# A one-star review, and four days later it became a feature: how a one-person land-measuring app reached the top four in search in a decade-old category

**What it is** An iOS land-measuring tool: tap the corners on a satellite map or walk the boundary with your phone to get area and perimeter, then calculate how much fence, gravel, or concrete you need, and produce a quote PDF. You can't see the results without a subscription.

**Why it took off** Measuring land area is a need people search for year-round, but the top of the App Store is full of 2011–2017-year-old apps. It used native Apple Maps, a clean interface, and titles with search terms written separately for each language. Within a month of launch it ranked in the top four for core keyword searches, then sold high-priced subscriptions through material estimates and quotes that contractors can use.

**B** 58 **How you could follow** Don't copy the land measurement head-on. Learn the method: find a tool category with steady search demand and older apps in the top ten (roofing, flooring materials, slope, snow removal, pools, etc.), build a clean native version, write search-term titles separately for each language, add material estimates and quotes, and price it as professional software for people who earn a living from it.

Follow-on score 58: almost nobody is paying attention to it. The method is clear, one person can do it, it needs no big-company resources or celebrity, and it can be applied to other categories, industries, or markets. Deductions: land measurement itself is already taken by it and GPS Fields, revenue is still small (estimated under $5K/month), the contractor software step isn't open for signups yet and faces established rivals like SiteRecon, and the 10–November traction may be seasonal. Hardly anyone knows about it yet

Nathan Burnett, an indie developer in Massachusetts, released AreaMap on Sep 29. A few taps on a satellite map tell you how many acres a piece of land covers. People built this category a decade ago, and much of the shelf is 2011 to 2017-year-old apps and template clones. Five weeks after launch, AreaMap ranked #4 for "measure land area" in the US App Store. Its ratings went from 106 in Oct 28 to 162 in Nov 6. The annual fee is $69.99, and without a subscription you can't even see the results. It hasn't run any paid ads we can find, and no one online is talking about it. Below: what it is, why it ranked, where the money comes from, where it's going, and whether you could do the same.

### A paver raised a point

In Nov 1, a US user gave AreaMap three stars with the title "Swell percentage and waste". He was talking about paving jargon: base gravel has to be 4 inches thick after compaction, but you have to lay it at 5 inches. The app quoted him materials for 4 inches, "underestimating by 25%".

The Nov 5,1.4.5 version shipped, and the release notes' second line read: "Extra for compaction on gravel and road base". The same version also added "Horse fence with flex rail".

Going back through the reviews, one five-star from Oct 14 said: "Already using it in my business, I send snow removal quotes with it, and the quotes make me stand out from my competitors." Another from Oct 15: "There's a lot of measuring to do on a job, and this app does the work for me. Don't tell my boss."

These reviews show who the users are: not people curious about how big their backyard is, but fencing, paving, landscaping, and snow removal contractors who earn their living from measuring and quoting land.

### What it is

Open the app, search an address or coordinates, tap the corners of the plot on the satellite map, and the area, perimeter, and length of each side appear right away. You can also walk the boundary with your phone, and it keeps recording the GPS track with the screen locked. After measuring, it calculates materials (fence posts and rails, sod, grass seed, mulch, soil, gravel, concrete) and produces a PDF with a map, scale, coordinates, material list, and photos, or exports KML, GPX, GeoJSON, or CSV. It uses Apple's own maps, supports 3D tilt up to 3D, and switches to Look Around where street view is available. It supports 13 languages and defaults to hectares and meters where the metric system is used.

The paywall is strict: the store listing says you can browse the map and draw shapes freely, but viewing measurement results, saving, walking the boundary, reports, exports, and material estimates all require Pro. In-app purchase options: weekly $9.99, monthly $14.99 / $19.99, yearly $69.99 / $79.99.

Developer Nathan Burnett published 5 apps under his own name from 2026 to September 7: the tick-risk forecast TickZone (18 ratings), the AI hypnosis app Wisp (5), the interactive fiction Slowburn (7), the travel-day tracker Roamer (0), and AreaMap (171). Each has its own standalone website (App Store search, 11-06). Of the five, only this one took off, and it's the one he updates most often.

### How big it is now

| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| US ratings | From 10-28 to 11-06 106 rating, 162,4.6 stars; daily new ratings rose from 1 to 12–13 | App Store US |
| All-country ratings | 118 → 225, +66 in the last 7 days; charted in 10 → 17 countries | App Store, 10-28 to 11-06 |
| US Utilities Top Free | 10-31 #107 → 11-05 #46, 11-06 #53 | App Store |
| US Utilities Top Grossing | 10-28 to 10-30 at ranks 104–136 | App Store |
| Search ranking | "measure land area" #4, "acre measure" #3 | App Store US search, 11-06 |
| Revenue, downloads | 10-02 to 11-01 estimated revenue under $5K, downloads under 5K | AppGazers estimate, unverified |

It ranks 15 and 19 on the Utilities Top Grossing charts in Ecuador and Colombia, but those two stores have only 1 and 3 ratings in total. Small-country charts have low thresholds, so they can't be used to estimate revenue.

There is also an Android app with the same name (developer credited as "Velocity apps", AppBrain shows 5,000+ downloads). The official site links to it directly, but from the outside you can't tell whether the iOS and Android versions are made by the same person.

### Why it ranked: the search box

No Meta ads were found for it. Searching its name on TikTok turns up only competitors' land-measuring videos. There's no mention on X, Reddit, Product Hunt, or in the media, only a few data sites that auto-scrape charts. The traffic almost certainly comes from App Store search:

- **The title spells out the search terms** . "AreaMap: Measure Land & Acres", subtitle "Field area calculator with GPS". The most common US search terms for measuring land are all in there.

- **Each language gets a locally written title, not just a translated interface** . In Mexico and Colombia it's "AreaMap: Medir Terreno y Área", in Brazil "Medir Terreno e Área", in France "Mesure de Terrain", in Germany "Flächen messen". That's why it shows up on the category charts of several small Latin American countries.

- **Stale shelves, so a new app stands out** . Search "measure land area" in the US store and, in the top 6, 4 of the apps are ones charted in 2011–2016 (Planimeter from 2011 with 2,216 ratings; GPS Land Measurement from 2013 with 3,008; GPS Fields Area Measure from 2016 with 13,114; Marea from 2016 with 4,811). The last one is a few-years-old copycat. Put the screenshots next to the old ones and a native app built in 2026 is easy to tap and easy to download.

- **The brand's site ran a set of free calculator pages** : acreage, fence, gravel, concrete, mulch, sod and topsoil calculators, plus an article on how to measure acres. A typical "free web tool drives App installs" play, but the pages only went live a month ago, so how much traffic they brought can't be verified.

One caveat: a hard paywall app can still have 4.6 stars, usually because the rating prompt fires right after the user finishes their free measurements and subscribes (inferred). On Oct 2 it got 8 five-star reviews, three days after launch, and the text is short ("Great", "Works great", "Super handy"), which likely means early friends-and-family or cold-start ratings (inferred). For real word of mouth, look at the reviews from mid-October on that describe a specific use.

Whether it ran Apple Search Ads can't be checked from outside. Lots of apps in this category buy search ads, so it can't be ruled out.

### Where the money comes from and where it goes

The consumer version is a subscription. The paywall comes early, and that's where the complaints concentrate. A Canadian one-star reads "Another paid app... it's all subscription"; a US two-star from Nov 4 reads "I'd use it if it weren't a subscription. Give us a free ad-supported tier, or sell a one-time Pro unlock."

The interesting part comes later. Over five weeks it moved from a land-measuring tool toward contractor software:

1. Area measurement → material estimate → quote PDF (inside the App);

2. **Team plan** : $99 per seat per year, 2 to 500 people. The boss sends one link, workers open it on their phones and get Pro, tasks and quotes are shared across the crew, and invoices can be sent for payment (official site /teams);

3. **AreaMap Business** : a web app, an estimating tool for "fence and paving contractors." In the office you trace driveways and parking lots over aerial imagery, and it auto-calculates "good / better / best" quotes from your own price list. The client signs on their phone, signed jobs land on a board and get dispatched to workers' phones. There's also a "homeowner self-quote" page that embeds into the contractor's own website. The official demo shows a church parking lot at 35,594 sq ft net, with three tiers at $4,786 / $9,786 / $9,933. Pricing: $24/worker/month, $149–299/office user/month.

The Business page still says "Sign up opens soon" with no open signup, only a 20-minute demo call. So for now this part is an opportunity, not revenue.

Whether this move makes sense depends on ticket size: the consumer version is $70 per person per year, while a contractor company with one office and four workers starts at $2,450 a year. Using free App Store search traffic to find contractors and then selling them web SaaS is a structure that works. But the competition is SiteRecon and Go iLawn, which already do "aerial measurement + quoting" for contractors. It's not empty ground.

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Scale | Compared with AreaMap |
|---|---|---|
| GPS Fields Area Measure Map (on iOS since 2016) | US iOS 13,113 rating, Brazil 31,119; Android 26.8M installs | Category leader, skews to farms and Latin America; dated UI, no materials or quoting; not on the US Utilities charts right now |
| FieldCalc(2017) | iOS US 10,266 ratings | Indian developer, lots of features, doesn't target contractors |
| Map Area Calculator – Marea(2016) | iOS US 4,811 ratings | General measuring |
| Planimeter(2011) | US iOS 2,216 rating, $17.99 one-time purchase, Utilities Top Paid 59 | Established, one-time purchase, dated UI |
| New entrants in 2026 such as TruePlot, Acreage, GeoAcre, GeoMeasure | 0–9 ratings | Same-period newcomers, almost none took off |
| Web tools like daftlogic and Mapulator | Free, strong search ranking | No phone-based boundary tracing or reports |
| Google Maps / Google Earth measuring | Everyone has it | Free, but no acreage reports and no material estimates |

On US Utilities charts (11-06). Among its peers, only Planimeter is on Top Paid, and AreaMap is the highest-ranked free land-measuring app. A dozen or so land-measuring apps launched in the same period and none took off, which suggests this isn't a category on the rise. It's that this app is doing better than its peers. No one appears to be copying it yet.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict** : you can follow it, but follow the method, not this app. This land-measuring slot is already taken. What's worth copying is "find a tool category with steady demand and stale shelves, enter from search with a native interface and localized titles, then sell to the professionals who earn their living from it."

**Who it suits** : a solo developer who can write native iOS, who will study App Store search terms, and who can build a tool cleanly. Ideally someone who understands how the trade works (how quotes are made, the jargon, which parameter costs you money if it's wrong), so they can look at one review and know to add "compaction allowance" the way AreaMap did.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone hoping to break out through content, creators or trending topics (tools like this have no viral angle); anyone planning a free-with-ads model that wins on volume (the volume is small, so unit price is everything); anyone aiming to go head-on with the land-measuring category itself (AreaMap is already top four in search, and GPS Fields is deeply rooted with users in Brazil, Latin America and farming).

**How to do it** , three directions:

- **Change the category** : look in the App Store for tools with stable search terms, where the top ten are all apps from 2017 or earlier and ratings run in the thousands to tens of thousands. Related ideas include roof area and pitch, wall and floor materials, slope and elevation change, tree and timber volume, pool capacity, and solar panel layout. Each one can plug into the "material estimate → quote PDF" flow.

- **Change the audience** : take the same land-measuring tool and make it for one trade only. For example, snow removal only (seasonal pricing by area and visit count), lawn care only, or pesticide spraying only (acreage and dose). Narrow the features, get the jargon right, and price it like a professional tool.

- **Change the market** : AreaMap's localization just swapped the title. Farmland and construction quoting in Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia have their own units and habits (tsubo, mu, ri), and a version designed around how local people actually work beats a translation by a mile.

**How to get users** : the main channel is App Store search. Pack the two or three most-searched terms into the title and subtitle, research how locals search in each language and write the title separately for each, and make the first screenshot "enter an address → tap corners → get the number." Build a set of free web calculators on the official site (fence, gravel, concrete and similar) to catch the same demand in search engines, then route those visitors into the app. Put the rating prompt right after "first measurement completed." To speed things up, you could buy your core keywords on Apple Search Ads. Unit prices in this category won't be high (inferred).

**When to move** : no holiday rush, but get in before others notice. The window for this kind of opportunity is open while the first page of results is still mostly old apps. Once two or three new apps from 2026 push into the top five, it gets hard for latecomers.

**What would mean you read it wrong** :

- AreaMap's US ratings added only 1–2 per day after December and it dropped out of the top 150 on the free chart. That suggests 10–November demand is seasonal (hunting, and fencing and paving wrap-up in fall), not steady search volume.

- Three months after AreaMap Business opened signups, the official site still can't show a single named contractor client. That suggests the route from "consumer tool" to "contractor software" isn't working, and the ceiling is the consumer subscription.

- A category you picked has been live for a month and your core keyword still isn't in the top ten. That suggests the shelves aren't as stale as you thought, or people aren't searching for the term you put in the title.

## AreaMap: Measure Land & Acres (iOS id6816359797), why it broke out

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our appstore / googleplay / metaads libraries (agent-im machine, data as of 2026-11-06), iTunes lookup/search APIs, the areamap.app website, Jina / TikHub / x-radar search.

### One line

A Massachusetts indie developer (Nathan La Mar Burnett, who shipped 5 apps in three months) picked an old category with constant demand, where the shelf was full of 2011–2017-year-old apps and Indian template clones: measuring land area from satellite maps. He built a native Apple MapKit version with a clean UI, 13 languages, and a hard paywall ($69.99/year). Through **store search ASO** , it reached #4 for "measure land area" and #3 for "acre measure" within a month, then extended into fence and paving contractor quoting tools and a team plan ($99/seat/year). No ads, influencers, media or community spread found.

### 1. Basic data

- Launched 2026-09-29; current version 1.4.5 (2026-11-05). Several versions shipped within five weeks, with release notes moving from material estimation to "generate quote PDF," "client approves quote online," and "team shared jobs" (App Store page version history, read via r.jina.ai).

- Ratings: 166 in the US, 4.6 stars (iTunes lookup us, 2026-11-06); 225 across all storefronts combined.

- Growth (appstore library, app_day): US 10/28 106 → 11/6 162, daily new ratings rose from 1 to 12–13; all storefronts 10/28 118 → 11/6 225, +66 over the last 7 days, charting countries 10 → 17.

- Charts: US Utilities Top Free 10/31 107 → 11/5 46, 11/6 53; 10/28–10/30 US Utilities Top Grossing 104–136 (appstore library). Ecuador and Colombia Utilities Top Grossing 15 / 19 (11/6), but those storefronts have only 1 / 3 ratings. Small countries have low bars and shouldn't be read as big revenue.

- Third-party estimate: AppGazers puts it at 2026-10-02 to 11-01 revenue <$5K and downloads <5K (appgazers.com US Utilities Top Free page).

- Pricing (App Store in-app purchase list): Pro weekly $9.99, monthly $14.99/$19.99, yearly $69.99/$79.99. The description says "drawing is free; viewing results, saving, GPS boundary tracing, reports, export and material estimates all require Pro," a **hard paywall** that doesn't even let you see results. The only review we captured (ca, 10/15,1 stars) complains about exactly this.

- Android version: com.velocityapps.areamapapp, developer name "Velocity apps" (also has older apps like Gallery Cleaner and Zen), AppBrain shows 5000+ downloads; our googleplay library doesn't cover it. The iOS and Android developer entities differ; the relationship is unverified.

### 2. Competitors

The same thing (tapping corners on satellite imagery to measure area / GPS-tracing boundaries) is a **very crowded old category** :

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How AreaMap differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPS Fields Area Measure Map(Rento UAB / Farmis) | iOS + Android | iOS 2016-06,Play 2013-12 | iOS US 13,113 ratings; Brazil 31,119 ratings, +165 in the last 7 days, Brazil Utilities Top Grossing 10; Play 26.8M installs, +49k in the last 7 days | Category leader, mainly farm and Latin American users; dated UI, built on Google Maps; no material estimation or quoting |
| FieldCalc(Pravin Gondaliya) | iOS + web | 2017-06 | iOS US 10,266 ratings | Indian developer, feature-stacked, no professional quoting focus |
| Map Area Calculator – Marea(Applorium) | iOS | 2016-12 | US 4,811 ratings | General map measuring, no construction materials or quoting |
| Planimeter(Core Signals) | iOS paid $17.99 | 2011-03 | US 2,216 ratings, US Utilities Top Paid 59 | One-time purchase, established professional feel, dated UI |
| GPS Land Measurement & Survey(Logisian) | iOS | 2013 | 3,008 rating | Indian template-style |
| Geo Field Area, GLand, Field Area Measure, Field MapS, etc. | iOS | 2021–2023 | 500–1,600 ratings | Look-alike clones |
| 2025–2026 new launches: TruePlot, Acreage (PocketKnife Apps, 2026-07), GeoAcre, GeoMeasure, Easy Area, VeasDei… | iOS | 2026-04 to 10 | 0–9 ratings | Most new entrants in the same period got little traction |
| daftlogic Map Area Calculator, Mapulator, etc. | Web | Years | Free | Free web tools, strong SEO |
| Google Maps / Google Earth "measure distance / area" | Big-company features | Years | Huge | Free, but no acre reports and no material estimates |

Key comparison: the only same-category app visible on any US Utilities chart is Planimeter (Top Paid 59). Old leaders like GPS Fields Area Measure are not charting in the US (appstore library, app_profile, us, 11/6). AreaMap currently has the best chart position of any free same-category app in the US.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence found)

- **Store search / ASO (confirmed)** : iTunes search 2026-11-06 US storefront, "measure land area" ranks #4, "acre measure" #3, ahead of Marea, FieldCalc, Planimeter and most older apps. The title packs in the two high-volume terms "Measure Land & Acres," and the subtitle reads "Field area calculator with GPS." Localized into 13 languages, with **local-keyword titles in each storefront** : Mexico / Colombia "AreaMap: Medir Terreno y Área," Brazil "Medir Terreno e Área," France "Mesure de Terrain," Germany "Flächen messen." This explains why small Latin American storefronts also show up on the charts.

- **Website SEO (exists, effect unverified)** : areamap.app's sitemap has only 14 pages, including acreage / fence / gravel / concrete / mulch / sod / topsoil calculators and how-to-measure-acreage. This is a textbook "free calculator drives installs to the app" play. The pages went live only a month ago, and how many installs they've brought in is unverified.

- **Rating prompts (inference)** : US 4.6 stars across 166 ratings, while negative reviews say "you have to pay to download." Hard-paywall products can hold high ratings usually because they prompt for a rating at key moments (after a measurement or subscription). Unverified.

- **Paid ads (none found)** : the metaads library has no advertiser or app link for AreaMap. Apple Search Ads can't be checked from outside. Search ads are common in this category, so they can't be ruled out.

- **Content / creators / community (none found)** : TikTok (TikHub search for "AreaMap app") has no videos for it, only competitors'; x-radar shows 60 posts in the last 0 days; Reddit / Product Hunt / media searches only turn up app-data aggregators (similarweb, apptopia, appgazers, searvia, etc.).

- **The developer's own portfolio (confirmed)** : the same developer shipped TickZone (tick-risk forecast, 18 rating), Wisp (AI hypnosis), Slowburn, and Roamer (travel-day counter) in quick succession 2026-07 to 09, each with its own standalone domain site. Classic "test many themes fast, double down on whichever gets traction". AreaMap is the only one that took off, and it also gets the most frequent version updates.

### 4. Why it charted

1. **Picked a category with steady demand and a stale shelf** : measuring land area is a long-running search need (buying land, fencing, lawns, hunting, farming). The top products are 2011–2017-year-old apps and Indian template clones. A new app with a modern interface can easily win on conversion.

2. **Clean ASO** : the title carries the core keywords "measure land / acres", each of 13 languages gets its own localized keywords, and within a month of launch it ranked in the top 4 for core keyword searches (iTunes search, 11/6).

3. **Native Apple Maps experience** : uses MapKit's 3D, Look Around street view, and lock-screen GPS to trace boundaries. Older competitors were mostly Google Maps wrappers, a visible difference in experience.

4. **Priced for high-willingness professional users** : material estimates (fence posts, gravel, concrete, sod), PDF reports, KML/GeoJSON export, aimed at fencing / landscaping / paving contractors and real estate agents. Annual $69.99, weekly $9.99. It's sold as productivity software, not as a small utility. Ranking in the US Utilities Top Grossing chart at 104–136 (10/28–10/30) shows people are paying.

5. **Fast iteration and expansion toward B2B** : in five weeks it went from area measurement → material estimates → quote PDFs → online client quote approval → team plans at $99/seat/year → web app AreaMap Business, "estimating software for fence and paving contractors". This pulls a consumer tool toward contractor SaaS (comparable to SiteRecon, Go iLawn).

6. **Seasonality (inferred)** : 10–November is the US hunting season and the fall fencing / paving wrap-up period, and the description names hunters and fencing crews. But no year-over-year comparison was done, so this is unverified.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with similar apps, it differs in: (a) a modern native iOS interface + Apple's 3D / Look Around; (b) after measuring it directly outputs construction material quantities, quotes, and team collaboration, making it a "contractor estimating tool" rather than just an area calculator; (c) localized titles across multiple languages. Is that why it took off: **partly** . Early traction came mainly from ASO plus a stale category shelf (which has nothing to do with material estimates; users searching "acres" will come regardless). Material estimates and quotes are there to **raise willingness to pay and average order value** , which determines whether it stays on the grossing charts and the ceiling for the later B2B push.

### 6. How visible it is

Hardly anyone knows about it yet: no TrustMRR listing or founder revenue posts, nothing on X / TikTok / Reddit / media, only appearances on app-data aggregators. AppGazers estimates monthly revenue at <$5K.

### 7. Copycats

No followers copying it were found. The similar newcomers launched around the same time, such as TruePlot, Acreage, GeoAcre, and GeoMeasure, are templated entrants already in the category. They launched before or at the same time, so they aren't copying it.

### 8. Takeaways

- In a tool category with steady demand, an aging top tier, and lots of clones, entering with a modern native interface, clean ASO, and localized titles in multiple languages can show results within a month.

- Push a small utility toward productivity software for a vertical professional audience (material estimates → quotes → team seats), pricing it like professional tools.

- Developer portfolio play: multiple themes, each with its own standalone site, test quickly and bet on whichever takes off.

- The website uses a set of free calculator pages for SEO traffic.

### 9. Uncertain

- Whether Apple Search Ads were run (can't be verified externally; common in this category).

- Real revenue and subscription conversion: only grossing chart ranks and AppGazers' <$5K estimate are available.

- How the Android version, "Velocity apps", relates to the iOS developer.

- How big the seasonal effect is, and whether traction holds after the hunting / fencing season ends.

- Whether the AreaMap Business web app has any customers.
