"Cauliflower turned into broccoli": a small Tokyo team's photo calorie app squeezes into the charts in Taiwan
What it is Snap a photo of a meal, and AI estimates the calories and the three macronutrients and flags the margin of error. If it's wrong, one sentence makes it recalculate the whole meal. Also includes friends, groups, and an AI companion called "Nanami".
Why it took off Taiwanese search demand for "photo calorie counting" was already built up by Cal AI and others. It puts the core keywords in its title, updates almost daily, and has gathered 4.98 in-app ratings, so it can rank on a low-bar category chart. No external channel was found.
CHow to play it Don't copy a calorie-counting app wholesale. Take its playbook instead: local-search keywords in the title, a local App comparison article, one-sentence corrections that recalculate the whole thing, and an iOS visual-intelligence entry point, aimed at a category or language that isn't crowded yet.

Nometer ("Snap Before Meal") launched in Oct 6 and about a month later was around #30 on Taiwan's Health & Fitness Top Free. It has no influencers, no media coverage, and no related TikTok videos. It relies on a traditional-Chinese title stuffed with search terms, near-daily updates, and a full set of invite and social features. The chart's bar is low, though, and it has only 59 ratings so far. The product is worth taking apart, but the category is already crowded.
A four-star review
In Oct 2026 23, a Taiwanese user gave Nometer four stars. They said that when work is busy they often only have time to snap the meal, not upload it, and the app can't backfill, "so one meal goes missing from the record". They also mentioned, "occasionally there's Chinese wording… (cauliflower turned into broccoli)". The last line: "otherwise it's been pretty good to use".
That review is almost a portrait of the app: it's carefully made and aimed at Taiwanese users, but the team behind it isn't in Taiwan. The developer is the godo kaisha Revu (REVU LLC), registered in Shinjuku, Tokyo in Aug 2026 3 with a capital of 1M yen, representative ZHANG XIAOTIAN. Their website calls themselves a "small team across cities and time zones". Nometer is their second product; the first is the SSH tool ConchTalk, launched in June, with 0 ratings in the US store so far.
What it is
Snap a photo of a meal and AI estimates four numbers (calories, fat, protein, carbs) and flags a likely margin of error. If it's wrong, you don't edit the numbers one by one. Just tell it in a sentence, like the line in the website comic "I only ate half the chicken", and the AI recalculates the whole meal. You confirm before it's saved.
On top of that is a heavy social layer: a friends feed (you only share the meals you pick), group chats, direct messages, a regional explore page and leaderboards, a cosmetics store, and an AI companion called "Nanami" who chats with you about what you ate and what to eat next. There's also Apple Watch support, home-screen widgets, a monthly calorie-balance calendar, and read/write access to Apple Health.
The app is free to download. In the Taiwan store, Nometer Pro is listed at NT$90 per month or NT$790 per year (App Store in-app purchase list, 11-06). New monthly subscribers get 7 off the first month. Starting from 1.1.0, Nanami is only available to Pro subscribers.

(App Store Taiwan daily chart and ratings. Apple 11-06 shows 59 ratings in total, 4.98 stars)
Outside Taiwan, only Hong Kong has occasionally charted, at Top Free 55 to 141, with 2 ratings in total. The other hundred-plus stores have never charted. Third-party AppInsider estimates 1k+ global installs.
Take this rank with a grain of salt. 11-06 It sits at #33 on the Taiwan Health Top Free chart with only 54 Taiwan ratings. Neighbors: SlimGo at #29 has 82 ratings, and InOut at #31 has 387. On a chart this thin, a few extra ratings a day moves you up a lot (estimated tens to a couple hundred downloads a day behind it). Top Grossing has held at #104 to #184, so some people are paying subscriptions, but the amounts are small.
Where users come from
Outside, there's almost no buzz. Search "饭前一拍" or "Nometer" and you'll find nothing but its own website and store page; no TikTok videos, nobody talking about it on X, Threads, or Dcard. Almost all of its traffic seems to come from inside the App Store:
- The title is the search term. The Taiwan title is "Nometer 飯前一拍|熱量計算、飲食紀錄" (Nometer, "eat-before-you-snap": calorie calculation and food logging), and the subtitle is "拍照AI 估算卡路里與營養,輕鬆減重" (AI photo estimates of calories and nutrition, easy weight loss). Both of the terms Taiwanese users search for most are in there. Nearly all its volume is in Taiwan. The Hong Kong store, which uses Simplified Chinese or English, gets almost nothing, which fits (inference, since I can't see search ranking data).
- A new version almost every day. It shipped about 16 versions in its first month, going from 1.0.6 to 1.1.2. 10-14 AppInsider first recorded it, and the next day it was in the Taiwan Health Top Free top 100 (AppInsider).
- Asks for ratings in the app. Only 4 of its 59 ratings have written text. The average is 4.98 stars, and 1.0.8 also has a "write a review" entry in Settings. Lots of ratings, little text, near-perfect scores: that usually means a rating prompt (inference). High scores make the store page convert better.
- Invites and sharing. When a friend finishes their first meal analysis, both the inviter and the invitee get 7 days of Pro. Each user has a short invite code. After the third meal logged, it prompts you to share your "today's calories" card to Instagram Stories or TikTok. These mechanics exist, but I can't see whether they work.
- A comparison post. In Oct 11, its official blog published 〈2026 Taiwan calorie-counting app roundup: 饭前一拍, Cal AI, SlimGo, MyFitnessPal〉, putting itself in the same table as the big brands, with a TDEE calculator on the side. A Japanese version compares あすけん, カロミル and Cal AI. Only three posts so far, so the traffic it brings is probably still small.
Is it paying for ads? I couldn't find it in Meta's ad library, and Apple Search Ads can't be checked from outside. But the 1.0.2 update notes say "Improvements to ad attribution and tracking stability," so it has at least wired up ad attribution. It may be spending on a small scale already, or getting ready to (inference).
Who it's competing with
"AI photo calorie counting" in Taiwan and Hong Kong is already crowded. In the Taiwan Health category alone, there are over a hundred apps with calories, calorie counter, or diet in the name, dozens of them new this year, and new ones keep showing up every week.
| Product | Launched | Scale (App Store, 11-06) | How Nometer differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| CaLoMei 卡老味 | 2026-03 | Hong Kong Health Top Grossing #1,6,031, 7 ratings, +223 in 1,196 days | Same kind of photo logging, built by an indie developer in the Chinese-speaking market. It has grown big, roughly 20 times Nometer's size |
| Cal AI | 2024-04 | 765 ratings in Taiwan, a global leader | Photo analysis requires a subscription, driven by influencer marketing |
| Gymwork / Calog | 2021 / 2026-01 | Gymwork Taiwan 4,005 , 7 days +270 | A local Taiwan team that started with workout logging |
| AI calorie calculator Appediet | 2023-08 | 7,126 in Taiwan | Pure utility, no social features |
| MyFitnessPal | 2009 | 23,904 in Taiwan | An established food database plus barcode scanning |
| SlimGo wants you to lose weight | 2026-04 | 82 in Taiwan, #29 on Top Free | Made by TVBS, with tasks designed by nutritionists |
| Milligram KILO | 2020 | 591 in Hong Kong | Already offers social weight loss with "eating together" friends |
There's another class of free competitors: iPhone's Visual Intelligence, ChatGPT, and Gemini can all take a photo and tell you the calories. Nometer's answer is that 1.0.8 plugged into Visual Intelligence, so any photo can be logged as "log this meal in Nometer." It turned the competitor into an entry point.
Does the differentiation work?
Its positioning is clearly stated: not the diet app with the most numbers, but the one that is "most honest with numbers and gentlest with people." It gives four numbers, shows error margins, recalculates a whole meal with one sentence, doesn't reward eating less, shares only meals you pick, and has a companion character, Nanami.
But going by the current data, users aren't coming in for these things. Most of them search for "calorie calculator" and arrive without knowing who Nanami is. The reviews praise it for being "convenient" and ask for features like backfilling entries and logging sleep manually. Nobody mentions companionship or "honesty."
There's also a mismatch between what the app says and what it does. The store description says "there is no public leaderboard here," yet the version history includes 1.0.11 "step leaderboard made public" and 1.0.17 leaderboard rankings with medals, plus country and region charts. The product is actually moving toward gamification and community, which pulls against its "gentle, no comparison" positioning.
Social and companion features only count once they actually drive growth. Right now it's adding 0 to 11 ratings a day, and that's not yet visible.
If it were you
As a C-tier opportunity, following it isn't worth it. Photo calorie counting in Taiwan is already a red ocean. The leaders are Cal AI, CaLoMei, and Gymwork, and new entrants show up every week. Nometer itself hasn't proven that its "honest + companion" approach brings volume. Copying it means following someone who hasn't broken out into a packed category. What's valuable is its tactics, which you can apply to other categories and other languages.
Who it's for: One or two people who already want to build an AI tool app for a small language or Chinese-speaking market. Ideally your native language is the target market's language, so you can write store copy that doesn't read like a translation and won't call 花椰菜 "西兰菜" (broccoli).
Who it's not for: Anyone who wants to build another generic AI calorie app and expects organic growth in Taiwan or Hong Kong. Anyone who can't run ads, has no content channels, and only plans to win by being "gentler." In this category, the apps that grew big either leaned on influencer ads (Cal AI) or claimed the local mindshare early (CaLoMei).
How to do it: Take its four moves and apply them to a category that isn't crowded:
- Put the terms locals search for directly in the title and subtitle, not brand slogans;
- Publish a "best local XX app" comparison, putting yourself in the same table as the big brands to catch long-tail searches for brand names;
- "Correct with one sentence, recalculate the whole thing" instead of making users edit numbers one by one. Works for any AI estimation product;
- Plug into system entry points like iOS Visual Intelligence. Send invite rewards only after the invitee completes their first core action, which prevents abuse and makes sure the people you bring in actually use the app.
If you insist on making a food logger, don't go head-to-head in Taiwan. Go to the markets it hasn't touched: its Japan and Korea users are so few they have to be merged into a single explore bucket, and the Android version isn't out yet (the website says "coming soon").
How to get users: Early on, rely on App Store search: keyword titles, frequent updates, in-app rating prompts, plus one or two local comparison posts. Once retention data holds up, test Apple Search Ads on category terms with a small budget. Build in share cards and invite codes from day one, since they cost almost nothing.
When to move: No rush, this isn't a window that will suddenly close. But the "photo calorie counting" keyword is being fought over by more new apps in every market, and the earlier you claim the search results for a language, the cheaper it gets.
What would show you got it wrong: ① Nometer's ratings climb into the hundreds before December, or it stays in the Taiwan Health Top Free top 10, or Top Grossing holds steadily in the top 50. That would mean "honest + companion" really does keep people paying, and the differentiation is worth copying seriously. ② Its Android or Japanese version charts locally soon after launch, which would show the playbook travels to other markets and there's more room to follow than it looks right now. ③ The reverse: if in a month or two it drops off the charts and updates stop, that means keyword titles and new-listing traffic alone can't sustain it for long.

Nometer, snap before you eat | Calorie calculator, food log (iOS 6804941429) research report
Bottom line: this is a small product that hasn't really taken off yet. 2026-10-06 on the App Store, only 59 ratings in one month, hovering around #29–#61 on Hong Kong's free Health & Fitness chart (a low bar). It shows up on charts because several things work together: a Traditional Chinese title stuffed with keywords that catches Taiwan's 'photo calorie counting' search demand; a release almost every day; an in-app prompt that pulled a 4.98-star rating; and referral and retention design, with invites that give Pro, share cards, groups and leaderboards. External channels (influencers, media, X, Threads, Dcard) show no evidence so far. The differentiation is 'honest estimates + a companion who knows you + the AI buddy Nanami', but nothing yet proves this drives volume.
1. What it is
- Snap a photo of a meal and AI estimates calories and the three macronutrients (fat, protein, carbs), with an error range. If it's wrong, you don't edit items one by one: a single sentence ('only half the chicken', 'an extra spoon of oil') and the AI re-analyzes the whole meal. Nothing is saved until you confirm, and it emphasizes 'on-device first' (website www.nometer.app, App Store description).
- Social layer: a friends feed (you choose which meals to share), group chat, direct messages, a discover page (recommended / newest / same region), country and regional leaderboards, a step leaderboard, a cosmetics shop and headwear; the AI companion 'Nanami' chats with you about what you ate and what to eat next (1.0.18 onward, a Pro-only feature).
- Also: Apple Watch, home-screen and lock-screen widgets, a calorie-surplus calendar, Apple Health read/write, and cycle tracking.
- Pricing: Free to download. Nometer Pro has monthly and annual plans. The monthly plan gives new users 7 off the first month (from 1.0.10). The annual plan has no free trial (per the official FAQ).
- Developer: REVU LLC (Godo Kaisha Revu), founded 2026-08-03 in Shinjuku, Tokyo, with capital of ¥1000K, representative member ZHANG XIAOTIAN (https://revuteams.com/). The website describes itself as "Team Nanami, a small team spread across cities and time zones." Nometer is their second product; the first is ConchTalk: AI SSH Agent (id6759644121,2026-06-09 on the App Store, 0 rating on the US store). The app supports 13 languages, and the website has five versions: English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The Android version is "coming soon."

Source: appstore library chart_rank / app_day (2026-10-28 to 11-06). Hong Kong only on the free chart, ranks #55–#141, with 2 ratings in total. The other 113 storefronts never charted.
- Apple lookup (11-06, Taiwan store): 59 ratings, averaging 4.983 stars, version 1.1.2.
- Third party, AppInsider (https://appinsider.io/app/nometer-ai-calorie-counter-6804941429): 10-14 first spotted it when it was #73 on Taiwan's free Health chart; 10-15 reached #100 on free and 10-21 reached #100 on grossing; estimated global installs of '1k+'; averaging 4 new ratings a week over the last 18 weeks. About 16 versions shipped in the first month (1.0.6 → 1.1.2).
- Benchmark: 11-06 Nometer hit #33 on Taiwan's free Health chart with only 54 Taiwan ratings; apps ranked around it have anywhere from tens to twenty thousand ratings (e.g. #29 SlimGo with 82 ratings, +3 in 7 days; #31 InOut with 387 ratings, +36 in 7 days). This category chart moves on a small amount of volume. Ranking #104–#184 on grossing points to some subscription revenue, but a small amount.
- Reviews: only 4 of the 59 ratings include text (Apple TW review RSS), all 4–5 stars, and the content is feature requests (add upload, manual sleep entry, a mainland-China term like '西蘭菜' showing up). Many ratings, little text, near-perfect scores: this fits an in-app rating prompt. 1.0.8 version added a 'Write a review' entry in settings.
3. Competitors: who does the same thing
'AI photo calorie counting' in Taiwan and Hong Kong is already crowded. In the appstore library alone, Taiwan's Health category has 100+ apps with calorie, kcal or diet in the name, and dozens launched in the past 2026 year.
| Product | Launched | Scale (appstore library / lookup, 2026-11-06) | How Nometer differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| CaLoMei 卡老味 (Tin Lok Chan, Hong Kong indie developer) | 2026-03 | HK health Top Grossing #1, overall Top Free #78,6,031 rating, 7 days +223; Taiwan Top Free #10,1,196 rating | Also an indie food-logging app from the Chinese-speaking world, but already at scale; Nometer is roughly 1/20 its size |
| Cal AI(Viral Development) | 2024-04 | 765 Taiwan ratings; a global leader, with the founder's income widely reported | Photo analysis requires a subscription and relies on influencer ads; Nometer is free to use and leads with companionship and honest estimates |
| Gymwork / Calog (Gymwork Inc., Taiwan) | 2021 / 2026-01 | Gymwork has 4,005 ratings in Taiwan, +270 in 7 days; Calog has 387 ratings | A local Taiwan team that started with fitness logging and then split out a photo food-log app |
| AI calorie calculator Appediet | 2023-08 | Taiwan 7,126 rating | Utility-style, no social layer |
| MyFitnessPal | 2009 | Taiwan 23,904 rating | Long-running food database with barcode scanning; Taiwan positioning is mainly search |
| SlimGo targets weight loss (TVBS) | 2026-04 | Taiwan 82 rating, free #29 | Made by a media group with dietitian-supervised missions, leveraging TVBS resources |
| InOut calorie counter | 2021-12 | Taiwan 387 ratings, +36 in 7 days | A long-standing small Taiwan utility |
| WiseMeal, Calo, FoodPilot, Eatmoji, Xiaoka Health, Milligram KILO and others | 2020–2025 | Tens to over a thousand ratings | Milligram KILO already had social weight loss with 'friends walking together', so social isn't a new idea |
| Big-company features | — | iOS 'Visual Intelligence', ChatGPT / Gemini photo calorie questions | A free general-purpose alternative; Nometer flips it around and catches this entry point with 1.0.8's "visual intelligence: log this meal with Nometer" |
Verdict: it's not that there are no competitors, it's that there are too many. Nometer is different in two ways: photo estimates lead with honesty (error ranges, recalculation from one sentence), and it leans hard on close-friend social plus AI companionship. But social weight loss has precedent (Milligram KILO).
4. Growth tactics: where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| App Store search (ASO) | The Taiwan title is "Nometer Before-Meal Snap | Calorie Counter, Food Log", subtitle "AI photo calorie & nutrition estimates, easy weight loss", putting the two terms Taiwan users search most straight into the title. It can rank around #30 on the Taiwan Top Free chart, while Hong Kong, a storefront with only Simplified Chinese or English, barely registers. | Highly inferred (search keyword rankings not accessible) |
| New-listing traffic + daily releases | About 16 releases a month (AppInsider timeline); 10-14 it was first noticed by a third party, and 10-15 it entered the Top Free top 100 | Yes |
| In-app rating prompt | 59 ratings but only 4 text reviews, average 4.98; 1.0.8 added a "Write a review" entry point. High ratings lift search conversion. | Inferred |
| Invite referral | 1.0.13: when an invited friend completes their first analysis, both get 7 days of Pro; 1.0.14: each user has a short invite code; 1.0.11: mutual follows automatically become friends | Yes (mechanism exists, effect unclear) |
| Social sharing | 1.0.7: a "Today's calorie share" card, one-tap share to Instagram Stories / TikTok; logging the 3st meal prompts a share | Yes (mechanism exists; searching "nometer" and "飯前一拍" on TikTok found no related videos) |
| SEO blog | 2026-10-11 published "2026 Taiwan calorie app comparison: 飯前一拍, Cal AI, SlimGo, MyFitnessPal", a TDEE calculator, and "Is AI photo calorie counting accurate?"; there are matching Japanese articles too (comparing あすけん, カロミル, Cal AI) | Yes (only 3 articles, recently launched, so traffic is likely small) |
| Paid ads | Not in the Meta Ad Library (metaads); Apple Search Ads can't be checked | Unverified |
| Creators, media, X, Threads, Dcard, Reddit | Jina / Exa / Brave searches for "飯前一拍" and "Nometer" turned up nothing beyond the official site and store page; not in the x-radar X corpus either | Not found |
5. Why it charted ("breaking out" is still too early to say)
- The demand already exists: in Taiwan, search volume for "photo calorie counting" was built up by products like Cal AI and CaLoMei, and GLP-1 hype has pushed weight-loss logging apps higher too (Molife and mojo, GLP-1 tracking apps, are on the charts). Once Nometer shows up in search results, it can capture that volume.
- The category chart bar is low: Taiwan's Health & Fitness Top Free sits around #30, and a few extra ratings a day (behind that, roughly tens to a hundred-plus downloads, estimate unverified) is enough to get on it. The ranking reflects being seen, not scale.
- Traditional Chinese localization + high ratings: the title, copy and blog are all in Traditional Chinese, and a 4.98-star rating with daily updates makes the store page look credible. Reviews do point out mainland-China wording ("西蘭菜").
- Heavy retention and referral design: friends, groups, leaderboards, avatar customization, invite-for-Pro, and share cards were rolled out over the first 3 weeks after launch. It is following a "social app" playbook, aiming to improve retention and acquire new users while picking up some subscription revenue (Top Grossing 104–184).
6. Differentiation
- The official site is clear about its positioning: "Not the diet app with the most numbers, but the one that is most honest about numbers and most gentle with people." Concretely: it shows only four numbers, labels error ranges, recalculates a whole meal in one sentence, doesn't reward eating less, shares only meals you choose, and has an AI companion named Nanami. It also commits to ongoing evaluation of frontier models released in the past six months, so it isn't locked to one model.
- There is a self-contradiction: the site says "no public leaderboard", yet the changelog reads 1.0.11 "step leaderboard changed to public" and 1.0.17 "leaderboard fully redesigned … medal rankings added", plus a "country/region ranking". The product is in fact moving toward gamification and community.
- Is differentiation why it charted? Not so far. Users most likely found it by searching "calorie counting" and didn't know about Nanami or "honest estimates" when they arrived; reviews praise "convenient" and "free", and nobody mentions companionship or honesty. For differentiation to matter, the social referral would need to drive visible growth first, and current data (0–11 ratings a day) doesn't show that yet.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue is not public, and there is no coverage from media, X or Threads. It is still "largely unknown".
- No product copying it specifically was found. The category itself gets new AI calorie apps every week (e.g. Cality 2026-09, calai calorie counter 2026-09, 元氣餐桌 2026-11), but they are competing with Cal AI, not with Nometer.
8. What to borrow
- AI tools for smaller language markets or Chinese-speaking regions: write the title in the exact words locals search, pair it with a "local app comparison" SEO article that puts you on the same table as the big brands, and capture long-tail brand searches for very little spend.
- "One-sentence correction, full-meal recalculation" is smoother than making users edit numbers item by item, and it is an interaction you can copy directly.
- Hook into the iOS Visual Intelligence entry point (any image can be logged with Nometer), turning a system-level AI from competitor into distribution channel.
- Setting the invite condition as "friend completes their first analysis" before rewarding helps prevent fraud and ensures invitees actually use the app.
9. Still uncertain
- Real downloads and revenue (the charts only show that there is some); whether they are spending on Apple Search Ads.
- Of the 59 ratings, how many come from the team, friends and seed users (one review is in Simplified Chinese, and the development team has a Chinese background).
- Real activity levels of the social features, and whether the Taiwan performance can be repeated once the Android version and Japan/Korea markets launch (Japan and Korea share one discovery section, suggesting that user base is still very small there).
- Who is behind the company and the ConchTalk team, and whether it has raised funding (only registration information was found).
