The Australian price-comparison app ranked #8 on Shopping top-grossing. Its product is nearly identical to the free Zyft: Gated wins with an existing TikTok account and a paywall
What it is An Australian barcode price-comparison app: scan a barcode or search for a product to compare prices across retailers such as supermarkets, pharmacies, electronics and home-improvement stores. It requires a subscription (A$9.99/month or A$39.99/year).
Why it blew up The owner took an Amazon arbitrage TikTok account that ran "stores are pricier than online" content and turned it into an app funnel. October brought about 300k views. Then they charged for something the category gives away for free. The Australian Shopping Top Grossing chart is nearly empty, so a few subscriptions were enough to reach the top 10.
CHow you could copy it Don't build another Australian price-comparison app. If you run a niche content account, take the playbook: turn the action you keep demonstrating on video into a paid tool for your own audience. Target small-country category charts with low barriers to entry, and give a few free uses before the paywall.

Launched Oct 8, Gated is an Australian barcode price-comparison app that hit the top 10 of the Australian App Store Shopping Top Grossing chart within a month, peaking at #6. Functionally it is a clone of Zyft, four years late and slower. It charted thanks to three things: the founder was already selling an Amazon retail arbitrage course and had a TikTok account that filmed "stores charge more than online" content; Oct 26 put a hard paywall on a category where everyone else is free; and the bar for the Australian shopping chart is surprisingly low. Below, how much each of the three mattered, and which one you can actually take away.
A 24-second Coles video
In Oct 5, three days before the app went live, TikTok account @gatedprice posted a 24-second video captioned only "Scan and save #coles #ripoff." It shows someone in front of a Coles shelf scanning a product's barcode, and the phone shows a cheaper price elsewhere. By Nov 6 it had 121k views and 119 comments (TikTok post page, 11-06).
The comments basically predict the app's whole situation. The most-liked comment is a dig: "What about the one next to it that's $4.5, lol", meaning the shelf sticker already shows the discount. The second most-liked: "Make an Apple version, nobody uses Android." Then a run of "what's this app called," "teach us, grandma's here," "downloaded now," "already signed up, waiting for you to launch." Several others make the same point: "Zyft has been doing this for years. I've used it for ages. It's not just supermarkets, it does shoes, appliances, TVs too" and "How is this different from Zyft?"
So the demand is there and people are willing to click. But anyone who knows the space reacts with: there's already a free one.
What it is
The first line of the store page: "Gated helps you find the best price on the things you buy – in seconds." Scan a barcode or search a product name to compare prices across Woolworths, Coles, Chemist Warehouse, JB Hi-Fi, Big W, Harvey Norman, Bunnings, Amazon AU and others. Also weekly specials, price-drop alerts, and a "you saved" tally. No sign-up or login.
The developer, Gated Market Pty Ltd, has only this one app, on both iOS and Android.
The money model changed partway through. It started free, earning commissions on shopping links. The description still says: "Gated is free and earns a commission on some links… As an Amazon Associate." In Oct 26, the 1.3.0 version switched to Gated Pro: A$9.99 a month or A$39.99 a year, and the core features don't work without a subscription. In Nov 5, the 1.4.0 version backed off a little: "We've turned off the subscription page and given you 5 free scans."
How it climbed the charts
| 10-28 | 10-29 to 10-31 | 11-02 | 11-04 | 11-05 | 11-06 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia Shopping Top Grossing | #12 | #6 | #8 | #19 | #18 | #8 |
| iOS rating count (cumulative) | 10 | 12 | 14 | 14 | 14 | 14 |
(App Store Australia, 10-28 to 11-06. No chart data before 10-28. It charted in no other country.)
The two timelines line up. The paywall went live on 10-26, and two days later the app was charting at #12 on Top Grossing. 10-29 One reviewer left a one-star rating: "Came in because of all the hype, and it's a paid app with no free trial. No way to tell if it actually works." Over the next few days the ranking slid, 11-04 dropping to #19. 11-05 then added "5 free scans," and 11-06 climbed back to #8.
Scale check: iOS has 14 ratings in total, and only 2 more in 7 days. On Google Play, installs are 10-29, and that's 695,11-06 and 1,098 (Google Play, 11-06). A number this size makes the top 10 only because the chart is so empty: on the same day, #19 Tallo had just 4 ratings, and #22 Dete had 36. The revenue behind #8 on the AU shopping Top Grossing chart is an inference, somewhere under a few hundred AUD a day, and can't be verified.
Where users come from
1. A TikTok account repurposed for an app. @gatedprice has 4,503 followers and 632 posts (TikTok, 11-06). From 2025 September to mid-2026, the account posted Amazon selling and retail arbitrage content, like "Big W losing money #amazonfba" and "Made over $2000 here's how." One post, "Did you know anyone can sell on Amazon," got 77k views. In October 2026 the whole account switched to promoting the app, with the bio changed to "Download Our App Today" linking to the app landing page.
In October it posted 45 videos, with about 300K views combined, its best month for views. Besides the one above with 121K views, there's 10-21 one for Bunnings (41K) and 10-01 one for Woolworths (25K). The formula is fixed: film the gap between the in-store price and the online price, add a line like "This is nuts" or "There is no way", tag #coles #woolies #save, and post 2 to 4 videos a day. By November, most single videos were getting only a few hundred to a thousand-plus views, so momentum is fading.
2. Instagram account @gatedprices, 12.2k followers, bio "Download Our APP To Start Saving." It posts the same content as TikTok and has run giveaways.
3. The original business. The landing and terms pages both sit on gatedseller.com.au, a site that originally sold training for Australian Amazon sellers, calling itself "one of Australia's fastest-growing Amazon communities." Its Whop store sells a retail arbitrage course (A$1,000), one-on-one coaching (A$3,500), and a monthly membership. There is also a UK sister site, sellercircle.co.uk. Retail arbitrage means finding goods cheaper in stores and reselling them online, so the app is essentially that internal product-sourcing tool made mass-market, with ready-made video material and an audience.
4. Whether it runs paid ads is unknown. Nothing showed up in the Meta or TikTok ad libraries, but that doesn't mean it isn't advertising. I found no media, X, or Reddit discussion of it. The one-star review's "so much hype" most likely refers to the videos on TikTok and Instagram.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | Compared with Gated |
|---|---|---|
| Zyft | Launched in 2022; 378k Google Play installs, 1,414 iOS ratings in Australia; covered by 7 News; claims to cover 50k+ Australian retailers | Also a scan-to-compare app across all categories, but free, four years older, and broader in coverage. One two-star Gated review says plainly that it's slower than "the other big one." |
| WiseList | Launched in 2019, 1,808 ratings | Shopping list plus supermarket price comparison, free |
| Dete, Tallo, StockUp, TrolleyWise, Pinch, and others | Hobby projects from individual developers since 2025 to 2026, most with a handful to a few dozen ratings | Supermarket comparison only, mostly free |
| Google Lens / Google Shopping, Woolworths and Coles' own apps | Huge | Free, but covers one channel only, or doesn't focus on Australian store prices |
This category is crowded, and nearly all of it is free. Gated's one difference from everyone else is that it charges.
What it actually wins on
- The content is the product demo. Every video shows "scan this, find it's half the price elsewhere." Anyone who watches to the end wants the app, and nothing needs explaining in between.
- The traffic was ready-made. An account already talking about "stores are pricier than online" only had to swap its link from course sales to app downloads. Cold start cost next to nothing.
- Charging in a free category bought the ranking. Everyone else was free, so the chart was empty and a few subscriptions were enough for the top 10. The ranking in turn lent it some credibility.
- But the paywall is where word of mouth leaks. Users arrive from a video, hit the subscription page immediately, and free Zyft sits right next to it. That's what the one-star review, the two-star review, and the run of "how is this different from Zyft" comments on TikTok are all about. It's hard to be optimistic about renewal rates (my inference).
If it were you
The one-line verdict: Don't copy this as an Australian price-comparison app. The category is crowded, free, and already has Zyft. What's worth taking is the playbook: turn the action your content account keeps demonstrating into an app and sell it to your own audience.
Who it suits: Anyone with a niche content account, even a few thousand followers, where the same "action" keeps appearing in your videos: checking prices, counting calories, identifying plants, measuring distances, comparing specs. That action can become a paid tool.
Who it doesn't suit: People with no audience of their own who want to win on the comparison feature itself. Comparison requires pulling data from many retailers and maintaining it constantly, and at small scale you can't beat established free products. Gated itself is already being called slow by users.
How to do it:
- Start by checking which of your (or a creator you could partner with) videos get the most views and which comments most often ask "what app is that?" That's the demand.
- Build the narrowest version that's enough to demo on video.
- Pick a low-barrier category chart: a small country or an obscure category, and check how many ratings the #10 to #20 apps have. A few to a few dozen means very few subscriptions can get you charted.
- Don't put up a blanket paywall like Gated did at first. After the backlash it changed to "turn off the subscription page and give 5 free uses," then added a first-year discount and a cancellation save offer. You can start with that setup from day one.
How to get users: Follow its approach: post 2 to 4 short videos a day, use a fixed opening line plus local supermarket hashtags, and cross-post to TikTok and Instagram. One to two weeks before launch, open a waitlist and turn every "what's this app called" comment into a sign-up.
When to move: Its playbook has no window. You can use it any time. If you really want to do Australian price comparison, wait a month or two and see whether Gated holds a top-20 spot behind its paywall. If it can't hold, it suggests users here won't pay for comparison.
Signs you've read it wrong: (1) Gated drops out of the top 30 on the Australia Shopping Top Grossing chart before December, and TikTok views stay weak. That means the playbook only sustains one launch, and the content account's traffic runs out. (2) Conversely, if its rating count starts growing steadily and it holds the top 10, charging inside a free category can work, and the comparison business itself deserves another look.

Why Gated (iOS 6811743270) made it onto the charts
An Australian price-comparison app: scan a barcode or search to compare prices across Woolworths, Coles, Chemist Warehouse, JB Hi-Fi, Big W, Bunnings, Amazon AU and more. Developer Gated Market Pty Ltd (ABN 76 694 686 185), launched 2026-10-08. Research date 2026-11-06.
Bottom line
It charted because of the distribution, not the product. Functionally it's a late entrant to Zyft (Zyft is free and launched 2022 years earlier), and it's slower with less coverage. Three things stacked up to get it onto the charts:
- The founder already sold an Australian Amazon FBA "retail arbitrage" course and had ready-made TikTok and Instagram accounts plus a content playbook built on "stores are pricier than online", which they redirected to drive app installs;
- In a category where everyone is free, they switched to a hard paywall starting 10-26 (Gated Pro, A$9.99 monthly or A$39.99 yearly);
- The Australian Shopping Top Grossing chart has a very low bar: a little subscription revenue is enough to reach the top 10.
Real scale is small: 14 total ratings on iOS and 1,098 installs on Google Play.
Data (from our library)
- App Store Australia Shopping Top Grossing chart (appstore library chart_rank; the library only has data from 10-28): 10-28 #12 → 10-29 to 10-31 #6 → 11-01 #7 → 11-02 #8 → 11-03 #9 → 11-04 #19 → 11-05 #18 → 11-06 #8. It only sporadically made the Australian Shopping Top Free chart (#91 to #181). It never charted in any other country.
- Ratings count (Australian store): 10-28 was 10 ratings, 11-06 was 14, and in 7 days it only added 2; average rating 4.4.
- Google Play (googleplay library, package com.gatedmarket.app): 10-29 installs 695,11-06 installs 1,098,7 days +403; best rank was #170 on the Australian Shopping Top Free chart.
- Chart threshold benchmark (Australian Shopping Top Grossing 11-06): #19 Tallo has only 4 ratings, #22 Dete only 36; the top spots are parcel tracking, Cameo, SellRaze and ThriftAI. This suggests the revenue needed for #8 on this chart is very low, probably within a few hundred Australian dollars a day (unverified).
- Version timeline (App Store version history):
- Early versions were free and earned commission. The bio still reads "Gated is free and earns a commission on some links… As an Amazon Associate".
- 1.3.0 (10-26) changed to "Gated is now Gated Pro… try it free for 3 days on the monthly plan", a hard paywall. Our library first shows it on the grossing chart in 10-28, which lines up with this change.
- 1.4.0 (11-05) added "5 free scans when you close the subscription page". The reason: 10-29 users gave it 1 stars: "Went to use this after seeing so much hype only to find it's a paid app with no free trail".
- Subscription terms (gatedseller.com.au/terms-and-conditions): monthly A$9.99 with a 7-day trial; yearly A$39.99 with no trial. The core features don't work without a subscription. The terms also mention a first-year discount when you close the subscription page and a retention offer on cancel, a standard hard-paywall-plus-retention playbook.
Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Gated differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zyft | iOS / Android / Chrome / web | 2022-07 | 378k Play installs (googleplay library); 1,414 ratings on the Australian iOS store; covered by 7News and other outlets; claims coverage of 50k+ Australian retailers | Also full-category barcode price comparison, but free, and launched 4 years earlier. Gated's user reviews say it's "slow compared to the other major one" |
| Frugl | iOS / Android / web | Relatively early | Supermarkets only; per the Discount Trolley blog, 2026-11-02 is no longer on the Australian App Store | Supermarkets only, free |
| Dete(Discount Trolley) | iOS | 2026-05 | 36 ratings on the Australian store, #22 on the Shopping Top Grossing chart | Only 7 supermarkets, with in-app purchases |
| Tallo | iOS | 2026-07 | 4 ratings, #19 on the Shopping Top Grossing chart | Supermarkets only, with in-app purchases |
| WiseList | iOS | 2019 | 1,808 ratings | Shopping list plus supermarket price comparison, free |
| StockUp / TrolleyWise / Pinch / Zavvy / Aussie Grocery Price Compare | iOS | 2025–2026 | All under 30 ratings | In 2026 a batch of indie-built supermarket price-comparison apps appeared, all supermarket-only |
| Google Shopping / Google Lens, and the Woolworths and Coles apps' own barcode scanners | Big-company features | Already around | Huge | Free, but only one channel, or not tuned to Australian store prices |
| Cashback apps like ShopBack, CHOICE price tracking | Other | Already around | Big | Cashback or price-drop alerts, not in-store barcode comparison |
Bottom line: this category is crowded and mostly free. Gated has no obvious functional edge; its only real departure from the crowd is charging.
Growth channels
- Owned TikTok account @gatedprice (confirmed)
- 4,503 followers, 632 videos (TikHub, 11-06).
- From 2025-09 to mid-2026, this account posted Amazon FBA and retail arbitrage content, such as "Big w losing money #amazonfba" and "Made over $2000 here's how"; one 2025-10-28 video, "Did you know anyone can sell on Amazon", got 77k views.
- In 2026-10 the whole account was converted to drive app installs: the bio changed to "Download Our App Today" and links to gatedseller.com.au/app.
- October had 45 videos totaling about 297k views, its highest month ever. The top one was 10-05's "Scan and save #coles #ripoff" at 121k views (3 days before launch); next were a 10-21 Bunnings video (41k) and a 10-01 Woolworths video (25k).
- The playbook is consistent: film the price gap between store and online, add "This is nuts / This is crazy", and tag #coles #woolies #save, posting 2 to 4 videos a day. In November, individual videos are mostly around 1k views and trending down.
- Owned Instagram account @gatedprices (confirmed): 12.2k followers, bio "Download Our APP To Start Saving", with the same content as TikTok (including "Found profit at big w" and giveaways).
- Existing business funnel (confirmed): the operator already sold Australian Amazon FBA courses.
- gatedseller.com.au calls itself "one of Australia's fastest-growing Amazon communities", run by founder Ben; the page's student testimonials still carry the old name Seller Circle.
- The Whop store gatedmarket sells Online & Retail Arbitrage PRO (A$1,000), Gated 1 on 1 (A$3,500), and a Member monthly plan; there's also a UK sister site, sellercircle.co.uk.
- Retail arbitrage is itself about finding the gap between store and online prices, so this app is an internal sourcing tool turned into a consumer product, and its content and audience carry over directly.
- Paid ads (unconfirmed): our Meta ad library has no Page for it, but that library only tracks advertisers found through keyword discovery, so absence doesn't prove no spend. The TikTok ad library only has European data. The "so much hype" in user reviews most likely refers to TikTok and Instagram content, based on current evidence.
- Press, X, Reddit (checked, nothing found): x-radar has zero posts in the last 30 days; Jina and Reddit searches found no coverage of it. The 9News story about "a new app that finds supermarket deals" turned up is not about it.
Why it broke out (point by point)
- Built-in traffic. A TikTok and IG account already talking about "stores are pricier than online" and "Big W is losing money" only had to switch its landing page from selling courses to selling the app; October's 300k views came almost entirely from this account (TikHub video data).
- The content and the product are the same thing. Every video demos "scan it, find it half the price," and the people who watch want exactly this app. The path from watching to converting is very short.
- A hard paywall turns a small amount of traffic straight into chart rank. Two days after switching to Gated Pro, our database shows it at #12 on the Australian Shopping Top Grossing chart, then #6 later (appstore database).
- The Australian Shopping Top Grossing chart has a low bar. Tallo with 4 ratings can still reach #19. So a #8 rank doesn't mean big revenue. It only means almost nobody in this category is charging.
- The paywall is hurting retention and reviews. 10-29 has 1-star reviews complaining there's no free trial; its ranks fell to #18 and #19 (11-04, 11-05); after launching "5 free scans" (11-05), 11-06 climbed back to #8.
Differentiation
- Features: all-category scanning plus no login required, nearly overlapping with Zyft, and slower with less coverage (user review quotes). No login is a minor selling point (another review mentions it), but it can't carry differentiation.
- The real differences are two: charging money (similar tools are almost all free), and distribution through "retail arbitrage" content accounts. Those two are why it charted, not the product itself.
- Risk: Zyft is free with similar features, and Gated's users were drawn in by videos. Once users discover a free alternative, renewals will be hard.
What others can borrow
- If you already run a content account, turn the action demoed in your videos into an app, then sell it inside the content account. Cold start costs nothing.
- In a tool category where everyone is free, put up a hard paywall and watch a low-bar category chart (small countries plus categories like Shopping). A few paying users can buy you chart rank and credibility.
- After getting called out for having no trial, they immediately switched to "turn off the paywall and get 5 scans" plus a retention discount, which contained the rating risk.
Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it yet. No media coverage, zero posts on X; no public revenue (no TrustMRR, no founder sharing numbers); iOS has only 14 ratings.
- Copycats: we found no one copying its "paywall price comparison" model specifically. Supermarket price-comparison apps have kept appearing for 2026 years, but they all predate it and most are free.
Still unclear
- Actual revenue and subscriber count. No public basis for converting the #8 Top Grossing rank into revenue.
- Whether it runs Meta or TikTok ads. Our database doesn't cover this, so it remains unknown.
- Download volume during the 10-08 to 10-26 free period. Our database only starts at 10-28.
- How much of the early user base came from FBA course students and communities (Discord or Whop memberships).
