One person pays, both get Pro: how a Korean couples budgeting app with 1 developers broke into the Top Grossing chart at #44
What it is A shared budgeting app for Korean couples, married pairs and cohabiting partners, with split settlements and shared net worth. One person subscribes to Pro and both can use it.
Why it took off The developer named the target group in casual language on Threads and Instagram, newlyweds and couples specifically, and 1 developers supporting each other brought the first users. Korean finance Top Grossing is a low bar: a few lifetime purchases pushed it to #40, and the next day it slipped back to beyond #100.
CHow you could follow Don't build another shared budgeting app in Korea. Take the 'one person pays, two unlock' pricing and the cold-start approach of naming the audience in questions, and apply it to your own two-person product, or try a market with fewer similar apps.

한집가계부 ('one-home budget book') launched in Oct 7 and by Nov 6 was already #44 on the Korean App Store finance Top Grossing chart, yet it has only 17 ratings total, and 100+ Android downloads. This isn't a story of building traction. It's a story of a very low chart bar. Still, two things are worth taking: treating 'a couple' as one paying unit, and the developer's zero-cost cold-start talk on Threads. Below: what it is, why the ranking jumped, how crowded the category is, and what move you should copy.
'When it first launched it only reached about #100'
The developer posts from the @hanjip_budget account on Threads, which has only 160 followers. The pinned post says:
아직 가계부 정착 못한 신혼부부 커플들 있어? (Are there any newlywed couples or couples who haven't settled on a budgeting app yet?)
Another, shorter: '아이폰 갤럭시 부부들 있어?' (Are there any couples where one uses an iPhone and the other a Galaxy?). The last line of the account bio reads '7일간 Pro 무료! 짝궁이랑 1+1': Pro free for 7 days, and buy one get one with your partner.
At the end of October he wrote on Threads: '처음 배포할때 100위 정도 한게 다였는데,, 이번에 올라갔어' ('When I first launched it only reached about #100, but this time it went up'). Around the same time he reposted a post saying 'finally got the first revenue'. Whether he wrote the original post himself is unverified.
What it is
A shared budget book for couples, married pairs and cohabiting partners. One person generates an invite code, the other enters it, and both phones see the same book. The features listed on the store page:
- Each person records their own income and expenses, and it shows who recorded each entry; fixed monthly expenses are logged automatically
- Tallies amounts by card and calculates monthly who owes whom and how much, based on the split ratio
- Records savings, deposits, investments and loans, tracks how 'our net worth' changes each month, and reminds you of due dates
- A separate book for plans like travel, moving, or preparing a newlywed home
- Excel export, and can import files from other budgeting apps
Pricing: free to download; Pro subscription ₩3,900 monthly, ₩14,900 yearly, ₩39,000 lifetime (about $28). The most prominent line on the store page is '한 명만 결제해도 둘 다 Pro' (Only one person needs to pay and both are Pro). Available on iOS and Android.
What #44 on the Top Grossing chart means
First look at its daily ranking (App Store Korea, Finance):
| Date | Best rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 10-30 | Top Grossing 42 | 14 |
| 10-31 | Top Grossing 64 | 14 |
| 11-01 | Top Grossing 90 | 15 |
| 11-02 | Top Grossing 115 | 15 |
| 11-04 | Top Free 136 | 17 |
| 11-05 | Top Grossing 169 | 17 |
| 11-06 | Top Grossing 44 | 17 |
42 dropped to 169, then back to 44 a day later. This looks like 'one or two sales on a given day (most likely a ₩39,000 lifetime purchase), then falling the next day' (inferred), not sustained revenue. On the same day's chart, the #60 app カネ has only 81 ratings. On Korea's finance Top Grossing chart, placings between #40 and #100 likely mean a few subscriptions per day (estimate).
So don't be fooled by 'hit the Top Grossing chart within a month of launch'. What it shows is that on a small country's category chart, a few lifetime purchases can buy an impressive ranking. Useful for exposure, not as a revenue signal.
Where users come from
All of it was driven by the developer; no paid ads were found.
- Naming the audience on Threads. Posts are all in casual '~있어?' (Are there any ...?) form, directly calling out newlyweds, couples, and mixed iPhone/Galaxy couples. Before launch he posted short videos on Instagram to build anticipation, writing '곧 App Store에서 만나요' (See you on the App Store soon). Individual posts got tens to hundreds of views.
- A 1-person developer mutual-support circle. He posts under the #1인개발 (1-person dev) tag, and has even posted mutual-boost threads like "Does anyone have a 1-person-developed app doing free promotion? Drop it in the comments and I'll check it out." An Oct 15 App Store review was blunt: "I installed it after seeing the developer's promo post, and as a fellow developer... quality is great, I'll use it well when my girlfriend and I get married."
- One download becomes two. The invite code naturally pulls in the other half, and one person paying for two Pro users removes the question of 'who pays'.
- People migrating from other apps. A review from Oct 11: '가계부 유목민으로 이것저것 참 많이 써봤는데……기존 앱이 무거워서 이주중입니다' (I've wandered through many budgeting apps and tried plenty, but the existing ones are heavy, so I'm migrating). Another from Oct 29: '공동가계부 10개 넘게 써봤는데 제일 마음에 들어요' (I've used over 10 shared budgeting apps, and this is my favorite).
What keeps people is the speed of iteration. Oct 30 was 1.4.0, and Nov 5 already reached 1.5.2, shipping three or four versions a week. Requests in the reviews, like installment display, fixed monthly expenses repeating, sorting by amount, and second-level categories, were all done within days. On Threads he also posted specifically: 'I read every piece of feedback from the feedback bot, and the next version added 3 more.' All 17 reviews are 5 stars.
How crowded the category is
Very crowded. Over 35 Korean budgeting apps on the App Store have 「shared / joint / couple / married / together」 in their names. About 2026 of them launched in the past 25 year(s), and most have only 0 to 10 ratings.
| Product | Launched | Score | 10-28 to 11-06 in the Finance Top Grossing chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 초록가계부 | 2025-01 | 449 | 11–21 |
| 머니차곡 | 2026-07 | 44 | Charted on 17–36,10 days |
| 우리알지 | 2026-03 | 28 | 27–127 |
| 차곡 가계부 | 2026-03 | 32 | 31–93 |
| 한집가계부 | 2026-10 | 17 | 42–169, charted 6 days |
| 함쓰 | 2020 | 116 | 59–98 |
| 누가 | 2024 | 181 | 76–136 |
| BuBoo | 2019 | 4,591 | 129–197 |
Above them sit the veteran single-user budgeting apps: 편한가계부 with 87k ratings, ranking 5 to 10 in Top Grossing, and 위플가계부 with 217k. They can be shared, but only by logging into one account, and users on Blind complain that you 「can't tell who entered what」. Above those are banks and big fintech players: 뱅크샐러드 and 토스 auto-sync cards for budgeting, and KakaoBank's joint account covers part of the need too.
한집가계부 sits in the lower-middle of the shared-budget tier. Its 「two people」 design is thoughtful, but sharing isn't unique to it: 초록가계부 and 머니차곡 also offer it, and they rank more consistently.
Two moves worth copying
Change the paid unit from 「one person」 to 「a pair of people」. A similar app, 누가, says in its description that 「ad removal only applies to your own account, so people who share it won't lose the ad-free experience.」 한집가계부 does the opposite: one person pays, and both get unlocked. For products that naturally involve two or more people (shared calendars, shopping lists, parenting logs, pet care, wedding planning), this is the cheapest conversion design. The buyer is paying for 「the other person can use it too.」 Among the monthly, yearly and lifetime tiers, the lifetime ₩39,000 is roughly 2.6 years of the annual fee, which suits a one-time push up the charts.
Name a group in casual language instead of pitching a product. 「Anyone newly married still hasn't found a good budgeting app?」 works far better than 「a great shared budgeting app.」 On reply-driven platforms like Threads, a question is a hook. Add 1 indie developers boosting each other, and the first users cost almost nothing.
If it were you
Verdict: There are lessons, but chasing this product isn't worth it. The Korean couple-budgeting slot is already packed, and this app hasn't broken out of it either. What's worth taking is the 「one person pays, two get Pro」 pricing and how it cold-started on Threads, not the product itself.
Who it's for: Indie developers already building or planning a 「two people use it together」 product (shared lists, wedding planning, parenting, pets, roommate expense splitting) who want a ready-made pricing and cold-start template. Or developers in a smaller-language market with few budgeting apps and clear demand for partner sharing (e.g., Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian; I haven't verified whether slots are open), who are willing to count how many similar apps are in that store themselves.
Who it's not for: Anyone wanting to build another shared budgeting app in Korea (about 2026 new ones launched in 25 year, and the top spots are far more stable); anyone hoping to make big money from budgeting subscriptions (free bank-linked budgeting from big players caps the ceiling); and anyone treating a small country's category Top Grossing rank as evidence of revenue.
How to build it: If you enter a different market, first search the App Store in the local language for 「shared / couple / married budget.」 Only build if there are fewer than ten similar apps, and the top ones have stopped updating or only allow shared logins. Build around 「two people living together」: each person records their own spending but can see who logged what, settle splits proportionally, track shared net worth, plan separate budgets, and import data from other apps. Copy the pricing directly: a 7-day trial, one person pays for two Pro seats, and monthly / yearly / lifetime tiers.
How to get users: A month before launch, open an account on Threads or the local equivalent and use casual questions to name the audience (newlyweds, people who just moved in together, one iPhone user and one Android user). Join local indie developer circles and boost each other. Ship every piece of user feedback within a few days, then post 「you asked, I built it.」
When to move: There's no rush, since this is a playbook, not a time-limited window. But if you're already building a two-person product, lock in the pricing design early. Changing the paid unit later is much harder than setting it at the start.
What would prove this read wrong: If 한집가계부 climbs to over 100 ratings and holds a spot in the top 30 of Finance Top Grossing before year-end, it would mean 「one person pays, two get Pro」 converts even in a crowded category, and the playbook is worth more than I think. Conversely, if the market you're considering already has several similar apps with separate accounts and split settlement, don't build it.

Bottom line
It hasn't really "broken out." It's just that the bar for charting in Korea's finance category is low, and a 1-person-developed budgeting app launched only 1 months ago, making a few sales, was enough to squeeze into the top 40. It relied on the developer posting on Threads / Instagram about newlywed and couple topics and within the "1인개발" (1-person dev) circle, plus a pricing design of "7 days of Pro free + one person pays and both are Pro (짝꿍 1+1)," and a new version every few days based on user feedback. Scale: 17 iOS ratings, 100+ Android downloads, 160 Threads followers.

Source: appstore library, app_day. Charted only in Korea; none of the other 114 storefronts placed it.
- The ranking swings a lot (42 → 169 → 44). That pattern fits 「a sale or two on a given day (likely the ₩39,000 lifetime tier) and then it drops the next day」, which doesn't show sustained revenue.
- The bar on the same chart: 11-06 In Korea's Finance Top Grossing, #40 is Woni, #60 is 카네 (81 ratings), and #100 is 고정지출 캘린더 (appstore library, v_chart). In other words, between ranks 40 and 100 on that chart, daily revenue is probably just a few subscriptions.
- Same-category comparison (Korea Finance Top Grossing, best/worst rank from 10-28 to 11-06, appstore library):
- 머니차곡 (launched 2026-07, 44 ratings): charted 17 / 36,10 days, consistently on the chart
- 초록가계부 (2025-01,449 ratings): 11 / 21
- 우리알지 (2026-03,28 ratings): 27 / 127
- 차곡 가계부 (2026-03,32 ratings): 31 / 93
- 한집가계부: 42 / 169, charted only 6 days
- 함쓰 (2020,116 ratings): 59 / 98
- 누가 (2024,181 ratings): 76 / 136
- BuBoo (2019,4,591 ratings): 129 / 197
Bottom line: in the shared-budgeting category it's lower-middle, well behind 머니차곡 and 초록가계부. The earlier recall scoring claim that 「small download counts can still make the charts, so conversion is strong」 was an illusion created by this chart's low bar.
- Growth: iOS rating went from 14 ratings on 10-30 to 17 (+3); the Android store shows 100+ downloads (Google Play listing, 11-06); every review is 5 stars, all from Korea.
- The developer posted on Threads: "처음 배포할때 100위 정도 한게 다였는데,, 이번에 올라갔어" ("When I first shipped it, it only reached about #100, this time it went up"; threads.com/@hanjip_budget/post/DfO9kJsmQIY). He also reshared a post saying "finally got the first paid sale... I was doing free promotion and someone paid, is that organic traffic?" (DfGBlR5Ew9k, 10-29). That lines up with "first trickle of paid sales starting late October"; whether he wrote the original post himself is unverified.
2. Competitors
The Korean 「couple / married shared budgeting」 category is extremely crowded. The App Store library has over 35 budgeting apps with 공유/공동/커플/부부/함께 in their names. About 2026 launched in the past 25 years (위트리, 마주, 듀엣, 위디, 한지갑, 오트가계부, 잘씀, 가계부부, BooKoo, 투게더가계부…), and most have only 0~10 ratings.
- Veteran general budgeting apps: 편한가계부 (87,413 ratings, Finance Top Grossing ranks 5~10) and 위플가계부 (217,292 ratings), both mainly single-user. A Blind user complained that 「편한가계부 can only be shared by logging into one account, so you can't tell who entered what」 (teamblind.com, 「What shared budgeting app do couples use?」).
- Veteran shared budgeting apps: BuBoo (2019,4,591), 함쓰 (2020), Shareroo (overseas, claims 1M couples), 누가 (2024, developed by a married couple), and Manebo.
- Newer players from the past 2025-26 years: 초록가계부, 머니차곡, 차곡, 우리알지, all ranking higher than it.
- Big players already offer: 뱅크샐러드 and 토스 auto-sync bank cards for budgeting. KakaoBank's 모임통장 (joint account) also covers part of the need.
3. Growth tactics (with evidence)
- The 1-person developer identity and "build in public" on Threads: account @hanjip_budget, 160 followers, bio reads "7 days of Pro free! With my partner 1+1 (🍎🤖)." He posts under the #1인개발 #가계부추천 tags, and 10-28 posted mutual-boost threads like "Does anyone have a 1-person-developed app doing free promotion? Drop it in the comments and I'll check it out." One comment reads "I installed it after seeing the developer's promo post, and as a fellow developer...", showing some users came from the developer circle's mutual support.
- Short videos on Threads / Instagram, calling out the target audience directly: "Anyone here with an iPhone-Galaxy couple? Try tracking expenses together" and "Newlyweds who still haven't settled on a budget app?" Instagram reel De_nD2BhXoH was teased before launch ("Coming soon to the App Store"). View counts are small, tens to hundreds per post.
- Found on SNS: 10-10 reviews say "sns에서 우연히 보고 앱 설치" (saw it by chance on SNS and installed it).
- Free trial + two-person 1+1: one person invites a partner and both phones get it; one person pays and both get Pro.
- User migration: supports importing Excel files from other budgeting apps. Reviews include "가계부 유목민……기존 앱이 무거워서 이주중" (budget-app nomad… the old app was too heavy, so I'm moving over) and "공동가계부 10개 넘게 써봤는데 제일 마음에" (tried more than 10 shared budget apps, and this one is my favorite).
- No ad spend found: the metaads library has no advertiser record for it (note: the ad library only tracks listed products, so no record doesn't mean no spend). X has no mentions of it, and no media coverage was found.
4. Differentiation
- One payment, two Pro accounts. A similar app clearly states in its description: "Ad removal only applies to your own account; people you share with still see ads." Treating "two people" as the payment unit is its clearest difference, and likely the source of the few conversions.
- Features designed around two people sharing a life: spending tracked per card, monthly settlement split by ratio, installment payments, automatic recurring expenses, shared asset/net worth changes (savings, deposits, investments, loans, maturity dates), and separate budgets for trips, moves, and a newlywed home. More tailored to real newlywed needs than an app that only offers a "shared ledger."
- Cross-platform: iOS and Android, and it explicitly targets "iPhone-Galaxy couples." Galaxy has a high share of Korean users, so couples with different phones are common.
- Fast iteration, the dev replies personally: 10-30 reached 1.4.0,11-05 within 1.5.2, with releases every 3~4 days. User requests (installment display, monthly recurring fixed expenses, sorting by amount, secondary categories) shipped within days, and reviews mention this.
- Light and good-looking: reviews repeatedly say "light" (가볍고), "beautiful" (예쁩니다), and "intuitive" (직관적).
These differences explain why it earned perfect ratings and converted a handful of payments. But "two-person sharing + settlement" isn't unique to it: 초록가계부 and 머니차곡 also have sharing features, and rank higher. Differentiation kept a small group of users, but isn't enough to lead the category.
5. Visibility
Few people know about it yet. No public revenue (not on TrustMRR; the dev has only posted a "first payment"), no media or big-account coverage, 160 Threads followers, and 100+ Android downloads.
6. What to borrow
- Change the payment unit from "one person" to "one household / one couple": one person pays, both unlock. The invite code pulls the partner in, so one download naturally becomes two installs.
- Calling out the audience with casual Korean "~있어?" (anyone who... here?) on Korean Threads, plus hashtags like #1인개발 for a mutual-support circle, is the cheapest cold-start method for a 1 indie dev.
- On a small country's category grossing chart, a few one-time purchases can push you into the top 50. If you want visibility through charts, this is a cheap entry point, but don't treat it as a revenue signal.
- Monthly / yearly / lifetime pricing: the lifetime price of ₩39,000 is roughly 2.6 years of the annual fee, which makes one-time payback easy.
7. Still unclear
- Actual paid orders and retention: chart positions jump around too much; estimated 0~several orders per day, unverified.
- Android revenue and download curves: the googleplay library does not index this app.
- Can users of the developer's other 4 apps (주차어디, CleanMyPhotos, PRBit, SpotQR) be redirected here? Ratings are very low, so probably not much help.
- Whether Apple Search Ads were run: no evidence found.
