# How much does it cost for two people to eat for a week at Mercadona? A 435-follower side account asked it for a French app and got 380k views

**What it is** A weekly meal-planning app: enter how many people you're feeding, which supermarket you shop at, and what you want to spend in a week. It plans the week's dinners and gives you a shopping list with prices. You pay upfront (weekly subscription €4.99).

**Why it took off** The French leader Jow doesn't build menus around a budget, so that gap was open. Then a batch of TikTok side accounts whose bios only had a download link posted "Is it possible at Mercadona?" and got 388k views. Spain's weekly ratings went from 13 to 131.

**B** **How you could follow** Don't compete in French, Spanish, or German. Pick a language where nobody is doing local supermarket prices yet (Polish or Romanian, for example), get the prices accurate, plan lunch and dinner, and launch before mid-December. Then copy its format: run a batch of side accounts posting "€X for a week at [supermarket]" videos.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and people are paying, but the template has been publicly reported, every major language has a dozen clones, and the product has no moat. A free copycat would show up within three weeks. What's left is getting in first in smaller languages and making the prices accurate. Almost nobody knows about it yet

Yuma is a French weekly meal-planning app that launched on Sep 15. You enter how many people you're feeding, which supermarket you shop at, and what you want to spend in a week. It plans the week's dinners, then gives you a shopping list priced at that supermarket, and you pay upfront. It ranks #1 and #2 in the food category in France and Belgium, and its Spanish ratings grew tenfold within a week. The US has already validated what it does, and the playbook is ready-made. Below: what's driving it, what's still open, and whether you should follow.

### A video asking "is this even possible?"

On Oct 2026 28, a Spanish TikTok account called @maffefood posted a 40-second video with a one-line title: "¿Crees que es posibleeee en #mercadona??" (Do you think it's possible at Mercadona??). The account had only about 400 followers at the time. Its bio contained nothing but an App Store link, which pointed to Yuma.

By Nov 6, the video had 388k views, 22k likes, and 3,800 shares. The comments weren't discussing the app. People were posting their own grocery bills. The most-liked comment (1,550 likes) said "lol I'm at €40 a month, game on." The second said "the two of us spend €100 a month 🥺." Others read "my daughter and I, €230 a week" and "my mom feeds 6 people on €60." A single hook got several hundred people to volunteer their budgets, and that's what made the video work.

Before this, Yuma had 8 ratings in the Spanish App Store (10-28). In Oct, it got 31 13, in Nov 1 33, and in Nov 6 131 (daily rating counts for the Spain App Store).

### What it actually is

The App Store description is blunt: "What's for dinner this week? Yuma plans it for you." You tell it who you're cooking for, where you shop, what you like, what you avoid, and what you want to spend. A few minutes later you get Monday through Sunday dinners and a shopping list that's already priced and sorted by aisle. Don't like a dish? Swap it for three alternatives at the same budget. The fine print on the store page also says the menus, recipes, and dish images are AI-generated, and the prices are "estimates from our own catalog" that may differ at checkout.

The developer, Adrien Long, runs it as a personal account, and the studio is called Nolca (their LinkedIn lists Cape Town). The app supports 11 languages. In France it's "Menus de la semaine" (this week's menus), in Germany "Essensplaner & Rezepte", and in Italy "Menù settimanale". Each storefront uses the term locals actually search for. The Google Play version launched in Oct 18, and by Nov 6 it had 3,638 installs, 3,516 of them in the last 7 days.

### How much it grew

| | 10-28 | 11-06 | Charts (11-06) |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-storefront ratings | 351 | 689 | Charting in 11 storefronts' food categories |
| France | 319 | 500 | Food category: #2 Top Free, #2–3 Top Grossing; overall: #61 Top Free, #147 Top Grossing |
| Spain | 8 | 131 | Food category: #4 Top Grossing; overall: #199 Top Free |
| Belgium | 10 | 22 | Food category: #1 in both Top Free and Top Grossing; overall: #81 Top Grossing |

Across all storefronts, daily new ratings grew from 10-29 2 to 11-06 77 (daily App Store data). The France average is 4.7 (512 reviews).

The 319 French ratings came before 10-28. I couldn't trace where the early volume came from: I couldn't find Yuma videos on TikTok searched in French, so it may have come from Instagram, Meta ads, or earlier French videos (unverified). The Spain wave lines up in time with the video above (inference, high confidence).

### Where the money comes from

A hard paywall. You fill in the questionnaire, then have to subscribe before you can see any menus: weekly €4.99, monthly €9.99, annual plans from €23.99–€149.99, and only a 3-day free trial (France App Store, 11-06).

Nearly all the negative reviews are about this, and they're very consistent:

> "You build an app to save us money on groceries, and then the app itself costs money, and not cheap." (France, 1 stars, 10-08) "You have to pay the app to save money on groceries. Kind of funny." (France, 1 stars, 10-25) "Paying for this kind of app makes no sense." (Spain, 1 stars, 10-29)

But Belgium's overall Top Grossing rank of #81 and France's #147 show that people are paying despite the complaints. The bar to be #1 in a small country's category chart is low, so discount those rankings accordingly.

Two other complaints are worth noting, because they're the opening for followers:

- **Inaccurate prices** : "The estimates are way off. I get that prices vary by region, but being €23 off is too much." (France, 3 stars, 11-03)

- **Dinner only** : "Just one meal a day, even on weekends... cheap groceries, sure, but the prices are underestimated too, so it's not reliable." (France, 1 stars, 10-03); "At least plan lunch and dinner" (France, 5 stars, 10-05).

Interestingly, starting in Nov 3, @maffefood's video titles switched to "¿¿¿Almuerzos y cenas???" (Lunch and dinner???). The 11-04 one got 96k views. Meanwhile the French App Store description (11-06) still only mentions dinner. Whether the app already added lunch or the video shouted it first, I haven't verified.

### Where the volume came from

**A batch of TikTok accounts, at least some of them paid partnerships.** @maffefood posted two or three videos a day starting in Oct 25, all with the same title pattern and a supermarket name swapped in: "55€ for TWO people at #carrefour" (13k views), "¿Será posible en el #elcorteingles", "Are you team #lidl or team #mercadona?". Most got only a thousand or two views. One viral hit is enough.

It's not the only account. @lorena.mealplanning (11 followers, bio reads "YUMA APP 📱 DM ME") posted one in 11-04 that opens with the label "📢 PUBLICIDAD | Colaboración con Yuma" (Ad | Partnership with Yuma). The English account @yolanabites posted dozens of "OMG!!! Download Yuma" videos in late October, each getting tens to hundreds of views, which looks like a test of the English market. The German @heni.foodie is labeled "Ads #yuma".

This playbook didn't originate with Yuma. Its prototype is the US app TapCook: Budget Meal Plans, launched in July, which in August changed to "plan a week of dinners on a budget, with the grocery list priced for the store you shop at," nearly word for word the same pitch as Yuma. Social Growth Engineers wrote that TapCook reached $50K MRR in three months, using "budget challenges + store names as hooks, with lots of small creator accounts adding up to over 5M views." TapCook has 11-06 ratings in the US store and ranks #3–4 in the food category's Top Grossing chart (6,707 ratings). Yuma launched 9-15 later and swapped Walmart and Aldi for Leclerc, Carrefour, Mercadona, and Lidl. (Whether the two are directly connected is unknown; the pitch and timing match, which is inference.)

**Store search is probably helping too (inference).** The French name "Menus de la semaine" is the phrase French users actually search for. The copycat Pani, which launched in Oct 8, even copied the subtitle word for word.

### Why France is still open

The category leader in France is Jow, with 48.6k ratings in the French store and 6.37M installs on Google Play. But Jow is free recipes plus one-tap grocery ordering. It earns from supermarket commissions, doesn't build a menu around a "€X a week" budget, and doesn't show prices. In July it released an AI version, Jowzi, which has only 206 ratings in the French store. Marmiton, HelloFresh, and Cookidoo are all recipe or meal-kit services, and none of them does budgeting.

There's demand: French budget blogger Bravo Le Rat, with 156k followers, is selling "Les Menus du Rat" on Stan for 25.9 € a pop: "answer 7 questions and get a weekly menu plus a shopping list with prices." The blogger is selling this themselves, which shows French budget shoppers will pay for it.

### Who it's competing with

This is a whole wave of "AI budget weekly meal planners" from 2026, with several in every language:

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TapCook | US | 2026-07 | US store 6,707 ratings; Android 66k installs | Prototype, revenue publicly reported |
| Pani : Menus de la semaine | France | 2026-10-08 | France store 21 ratings | Subtitle copied word for word, pitched as free, with lunch and dinner both planned, aimed directly at Yuma's two 1-star reviews |
| Whipp / Piatto / CestaChef | Spanish | 2026-06 to 09 | Whipp Spain 627, Piatto Spain 336 | Mostly launched before Yuma |
| Mealbird | Multilingual | 2026-08 | Mexico 1,552; Netherlands 472 | Covers every language |
| mise / Disha / Mernivo / IKTI / MealBudget | German-speaking | 2026-06 to 10 | mise Germany 1,788, the rest in single digits | Searching "Essensplaner Budget" in the German store, 7 of the top 8 results are from this year |
| Magic Meal / Planimi / Solaia etc. | French | 2026 | Mostly not charted | TikTok has the same "pick Lidl + enter budget" videos |

(The German-speaking row comes from App Store German-store search, 11-06.)

There's also a bigger rival in the comments: under that 388k-view video, the top comment with 124 likes reads "guys, ChatGPT can do the same thing for free 😂".

### If it were you

**B.** Worth testing, but don't expect to win on the product. This is a published template: a US subscription app that worked, translated into another language and tied to local supermarkets, with a batch of TikTok alt accounts asking "can X euros feed you for a week at [supermarket]". Yuma was the first to execute this well in French, and the same play already has a dozen-plus clones in German and Spanish. If you want in, you have two options: get into a language nobody is seriously working yet, or do better what Yuma gets wrong (accurate prices, lunch and dinner both planned).

**Who it suits** : a solo founder or small team, 1–2 people, who will batch-produce TikTok videos and knows how to find or run dozens of alt accounts; a native speaker or resident of a market that's still empty. 11-06 On the App Store, markets like Poland and Romania have no local team doing a competitor with local supermarket prices. The only one is Mealbird, a generic version covering every language (2,003 ratings in its Romania store). A Spanish-store one-star review from 5 is practically begging Yuma to "add Romania, so I can use the prices and supermarkets from my country" (inferred that these markets are still open; I only checked store search, not TikTok).

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone aiming to fight in French, Spanish, English or German (those are crowded and have no technical moat, so a copycat can ship in a week or two); anyone who can't make short-form video or is counting on organic store traffic; anyone who can't get real local supermarket prices, since inaccurate prices turn straight into one-star reviews.

**How to build it** : ship iOS first. Questionnaire → a week of meals sorted by budget → a shopping list grouped by supermarket aisle with estimated prices. Hard paywall plus a weekly subscription, priced like Yuma (4.99 € a week, 3-day trial). On top of Yuma, add two things: plan both lunch and dinner, and use real prices from local supermarkets (even just one or two chains), with a note on the page saying how far off the estimate might be. Name the app with the exact word locals search for.

**How to get users** : follow @maffefood's approach. The hook is a question plus a supermarket name plus a number ("two people, 55 € at Carrefour for a week?"), so the comments argue about the budget for you. Open lots of new accounts, each with only a download link in the bio, post two or three a day, swap in supermarket names and headcounts. Most will get only a thousand or two views; wait for one to hit. Paid partnerships get labeled as ads, per the rules.

**Timing** : launch and start posting before mid-December. This template took two months to go from the US to French, and the next language will be faster. Copycats like Pani, which is free, showed up three weeks after Yuma launched. January is also the "save money in the new year" season, a good fit.

**Signs you've misread it** : ① Yuma's daily new ratings in France fall back to single digits before late November and its Food top-grossing rank drops out of the top 10, meaning UGC volume stopped and paying users aren't staying; ② in the language you want, two or three competitors with 100+ ratings appear in the store before December; ③ a free version like Pani pushes Yuma out of the category chart in France, meaning the hard paywall can't hold in this category; ④ your alt accounts post 50 videos in a row and none get past 50k views, meaning the hook doesn't work in that language.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **TikTok paid UGC burner-account network** : @maffefood (435 followers, bio links only to Yuma) 10-28 one video with 388K views, 11-04 one with 92K; @lorena.mealplanning tagged "PUBLICIDAD | Colaboración con Yuma"; @yolanabites posted dozens of English "Download Yuma" videos; @heni.foodie posted German ads. The es rating jumped to 11-01 and lines up with the timing of these videos

- Inferred **Store search (the name is literally "Menus de la semaine") + category chart exposure** : the name matches what French users search for; free in FR Food & Drink ranked #1–#2; the copycat Pani copied this exact subtitle.

- Inferred **Early French sources (Instagram, Meta ads, or French UGC)** : before 10-28, FR already had 319 ratings, and no French Yuma videos turned up on TikTok; no records in the metaads / tiktokads libraries.

## Why Yuma: Menus de la semaine (id6811329112) worked

**In one line** : Yuma is the **French / Spanish localization** of TapCook, the US hit that plans a week of dinners by budget and prices the shopping list at the supermarket you actually go to. It worked for two reasons. First, nobody had done this properly in France or Spain, with local supermarket prices (France's established Jow does recipes plus online ordering, not budget planning). Second, a **paid UGC alt-account network on TikTok** : dozens of videos like "two people, 55 € a week at Mercadona / Lidl / Carrefour?", posted from accounts with a few dozen to a few hundred followers, with the Yuma download link right in the bio, some tagged "PUBLICIDAD | Colaboración con Yuma". The money comes from a hard paywall: you pay before you get in (4.99 € a week, only a 3-day trial). The product itself has no moat, and 2026 years on, a dozen-plus apps are running the same play.

Regions checked: the appstore library scanned every store. It charted in Food & Drink in 11 stores (2026-11-06). Ratings are concentrated in FR 500, ES 131, BE 22, CA 13, CH 9, US 9; every other store has fewer than 10.

### 2. Competitors

**The idea itself isn't new. 2026 saw a wave of "AI budget weekly menu" apps** :

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Yuma differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **TapCook: Budget Meal Plans** (TestMaxx) | iOS / Android | iOS 2026-07-17 (08-22 changed to budget weekly menus); Android 2026-09-21 | US: 6707 ratings, +7 over the last 1066 days, US Food & Drink Top Grossing #3–4; Android 66k installs (appstore / googleplay libraries, 11-06); Social Growth Engineers reported $50K MRR, 100k downloads | **Prototype** . It targets the US (Walmart / Aldi); Yuma looks like its French and Spanish version (inferred) |
| **Jow** (France) | iOS / Android | 2018 | fr 48.6k ratings; Android 6.37M installs | France's leader: recipes + one-tap online grocery ordering, free, earns through supermarket commissions; doesn't sort by budget or show prices. 2026-07 released an AI version, **Jowzi** (fr 206 ratings; Android 77k installs) |
| **Pani : Menus de la semaine** (ERWAN LE VEUZIT) | iOS | 2026-10-08 | fr 21 ratings, Food & Drink Top Free #16–41 | **Copycat** : identical subtitle, pitched as "free" with both lunch and dinner planning, directly answering two complaints in Yuma's reviews (it's paid, and it only plans dinners). TikTok @monpani_app uses the same playbook |

| HelloFresh / Cookidoo / Marmiton | iOS | Old | HelloFresh fr 38k, Cookidoo 260k, Marmiton 139k | Recipes / meal kits, no budget planning |

### 3. Growth tactics

**TikTok paid UGC sock-puppet matrix (confirmed)** . Searching "yuma" plus supermarket / menu terms on TikHub (2026-11-06):

- **@maffefood** (Spanish, 435 followers, 36 videos, bio links only to Yuma's App Store page): posting almost daily since 10-25, titles all "Mercadona / Lidl / Carrefour: a week for two people for X euros?"

There's also a second account, @ahorraconlorena, whose videos all carry #ad, showing paid partnerships.

- **@yolanabites** (English, 86 followers, bio links to Yuma): from 10-19 to 10-26 posted dozens of "OMG!!! Download Yuma" videos, each with 60–550 views, apparently testing the English market.

- @heni.foodie (German, "Lidlll??? … Ads #yuma"), @callie.eats3, @bangel434 (English), @rosapc8274 (Spanish).

- Same playbook as TapCook: "supermarket name + budget challenge" as the hook, with many new accounts posting together. When one video hits, traffic follows. Social Growth Engineers, writing about TapCook, said: "a budget challenge and a supermarket name hook… 5M+ views across small creator accounts".

**Where France's earliest traffic came from: not found** . Searching TikHub for French terms "yuma appli / courses / repas" only turned up the Spanish and English Yuma videos. France's 319 ratings were already there before 10-28. Possibly Instagram Reels, Meta ads, or early French UGC (unverified). The metaads / tiktokads libraries don't list Yuma. (Those libraries only track products on their watchlist, so absence there doesn't mean no ads were run.)

**App Store search (inferred)** : the French name "Menus de la semaine" matches what French users search ("menu de la semaine"), and category charts #1–2 added exposure. The copycat Pani used the same subtitle, showing people are searching for this term.

**Multi-language launch** : 11 languages, Android 10-18 launch, ready to copy the same UGC into German, English and other markets (heni.foodie is already posting in German).

### 4. Why it took off

1. **The template has been validated, and it's being localized** : TapCook ran in the US ($50K MRR, per SGE). Yuma launched 9-15, swapping "US supermarkets" for Leclerc / Carrefour / Mercadona / Lidl, with French and Spanish versions. The timing and selling points match (inferred).

2. **France's leader Jow doesn't touch "budget"** : Jow offers free recipes and online ordering, but won't plan your week for X euros. In 2026, inflation and money-saving were hot topics in France and Spain (budget creators like Bravo Le Rat have 150k followers and sell their own menu PDFs).

3. **The UGC sock-puppet matrix drove traffic directly in Spain** : es ratings went from 4 to 13 in 131 days, matching @maffefood's 388k views in timing.

4. **A hard paywall makes the revenue signal strong** : you pay to install, with a weekly subscription of €3 after a 4.99-day trial. Many reviews complain ("app pour économiser mais payante", "3j d'essai seulement"), but it charts #81 Top Grossing in Belgium and #147 in France, so people are paying. Its category Top Grossing rank of #1 is an easy bar to clear in a small storefront, so discount that.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with Jow, Marmiton and HelloFresh, the difference is that **it first takes your budget, plans a week of dinners, then prices the list at the supermarket you pick** , and it keeps the scope small by planning only dinners. That's probably why it took off in France, where incumbents lacked this feature. But against TapCook, Pani, Whipp, Piatto and Magic Meal from the same wave, it **has no real differentiation** . The race is about who launched in each language first and who has the bigger UGC reach. The product's weak spots are already visible in reviews: inaccurate price estimates ("23 € de différence"), dinners only, and recipes can't be searched by ingredient.

### 6. What others can learn

- "Proven US subscription app → swap language and local supermarkets → reuse the same TikTok UGC hooks" is quick to copy. The window is only a few weeks.

- UGC hook: "Can two people eat for a week on [X] euros at [local supermarket]?" with the app as the answer. Post in bulk from many new accounts, bio with only a download link, some labeled as ads.

- A hard paywall plus a weekly subscription, combined with high-frequency UGC, can quickly push a small storefront (Belgium, Spain) into the category Top Grossing top 1.

- Also watch the risks: free copycats like Pani are already here, and inaccurate pricing could damage reviews.

### 7. Visibility

- No public Yuma revenue found (TrustMRR, X and Indie Hackers searches came up empty). No media coverage. Founder Adrien Long (LinkedIn lists the Nolca studio, based in Cape Town) hasn't been written up by any major account.

- But **this template is public** : TapCook's $50K MRR has already been written up by Social Growth Engineers, and there are over a dozen copies in French and Spanish. Yuma itself isn't well known yet, but the niche is already crowded.

- Copycat: Pani : Menus de la semaine (launched 10-08, identical subtitle, free positioning).

### 8. Still unclear

- Where France's earliest batch (319 ratings before 10-28) came from: Instagram, Meta ads, or French UGC.

- How the UGC is paid for: whether through a platform that pays per view or accounts the developer runs; whether these sock puppets belong to the developer.

- Real conversion, trial-to-paid rate, refund rate, and weekly subscription retention.

- Whether there's a direct link to TapCook (same codebase, outsourced, or same template). For now only the selling points and timing match.
