# An X post with no caption, 2.5M people saw it and went on to install an app that "fills Japan's map with your photos"

**What it is** An iPhone app that automatically fits each trip's photos into the shapes of the prefectures or countries you've visited. The map of Japan and the globe slowly fill up with your own photos, and you can export them as nice-looking posts.

**Why it took off** On Nov 3 the developer posted on X with only the finished screenshots, and it got 2.54M views. Its collage outputs look far better than the single-photo crops and flat color fills of similar apps, so the images themselves are the ad. Thai and Taiwanese bloggers then reshared it.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't copy it for Japan. Move to markets with natural administrative units like Korea, Taiwan or the US, or switch to themes like concert venues or the 100 famous mountains. Make the exported image the most polished part, and acquire users by posting only the finished images with one line of text.

Grade B: simple features, a clear playbook, and other regions and themes still open. But Japan is already crowded with dozens of similar apps, subscription prices are low and the revenue ceiling is modest, and its surge depended largely on one viral post that followers may not be able to replicate. An iOS app built by one Japanese graduate student that fits each trip's photos into the outlines of prefectures and countries, filling the map of Japan and the globe piece by piece with your own pictures. The idea isn't new: the Japanese store has dozens of similar apps, and one of them has already reached 140k downloads. This one rose to the top 3 of the Japan Travel Top Free chart within three days, on the strength of a post with just four screenshots. Below: why it caught fire in a crowded category, how much money is involved, and what you can follow or should avoid.

### A post on Culture Day morning

Nov 3, 2026, is Culture Day in Japan, a public holiday. At 11:22 a.m. (Japan time), an X account called @mii_devlog posted with the single line "もっと旅行に行きたくなるアプリ✈️" (an app that makes you want to travel more), followed by four screenshots: on a map of Japan, prefectures visited are filled with a small set of travel photos, and unvisited ones stay blank.

The account's bio reads "大学院生 | 個人開発 AI × アプリ開発" (grad student | indie dev, AI × app development). It was created in December 2025 and has about 1,200 followers. As of Nov 6, the post had **2.54M views, 22k likes and 1,240 reposts** , with only 44 replies. A month earlier, on Oct 6, he had posted the app's launch announcement: 16k views and 186 likes, with no real splash.

On the afternoon of Nov 6 he posted again: "Lumap - 20,000 downloads🎉".

### What it is

Lumap ("Lumap - 旅の写真を地図に" on the App Store, shown as "Lumap : Travel Photo Map" in overseas stores) launched on Sep 23, is credited to murata makoto, and is iPhone-only.

How it works is simple: pick a trip, choose up to 20 photos, and the app automatically arranges them into the shape of that prefecture (or country). You can shuffle and rearrange, or place each one by hand. For long, thin places like Okinawa or Chile, you can switch to a style with the shape left blank and photos around it. Each trip is a "work", so visiting the same place several times gives you several works, and the "My Japan" and "My World" home screens fill up with them over time. There is also a year-in-review (number of trips, new places, prefecture-completion rate), a small game where prefecture pieces fall from the sky for you to reassemble the map of Japan, and home-screen widgets.

The export is the most polished part: 4:5 for posts and 9:16 for Stories, with background colors, paper / canvas / washi / watercolor textures, Polaroid and stamp frames, and Ming and handwriting fonts. No account needed, and your photos only ever live on your phone.

### Why this one took off

To be clear, it isn't the first to do this.

TsuzuKit's 旅行思い出マップ (Travel Memories Map) launched in February 2024, doing the same thing: cutting travel photos into prefecture shapes and pasting them onto a map of Japan. The developer's site says the idea came from seeing 2021 years ago on social media people printing travel photos, cutting them into prefecture shapes, and making a poster. It claims 141k cumulative downloads and 783 ratings in the Japan store (11-06). Earlier still, 経県値 has let people long-press and color in prefectures they've visited since 2018, with 12k ratings; Journeys has 2,759 as well.

Lumap differs from them in one way: **how good the result looks, and whether you can post it straight away** . The early players do one photo per prefecture cropped, or a flat color. Lumap makes a collage of several photos within one prefecture, then adds paper textures, frames and fonts, so the output is a finished image ready for Instagram. The viral post needed no caption because the screenshots explain it.

Commenters liked these same things:

> "Picking the best ones out of a limit of 20 is fun!" "Every first screen you've reached keeps piling up, kind of like collecting achievements, so it's fun!" ——Japan store, five-star review, 11-03 (choosing which 20 cards to keep is a blast; the places you've visited on the home screen keep stacking up, like collecting achievements)

> "思い出をパズルにできて、保存できる写真もおしゃれ" — four-star review in the Japan store, 11-04 (Turning memories into a puzzle, and the saved images look stylish too)

### Numbers: the surge is real, but the volume is small

Japan App Store data:

| Date | Overall free chart | Travel Top Free | Travel Top Grossing | Cumulative ratings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | - | - | 124 | 14 |
| 11-02 | 130 | 5 | 13 | 15 |
| 11-04 | 93 | 3 | 17 | 25 |
| 11-05 | 194 | 10 | 11 | 29 |
| 11-06 | 56 | 3 | 7 | 46 |

11-06 it added 17 ratings in a day, with a rating of 4.7. 11-02 It has already reached #130 on the overall Top Free chart, a day before the viral post. That means a small wave came earlier, source not confirmed.

From 11-04 it appeared on the Travel Top Free charts in Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Macau (best in Taiwan at #42, Thailand #60), but those stores each have only 0 ratings. Spread there came from secondary sharing: Thai travel blogger @attopsa4 11-03 introduced it in Thai, with 41k views, and a Taiwanese Facebook fan page relayed it as "an app designed by a creator". Japan travel content is already popular in both places, and the English subtitle made it understandable to overseas users.

Other channels are tiny: the developer's own TikTok @m_devlog posted several videos in October with 877 to 1,346 views; the app-recommendation account "アプリ大学" featured it once, with 988 views (10-19). No paid ads found (not finding them doesn't mean there were none).

### Where the money comes from

The free version has ads, and export offers only white and black backgrounds, with 2 photos per map for Japan and for the world. Lumap Pro removes ads, lifts the map limits, unlocks all backgrounds, textures, frames and fonts, and allows free layout. Pricing is **¥300 a month, ¥3,000 a year, or ¥3,000 one-time** (Japan App Store, 11-06).

On the Travel Top Grossing chart it climbed from #120–190 in late October to #11-06 on 7, which shows people are paying. But the bar for Japan's Travel grossing chart is low, and the revenue behind #7 is probably small (inferred). I haven't verified the amount. The developer has published only download numbers, not revenue.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Launched | Scale (Japan store, 11-06) | How Lumap differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 旅行思い出マップ (TsuzuKit) | 2024-02 | 783 ratings, claims 141k downloads | The most direct predecessor: photos cropped into prefecture shapes on a map, mostly one photo per prefecture, Japan only |
| Keiken-chi (Qdan) | 2018-08 | 12k ratings, claims about 200k monthly active users | Press-and-hold or visit-based coloring for scoring; a scoring tool, not a photo-work app |
| Journeys | 2020-03 | 2,759 rating | Japan and world map coloring for visit logs |
| Visited / Been | 2014 / 2023 | 1,266 / 43 rating | Global coloring of countries visited, Europe and US focus |
| JPphoto(KAIND Apps) | 2026-11-02 | 0 rating | Automatically sorts the camera roll into prefectures by GPS and shades by photo count; launched a day before the viral post, not a copycat |
| ClearMap, たびちず, tabilog, Travory and 30 more | 2021–2026 | Most 0–200 ratings | Coloring, fog-clearing, check-ins, photo pins; plenty of Instagram Reels showing "my visited prefectures filled with photos" |
| The Places feature in the iPhone Photos app | Built in | All iPhones | Just dots on a map, no shape-filling, no finished artwork |

There are 70+ App Store JP apps with names containing both "map" and "travel / photo / prefecture", and 30+ launched this year alone. The category isn't short on products. What it lacks is one that's beautifully made and got a real push.

### Can you ride it?

The core feature is easy. Placing photos into polygons, exporting, and subscriptions can be built by a competent iOS dev in a few weeks, and the early movers already cover about 80% of it. Lumap's moat is only two things: taste, and the creator's X account, which can produce viral posts. The first can be copied. The second is luck plus long-term posting, and followers can't reproduce it.

Building one for Japan isn't worth much: there are dozens of competitors, Lumap just captured this wave, and other devs will soon add collages and polished exports to their apps.

The interesting move is changing location:

- **South Korea, Taiwan and the US** all have natural "fill the administrative regions" units (Korea's do and si, Taiwan's counties and cities, the US's 50 states). English-market products like Atlas Photo Map auto-generate maps from album GPS data, but no one has nailed "one polished collage per trip, with fine exports" yet.

- **Change the theme** : the same "photos filling an outline" idea works for concert tours (venues visited), Japan's 100 famous mountains, baseball stadiums, station stamp rallies. These communities already love posting about "conquering" things.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : this is a sample of "make an already-proven small category look better, then go viral with one image." The playbook is clear and costs little, but the revenue ceiling is modest, and whether it takes off depends heavily on a single post.

**Good fit** : indie devs with taste who can make their own visuals and already run an X or Instagram account; people who have built photo apps and can ship a prototype in a week.

**Bad fit** : teams that want steady monthly income and need paid acquisition to pay back. A ¥300 monthly subscription with use only a few times a year can't support paid ads.

**How to build it** : pick a market or theme Lumap hasn't covered, and treat the exported image as the most important screen in the product. Give away three or four good-looking paper and frame styles for free, put more styles and unlimited maps behind a subscription, and offer a one-time purchase price (Lumap's lifetime and annual plans are the same price, ¥3,000). Store data only on-device and skip sign-up to lower the barrier on first open.

**How to get users** : copy that viral post. Skip the selling points and post only finished images, with one line that makes people want to travel. Time it before local long holidays. Keep the app name unobtrusive on the finished image, so every share is an ad. Then get two or three local travel bloggers to repost it. That's how the Thai one with 41k views came about.

**When to move** : Japan copycats will appear within a month or two. Markets like Korea and Taiwan are best launched before year-end holidays and Lunar New Year travel season, since annual recap images are what people most want to share this time of year.

**Signs you've misread it** : if two weeks from now Lumap's daily new ratings in the JP store drop to single digits and it falls out of the top 30 in Travel Top Grossing, this was a one-off viral spike, not real demand. If your finished images go out three or five times with no shares, your taste isn't good enough, and adding features won't fix that.

### One line

Mii, a Japanese grad student and solo indie dev (@mii_devlog, listed as murata makoto on the App Store), built a free-plus-subscription iOS app that automatically fills the outline of each prefecture or country you've visited with your own photos, up to 20 shots per trip. Japan's map and globe get filled in piece by piece with your pictures, and you can export the result as a finished image sized for Instagram and Stories. 2026-11-03 The developer posted a single X tweet (4 screenshots, with only the caption 「もっと旅行に行きたくなるアプリ✈️」), and it got **2.5M views, 22k likes and 1.5K reposts** . The app then shot up to #2–3 on the Japan Travel Top Free chart and #56 overall on Top Free, and the developer shared that it hit **20k downloads** . 11-06

- Appeared on the th / tw / hk / mo Travel free charts from 11-04 (best in tw at 42, th at 60), but those stores show rating counts of 0 only.

- 10-31, 11-01 has no data in the database; 11-02 already hit the overall free chart 130, which means a wave of growth had already started around 11-01 (possibly October creator posts / the developer's own ongoing posting), and 11-03's viral post pushed it to a higher second peak.

- Travel Top Grossing rose from #120–190 at end of October to #11-06, reaching #7: subscriptions (Lumap Pro monthly / annual) are clearly bringing in money. The Japan Travel grossing chart has a low bar, and #7 only means small daily revenue; the amount is unverified.

- Current version 1.4.0 (released 11-05), rating 4.70 (iTunes lookup JP, 2026-11-06).

### 2. Competitors (the Japanese "travel footprint map" space is very crowded)

Apps in the JP store with 地図 plus 旅 / 写真 / 塗 / 都道府県 in the name: 70+, and 30+ of them launched in 2026, most with 0 ratings. Ones with real scale:

| Product | Launched | Scale | How Lumap differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keiken-chi (Qdan Inc.) | 2018-08 | JP 12,224 ratings, 7 daily +67; PR TIMES says ~200k MAU (2026-03) | Colors prefectures and municipalities by "lived / stayed / visited" and scores them. A scoring tool, not a photo artwork. |
| Tabi Omoide Map (Ryo Tsudukihashi) | 2024-02 | 782 ratings; developer claims 141k cumulative downloads, best travel-category rank #40 | **Most direct early mover** : crops photos to prefecture shapes on a Japan map (inspired by hand-cut photo map posters on SNS). But each prefecture is basically one cropped photo, Japan only, with no "one artwork per trip" and no world map. |
| Visited Travel | 2014-04 | jp 1,266 ratings | Common Western-style visited-countries coloring and stats |
| Been / Been & Done | 2023 | JP 43 / 9 ratings | World country coloring, no photos |
| ClearMap (fog-clearing map) | 2026-03 | 40 rating | GPS fog-clearing footprint |
| Osanpo Kiroku, mogiri, Tabichizu, Tabiro, Tabilog, Nippon Seiha, ExpMap (world edition of Keiken-chi by the same company), etc. | 2021–2026 | 0–200 ratings | Coloring / check-ins / photo pins, varied forms |
| JPphoto - 47 prefecture photo map (KAIND Apps) | 2026-11-02 | 0 rating | Auto-sorts your photos into prefectures by GPS and shades each by photo count. It's a photo-organizing tool, and it launched before the viral post, so it's not a copycat. |
| tabilog, Travory, Pinory, etc. (Instagram Reels promotion) | 2026 | Not verified | They all push the line "行った県が写真で埋まっていく" (the prefectures you've visited fill up with photos), which shows this copy/visual is a common play on Japanese Reels. |
| Overseas: Atlas Photo Map, Travel Photo Map, etc. | - | TikTok creators are promoting it (enjoythewood, 2024-year-old video, 250K views) | Similar products in the English market that auto-generate maps from album GPS data |
| Big-tech feature: the Places album in the iOS Photos app | - | Built in | Just dots on a map, no shape collage or artwork |

**Verdict: many products do the same thing, including a direct predecessor with 140K downloads. Lumap didn't invent the category.**

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **The developer's own X build-in-public account: the main engine (confirmed)** . @mii_devlog, "Grad student | indie dev, AI × app dev," registered 2025-12, about 1,200 followers. 10-06 posted the launch thread (video + link). 11-03 posted a 4-image post **2.5M views / 22K likes / 1.5K reposts / 43 replies** (x.com/mii_devlog/status/2117442333516198186), after which rankings and ratings jumped in step. The post has no caption; the finished images alone carried it. "A Japan map made from your own photos" was itself the thing people shared.

2. **Second-wave spread in Thailand and Taiwan (confirmed)** . Thai travel blogger @attopsa4 11-03 recommended "Lumap: Travel Photo Map" in Thai, 41.3K views / 577 likes (x.com/attopsa4/status/2117519535242944732). The Taiwanese Facebook fan page FPCChannel also relayed it as "an app designed by a creator." This lines up with when the th and tw travel charts appeared (11-04, 11-05). The English name "Lumap: Travel Photo Map" is shown outside the Japan store, which lowers the barrier for overseas users.

3. **App-roundup account (confirmed, small reach)** . The official App University account @appuni_7 10-19 posted a recommendation, 988 views (x.com/appuni_7/status/2112083811349729470). It reads as a routine roundup or partnership post with limited impact.

4. **Developer TikTok @m_devlog (confirmed, small reach)** : several videos from 10-09 to 10-24 with 877–1,346 views, tagged #LUMAP #旅行アプリ.

5. **App Store search plus category-chart flywheel (inferred)** : the free Travel chart in Japan has a low bar. A few thousand downloads from the viral post were enough to reach the top 3, and charting in the Travel category then brought in organic exposure.

6. **In-product spread (inferred)** : exported 4:5 / 9:16 images carry the Lumap style, which makes them natural for Instagram / X sharing; 1.4.0 adds "split the map by travel companion," a direct answer to the comments asking for sharing / co-editing.

7. No evidence of paid ads found. Our Meta and TikTok ad library checks only cover products on our watchlist, so "not found" doesn't mean "not run."

### 4. Why it took off

- **A finished-product image post blew up in the X Japan travel / lifestyle circle** : 2.5M views, matching the developer 11-06's announced 20k downloads, with the timing lining up exactly with the chart jump.

- **The finished image is the ad** : each prefecture is a collage of photos rather than a single crop, so it reads as a piece of work. People were willing to repost and imitate it, and the developer didn't have to write any copy.

- **The collecting urge of "filling the map" + the fun of choosing within a 20-item limit:** reviews repeatedly mention "it's fun to be selective with 20 slots", "the places you've been keep piling up", and "it made me want to travel more."

- **Fast iteration by the developer and public responses to requests** : 11-04 1.3.1, 11-05 1.4.0 shipped the "multiple maps by companion or theme" feature that commenters had asked for. Requests collected directly in X replies, and the Taiwanese page also noted that "the creator ships often."

- **Free to use; the subscription only sells export extras and multiple maps** : no account signup, and photos stay on the device, which lowers the barrier to trying it. Pro sells backgrounds, textures, frames, fonts, and unlimited maps. Climbing to #7 in the Travel Top Grossing chart shows people are paying.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with the predecessors Travel Memory Map (旅行思い出マップ) and 経県値: Lumap differs in that **(1) each prefecture or country is a collage of photos from a trip, a "piece of work" rather than a crop of one photo or a flat color block; (2) it offers both a Japan map and a world map; (3) on export you can choose backgrounds, paper stock, frames (Polaroid or stamp), and Mincho or handwritten fonts, producing a finished image you can post straight to social media; (4) mini-games (a falling-prefecture puzzle) and widgets.** The differentiation centers on "looks good and is shareable," which is exactly why one image blew it up. Differentiation and growth are the same thing here. But the features themselves are easy to copy (the predecessor already has 80% of this), so the moat is aesthetics and the developer's personal reach, not technology.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Revenue isn't public. The developer only shared 20K downloads and "#2 in Travel category." No media coverage found, and TrustMRR and similar trackers have no record.

- Modest spread within Japan's indie dev and travel circles on X (2.5M views on the single post, with fellow developers congratulating in the replies).

- No clear copycats spotted yet. JPphoto was listed before the viral post, and other similar apps already existed. Expect Japanese developers with similar apps to quickly add a "collage + export styling" feature.

### 7. Takeaways

- Run build-in-public posts on X's Japanese side as an indie developer sharing finished screenshots, and let the images do the talking. One post can drive tens of thousands of downloads.

- Pick categories that naturally produce shareable images (map coloring, collecting, annual recaps). Make the exported image the product's most polished part, and put the premium export styles behind the subscription.

- Take a proven small category (Travel Memory Map, 140K downloads) and redo it with aesthetics and a collage format, rather than hunting for a new need.

- Give the overseas storefront an English name (Lumap: Travel Photo Map) so that secondary sharing can reach markets like Taiwan and Thailand, where people love Japan travel.

### 8. Uncertain

- Revenue scale: ranked #7 on the Travel Top Grossing chart, where the bar is low in Japan. The amount is unverified, and subscription pricing wasn't checked.

- The 10-31 and 11-01 libraries lack data, and the source of the 11-02 wave is unconfirmed (possibly the developer's own posts from mid-to-late October, or Instagram or TikTok).

- Retention after the viral post: whether the rating growth can hold depends on the next one to two weeks.

- Whether there was paid promotion (whether App University's post was a paid partnership) is unverified.
