The Sri Lankan lottery app sitting behind TikTok and Netflix: it's not newly emerged. It's 500k Android users' product moved to iPhone
What it is A draw-results lookup and QR-scan prize checker for Sri Lanka's two state lotteries (NLB and DLB). Available in three local languages, and lottery vendors can batch-scan tickets to verify prizes.
Why it took off The Android version already had 500k+ users. The website domain is the lottery game name players search every day, and when the same codebase got an iOS version, people installed it. The iPhone equivalents were either official ticket-sales apps or abandoned, and Sri Lanka's iOS chart bar is low, so a handful of ratings a day could land it in the top ten of the Entertainment chart.
CHow you could follow Don't go head-to-head in Sri Lanka. Pick a small country with multiple state lotteries where the official app doesn't verify prizes. Use the flagship game name for your domain and results site to capture search, then build a QR-scan prize checker, and use a free web scanner to bring in lottery vendors.

Kotipathi LK is a Sri Lankan app for lottery draw results and QR-scan prize checking. In Nov 6 it ranked #9 on the Sri Lanka App Store's Entertainment free chart, ahead of TikTok, Netflix, and a string of short-drama apps. It looks like a newly breakout product, but the local small team behind it has been building on Android for over two years, with 500k+ installs and a website named after the lottery game. The iOS version only arrived in 9. Below: how it captures traffic, why iOS made it so easy to chart, and whether this playbook can be replicated in another country.
Every night at 9 o'clock, a lottery player and a stack of tickets
The Development Lottery Board (DLB) draw airs nightly at 9 on the national broadcaster Rupavahini, one session in Sinhala, and at 9:30 Channel Eye repeats one in Tamil. The other state lottery, the National Lotteries Board (NLB), also runs several draws daily. Players often hold tickets from both, but the two official websites and apps each report only their own results, and the official apps are mainly for selling tickets.
On Jul 2026 29, a user named Shajitha Nadeesh left a review on the Android version on Google Play; 36 people marked it helpful:
Scanning tickets saves a lot of time, and you can see the latest draw results. Well done, add more features in the future.
The developer replied the same day: "Thank you Mr. S.Nadeesh! We are here to help everyone!" In Aug 24, another review put it more bluntly: "Really useful, just sometimes it fails to scan. It would be great if the recognition accuracy improved."
These two reviews explain how it's used: players point their phone at the QR code on a ticket, and the screen immediately shows whether they've won and how much.
What it is
One app covers both NLB and DLB, roughly 18 games, in English, Sinhala, and Tamil. It has four main functions:
- Draw results: live results from both boards, draw notifications, history, and PDF downloads.
- QR prize checking: scan a ticket to see the prize, works offline too. There's a "dealer mode" so lottery vendors can batch-scan one ticket after another. In Oct 21, an update added "scan from gallery."
- Number analysis: historical trends, number frequency, and "AI number suggestions."
- Web tool: scan.kotipathi.lk, a free web scanner that works with a phone camera, or with a USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner for batch ticket checking.
On Google Play the Android version has 500K+ downloads, a 4.7 rating, and about 6,100 reviews. It's labeled "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases," and the store page shows "#1 Entertainment Free" (Google Play Sri Lanka, 11-06). A third-party APK site gives a precise install count of 677,818+. The iOS version launched in Sep 10; by Nov 6 it had 46 ratings with an average of 4.57.
Why it could take off on iPhone
First, it didn't start from zero. The iOS and Android versions share the same bundle ID (com.hneati.lotteryresults) and version numbering, with releases from 1127 to 1129. In other words, the same codebase ships cross-platform, so on the day iOS launched, the brand built on the website and Android was already there. Old users who switched to iPhone, and new users who found the website, could install it right away.
Second, the domain is the word people search every day. "Kotipathi" is Sinhala for "millionaire," and it's also the name of DLB's flagship game, Ada Kotipathi. Players search this term after draws, and the local domain kotipathi.lk is held by the team. The earliest archived snapshot found online is from December 2024. The site has results pages by game and draw number, a draw calendar, and a winners map. Searching "kotipathi" puts its own website, scanner, and two store pages at the top.
Third, there were almost no rivals on iOS.
| Product | Launched | iOS Sri Lanka store (11-06) | Problem |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLB Sweep (official DLB) | 2019-10 | 144 rating, Entertainment chart #27 | Mainly for selling tickets, DLB only |
| Winway (official NLB) | 2023-11 | 25 rating | Mainly for selling tickets, NLB only |
| Lottery - Sri Lanka(Treinetic) | 2016-11 | 171 rating | Not updated since April 2019 |
| Sri Lanka Lottery Results (individual developer) | 2026-05 | 45 rating, 7 new in 0 days, Entertainment chart #120 | With no website or Android users behind it, it has stopped growing |
On iPhone, the only app that checks results from two lotteries, tells you on a scan whether you won, and keeps getting updated.
Fourth, the iOS chart bar in Sri Lanka is low. From Oct 28 to Nov 6, it added only 0 to 5 ratings a day, which was enough to rank #88 to #112 on the overall free chart and #7 to #11 in Entertainment. iPhone has a small share in Sri Lanka, so the rank doesn't take much volume.
Fifth, updates never stopped. The Android version went from v895 to v1127,30 across several releases between April and October of 2026, almost one a week. The release notes are all about scanning details, like taking less screen space during batch scans and not repeating prize announcements.
So split it up: scan-to-verify and the agent model are why it keeps over 60 million Android users; on iOS, it charted because of its existing brand, search traffic and weak competitors. It's the Android version with a new channel added, not iPhone users discovering something new.
Where the money comes from
Publicly, only two things are visible: the Android version has ads and in-app purchases. How much it earns and what it sells (ad removal, number picking, or the agent model) can't be found. The developer has never disclosed revenue, and no media has reported on it.
Charging agents is the most natural next step: the small shops that sell lottery tickets check a huge pile of tickets every day, and the web scanner already supports barcode guns, but whether anyone is paying isn't visible from outside. Sri Lankan ad rates are low, and the population is about 22M, so this business has a low ceiling (inference).
Who else is in this, and does anyone know about it
Very few people know. Searching for it on X and TikTok returns 0 results each, and the YouTube "Ada Kotipathi today's results" videos are all from other channels. I found no evidence it runs its own promotion. Its reputation is confined to Sri Lankan players and agent circles.
But locals are already copying it. The site kodipathi.lk differs by one letter (t changed to d) and copies the scanning, three-language support and light/dark themes. On Android, Lanka Draw also leads with scan-to-verify; on iOS, a personal app released in May has stopped growing. Going head-to-head locally means facing an opponent that holds the domain and 600k Android users, while you have none of that.
Three moves you can take
- The lottery name is the keyword. The flagship draw names of national lotteries are already searched every day. Grab the domain with the national name, run a results site to catch those searches, then send people into the app.
- The official operators work separately, so you combine them. The two state lotteries don't talk to each other. A third party's value is checking both in one place; scan-to-verify is an action that brings people back after every draw.
- Use a free web tool to bring in the shops.A web scanner that supports barcode guns costs nothing. Get the agents who check the most tickets each day to use it first, so there's someone to charge later.
If it were you
My take:This is a playbook you can learn from, not a product you can clone. Sri Lanka's slot is already taken by it. Whether the same approach would work in another country, whether that spot is open, and whether ads can support it all have to be checked yourself.
Who it fits:Developers based in a small country in South Asia, East Africa or Southeast Asia who speak the local language and understand how local lotteries are sold; or people already running a results site for some country (lotteries, exam scores, exchange rates) who want to add an app people open every day.
Who it doesn't fit:People who want to compete head-on in Sri Lanka; people hoping to make big money; people unwilling to touch lottery-themed content (many ad platforms and app stores impose extra restrictions on it).
How to do it:Pick the country first. Criteria: two or more state lotteries, QR codes or barcodes printed on the tickets, an official app that sells tickets but doesn't verify results, and local competing apps that are stale or rough. Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan's lottery bonds and several East African countries are worth checking; whether there's an open slot is unverified. Start with a website plus Android: combined results from multiple lotteries, scan-to-verify, local languages, draw notifications. Add iOS once Android has traction, reusing the same codebase.
How to get users:Name the product and domain after the local flagship draw name; give each draw's results its own page to catch searches after the draw; use the free web scanner to pitch the ticket-selling shops, one by one.
When to move:No rush, there's no window as such. But whoever claims the domain for that draw name first gets the cheapest traffic.
What would mean I got this wrong:If searches for that draw name in your chosen country already show a well-run local results site on top, or if the official app already scans all draw types, there is no open slot. Pick another country or don't do it.

Kotipathi LK (iOS id6807764986): Sri Lankan lottery results lookup + scan-to-verify
Bottom line
It didn't come out of nowhere. A Sri Lankan local team (PikLig Developers) built an Android app and website over at least two years, and 2026-09-10 added the iOS version. The Android version has about 678k installs, and the website kotipathi.lk with the same name has existed since before December 2024. On iOS it reached #7–#11 on the Sri Lankan Entertainment free chart, thanks to three things: the brand and existing Android users naturally flowing to iPhone; the low bar on Sri Lanka's iOS chart (only 0–5 new ratings a day was enough for #88–#112 on the overall free chart); and nearly all competing iOS apps having stopped updating. Its differentiator is scan-to-verify plus batch scanning for agents, but that explains why it keeps users on Android; on iOS, what got it going was mainly the existing brand and traffic.
1. Data
iOS (appstore library, Sri Lanka store, 2026-10-28 to 11-06)
| Date | Overall free chart | Entertainment Top Free | Score | Added that day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 88 | 9 | 34 | – |
| 10-31 | 91 | 7 | 40 | +5 |
| 11-02 | 112 | 11 | 44 | +2 |
| 11-04 | 88 | 7 | 45 | +1 |
| 11-06 | 112 | 9 | 46 | 0 |
- Charted only in the lk store. Average rating 4.57 from 46 ratings (iTunes lookup, 11-06). No samples in the reviews table: too few ratings, so it falls outside the collection scope.
- Version 1127→1129, same version numbering as the Android version (Android 1127 was released Oct 23, per APKPure). Bundle ID is
com.hneati.lotteryresults, the same as the Android package name, indicating one codebase shipped across platforms. iOS launched Sep 10; on APKPure the Android v1086 was also released Sep 10 as a "build variants" release. - Currently #9 on the Entertainment free chart, behind TikTok, Netflix and a string of short-drama apps (appstore library v_chart 11-06). Roughly #100 on the overall Sri Lankan free chart, so only single-digit daily downloads are needed to get on.
- Recall card says Similarweb showed it in the top 3 of the Entertainment free chart and around 68 overall; our library (from 10-28) only shows its best as #7 and #88, and the top 3 is unverified.
Android (same developer, PikLig Developers, package name com.hneati.lotteryresults)
- Google Play shows 500K+ downloads, with ads (Play store page 11-06). theappsfirm gives an exact figure of 677,818+, and apkturbo lists 667.1K+. Our googleplay library has no Sri Lankan store, so we couldn't check it there.
- Release history: on PGYER, v358 is already live under 2024-10-30; on APKPure, v895 through v1127 were released between April and October of 2026, almost one a week, so updates are frequent.
- On Android it was originally named "Lottery Results - Scan, Guess, Analyse & Manage" (per the apppage.net snapshot); now it's "Sri Lanka Lottery Results", and on APK sites it's called "Kotipathi".
Website
- kotipathi.lk: the earliest Wayback snapshot is 2024-12-02. In April 2025 there was a redirect with
utm_campaign=domain-migrationthat sent visitors to olitham.com (footer reads © 2024 PikLig Developers), and later it switched back to kotipathi.lk. The site now has a results homepage, search by draw type, a winners map, a draw calendar, a history table, and the free web scanner scan.kotipathi.lk (supporting phone cameras, USB barcode guns and Bluetooth barcode guns). - "Kotipathi" (Sinhala for "millionaire") comes from DLB's flagship draw Ada Kotipathi, a term people search every day, and the domain is exactly that word. Jina searches for "kotipathi.lk" and "kotipathi lottery scanner" return its own website, scanner, Play and App Store pages at the top.
2. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Kotipathi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DLB Sweep (official Development Lotteries Board app) | iOS / Android | 2019-10 | iOS lk 144 ratings, 7 days +2, Entertainment chart #27 | Official app, lets you buy tickets, see results from the past 6 months, and scan your own DLB tickets; doesn't handle NLB tickets |
| Winway (official National Lotteries Board NLB app, built by ThinkCube) | iOS / Android | 2023-11 | iOS lk 25 ratings | Official app for buying NLB tickets; doesn't cover DLB |
| Lottery - Sri Lanka(Treinetic) | iOS | 2016-11 | 171 rating, no update since 2019-04 | The older two that cover both draws, both stopped updating |
| Sri Lanka Lottery Results(Nuwan Malintha) | iOS | 2026-05 | 45 ratings, 7 days 0, Entertainment chart #120 | A solo-built new app, last update in September, growth has stalled |
| Lanka Draw(dev.zentium) | Android | Not verified | Not verified | Same focus on QR scanning and manual ticket lookup |
| kodipathi.lk | Web | 2026 (unverified) | Unknown | Name differs by one letter, features copied (QR scan, three languages, light/dark theme, voice readout) |
| results.govdoc.lk, magayo, lotterytexts, Kapruka lottery pages | Web | All different | SEO results pages | Only shows draw results, can't scan tickets |
| Lucky1.lk, BigWin.lk, FriMi | web / wallet | All different | – | Online lottery sales channels that also show results |
| nlb.lk and dlb.lk official sites | Web | – | Official | Two state lottery boards each publish their own results, with no single place to see both |
Some points to note: the official apps from both lottery boards exist to sell tickets, and each covers only its own draws. Third-party results apps on iOS have either stopped updating or never gained traction. So an iPhone app that checks both NLB and DLB in one place, with a scan that tells you if you won, is almost nobody's product. Kotipathi is the only one on iOS still being updated.
3. Growth tactics (where users come from)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Bring existing Android users and the brand over to iOS | Android version has about 678k installs and has been around for at least 2024 years; iOS and Android share the same bundle ID and version numbering | Yes |
| SEO (the domain is the draw name) | kotipathi.lk uses the draw name people search every day; searching for kotipathi ranks it first; the site has result pages by draw and draw number, a calendar, and a winners map | Yes (rankings are from our own searches, we don't have traffic data) |
| Free web tool to drive traffic | scan.kotipathi.lk is a free web QR scanner that supports USB and Bluetooth barcode scanners, used by lottery agents | The tool exists; whether it drives app downloads is unverified |
| App Store search | Few iOS apps in the Sri Lanka store cover this, and the ones that do are stale. Searching lottery, NLB, or DLB will likely surface it near the top | Unverified (iTunes search API is rate-limited) |
| Agents (small street-side ticket sellers) batch-verifying tickets | The app has an Agent mode; the web scanner supports USB and Bluetooth barcode scanners | The feature exists; how many agents actually use it is unverified |
| TikTok / X / YouTube creators | TikHub search for "kotipathi app" returns 0 results; x-radar returns 0; the "Ada Kotipathi today's result" videos on YouTube are all posted by other channels, and I found no promotion from the app itself | None found |
| Paid ads | No ad spend found; it earns from ads on Android (Play lists "Contains ads") | None found |
4. Why it can break out
- iOS doesn't start from zero: on Android it already has over 500k users and a brand that's been around for two years. When the iOS version launched, users who switched to iPhone and people who found the website could install it directly (same bundle ID, version numbers, and domain).
- The domain is a term users search every day: "Kotipathi" is the name of DLB's flagship draw, and players look up results every night at 9. By owning the .lk domain for a results site, it gets long-term search traffic without paying for it.
- Puts both state lotteries in one place: NLB and DLB each have their own site and official app, and players often hold tickets from both. It puts around 18 draws on one page, in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.
- Scan to check if you won: the ticket has a QR code, scan it and the prize amount shows right away. Also batch scanners for agents, plus USB and Bluetooth scanner guns. Lottery kiosks check a lot of tickets every day, so this is a must-have they open daily (B2B may be paid, the recall card mentions it too).
- Weak iOS competition, low bar to chart: Treinetic on iOS hasn't updated since 2019, Nuwan Malintha's new app has stopped growing, and the two official apps exist to sell tickets. In the Sri Lanka store, adding a single-digit number of ratings a day is enough to reach the top 110 Top Free and top 10 in Entertainment.
- Still being updated: on Android, from April to October of 2026 it shipped 30 versions, and the release notes are all about scanning details (like batch scanning taking up less screen space and avoiding repeated prize announcements). Most similar apps have stopped; this one is still changing.
5. Differentiation, and whether it was built by accident
The differentiation is NLB and DLB combined in one app + QR prize checking + batch agent mode + local three-language support, plus a free web tool site. On Android, QR prize checking and agent mode are the core reasons it keeps users and reached over 60 million installs. On iOS, it charts mainly because of its existing brand, SEO traffic, and weak competitors, not new features: iOS is essentially the Android version in a new wrapper. So "it worked on iOS" is filling a channel gap, not the product suddenly being discovered.
6. How well known it is, and whether anyone has copied it
- Spreads only within small circles: no public revenue numbers (not listed on TrustMRR, founder hasn't shared any), no press coverage found, and 0 posts on X and TikTok. It's known only among Sri Lankan players and agents.
- Already copied: kodipathi.lk (one letter off, t→d) copied the features (QR scan, three languages, theme switching); on iOS, Nuwan Malintha's "Sri Lanka Lottery Results" has been around since May of 2026; on Android, there's Lanka Draw.
- Small market: Sri Lanka has a population of about 22 million, iPhone share is low, the ceiling is low, and big players and outside teams won't come in.
7. What others can learn
- "Draw name = domain = app name": the flagship draw name of a state lottery is a natural search term. Build a results site on the local domain to capture SEO, then keep people with the app. This playbook can be copied to other small countries with multiple state lotteries where the official apps only sell tickets (Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan's lotteries, East Africa, parts of Southeast Asia).
- Combine data from several official sources + QR prize checking: officials only cover their own draws, so the value for a third party is merging them; the scan action gets people opening it daily.
- A free web tool to get the B2B started: a web barcode scanner that works with scanner guns. Pull in the lottery stalls first, then start charging later.
- Launch on Android first, then iOS: in markets with low iPhone share, validate on Android, then add iOS cheaply with cross-platform code (same bundle ID and version numbers). Small-country iOS charts have a low bar, so it's easy to chart.
8. Still unclear
- The recall card cites Similarweb saying "top 3 in Entertainment, around 68 overall"; we haven't verified this. Our database's best since 10-28 is #7 and #88.
- When the Android version first launched is unknown (we only know 2024-10 is already v358). We also couldn't find the team size of PikLig or who the founder is (the iOS seller is Sivasothy Sackthithazan, which from the name looks Tamil).
- Whether it charges agents, and how much ad revenue it makes: unknown.
- How much search traffic kotipathi.lk gets, and why it switched back after the olitham.com migration: unknown.
- Its ranking for "lottery" in the App Store search: the iTunes search API is rate-limited, so we couldn't check.
