# A solo-built navigation app for Irish driving tests: it sells, but someone already built this road

**What it is** A navigation app for iPhone used by people learning to drive in Ireland. You pick a test centre, and it walks you through the routes you might be examined on, flagging roundabout lanes, speed limits and the spots where examiners often make you reverse or turn around. Pay from €9.99 per test window, one-time.

**Why it took off** In Nov 1 it expanded test centres from 23 to 51, and on the same day a new Irish learner-permit rule pushed around 38k people toward the test centres. The developer also self-promoted in the Reddit learner-driver community, and in this category a handful of sales is enough to chart.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy it in Ireland, the UK, Australia, Canada or New Zealand, where people already occupy the space. If you build it, partner with local driving school instructors, and go to a country or US state where no route app exists yet. Keep its model: clearly label recorded routes and charge once per test window.

Grade C: the demand is real and it makes money, but Turas itself is a late entrant. Anyone can collect route data and there's no moat. In English-speaking countries, Route-Led and instructor-made apps already cover most of the ground. Worth studying its pricing and how it labels routes, but following it isn't worth the effort. Few people know about it yet

Turas is an iPhone app that walks learner drivers through the routes they might be tested on around Irish test centres, with voice navigation. It launched 2026 Oct 19, is built by one developer, still has zero ratings, and spent a week in the Ireland Navigation Top Grossing chart. It shows two things: learners will pay to get familiar with test routes before the exam, and this business was already being run five years ago and is now crowded.

### The day of the Nov 1 change

From Nov 1 2026, Ireland's learner permit rules change: anyone applying for a third or fourth learner permit must have taken a driving test within the past two years. Per Irish Star's Oct 31 report, this pushes about 38k people who held learner permits for years without testing into the test center.

The same day, indie developer Maksym Myronenko released 1.1 of Turas. Test-centre coverage went from 23 to 51 (the website says "54 test centres, 51 covered"; the store listing says 55), and routes went from 274 to 616. He posted on r/Irishdrivingtest: "Thanks to your support my Ireland Driving Routes app has now x2 supported centres. Come and try Turas 1.1!"

Also that day, Turas first appeared in the App Store Ireland Navigation Top Grossing chart at #25; it moved up to #15 the next day.

### What it is

You open the app, pick your test centre, and press Go. It guides you through a test route the way car navigation does, except it calls out where learners usually go wrong: which lane to take at each roundabout, where the speed limit changes, STOP lines, yellow boxes, and where examiners are likely to ask for a reverse, a turn-around, or a hill start. It supports CarPlay, Dynamic Island and offline voice, and you can simulate a route at home first. The 1.1 version added a review after each drive (where you drove too slowly, stopped too long, or sped).

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) doesn't publish test routes. A test centre usually has a dozen or so fixed routes, and the examiner picks one on the day. Learners and driving instructors know roughly which routes are used, so "put the routes together and sell them to learners" became a business.

The pricing is simple: free to download, €30 for 9.99 days for a single centre, or €60 for 12.99 days, paid once with no renewal; €29.99 for lifetime access to all centres. The pricing page says: "Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel."

### Why people buy

The math works. A retest costs €85, and nationally the average wait for a test slot is about 11.7 weeks (testcentres.ie). The longest wait this year at the Raheny centre in Dublin was 25 weeks (Irish Times, 2026-06). Spending €10 to learn the roads before the test isn't expensive for someone who's waited three months. Ireland has about 388k learner permit holders (fleet.ie, 2026-06), and over 2025 years 220k+ people sat the test more than once nationally.

The chart bar is also low. In the Ireland Navigation Top Grossing chart, #2 The Irish Test Routes App has only 4 ratings (11-02), so a small number of sales is enough to reach the top 50. Turas went up to #11-02 and fell back to #15,11-06 and then #45, which roughly corresponds to a few sales a day (inferred).

Things it got right:

- **It was honest about what it is.** Each route is labelled "From real tests" (318 routes, recorded on test day) or "Practice route" (a practice route on the same roads). The website says "no app can be RSA-certified" and "routes are not AI-generated." The most common complaint about this category on Reddit is "these aren't real test routes, it's a scam," and Turas addresses that head on.

- **It filled the coverage gap.** 1.0 covered only 23 test centres, so many people who searched couldn't buy it. 1.1 expanded coverage to 51 centres at once, and it reached the top chart the same day.

- **It sold by test date.** Learners only need it for a few weeks, so a one-time "centre pass" is easier to accept than a subscription. A rival charges monthly, and people have complained about that on Reddit.

- **It picked the Navigation category.** The biggest rival sits in Education, so Turas, placed in the less crowded Navigation chart, reached the top 25 of the free chart within days of launch.

### Where users come from

Almost the only channel is the developer posting in the small r/Irishdrivingtest community. "Which route app is worth buying" and "is this a scam" come up over and over in that subreddit, and posting costs nothing.

Other channels are basically empty: it was posted on Product Hunt in Oct 29 and got 1 votes; you can't find it on X or TikTok; no media has covered it. The turas.pro website has a page for each test centre ("Killester 45 routes", "Finglas 43 routes", "Tallaght 35 routes"), which catches searches like "[centre name] driving test routes". How much traffic that brings in is unclear.

Meanwhile downloads are slowing. Free chart rank went from #10-28 to #24,11-06 and then #194. The novelty of the first two weeks and the Reddit traffic are fading, and the rating has stayed at 0, so the app apparently doesn't prompt users to rate it.

### Who it's competing with

Turas wasn't first, it came later:

| Product | Who made it | Launched | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving Test Routes | UK Route-Led, company | 2021-03 | UK 8,971 ratings, Ireland 412; Australia 585, Canada 269, New Zealand 106; Google Play 872k installs (11-06) |
| The Irish Test Routes App | Irish driving instructor Stephen McEvoy | 2022-03 | Ireland Navigation Top Grossing steady at #2–5; about 22k installs on Play; already has versions for Northern Ireland and US states Pennsylvania, Texas and New York |
| Driving Test Routes Ireland | Vavien Technology | 2025-12 | Ireland 46 ratings, Education Top Grossing #39–76 |
| Ireland Driving Test Routes | Individual developer Mohamed Fayed | 2026-03 | 3 ratings; his February "I made an app" post in the same subreddit got 93 upvotes and 29 comments |
| Irish Driving Test Routes IE | Volume developer VAROL AKSOY | 2026-03 | 14 ratings |
| The free way | Instructors' route videos on YouTube, drawn yourself in Google My Maps | — | The top-voted Reddit replies often say "don't buy, draw it yourself" |

The one to watch is Fayed: an individual developer who digitized routes from instructor videos and promoted the app on Reddit, using the same playbook as Turas, seven months earlier. McEvoy's brand promises "we work with instructors at all 56 test centres in the country, not AI guesses." In other words, anyone can collect route data, and no one has exclusive access. Turas beats the others with more detailed navigation and honest labelling, but that is a difference in experience, and it can't protect the position.

The same is true in other countries. Searching "driving test routes" on the App Store, the UK saw a dozen similar apps appear in 2026 years; Route-Led is in Australia, Canada and New Zealand and ranks in the free category charts there; McEvoy is already working through US states one by one.

### If it were you

**C: worth studying, not worth copying.** It's a real need and a business that can make money, but Turas is the sixth entrant in this niche, and it sold a few copies via a single Reddit post and a low-bar small chart. If you want to follow, you can copy what it has; what it lacks (an instructor network, a brand, an Android version) you won't have either.

- **Who it suits** : driving instructors who already teach in a country and have learners and routes, or developers who partner with instructors. Route data and learner trust are the hardest things to get in this business, and instructors have both. McEvoy got started that way.

- **Who it doesn't suit** : independent developers with no local connections who want to build routes from YouTube videos. In the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand you'll run into Route-Led, and in Ireland you'll also run into four or five similar apps.

- **How to do it** : if you're going to do it, look for places Route-Led doesn't cover and where the authority doesn't publish routes (non-English-speaking countries, US states nobody has covered yet; search the stores first to confirm). Get routes from local instructors and follow Turas's approach: label recorded and practice routes separately, call out lane choices and the moves examiners commonly test in navigation, and sell as a one-time purchase tied to the test date. There's one weakness in the existing competitors you can exploit: as early as 2022, UK learners were complaining on Reddit that a route app "dropped the voice when I took the wrong exit and never re-routed." Getting users back on route after a deviation is itself a selling point.

- **How to get users** : self-promote in local driving subreddits and Facebook groups; a web page per test centre that catches "[centre name] + test routes" searches; revenue share with instructors who recommend it to learners.

- **When to get in** : there's no rush. This business follows the test calendar and has no window; the one thing to check is whether the local transport authority will publish routes itself (if it does, the business is gone).

- **What would show you're wrong** : if Turas collects dozens of ratings in the next month and stays in the top 20 of the Ireland Navigation chart, it shows that "more detailed and more honest" can win volume in a crowded small market, and copying the model in another country is worth serious thought. Conversely, if it drops out of the Top Grossing chart before December, that suggests the market belongs to the top two or three players.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Reddit r/Irishdrivingtest developer self-promotion** : search snippet contains 'Thanks to your support my Ireland Driving Routes app has now x2 supported centres. Come and try Turas 1.1!' (early November); Reddit returned 403, the body text and upvote count weren't read

- **Verified** **Store search + low-competition category chart** : the name directly includes the keyword Driving Test Routes; placed in the Navigation category, it reached the top 16–25 of the IE free chart early on (apptail, appstore library)

- Inferred **Website SEO (a page per test centre plus guide articles)** : turas.pro/driving-test-routes/ lists pages for 51 test centres, plus guides; how much traffic this brings is unverified

- **Verified:** **Product Hunt** : launched 2026-10-29, 1 votes (nicheloom)

- Inferred **Policy timing: 11-01 driving licence rule change** : people applying for their third or fourth driving licence must have taken a test within the past two years, affecting about 38k people (Irish Star 10-31). That is exactly when it first charted in Top Grossing: 11-01

## Turas: Driving Test Routes (iOS id6816729591) research report

> Store checked: the appstore library was scanned across all storefronts. This app is listed only in Ireland (ie) and has only charted in ie. The competitor comparison covers ie and gb. Data as of 2026-11-06.

### One line

An iPhone voice navigation app for Irish driving test routes: pick a test centre, press Go, and it walks learners through the routes they might get, like car navigation. It announces roundabout exits, speed limit changes, STOP lines, and where reversing and turning happen. Launched 2026-10-19, built solo by indie developer Maksym (listed as Maxim) Myronenko.

**Verdict: it hasn't taken off yet.** Zero ratings. Its Top Free ranking dropped from 24 to 194. Its Top Grossing position comes from the low bar of Ireland's Navigation category chart. The only real signal is that **it charted in Top Grossing in Nov 1** . That day coincided with two things: the 1.1 update raised the covered test centres from 23 to 51 (the store listing says 55), and Ireland's new licence rule took effect. It beats competitors on product detail and is honest in its labelling, but the niche is already crowded, and most of the market belongs to the UK's Route-Led.

Source: appstore library chart_rank / app_day (2026-10-28 to 11-06). The apptail.io page also recorded ie Navigation Top Free #16 shortly after launch (around October 21 to 26, 1.0.1).

How to read these numbers:

- **Low bar to entry.** On the ie Navigation Top Grossing chart in 11-02, #2 is The Irish Test Routes App (only 4 ratings), and #75 is another small rival, Ireland Driving Test Routes (3 ratings). A category chart this thin means a handful of sales is enough to reach the top 50. The rank shows it's selling, but the volume is probably small (inferred).

- **Downloads are falling.** Over 10 days on the Top Free chart it slid from 24 to 194, as the organic traffic and Reddit post traffic from its first two weeks faded. 11-01 to 11-03 it returned to 28–35, which lines up with the 1.1 release and new posts.

- **Zero ratings.** The app doesn't prompt users to rate it, at least not yet.

### 2. Competitors: who else is doing the same thing

The RSA doesn't publish test routes. Each centre has roughly 15–20 routes (per a former examiner on Reddit). Turning those routes into a paid navigation product has been done for over five years:

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (source) | How it differs from Turas |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Driving Test Routes App** (Route-Led Group, UK) | iOS / Android | 2021-03 | gb 8,971 ratings, ie 412; ie Education Top Free 3–10; **ie overall Top Grossing 114–179** ; Play global 872k installs, 7 days +6,656 (appstore / googleplay library, 11-06) | The market leader, operating in both the UK and Ireland on a subscription model. It runs an affiliate SEO site (download links on irishdrivingtestroutes.com carry affiliate utm tags). Reddit users complain it is laggy, has a poor UI, and that routes are "not real test routes". |
| **The Irish Test Routes App** (Stephen McEvoy, driving instructor) | iOS / Android | iOS 2022-03 (started during the pandemic) | ie Navigation Top Grossing #2–5 (present for 10 days); iOS only 4 ratings; Play about 22k installs (googleplay library) | A local Irish instructor team updates routes monthly, stressing that they are "not AI guesses". About €15. The same person also released an N Ireland version 2026-04. It is Turas's direct rival on the same category chart. |
| **Ireland Driving Test Routes** (Mohamed Fayed) | iOS / Android | iOS 2026-03-01 | ie Navigation Top Grossing #23–191; 3 ratings. 2026-02 posted an "I made an app" thread on r/Irishdrivingtest, with 93 upvotes and 29 comments. | The playbook is nearly identical to Turas (solo developer, turning instructor YouTube videos into digital routes, self-promotion on Reddit), launched 7 months earlier. Its site drivingtestroutesapp.ie claims "all centres covered, community verified". |
| **Driving Test Routes Ireland** (Vavien Technology) | iOS | 2025-12 | ie 46 ratings; Education Top Grossing #39–76 | Uses the Education category and does the same thing |
| **Irish Driving Test Routes IE** (VAROL AKSOY) | iOS | 2026-03 | IE 14 ratings | The developer has a pile of small apps (Irish theory test, Dutch theory test, GLP-1 logbook, UK routes), a volume play |
| **RouteBuddy** (New Driver Programme, UK) | iOS / Android | 2021 | Unverified; the website has posted IE videos since 2026-07 | Routes are "generated by analysing road data around test centres", not recorded from real tests |
| **IDTR App** (EDT Ireland,drivingtestroutes.ie) | iOS / Android | Not verified | Not verified | From a driving school, includes a test-day survival guide |
| **Free alternatives** | YouTube / Google My Maps | — | Top-voted Reddit replies often say "don't buy, draw it yourself in My Maps" | Free, but you need someone reading the route aloud beside you, and there is no voice navigation |

Related but not a direct competitor: Driving Test Cancellations IE (tracks cancelled test slots, ie 164 ratings, Utilities Top Grossing #3–6). This shows Irish learners will pay for test-related tools.

**Nothing deliberately copied from Turas.** My earlier recollection that "drivingtestroutesapp.ie is a shell site launched around the same time (id6759071151)" is wrong. That was Mohamed Fayed's app, launched 2026-03-01, 7 months before Turas, and unrelated to it. If anything, Turas is the late entrant in this niche. nicheloom also wrote that it came "148 days after the earliest competitor". In the UK, a large batch of similar apps has appeared over 2026 years (Drivaro, Rodic, PassRank, SteerClear, Drive Academy and others, per the appstore library), so the niche is already crowded.

### 3. Growth levers: where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit r/Irishdrivingtest developer self-promotion | Search results show post snippets: "Thanks to your support my Ireland Driving Routes app has now x2 supported centres. Come and try Turas 1.1!" (appearing in the sidebars and recommendation slots of 1w4gogt, 1hv01nv and other posts, corresponding to a launch in early November 1.1). Reddit returned 403 to our scrape, so post bodies, upvote counts and comments were not read. | Yes |
| Store search / category chart exposure | The name directly uses the keyword "Driving Test Routes". In the early days it reached the top 20–25 on the ie Navigation Top Free chart. It chose the Navigation category over Education, avoiding the Education chart where Route-Led sits. | Partly (whether choosing Navigation was to avoid Route-Led is inference) |
| Website SEO | turas.pro has a page for each test centre (/driving-test-routes/, 51 centres) plus guide articles (/guides/how-driving-test-routes-work/). A Jina search for "Turas driving test routes app Ireland" ranks it first or second. | Yes (whether it drove traffic is unverified) |
| Product Hunt | Launched 2026-10-29, 1 votes (nicheloom) | Yes, but it didn't bring much |
| Paid acquisition / creators / media | X (x-radar, 60 days) and TikTok (TikHub) turn up nothing for Turas; no media coverage found | None found |
| Timing | 2026-11-01 Ireland's new licence rule takes effect: people applying for a third or fourth driving licence must have taken a test within the first two years. About 38k long-term licence holders who never took the test are being pushed into it (Irish Star 2026-10-31). The national average wait for a test is about 11.7 weeks; the longest wait at Raheny was 25 weeks (Irish Times 2026-06). A re-test costs €85. | The rule change is confirmed; how much it affects Turas sales is inference |

### 4. Why it's gaining traction (at its current scale)

1. **A real need, and people will pay.** About 388k Irish licence holders (IRHA, 2026-06), with 2025 years seeing over 220k repeat test-takers; a wait of 12 weeks and a re-test at €85. Passing the first time saves far more than €9.99. The Irish Test Routes App has only 4 ratings yet holds Top Grossing #2–5, showing this small chart can sustain real paid sales.

2. **1.1 update filled the coverage gap.** 1.0 covered only 23 centres and 274 routes (the old listing captured by apptail). 1.1 jumped to 51–55 centres and 616 routes, and "From real tests" routes rose from 185 to 318. 11-01 first charted in Top Grossing on the same day as this update. When coverage is incomplete, many people who find the app still can't buy it.

3. **Caught the rule change.** When 11-01 took effect, long-term licence holders who avoided the test were pushed into it. Demand lifted for a few days (inferred; no direct purchase data).

4. **Community cold start.** Like Mohamed Fayed, it posted self-promotion in the niche r/Irishdrivingtest community. There, "which route app is worth buying" is a recurring topic, and posting costs almost nothing.

5. **Pricing is easier to accept.** A one-time payment of €9.99 (30 days) or €12.99 (60 days), no renewal, stated as "nothing renews". The all-centres lifetime price is €29.99. Competitors' subscriptions (one Reddit user cited €15/month) have drawn complaints. Selling a one-off pass for the test period matches learners who only need it for a few weeks.

### 5. Differentiation

How Turas differs from competitors:

- **Honest labelling.** Each route is marked either "From real tests" or "Practice route", and the app states "No route is made up by AI" and "no app can be RSA-approved". The biggest complaint about route apps on Reddit is that routes are "not real" and the app is a scam, and Turas addresses this head-on.

- **Navigation is detailed.** Routes match to OpenStreetMap roads, not raw GPS traces. It reports exits and lanes at every roundabout, announces speed-limit changes, STOP signs and school zones, and reroutes you when you drift off course. Supports CarPlay, Dynamic Island and the lock screen, offline voice guidance, and auto-ducks your music while it talks. You can run a route in simulation at home first. The 1.1 version also adds "how was your drive" stats (slow driving, long stops, speeding).

- **One-time purchase, no subscription.**

- **Data updates itself.** Users can choose to share their own driving traces. The developer checks them weekly and updates routes after manual review.

**Is this why it took off?** Only partly. It sold with zero ratings, mostly because the demand is real and the small charts are easy to get onto. The product details help conversion: after a free download, users see the route previews and learner tips in the app before deciding to buy. But its route data isn't exclusive. Stephen McEvoy has a team of instructors, Fayed digitized routes from instructor videos, and Route-Led has been doing it for five years. So the differentiation is in experience and trust, not data, and there's no moat. The recall claim that "the core moat is real route data" doesn't hold.

### 6. Visibility

**Almost nobody knows about it yet.** Zero ratings; 0 Product Hunt votes 1; no hits on X or TikTok; no media coverage; revenue isn't public (apptail shows "$-1", meaning no estimate). It has only appeared a few times on r/Irishdrivingtest, and those were posts by the developer.

### 7. What others can borrow

- Test routes that "the authority won't publish but candidates will pay for certainty" follow the same structure in the UK (DVSA), Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US DMV. But the UK is already crowded (at least a dozen similar apps launched in 2026), and in the US RouteBuddy is doing SEO.

- Selling one-time passes tied to the test date (30 days, 60 days) plus a lifetime tier is easier for users than a subscription and builds more trust.

- Make honesty the selling point: label clearly which routes are recorded from real tests, and state that the content isn't AI-generated and isn't officially endorsed. In a category that gets called a "scam," this is what converts people.

- Pick the niche Navigation chart. The bar to chart is low, and ranking alone brings exposure.

- Build SEO pages for each test centre to catch long-tail searches like "<test centre name> driving test routes."

### 8. Still unclear

- Real sales are unknown. Ranking #15–45 on Top Grossing roughly corresponds to a few sales a day (estimate).

- Where the 1.1 version's 133 new "real tests" routes came from in two weeks (instructor YouTube videos? user-uploaded traces?) is unverified. It's also unclear whether the route data carries copyright or plagiarism risk.

- I couldn't read the Reddit post bodies, upvote counts or posting times (Reddit returned 403). Whether there was a separate launch post on 1.0 is unverified.

- Developer identity: the recall says he's an individual Ukrainian developer based in Kyiv. On LinkedIn there's a Maksym Myronenko (AI product manager at Universe Group, Ukraine). Whether it's the same person is unverified. The developer's other app is a song-guessing game (2026-09).

- How much the new rules are driving sales can't be separated out. The Top Free chart is falling, and whether Top Grossing holds needs another two to three weeks of data.

- There's no Android version, and competitors are all cross-platform, so this demand is going unmet.
