paguei! | iOS | 2026-04 ~ 2026-10 | A few to dozens of ratings, around #20–60 in finance grossing | Manual entry by voice, photo, WhatsApp or PDF import; PingDin pulls notifications automatically |
| Bank apps' built-in categories, and the iOS Shortcuts "Transaction" trigger | Big-company features | iOS 17 (2023) and up | All users | PingDin packages the platform features into one cross-bank ledger, then adds budgets and AI categorization |

Where users come from

- **Verified** **WhatsApp human onboarding plus prompted reviews:** of the 17 Brazilian reviews I could pull from RSS, 9 praise support, and 5 name "Renata" ("A Renata que me atendeu no Whats", "suporte me ajudou a automatizar do começo ao fim"), clustered between 10-18 and 10-30

- **Verified** **SEO website:** pingdin.com.br has 11 long-tail blog posts, a daily spending-allowance calculator, and Android / iPhone setup tutorials (sitemap.xml)

- **Verified** **Store search / ASO:** the title includes "Meus Gastos", and in the iTunes search API for the Brazil store it ranks #9 for "meus gastos"; it doesn't appear in the top 100 for "controle de gastos"

- Inferred **Meta / Google paid ads:** not in our metaads library, and the ad library pages can't be viewed without logging in; a WhatsApp-support-plus-hard-paywall funnel is a common paid acquisition play in Brazil, so this is a guess

- Inference **Friends and family review** : One 5-star review signed Daniel Cardozo Ferreira, sharing a surname with the developer's package name gabrielcardozo

- Inferred **TikTok / X / press:** a TikHub search for "pingdin" returns no relevant videos, x-radar shows 90 posts in 0 days, and there's no press coverage

## PingDin - Meus Gastos (iOS id6804816352) research report

Data as of 2026-11-06. Stores checked: our App Store library scanned all 115 storefronts. The app only appears on the finance grossing charts for br (Brazil), pt (Portugal) and ie (Ireland); br is the only one with ratings. On Google Play I used the store page and the public AppWinners pages.

### One line

A subscription auto-tracker built by an independent Brazilian developer (InfoLabs LTDA, Play package com.gabrielcardozo.pingdinapp). It doesn't link banks (no Open Finance, no passwords). On Android it reads bank app notifications; on iPhone it uses Shortcuts automations to capture spending, with AI categorization, plus "how much can I still spend today" and "can I afford this". **It has a hard paywall at download with no trial** , and a real person named Renata helps users set up the automations one-on-one over WhatsApp.

### Verdict

It didn't grow through volume. **Brazil's finance grossing chart has a low bar, and a hard paywall plus human WhatsApp setup turned a small number of downloads into almost all paying users** . 28 ratings reaching #19–58 on the grossing chart mostly shows the chart is shallow, not that the app is big. The real differentiator is auto-tracking without bank linking, with human service making a hard-to-configure feature work. Conversion and human service are the direct reasons it charts; auto-tracking itself is crowded in Brazil and not scarce.

### Data (source: our appstore library app_day, Apple lookup / store page)

- Listed 2026-09-24, with very fast version churn: 1.0.5 (10-06) → 1.0.17 (11-06), roughly 12 versions in about a month and a half, nearly one every 2–4 days (Apple store version history).

- Ratings: 10-28 has 24, 11-06 has 28 (Apple lookup gives 29, average 4.34). Up +4 over the last 7 days, 0–3 a day, a very small volume.

- Brazil iPhone finance grossing chart (genre 6015): #31,10-29 10-28, #23,11-02, #19,11-03, #21, then 39 / 58 / 49,11-06 at #49; on the chart every day since 10-28. Never reached the overall chart.

- Finance grossing #68–158 in Portugal and #63–110 in Ireland, both with 0 ratings, so likely just a trickle of purchases.

- Chart bar for reference: on the same day, Meu Assessor, at #9 Brazil finance grossing, had only 6 ratings; Parker at #20 had 14; Pennli at #38 had 6 (appstore library app_profile, cc=br). So reaching the top 50 on Brazil's finance grossing chart takes only a few subscriptions a day.

- Pricing (Apple Brazil store in-app purchases): PingDin Premium R$19,90 (monthly), R$149,90 annually.

- In Apple's search API, searching "meus gastos" in the Brazil store ranks it #9 (the name includes Meus Gastos); it doesn't appear in the top 100 for "controle de gastos" (iTunes search, 11-06).

### Competitors

Brazil's auto-tracking space is crowded, roughly in three groups:

1. **Big players connecting banks via Open Finance** : Mobills (2.01B valuation, owned by Toro Investimentos), Organizze (201M), Pierre (CloudWalk/InfinitePay, launched 2025-09, about 10k ratings, #2 finance grossing in Brazil), Despezzas (2023,5,754 ratings, Open Finance plus AI chat), and Minhas Finanças (202M ratings, AI assistant Mia). These either link banks for free or offer a trial.

2. **WhatsApp trackers / AI assistants** : Meu Assessor (launched 2026-09-20, reached #9 finance grossing with only 6 ratings), ZapGastos (launched 2026-10-19), and Thor (2026-05, logs via chat or photo).

3. **Standalone indie apps around the same time** : since 2026, our library has over 150 Brazil-storefront apps launched with gastos / finanças / despesa in the name, and new ones appear every week from 9 to November. They sit right around PingDin on the charts (Calen at #47, Thor at #50, Coupe at #53, Pennli at #38). Apps whose descriptions mention "notifications / Shortcuts + automatic" include GranaTrack (2026-10-01), Parker, Snabber, Lode and Rota Pro.

4. **Big-company and bank features** : Nubank, Bradesco and other bank apps include built-in spending categories and monthly summaries. The iOS Shortcuts "Wallet Transaction" trigger, available since iOS 17, is platform capability anyone can use.

How it differs from these: it doesn't link banks (selling privacy and security, and skipping the Open Finance consent step); one app covers both bank-app notifications and Pix detection; there's no free tier and no trial; and a person helps with setup one-on-one over WhatsApp.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

- **WhatsApp human onboarding plus prompted reviews (confirmed):** of the 17 Brazilian reviews I could pull from RSS, 9 praise the support or the human help, and 5 name "Renata" ("A Renata que me atendeu no Whats", "Na instalação o suporte me ajudou a automatizar do começo ao fim"). These praise reviews cluster between 10-18 and 10-30, with the tone "just started using it, the support was great", much like reviews requested right after setup (Apple review RSS). There's also a 5-star review signed "Daniel Cardozo Ferreira", sharing a surname with gabrielcardozo in the developer's package name, likely a friend or relative (unverified).

- **SEO on the official site (confirmed)** : pingdin.com.br has feature pages, separate setup guides for Android and iPhone, a "how much can I spend per day" calculator, and 11 blog posts (how to organize your salary, when your salary doesn't last to the end of the month, how to log expenses automatically, spreadsheet vs App, etc.) all targeting long-tail searches Brazilians actually make. Visible in the sitemap (fetched via Jina).

- **Store keywords (partly confirmed)** : the title is "PingDin - Meus Gastos", it rides on the term "meus gastos", and it ranks #9 in iTunes search.

- **Paid ads (unconfirmed)** : it's not in our Meta Ad Library (that library only tracks advertisers surfaced by keyword search results, so absence doesn't mean no spend); the Meta Ad Library web view can't be read logged-out. Still, a hard paywall with WhatsApp support is a common Brazilian "Meta ad → download → pay → WhatsApp follow-up" play, so we assume some small-budget spend.

- **Content / creators / press** : searching "pingdin" on TikTok turns up no relevant videos; X corpus (x-radar, 90 days) has 0 posts; no Instagram account found; no press coverage.

### Why it took off

1. **Hard paywall** : you can't get in without paying after downloading (a negative review literally says "nem consegui entrar no aplicativo para testar, só pagando" and "Sem Trial"), so the downloads that stick are almost all paying customers, and even a small number of downloads can buy a Top Grossing ranking.

2. **Low bar on the charts** : in Brazil's Finance Top Grossing chart, #9 takes only 6 ratings; PingDin sits at #19–#58, which roughly corresponds to a few R$19,90 / R$149,90 subscriptions a day.

3. **Human-guided setup fixes the hardest step in automation** : on iPhone you have to build Shortcuts yourself, and on Android you have to grant notification access. Users get stuck easily. Renata walks people through setup step by step on WhatsApp. Once users are set up, they rarely cancel, and they often leave reviews praising the support (9 of 13 5-star reviews praise the support).

4. **Positioning as "no bank connection, no passwords"** : aimed at people wary of Open Finance authorization or of giving apps permissions; the praise users actually give is "bank notifications get logged automatically, so clever".

5. **Fast iteration** : roughly 12 versions in a month and a half, quickly building in what the negative reviews asked for (categories too coarse, importing statements / invoices, recurring Pix expenses, an AI assistant).

### Differentiation

The differentiation has two layers. One is "automatic capture without bank connection + AI categorization"; the other is "hard paywall + human WhatsApp service." The first layer isn't scarce on its own: notification reading and Shortcuts are platform capabilities, and several other apps in the same tier already do it. What gets it onto the charts is the second layer: the monetization model and the service. It's more a paid-from-the-start service product than a tool that spreads on its own.

### How visible it is

Almost nobody knows about it yet: no public revenue, no press or X coverage, no TikTok content; only automated ranking sites like AppInsider and AppWinners have listed it.

### Copycats

We didn't find anything directly copying it. But there are dozens of small Brazilian apps with the same positioning (AI expense tracking / automatic capture / WhatsApp bookkeeping), e.g. GranaTrack, ZapGastos, and Meu Assessor, all launched later or around the same time, so the niche is already crowded.

### Takeaways

- In a country and category where the Top Grossing bar is low (Brazilian personal finance), a hard paywall can turn a trickle of downloads into chart rankings and revenue.

- When the feature is hard to set up, a one-on-one WhatsApp onboarding handles activation, retention and reviews at once, and the early cost is low (one support person).

- Using "no bank connection" as the trust selling point sidesteps the licensing and integration costs of Open Finance.

- The website first builds out SEO blog posts, a calculator and per-platform guides for long-term acquisition.

### Unknowns

- Actual paying user count and revenue can only be inferred from chart position as "a few sales a day."

- Whether it runs Meta / Google ads and how much (not found).

- Whether skipping the trial leads to high refund rates and bad reviews, and whether it can hold up; whether one-on-one support can scale.

- Whether Android's notification-reading permission will be blocked by Google Play policy; the iOS Shortcuts "Transaction" trigger only supports Apple Pay wallet cards, so coverage is limited (inferred).
