Dronar: Air Raid & Drone Map · Alexandra Litvinova

What map are Ukrainians checking in the middle of the night: a new "drone track" app is climbing, but it's the whole category that's rising

What it is A threat map over Ukraine: it automatically reads 51 public Telegram monitoring channels, plots drone and missile positions and tracks, overlays official alerts. Free, no ads, no account.

Why it's taking off The large-scale energy strikes in early November lifted the whole category at once. By seeding store keywords separately in Ukrainian and Russian and riding the low-bar Ukraine News chart, it captured a slice of the surge, about a tenth of the leaders' volume.

DHow you could ride it Don't build another one in Ukraine. What's worth copying is the structure: automatically turn scattered public information into a map, and seed store pages with local search terms. Move it to outage, wildfire, or flood scenarios where locals are checking a dozen groups, and ideally have a source of information nobody else has access to.

Grade D: the demand is real, but the official app has added track maps, and three or four standalone apps already have tens of thousands of ratings. As a late entrant it gets a tenth of the share. Traffic follows air raids entirely, the raw material is other people's channels, and missing a report is very costly, so following it isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

From the night of 2026 Nov 3 into the early morning of 4, Russia launched 310 attack and decoy drones at Ukraine. The air force said it shot down 272, 19 sites were hit, and several cities lost power (Kyiv Post, The Defense Post, NV, 11-04). That night, every "alert + flight map" app in the Ukraine App Store saw its new rating count double at once. A small app, "Dronar", launched in October 5, also moved: its daily new ratings jumped from single digits to 28, 47 and 30, pushing it into the Ukraine News free chart at #8. Below: what it is, why it's growing now, where it ranks in this category, and whether this business is worth chasing.

What people were looking for that night

Ukrainians' old way of deciding whether to head to the shelter is watching dozens of Telegram monitoring channels: the air force, eTryvoga, and local channels run by volunteers in each region, where someone posts when a Shahed is flying toward a village. The problem is that there are too many channels and they're too scattered. A user in Zaporizhzhia left a very typical review on a similar app:

With this app I don't have to check the TG channels every 5 minutes to see what's in the air. I live in Zaporizhzhia, and things keep flying over. — Review of the similar app Neboskhyl on the Ukraine App Store (10-30)

This kind of app does exactly that: it reads the channels for you and turns the text into dots and lines on a map.

What it is

In one line: a threat map over Ukraine, with drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and guided bombs marked separately, with data assembled automatically from public Telegram channels.

The store page and the website (dronar.cloud) spell it out: the map shows threats reported in the last 15 minutes, fading as they age; states and districts are colored by official alert status; tap a target to see which towns it passed and how many channels confirmed it; "Replay mode" plays back recent tracks at 1x / 4x / 16x. The data comes from 51 public channels, with no radar of its own. There are also a lock screen Live Activity and widgets, and the latest 1.4.1 (11-06) added "distance from you" and alert circles for nearby threats.

It emphasizes three things: no account, no ads, no tracking, with location kept only on the phone; and it's completely free with no in-app purchases. The last paragraph of the store page also says plainly that it is not an official warning system, that positions are estimates, and that they may be delayed or wrong.

The developer account is "Alexandra Litvinova." The same account has another app, the parenting app "Dumfy: Baby Tracker," launched in August with zero ratings. It looks like one person testing several directions (Apple lookup, 11-06).

272 of the 276 ratings came from the Ukraine storefront. On the Ukraine News free chart it climbed from #12 10-28 to #8–9,11-06 on 11-02 to 11-05, peaking at #10; on 11-03 and 11-04 it briefly entered the Ukraine overall free chart at #154 and #135. Lithuania, Poland, and Czechia's News charts also list it, at #37 to #199, but those storefronts have almost no ratings, probably expats and people following the war who installed it casually (speculation). Average rating 4.42.

There aren't many reviews, and they cut both ways: "Good that it hasn't piled on too many features" and "This is strong," but also "There's lag, and the Shahed is shown wrong" (10-16) and "Settlement names are too small to read even when zoomed in" (10-28).

Why now: the whole category is rising

Put the same category side by side and Dronar's curve stops looking unusual:

(Daily ratings on the Ukraine App Store, 11-06)

Everyone's volume surged around 11-03, lining up exactly with the two nights of large energy strikes. In October Ukraine also split alerts into yellow and red levels, and pre-winter outages increased, so interest in "what exactly is flying toward me" spiked.

The most striking one is Neboskhyl: it launched just four days before Dronar and gained 1,307 ratings in 7 days, more than ten times Dronar's. So Dronar didn't break out on its own. It got a small share in a crowded bay when the tide came in.

Where users come from

Store search, with keywords seeded by language. The English name is "Dronar: Air Raid & Drone Map," subtitle "Missiles & Shaheds in Ukraine"; the Ukrainian page is "Dronar: карта дронів і ракет" (drone and missile map), and the Russian page is "Dronar: шахеды и ракеты онлайн". That covers the "map, Shahed, missile" terms Ukrainians actually search.

The Ukraine News chart has a low bar. Just 30 to 50 new ratings a day can put you in the top 10, and being on the chart brings chart exposure, so its ranking looks bigger than its actual volume.

No sign of other channels. X, TikTok, Reddit, and Ukrainian tech media don't surface it; whether it's promoted inside Telegram channels isn't visible from outside (unverified).

Where the money comes from: it charges nothing, others do

Dronar makes no money right now. But its competitors aren't afraid to charge: Dron Alerts has a PRO subscription at $3.99, ad removal at $3.99, and a "patron" tier at $4.99–17.99; Neboskhyl has a monthly subscription at $1.99–2.99 and lifetime at $5.99–9.99 (Ukraine App Store listing, 11-06). So the category can monetize; the buyers just aren't always satisfied. Under Neboskhyl, someone wrote "Bought the subscription, and it shows things that aren't real."

The sentence safety tools fear most is: a Shahed just flew overhead and the app said the city's airspace was all clear. Accuracy and timeliness are the entire product. Once you charge, every missed report becomes a one-star review.

Who it's competing with

  • The official app "Повітряна тривога": 348k ratings, #21 on Ukraine's overall free chart. Starting 10-17 it added a "rough map of enemy drone and missile movements," built by the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Ministry of Defense, the air force, and several IT firms (quoting the prime minister via UNN). The standalone apps' biggest selling point is now free from the government.
  • Dron Alerts and RadarUA: launched months earlier, tens of thousands of ratings, #1 on News and the top 10 overall. One has a DeepState occupied-territory layer and "how long until it reaches home"; the other has a proximity alert radius and attack statistics. Both are also on Android.
  • Neboskhyl: started the same week, with an extra standalone Apple Watch version that can judge whether a target is heading toward your home or office.
  • A dozen small apps and websites: eAlert, Air Alert Radar, КОНТУР, Мапа шахедів і ракет; web: alerts.in.ua, neptun.in.ua.
  • The Telegram channels themselves: everyone's raw material comes from here.

Dronar's only real differences: replay mode, each target confirmed by several channels, uncertainty ranges drawn on danger zones, and a stronger privacy angle. The core features are everywhere.

If it were you

D. You can study this app, but don't copy it. The need is real and urgent, but this map already has the official app and three or four independent apps with tens of thousands of ratings. A late entrant gets a tenth of what the others get. Traffic follows air raids, the raw data is other people's Telegram channels, and mistakes cost lives.

Who it suits: people who already have a first-hand, stable public-safety source (government feeds, volunteer networks), or who run a local monitoring channel. You have something others can't get.

Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to build another one in Ukraine (the official apps have already entered); anyone hoping to make subscription money (one missed alert and paying users become the harshest reviewers); anyone not local and without the language or channel ecosystem.

How to do it: What you can learn is the structure, not this topic. Automatically turn public information scattered across chat groups, channels, and government sites into one map, then write store pages using the words locals actually search, and go after category charts in small countries where the entry bar is low. The better bet is another "sudden event + fragmented information" scenario: power outages, wildfires, floods, aftershocks, road closures, provided locals are currently scrolling through a dozen groups for it (inference; I haven't verified which products already exist in each region).

How to get users: mainly store search. Write a separate name and subtitle for each language, covering "map / live / specific threat names." The days an event happens account for a year's worth of downloads, so the version has to be ready before then.

Deadline: There's no universal deadline. The window for this category is the event itself. Launching after the event arrives is too late, and the leaders lock in within a few months.

Where my read could be wrong: (1) After air raids paused for a while, Dronar's and Neboskhyl's daily new ratings still held above twice their pre-attack levels, which suggests daily-use tools, not just event-driven downloads. (2) A later independent app catching up to Dron Alerts within a month or two on one clear new feature (say, a watch app, offline mode, or better predictions) would show there's room for late entrants. (3) If the official app's track map is widely criticized as inaccurate and users switch back to independent apps, the independent space is bigger than it looks.

Where users come from
  • Confirmed Store search + localized ASO: each language uses its own name. Ukrainian: "Dronar: карта дронів і ракет"; Russian: "Dronar: шахеды и ракеты онлайн"; subtitle "Missiles & Shaheds in Ukraine." Nearly all ratings come from the ua store.
  • Confirmed Category driven by events: 11-03 to 04, Russia's large-scale energy strikes (ISW, The Defense Post). On the same days, daily new ratings for every app in the category doubled together, and Dronar went from single digits to 28 to 47.
  • Inferred Exposure from Ukraine's News chart: dozens of new ratings a day were enough to reach #8 to #12 in News. Being charted likely creates a feedback loop of more exposure.
  • Inferred Category awareness lifted by the official app's track map: after 10-17 Air Raid Alert added a track map (UNN), media coverage likely increased searches for related terms.
  • Inferred Social, creators, ads: 0 x-radar posts, nothing findable on TikTok, nothing on Reddit or in media, and no ad library tracking.

One line

A Ukrainian "air raid alert + live drone/missile track" map. It's completely free, with no ads and no account. Data is parsed automatically from 51 public Telegram monitoring channels. It hasn't "taken off" in any dramatic sense: it's a seventh- or eighth-place follower in a category that's surging. Its growth is the category rising, and it captures roughly a tenth of what the leaders get.

1. What the product is

  • Published 2026-10-05, developer account "Alexandra Litvinova" (id6796051359). The same account also has a baby-care app, "Dumfy: Baby Tracker" (2026-08-29 listed, 0 ratings, website dumfy.com). So the data card's "only 1 app by this developer" is wrong: there are actually 2. It looks like one indie developer testing several directions (Apple lookup). Whether the account name matches a model with the same name online can't be confirmed (unverified, most likely just a coincidence).
  • Features (from the website www.dronar.cloud/ and store description): threats reported in the last 15 minutes appear on the map and fade with time. Classified as Shahed/jet drones, FPV, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and guided bombs. Official alerts shown by oblast/district. "Danger zones" estimate where a target probably is now, based on the positions and speeds from several channels. Lock-screen Live Activity / Dynamic Island (iOS 18, Ukraine only), home-screen and lock-screen widgets. Tap a single threat to see its track, the settlements it passes, and which channels confirmed it. "Recording mode" replays at 1×, 4×, or 16×.
  • Data source: we have no radar of our own. 7×24 reads 51 public Telegram channels (the Ukrainian Air Force, eTryvoga, national monitoring channels, and local observation channels for 13 regions), and automatically turns the posts into flight tracks.
  • Business model: free, no in-app purchases, no ads, no tracking. No monetization yet.
  • Shipping fast: 11-06 is already at 1.4.1 (more than 4 versions in one month). The latest version adds "how far you are" and nearby-threat alert rings.

2. Data: how much it grew

  • Rating count (all storefronts combined, data card / app_day): 10-28 149 → 11-06 276. Over the last 7 days +123, with 10-29 to 11-02 new ratings per day, about 0 to 6,11-03 9,11-04 28,11-05 47,11-06 29 to 30. Nearly all from the Ukrainian store (ua: 272 entries; us: 2; pl: 3).
  • Charts (chart_rank, ua): Ukraine News free chart 10-28 #12 → 11-02 to 05 #8 to 9 → 11-06 #10. 11-03 and 11-04 briefly entered the Ukraine overall free chart at #154 and #135. Other countries (Lithuania, Poland, Czechia) only reached #37 to #199 in the News category, and those storefronts have almost no ratings. This is probably Ukrainian diaspora and people following the war downloading it, so the volume is small.
  • Average rating 4.42 (277 reviews, Apple lookup).

Key comparison: during the same period the whole category was rising (daily new ratings in the ua store, appstore database app_day).

All the apps spiked together around 11-03, lining up with Russia's large-scale drone attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities from 11-03 to 04 (ISW 11-04 assessment: understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensi…; The Defense Post 11-04 "Russia Fires 310 Drones"; NY Post 11-03). Neboskhyl and Dronar launched in the same week. Neboskhyl's rating count grew by 1,307 in 7 days, while Dronar grew by only 122, about 10 times less.

3. Competitors

The category is very crowded. There's the official app, plus several independent apps built by indie developers 2026 years ago:

  • Air Raid Alert (Ajax Systems + Ministry of Digital Transformation): listed 2022-02, 348k ratings, #21 on the Ukraine overall free chart. 2026-10-17 added a map of enemy drone and missile movements, built by the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Ministry of Defense, the Air Force and several IT firms (UNN cites PM Koretskyi: unn.ua/en/news/a-map-showing-the-movement-of-drones-and-miss…). The official app now ships with a track map, which blunts the biggest selling point of the standalone app.
  • Dron Alerts: launched 2026-01, 18k ratings, #1 News, #2 overall free chart. Dark map, district-level alerts, separately colored red alert levels, DeepState occupied-zone layer, threat counter, distance to "home" and estimated arrival time.
  • RadarUA: launched 2026-07, 14k ratings, #1 News, #6 overall free chart. Also on Android (Google Play com.radarua.app). Has a proximity alert radius, attack timelines, and statistics.
  • Neboskhyl: launched 2026-10-01, 2,250 ratings, #2 News. Adds a standalone Apple Watch app, whether a target is heading toward home or work, altitude and sudden-drop alerts, and Live Activity. It started the same week as Dronar, has more features, and is growing 10× faster.
  • eAlert (Wild Pluto) 10k ratings; Мапа тривог віджет (Stfalcon) 5,253 ratings. Plus a dozen or so smaller apps, including Air Raid Map: Ukraine, Air Alert Radar, Sych, Alert+, and Мапа шахедів і ракет (appstore database).
  • Websites: alerts.in.ua (alert map), kontur.systems, neptun.in.ua (Shahed tracking refreshed every 5 seconds).
  • The original source: the regional Telegram monitoring channels themselves. Dronar's data comes from here.

4. How users came in (growth levers)

  • Store search + localized ASO (confirmed): Different names and subtitles per language. The English listing is "Dronar: Air Raid & Drone Map" with subtitle "Missiles & Shaheds in Ukraine"; the Ukrainian page is "Dronar: карта дронів і ракет"; the Russian page is "Dronar: шахеды и ракеты онлайн" (confirmed from the App Store multi-language pages in search results). Together these cover the terms Ukrainians actually search: карта / шахеды / ракеты / тривога. The Ukraine News category has a very low bar: a few dozen new ratings a day can reach the top 10, and once charted, the app gets visibility from the chart.
  • Category event spike (confirmed): All the visible spikes happened during the energy strike days 11-03~05. October also brought Ukraine's two-level air alert system (yellow/red, same UNN report), plus emergency power cuts, so interest in "what exactly is flying in" surged.
  • Demand spillover from the official app (inferred): 10-17 The official Air Raid Alert app added a flight-path map and got media coverage, which made "flight-path maps" known to more people. More people searching related terms means small apps get a share of search traffic too (not verified).
  • Channels we couldn't find: X-radar shows "Dronar" searched 0 times in the last 30 days. TikTok returns no related videos. Reddit and Ukrainian tech media (DOU etc.) have no coverage. No evidence of ads (our ad library only tracks products on our list, so not finding ads doesn't mean there were none).

5. Why it took off (and why only this much)

  1. The demand is real and urgent: in autumn 2026 Russia changed its air strike tactics, and 11-03~04 brought another wave of large-scale energy strikes. Ukrainians have to decide every day whether to go to a shelter. The category's rating growth doubled on the same day (app_day).
  2. The Ukraine News category has a low bar: 30~50 new ratings a day is enough to reach #8, so Dronar's chart position looks bigger than its actual size.
  3. Well executed: free, no ads, no account, supports iPad and light/dark mode, and shipped more than 4 versions in one month. Rating 4.4.
  4. But it is a follower: Neboskhyl, listed the same week, grew 10 times faster. Dron Alerts and RadarUA already have tens of thousands of ratings, and the official app added a flight-path map. Its growth was mostly a passive share of the category's rising tide.

6. Differentiation

Compared with competitors, the only differences worth naming are: a replay mode (1x/4x/16x), showing how many channels confirmed each threat, a "danger zone" uncertainty range, and an explicit privacy stance (reports only the district, not the exact location). The core features (parsing Telegram channels into a track, official alerts, Live Activities, widgets, distance alerts) are all shared by competitors, and Neboskhyl also has Apple Watch. These differences are not why it grew; category demand and ASO were.

7. Visibility

Few people know about it yet. Revenue is zero and not public. X, TikTok, Reddit, and media searches don't surface it; only store-mirror sites like appstoretracker and applion index it. But the category is already crowded (a dozen similar apps, and the official app has joined), so copying is the norm, and it is itself one of the copiers.

8. What to borrow

  • The playbook for "event-driven utility apps": find a sudden public safety need, automatically aggregate scattered public sources (Telegram channels, government feeds) onto one map, seed keywords in the local language, and go after the low-bar category charts of smaller countries.
  • The same structure can be applied to other "public intel aggregation maps" (disasters, power outages, wildfires, earthquakes, traffic closures), but only where there is urgent local demand.
  • Lesson: winner-takes-most happens fast in categories like this. Late entrants without a clear feature difference get only leftover scraps of traffic, and monetization is hard (users are very sensitive to ads or paywalls in safety apps).

9. Uncertain

  • The developer's real identity and location, and why the same account is also making a parenting app (not verified).
  • Whether it was promoted in Telegram channels or partnered with monitoring channels (no evidence, and Telegram can't be searched).
  • Whether users stick around after the strikes stop, and whether it will ever monetize (currently explicitly free, no in-app purchases).
