# A one-time purchase got it onto the charts: a one-person gold price app from a German small town, and the question it doesn't answer

**What it is** A gold and silver price app: it breaks down the gold price in your country into world price, taxes and import duties, and dealer markup, showing what you'd pay to buy and what you'd get selling, and it can compare 58 countries to show where it's cheapest.

**Why it took off** It hasn't really taken off yet: gold prices have swung wildly for 2026 years and search interest in gold prices has stayed high. The app just popped up one day on the Finance Top Paid chart in the Netherlands, a small storefront where one or two one-time purchases or annual subscriptions are enough to chart.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another gold price app. Instead, copy its angle: find a product where the "sticker price" and the "price you actually pay or receive" differ a lot and are hard for ordinary people to work out, break down the gap, keep the calculator free, charge for alerts and full data, add a one-time purchase tier, and do store search and landing pages in the local language.

C grade: gold price apps are a 2026-year red ocean (82 similar apps in the US store, 40 of them launched this year). Karat itself has only charted for one day on a small storefront, with 0 ratings, and hasn't proven real volume. What you can take away is the "break down the real price" angle; following it in gold prices alone isn't worth it. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Phillip Kracht from Schwerin, Germany built a gold price app called Karat. It doesn't report the world gold price; it tells you "in your country, what you'd actually pay at the counter and what you'd get back if you sold." In Nov 6, it reached #42 on the Netherlands App Store Finance Top Paid chart. But it has no ratings anywhere in the world, and only 10+ downloads on Google Play. This one chart appearance shows someone was willing to pay for it; it doesn't show the app is growing. What's worth studying is its angle, not its results.

### Nov 6, #42 on the Netherlands Finance Top Paid chart

Karat launched on the App Store in Sep 15, and the latest 1.0.92 version shipped in Oct 10. The Dutch storefront name is "Karat: Goudprijs," the US is "Karat: Your Gold Price," and the German is "Karat: Dein Goldpreis." On Nov 6 it first appeared on a chart: #42 on the Netherlands Finance Top Paid chart, with Bitcoin Ticker to its left at #41, SBC to its right at #43, and Stock Events at #44. As of this date, it has only charted in this one storefront, on this one day.

The Netherlands is a small storefront; the Finance Top Paid chart drops off past #40, so the bar is low and a day with one or two in-app purchases is enough to get on. Its pricing is €2.99 per month, €19.99 per year (new users get a 7-day free trial), and a €49.99 one-time purchase. The most likely scenario is that one or two people bought the annual plan or the lifetime purchase that day, or users who installed in October converted after the trial ended (inference).

Other numbers: the Netherlands, US, German and Belgian storefronts all show 0 ratings (App Store, 11-06); the Google Play page lists 10+ downloads (11-06). On X, no posts mentioning it turned up in the last 60 days, and there's no press coverage, Reddit discussion or Product Hunt launch.

### What it is: breaking down "your gold price"

The first line of the store description is in Dutch: "Bij het kopen ligt je prijs boven de wereldprijs, bij het verkopen krijg je minder dan de metaalwaarde." It means: when you buy, you pay more than the world price; when you sell, you get less than the metal's value.

The whole app explains the money lost in between:

- **How the price where you live is built up** : the world price, plus local VAT and import duties, plus the usual dealer markup. The website's 11-05 example is a German 24K gold bar and coin: world price €117.66 per gram, taxes and duties 0%, dealer markup 2%–6%, ending at €122.37 for you.

- **What you get selling** : enter weight and purity, and it gives the buyback price typically offered per category. Bars and coins are 95%–99% of metal value, gold jewelry 85%–95%; silver jewelry and silverware 70%–90%. The website's example: 10 grams of 18K gold jewelry, worth €883.36 that day, typically bought back for €751–839. A nearby note says "ask several dealers."

- **Which country's gold is cheapest** : 58 countries compared side by side. On the day the website showed, the UAE was cheapest at €120.02 per gram and Israel most expensive at €144.40, "a difference of €235 per 100 grams," which is aimed mostly at people traveling abroad.

- **Is it expensive or cheap right now** : based on the 200-day moving average, RSI and the 52-week range, it tells you whether the gold price is "clearly low" or "clearly high" at the moment.

The free version already includes the world price, your local price, the buyback calculator, and the cheapest/most expensive country comparison. Karat Plus sells alerts: notifications when the price is clearly low or high (the same signal fires at most once every 7 days, with no weekend pushes), when the single-day move exceeds 2%/3%/5%, a daily summary, and it unlocks the full price breakdown for all 58 countries and 2012 years of price history.

It also repeatedly stresses: no account sign-up, no ads, no user tracking, and servers hosted by Hetzner in Germany. The data sources are listed as spot markets, the European Central Bank and national tax tables, "checked quarterly." The app supports 39 languages; the website says 40.

### Who made it

The developer account name is Phillip Kracht; his LinkedIn lists "Founder, Nexxus Group, Schwerin." The Nexxus Group website lists five products: Karat (live), the children's picture-book app Loupe (launched in Nov 4), the privacy checklist Nightwatch (in testing), and the food inventory app Nutria and e-commerce shopping assistant Butler (both still alpha). The five products share one pitch: servers in Germany, no tracking, no passwords required. It looks like one person launching small apps one after another on the same brand and backend (inference).

### Why now: gold prices have been hot for a full year, and more people have been building gold price apps for a full year

The backdrop is gold. In January 2026, the gold price first broke $5,000 per ounce (NOS and Reuters, late January), peaked near $5,595 mid-year, and fell back to about $4,050 by Nov 6 (CNBC, 11-06). The same day, NPR's Planet Money ran a piece titled "Why gold prices are surprisingly low." Dutch media covered gold almost daily, and search interest for "goudprijs" (gold price) really was there.

More people started building gold price apps too. In the US store, 82 apps have names containing terms like gold price, gold tracker, gold rate or silver price; 40 of them launched in 2026, and 19 launched after July (App Store, 11-06). Opening Karat's Dutch store page, the similar apps Apple recommends under "Suggestions for you" are mostly new this year with 0 ratings:

| Competitors | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Compared with Karat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitco Gold Live! | 2019 | US 8,466 ratings, Netherlands 173 | Established market data plus news, doesn't break down local taxes and fees |
| Goudprijs & Zilverprijs Nu(Mobile Card Games & Travel Apps LLC) | 2025-06 | US 81 ratings, Netherlands 11; #2 on Mali's Finance Top Paid chart, and small storefronts such as Austria, Slovakia and Poland also charted | Basic price tracker plus calculator, spreading across many storefronts with multilingual titles |
| Gold Price Tracker: MetalFolio | 2026-02 | 0–3 ratings; #11 on Niger's Top Paid chart, #14 in Hungary | Holdings tracking plus prices |
| Dukat: Gold Price Tracker | 2026-10-15 | 0 ratings; #49 on Poland's Top Paid chart | A month after Karat, it also broke onto a small storefront chart |
| Goudprijs vandaag – Calculator | 2026-09-23 | 0 rating | Dutch-language name, launched 8 days after Karat, competing for the same search terms |
| Goud- & Zilverprijs Grafiek | 2026-09-09 | 0 rating | In Dutch, focused on charts and alerts |
| Harem Altın (Turkey) | 2012 | 390k ratings | Local gold price coverage for a single country, a market already dominated by major players |
| Sites such as goldprice.org, HollandGold and GoldRepublic | Years | Occupies the top of search results for "goudprijs" in the Netherlands | Free; the gold dealer posts its own buy and buyback prices |

This table shows two things. First, charting on a small country's finance Top Grossing is common in this category. MetalFolio and Dukat both have a 0 rating and have charted in some small store, and Karat's chart run this time isn't especially notable. Second, the only one I've seen that focuses on "local take-home price breakdown" and "multi-country price comparison" is Karat. Competitors mostly show world prices, charts and alerts.

### Where users come from

The only confirmed channel is App Store search. Each store's title was switched to the local-language "gold price" (Goudprijs / Dein Goldpreis / Your Gold Price), and the subtitle and description were translated too.

The site nexxuskarat.com has landing pages in 7+ languages, with live prices above the fold. But searching "Karat Goudprijs" puts Dutch gold dealers at the top, and its own Dutch page probably ranks around #7. I see no sign of paid ads: at this scale with zero ratings, it doesn't look like paid acquisition (inferred). There is Dutch "goudprijs" search traffic, but the gold dealer sites capture it, not Karat.

### Where the money comes from

All revenue comes from in-app purchases on Karat Plus, paid through the App Store and Google Play. The paywall is deliberate: checking prices and calculating buyback value are free, and you pay for "we watch it for you and tell you when to act"; for people who dislike subscriptions, there's a one-time purchase of €49.99 (US store $44.99). This may suit older Dutch and German people holding gold bars and coins (inferred). But there are no reviews yet that tell us what paying users are actually paying for.

Revenue is unknown. Given the threshold around #40 on the Dutch finance chart, it may have been just a sale or two on Nov 6 (estimate).

### If it were you

**C: worth learning from, not worth copying.** Gold price apps are a 2026-year red ocean; the US store alone charted 40 this year. Karat itself hasn't proven it has volume. The real takeaway is an angle: when everyone reports the "standard price," you answer "what will I actually pay, and what can I get back."

**Who it suits** : people who know the local price structure of one product well, such as those who understand import car taxes, luxury VAT refunds, fuel taxes, or used watch buyback prices; or people in a smaller-language market with strong gold culture but no local market-wide app, who can maintain tax rates and dealer markup data themselves.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone building another generic gold price app, where you'd be one more among 82 and could only chart in a small store by luck; and anyone targeting Turkey, the Gulf, or India, where there are already local apps with hundreds of thousands of ratings and free dealer sites.

**How to do it** : copy its structure, not its category. Find something where the "sticker price" and the "take-home price" differ a lot and ordinary people can't work out the gap. Break the gap into parts (taxes, duties, markups, buyback discounts), release the calculator for free, charge for alerts and full data, and add a one-time purchase tier. Reconcile the data every quarter and state sources clearly on the page, since that's why people trust you.

**How to get users** : start with store search, using the exact word locals search in the title, one language per store; then build a landing page per language with live numbers to target "XX price" searches. Small-country finance Top Grossing charts have low thresholds, and if you want charting visibility you can follow what Mobile Card Games & Travel Apps did and spread across many small stores. But be clear: charting only gets you seen, it doesn't bring steady volume.

**When to get in before the peak** : while gold price interest is still high. Gold has fallen about 27% from its mid-year high and the news is still chasing it; once prices flatten, search volume for "gold price" will fall too. If you build in a different category, this timing doesn't matter.

**What would show I got it wrong** : ① over the next few weeks Karat stays on the finance Top Grossing charts in the Dutch and German stores and its ratings start rising, showing that "breakdown of take-home price" alone can drive growth, and the grade should go up and it should be followed; ② conversely, if a month from now it's still at 0 ratings and off the charts, the angle doesn't earn volume in gold, and taking the idea is enough; ③ if gold dealers or comparison sites (e.g., HollandGold, 5prijzen.nl) ship free tools with tax breakdowns, the neutral-tool path narrows.

## Karat: Goudprijs (ios_6805845708): why it made it onto the charts

> The short answer: **it hasn't really broken out yet.** The chart appearance came from 2026-11-06, when it ranked #42 on the Dutch iOS finance Top Grossing chart, and only that day, only in that one store. The threshold around #40 on the Dutch finance Top Grossing is low; a few €19.99 annual subscriptions or one €49.99 one-time purchase is enough. It has 0 ratings across all stores, only 10+ downloads on Google Play, and no external discussion turns up in search. It's built by Nexxus Group, a one-person studio in Schwerin, Germany, and the product is polished: it explains "local gold price = world price + tax/duty + dealer markup" and covers 58 countries and 40 languages. But gold price apps have become a crowded pile in 2026 years, and its differentiator (splitting up the price) hasn't turned into visible growth yet.

### 1. Basics

- App: Karat: Goudprijs (US store name Karat: Your Gold Price, German store name Karat: Dein Goldpreis), id 6805845708, bundle `group.nexxus.karat`, launched 2026-09-15, latest version 1.0.92 (2026-10-10). Source: iTunes lookup nl/us/de, 2026-11-06.

- Developer: Phillip Kracht (App Store developer id 6788387914). He currently has 2 apps: Karat, and the children's picture book app "Loupe: Zoom-Bilderbuch ab 4", which just launched, as well as 2026-11-04. Source: iTunes lookup entity=software. LinkedIn lists "Founder at Nexxus Group, Institute for New Media, Schwerin" (de.linkedin.com/in/phillip-kracht). f6s has an AI app company record reading "Schwerin, Founded 2026, Raised from Phillip Kracht" (not verified to be the same company).

- Website: nexxuskarat.com (multilingual landing pages); the parent site nexxus.group also hosts Karat (live), Loupe (live), Nightwatch (privacy labels, in testing), Nutria (food inventory, alpha), and Butler (e-commerce AI shopping assistant, alpha). The shared pitch is "servers at Hetzner in Germany, no tracking, no ads, no password accounts." The card says "no website," which is wrong.

- Pricing: free tier + Karat Plus, €2.99/month, €19.99/year (7-day trial for new users), €49.99 one-time purchase (US store $44.99).

- Languages: the app supports 39 (appstore library app.languages); the website says 40.

### 2. Data: how much it actually "took off"

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Chart history | Only 2026-11-06, nl finance (6015) Top Grossing #42 | appstore library chart_rank (all stores, all dates) |
| app.seen_in | Only NL | appstore library app |
| Score | NL / US / DE / BE are all 0 | iTunes lookup 2026-11-06 |
| Google Play | 10+ downloads, includes in-app purchases, updated 2026-10-10 | play.google.com page |
| Same-day NL finance Top Grossing neighbors | #41 Bitcoin Ticker, #43 SBC, #44 Stock Events; on 10-30 the #42 spot was "Geld tracker: Orbit" | appstore library, chart_rank |

Takeaway:

- The Netherlands is a small store; past about #40 on the finance Top Grossing, the threshold is roughly "a few in-app purchases that day." Charting for one day only, the most likely case is that one or two users bought an annual subscription or the one-time purchase that day (or someone converted from the 7-day trial in 10). **That shows "people are willing to pay," but not "it's growing."**

- 0 ratings plus 10+ Play downloads means very small download volume; it hasn't entered any stage with real scale.

### 3. Competitors: gold price apps are a red ocean in 2026

In the appstore library's long tail, US-store apps with names containing gold price / gold & silver / gold tracker / gold rate / silver price number 82. **Of those, 40 launched in 2026, and 19 launched after July** (appstore library app + app_name, 2026-11-06). The driver is gold itself: 2026-01 first broke $5,000 (NOS, Reuters January 25–26), hit a mid-year high near $5,595 (EBC 2026-06), and 11-06 has since fallen back to around $4,050 (CNBC / Yahoo 2026-11-06; NPR Planet Money 11-06 ran a piece on why gold is oddly cheap).

The similar apps recommended under Karat's detail page, "Suggesties voor jou" (Apple's own nearest-neighbor picks, 2026-11-06), are almost all new this year with 0 ratings:

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Karat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kitco Gold Live! | iOS / Android | 2019 (Kitco has an older brand) | US store 8,466 ratings, NL 173 | Long-running market data and news sources, without breaking out local taxes and premiums |
| Gold Price Live(Gold Price Group) | iOS | 2010 | US store rating 63 | Pure price data plus charts |
| Goudprijs & Zilverprijs Nu / Gold & Silver Prices Live(Mobile Card Games & Travel Apps LLC) | iOS | 2025-06 | 81 US rating, 11 nl rating; charts in finance Top Grossing across many small stores, including ml (#2), sk, at, pl | Multilingual ASO covering many stores; the product is a standard price tracker plus calculator. It is a ready-made template for the "charting across many stores" play Karat wants |
| Gold Price Tracker: MetalFolio(EFEKAN EFE) | iOS | 2026-02 | 0–3 ratings; #11 Top Grossing in ne, #14 in hu | Holdings valuation plus price data |
| Dukat: Gold Price Tracker(SELCUK TUNCEL) | iOS | 2026-10-15 | 0 ratings; #49 Top Grossing in Poland | A similar app launched a month later, also breaking into small-store Top Grossing charts |
| Goudprijs vandaag – Calculator(Hayder Dheyaa Yahya) | iOS | 2026-09-23 | 0 rating | A Dutch-named calculator launched 8 days after Karat, going straight for the "goudprijs" search term |
| Goud- & Zilverprijs Grafiek(Gregory Portailler) | iOS | 2026-09-09 | 0 rating | Dutch ASO, focused on charts and alerts |
| Goldium / Goldlet / Gold Price – Spot & Portfolio / Fexi and others | iOS | 2026-04 to 08 | 0–1 ratings | Commoditized price tracking, alerts, and portfolios |
| GoldPriceOneMobile (element92 UG, Germany) | iOS | 2025-05 | 0–1 ratings; #34 Top Grossing in Slovenia | Another small German developer, doing alerts plus a calculator |
| Harem Altın / Döviz (Turkey) | iOS | 2012–2013 | Harem Altın 390k ratings | A Turkish local gold price market leader, showing that gold-heavy markets already have giants |
| Web: goldprice.org, HollandGold, GoldRepublic, xgoud.nl, 5prijzen.nl and others | Web | Years | Search results for "goudprijs" in the Netherlands are mostly taken by gold dealers and price-comparison sites | Gold dealer websites show buy and buyback prices for free |
| Gold dealer apps: GoldRepublic, iGold | iOS | Years | Has trading features | Lets you buy and sell directly; Karat only displays prices |

**Is anyone copying it:** I haven't found anyone copying the specific "tax / duty / merchant premium breakdown, 58-country price comparison" angle. The ones that have appeared are generic gold price apps, mostly launched before or around the same time, so they're riding the same wave, not following Karat.

### 4. Growth tactics: no external channels found

- Store search / ASO: **confirmed.** Titles are localized in every store (Goudprijs / Dein Goldpreis / Your Gold Price), across 38 to 40 languages, with subtitles and descriptions localized too. This is the only acquisition channel I can see.

- Website SEO: there are landing pages for nexxuskarat.com in 7+ languages, with live price samples. But when I search "Karat Goudprijs" on Jina and Exa, the top results are all Dutch gold dealers, and its /nl/ page only ranks around #7. Effect not verified.

- X: x-radar found 60 posts in the last 0 days searching "nexxuskarat" and "Karat gold app".

- Reddit / media / Product Hunt: Brave search for "nexxus karat" only returns its own site; no media coverage.

- Paid ads: our ad library only tracks listed products and didn't find it, but that doesn't mean it isn't advertising. Its scale (0 ratings) doesn't look like paid acquisition.

- Gold price news: **it's context, not a channel.** Gold has pulled back from its mid-year high, and Dutch media write about it daily (MarketScreener NL, NOS). Search demand for "goudprijs" is real, but gold dealer websites are capturing that traffic.

### 5. Why people might (possibly) pay

1. **The angle is different from the others:** they show world prices, while this answers "what will I actually pay at the counter, and what will I get when I sell?" World price + local VAT/duties + typical merchant premium (e.g. German gold bars 2–6%), with buyback prices split by bars, jewelry, and tableware (95–99% / 85–95% / 70–90%). That's a real need for people holding physical gold and silver and for anyone about to sell jewelry.

2. **58 country price comparison** , plus the use case of "check where gold is cheaper before you travel" (the official site's example: UAE is cheapest, Israel is most expensive, a 100-gram gap of €235).

3. **The paid hook is alerts:** the free version is already usable. Plus sells signal pushes (200-day moving average, RSI, year-range), large-move pushes, a daily digest, and a €49.99 one-time purchase, which suits European users who dislike subscriptions.

4. **Privacy positioning** (no account, no tracking, servers in Germany) may appeal to older physical-gold holders in German-speaking countries and the Netherlands.

These are product-level inferences. **No ratings, reviews, or ranking curve yet proves** that any of this drove payments.

### 6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out

- Differentiation: **"local net-price breakdown" plus a multi-country tax data table (checked quarterly)** . Most competitors show only world prices and charts, or cover a single country (Turkey, the Gulf).

- Is that the reason? **Can't tell yet** , because it hasn't really taken off. Its Dutch Top Grossing position on a given day could be just one or two one-time or annual purchases. The differentiation may lift conversion (a high share of visitors paying), but volume hasn't built up yet.

### 7. What others can learn

- A different angle in a red-ocean category: don't report world prices, answer "how much will I actually pay?" This kind of understandable local price breakdown can be carried over to other goods (fuel prices, car import tax, watches, luxury tax-refund prices).

- The bar for Top Grossing charts in small-country finance is low; one one-time purchase can chart. To get seen through "charting across many stores," you could copy Mobile Card Games & Travel Apps LLC: multilingual ASO plus subscriptions, spread across many small stores.

- Subscription plus a higher-priced one-time purchase tier suits European users who are anti-subscription.

- One person using one set of brand infrastructure (a unified website, passwordless accounts, German servers) to mass-produce small apps (the Nexxus Group already has 5 products) looks a lot like the "product matrix" approach of AI-assisted development.

### 8. Still unclear

- For the 11-06 chart appearance, I don't know whether it was one or several in-app purchases, or subscriptions versus one-time purchases. Whether it stays on the charts in the following days needs more checking.

- Whether they're running Apple Search Ads (bids on "goudprijs" in the Netherlands are cheap) can't be checked.

- Phillip Kracht's background, and whether "Nexxus Group Institute for New Media" is a registered company, are unverified.

- The accuracy of the 58-country tax rates and premium data (especially the range values for "merchant premium") is unverified.
