A university student brought Czech middle-school math exam papers to the iPad: Maťák hit #3 in Education in a small pool

What it is An iPad app for Czech ninth-graders preparing for the math entrance exam: write answers by hand on past exam papers and answer sheets, get auto-graded, see where you're weak and how many points you're short of your target school's cutoff.

Why it took off From June, the founder built a waitlist on Instagram with "comment for a link" posts; after launch he switched from paid early access to free plus subscription, just as the November exam-prep season began. The Czech Education chart has a low bar, and a dozen-odd ratings was enough to reach the top 3.

BHow you could follow Don't copy Czech directly. Take the same playbook of official past papers + handwritten answer sheets + auto-grading + weak-area diagnosis to Poland, Slovakia, Romania or other unified-exam countries nobody has covered yet, and acquire users through student-voiced short-video comment-for-link posts and class invites.

Grade B: the approach is clear and customer acquisition costs almost nothing, few people know about it, and there's room in other countries; but each country's pool is small, users churn after the exam, and the revenue looks thin, so whether it can make real money is unproven. Few people know about it yet

Jakub Kašpar, a student at Charles University in Prague, built an app that lets ninth-graders write directly on past entrance-exam papers and answer sheets with an Apple Pencil, then auto-grades them, shows where they went wrong and how far they are from their target school's cutoff. Launched in Sep 28, it reached #3 in the Czech App Store's free Education chart within a month. Volume is small, with 25 ratings in total; but moving a nationwide paper-and-pencil exam onto a tablet as-is can be repeated in another country.

A Reel that asks people to comment for the link

In 2026 Jun 11, before the app launched, Kuba (short for Jakub) posted a Reel on his Instagram ending with: "Napiš mi do komentáře "mataak.cz" a já ti pošlu odkaz!" ("Comment 'mataak.cz' and I'll send you the link!"). That post has 70 likes, and the comments are a row of identical "mataak.cz" replies. His bio says he's a Charles University student who self-funded a CERMAT practice app.

CERMAT is the Czech body that runs the standardized exams. Every April, ninth graders (9th grade) and 7th graders applying to multi-year academic secondary schools sit its math and Czech language tests. The math paper has 16 questions, 50 points and 70 minutes, and answers must be transferred to an answer sheet. In 2026, about 130k people applied to four-year secondary schools (iDNES, 2026-04).

From June to launch, over three months, he kept posting on Instagram about "how a student builds an app," and every post used "comment for a link" to collect people. In Oct 6, a post co-branded with a product account got 565 likes; in Oct 16, a Facebook post saying "Napiš do komentáře chci!" (comment "want") showed 5.7K views.

What it actually does

The store page leads with: "Write directly on the test and answer sheet with an Apple Pencil, just like the real exam." Then come auto-grading, hints for each question, step-by-step standard solutions, and animated step-by-step walkthroughs for compass-and-straightedge construction problems (the store page says "Ondra's specialty," Ondra being another co-founder).

Once you've completed 3 past-paper sets, the app draws a "knowledge map" of equations, geometry, word problems and so on, showing your weakest and strongest areas. It then converts your results into whether you clear the cutoff for your chosen school and program. The website puts it this way: "One wrong answer is chance. Wrong in the same spot across three papers? Maťák will point it out to you."

Every question comes from CERMAT's officially published past papers, and the website stresses "not made-up questions that merely look like entrance exams." In Nov 3, the 1.3.0 version even added a small triangle warning to questions that were dropped from the 2027 curriculum; CERMAT's own practice site doesn't do this.

User reviews say it best:

"I've never seen an app like this, and it's free. The only downside is it only works on iPad for now." Chaozzic, Czech App Store, 10-23
"Great stuff for 9th graders, all in one place 🫶" Natyseek_31,10-30
"All the past entrance exam papers are here." 10-31

Why it took off in late October

Store data (Czech store, 10-28 to 11-06) looks like this:

DateEducation free chartEducation Top GrossingOverall free chartCumulative ratings
10-2829––8
10-308––9
11-013102–11
11-033947714
11-0544717017
11-06959–24

Several things stacked up:

It charged first, then went free. Early on it sold only "Early access," 100 CZK (about $4) per pass, with artwork of Maťák holding a "golden ticket." It later became "Maťák je nově zdarma" (now free): all past papers, practice, the mistake log and stats are free, and Pro is 99 CZK/month or 690 CZK/year with a 3-day free trial. After going free, and after adding finger writing (so phones work too), the chart climbed starting from 10-30.

It landed at the start of exam season. Czech ninth-graders start drilling past papers systematically in November, and prep courses also start in November, running through April.

Class invites. 1.3.0 added a "rewards" page: invite 1, 4, 7, or 10 friends and get Pro for 1 week(s), 1 month(s), 2 month(s), or lifetime; the invitee has to complete their first question for it to count. Ninth-graders prep as a whole class, so the design fits well. 11-06 single-day new ratings of 7 is its best day so far, matching the update timing, but whether invites drove it is unverified. The same version also added a line at sign-up asking "How did you hear about Maťák?", so he is tracking channels.

The pool is tiny. This is the key thing to remember when reading this table. On 11-06, Maťák was #9 in the Czech free Education chart (24 ratings), #8 was a driving-test app (2,777), and #7 was Photomath (20,704). In Czech Education, a few dozen to a hundred-odd downloads a day (estimated) is enough for the top 10. So ranking #3 shows it has surfaced in this audience, not that it is big.

Creator accounts on TikTok that discuss CERMAT questions get tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of views per post, but searching "mataak" turns up none of its content. No press coverage, no one mentions it on X, and no paid acquisition is visible.

Where the money comes from, and how much

Pro sells "unlimited." The free tier gives only 2 solution steps and 2 hints a day. A 3-star review (cauahoj., 10-31) complains about exactly this: "Trying to correct a whole paper with two a day is just not enough." That is the paywall.

At best it reaches the education bestseller chart at 11-05, #47, and has never made the overall grossing chart. At Czech scale, that position might bring only a handful of subscriptions a day, a monthly revenue estimate in the low hundreds to a couple thousand dollars (inferred, unverified). His store description says: "Subscriptions aren't about making more money; they tell me this app is worth continuing. Every koruna goes back into development."

There's also a hard limit: the exam is in April, and once it's over these users have no reason to stay, so subscriptions drop off a cliff and the cycle starts over the next year.

Who it's competing with

CERMAT prep has plenty of tools; what's missing is this format:

CompetitorsFormHow Maťák differs
TAU (CERMAT's official site, live since 2023-10)Web, free, no sign-upThe same real papers, but it only gives answers and expects you to score open-ended items yourself; no explanations, no diagnosis, no handwriting, and no flag on questions removed from the new curriculum
To dáš! companion practice (2026-10)WebVideo explanations and wrong-answer follow-ups, only for students who bought the offline mock exams
prijimacky.appWebClosest idea: 300 full past papers, auto-checking, step-by-step hints; but keyboard input only, no weak-topic chart
Umíme matikuWebCommon in schools; the questions are self-written "exam-style" items, free version is capped
Tempo – přijímačky(2026-09-07)iOS / AndroidA few maths and Czech questions a day, no full papers; Czech store 0 ratings
Přijímačky s Mapou(2026-09-14)iOSShows parents the gap and cutoff scores, not a practice tool; 3 ratings

Several apps appeared the same autumn, so a lot of people spotted this need at once; but the combo of full past papers + handwriting on the answer sheet + auto-grading + weak-topic chart + school cutoff scores is, for now, only this one.

If it were you

B. This has already been taken in Czechia, and the pool is small, seasonal and the revenue looks thin. Copying it into Czechia makes no sense. What's worth building is the same thing for other countries: a nationwide paper-based entrance exam, official past papers published publicly, and no local app yet doing handwritten grading.

Who it suits: people whose native language is the target country's language, who took this exam themselves (or have a child sitting it), aged 1–2; who can do iPad handwriting input and question grading; who can tell a story on Instagram / TikTok with their own face. Kuba got traction partly because he was the "older brother" to these ninth graders.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone aiming at English or Chinese mainstream markets (gaokao and zhongkao question banks and grading apps are already packed); anyone counting on subscriptions for steady income (students churn after the exam, business runs only half the year); anyone unwilling to appear on camera.

How to build it: start by picking an exam. Candidates include Poland's 8th-grade exam (egzamin ósmoklasisty, roughly 400k test-takers per year (inferred), with past papers published by the exam center), Slovakia's Monitor, Romania's Evaluare Națională, and Hungary's központi felvételi. Before starting, search the App Store and Google Play in the relevant regional store for existing competitors (not checked). The product should follow Maťák's skeleton: official past papers laid out as-is → handwritten work on the paper and answer sheet → automatic grading → a weak-spot chart after 3 sets → conversion to the target school's cutoff score. Mark questions that "are no longer tested" against the latest syllabus. Give all past papers away for free, make "unlimited solution steps and hints" the subscription, and sell a one-time season pass for "until exam day," which fits this business better than a monthly subscription. Prioritize iPad, but support finger writing from day one, or you'll be capped at volume like Maťák, which is "iPad only."

How to get users: follow its funnel and it costs almost nothing. Two or three months before launch, start posting on Instagram / TikTok "I'm building an app to help you pass XX exam", ending each post with "comment XX and I'll DM you the link" to build a waitlist; sell cheap early-bird access first, then go free; after launch, add an in-app invite that unlocks Pro by number of referrals so classmates pull each other in. Small-language education charts have low barriers: a dozen ratings can get you near the top, and the chart itself is exposure.

Deadline: work backwards from the prep season. Most European entrance exams fall in 4–June, and students start drilling from autumn. The 2027 season has already started; if you can make it, launch before January to catch the second half of the season; if not, use this season to polish the product and build the waitlist, and launch before September 2027.

Where the math can go wrong: ① after Maťák's exam ended in April, its ratings and chart dropped to zero and never came back the next autumn, which means products like this hold no users, just a one-season business; ② its education top-grossing chart has stayed beyond rank 50 without climbing, meaning students will use it but not pay, so the money has to come from parents and the approach must change; ③ the country you picked already has a local app doing handwritten past-paper grading with over a hundred ratings, so the gap is gone.

Why Maťák (iOS 6806820171) broke out

A Czech maths entrance exam prep app (CERMAT unified entrance exam JPZ, for 9th grade / 7th grade entry to secondary school, multi-year academic gymnasium). On iPad, users handwrite with Apple Pencil directly on past-paper exam sheets and answer sheets, get auto-graded, see a weak-topic chart by subject, and get converted to target school cutoff scores. Developer Jakub Kašpar (a Charles University student); mataak.cz says "Kuba and Ondra, two people". Listed on 2026-09-28, current version 1.3.0 (2026-11-03).

Bottom line

A student developer built a native iPad app combining Czech entrance-exam past papers + the feel of paper testing (Apple Pencil writing on the exam sheet and answer sheet) + auto-grading and weak-topic diagnosis. Starting 2026 June, he posted publicly on Instagram about building it, and gathered a group waiting for release. Launch landed right as the November prep season began. Czech education free charts have a very low bar, so a dozen ratings was enough to reach the top 3. It "broke out" in a very small pool: 25 ratings in total, with revenue that looks small.

Bottom line: CERMAT prep is not an empty niche. There are official free tools, mock-exam companies and several web question banks. But among iOS apps, the only one doing full real past papers + handwriting on the actual test sheet and answer sheet + auto-grading + a weak-area map by curriculum + converting scores into target school cutoffs is Maťák. Tempo and Přijímačky s Mapou both launched that same month, which suggests several teams spotted the opportunity in autumn 2026, but their shapes are all different.

3. Where users come from (growth levers)

  1. Build-in-public on Instagram / Facebook, plus a "comment for the link" funnel (confirmed)
    • Personal account @kaspar.kuba bio: "Charles University student, self-funding a CERMAT practice app", co-posting Reels with the product account @mataak.cz.
    • Reel by 2026-06-11: "Napiš mi do komentáře "mataak.cz" a já ti pošlu odkaz!" (comment mataak.cz and I'll DM you the link), 70 likes, comment section full of "mataak.cz". A classic comment-triggered DM automation; they were building a waitlist for over 3 months before launch. Source: instagram.com/reel/DZcbKwJotz9
    • Reel by 2026-10-06: "Více o aplikaci na mým profilu" (more about the app on my profile), 565 likes; a commenter asked whether it's on Google Play, and that comment got 19 likes. Source: instagram.com/reel/DeJtT-1oyMq
    • Facebook Reel "Napiš do komentáře chci!" (comment "want"), 2026-10-16, page title shows 5.7K views. Product-page posts also say "iPad only for now, early access is open", "now works on phones too", "comment iOS or Android".
    • The play is the founder on camera, student tone, a "solo-built" story, using comments-for-links to drive engagement, then converting that into downloads.
  2. LinkedIn founder story (confirmed, small reach): a post by 2026-10-03 on how the CERMAT questions are written got 19 reactions; the personal profile has 134 followers. Impact mainly among parents and education people.
  3. Paid early access, then free (confirmed): early access sold for 100 Kč (the site called it a "golden ticket"), then switched to "Maťák je nově zdarma": core features free, Pro on subscription. The paid early access brought in cash and surfaced the core users; after going free, downloads dropped the barrier and the chart climbed clearly from 10-30.
  4. In-app invite referral (confirmed, live since 11-03 1.3.0): invite 1, 4, 7, or 10 friends and get 1 weeks, 1 months, 2 months, or lifetime Pro respectively; the invitee has to finish the first question to count. Students in the same 9th-grade class studying together for exams is a smart fit for this design. 11-06 logged 7 new ratings in a single day, a record, which lines up with this update in time, but causation is unverified.
  5. Sign-up question "How did you hear about Maťák?" (added by 1.3.0): shows the founder is doing channel attribution.
  6. Word of mouth and seasonality: reviews keep repeating "great stuff for 9th graders" and "all past exams in one place". Czech 9th graders start systematic prep in November; mock-test businesses also open classes in November, with exams in April. The launch timing landed right as prep season began.
  7. Channels not found: a TikTok search for "mataak" and "maťák cermat" turned up nothing from it. CERMAT prep is busy on TikTok (@hemi.sfera, @testedu243, @prijimackyvkapse and others get tens to hundreds of thousands of views per question-number video), but no collaboration with Maťák was seen. No discussion on X, no press coverage. Ad libraries don't track it; whether it runs Meta ads is unknown.

4. Why it made the list

  • Timing: App launched 2026-09-28, Instagram teasers from June. November is when 9th graders start grinding CERMAT past papers and mocks; from 10-30 to 11-04 the chart rose to #3 in free Education. The 2027 syllabus changed (cylinder volume and Thales' circle removed, etc.), the old banks didn't flag this, and Maťák marked "no longer examined" questions.
  • Product: the CERMAT exam is paper-based, with answers transcribed onto an answer sheet. to-das.cz has called "answer sheet, time, nerves" the three main causes of lost points, and web tools on a phone can't practise those. Maťák writes directly on the exam paper and answer sheet with Apple Pencil, the only electronic tool that mirrors the real exam flow; add auto-marking, a weak-area map and target school cut-offs, and "doing past papers" becomes "knowing where you're weak". A user review, "Takovou aplikaci jsem ještě ani neviděl" (I've never seen an app like this), says exactly that.
  • Distribution: the founder is a near-peer of the target user, collected a waitlist on Instagram with comments-for-links, told the indie-dev story; after launch, class-level invite referrals. No paid acquisition seen.
  • Small pool: a Czech free Education chart can reach the top 5 with only a dozen or two dozen ratings. It stands out in the data partly because the category bar is low.

5. Differentiation

  • The core difference is a realistic paper exam experience (iPad + Pencil writing on the exam paper and answer sheet) + auto-marking + curriculum-based weak-area diagnosis + target school cut-off conversion. The official TAU is free but rough; mock-test businesses come with explanations but are tied to offline classes and priced high; web question banks are all keyboard input.
  • Is this difference why it took off? Partly. It drives the reviews ("never seen anything like it", "all in one place") and the reason to pay. But it has a cost: at first it was iPad only, and reviews complained "iPad only". What really lifted downloads was several things stacking: going free, the phone version, prep season starting, and the Instagram funnel. The Pencil difference alone can't carry the volume; only some Czech 9th graders have an iPad and Pencil.

6. How many people see it

  • Still little known: no press coverage, no X discussion, no disclosed revenue (none on TrustMRR or in any revenue posts). Individual Instagram Reels get tens to 565 likes, LinkedIn has 134 followers. Big CERMAT TikTok accounts don't mention it.
  • Copycats: none seen copying it. Tempo – přijímačky (09-07) and Přijímačky s Mapou (09-14) appeared in the same autumn, and prijimacky.app came earlier, but they have different shapes and don't count as copies.

VII. What others can borrow

  1. Digitise a nationwide paper-based entrance exam as is: official past papers are public (ready question bank, low copyright risk), the exam flow (paper + answer sheet) is recreated with Pencil, then auto-marking and weak-area diagnosis added. The same model could transfer to: Slovakia's Monitor / unified entrance exams, Poland's egzamin ósmoklasisty, Hungary's központi felvételi, Romania's Evaluare Națională, Germany's state Abschlussprüfung, and China's zhongkao / primary-to-middle-school entrance past papers (handwritten marking).
  2. The category bar in small-language exam markets is low: a few dozen ratings can get you to the top of the Education chart, and store search and chart exposure cost almost nothing.
  3. The full stack of comment-for-link (Reels) + waitlist + paid early access → go free + subscription → class-based invite referral suits a student audience and costs almost nothing in ads.
  4. Marking "no longer examined" against the new syllabus patches a gap in the official tool.

8. What's still uncertain

  • Actual downloads and paying users: Apple doesn't disclose them. Revenue for Education top-grossing ranks 47 to 147 in Czechia may amount to only a few sales a day.
  • Google Play version data: the website says there's a Play version, but neither our googleplay library nor search found its install numbers.
  • Whether it runs Meta ads: the ad library doesn't track it.
  • Whether 11-06's single-day 7 ratings came from invite referrals, in-app review prompts, or seasonality: unverified.
  • Whether it can survive the off-season after the April exam (the topic is extremely seasonal).
  • Ondra's role in the "two-person team": the site says he handles the compass-and-straightedge animated explanations; the rest is unverified.
