# "You can draw directly on your partner's desktop": a Threads short video with 498k views pushed a Taiwanese couples app onto the grossing chart

**What it is** A couples app where each partner answers questions separately, then the answers are revealed together, plus doodle, photo and sticky-note widgets that can be drawn onto the other person's phone desktop. One subscription is shared by both (NT$320 per month, NT$1,290 per year).

**Why it took off** The founder posted in first person on Taiwan's Threads for a week, "I built an app and it's finally live". One post, a short video of just "draw a stroke and it appears on their desktop", got 498k views and 7,600 shares. It targets long-distance couples, with paired use pulling people in.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build yet another, fuller couples app. Copy its launch play: find a visual that can be filmed in ten seconds, then post first-person from the founder's account for a week. Apply it to long-distance and cross-border couples or deep question banks, which it does poorly, or bring it to markets that also buy "small locally made apps".

C grade: couples apps are already crowded by SumOne, Between, Widgetable, Paired and others. Closer has no original features, and its hook "draw on their desktop" was surpassed within a month by Wiggle Together. Estimated monthly revenue is only a few thousand USD. The lesson worth taking is the zero-budget Threads launch tactic; following the category itself isn't worth much. Buzz in niche circles

A Taiwanese indie developer built a couples app called Closer: two people each answer questions, then reveal answers together, and you can also draw, attach photos and leave sticky notes on the other person's phone desktop. In the first two weeks after launch, he posted a few "I built an app" posts from his own account on Threads. One dozen-second short video got 498k views, and the app collected over two hundred ratings in Taiwan and charted in the Lifestyle grossing category. Then the heat faded, and it didn't take off outside Taiwan. The mechanics are almost all off-the-shelf; what's worth studying is how it used a single visual to pull people in.

### A dozen-second video

In 2026 Oct 2, the Threads account @trycloserapp (with only 1,059 followers as of 11-06) posted a short video with just one line of text:

> Cute app for couples, you can draw directly on your partner's desktop 😍

As of 11-06, it has 498k views, 10.8k likes, 124 comments, 589 reposts and 7,600 shares (Threads page, 11-06). The comments are almost all the same few lines: "what app is this", "is there an Android version", "don't let my partner see this". The author replied to each one and posted the download link.

This wasn't his first post. Sep 21 the app went live, and on Sep 26 he posted "Made an app to annoy my other half, finally live 😭", with 159k views and 4,600 shares, still pinned today. Sep 27: "For long-distance couples, we built an app for you⭐️", 113k views. Oct 3: "Write directly on your partner's desktop before bed", 60k views. Five posts in a week, all in first person, each about just one thing.

On Oct 3 someone commented: "Oh wow, it's on Google Play now, you're really getting things done." The Play listing date is Sep 18, but judging from that comment, the Android version only really went out and got pushed to everyone after Android users' requests flooded in (inferred).

### What it is

The store description is clear: two people each answer a question on their own phone, "nothing gets sent to the other until both have finished." Once both are done, the two answers are shown side by side, and each question has comments. Some questions require guessing how the other person answered, and some ask you to draw.

Beyond Q&A there's a pile of "small things": leave a sticky note at the top of your partner's home screen, post a few of today's photos (kept for 24 hours), set a mood, draw together on one doodle, put notes in a "jar" for your partner to shake out and read, two-person games like guess-the-drawing and block stacking, a memory map, anniversary countdowns, and streak counts. Doodles, photo frames, your partner's mood and the sticky notes can all be made into desktop widgets, so "whenever my partner does something, the widget updates."

Monetization is Closer Plus: NT$320 per month, NT$1,290 per year, **one subscription shared by both people** (Taiwan App Store page). On Play, in-app purchases are $9.99–39.99.

The developer is listed as IndieNeuron LLC, a US LLC with only this one app under its name. The posts' tone and wording are Taiwanese. I haven't confirmed who the person is.

### Scale

| Metric | Number (11-06) |
|---|---|
| Taiwan iOS ratings | 272 ratings, 4.82 stars |
| US iOS ratings | 8 |
| Taiwan daily ratings | 10-28 added 251,10 in 21 days, 1–6 per day |
| Taiwan Lifestyle grossing chart | On the chart since 10-30, ranked 37–70 (best 11-05 at 37,11-06 in 61) |
| Google Play | 5,708 installs, 7 days +595 |

By 10-28 it already had 251 ratings, and after that it added only single digits per day. Most of the two-hundred-plus ratings came from the posts between late September and mid-October (inferred; no daily numbers before 10-28). It never charted in the overall grossing chart.

The Lifestyle grossing chart ranks 40–60 in Taiwan aren't a high bar. Based on rating and install counts, cumulative users are probably 10,000 to 20,000, with monthly revenue estimated in the low thousands of USD (inferred, not verified).

What's clear is that people really are paying. One paid subscriber 10-13 gave it three stars: "The dinner-related questions keep repeating so much. I see the same topics every day... As a paying member, I expected a richer experience." Another 10-21 five-star review says "bought the paid plan for a year." 10-15 One user suggested "Plus should be priced at 200 a month for two people, which might get more people to buy."

One more detail: the app went live in Sep 21, and by Sep 30 the version number in reviews was already 1.5; by Oct 31 it was 1.11. More than a dozen versions in six weeks, and several reviews specifically praise "the customer service replies very fast" and "any issues get fixed right away."

### Why this one

**A picture you can get in ten seconds.** Q&A is the core of Closer, but Q&A can't be shown in a video. The post that took off showed "Draw one stroke and it shows up on their home screen." Viewers don't need to know what else the app does. Thinking "I want to draw a heart on my partner's phone" is enough.

**Threads Taiwan buys into "small apps made by Taiwanese people."** Around the same time, a nostalgic instant-messaging app hit #1 on the Taiwan free overall chart; Apple Chinese reported on a Taiwan app whose community passed a million views and whose download count passed 10,000 within 6 hours. "I built an app and finally shipped it 😭" is a ready-made hit format on Taiwan Threads, and Closer rode it.

**A precise audience: long-distance couples.** The posts keep saying "long distance," and comments include "he can see me drawing in real time on his phone while he's at work" and "long-distance love is a good fit." For people apart, a sudden doodle on the home screen feels more like "being together" than sending a LINE message. One person put it this way: it's more like passing notes in class as a kid than typing on LINE.

**A two-person product: one person who sees it brings in two downloads.** It only works when paired, and the subscription is shared by both, which lowers the willingness-to-pay bar.

### Where users come from

1. **The founder's own Threads account** (main channel, confirmed). The five posts above, 9-26 through 10-03, total about 850k views.

2. **Pairing** (confirmed). If one person installs it, they have to get their partner to install it too.

3. **Slipping into other people's posts.** From mid-October it switched to third-person copy ("Push Closer," "Sharing 4 couple apps"), replying under other people's couple threads to drive traffic. Views went from 146 to 2,500, two orders of magnitude below the first week.

4. **English TikTok account** (tested, didn't take off). @trycloserapp has 80 followers and 34 videos, with 10-21 to 11-05 plays per video, 4–695. The store and website are localized into 12 languages, but the US has only 8 ratings.

No media coverage, creator partnerships, or paid ads found; zero mentions on X in 60 days.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale (11-06) | How Closer differs |
|---|---|---|
| SumOne (Korea, 2019) | 132k ratings in Korea, 84k in Japan, 22k in Taiwan; #16 on Taiwan's Lifestyle Top Grossing | "One question a day, you only see the answers once both have answered" is its mechanic, which Closer copied; it has no home-screen doodling |
| Between(2011) | 44k ratings in Taiwan, 58k in Japan | Private chat and photo album for couples, no Q&A |
| Widgetable(2022) | 388k ratings in the US, top 50 on the free Lifestyle charts in several countries; 5,762 in Taiwan | The leader in home-screen widget social; doodle and photo widgets were its invention, works for friends and couples alike |
| Wiggle Together(2026-10-08) | 606 ratings in Taiwan, #20 on the Lifestyle free chart | A solo-built "shared doodle" app, doodling only, free with in-app purchases; launched in the evening 17 days before, and already has more than twice Closer's Taiwan ratings |
| Paired, Couple Joy | 210k and 40k ratings in the US | The leading couple Q&A app in English markets, barely present in Taiwan |
| Couple2 (from the Perpetual Calendar team, 2024) | 274 in Taiwan, 835 in Indonesia | A big-company couple space that has been up for two years; its Taiwan scale is about the same as Closer's |
| Our Bankbook, BanBan Ledger, SweetSync Love Heart | Rating 58–74 | Couple budgeting and logging apps built by small Taiwanese teams around August |

Taiwan's App Store has two other apps named "Closer" (a daily couple Q&A and a couple deep-talk card deck), both launched seven or eight months earlier, each with only about 1 ratings. They aren't piggybacking on this one; it picked a name that was already crowded.

In one line: every feature Closer has was done by someone first. SumOne's blind answers plus Widgetable's home-screen widgets, plus your draw-and-guess. The hook it went viral on, drawing on your partner's home screen, was matched and surpassed by Wiggle Together within a month.

### What users are complaining about

- **Repetitive question bank** : "The overlap in dinner-related questions is really high" and "After a few rounds it starts to feel a bit repetitive."

- **Paywall** : "Memory entries are capped at 10 days before you have to pay to keep adding them, so annoying" (two stars, 10-20).

- **Price** : people want NT$200 a month for both partners.

- **Unreliable home-screen widget** : "Until a few days ago you could see your partner's drawing live from the home-screen widget; now you have to tap into the app to see it" (three stars, 10-11). That's the very feature that made it take off.

- **Pairing experience** : "Often one person finds a topic they want to answer, but the other can't find it," and people want to send a "answer together" invite directly.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : the couple app category is already saturated, and Closer has nothing defensible of its own, so don't build another one like it. What's worth learning is its launch playbook: a picture that can be cut into a ten-second video, plus the founder posting first-person on Taiwan Threads for a week straight.

**Who it suits** : indie developers who can build iOS widgets and real-time sync, who are heavy Threads or Xiaohongshu users themselves, who can write posts like "I built an app and finally shipped it," and who will reply to comments one by one.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to make serious money in this category (estimated monthly revenue is only a few thousand dollars; the ceiling is something like SumOne, which has run for six or seven years); anyone wanting to start in English markets (Paired, Couple Joy, and Widgetable are all there, and Closer's English TikTok gets a few hundred plays per video); anyone who can't run content and expects organic growth after launch.

**How to do it** : go after what it did poorly, not build a more complete Closer. ① Narrow audience: long-distance and cross-border couples (time zones, two cities, distance, "what time is it there"). Comments already say "also suits cross-border couples." ② Content: the question bank is what paying users complain about most. Build deep question banks by relationship stage (just together, cooling off, meeting the parents, getting married), which retains people better than adding features. ③ Move the market: the same playbook can go to Threads or Xiaohongshu markets that also buy "local-made small apps," such as Japan or Korea, though SumOne is already there, so look for the weaker regions first (inferred, not checked region by region). On pricing, copy its key move: one subscription shared by two people, monthly fee around NT$200 / $6.

**How to get users** : decide which picture can be explained in ten seconds before writing any code. In the launch week, post five first-person posts in a row from the founder's account, each covering one picture and one audience (long distance, bedtime, at work). Reply when people ask in the comments, post the link, and when someone asks about Android, ship Android right away. Once it takes off, don't switch to third-person "recommend" copy mixed into other people's posts. Closer did that and views dropped by two orders of magnitude.

**When to aim for** : there's no hard deadline, but Valentine's Day (2027-02-14) is the natural posting moment for couple apps (inferred). Aim to launch before January, leaving a month to iterate.

**What would mean you got it wrong** : ① Closer's Taiwan ratings speed up again before December, or it climbs back into the top 20 of the Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. That would mean its retention and payments are better than they look and the category still has room. ② The reverse: a doodle-only free app like Wiggle Together keeps rising in Taiwan while Closer drops off the grossing chart. That would mean people only want the picture and won't pay for Q&A. ③ You run the same format on Threads for a week and none of the posts pass 10k views. That would mean this format is already played out in your market.

## Closer: Couple Daily Q&A · Doodles (ios_6812228318) research report

> App Store id6812228318, developer IndieNeuron LLC (this is their only app), listed on 2026-09-21 (Play version com.trycloserapp.closer 2026-09-18). Today 2026-11-06.

### One line

Closer is a couples app built by a Taiwanese indie developer: each partner answers questions separately, then you reveal the answers together, plus home-screen widgets like "doodle on your partner's screen" and "toss photos and sticky notes onto their home screen." It took off because in the first week the founder posted a few first-person "I made an app" posts on Threads from their own account. The home-screen doodle short video, 10-02, got **498k views and 10.8k likes** , brought in over two hundred ratings in Taiwan within days, and pushed the app onto the Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing chart. Momentum has clearly faded since, and the English market never really took off.

### 1. Data (how big it is now)

- **iOS ratings** : Taiwan 272, averaging 4.82 stars; US 8, averaging 4.75 stars (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06). Taiwan day by day: 10-28 251 → 11-06 272,10, +21 over 1–6 days (appstore db, app_day). Outside Taiwan it's nearly zero in total, with 37 in Hong Kong.

- **Charts** : on the Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing chart since 10-30, ranking 37–70 (best 11-05 at 37,11-06, 61); 10-28 and 10-29 on the Lifestyle Top Free chart at 66–76 (appstore db). Never charted on the overall chart.

- **Android** : 5,708 Play installs (5,000+ tier), +7 over the last 595 days; #110 on the Taiwan Lifestyle Top Free chart (googleplay db, 11-06).

- **Pricing** : Closer Plus is NT$320/month or NT$1,290/year, one subscription shared by both partners (Taiwan App Store page); Play in-app purchases $9.99–$39.99.

- **Reviews** : there are 18 written reviews. Several complaints from paying users say "question bank repeats", "the memory feature requires payment after 10 days", and "more people would buy it at 200 per month for two people", which suggests people really are paying (App Store reviews).

- **Verdict** : the bar to reach Taiwan's Lifestyle Top Grossing ranks 40–60 isn't high. Going by rating counts and installs, cumulative users are probably 10,000–20,000, and monthly revenue is likely in the low thousands of US dollars (estimate, unverified).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (appstore/googleplay db, 11-06) | How Closer differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SumOne(썸원,sandfox/MonyMony) | iOS/Android | 2019-12 | 132k ratings in Korea, 84k in Japan, 22k in Taiwan; #16,7 on Taiwan Lifestyle Top Grossing for 14 days | "One question a day, you can only see answers once you both reply" is SumOne's core mechanic, which Closer copied. SumOne is a pet-raising plus shared-diary app, with no home-screen doodles or live widgets. On Dcard, people complain that the veteran couples apps "have more ads and switched from one-time purchase to subscription." |
| Between(DLT Partners) | iOS/Android | 2011-11 | 44k ratings in Taiwan, 58k in Japan | Private chat plus photo album plus anniversary countdowns, positioned as an IM just for couples. No Q&A game. |
| Paired(Better Half) | iOS/Android | 2019-11 | US 210k ratings, +7 in 434 days | The leading couples Q&A app in English, leaning toward psychology and courses. Almost no presence in Taiwan. |
| Widgetable | iOS/Android | 2022-08 | 388k ratings in the US, and it sits in the top 50 of the Lifestyle Top Free chart in many countries. Taiwan: 5,762 | The leader in home-screen widget social (pets, doodles, photo widgets, shared by friends and couples). Closer grafts its home-screen doodles and photo widgets onto couples Q&A. |
| Couple Joy | iOS | 2022-05 | US 40k ratings, +7 in 236 days | Couples Q&A and games in English, heavily overlapping Closer's features. |
| Couple2(Youloft) | iOS | 2024-10 | 274 in Taiwan, 835 in Indonesia | A big-company (perpetual-calendar team) couples interaction space. Taiwan scale is similar to Closer's, but it has been around for two years. |
| Wiggle Together(Xiangyu Ren) | iOS | 2026-10-08 | 606 ratings in Taiwan, Lifestyle Top Free #20,7 for 14 days | A one-person "shared moon doodle" app launched around the same time, doodles only, free with in-app purchases. Its Taiwan rating count is already more than 2× Closer's, making it the most direct competitor for "shared/desktop doodles." |
| Taiwan local indie studios: our passbook (2026-08), Banban Ledger (2026-08), SweetSync Lovebond (free on Android) | iOS/Android | Around 2026-08 | Rating 58–74 | Mostly bookkeeping and logging. It shows how Taiwanese indie devs have piled into couples apps. |
| The many "Closer" apps: Closer: Daily Couple Q&A (Native, id6758536434,2026-01-31), Closer: Couple Deep-Talk Cards (Moon Capital, id6758883508,2026-02-25), closerapp.us, getcloser.app, closertogetherapp and closerclub on TikTok4all | iOS/web | since early 2026 | each has only about 1 ratings | **Note** : the recall said "copycat same-name apps followed," which is wrong. Both same-name apps in the Taiwan store were listed 7–8 months before Closer, so they didn't tag along; Closer itself took a name that was already crowded. |
| Big-company features: iOS Shared Albums, LINE Notes, Locket | Big-company features | — | — | Lets you share photos, but has no Q&A and no couple-ritual feel. |

Bottom line: lots of apps do the same thing, and the mechanics are all off-the-shelf (SumOne's blind answers + Widgetable's home-screen widgets + draw-and-guess). Closer has no original feature.

### 3. Growth tactics (where users come from)

#### Founder account on Threads + short videos (confirmed, main channel)

Posts from @trycloserapp (1,059 followers) in the week after launch (Threads page; view counts captured 11-06):

- 09-26 "Made a couples app to annoy my partner with, and it's finally live 😭": 159k views, 3.1K likes, 101 comments, 295 reposts, 4.6K shares (pinned)

- 09-27 "Long-distance couples, we made an app for you ⭐️": 113k views, 2K likes

- 09-28 "🚨Long-distance couples must download this app 😭": 17.4k views

- **10-02 "Cute-couple app where you can draw directly on your partner's home screen 😍" (short video): 498k views, 10.8k likes, 124 comments, 589 reposts, 7.6K shares**

- 10-03 "An app every couple needs 😭 write on their home screen before bed": 60.5k views

The comments are all "what app is this," "is there an Android version," "don't let my partner see this," and the author replies to each one with the download link. 10-03 One commenter wrote "Oh wow, it's on Google Play now, you're getting things done," meaning the Android version was released to meet that demand.

Posts after mid-October (10-18 "Recommend Closer" 146 views, 10-19 696 views, 10-24 replies under someone else's "This is too sweet even on a typhoon day" post 360 views, 11-05 "Sharing 4 couples apps" 2.5K views, 11-06 "This couples app is too cute") switched to a third-person "recommendation" tone, slipped into couples-app recommendation threads to drive traffic, and performed two orders of magnitude worse.

**The rating timeline matches too** : the earliest data in the database is from 10-28, when there were already 251 ratings, and after that it only grew by 1–6 per day. That means most of the 250 ratings came from the Threads wave between late September and mid-October (inference: there is no day-by-day data before 10-28).

#### Two-person invitations (built into the product, confirmed)

The product needs two people to pair up before it works, so every download brings a second download with it. One subscription covers both people. The recall card mentions /r/ invite codes, but on trycloserapp.com/threads a test just bounces 302 back to the homepage, so the invite-code mechanic is unverified.

#### English TikTok account (tried, didn't take off)

TikTok @trycloserapp has 80 followers, 34 videos, 352 total likes; English posts from 10-21 to 11-05 got only 4–695 plays each (TikHub). US iOS has only 8 ratings. The website and store listing are in 12 languages, but no market besides Taiwan has picked up.

#### What I couldn't find

Zero mentions on X (x-radar, 60 days); no press coverage, creator partnerships, or paid ads found. Dcard has couples-app discussion threads, but a verification wall blocked me, so I couldn't confirm whether Closer was mentioned.

### 4. Why it charted

1. **Threads Taiwan is especially receptive to 'small apps made by Taiwanese people'** , and there are ready-made hit templates: around the same time, the nostalgia app 即時通 hit #1 on Taiwan's overall free chart; Apple Ryan reported on a Taiwanese app that passed a million social views and ten thousand downloads in 6 hours. Closer's first-person "I made an app and finally shipped it 😭" fits right into that pattern.

2. **A visible, instantly understood hook** : "draw directly on your partner's phone home screen." That visual can be turned into a 10-second short video that spreads (the 498k-view post was exactly that), while the Q&A itself is not something that works well on video.

3. **A precise long-distance angle** : the posts repeatedly say "long-distance," the comments have ready-made audiences, and some ratings say "long-distance relationships are a great fit."

4. **Natural virality and a shared subscription from a two-person product** : one person sees it and pulls their partner in to install it too.

5. **The author personally replies** : a commenter wrote "Developers replying carefully to user feedback," and several developer replies are visible on the App Store. Together with 4.8 ratings, conversion is smooth.

### 5. Differentiation

- The only real difference: it bundles **SumOne-style blind-answer Q&A** and **Widgetable-style live home-screen widgets** (doodles, photos, sticky notes, mood, days together, distance in km) into one couples app, plus traditional-Chinese localized copy and aesthetic.

- **Is that why it took off? Partly** . What made it blow up wasn't the Q&A (SumOne has been doing it in Taiwan for years), but the "draw on your partner's home screen" widget visual that can be turned into video. That point is easy to copy, though: Widgetable already has it, and Wiggle Together launched in October and reached more than twice its Taiwan rating count within a month.

- Retention and monetization risks are already showing in the reviews: a repetitive question bank, a paywall (memory after 10 days), and pricing that feels high.

### 6. How many people have seen it

Word in small circles: a few Taiwan Threads posts reached 10–500k views; no public revenue, no press coverage, nobody talking about it on X. Revenue is not public.

### 7. What to borrow

- On Threads Taiwan, posting a first-person "I made XX and finally launched it 😭" with a 10-second short video that shows one visible magic moment (drawing on your partner's screen) worked 100× better than listing features.

- A two-person product: one subscription shared after pairing lowers the psychological barrier to paying.

- Shipped Android right after the spike. Commenters asking for Android were already ready-made users.

- Lesson on the downside: spreading across many languages doesn't mean traffic. The English TikTok account got a few hundred plays per post. Growth still depends on native content in one market and one community.

### 8. Still unclear

- Day-by-day ratings before 10-28 are missing, so the late-September to mid-October peak and the decay curve are inferred only.

- Conversion rate and real revenue unverified.

- Unverified whether the /r/ invite code has a reward mechanism.

- Whether they ran Threads/IG ads: the ad library only tracks listed products, so not finding it doesn't mean they didn't run ads.

- Developer identity: IndieNeuron LLC is a US LLC, the posts read as Taiwanese, the actual person is unidentified.
