32 ratings, climbed to #2 Top Grossing in Saudi navigation: a Hail local's desert map that wins by "charging 89 riyals once"
What it is An offline satellite map in Arabic for desert camping in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. It's free to download, and the premium features are a one-time purchase of 89 riyals.
Why it took off In a niche where everyone charges an annual subscription, it switched to a one-time purchase at a higher price. The developer promoted it through his own TikTok account and small creators giving away memberships, and it launched just as the Saudi rainy and winter camping season began.
CHow you could approach it Don't copy the desert map. Find a seasonal outdoor niche you know well where a subscription app is already making money. Get in with a one-time purchase and a more deeply localized version, shoot your own videos, use small creators for reviews, and launch before the season starts.

Sultan Albulayhi, an indie developer from Hail in northern Saudi Arabia, released an offline map called "الخوي" for desert camping on Sep 21. On launch day he posted a demo video on TikTok that got 245k views. Six weeks later it has only 32 ratings, yet it ranks between #2 and #4 on the Saudi App Store navigation Top Grossing chart, behind a single incumbent that has been around for a year and a half and has a hundred times more ratings. Below: what it is, where the money comes from, why it ranks so high with so few ratings, and whether you can follow the same approach.
A video with 245k views
On Sep 21, the TikTok account @talal7444 posted a video captioned "تطبيق ( الخوي ) متوفر على ( الاب ستور ) محاكاة فعلية لنظام الملاحة", which means "The الخوي app is now on the App Store, a real simulation of the navigation system." The hashtags were #ربيع (spring), #امطار (rain), #الوسم (rainy season), #مكشات (camping) and #حايل (Hail). By Nov 6 the video had 245k views, 4,229 likes and 1,100 shares (TikTok, 11-06).
This isn't a marketing account. Looking back, May posts were about rain and off-road driving in Hail. Sep 17 is when the launch teasers started, and Oct 29 still had "today's clouds after the rain in Hail." The profile bio links to the App Store, with 798 followers. A local account with under a thousand followers launched an app.
The numbers on his later posts are a bit odd: one Sep 25 video got 250k views and only 822 likes; an Oct 20 video got 120k views and only 126 likes. The like rate is 0.1%–0.3%, an order of magnitude below the Sep 21 video, which suggests the views were bought through TikTok's built-in boost (speculation, unverified). The Sep 26 video about the rain radar says "launch price ٧٩," meaning the launch price is 79 riyals.
What it is
"الخوي" means "buddy, pal" in Saudi colloquial Arabic, and it's also a common word in the desert camping (كشتة) community. The first line of the store page reads "الخوي — رفيقك في البر," meaning "your companion in the wild."
The core is a map built for the desert: satellite imagery, 90k+ valleys, mountains and place names, a "white map" (roads, sand, riverbeds) that works without a connection, protected-area boundaries with intrusion alerts, live location sharing with companions in friend rooms, user-uploaded photos showing "where it rained, where grass grew, where water pooled" (added to the map after manual review), voice navigation in Saudi dialect, a landmark-based guide called "الدليل," and CarPlay and Dynamic Island support. It covers Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, Jordan, Iraq and Syria.
One person shipped 6 versions in 6 weeks (App Store version history: 9-24, 9-26, 10-03 plus CarPlay, 10-09, 10-14 plus dialect voice and the white map, 10-30 plus hiking mode and track videos). The code was almost certainly AI-written (inferred). Under the same account, he also published two more apps in October: a Hail local guide with a rain radar, and a school platform. There's no website, and the privacy policy sits on a free Netlify page.
Where the money comes from: no subscription, one purchase of 89
Free users get satellite imagery, place names, white maps and SOS. Offline downloads, 3D terrain, friend rooms and voice navigation require the "الخوي المميز" upgrade, SAR 89 (about $24), a one-time purchase, lifetime access. The store page and the bloggers' voiceovers repeat this line: pay once, no subscription, no renewal.
Compare with the rivals on the same chart (App Store Saudi Arabia store, 11-06):
| App | Launched | Rating | Paid | navigation top grossing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desert Maps: Navigator Offline | 2025-02 | 3,716 | annual subscription SAR 39.99 | charted #1–3,11-03 and 11-04 on the Saudi overall Top Grossing, peaking at #184 and #188 |
| الخوي | 2026-09 | 32 | one-time purchase SAR 89 | 10-28 to 10-31, #2,11-03 at first, then #4 |
| رحَّال Rahhal | 2023-02 | 785 | weekly SAR 14.99 / yearly SAR 119.99 | #6–18 |
| الخلاوي | 2025-08 | 14 | paid download SAR 39.99 | #15 |
32 ratings against 3,716 ratings, yet the ranks sit side by side. The reason is price per sale: الخوي costs as much per sale as Desert Maps's multi-year subscription. Saudi navigation is a niche category, and the top 5 on its grossing chart don't need many sales. At a high price, a few dozen sales can push it up. Actual daily sales aren't visible from outside; by rank, my estimate is a few dozen a day (estimate).
In Kuwait it has peaked at #6 on the navigation Top Grossing chart (10-29), and it has also charted in Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain. In those countries its rating count is 0, which suggests a lower bar where a few sales are enough to chart.
Why now
Three things stacked together:
- Seasonality. In Saudi Arabia the "الوسم" rain season starts in mid-October and runs through rain-watching, spring grass and winter camping until March. The developer launched in late September, just ahead of the season, and every video rides the rain and camping topics.
- Self-shot content, with local bloggers doing the talking. Besides his own account, camping and off-road bloggers with a few thousand followers post reviews on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X. One blogger, Abu Jood (@mssm0080,5,961, 89 followers), says in his voiceover "فقط ب 89 ريال" (only 5 riyals), and says he'll host a weekend Snapchat livestream, giving away 4,340 lifetime memberships. A YouTube channel with 10-21 subscribers posted a premiere review that got only 326 views. These accounts are small, and they look like membership-for-review deals; whether they were paid is unverified.
- A one-time purchase looks "cheap" next to subscriptions. For people who only go to the desert a few times a year, an annual subscription is the most annoying option. "SAR 89 once" makes the decision easy, and for the developer it means a higher price per sale.
That's all I could find: no press coverage, no major X accounts, no public revenue. Very few people know about it.
What users say
Among the 5 recent reviews, 4 are 1-star (10-27 to 10-30):
"The subscription is too expensive, please lower the price of the app."
"I don't see the app adding anything new, and the subscription is overpriced for features that nearly-free apps already have."
"The new satellite images never show up clearly."
The only 3-star review says "it works great in the wild, it just lacks navigation once you're on the road."
This tells you two things: plenty of people came in through the video and left once they saw 89, while the core players are the ones who pay. And the underlying data, satellite imagery and place databases, Desert Maps has too (it also claims 90k locations), so it's not a moat. What actually sets الخوي apart is the one-time purchase, community photos and friends' rooms, fast updates, and dialects. Those give creators something to talk about and make people feel 89 is worth it, but they don't drive growth on their own.
Who it's competing with
It's not that there are no rivals; the rivals are mature. Desert Maps has 3,716 ratings on iOS in the Saudi store, 498k installs on Google Play and 7 new installs over 6,366 days (Google Play, 11-06). The veteran Rahhal has 785 ratings. There's also the 2012-year-old paid GPS الدليلة, the general-purpose OsmAnd and Organic Maps, and the traditional Garmin handhelds the community uses. In the same season, two similar new apps appeared (خرائط المقناص from 10-09 and دليل - بوصلة البر from 10-20). That doesn't look like copying; it looks like everyone is watching the rain season.
The one visible gap it leaves is no Android version. Instagram comments include people asking directly when it's coming to Android. But Android isn't empty: Desert Maps already has nearly 500k installs there.
If it were you
Verdict: C. There's a clean playbook to learn here, but this niche isn't worth squeezing into. The Saudi desert map market already has an established leader with a well-run annual subscription. الخوي got in as the number two by riding local identity, seasonality and a high ticket price, and it has only 32 ratings, so its scale is small.
Good fit for: people already inside a seasonal outdoor community (desert, fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking) whose native language is one big apps haven't properly served, who can shoot their own videos and know small bloggers in the scene.
Bad fit for: outsiders who want to copy a Saudi/Gulf desert map directly (no local place names or dialect, no Hail-based accounts to borrow, and a head-on fight with Desert Maps), or anyone wanting to build "an Android الخوي" (Desert Maps already holds Android).
How to do it: find a niche local category where an annual-subscription app is already making money (check the local App Store's category Top Grossing top 10; few ratings but high rank is the signal), build a version with matching features and stronger localization, and enter with a one-time purchase priced around what rivals charge over two years of subscriptions. Use AI for fast, frequent iterations, and give bloggers something new to show each version.
How to get users: open a real vertical account yourself, post demo videos of real use on launch day with seasonal keywords in the tags, trade "win a lifetime membership" for reviews from local vertical bloggers with a few thousand followers, and spend a bit on boosting the videos that gain traction.
When to launch: seasonal categories need to launch 3–4 weeks before the season starts. Saudi's season has already begun, so a similar app would be best timed for next September. For other regions, follow their own seasons.
Signs you read it wrong: ① in mid-rain season (12 to January) الخوي drops out of the top 10 on the Saudi navigation Top Grossing chart, which means the one-time-purchase wave has sold out and neither repeat nor new buyers are holding it up; ② Desert Maps launches a one-time tier or cuts its price, which means the one-time purchase is really taking its customers, so the playbook works; ③ الخوي ships an Android version and gets tens of thousands of installs on Google Play, which means the niche is bigger than it looks and worth re-evaluating.

الخوي (Al-Khoy, iOS 6813629811) research report
In one line: an indie developer in Hail (حائل), Saudi Arabia, Sultan Albulayhi (copyright credited to "أبو بندر"), built an offline satellite map for desert off-roading and camping (كشتة). It's iOS-only, free to download, with a one-time SAR 89 purchase for "الخوي المميز". Launched 2026-09-21, with only 32 ratings, it charted at #2–#4 on the Saudi Navigation Top Grossing chart, at one point ahead of the veteran Desert Maps, which has 3,700 ratings and has been out for a year and a half. Three things stacked to make it work: the developer's own TikTok demos (one video hit 245k views on launch day) plus Saudi camping/off-road bloggers' reviews and giveaways of lifetime memberships; a one-time purchase looks cheap in a category full of annual subscriptions, while the ticket is high; and it timed the start of Saudi's "الوسم" rain season and the winter camping season. The product itself updates very fast (6 versions in 6 weeks, with CarPlay, Dynamic Island, dialect voice navigation and offline white maps), but its features largely overlap with rivals, and negative reviews say "nothing new, too expensive." Almost nobody is paying attention to it yet.
1. How to read the data card
- Ratings: 32 in Saudi Arabia, average 4.09 (iTunes lookup, 2026-11-06); 2 in the US store. From 10-28 to 11-06 the all-store count rose from 14 to 31, about 0–5 per day (appstore library app_day). The rating count is small: Saudi users don't often leave ratings, and the app doesn't seem to prompt for them well.
- Saudi Navigation category chart (appstore library chart_rank):
- Top Grossing: 10-28 to 10-31, #2, 11-01 and 11-02 at #3,11-03 at first, then #4.
- Top Free: 10-28 at #4, then slid steadily to #16 by 11-06.
- So the peak in downloads and revenue came in late October, before our library started collecting, and it's been gradually declining since.
- Other Gulf countries: in Kuwait, its best Navigation Top Grossing rank was #6 (10-29); Qatar #15; UAE #11-05 at #25; Bahrain and Oman have charted on Top Free (appstore library). These countries have only 0 ratings, so the bar for charting is low and a few sales are enough.
- Comparison on the same chart (Saudi Arabia, 2026-11-06, appstore library app_profile):
- Desert Maps: Navigator Offline (Rachid Smet, listed 2025-02): 3,716 rating, 7 days +80, Top Grossing #1–3,11-03 and 11-04, and also hit the Saudi overall Top Grossing chart (#184, 188).
- الخوي: 31 ratings, 7 new over 12 days, Top Grossing #4.
- رحَّال Rahhal (2023-02): 785 ratings, Top Grossing #6–18.
- Al-Khawi (2025-08, paid SAR 39.99): 14 ratings, #2 on Top Paid, #15 on Top Grossing.
- Dividing revenue by ratings, الخوي earns far more per rating than Desert Maps, and the reason is price per customer: one-time purchase at SAR 89 (launch promo was SAR 79, per the developer's TikTok 9-26), while Desert Maps is SAR 39.99 a year.
- Pricing: the only in-app purchase is "الخوي المميز SAR 89.00" (apps.apple.com/sa page).
- Developer: Sultan Albulayhi also has "مسنع" (2026-10-08, Hail local guide + rain radar, msana.net, 11 ratings) and "Fusul" (school platform, 2026-10-25). Privacy policy is hosted on khoiy.netlify.app, with no official website. A classic solo developer.
- Iteration speed (App Store version history): 1.1 9-24 → 1.2 9-26 (community photos, offline navigation, Dynamic Island, star calendar) → 1.3 10-03 (CarPlay) → 1.4 10-09 → 1.5 10-14 (landmark-description guide "الدليل", dialect voice, UTM/MGRS, protected areas, offline white maps, Iraq and Syria) → 1.5.1 10-30 (hiking mode, track videos, GPX editing). One person shipping 6 versions every 6 weeks almost certainly used AI to write code (inferred).

| Garmin handheld units (قارمن) | Hardware | — | — | The traditional choice in the community. Competitors all market themselves as "replacing Garmin" (TikTok: "يغنيك عن القارمن بـ 39 ريال"). |
New launches in the same wave (appstore library, Saudi, from 2026-08 onward, Navigation / Travel / Weather categories): خرائط المقناص (Khalaf Alenazi, 10-09) and دليل - بوصلة البر (Fahad Alluhaybi, 10-20). Names and positioning are close, but there's no sign they copied الخوي specifically. They look like apps that surfaced together in the same season.
Bottom line: it isn't that there's no competition. The competition is mature, and there's already an established leader with solid annual revenue. الخوي squeezed into a local niche that has already been proven profitable.
3. Where users come from
- Developer's own TikTok account @talal7444 (App Store link in the bio, 798 followers, TikHub 2026-11-06):
- 9-17 teaser (16k views).
- 9-21 launch day: "محاكاة فعلية لنظام الملاحة" demo video, 245k views, 4,229 likes, 1,100 shares.
- 9-25:245k → 251k views, but only 822 likes (likes / views 0.3%).
- 9-26: radar feature "سعر تدشين ٧٩" (launch price 79).
- 10-20:120k views, 126 likes (0.1%).
- A 798-follower account pulling six-figure views with such a low like rate suggests 9-25 and 10-20 were likely boosted with paid TikTok Promote (inferred, not verified). 9-21 had a high share rate and looks more like organic traction. Hashtags are all riding rain-season and camping-season topics: #الوسم #امطار #ربيع #كشته #مقناص #حايل.
- Camping / off-road creator reviews + giveaways:
- Instagram / TikTok @mssm0080 (Abu Jood, 5,961 followers): "الجزء الأول" review, calling it "فقط ب 89 ريال". Another post says he went live on Snapchat (بالأصفر) on the weekend to explain it, and gave away 5 lifetime memberships.
- YouTube "أبو قمر 966" (4,340 subscribers): 10-21 premiere review, 326 views.
- X @Hasan_201307:10-24 "شرح تطبيق الخوي" video post.
- A Facebook repost of the same review.
- These accounts are all small (a few thousand followers), a typical local pattern of membership-for-promotion or small paid deals. Whether money changed hands is unverified.
- Store search: "الخوي" is Saudi colloquial for "buddy, pal," and it's also common slang in كشتة camping culture. The name is easy to remember, and the spoken call-to-action "ابحث «الخوي»" gets people to it directly. The Navigation category is cold in Saudi, so reaching the top 5 on Top Grossing is enough for visibility.
- Timing: Saudi "الوسم" rain season begins in mid-October, and winter camping and seeing spring grass run from October through March. The developer in Hail launched in September, just ahead of the season.
- Not found: no media coverage, no major X accounts, no Meta ads (small Saudi developers aren't on our ad library tracking list, so a miss there doesn't mean no spend), no Apple editorial feature, no TrustMRR or public revenue. Local x-radar search for "تطبيق الخوي" returned 0 results.
4. Why people are willing to pay
- Pricing anchor: competitors charge annually (Desert Maps SAR 40 / year) or weekly (Rahhal SAR 15 / week), and users hate subscriptions. الخوي states plainly "شراء مرة وحدة — بدون اشتراك ولا تجديد" (one purchase, no subscription, no renewal). At SAR 89 (about $24) it's a lifetime license, and for someone who only hits the desert a few times a year, "buy once" is an easier decision. For the developer, the per-unit price is more than double a competitor's annual fee, which is why it climbs the Top Grossing chart quickly.
- The paywall sits on real needs: the free tier already shows satellite imagery, 90k place names, offline white maps, and SOS, so users get hooked. The things you actually need in the desert (offline downloads, 3D terrain, real-time friend-room locations, dialect voice navigation) are behind the paywall.
- High level of localization: ad copy and voice are in Saudi colloquial ("الخريطة البيضاء", "الجوّاد", the star calendar "تقويم العجيري", reserve-rule reminders, a search-and-rescue association mode). General-purpose map apps can't do this.
- Complaints center on price and expectations: of the 5 recent reviews from 10-27 to 10-30, 4 are 1-star and all say it's expensive, that people thought it was a subscription, that satellite imagery is unclear, and that there's nothing new (appstore library reviews). Many arrivals were drawn in by videos, saw the price, and left. The people who pay are the core players.
5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off
- The real differences: first, one-time purchase instead of subscription; second, a social and community layer: friend rooms, real-time location for group trips, and user-uploaded photos of rain, spring grass, and standing water (reviewed by hand before going on the map); third, fast updates that use native iPhone features (CarPlay, Dynamic Island, lock-screen navigation); fourth, dialect voice guidance and "الدليل" landmark-based descriptions.
- The underlying data is not a moat: satellite imagery, place-name databases, and sand tracks are all things Desert Maps has too (it also claims 90k POIs), and users say "other apps have these features too."
- Is that actually why it's making money?: its revenue ranking comes mainly from high-ticket one-time purchases + seasonality + self-run short videos. The differentiating features give creators something to talk about and give users a reason to feel it's worth 89, but they don't drive growth on their own. A rating of only 32 means the user base is tiny, and the Top Grossing spot is being carried by price.
6. How visible it is
Few people know about it: no media, no major X accounts, no public revenue. The only traces are the developer's own TikTok and a handful of local creators with a few thousand followers. Competitor Desert Maps is two orders of magnitude bigger.
7. What to borrow
- In an obscure local category already proven profitable by annual-subscription products, a one-time purchase priced at about two years of a competitor's annual fee lets it in with a low bar. A few dozen sales can land it in the category's top 5 on Top Grossing.
- Run a vertical TikTok account, post a real-world demo on launch day, tag seasonal topics (rain season, camping), and use Promote to boost once the videos gain traction.
- Find local vertical creators with a few thousand followers and trade reviews for "N lifetime memberships" giveaways. Almost zero cash cost.
- Use AI to iterate frequently, giving creators fresh material with every version (CarPlay, voice, track videos).
- Gap: no Android version. Instagram comments have people asking directly for an Android build. Android users in the Gulf currently only have Desert Maps (498k installs on Play).
8. Still unclear
- Actual revenue: Top Grossing category rank 2–4, not in the overall chart. Extrapolated to tens of sales a day. Unverified.
- Whether the two TikTok videos with low like rates and high views were paid boosts: unverified.
- Whether creator collaborations were paid or just free memberships: unverified.
- We don't have chart and rating history from before 10-28, so the exact peak day is unclear. Based on the decline from #2 on 10-28 and #4 on Top Free afterward, the peak was probably in late October.
- Whether users stick around after the rainy season ends (March), and how strong the seasonality is.
