# ¥440 one-time-purchase film camera: an app from an influencer marketing company that sells "no subscription"

**What it is** A phone camera app that, like a real film camera, lets you choose body, lens, and film. 100 film stocks, a one-time purchase of a few dollars, no subscription.

**Why it took off** In a retro camera category where everyone sells subscriptions, it sold once and users praised it for that. Its parent company's core business is influencer experience teams; it first built word of mouth in Korea (inferred), then started Instagram ads at 11-03 while testing prices, and expanded overseas.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another viewfinder. Build the one-time-purchase version that does what it lacks: importing existing photos and batch-applying film looks. Pick a language market where the paid camera charts are still empty, first build reviews with small creators, then spend a small amount on Instagram with before-and-after comparisons while testing price.

C grade: the category is crowded and the price point is low. Chromagraph, which also sells once, is pricier and sells more. ROLLIE'S itself probably makes only a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, and its cold start relied on the parent company's experience team. The play is worth learning from, but copying it isn't worth the effort.

ROLLIE'S is a retro film camera made by a Korean influencer marketing company: pick a body, pick a lens, load a roll, 100 film stocks, one-time purchase, no subscription. In early November it expanded from Korea to Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe and the US. The growth is real, but the pool is small, and a competitor grew faster at the same time. The play is worth learning from; copying it is less worthwhile.

### A review that says "this app is crazy"

On 2026 Oct 2, the first reviews for ROLLIE'S showed up on the Korean App Store. One is titled 「이 앱 미쳤네요...」 ("This app is insane..."): "I recently got into cameras and have been looking everywhere, but the prices are a burden... This app lets you browse and compare all kinds of cameras, lenses and film. Great. Hope the developer does really well 👍". Two more came the same day: one says "Lots of bodies, lenses and film, and mixing them is fun", and another suggests "a guide with recommended combos for beginners".

A month later, on Nov 3, a different kind of review appeared in the Japan store: 「広告で気になって、何回か検討したのち購入!」 (Saw the ad, got curious, hesitated a few times, then bought it!).

These two reviews mark the two phases of this app: first build word of mouth in Korea, then buy traffic overseas.

### What it is

A camera app whose store page opens with "A little camera shop in your pocket." No sliders, no preset lists. You "shop for gear" like real film: pick a body (sets the color), swap in a lens (28mm wide-angle, tilt-shift, etc.), load a roll of film. The three layers stack and you see them live in the viewfinder; the shutter gives you the final shot. Each roll is 36 frames, and you can switch film freely.

One-time purchase: US $6.99, Korea ₩3,900, Japan ¥440 (App Store, 11-06). No ads, no subscription, no in-app purchases, 12 languages. iOS released 2026-09-10, Android launched 10-01.

The developer is 마야크루 (MAYACREW), based in Mapo, Seoul, with about 20 people. Its core business isn't apps. It runs 「슈퍼멤버스」 (Super Members), a creator-experience troupe platform that claims about 200k creator members (per company profiles on THE VC and Venture Square).

### How big it got

Small volume, but growing every day.

Source: App Store chart positions and ratings by store, 10-28 to 11-06.

As of 11-06, it ranked #2 in the Photo & Video paid category in Canada, Japan, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Vietnam, Italy and Spain, and #3 in the US. The paid category has a low bar, so #2 doesn't mean lots of sales, but charting itself brings exposure.

The more telling part is the trend: **home market falling, new markets rising** . Korea's overall Top Paid went from #5 at 10-28 to #28 at 11-06, and Japan went from #11 to #25. Thailand (#7 at 11-04), Indonesia (#10), Vietnam (#16), Canada (#18) and the US (#51–58) only started charting after 10-31. US rating was 0 before 11-01 and is now 25.

Android is smaller: 2,857 installs, +2,001 in the last 7 days (Google Play, 11-06).

How much money? Roughly estimated from rating counts and typical paid-app ratios, iOS has likely sold several thousand copies, for revenue somewhere between several thousand and $10–20K (estimate, not verified).

### Where users come from

**Korea: looks a lot like a experience troupe.** As of 10-28, the Korean store had 24 ratings but about 23 written reviews. Normal apps don't get that many people writing text. The reviews arrived in batches on 10-02, 10-07/08, 10-20 and 10-23, with a uniform tone: 「개발자님 대박나세요」 (Hope the developer hits it big), 「주변사람들한테도 추천해주고싶어요」 (Want to recommend it to people around me), 「현직 스냅사진작가인데 이거 뭔가요??」 (I'm a working snapshot photographer, what is this??). Korea averages 4.76 stars, Japan only 4.22. Add that the parent company already runs an experience troupe, and these are most likely planted endorsements (inference; I haven't found a recruitment post).

Store prices move too: Korea ₩2,900,10-31 at 10-28, raised to ₩6,900,11-01, settling at ₩3,900; Japan ¥300 → ¥700 → ¥440. The US has stayed at $6.99. They're using ads and store prices together to find the most profitable price point.

**Own social: almost no traction.** The TikTok account rollies_cam posts sample shots with the caption "no film, no lab fees, still got the grain," with only a few hundred views per post (TikTok, 11-06). No press coverage, no major creator reviews, no Apple feature found.

### What buyers actually like

The most praised thing in reviews isn't the filters. It's the **one-time purchase** :

- 「한 번 사면 평생 무료라 더 좋네요」: Buy once and it's free for life, even better (Korea, 10-07)

- 「One time purchase. At last, someone did it, thanks.」 (Turkey, 11-03)

- 「The best part though is the one off price, no hidden extras, no subs」 (UK, 11-04)

In the retro-camera category, the leaders Dazz Cam and NOMO CAM are free downloads with subscriptions or in-app purchases. Selling a one-time unlock in a category where everyone charges subscriptions makes it a selling point users bring up on their own.

Second is the "gear shopping" mechanic: 「카메라, 렌즈, 필름을 직접 조합할 수 있어서 단순한 필터 앱보다 다양하게」 (You can combine bodies, lenses and film yourself, more variety than a plain filter app), 「色々見てきたフィルムカメラアプリの中で1番使いやすい」 (the most usable of the film camera apps I've tried).

The complaints are also concentrated. A follower should note them:

- **Can't import existing photos** , the most requested feature, in both Korea and Japan. People say "give five stars if you can import."

- **Video is broken** : on iPhone 18 Pro it crashes as soon as recording starts, or records with no sound.

- **Overheating** , the phone gets hot even in the background.

- **Portrait only** , users in the US and Japan want landscape.

- After updating to 1.0.25, some found the Tilt Shift and Sweet Spot 50 lenses gone.

- A Japanese user said they sent feedback and got no reply, and there's not even a settings page.

The team fixes things quickly, shipping 3 versions from 10-28 to 11-03, but most of the issues above were still there by 11-06.

### Who it's competing with

This is a very crowded category.

| Competitors | Situation (11-06) | Compared with ROLLIE'S |
|---|---|---|
| Chromagraph Camera | Listed on 10-20, US $12.99 one-time purchase; 405 ratings across all stores, +403,80 in the last 7 days, Top 50 overall Top Paid in several stores, #1 in US and Japan Photo & Video paid | Same kind of thing, listed a month later, growing faster and charging more |
| BerryFilm | Korea, listed 2025-02, 4,944 ratings, #1 in the Korean paid camera category | Korean selfie filter, developer has 600k followers of their own |
| Dazz Cam, NOMO CAM, 1998 Cam, Huji | Tens of thousands to millions of ratings | Free plus subscription or in-app purchases, one virtual camera per effect |
| Hipstamatic Classic | Listed in 2009 | The originator of the "lens + film" combo; ROLLIE'S gameplay is closest to it |
| 2AM CAM, Oldi, GIKA, filmhwa, FILCA | A few hundred to 15k ratings | Peers on the Korean paid camera chart; most are single-style or creator-IP apps |
| The iPhone's built-in photo styles | Free | No film skeuomorphism or gear combos, but plenty of people find it "good enough" |

The key is the first row. ROLLIE'S two selling points, the one-time purchase and the combinable gear, Chromagraph also has, and it sells more at nearly double the price. So product differences only explain why some people are willing to buy, not why it's this one. Its rise owes more to a parent company that is good at seeding endorsements and buying ads, plus a whole category of "retro film paid cameras" that is growing (a batch of new apps charted alongside it on the paid camera chart).

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** You can learn from it, but copying it isn't worth it. The category is crowded, the price per customer is low, and stronger one-time-purchase rivals already exist. The app itself likely makes only a few thousand to $10–20K a month (estimate).

**Who it fits:** teams that already have a photo or filter app, charge subscriptions, and want to add a "one-time purchase" tier; or people with their own creator audience who can seed endorsements cheaply.

**Who it doesn't fit:** indie devs starting from scratch to build "yet another film camera." You'd face the free Dazz, the stronger Chromagraph and the iPhone's built-in styles at once, and you won't have a troupe like 마야크루's to draw on.

**How to do it (if you must):** Don't build the hundredth viewfinder. Build the piece nobody has done well: **import existing photos and batch-apply film** , one-time purchase, landscape and portrait both, no video at first. That's what the most reviews in both countries ask for, and ROLLIE'S still hasn't added it as of 11-06. On language, pick a market where the paid camera chart is still empty, and don't head-on Korea, Japan or the US.

**How to get users:** Follow its order: first find 20–30 micro-creators or real users in one home market to get the first batch of written reviews and ratings, then run small Instagram ads. Use before-and-after shots like "all of these were shot on a phone?", run the same creative at two or three prices, see which price converts best within a week, and change the store price accordingly.

**When the window is:** while this wave of retro film paid cameras is still growing, which means before spring 2027. After the year-end holiday season, if similar apps keep multiplying on the paid camera chart, the window gets smaller.

**What would mean you got it wrong:** ① ROLLIE'S keeps climbing the overall Top Paid in the US and Southeast Asia, with daily new ratings steady above 50, which would mean a one-time-purchase camera at this scale can scale with ads, better than estimated here. ② Conversely, if December its live Meta ads stop and it drops off charts in each store, that means low one-time prices can't cover ad spend, and even the marketing firm didn't run the numbers. ③ If Chromagraph or Dazz adds "import photos + one-time purchase" first, this gap closes.

## 롤리즈 / ROLLIE'S: 35mm Film Camera: why it's taking off

> App Store id 6805318319 · Developer MAYACREW Inc. (Mapo, Seoul, about 20 staff; core business is the creator experience-group platform 슈퍼멤버스) · Photo & Video · launched 2026-09-10 · one-time purchase (US $6.99, Korea ₩3,900, Japan ¥440) · no ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases · 12 languages · Android version com.mayacrew.rolliescam (2026-10-01). Data as of 2026-11-06. Store data comes from the agent-im appstore library (about 9 days since 2026-10-28); other sources are cited in the text.

### Bottom line

A one-time-purchase retro film camera app from a Korean creator-marketing company. The pitch is a combined viewfinder where you pick a body, a lens, and load film, with 100 films, all unlocked with one purchase. Early growth came from Korea (early reviews look like seeding or experience-group posts). Starting 11-03, it began running Meta (Instagram) ads while testing prices, then expanded to Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe/US. Volume is small: only 156 ratings across all stores, but the growth is real and it ranks well in its paid category. It has not beaten Chromagraph Camera over the same period; it is just a second-tier player in the one-time-purchase film camera wave.

### 1. Data (appstore library)

- Ratings across all stores: 10-28 is 35,11-06 is 156; in the last 7 days +103, with daily additions rising from 7 to 20 (daily_all_countries).

- Charted countries: 10-28 has 11, 11-04 has 20, 11-05 has 21, 11-06 has 19. In the Photo & Video paid category it ranks #2 in Canada, Japan, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Vietnam, Italy, and Spain, and #3 in the US.

- **Home market falling, new markets rising** : Korea Top Paid overall went #10-28 to #5,11-06 to #28; Japan #10-28 to #11,11-06 to #25. Thailand (11-04 #7), Indonesia (#10), Vietnam (#16), Canada (11-06 #18), and the US (#51–58) first charted after 10-31.

- Rating distribution: Korea 58 (average 4.76), Japan 49 (4.22), US 25 (4.6), and other countries are single digits. US ratings were 0 before 11-01 and 25 afterward.

- **Price testing** : Korea ₩10-28 ₩2,900,10-31 starting at ₩6,900,11-01 ₩3,900; Japan ¥300 → ¥700 → ¥440; the US has stayed at $6.99 (app_snapshot). Meta ad copy also ran three Korean won price points, 2,900, 3,900, 6,900 (see section 3).

- Updates are frequent: 1.0.20 (10-28) to 1.0.25 (11-03), 3 versions a week.

- Google Play: 2,857 installs, 7 days +2,001,375 ratings, best paid Photography category rank #1 (UAE) (googleplay library).

- Inferred: a rough estimate from the ratings-to-purchases ratio of paid apps puts cumulative iOS purchases at a few thousand, with revenue in the low-thousands to ~$10–20K range. Not verified.

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Platform | Launched | Scale (appstore library, 2026-11-06) | How it differs from ROLLIE'S |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chromagraph Camera | iOS | 2026-10-20 | 405 ratings, 7 days +403, top 50 overall Top Paid in 80 stores including US, Japan, Korea; #1 in Photo & Video paid in the US and Japan | The strongest in its same category (one-time-purchase film cameras), growing faster with broader reach |
| BerryFilm (Korea, Seungyun Kim) | iOS | 2025-02 | 4,944 ratings, 7 days +185; #1 in Korea's paid category | Focused on Korean-style selfie filters; the developer claims 600k followers, riding creator traffic |
| 2AM CAM, Oldi, YoungPhoto, GIKA, iY2K, filmhwa | iOS | 2022–2026 | Tens of thousands to 15k ratings | Similar apps on the Korean Top Paid camera chart, mostly single-style filters or built around one creator's IP |
| Dazz Cam | iOS / Android | 2018 | 1.18M ratings in a single store | The top retro camera, free with subscriptions; virtual cameras, but a subscription is required |
| NOMO CAM, OldRoll, 1998 Cam, Kapi, ProCCD, Fomz, Huji | iOS / Android | 2017–2022 | Tens of thousands to millions of ratings | Free with in-app purchases or subscriptions, sold as "one camera, one effect" |
| Hipstamatic Classic | iOS | 2009 | 17k ratings | The originator of the "lens + film + flash" combo mechanic; ROLLIE'S's combined interaction is closest to it |
| FILCA, the Analog series, Rarevision VHS | iOS | 2015–2018 | Thousands to 15k ratings | Long-standing one-time-purchase film camera |
| Built-in iPhone camera styles and filters | Big-company features | — | — | Free, but no film skeuomorphism or live viewfinder preview |

Verdict: this is a **crowded** category, with free-plus-subscription Dazz and NOMO at the top. ROLLIE'S takes the one-time-purchase, no-subscription route that has grown more common in the past two years; Chromagraph, a peer, is stronger.

### 3. How users came in (growth levers)

1. **Meta / Instagram ads (confirmed)** : searching the Facebook Ad Library (keyword "롤리즈", 2026-11-06) shows the "Rollie's" Page and the Instagram account rollies_cam with at least 17 live ads, starting 2026-11-03 / 11-04, most marked "Low impression count / <100 impressions" (just started). Example copy: "All these photos taken on a phone? 📸 … ROLLIE'S | 100 films, 2,900 won for lifetime ownership". The same creative runs three prices, matching the store price changes, which suggests price A/B testing. A Japanese review says "saw it in an ad … bought" (11-03), suggesting Japan ran ads earlier (exact dates unverified). metaads and tiktokads libraries did not track it (not on the list).

2. **Early Korean seeding or experience-group campaign (inferred, moderate evidence)** : Korean reviews start on 10-02; by 10-28 there were about 23 written reviews, while Korea had only 24 ratings in total. Normal apps write far fewer text reviews than that, and these clustered over a few days (10-02, 10-07/08, 10-20, 10-23), with highly consistent tone ("개발자님 대박나세요", "주변사람들한테도 추천", "현직 스냅사진작가인데"). The developer MAYACREW's core business is 슈퍼멤버스, an experience-group platform with about 200k creator/blogger members (THE VC, Venture Square), so seeding and experience groups are its home turf. Korean reviews average 4.65, versus 3.27 in Japan where organic traffic is higher, which also supports this. No experience-group recruitment post was found (unverified).

3. **Owned social (confirmed, small volume)** : the TikTok account rollies_cam posts sample work ("no film, no lab fees, still got the grain"), with only about 300–600 views per post (TikHub, 2026-11-06). Ads also run from this Instagram account.

4. **Store category chart and multi-language (inferred)** : around 10-28, 12 languages were added; many stores' Photo & Video paid category ranks reached #2–3. Paid category thresholds are low, so charting itself brings exposure. Charted countries grew from 11 to 21, in the same week the ads and the multi-language launch went live.

5. **Not found** : no media coverage, major creator reviews, or Apple features were found; Product Hunt and X show no buzz (web search, 2026-11-06).

### 4. Why it's taking off (at its current scale)

- **The combo mechanic is genuinely appealing** : "swap body + swap lens + swap film", seeing the effect live in the viewfinder, with 100 films in total. Reviews repeatedly praise this, e.g. "more variety than simple filter apps" and "the 1 easiest to use among film camera apps I've tried".

- **One-time purchase, no subscription** : the most-praised point, e.g. "buy once, own it for life", "One time purchase / At last, someone did it", "Excellent Value… no subs". The category's top players all sell subscriptions, so the one-time purchase itself is the selling point.

- **Low price plus price testing** : Korea ₩2,900–3,900, Japan ¥300–440, a low barrier to entry while prices are still being tested.

- **The company brings marketing capability** : a creator-marketing company building an app, using seeding and experience groups (inferred) for cold start, then Meta ads to expand overseas.

- **It rides long-running demand for retro film / 감성 looks, and several new apps on the Top Paid camera chart are rising together (Chromagraph, 2AM CAM, Very Good Camera), so the whole category is moving, not just this one app.**

### 5. Differentiation, and whether it's really why it grew

There are two points of differentiation: (1) a combined "gear" interaction (body color science × lens traits × film, previewed live), close to Hipstamatic's old formula but with far more films and live effect previews in the viewfinder; (2) one-time purchase with everything included. The purchase is the reason most often cited in reviews, and the combo interaction decides whether users stay, so both matter. But neither is unique: Chromagraph, also a one-time-purchase film camera, started faster over the same period. So the differentiation explains why someone would buy, but **does not explain why this one** . Its growth comes more from the company's marketing capability (seeding plus ads) and the category rising. Its weaknesses are clear too: no importing existing photos (the most common complaint), video crashes or missing audio, overheating, landscape-orientation problems, and lenses disappearing after updates.

### 6. What others can learn

- In a subscription-dominated category, "one-time purchase, everything included" is something users praise on their own.

- Swapping parameter sliders for a "choose your gear" metaphor lowers the learning curve and makes the experience more fun.

- Build reviews and ratings at home first, then expand to Japan, Southeast Asia, and the West with multi-language and small Meta ad budgets, using the ad creatives to test price directly (₩2,900 / 3,900 / 6,900).

- Ship a few versions a week to fix the problems users raise in reviews.

### 7. Still unclear

- Early Korean reviews: were they written by experience-group members or employees? Only indirect evidence (abnormal review/rating ratios, uniform tone, the company's main business), no direct proof.

- 11-03 how much did it spend on ads in Japan / Korea before? The Meta Ad Library only shows the first screen of currently running ads.

- Can unit economics work once paid acquisition starts? 12–20 new ratings per day, local rank is falling, unclear if it can be sustained.

- Revenue is only a rough estimate; unclear whether there was an undisclosed testing period between the store launch 09-10 and 10-01 (Android launch).
