# A Brazilian grocery app hit #7 on the Top Grossing chart, and it's not about price comparison, it's about how it charges

**What it is** A Brazilian supermarket list app that estimates which chain is cheapest for your whole basket. You can't use it without a subscription.

**Why it's working** The Brazilian shopping Top Grossing bar is very low. Half the top 30 are apps with under 30 ratings. It uses a hard paywall, a 7-day trial, and a web quiz funnel to turn a few thousand installs into subscriptions, then leans on its own short-video accounts to ride supermarket brand names for traffic.

**B** **How you could copy it** Don't go head-on with supermarket price comparison in Brazil. Take the charging playbook and move it: to categories like pharmacies, pet stores, or building materials, or to inflation-hit countries like Mexico or Argentina. Connect real prices early (e.g., receipt scanning), or renewals will drop off hard.

B grade: the playbook is cheap and clear, and few people know it, so it can be copied. But the ranking isn't worth much, the prices are estimates, retention isn't proven, and there are free local government apps that use real prices. Few people know about it yet

Cestôu! is a supermarket list app from a Brazilian company that was registered only two months ago. It launched in Oct 16 and reached #7 on the Brazil App Store shopping Top Grossing chart by Nov 6, yet the whole app has only 13 ratings. It charted for two reasons: nobody much competes in this chart, and its hard paywall means you can't use it without paying. Below: what it sells, how the money comes in, how much the ranking is worth, and whether this playbook can work again somewhere else.

### A 43-second video, 5 views

In Nov 6, the TikTok account @cestou.io posted 7 videos a day, each about 43 seconds long, with captions that were one exclamation plus two hashtags: "não creio! #mercado #atacadao" (I can't believe it!), "só agora descobri isso! #atacadao #mercado" (just found this out!), "não é possível!? #assai #cestou". The most-viewed hit 47 views, the least 0. The videos from the day before did better, between 160 and 190-plus views each. The account has 211 followers and has posted 394 videos. A second account, @marcelo.araujo697, uses the same formula, and its bio says "search CESTÔU on the App Store or Google Play" (TikTok, 11-06).

The hashtags Assaí, Atacadão, and Guanabara are all Brazilian supermarket chains. Assaí and Atacadão are wholesale stores that also serve individual shoppers. So the videos ride search traffic from supermarket names, with the goal of getting people to remember a brand term and then search for it in the store.

That same day, the app ranked #7 on the Brazil App Store shopping Top Grossing chart.

### What it is

It's a "monthly big shop" assistant. Brazilian households tend to do one large grocery run a month (compra do mês), and Cestôu! lets you build the list by typing or speaking, or have AI put one together based on household size and budget. Then you pick your state, and it ranks what the whole basket would cost at each chain, cheapest to most expensive. There's a "store mode" for when you're shopping: tick items off as you go, and it shows what you've spent in real time and how far you are from your budget. There's also family sharing and restock reminders like "22 days since you bought rice" (App Store and Google Play descriptions).

The landing page headline reads "Sua compra pode custar bem menos" (Your shop could cost a lot less). Below it: "+2,300 Cestouzeiros 4,9/5," an average saving of 30%, and coverage of 40+ national chains (acesso.cestou.io, 11-06).

First, a clear caveat: **the prices are estimated, not scraped from each store** . The Google Play description says in its own words that totals come "a partir de preços de referência por categoria e do perfil de preço de cada rede no seu estado" (from category reference prices and each chain's price profile in your state). In other words, it takes reference prices per category and multiplies them by each chain's price tier (wholesale, regular, premium). The App Store description also says "valor estimado da cesta" (estimated basket value). The changelog for version 11-01 1.0.4 says "comparison figures are more accurate now," which suggests the data is still being filled in.

### Where the money comes from

**You can't use it without a subscription.** The terms of service state: "O uso do aplicativo exige uma conta e uma assinatura ativa" (Using the app requires an account and an active subscription). There are three price tiers:

| Channel | Pricing |
|---|---|
| App Store in-app purchase | $2.99/month, $11.99/year, with discounted tiers too |
| Google Play | R$14.90/month, R$62/year |
| Web (Stripe payments) | R$79/year, the landing page says "equivalent to R$6.58 per month" |

All three channels offer a 7-day free trial. The web route is a quiz-style funnel (acesso.cestou.io/?funil=1): it first asks questions like "how many people is this shop for?", shows you "your ideal list" and "the cheapest supermarket near you," and only then asks for payment. This is a playbook that Western subscription apps have used for the past couple of years: win people over on the web first, then have them install the app (the industry calls it web2app). It's still rare in Brazilian everyday-utility apps. The terms also include a "partner discount code," which looks like it's set up for creator affiliates.

### What a #7 ranking is worth

Not much. In the Brazil App Store shopping Top Grossing chart as of Nov 6, the top 30 included one with only 6 ratings at #15, 8 at #24, 11 at #15, 12 at #0, and 20 at #2. About half of the top 30 are small apps with under 30 ratings (App Store Brazil, 11-06). There's almost no competition in this chart. A few subscriptions a day can get you into the top 10 (inferred).

Its ranking curve fits that explanation:

| Date | Brazil shopping Top Grossing |
|---|---|
| 10-28 | 39 |
| 10-31 | 55 |
| 11-02 | 74 |
| 11-03 | 30 |
| 11-04 | 8 |
| 11-05 | 13 |
| 11-06 | 7 |

11-03 to 11-04 it jumped from #74 to #8. Looking back 7 days takes you to late October. If installs clustered in those days, the 7-day trials would have expired and auto-charged right then, which would produce this jump (inferred, unverifiable). The user base is in the thousands: 13 iOS ratings, and Android installs of 10-29 to 1,219,11-06 to 1,528,8 climbed by 309 in a day, about 40 a day (Google Play, 11-06).

So #7 tells you it is taking in money, not how much. Going by that user base, monthly revenue is probably in the hundreds to low thousands of dollars (estimate).

### Where users come from

- **Its own TikTok and Instagram accounts** : the two TikTok accounts above each post 5+ videos a day. On Instagram, @cestouoficial_ started posting reels from 10-26 with captions like "que máximo isso! #supermercado #cestou" (this is amazing!), getting 8 likes. Another account, @cestou.brasil, no longer loads. The volume is small, and the cost is close to zero.

- **App store search** : searching "comparar precos supermercado" (compare supermarket prices) on the Brazil App Store, it ranks #3.

- **Paid ads** : none found. The landing page splits traffic by channel (visits from /tiktok redirect to /paginaoficial) and includes the quiz funnel. The structure looks built for paid acquisition, but the domain doesn't appear to be running ads in the Meta Ad Library.

- **Early reviews** : of the 5 visible reviews, all are five-star 10-16 to 10-19, clustered in the first 4 days after launch, and they read like endorsements. For example: "A economia é real… consegui economizar 100 reais, já valeu o investimento!!" (The savings are real… I saved 100 reais, it was worth the investment already!!), and "nunca imaginei que essa tecnologia iria chegar no brasil" (I never imagined this technology would come to Brazil). In the two weeks since, almost no new ratings have appeared, which looks like a first batch gathered from friends at launch (inferred).

### Who it's competing with

"List plus price comparison" is not new in Brazil. The real competitors are free, and their data is more trustworthy:

| Name | Scale (Brazil App Store ratings) | How it differs from Cestôu! |
|---|---|---|
| Preço da Hora (Bahia state government, with versions for other states like Paraíba) | 4,110 | Uses **actual transaction prices** from e-invoices, free, covers only its own state |
| Menor Preço (Paraná state, Nota Paraná) | 457 | Also uses real prices from invoices, free, single state only |
| Méliuz | 279k | Cashback plus receipt scanning, ranked #1 on the same chart, but no whole-basket comparison |
| Listonic, Bring! | About 11.5k each | Pure lists and family sharing, mostly free, no price comparison |
| A batch of small apps that appeared over the past 2026 years: Zeebro, poupa+, Mercapp, Economiza AI, Preço Perto, and others | 0–61 each | Mostly receipt scanning and manual price logging, free or soft-paywalled, none charting on Top Grossing |
| iFood Mercado, Mercado Livre grocery, Rappi | Big | Can order and deliver directly, but don't compare prices across chains |

Name collisions are also a problem: on Instagram, @cestoubr had creators posting "nearby supermarket price comparison" with #publi in July 2026, earlier than this company's registration (Sep 3). There's also cestou.tech, which does shared lists. I couldn't confirm whether any of these are connected to this company.

So compared with its rivals, Cestôu! wins on three things, not on data: first, it presents conclusions ("this list is cheapest at X supermarket") rather than a pile of item prices; second, a wall of 40 chain logos and "save 30%" messaging; third, it's willing to charge. Most of its competitors are free, so none of them can chart on Top Grossing.

### Who's behind it

The developer is RM Group Soluções Digitais Ltda, a micro-business in Rio de Janeiro registered in Sep 3 (founded 2026) with R$10k in registered capital and only this app in its name (Brazil business registry, CNPJ 68.964.655/0001-13). It took six weeks from company registration to launch, and three more weeks to reach the Top Grossing chart. Few people know about it: nobody has mentioned it on X in the past two months, there's no press coverage, and no public revenue figures.

### If it were you

**B: worth trying, but learn the charging playbook, not this product.** It shows that in a country and category where the Top Grossing bar is very low, a hard paywall plus a 7-day trial plus a web funnel can turn a few thousand installs into a top 10 placement. It doesn't show that the business keeps users. The prices are estimates, and a user comparing against a receipt will likely spot the gap, while the free state government apps use real transaction prices.

**Who it suits** : small teams of 1–2 people who've shipped subscription apps and can build quiz funnels and paywalls, and who read Portuguese or Spanish or know everyday spending in a Latin American country well.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to go head-on with "Brazil supermarket price comparison." There are free government apps and plenty of solo developers there, and real price comparison needs real data, which is hard work to collect. It also doesn't suit anyone hoping to use a chart ranking to raise money or sell an account, since the ranking is barely worth anything.

**How to do it** : change the category or the country. For categories, pick things with big price gaps that shoppers can't easily see: pharmacies (Drogasil and Pague Menos in Brazil show clear differences), pet food, building materials, fuel. For countries, pick high-inflation ones where people have a "one big shop a month" habit: Mexico, Argentina, Colombia. Start by checking that country's App Store Top Grossing chart in the target category, and count how many of the top 30 have under 30 ratings. The more there are, the lower the bar. Structure the product the same way: list, a one-line conclusion ("save R$115 by shopping at X"), a paywall, a 7-day trial, and an annual plan anchored as "less than a coffee a month." You can cold-start with estimated data, but connect real prices sooner than they did, even if it's only one or two cities. Use user-uploaded receipts: many Latin American e-invoices have QR codes you can scan to read line items. Otherwise, you'll lose a lot of subscribers at the first renewal.

**How to get users** : follow their playbook. Post short videos daily from a few owned accounts, riding local chain names with hashtags and exclamation-style captions, ending with a call to "search [name] in the store." Pair it with a web funnel so payments bypass the app store's commission. Their videos get only dozens to a few hundred views each, so the content itself hasn't worked yet. You could be more specific: film the same shopping list at two stores and post the receipts side by side to show the actual price gap.

**No hard deadline** : this playbook doesn't rely on a holiday. But "whole-basket price comparison plus subscription" has no serious player in Latin America yet, so if you want to do it, get the first country running before Q1 of 2027.

**Signs you're reading it wrong** : ① Before January, Cestôu! drops out of the top 50 in the Shopping grossing chart and doesn't come back, or reviews start clustering around "prices don't match" and "want a refund", meaning the hard paywall only converts the first payment and can't keep people; ② It starts running heavy Meta ads and its rank holds, meaning the unit economics work, and that's when you need to move faster; ③ Brazil's or Mexico's big platforms (Méliuz, iFood, Mercado Livre) launch free whole-basket comparison, at which point this path is basically closed.

### One line

### Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | iOS 2026-10-16; Android package com.rmgroup.cestou, live for 10-26+ before | iTunes lookup; Google Play library |
| iOS ratings | 13 ratings, average 4.6; 10-28 is 11 ratings, 11-03 and 11-04 each +1 | iTunes lookup 11-06; appstore library app_day |
| Brazil Shopping grossing chart | 10-28 #39 → 10-31 #55 → 11-02 #74 → **11-03 #30 → 11-04 #8** → 11-05 #13 → **11-06 #7** | appstore library chart_rank (genre 6024, grossing) |
| Android installs | 10-29 1,219 → 11-06 1,528 (8 days +309, about 40/day); best on the House & Home Top Free chart: #103 | googleplay library app_day / app_profile |
| Pricing | iOS: $2.99/month, $11.99/year (discounted tiers too); Play: R$14.90/month, R$62/year; web funnel: R$79/year, "7-day trial", "7-day guarantee" | Recalled data card; Play page; acesso.cestou.io/tiktok |
| Marketing claims | "+2,300 Cestouzeiros 4.9/5", "save 30% on average", "covers 40+ national chains"; the landing-page user testimonials (Luiza Marinho etc.) are on-site assets, authenticity unverified | acesso.cestou.io, /paginaoficial |

**How to read this grossing rank** : in Brazil's Shopping grossing top 30 from 11-06, #6 TrackPack has 15 ratings, #8 has 24, #11 has 15, #12 has 0, #20 has 2 (appstore library v_chart + app_profile, 11-06). In other words, this chart has almost no competition in Brazil, and a few subscriptions a day can get you into the top 10. 11-03 to 11-04 it jumped from #74 to #8, which lines up with the October install base plus a wave of 7-day trials converting at once (inferred, unverified). 13 ratings and 1,500 Play installs suggest total users in the thousands.

### The product

- **Core pitch** : "the same list, what each chain in your state would charge", producing a ranking from cheapest to most expensive, plus voice entry, AI-generated monthly lists by headcount and budget, "mercado mode" for checking items off while you shop, live budget comparison, family sharing, and a "22 days until you run out of rice" restock reminder (App Store description, Play description, landing page).

- **Where prices come from** : the Play description says: "O Cestôu! calcula o total da sua lista a partir de preços de referência por categoria e do perfil de preço de cada rede no seu estado — atacarejo, supermercado ou rede premium" — **estimated by multiplying category reference prices by each chain's price tier (wholesale / regular supermarket / premium)** , and the app flags numbers as "not yet measured". So it isn't scraping real prices store by store; the 40+ chain logo wall is mostly marketing (landing page logos come from logo.dev). The 11-01 1.0.4 update note says "comparação com valores mais preciso", suggesting data is still being filled in.

- **Monetization** : the terms state "O uso do aplicativo exige uma conta e uma assinatura ativa" — a **hard paywall** ; in-app purchases go through Apple / Google subscriptions, web through Stripe; the terms also include a clause on "partner discount codes", leaving room for creator referral codes (acesso.cestou.io/termos-de-servico).

- **Funnel** : acesso.cestou.io/?funil=1 is a quiz-style funnel ("how many people are you buying groceries for?" …) that shows "your ideal list + the cheapest supermarket near you" before asking for payment. It's a web2app playbook that 2024–2026 overseas subscription apps use often, still rare in Brazil's everyday-utility category.

**Verdict** : "list + price comparison" is nothing new in Brazil. State governments offer free invoice-based price comparison with more reliable data, and in 2026 a bunch of indie-dev apps of the same kind showed up. Cestou's edge isn't the data, it's **packaging and how it charges** : a one-glance "cheapest whole basket" verdict, a wall of national chain logos, "save 30% / save R$1,380 a year" copy, a hard paywall with a trial, and a web funnel. Most similar small apps are free or soft-paywalled, so they have no revenue and never reach the grossing charts.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **TikTok own-account matrix (confirmed)** : @cestou.io (bio "O jeito inteligente de fazer mercado! Comece a economizar agora", bio link acesso.cestou.io/tiktok, 211 followers, 394 videos) and @marcelo.araujo697 (bio "Pesquise por \"CESTÔU\" na APPLE STORE OU GOOGLE PLAY", 90 followers, 321 videos). The two accounts post 5+ times a day each, 11-05 and 11-06, with uniform copy like "não creio! #assai" and "só agora descobri isso! #atacadao": surprised-tone captions with supermarket-chain hashtags. Single-video views 1–865 (TikHub, 11-06). Volume is small; the play is riding supermarket names and steering viewers to search the brand in the store.

2. **Instagram account matrix (confirmed)** : @cestouoficial_ has been posting reels since 10-26("que máximo isso! #supermercado #cestou", 8 likes). @cestou.brasil's reels now won't open (profile shows "unavailable", possibly banned or deleted). Under #cestou, new reels appear almost daily (Jina search, instagram.com/_c/reel/…).

3. **Store search (partly confirmed)** : searching "comparar precos supermercado" in the Brazil iTunes store, Cestou ranks #3. Every short video steers viewers to "search Cestôu in the store."

4. **Paid ads (unconfirmed)** : the landing page splits by channel (/tiktok → /paginaoficial), has a `?funil=1` quiz funnel and Stripe web checkout. That setup is usually built for paid traffic. But the metaads library returns nothing for the cestou.io domain or this app's iOS id, the tiktokads library was checked 11-03 with status unconfirmed, and the Meta ad library web view can't be read without a login.

5. **Affiliate referral codes (leads only)** : the terms mention "discount codes issued by partners, renewal at the discounted price stays valid." @cestoubr had creators with #publi posts on 2026-07 (Débora Prado, Tafnes Ronsani), but RM Group wasn't registered yet at that time (09-03), so we can't confirm it's the same product.

6. **Incentivized reviews (suspected)** : of 13 ratings, the 5 visible ones are all 10-16 to 10-19 stars, 5 of them, clustered in the first 4 days after launch, with testimonial-style copy ("saved R$100, already paid back the subscription"). Almost no new ratings in the two weeks after, which fits the pattern of recruiting acquaintances for the first batch of reviews (inference).

### Why it charted (it just cleared the bar)

1. **The chart bar is very low** : in Brazil's Shopping grossing chart, most of the top 30 apps have under 30 ratings. A hard-paywalled product only needs a few subscriptions a day to reach the top 10 (appstore library, 11-06).

2. **硬付费墙 + 7 天试用** :装了就必须订阅才能用,1,500 个 Android 装机加上千级 iOS 装机就足够撑起名次;11-03/04 名次跳升和试用集中转正的时间对得上(推断)。

3. **Hits the pain of monthly bulk shopping under Brazil's food inflation** : Brazilian households have the "compra do mês" habit, and wholesale chains (Assaí, Atacadão) and ordinary supermarkets differ noticeably in price. "Which store has the cheapest whole basket" is an instantly understood promise. Comments like "nunca imaginei que essa tecnologia iria chegar no brasil" show the packaging reads as new locally.

4. **Low-cost content matrix** : several accounts post daily "shocking price gap" videos, riding search traffic for chains like Assaí / Atacadão / Guanabara / Mundial, then steering viewers to search the brand in the store.

5. **The overseas subscription-app playbook (quiz funnel, web2 app, Stripe, trial, annual anchoring "one month R$6.58") moved into Brazil's everyday-tools category** , where local competitors are mostly free and don't charge.

### Differentiation

Weak product-level differentiation: prices are estimated, not real, and the state governments' invoice-based apps have more reliable data and are free. The real difference is **the verdict-style "cheapest basket" presentation + national chain logo endorsement + hard-paywalled subscription + overseas web2 app funnel** . That's why it reached the grossing chart (free peers have no revenue and so can't chart), but it's not why users stay. Once users notice estimates don't match their receipts, refund and bad-review risk is high (the recall data mentions reviews already asking to cancel, not seen in this RSS sample).

### Visibility and copycats

- **Few people know about it yet** : X corpus searches return nothing (x-radar 60 days, 0 related posts); no press coverage, no public revenue; Reclame Aqui's "is it trustworthy" check on cestou.io gives a 1/5 shield (insufficient data).

- **Copycats** : none specifically copying it yet; there are, however, many similar small Brazilian apps from the same period (see competitor table), and several share the name "Cestou."

### Takeaways

- Ride a **country × category with a low grossing-chart bar** (Brazil Shopping) using a hard-paywalled subscription, where a few thousand installs can earn Top 10 exposure.

- Turn "price comparison" into **a one-line verdict** (this list is cheapest at store X, saving R$115) rather than a pile of item prices. Cold-start with an estimation model of "reference price × chain tier," and add real prices later.

- The overseas web2 app playbook (quiz funnel → personalized result → trial / annual anchoring → Stripe) is almost unused in Latin American everyday-tools apps.

- Content: local chain-supermarket hashtags + surprised-tone copy + steering viewers to search the brand in the store, at near-zero cost.

- Can be copied into other categories (pharmacies, pets, building materials, gas stations) or other countries (inflationary ones like Mexico and Argentina).

### Still unclear

- Whether it runs paid Meta / TikTok ads (the landing page structure suggests so, but the libraries show nothing).

- Actual subscription revenue; what money corresponds to rank #7 on Brazil's Shopping grossing chart.

- What's the relationship between @cestoubr (2026-07 has a same-named comparison product with #publi) and RM Group?

- How accurate the estimated prices are; retention and cancellation rates after trial.

- The "want to cancel subscription" reviews mentioned in the recall didn't appear in this review sample.
