CleanStatus is a small tool from an independent Nigerian developer, launched by September, that fixes WhatsApp Status videos getting crushed. At best it reached #36 on Nigeria's App Store Utilities Top Free chart, but it hasn't really broken out: the money in this category was already taken by PureStatus, launched 2022 years earlier, and from 7 to September at least 6 clones poured in, CleanStatus among them. This piece explains where the money in this business is, why clones only get a sliver, and whether there's still an opening in another market.

### "Now I have to pay to post a clear status?"

In Oct 8, Nigerian TikTok user @withadejoke posted a rant: "Nawa oh, now even posting a clear video on WhatsApp costs money?" It drew 14k views. In Oct 23, another Nigerian account wrote "Pure status my ass I'm done"; in Nov 1, someone wrote: "At this point even posting a status has become a financial burden."

They were complaining about PureStatus. WhatsApp recompresses every Status, and there's no switch to turn that off, so a clear video shot on your phone turns to mush by the time your friends see it. In Nigeria, Status is the social feed, and many small businesses sell through it. So someone built an app solving just this one thing and charged weekly for it.

CleanStatus was built to capitalize on those complaints.

### What it is

The developer, Tolúlopé Adéníyì, goes by @tolutronics on X. He is a mobile developer working with Flutter / Ionic / Capacitor and is also building an AI product for churches. CleanStatus launched on iOS in Sep 21, with an Android version as well.

Three steps: pick a video from your gallery → tap Prepare, and the server scales it to the size Status actually uses (1080×1920 canvas, 720p cap), then sharpens it and splits long videos into 30-second segments → the result is sent back to your own WhatsApp chat, and you manually forward it to "My Status".

The third step is the key. The official site is blunt about it: "No app can post a status for you, WhatsApp doesn't provide that API." Forwarding reuses the file already on WhatsApp's servers, so it isn't compressed again.

This method wasn't invented by them. PureStatus has done it since 2022, and its contemporary copies HD Status and HDme do the same. Even the site copy is nearly identical: "lands in your own chat… then forward."

Compare new Nigerian ratings in the same week and it's clear: PureStatus +183, second place Clear Status +105, CleanStatus +15. Its contemporaries HD Status +12 and HDme +15 are nearly the same.

Uganda's #200 on Utilities Top Grossing sounds like real revenue, but the bar for small-country category charts is low, a few sales can get you there (inference).

### Who holds the money: PureStatus

The business is real and already proven. The money just sits with the leader.

PureStatus (DamTech Designs) **ranks #30 on the Nigeria App Store overall Top Grossing** 11-06, not just its category chart. It's #7 on Utilities Top Grossing, #22 overall in Tanzania, #27 in Uganda, and in the top 100 in Malaysia and Sri Lanka too. Nigeria alone has 36.5K ratings, 8.75M installs on Google Play, and 36K more last week.

Its prices in Nigeria are: weekly ₦3,200, monthly ₦4,900, yearly ₦49,900, plus packs of compression credits and AI holiday-portrait tokens.

Second-place Clear Status launched 2023 years ago. In Nigeria it has 912 ratings, ranks #7 on Utilities Top Free, and 725K installs on Play.

In other words: iPhone users in West and East Africa will pay weekly for "no blurry status," and PureStatus has already proven that for everyone.

### Why a crowd of copies appeared

Proven demand, a simple method, and an expensive, widely criticized leader. Those three things together meant Nigerian developers piled in this summer:

There's also a TikTok account, @kxsplash, which posted in Oct 10 promoting its version: "No PureStatus-style watermark, 100% free for everyone," with 16.7K views. Meanwhile Indonesian TikTok is full of cracked versions of PureStatus and Clear Status, each video getting thousands to 60K views. Free tutorials are even more common: @akampatikk in Uganda has a "how to send your status at max quality" video with 340K views.

So CleanStatus faces: one leader taking most of the market, a pile of near-identical copies, a wave of cracked versions, and a stream of videos teaching people to get around it for free.

### How CleanStatus competes

It competes on price. In the Nigeria store the monthly plan is ₦3,000 (PureStatus ₦4,900), weekly ₦2,000 (₦3,200), yearly ₦25,000 (₦49,900), roughly 40% cheaper. The Nov 5 1.0.7 version added per-clip buying: ₦200 for 3 clips, ₦500 for 10 clips. For someone who finds subscriptions too expensive and only wants to post an occasional clear video, ₦200 is much easier to accept than a weekly subscription.

The free tier is generous too: 1 clips a day, up to 60 seconds each, with exactly the same quality processing as the paid version. The only catch is a small watermark in the bottom-right corner, and no sign-up required. The watermark is itself an ad: every status you post is greeting your friends for it.

The developer also iterates fast: 8 versions in the first 6 weeks. By day three they raised the per-clip length from 30 to 90 seconds, and by day five they added batch processing.

But it has weak spots. The "scale first, then sharpen" method it claims has been PureStatus's approach for a long time, so it's no real technical edge. The only negative review on the store page reads: "Video still looks blurry, you could do better." For a product whose selling point is quality, being called blurry is a serious problem.

### Where users come from

Mainly **store search** (inference). The app name "CleanStatus - Sharp Status HD" stuffs in Status, HD, and Sharp, competing for the same search terms as PureStatus, Clear Status, and HD Status. Its user spread (Nigeria > Uganda > Tanzania) matches PureStatus's strongholds exactly, suggesting it's siphoning from the same demand pool.

Searching TikTok for its name and developer account turned up no promo videos. The developer's X homepage hasn't mentioned it recently. Apart from auto-indexed download sites like APKPure and Softonic, there's no coverage. Whether it runs Meta or TikTok ads: not verified.

What's left is the watermark and word of mouth. When replying to reviews on Google Play, the developer adds a line asking people to "recommend it to your friends."

### If it were you

**Bottom line** : Building another PureStatus copy in Nigeria isn't worth it. What this category really teaches is the approach: find the side effects of a big platform's forced compression and limits, and build a single-purpose paid mini-tool around them.

**Who it suits** : solo indie developers who can ship both iOS and Android (Capacitor or Flutter both work), who know a market where WhatsApp is the main social tool, and who can do store keywords and TikTok short videos.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to beat PureStatus with "better quality." The mechanism is easy to copy, ordinary users can't see the quality difference, and CleanStatus itself is already being called "still blurry."

**How to do it:**

- First check the App Store Top Grossing charts in your target country to see where PureStatus and Clear Status rank. A high ranking means people are willing to pay and the market isn't yet flooded with copies, so prioritize countries like that. Nigeria is already saturated. Spanish-speaking Latin America is worth investigating: Spanish TikTok videos on "how to stop WhatsApp statuses from looking blurry" routinely hit hundreds of thousands of views (Colombia's @andyinventor has one with 920K views, 8-02).

- Price at 40% off the leader's rate, and add the ₦200 per-clip pack to catch the people on TikTok who complain about subscriptions and go looking for cracked versions.

- Don't discount the free tier's quality. Limit the quantity, add the watermark, and let users' statuses do the spreading for you.

- Local-language TikTok is the main battleground. Film direct side-by-side comparisons, "left is posted directly, right is processed first," and ride the momentum of those complaint videos.

**How to acquire users** : store keywords (Status, HD, Blur, and "not blurry" in the local language), TikTok comparison videos, and the watermark on the free tier.

**When to move** : the sooner the better. Nigeria saw 6 copies pour in from July to September alone. Other markets will be found by the same developers too; it's only a matter of time.

**What would mean you've got it wrong** : WhatsApp changes its status compression, or adds a real HD toggle in the app; or after a month live, your new ratings in the target country are less than a tenth of the leader's. That's where CleanStatus is now, and it would mean you're just splitting scraps. Time to stop.

Newcomers can tap this search traffic directly.

2. **About 40% cheaper than PureStatus, plus small credit packs** : monthly ₦3,000 (PureStatus ₦4,900), weekly ₦2,000 (₦3,200), yearly ₦25,000 (₦49,900); 11-05 also added ₦200 for 3 videos and ₦500 for 10 videos as per-video packs (App Store ng page). - Use Capacitor / cloud builds to ship iOS and Android together, so one person can iterate quickly.
