# "22 rubles deducted 20, 2 rubles left and can't be cleared": the #6 "balance wipe" app on the Russian App Store turns out to be a front for a gift card shop

**What it is** A balance-clearing utility on the Russian App Store: you enter your balance, it calculates a set of in-app purchases for you to spend it down, wrapped in a space-cat idle game. The app also carries gift card prices and promo codes for the Turkish store of its parent company, icloudpayment.ru.

**Why it took off** After the Russian carrier April stopped billing App Store purchases to phone bills, many users switched to the Turkish store, which requires a zero balance. Russian-store utilities have a low Top Grossing bar, and 3 ratings were enough to reach #48. Lima's own numbers are small; it relies on traffic from its parent company's blog.

The tactic is worth learning: find the step users must take right after a platform rule change, ship a free utility app within weeks, use your own tutorial blog to drive traffic, then move people in the app to the business where you actually sell.

Lima is a small utility on the Russian App Store that spends the leftover money in your Apple ID so you can switch to the Turkish store. It has 3 ratings, yet for ten days it moved between #24 and #98 on the Russian Utilities Top Grossing chart. It didn't get there on its own: a platform event created the category, and it was the 6rd app to crowd in. Behind it is an online shop selling Turkish-store gift cards, and the app is the shop's storefront.

### A user with only 2 rubles left

In Nov 3, someone left Lima a one-star review titled with one word, "scam":

A more direct one from Oct 23: "Now I have only 1 rubles left, and you tell me to go contact Apple support. Are you serious? I could have done that without you." (Russian App Store review)

These two reviews sum up the business: users aren't here to buy anything. They're here to bring the balance to zero. The app can spend most of it for them, but the last few rubles can't be spent by anyone.

### Why Russians suddenly need to "clear" their balance

In Apr 2026 1, Russian carriers shut down the channel for paying the App Store with phone credit. MTS and Beeline had sent SMS notices earlier (RBC, Mar 30). After that, Russian Apple IDs had almost no way to top up locally, so many users switched their accounts to the Turkish store and bought Turkish gift cards to add funds (vc.ru and iguides.ru both covered this wave of store switching).

Clearing the balance became a mandatory step for the wave of Russian-store users switching regions.

How it works: you enter your balance yourself, and Lima calculates a set of its own consumable in-app purchases, shows you how much each one costs and roughly what's left after, and you confirm them one by one in Apple's popup. Each purchase levels up a space cat named Люма and unlocks outfits, and a home-screen widget shows its level.

The space-cat wrapper isn't meant for users to play with. Apple is unlikely to approve a "spend your money for you" service, but it will approve game items, so each in-app purchase is nominally for the cat's stardust and clothes (inferred).

The developer is MAKSIM VOLOSHINSKII. It was published in 2026 Sep 23, is free to download, and the current version is 1.0.5 (Oct 25). The developer's other small Russian-language apps include a calorie log, a diary, a habit tracker, an AI mood journal and an AI story app; the most-rated of them has only 24 ratings (iTunes, 11-06).

### What its relationship is to the gift-card shop

On Sep 27, icloudpayment.ru published a blog post, "How to Zero Out Your Apple ID Balance to Switch Regions," whose first line says "our app Lima can help you…", and the full text includes 3 App Store links. The site's homepage also reads "Zero out your ruble balance with our app Lima."

So Lima is the gift-card shop's own tool. Whether the developer and the shop owner are the same person hasn't been verified.

The funnel is smooth: user wants to switch regions → searches "how to zero out" → reads the gift-card shop's blog → downloads Lima to clear the balance → switches to the Turkish store → needs to top up → the app already shows Turkish-store gift-card prices and a promo code. In-app purchases collect the small change users were going to waste anyway; the bigger prize is pulling that person back to the webshop to buy a card at the exact moment they switch regions.

Getting into the top 50 of the Russian "Utilities" Top Grossing chart with just 3 ratings shows that the bar for that chart is low, not that Lima earned much. Apple doesn't publish downloads or revenue, but the rating count points to very small volume.

The app that actually caught this wave was Zero Balance: it launched 12 days after the carrier stopped billing, and in May appleinsider.ru's "how to zero out" tutorial its link carried a paid ad-placement tag, while several vc.ru sponsored posts also promoted it. Balance Cleaner works down to the kopeck and can write the request to Apple support for you; Last Cent has its own website blog and was recommended by another gift-card seller, gift-code.ru. In October a clone appeared that copied Zero Balance's name outright.

Half the reviews across the category call it a "scam," for the same reason: the cheapest in-app purchase is about 15 rubles, so any smaller remainder can't be cleared, and in the end you still have to contact Apple support.

### Where users come from

**One-line verdict** : building another zero-balance app in the Russian store isn't worth it, 7 are already in it and the top spots are far ahead. What's worth taking is the model behind Lima: a selling business paired with a free utility app.

**Who it suits** : people already selling something (gift cards, top-ups, subscription resale, migration services) who want to catch customers at the moment they "must do one step"; and people who watch platform rule changes and can ship a small utility within a few weeks.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to earn in-app purchase money from a zero-balance app itself. Unclearable remainders are this category's dead end, and one-star "scam" reviews are the norm; these apps also risk removal under Apple's "duplicate app" or "in-app purchase use" rules (inferred).
