During the Pokémon 30th anniversary pack-opening craze, a small Turkish studio reskinned its sports card app

What it is Point the camera at a Pokémon or MTG card and it tells you which card it is, roughly what it's worth, and what your whole collection is worth. Free to download, $13/week subscription.

Why it took off The Pokémon 30th anniversary set launched Sep 16, and the app went live two days later. It leaned on "TCG Card Scanner" in the title for store search, sat in the low-barrier Reference category, and used a high-priced weekly subscription so a small number of payers could cover costs.

CHow you could follow Don't build another Pokémon or sports card scanner. Copy the method: scan + value + collection + weekly subscription, applied to a collectible category that isn't saturated and has reliable price data (coins, stamps, K-pop photocards, figures, sneakers). Aim for better accuracy than the competition.

Grade C: Stash is itself a copycat. The space already has Collectr, the free TCGplayer scanner, HoloDex and FoilSnap from a year earlier, and about 150 new look-alikes. The revenue template has been publicly shared by third parties. What's worth taking is the method of moving it to a new category. Entering this exact niche directly isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

TCG Card Scanner - Stash is an app that scans Pokémon cards and tells you what they're worth. It launched 7 weeks ago, has 122 ratings in the US store, and reached the top of the Reference Top Grossing charts in Ireland, Hong Kong, and Poland. There's nothing new in it. Troodon, the Turkish studio behind it, used the same template half a year ago to ship a sports card scanner app, then swapped "sports cards" for "Pokémon cards" and shipped again. About 150 similar apps have launched in this space since May. What's worth taking is the copying method, not the product.

A card it misidentified as a 2005 card

In 2026 Sep 16, Pokémon Trading Card Game released its 30th-anniversary expansion, "30th Celebration" (Pokémon official site), made entirely of holo cards. Two days later, on Sep 18, Stash listed it.

On Nov 3, a US user left a one-star review on the App Store: "The first card I scanned was from the 30 2026 anniversary set, and it labeled it as a 2005 card. It even got the Pokémon name wrong, lol. Uninstalled." The same day, another one-star review said it "values your cards using eBay listings, and those listings often aren't even the same card." Earlier, an Oct 14 review spelled out the price: "They charge you 13 dollars a week! There are plenty of free options. Don't buy it."

Even with an app that misidentifies cards and charges $13 a week, its US rating still climbs by 4 to 5 a day. The reason is the studio behind it.

What it is

Point the camera at a physical card and the app identifies it, gives an estimated market price, adds it to your digital collection, and shows how your total collection value changes over time. The first line of the store description is "Scan. Value. Collect." The website stashtcg.app also says "Ask AI anything about your cards." English only.

The app is free to download, but a subscription wall appears after a few scans. One five-star review from Oct 4 had a title that read: "The trial works, so use it while you can." The version has been stuck at 1.2 (Sep 30), with no updates since.

It's a reskin

Troodon's full name is TROODON YAZILIM TEKNOLOJI REKLAM HIZMETLERI…, a Turkish company ("REKLAM" means advertising). It has three apps on the App Store: a heart rate monitor (2024-10), Sports Card Scanner - Cardora (2026-05-08), and Stash.

The two card apps follow the same naming formula: "category keyword + short brand." Stash's terms of service on its website say, "The App allows users to: Scan sports cards using the device camera." It scans Pokémon cards, but the terms are still the sports card version. Nobody updated them.

Cardora got there first: US store 893 ratings (iTunes, 11-06), #40 in the US Sports Top Grossing. The screen-capture site screensdesign recorded its whole flow: a tracking-consent prompt on launch, a few feature intro pages, asking whether you're a beginner or a pro and which card types you collect, then birthday, gender and email, a progress bar that runs to 100%, and a "weekly subscription, free trial first" paywall. The page's estimated revenue for Cardora reads $100k in the list summary and "$260k/mo" in the page title (11-06). Same site, two numbers, both third-party estimates.

Stash takes that exact playbook and applies it to Pokémon and MTG.

How big the numbers are

other storesReference Top Grossing: best in Ireland at #37 (11-03), Hong Kong 45, Uruguay 46, Poland 74App Store charts by store

Take these numbers with a grain of salt. The US store gets four or five ratings a day; at typical rating rates that implies a few hundred downloads a day (inferred). The Reference Top Grossing bar in small countries is low: a $13 weekly subscription only needs a few sales to reach the top 100, and those stores have no local ratings at all. It shows the app is taking money, not how much.

Where the traffic comes from

First, store search. The title starts with "TCG Card Scanner", which captures that search term. In the US store, "stash tcg" puts 11-06 at #2 and "stash" at #4 (iTunes search).

Second, a smart category choice. It didn't go into the crowded Utilities or Entertainment categories; it went into Reference. People see it at #70 on that category's free chart, and a handful of sales is enough to push it up the paid chart.

Third, it caught a wave of unboxing. The 30 anniversary set launched in Sep 16, and the first question after pulling a pack is "what's this card worth?" The question is instant, frequent, and asked on a phone. The main box product of this set just launched (per TCGplayer's buying guide, Nov 6), so the demand should run through to Christmas.

Fourth, it collided with a name twin. Another developer, Verified Studios, launched "Stash - TCG Price Tracker" in June. It has only 9 US ratings, but several TikTok accounts post about it daily, with bios saying "download Stash on the App Store." When users search "Stash TCG," the #2 result is Troodon's app, which has more ratings. Most of these videos get a few hundred views, so it's impossible to tell how much traffic gets siphoned off, and there's no way to confirm whether Troodon knew the other app existed when naming theirs.

Fifth, possible paid acquisition, no evidence found. Troodon's website says "after launch we'll use targeted marketing to scale," and the company name includes "reklam" (advertising). But no public Meta ad records tie to either app, and Apple Search Ads can't be checked from outside. Ratings climb steadily every day with no spikes, which looks more like steady search and bidding traffic than one viral video (inferred).

One more thing stands out: recent five-star reviews are very short ("Fast and easy", "Mint condition", "Mew ex"), like people tapping through while rating after scanning a card. Cardora's screenshots do show a rating popup beneath the valuation result page. The one-star reviews are all long sentences about misidentification, wrong valuations, and high prices.

New look-alikes since May2026-05 to dateAbout 150, most with dozens to a few hundred ratingsSame template, mostly not gaining traction

There's also Google Lens and the eBay app's photo search: free, and they can recognize cards, but they don't give valuation ranges or collection sets.

The timeline for this niche is clear: HoloDex and FoilSnap appeared in the fall of 2025, and copycats flooded in from May 2026, with Troodon copying the sports cards first and then Pokémon. Stash isn't anyone's prototype; it is itself a second-wave copy.

What users are complaining about

The one-star reviews focus on two things.

Misidentification. "Scanned several cards in version one and it got none right" (10-31, two stars), "it misidentifies as often as it gets it right, don't pay for an app this inconsistent" (10-31, one star), plus the card at the top that got read as a 2005 30 anniversary card.

Wrong valuations, too expensive. "It prices off eBay listings, and those listings often aren't even the same card" and "13 dollars a week when plenty of free options exist."

These two complaints are exactly the moats of the established players: TCGplayer has its own sale prices, Collectr has a full card database, and Rare Candy's scanning is free outright. A thin-wrapper app can't win on either point, so it has to earn back its cost through search placement and subscription pricing.

If it were you

C: You can learn a replicable playbook, but don't go after Pokémon card scanning. The niche has a leader with 69k ratings, a free-scanning trading platform, an early factory-made entrant a year ahead, and 150 new look-alikes since May. Stash is itself a copycat, and its volume rests on the studio having already run this playbook once.

Who it suits: small studios that already run a "recognize + value + collect + weekly subscription" app and can reskin and ship in a few weeks, or people who know a specific niche collectible well and have a reliable source of price data.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone starting from scratch on Pokémon, MTG, or sports card scanning. You'd be up against free TCGplayer, the most complete Collectr database, and over a hundred same-template apps. People without a price data source who try to build valuations from eBay listings will see it in the one-star reviews.

How to do it: follow Troodon's path and move to a collectible category the template hasn't saturated yet: coins, stamps, K-pop photocards, figurines, vinyl, sneakers. First confirm the category has usable price data (auction sale records, dedicated price sites), then build. Title it "category + Scanner + short brand," put it in a low-barrier category, and show the paywall and rating prompt at the moment a scan returns a result. Recognition accuracy is the only place you can truly separate yourself from others, so test it on a hundred real cards (or real coins) before you ship.

How to acquire users: build on store search, and fight for the category keywords in your title and subtitle. Ride the category's own moments (new set releases, anniversaries, big auctions), the way Stash did by shipping within days of a new set's launch. Whether to pay for installs depends on payback: the higher the weekly price, the more you can afford to bid on Apple Search Ads.

How early you need to be: the Pokémon unboxing wave runs until Christmas. If you pick a different category, time the window to that category's own peaks, not Pokémon's.

What would show this read was wrong: ① if Stash's US rating count isn't over 300 by late December, or it drops out of the top 150 on Reference Top Free, that means the reskinned app can't even hold this level of volume, and the copy-it playbook pays off less than it looks; ② conversely, if Troodon launches a third app (say coin or sneaker scanning) and catches Stash's volume within two months, the "template × category" path is still open and worth grabbing the next category; ③ if Collectr or TCGplayer moves recognition and valuation into the free tier, or Google Lens starts giving valuations directly, every paid thin-wrapper scanner gets harder at once.

TCG Card Scanner - Stash (iOS 6807526508) research report

Research date 2026-11-06. Regions checked: App Store library scanned across all stores (Stash appeared on the Reference charts in 16 stores); detailed breakdown uses the US store; competitors only checked in the US store.

Bottom line

Stash didn't break out on anything new. It's a换皮 (reskin) of its sister app Sports Card Scanner - Cardora, built by a small Turkish studio, Troodon (TROODON YAZILIM TEKNOLOJI REKLAM HIZMETLERI…LTD). Cardora launched on 2026-05-08, with third-party estimates of $100k–$260k in monthly revenue. Stash copied the same template as-is: photo recognition → valuation range → collection portfolio → weekly subscription paywall, moved over to the Pokémon and MTG card niche. It got 122 ratings in 7 weeks and steadily adds 4–5 new ratings a day. What drove it: the Pokémon 30th-anniversary pack-opening hype, keyword-stuffed store titles, a low-bar Reference category chart, and a very high $13/week subscription price that lets a handful of paying users push it onto multiple small-country Reference grossing charts. The scale is tiny and the niche is extremely crowded (since 2026-05, roughly 150 similar card-scanner apps have launched in the US store).

1. What the product is

  • Point the camera at physical trading cards (mostly Pokémon, also MTG and other TCGs) to get a valuation, add them to a collection, and see the portfolio's total value over time. The website stashtcg.app also advertises "Ask AI anything about your cards" (https://stashtcg.app/).
  • Pricing: the store lists it as free, but a user review says "they're gonna charge you $13 a week" (2026-10-14-star review, Apple reviews RSS). Another review titled "This Trial Version for App works, make use of it while you can" points to a free trial followed by a hard paywall.
  • No updates since version 1.2,2026-09-30 (iTunes lookup).
  • Template traces: Stash's terms page reads "The App allows users to: Scan sports cards using the device camera, Recognize and identify sports cards" (https://stashtcg.app/terms). That's copied straight from Cardora's terms without edits. The naming follows the same pattern: "Sports Card Scanner - Cardora" → "TCG Card Scanner - Stash", keyword first, brand second.

Takeaway: the Top Grossing bar in small countries is very low. A $13/week subscription only needs a few purchases to reach the top 100, so "charting in several countries" shows it's collecting money, but not how much. In the US store it's adding 4–5 ratings a day; at typical rating rates, that suggests daily downloads in the hundreds (inference, unverified).

Conclusion: this is an "AI scanning + valuation + subscription" template niche. After HoloDex and FoilSnap took off in the autumn of 2025, copycats flooded in starting May 2026. Stash is one of those copycats, and it's the same developer's second copy.

4. Growth tactics

  1. Store search / ASO (confirmed): the title "TCG Card Scanner - Stash" targets the term "tcg card scanner". In a US-store search, "stash tcg" ranks #2 and "stash" ranks #4 (iTunes search API, 2026-11-06).
  2. Riding search traffic from same-name UGC (partly confirmed, impact unverified): TikTok accounts promoting "Stash" include trackyourstash (312 followers, bio "Download Stash - TCG Price Tracker on the App Store today", posting since 2026-08-24, peak 5,257 views), stashmarket.info (bio is just "Stash - TCG Price Tracker"), ripwithnick6 (239 followers, posting almost daily since 10-22 with "Stash - TCG Price Tracker, free in the app store"), and get.stash. All of them promote the Verified Studios app, not this Troodon app (TikHub). trackyourstash's early copy said "Download Stash TCG", so someone searching "Stash TCG" in the store sees both apps. Troodon's version has more ratings and ranks #2, so it may be siphoning off some of that traffic. These videos only get a few hundred views, so their reach is limited. Whether Troodon knew the other app existed when naming theirs can't be confirmed.
  3. Paid acquisition (unverified): Troodon's website says "After launch we scale with targeted marketing… invest in marketing, distribution" (https://www.troodon.studio/), and the company name itself includes "REKLAM" (advertising). But the metaads library has no advertiser traced to Stash or Cardora. The library only tracks Pages that surface in keyword top results, so a miss doesn't mean they didn't run ads. Apple Search Ads can't be checked. Rating growth is steady with no spikes, which looks more like ongoing search or bidding traffic than a content-driven surge (inference).
  4. Instagram / YouTube Shorts: the "Stash TCG" Reels captions found in search match the trackyourstash copy, and they're all from Verified Studios (Jina search).
  5. Press / X / Reddit: x-radar found 0 posts mentioning "stashtcg / Stash TCG scanner / Cardora" in the last 60 days. No press coverage.
  6. Rating prompts (inference): Cardora's flow includes a rating prompt after a scan finishes (screensdesign screenshot "valuation results … with a bottom rating modal"), and Stash uses the same template. Recent five-star reviews are very short ("Fast and easy", "Mint condition", "Mew ex"), while the negative ones are about misidentified cards, wrong valuations, and high prices. That fits a structure where a rating prompt appears when scan results come up.

5. Why it got this far (for its size)

  • Proven template: Cardora first ran the playbook on sports cards (887 ratings, Sports Top Grossing #40, third-party estimate of $100k+/month). Stash is a copy with near-zero development risk.
  • Timing: 2026 is the 30th anniversary of Pokémon TCG, and new set pack-opening is hot (both reviews and TikTok mention the "30th anniversary set"). After opening a pack, "what's this card worth?" is an instant, high-frequency need.
  • Good category choice: placed in Reference rather than Utilities or Entertainment. The chart bar is low, so ranking #60–90 in the US Reference Top Free gives exposure, and a few subscriptions in small countries put it on the Top Grossing chart.
  • High-priced subscription: $13/week. A small number of paying users covers paid acquisition. This is how factory apps like this make money back.
  • Store search placement: ranks well on title keywords plus the "Stash" brand term, and happens to collide with a same-named product running TikTok campaigns.

6. Differentiation

Almost none. Its features (scanning, valuation, portfolio, AI Q&A) are the same as HoloDex, FoilSnap, Collectr and 150 new entrants. Recognition accuracy is questioned in several negative reviews (30th-anniversary cards identified as 2005-year-old cards, first-edition cards not recognized, valuations drawn from eBay's mispriced listings). The only things that could be called "different" are the dark-mode interface and "Ask AI", and neither is unique. It reached this level not through differentiation but through the studio's ability to copy, plus search and paid acquisition, plus a high-priced subscription that pays back quickly.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • Stash itself: almost nobody knows about it. No press, no X discussion, no public revenue.
  • But the playbook is already very public. screensdesign and paywallscreens have openly published Cardora's onboarding, subscription paywall, and revenue estimates, and about 150 similar apps have flooded the niche since 2026-05. There's no one "specifically copying Stash", because Stash is itself a copycat.

8. What to borrow

  • The "AI recognition + valuation + collection + weekly subscription" template can be copied horizontally across collectible categories (sports cards → TCG, and next possibly coins, stamps, K-pop photocards, figurines; Pocastock and Deckard are already doing some of these).
  • Title as "category keyword + short brand name", placed in a category with a low chart bar (Reference).
  • The moment scan results appear is the best time for the paywall or rating prompt.
  • But note: this niche is already a red ocean. Accuracy and price-data sources are what keep users, and negative reviews focus on exactly those two points.

9. Uncertain

  • Actual downloads and revenue: Apple doesn't publish them. Cardora's $100k–$260k/month is a third-party estimate, and the numbers on the same page don't match from one spot to another.
  • Whether Troodon spends on Apple Search Ads, Meta or TikTok for Stash: no evidence found, and it can't be ruled out.
  • How much traffic the Verified Studios "Stash" TikTok content sends to this Troodon app: can't be separated out.
  • The library starts at 10-28, so there's no curve from its 9-18 launch to 10-28. How the roughly 80 ratings from that period came in is unknown.
  • Stash / Cardora not found in the Google Play library (Troodon's website says there's a Play version, unverified).
