> It jumped on a trend: Potto June's video with 29M views kicked off the category, and Chow September copied the selling point. It sells $40–60 annual subscriptions behind a hard paywall, and runs a row of TikTok accounts with a few dozen followers, posting daily. On the low-bar food Top Grossing chart, a handful of subscriptions put it around #50.

Chow: Meal Planner & Groceries · Flame Industries

# 48 ratings and it charted #49 in the US Food & Drink Top Grossing: Chow is a follower that showed up three months late, riding a paywall and a stack of TikTok sock puppets

**What it is** A subscription meal-planning app: tell it how many people you're feeding, what they won't eat, which grocery store you use and what you want to spend a week, and it gives you a week of dinners and a priced shopping list that you can push to Instacart in one tap.

**Why it took off** It rode someone else's wave: a 29M-view video from Potto in June kicked off the category, Chow copied the pitch in September, sold $40–60 annual subscriptions behind a hard paywall, and ran a stack of TikTok accounts with a few dozen followers each posting daily. On the low-bar Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, a handful of subscriptions was enough to sit around #50.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't rebuild the same thing in the US or UK. Pick a country outside the English-speaking world where the supermarket landscape is clear, get prices right for three to five big chains, and push it with a sock-puppet matrix of one account per persona that talks only about local stores and currency, aiming at the January new-year budgeting wave 2027.

Grade C: the category was crowded by July, the top tier adds thousands of ratings a week, and Chow itself adds only a few a week, so copying it doesn't find a spot. What's worth learning is the playbook: a low-barrier Top Grossing category, a hard paywall, and a sock-puppet matrix. It's only worth trying in a country that is still empty. Nobody knows about it yet

Chow is a subscription app that builds a week of dinners and a grocery list from your household size, dietary restrictions, preferred store and weekly budget. It launched in September 11, charted #6 in November 49 in the US App Store Food & Drink Top Grossing, and had only 48 ratings in the entire US. It didn't open this category: back in June a 29M-view video had already lit it up, and the top tier was in the category's top 5 before Chow arrived. What's worth watching in Chow isn't the product. It's how a small team holds a rank in a crowded category with very few users.

### An account with 40 followers

In October 31, a TikTok account called @prepwithtali posted a video with just one line of copy, "this app is amazing for budgets", tagged #chow #mealprep #FoodTok. It got 37k views. The account had 40 followers at the time, and over the next week it posted one or two videos almost every day with copy like "if you're a student with no money you need this", "who's been hiding this from me", "this is how I stick to my grocery budget". Views ranged from 250 to 3,300 (TikTok, 11-06).

At the same time, another account, @cookwithdami, focused on the UK: "can £40 actually buy a week of dinners for two", "what £30 gets you at Aldi", "I'm genuinely annoyed nobody told me". Each video carried a supermarket tag, with Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and ASDA rotating, all under #chowmealplanner. From November 3 to 5, it posted three videos a day, each getting between 650 and 750 views (TikTok, 11-06).

There were at least five or six accounts like this: @cookwithisa0 (early October, 5 followers), @mealswithmara_ (three posts a day), @chefwithsophie. All were new accounts with single- or low double-digit followers, reusing the same few hooks. They were Chow's main acquisition channel.

### What it is

When you open the app it asks a few questions first: how many people you're cooking for, what they can't eat, which grocery store you usually go to, and how much you want to spend in a week. Then it gives you a week of dinners and a list, which you can send to Instacart in one tap or share as a link, so family members can open it on the web without installing the app. The first line of the store description is well judged: "You tried a meal plan, kept it up for a week or two, then a late work night, a sick kid, or just Wednesday exhaustion broke it. The veggies went bad. Takeout won."

It has a hard paywall: the signup flow only shows the subscription page at the very end, and there's no free tier. Annual plans at $39.99, $49.99 and $59.99, a weekly plan at $9.99, and the annual plan comes with a 3-day trial (in-app purchases on the US store page).

It iterated fast: from September 14 to October 26 it shipped 7 versions, adding recipe import from TikTok and Instagram, prices per store for 9+ supermarkets, budget-based weekly planning, shared lists, Instacart, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Simplified Chinese, plus Latino community grocers like Sedano's and Fresco y Más.

### How a 48-rating app reached #49

Start with volume. The US has 48 ratings, and Oct 28 has 45 of them; in 10 days it only added 3. Worldwide it's just 49 (App Store, 11-06). Downloads are tiny.

Now the ranking. From October 28 to November 6, it bounced between #48 and #78 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart. In the UK it was around #100 in late October and rose to #6 in November 51; in Germany it hit #4 in November 56, and in Australia it reached #31 in October 63 (App Store charts). The UK climb lines up with when UK accounts like @cookwithdami started posting.

Put the two numbers together and the picture is that this chart has a low bar. Most Food & Drink apps are free recipe apps, few take payments, and a few $40–60 annual subscriptions a day is enough to hold around #50 (inference; I haven't verified how much money each chart position represents). Few people, but a fair share of them pay.

The cost shows up in the reviews. From 5 to 8 October, a batch of five-star reviews with all-caps titles came in: "AMAZING APP", "AMAZING TIME SAVER!", which lines up with the week the first TikTok account started posting. Later reviews turned sour: a one-star in October 28 said "looks free, makes you pick a bunch of stuff and sign up, then tells you it's a subscription at the end"; a one-star in November 3 said "gave me a free trial then charged me straight away, lol".

### Who lit up this category

On Jun 24, TikTok user @madimugc444 posted a video with the caption "wish I'd found this sooner 😫", tagged #budgetmeals #pottoapp. It has 29.3M views so far (TikTok, 11-06). Her other videos have only a few hundred views, and her bio tags include #contentcreator #prpackages, which suggests a paid UGC creator (inference). The app being promoted was Potto, a meal planning app that launched in Jun 12.

Over the next month, the same pitch, "pick a store + set a budget → weekly menu + priced list + paywall", showed up across a string of apps:

| Product | Launched | US rating / 7-day new ratings | Food & Drink Top Grossing rank (11-06) | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| mise (UK, TEGS LABS) | 6-10 | 4,566 / +506 | #3 | Started with UK supermarkets, tracks calories and leftovers; running TikTok ads |
| Potto | 6-12 | 2,360 / +24 | #8 | The spark, no signup required; growth has already slowed |
| Whipp | 6-12 | 711 / +176 | #6 | "Plan your week in a minute" |
| TapCook | 7-17 | 6,707 / +1,017 | #4 | Pitch nearly identical to Chow's, two months earlier, 140× Chow's volume, driven by creators (one video at 457k views) |
| NeatEat | 7-17 | 1,437 / +49 | #19 | Priced lists with creator promotion |
| Chow | 9-11 | 48 / +3 | #49 | Late; sock-puppet matrix + hard paywall |
| Vego, Bunlo, WeeknightBite, ChowWeek and others | 9–October | 0–140 | — | Not yet gaining traction; ChowWeek's name even sounds like Chow |

Source: App Store US storefront, 11-06. Older players sit above it: ReciMe (328k ratings, #1 in the category's Top Grossing), eMeals, Mealime, Samsung Food. They don't rank by "this store's prices + budget", but their user base is an order of magnitude larger.

Chow's own additions are three things: one-tap Instacart, shared lists (openable on the web) with a $10 referral credit, and a Latino grocer and Spanish interface. The referral rules are spelled out in detail: the invited friend has to buy an annual plan and stay paid for 45 days before the existing user gets $10 in PayPal cash, and a friend joining your shared list also counts as an invite (usechow.app referral terms). These all shipped in October, and the rating growth doesn't show their effect yet. It got going because it followed the right category, not because of these differences.

### Who is behind it

The developer is Flame Industries Inc., incorporated in Delaware, with a shared-office mailing address in St. Petersburg, Florida. The same company makes Mintly (an AI tool that generates e-commerce ad images and UGC videos, founded by Miami brothers Cyrus and Kaleb Estavillo), as well as Lighter (GLP-1 medication tracking), Closer (couples' communication) and Aura (AI companion). In other words, this is a small factory that churns out paywalled mini apps and also sells ad-creative tools. Mass-creating accounts and posting templated videos is routine for them; there's no direct evidence the videos were made with Mintly.

Apart from the TikTok sock puppets, the other channels are thin: Instagram @usechow.app has 179 followers and 3 posts; no press coverage; 60 posts on X in the last 0 days; whether Meta or Apple Search Ads were used can't be determined from outside.

### If it were you

**C: worth learning from, not worth copying.** Chow is a follower of a follower: the category was validated in June, crowded by July, the top tier adds thousands of ratings a week, and Chow itself adds only a few a week. Building the same thing in the US or UK would just land it behind the Vego and Bunlo pile. What's worth taking is the playbook: in a Top Grossing category with a low bar, ride a pitch that just blew up on TikTok, put up a hard paywall, and use a row of sock-puppet accounts to push it country by country.

**Who it's for** : a team of 1–2 people, with someone willing to cut three vertical videos a day; ideally based in a country outside the English-speaking world with a clear supermarket landscape (Germany's REWE / Edeka / Lidl, France's Carrefour / Leclerc, Spain's Mercadona, Brazil, Japan), who can write hooks in local speech and knows local supermarket prices.

**Who it's not for** : anyone aiming for the US or UK as the main battleground (TapCook and mise are already running creators and ads); anyone counting on organic store search (the term "meal planner" is already held by ReciMe and a string of established apps); anyone who can't get supermarket prices right (the total on the list is the category's selling point, and wrong prices mean users refund in the first week).

**How to do it** : nail one country and its three to five biggest chains first, no need to go wide. Copy the flow: household size, restrictions, store, budget → a week of dinners + a list with totals, with the annual plan and a short trial at the end of signup. Make the shared list a web link, and pair it with anti-abuse referral rules like "credit only after the friend stays paid for 45 days". Send one reminder before the trial ends, since half of Chow's one-star reviews are about being charged right after the trial.

**How to get users** : Follow @cookwithdami's format: one account per persona (student, couple, mom with kids), one account per country's supermarkets and currency, e.g. "Can €40 at Lidl cover my week of dinners?", two or three posts a day. Then spend money on one or two local food UGC creators for a proper video. Potto's 29M-view video came from this (inferred).

**When was the window** : This category went from ignition to crowded in one month in the English-speaking market. By 9–October, others had already added French, Spanish and Portuguese (Chow 2.1 did too). If you want to launch in another country, get live before January 2027, ahead of the "save money / eat better in the new year" wave.

**What would mean you read it wrong** : ① TapCook, mise and other top players add your country's supermarkets and language and start paying local creators; ② a month after launch, your faceless accounts still average a few hundred views per post, none break 10K, and you never chart in the top grossing ranks; ③ the reverse check on Chow: if it's still around rank 50 and under a few dozen ratings by early 2027, then the "few users, high price" chart position holds, and the faceless-account-matrix plus paywall playbook is more replicable than it looks.

## Why Chow: Meal Planner & Groceries (iOS 6807514592) got traction

> Research day 2026-11-06. Data from our appstore / metaads / tiktokads libraries (from 2026-10-28), Apple lookup and store pages, usechow.app terms pages, TikHub TikTok search, x-radar, and Jina web search.

### One line

Chow is a subscription app that generates a week of dinners, a grocery list, and a budget based on household size, dietary restrictions, and which store you shop at (hard paywall, annual $39.99–59.99, weekly $9.99,3 with a free trial). It's not the pioneer: from 2026 to 6, July Potto, mise, TapCook, Whipp, and NeatEat already turned "pick a store + set a budget → weekly menu + priced list" into a category, and blew it up with TikTok creators and UGC. Chow only followed in Sep 11. It landed around #50 on the US Food & Drink Top Grossing chart thanks to three things: riding a category that was already proven, the high price point a hard paywall allows, and a batch of faceless TikTok accounts it started running in late October. The team behind it is the Estavillo brothers, who make Mintly, an AI ad creative tool (Flame Industries Inc.).

### 1. Basic data

- Listed 2026-09-11, developer Flame Industries (seller Flame Industries Inc., a Delaware company, mailing address St. Petersburg, FL 7901 4th St N STE 300, a coworking/virtual office). Version 2.1.1 (10-26). Sources: Apple lookup, usechow.app/privacy.

- Ratings: US 48 total, average 4.65; global 49. At 10-28 it had 45 ratings, and in 10 days it only gained 4 (appstore library, app_day). Downloads are small.

- Top Grossing: On the US App Store Food & Drink Top Grossing chart, it has held between #48 and #78 from 10-28 to 11-06 (peaking at #48 on 11-04 and #49 on 11-06). The UK store hit #51 on 11-06 after bouncing around #97–#170. Germany reached #56 and Australia reached #63 on 10-31 and 11-04 respectively. Small markets like Slovenia, North Macedonia and Ireland occasionally crack the Free category chart (appstore library).

- Pricing (in-app purchases on the US store page): Chow Pro Yearly Pantry Plan has $39.99 / $49.99 / $59.99 tiers, Weekly is $9.99. Neither the website nor the store offers a free tier.

- Shipping fast: from 9-14 to 10-26 it released 7 versions. Features added, in order: one-tap recipe import from TikTok / Instagram (1.2), per-store pricing for 9+ supermarkets (1.3), a week planned to budget (2.0), shared shopping lists (openable on the web without the app), one-tap push to Instacart, Spanish (2.0), French / Portuguese / Simplified Chinese, iPad, and Latino supermarkets like Sedano's and Fresco y Más (2.1). Source: store version history.

### 2. Competitors: this is a category that crowded in during summer 2026

The same playbook (pick a supermarket + set a budget + household size / restrictions → a week's menu + priced shopping list, hard paywall) appeared in a cluster from 2026 to July 6. All data from the appstore library, US store, 11-06.

| Product | Launched | Scale (US rating / 7-day new / top grossing rank) | How Chow differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| TapCook: Budget Meal Plans(TestMaxx) | 2026-07-17 | 6,707 / +1,017 / #4 | Nearly identical messaging (enter zip code, pick a store, household size, budget, one list). It launched two months earlier, with 140× Chow's volume, using creators (#tapcook; danielle.budget, juliemotley.cooks, sunflowermama.coo; one video with 457k views) |
| mise - meal planner (TEGS LABS LTD, UK) | 2026-06-10 | 4,566 / +506 / #3 | Started on UK supermarkets, also covers calorie goals and leftover ingredients at home; runs TikTok ads (advertiser confirmed in the tiktokads library) |
| Potto - meal planner(Anete Ziedina) | 2026-06-12 | 2,360 / +24 / #8 | The category igniter: 2026-06-24 @madimugc444 one video with 29.3M views (#pottoapp); no account required, and it even looks at what cookware you have; growth has since slowed |
| Whipp(EVOY LTD) | 2026-06-12 | 711 / +176 / #6 | Same category, focused on "a week planned in one minute" |
| NeatEat(Streamline Merch LLC) | 2026-07-17 | 1,437 / +49 / #19 | Same category, with creator promotion (@sydney_eats0, one video with 35k views) |
| Vego / Bunlo / WeeknightBite / ChowWeek and others | 2026-09–10 | 0–140 ratings | Copycat small apps launched at the same time, mostly not gaining traction yet |
| ReciMe | 2021-11 | 328k / +4,638 / #1 | A big player that began as a recipe collection app and also has meal plans; doesn't build menus around supermarket prices or budgets |
| eMeals / Plan to Eat / Samsung Food / Mealime | 2013–2017 | eMeals 53k; Plan to Eat 6,115; Samsung Food 6,444 | Established meal-planning app; doesn't build menus around "this supermarket's prices + budget" |
| Instacart (big player) | — | 4.87M ratings | Has its own recipes and cart; Chow doesn't compete with it, it pushes lists to it |

Bottom line: Chow is a second-tier latecomer in this category, not the originator.

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **TikTok faceless account matrix / UGC (verified, main channel)** . Searching "chow app meal planner" on TikHub turns up 6+ small accounts posting Chow videos. All are new, with single- to double-digit followers, posting several times a day, using a fixed script template ("how did nobody tell me", "as a broke student", "how far can £30 get me"), with common tags #chow / #chowmealplanner:
    - @cookwithisa0 (10-01 to 10-10,5 followers, mentions Aldi and Instacart);
    - @prepwithtali (from 10-25, 40 followers, recent 10 videos total 54k views, one at 37k);
    - @cookwithdami (from 10-26, 9 followers, UK supermarkets only: Tesco / Aldi / Lidl / Sainsbury's / ASDA, "what £30 buys");
    - @mealswithmara_ (from 10-25, 79 followers, 3 posts a day);
    - @chefwithsophie (from 10-30);
    - @tylermrocka.cooks (US supermarket "$100 budget challenge" videos, same format, but I didn't see Chow named in the video, so unverified whether it's Chow's account). The UK account started posting in late October, and Chow's UK Top Grossing rank climbed from 100-plus to 11-06 #51 over the same stretch, so the timing lines up. The whole matrix doesn't pull much views (a few thousand to tens of thousands per account), nowhere near the 29M hit from Potto.

2. **Referral cash + shared list virality (verified)** . usechow.app/referral-terms says: if a friend you invited buys an annual plan and keeps paying for 45 days, you get $10 cash (paid via PayPal). Sending a shared shopping list to a friend who joins in the app also counts as an invite. Shared lists can be opened on the web without the app. This turns a product feature directly into an acquisition channel.

3. **Instagram (verified but small)** : @usechow.app, 179 followers, 3 posts, started posting from 9-29.

4. **Paid acquisition (unverified)** : no Page for Chow or Flame Industries found in the metaads library. That library's keyword list lacks meal planner, so a miss doesn't mean they didn't advertise. Chow is "unconfirmed" in the tiktokads library, and no TikTok ads were found in Europe. Apple Search Ads can't be checked.

5. **Suspected review-farming on the store page:** between 10-05 and 10-08, several all-caps 5-star reviews showed up ("AMAZING APP", "AMAZING TIME SAVER!"), in the same week @cookwithisa0 posted videos. Later reviews turn to 1 stars, complaining it "looks free but only asks for a subscription at the end of signup" and "charged me right after the trial."

6. **Media / X / Reddit / PH / HN** : Nothing found. x-radar searched "usechow" and "Chow meal planner" and got 0 results in the last 60 days; Jina search only returned the official site, store pages, and third-party data sites.

### 4. Why it took off

- **The category is already proven; Chow is a follower** : Potto proved in 2026 June with a 29M-view video that "pick a supermarket + budget → weekly menu" works on TikTok, and TapCook and mise followed into the top 5 of the category charts. Chow entered in September copying this value proposition, skipping the cost of validating demand.

- **Hard paywall + annual subscription, high price point** : the bar for the #50 spot in the Food & Drink Top Grossing category is low. A few $40–60 annual subscriptions a day can hold it around #50; 48 ratings against a #49 Top Grossing rank suggests few users, but a high share of them pay.

- **The team makes ad creative** : Flame Industries also makes Mintly (usemintly.com, AI-generated e-commerce ad images and UGC videos, founders Cyrus and Kaleb Estavillo, Cutler Bay, Miami; Mintly's terms name Flame Industries Inc.), plus Lighter (GLP-1 tracking, 2026-07), Closer (couples communication, 2026-06) and Aura (AI companion, 2024-09). It is already a small factory of paywalled apps that makes its own creative, so running batches of TikTok accounts posting the same script is routine for them. But there is no direct evidence that the videos Chow used were made with Mintly.

- **Supermarkets by country** : the UK account focuses on Tesco / Aldi and pound budgets; the version adds European and Latin American supermarkets and supports 5 interface languages. That is where the scattered UK, German and Australian chart placements came from.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with its peers, Chow adds: one-tap ordering through Instacart (from 10-07; TapCook and Potto don't appear to offer this), shared lists + web visitors + $10 cashback, recipe import from TikTok / Instagram, and Latin American supermarkets with Spanish UI. But the core value proposition, "pick a store + budget → weekly menu + list," is nearly word for word what TapCook, Potto, mise and NeatEat offer. These differences did not cause it to take off. It took off by riding the category, a high-priced paywall and a matrix of amateur accounts. The most plausible working differentiators are the shared-list referral loop and the Instacart closed loop, but both launched only in October, and the current rating growth (+3 in 7 days) is too early to show results.

### 6. How many people are seeing it now

Almost nobody knows about it yet. No media coverage, 0 posts on X, no TrustMRR listing, and nobody is posting revenue. Instagram has 179 followers; TikTok has only its own small account matrix. But the category itself is already crowded (see the table above), so "nobody knows Chow" does not mean "nobody knows this path."

### 7. Copycats

ChowWeek: Meal Planner (You Liang Tan, 2026-09-25,0 rating, chowweek.com): the name and the pitch "taste, time, budget → weekly menu + one list" closely mirror Chow. Across the category, new apps keep appearing from 9 to October (Vego, Bunlo, WeeknightBite, CartCraft and others).

### 8. What others can learn

- "See who went viral on TikTok first, then follow with the same value proposition + a hard paywall": in a category like Food & Drink, where the Top Grossing bar is low, a few dozen paying users can get you charted.

- The amateur account matrix: each account gets a fixed persona (student / UK family / US supermarket challenge), each account covers one country's supermarkets and currency, scripts reuse a few fixed hooks, and it posts 2–3 videos a day.

- Turn a product feature (the shared shopping list) into the referral entry point, and pay cashback only on annual subscriptions, only after 45 days of retention, to keep it from being farmed.

- Push the list to Instacart so the flow goes from plan to order in one chain.
