A Vienna solo developer's gold valuation app reached #49 on Poland's finance Top Grossing chart, but it hasn't really taken off

Dukat is an iPhone widget that launched on Oct 15. You tell it what gold coins, gold bars, or karat jewelry you have, and it works out roughly what they're worth today, using the premiums major dealers in your country publish. On Nov 6 it charted at #49 in the Poland store's Finance Top Grossing chart, yet it has zero ratings so far, and the Android version has 10+ downloads. That chart position is a low bar: a few 29,99 zł one-time purchases are enough to get there. The product idea is worth a look, but the app itself hasn't broken out yet.

People lining up to buy gold coins now want to know what their coins are worth

In Oct 2025 15, Poland's national mint, Mennica Polska, posted on its website: lines were forming outside all 17 of its stores nationwide, and the previous week was its highest-revenue week of the year, beating the record set in April. That year gold rose 67.4% (Forsal, 2026-10-14).

By January 2026 29, the gold price had surged to about $5,595 an ounce, followed by the sharpest quarterly pullback since 2013. By November 5 it was $4,089 (Trading Economics), about 27% below the peak.

The people who lined up to buy coins near the high now want to know one thing: how much can I get back if I sell this coin to a dealer? The reminder in Forsal's October article was blunt: even if gold rises to the top of year-end forecasts, physical gold bought before year-end could still lose money, because you paid a premium when buying and the dealer's buyback price is lower when you sell.

Most gold price apps only tell you "how many dollars per ounce" and can't answer this question. That's what Dukat is trying to answer.

What it is

The first line of the store page reads "What your gold is worth today, in your country, at your local dealer's prices". The method has three steps: take the international spot price, calculate the gold content from each item's purity and weight, then add the premium publicly listed by the country's major dealers to get a reference price.

• My gold: the same coin bought at different times, with each purchase recorded at the actual price at the time, no averaging, and you can see what you'd get back on sale and how much you've made.
• No account, no ads, no tracking; holdings stay only on your phone.

The developer, SELCUK TUNCEL, is based in Vienna and also has a scoring app and a cosmetics shelf-life app, both with single-digit ratings. The official site sits on an Expo-hosted domain, which suggests it was built with React Native/Expo by one person. Three weeks after launch it reached 1.4.0, and the latest update notes say "adapted for the iPhone Duo's large screen, more stable widgets".

How much it grew

It charts on and off, then jumped to #49 six days apart, the classic sign of a day with one or two sales. Look at its neighbors: #48 is a 13F portfolio tracker, #50 is Money Pro, #56 is a generic gold price app, and the Polish store has only 10 ratings. In that spot, a handful of one-time purchases gets you on the chart. My guess is it earns somewhere between a few dozen and a couple hundred dollars a month (Apple doesn't publish revenue, so this is an estimate).

Its home market is Austria. The similar Goldpreis & Silberpreis Heute sits at #46 in the Austrian finance Top Grossing chart and Goldblick at #86. Dukat isn't on it.

Where the money comes from

The free version shows prices for every country, but caps you at 4 price cards, 3 holdings and 2 alerts at once. Dukat Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription: zł 29,99 in Poland, € 6,99 in Austria. It unlocks daily push notifications, widgets, holding history charts, invoice archiving and a 'porcelain' theme.

For people who hoard physical gold, this pricing fits. They tend to be conservative, care about privacy and hate subscriptions, so 'pay once, your data stays on your phone' is a real selling point. The catch is a low ceiling: a user who pays once for €7 over a lifetime needs a very large user base to sustain the business, and Dukat doesn't have that yet.

Where users come from

All that's visible is the App Store itself. Its titles use local search terms per store: 'Dukat: Goldpreis & Silberpreis' in the German store, 'Gold Price Tracker' in the UK store. In Apple's 'Customers also bought', it sits alongside Karat and Gold Price Today: Calculator, gold price apps that launched around the same time, which suggests some users arrive through gold price searches and recommendations.

No ads found, and nothing on social platforms. That's the opposite of Goldblick, its closest rival.

Who it's competing with

This space is crowded. Several new entrants launched in Germany and Austria this year, Turkey has established players many times larger, and Poland has free live price comparison sites. Dukat's one distinctive feature is covering 13 countries in a single app, with local coins and dealer premiums for each. But spreading across 13 countries makes every market thin, and none of them has outperformed single-country competitors.

Goldblick is a counterexample. It only does Germany and grows through Turkish-German jewelers and TikTok creators. For physical gold buyers, local channels work better than multiple languages.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, not worth copying. 'Convert the international gold price into what I'd get for this coin, here, selling to a dealer' is a real need, and it's arguably more relevant now that gold has fallen from its peak. But Dukat hasn't proven anyone will pay for it. A one-time €7 purchase has a low ceiling, and Germany, Austria, Turkey and Poland each already have someone serving them, some of them for free.

Who it suits: indie developers familiar with a single major gold-jewelry market, such as India, the Gulf, Vietnam or Malaysia, who can get actual local jeweler quotes and are willing to find users in local communities and short videos.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to build a multi-country, multi-language version of Dukat in Europe. That market is already packed, as Dukat itself shows.

How to do it:

1. Stick to one country and turn 'is this quote fair?' into a number: the international price, the gold content, the local jeweler's buy and buyback prices, both shown side by side.
2. Use the categories and units locals recognize, such as 22K and tola in India, chỉ and lượng in Vietnam, Çeyrek in Turkey, not just price per ounce.
3. Per-purchase holding logs, invoice archiving and price alerts are worth copying straight from Dukat. They're useful to people who hoard gold.
4. You could sell a one-time purchase, or try 'free prices, paid holdings and alerts'. This audience dislikes subscriptions.

How to get users: Copy Goldblick, not Dukat. Find local jewelers and personal finance creators on short video, with content like 'here's what this coin would fetch from a jeweler today', plus local-keyword ASO. Every big swing up or down in gold is a moment to post.

When to get in: There's no hard window. Physical gold is a long-term habit, not a one-off trend. But searches and downloads peak when gold prices are volatile, so the product needs to be live before then.

What would show I'm wrong: If in three months Dukat holds a steady spot in Poland's or Austria's finance Top Grossing top 50 and its ratings climb into the dozens or hundreds, it would mean per-country dealer premiums alone can drive payments, and a multi-country approach works, which would make this worth revisiting as B. Conversely, if it stays at 0 ratings with sporadic chart appearances, the conclusion is: the demand is real, but a product without local channels won't take off.
