"Way better than the real one": a Zurich high schooler used Claude to rebuild the whole canton's school intranet app
What it is An unofficial iOS client for the unified school intranet used by high schools and vocational schools in the canton of Zurich: timetable, grades, absences, Moodle, plus social features between classmates like pets, card skins, rankings and school-wide polls.
Why it took off The official app is hard to use, the old student-made alternative stopped updating a year ago and broke when the new school year started, and this one filled that gap right as the new term began. The author shipped a dozen-plus versions in a month with Claude, the social features got classmates to pull each other in, and they posted daily on TikTok, tagging school names, in local dialect.
CHow you could follow it If you're still in school and can code, find a school system people are forced to use that's bad and whose old alternative has gone stale, then build a better client around the back-to-school window that gets classmates playing together, and push it on TikTok by school name in local slang.

Every student at every high school and vocational school in the canton of Zurich has to open the same school intranet daily to check timetables, grades and absences, and the official app has only 3.3 stars. In 2026 October, a student wrote an unofficial version and used TikTok in Swiss German to call classmates to download it. In a month it reached 55 ratings and 4.67 stars and stayed in the top 30 of the Swiss Education Top Free chart. What's worth looking at is the playbook: find a school system everyone is forced to use and that does it badly, plug into the moment the old alternative breaks, and add a layer of social features between students. Below: how it came up, and whether outsiders can copy it.
Oct 6, seven TikToks
The app was listed on 2026-10-05. The next day, the TikTok account @tam.intranet.sekll posted 7 videos in one go. The most-viewed one had just one line: "Eifach TAM Intranet Sek II im app store igeh oder de Link i de Kommentär" (just search TAM Intranet Sek II in the App Store, or use the link in the comments), tagged #gymi #kantonsschulelimmattal #kantonsschule, with 5,143 views and 196 likes. Another was more direct:
Ladet eu alli mini Intranet app abe, sehr viel Ziit investiert und sie isch um WELTE besser als die echti… Everyone download my intranet app, I've put so much time into it, and it's WAY better than the real one…
After that, roughly every 1–3 days, 3–5 posts: feature teasers ("you'll soon be able to customize your pet, this is just a preview"), answers to questions, casual videos shot lying in bed. By 11-05 there were 50 posts total, about 62k views, and 189 followers. Those numbers mean nothing elsewhere, but its target audience is students at a few dozen Kantonsschulen in Zurich, and one or two thousand views per post already covers that circle quite well.
The developer on the App Store is called Thomas Graf, with only this one app under his name. 10-17 has a five-star review titled "BESTE INTRANET APP", body "Han sie zwar selber programmiert aber trotzdem" (even though I programmed it myself, still five stars), by a reviewer named Isaigraf. Taken together, it's most likely a student who wrote it, with the developer account under a parent's name (inference, unverified). The same day, a TikTok post said "Please leave a good review, thanks 🥹".
What it is
The canton's high schools and vocational schools all use one school intranet called Intranet Sek II (run by TAM / IN2), where timetables, grades and absences live, and students have no choice. This app logs in with the student's school credentials (including Microsoft two-factor) to pull the data, and rebuilds it:
- Timetable: day and week views, with substitutions, cancelled classes and exams marked, plus home-screen widgets and Live Activities;
- Grades: weighted averages and Swiss-specific Pluspunkte, with manual grade entry and reverse calculation of "what you need on the next test to hit your target";
- Absences: one tap to generate an excuse-note PDF; also connects to Moodle and commute routes.
At this point it's just "a better official app". What really sets it apart is the second layer: Community (school-wide polls, idea submissions, class views, class-vs-class comparison), Studio (share study materials to earn TAM coins), pets, card skins, rankings. The store page states it is "not an official product of TAM, IN2, your school, or the canton of Zurich". German only, iOS only.
The money-making is small: TAM coin packs, a Community Plus annual subscription (20% more coins earned), card skins at CHF 1.20 each, and a class graduation-newspaper site called Maturaziitig where a whole class pays CHF 20 once. It has never charted in Switzerland's grossing chart, and revenue is probably very small (inference).
The update pace is absurdly fast: it went from 1.0 to 1.3.6 in a month, over a dozen versions. The author said on TikTok "Claude ah hintergrund" (Claude in the background). The notes for 11-05 read: "better class views and comparison on iPad, more complete class lists, commute routes no longer give outdated home-trip suggestions". A one-student product with the iteration rhythm of a small team.
Why this autumn
This spot used to be taken, and this autumn it happened to open up:
| Product | Current state |
|---|---|
| IN2 Mobile (official) | Swiss iOS store, 99 ratings, 3.32 stars, last updated 2026-05; full features but hard to use, no social layer |
| TAM Intranet (Schoolspace AG, the old student-founded alternative) | 625 ratings, 4.66 stars, but stalled since 3.0.2 for nearly a year; after school started, reviews complain new-term grades don't show and school-email login fails; only 7 new ratings in 1 days |
| Schoolspace (same team) | The team has moved on to selling B2B intranets to schools |
| Gymial (web) | Once had about 250 visitors a day; the author announced a shutdown because "we can no longer get timetable data" |
| PlusPoints scoring app | Ranked 5 on the Swiss Education Top Free chart, nearly 6,000 ratings, but scoring is manual and it doesn't connect to the school intranet |
(App Store Switzerland, 11-06; gymial.ch; schoolspace.ch)
August school starts, the old replacements broke and nobody fixed them, the official one is still a pain to use, and a month later this one goes live. Student reviews keep comparing it to the same two: "far better than in2mobile" and "better than the real intranet".
So it helps to separate why it took off: "it's maintained and works" is why people came, since the old competitor's users were already looking for a replacement; "social and gamified" is why it spread among classmates, since school-wide polls, class comparison and rankings only work if classmates use it together, and pets and card skins give people something to show off on TikTok. The first alone would slowly eat the old competitor's base; with the second, it squeezed into the top 30 of the education free chart within a month.
How big the numbers are
| Date | Swiss Education Top Free | Cumulative ratings | Version |

| 10-28 | 27 | 39 | 1.2.1 |
| 10-30 | 22 | 43 | 1.3 |
| 11-01 | 53 | 45 | 1.3.3 |

| 11-06 | 29 | 55 | 1.3.6 |
(App Store Switzerland)
7 days, 10 new ratings, charting in only one Swiss store. The Swiss Education Top Free chart has a low bar: over this period the official IN2 Mobile bounced between ranks 52 and 170, and #29 likely corresponds to tens to a couple hundred downloads a day (inference, unverified).
The reviews read like students: "goated intranet app", "jedes update machts die app besser und besser" (every update makes the app better and better), "Werauimmer du bisch, Dankeee! Du hesch mis lebe so vill eifacher gmacht" (whoever you are, thank you! You made my life so much easier). Someone also asked it to bring back the ranking feature.
Where users come from
Only one channel has evidence: the author's own TikTok. The approach is simple and hard for outsiders to copy:
- Swiss German colloquial speech, not standard German;
- tags use school names directly: #kantonsschulezürichnord #kantonsschuleenge #rämibüel #kantonsschulelimmattal;
- download links in comments, with captions repeatedly telling people to search the full name in the App Store;
- openly asking classmates to leave a good review.
The name was also chosen for search: "TAM Intranet Sek II" = the old competitor's name "TAM Intranet" + the official system name "Intranet Sek II", so students searching either will find it. How much traffic App Store search brings can't be seen. No ads or press coverage were found, and X had zero mentions in 30 days. Almost no one outside knows about it.
The risks are spelled out
- The data could be cut off at any time. It pulls data through students' own school logins, not an official API. Gymial shut down for exactly that reason; if IN2 or the canton tightens things, it could stop working overnight. The French precedent is more direct: a high schooler's Pronote alternative, "Papillon", went viral among French students in early 2025, and the Pronote vendor then published a note about "recommendations regarding Papillon", stressing that its own product was the one certified by the state.
- Copyright. The pet is a Totoro, and the author has said "I have no rights to it at all".
- The market is this small. One canton, one language, tens of thousands of students, and in-app purchases priced at a couple of francs.
If it were you
C: the playbook is worth learning, but following this one isn't worth it. It took off thanks to three things outsiders can't get: the author was the user, spoke classmates' dialect, and sat inside the school's TikTok circle; and it earns little while the data could be cut off at any time.
- Who it fits: students still in school (or recently graduated, still close to younger classmates) who can code; where your school or region forces a school system that happens to be bad and whose old alternative has stopped updating. For you, it's a good project to build a portfolio, gather users, and get the experience of "what I built is used school-wide".
- Who it doesn't fit: indie developers who want to make money from it; people outside that school circle who don't speak the local language; people unwilling to take on the risk of being shut down by the school or vendor at any time.
- How to do it: pick a mandatory school system with poor reviews, and check two things first: the official app's star rating, and whether the existing student alternative has stopped updating and whether reviews are complaining. The window is the term when the old alternative breaks. First make timetable, grades and widgets clearly better than the official app; then add what gets classmates to play together (class-wide polls, class comparison, rankings); monetize with cheap skins, coins and a "whole class pays once" graduation keepsake. Mind that the big systems already have players: France's Pronote has Papillon, and German-speaking areas have WebUntis with the open-source BetterUntis; the opening is more likely in small regions and small systems.
- How to get users: copy what it did: post on TikTok in local slang, tag school names, put the link in comments, name it after the system and the old competitor, and openly ask classmates to rate it. You need to be that student yourself; paid acquisition isn't worth it for an audience this small.
- When to be early: the first month or two after school starts. Timetables and grades matter most then, and that's when people most want to switch apps; miss this term and you wait for the next back-to-school season.
- What would mean you read it wrong: ① its ratings are still under 2027 by early 100 and it has dropped out of the top 100 on the free chart, meaning the Zurich circle is saturated and the ceiling in a small region is lower than it looks; ② the school or IN2 issues a notice restricting unofficial clients, or its login starts failing, meaning the lifeline of this kind of product isn't in its own hands; ③ the author's updates slow down, meaning one student can't sustain a dozen-plus versions a month, and the social layer won't keep people.

One line
An unofficial "Intranet Sek II" client written with Claude by a Zurich-canton high school student (inferred). It moves the official TAM/IN2 school intranet's timetable, grades, absences, and Moodle into a clean iOS app, then layers on school social features and gamification (TAM coins, pets, cards, rankings, a class graduation newspaper). The developer posted in Swiss German on TikTok every day. In one month it got 55 ratings and a 4.67-star average, and it held a steady spot at #22–57 on Swiss Education Top Free.
1. What it is
- Developer Thomas Graf, with this app as his only listing. 2026-10-05 launched; 2026-11-05 reached 1.3.6 (more than ten versions in one month. In the library, from 10-28 to 11-06 it went from 1.2.1 to 1.3.6). German only. (iTunes lookup; appstore.app_day)
- Features: timetable (day/week views, schedule changes, cancelled lessons, exams, home screen widgets and Live Activities), grades (weighted averages, Pluspunkte, self-entered grades, target-grade calculator), absences (generates excuse-letter PDFs), Moodle integration. Also Community (school-wide voting, idea submissions, class views and comparisons), Studio (share study materials to earn TAM coins), pets and cards, and a school route planner. Login goes through the school's own web login (including Microsoft MFA). (App Store description and update notes)
- Monetization: free to download. In-app purchases include TAM coin packs, a Community Plus annual subscription (+20% coin earnings), Maturaziitig (a standalone website for a class graduation newspaper, one-time CHF 20 for the whole class), and cards at CHF 1.20 each. The description states plainly that it is "not an official product of TAM, IN2, the school, or the Canton of Zurich."

- 7 new ratings in 10 days. Lookup shows a total of 55 ratings, average 4.67 (2026-11-06).
- Charted only in Switzerland, never on any Top Grossing chart. Revenue is likely very small.
- The bar for Swiss Education Top Free is low. On the same day, the official IN2 Mobile app (99 ratings, +0 over 7 days) also ranked #52–170, so #29 probably means a few dozen to a couple hundred downloads a day (inferred, not verified).
3. Competitors
| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IN2 Mobile (Gyselroth GmbH, official) | iOS / Android | 2021-08 | iOS Switzerland 99 rating, 3.32 stars; 11-06 Education Top Free chart #60; last updated 2026-05-20 | The official "modular dashboard." Full-featured but hard to use, with poor reviews. No social features, no gamification. |

| Gymial (web) | Web | 2019/2020 | About 250 daily visitors and roughly 350k total opens | Shutdown announced. The author said "there's no official channel to get timetable data anymore." Suggests switching to TAM-Intranet / IN2 Mobile, and using PlusPoints for grades. |

Takeaway: there are plenty of similar apps, but they all hit the same two problems. The official ones are hard to use, and the student-built ones are unmaintained (Schoolspace's team moved on to B2B, Gymial shut down). When school started in autumn 2026, this position was effectively open.
4. Growth: where users came from
Self-run TikTok, the only channel with evidence.
- Account @tam.intranet.sekll (the handle is the app name). Bio: "Für ALLE Zürcher Kantonsschulen ⌁ Stundenplan ⌁ Noten ⌁ Absenzen." 189 followers, 1685 likes, 51 videos (TikHub 2026-11-06).
- Cadence: 10-06, the day after launch, it posted 7 videos in a row. After that it posted 3–5 image posts or short videos about every 1–3 days. As of 11-05 it had 50 videos in total, with about 62k views overall. Top videos: 6950 (10-23), 6223 (10-21), 5138 (10-06).
- Approach: all posts use spoken Swiss German ("Ladet eu alli mini Intranet app abe… um WELTE besser als die echti" = "Everyone download my intranet app, it's far better than the real one"). Tags name specific Zurich schools (#kantonsschulelimmattal #kantonsschulezürichnord #kantonsschuleenge #rämibüel #gymi #intranet). Download links go in the comments. Posts preview features (custom pets, live widgets), answer questions, and show off "Claude running in the background."
- Directly asks for good reviews: one of the 10-17 posts says "(Und bitte e gueti bewertig dalah danke vielmals 🥹)" = "please leave a good rating, thanks so much." Another comment reads "Han sie zwar selber programmiert aber trotzdem" ("they programmed it themselves, but still five stars"). The developer (or an accomplice) also left a rating.
- Campus word of mouth: comments are all in student-style Swiss German ("goated intranet app", "Werauimmer du bisch, Dankeee!"). Features include school-wide voting, class comparisons, and rankings ("bring ranked … zrugg"). These naturally pull classmates in.
- Not found: ads (the appstore library has no paid acquisition records for it. The TikTok ad library only lists products targeting Europe, so a miss there doesn't mean no spend), press coverage, X discussion (x-radar: 30 posts in 0 days), Reddit/HN. Web search only turned up the App Store page and its own TikTok.
- "Name borrowing": the app name "TAM Intranet Sek II" combines the official system name "Intranet Sek II" with the old competitor's name "TAM Intranet." Students searching "TAM intranet" or "intranet sek" in the store will hit it. TikTok captions also keep telling people to search "TAM Intranet Sek II" in the App Store. How much traffic that brings can't be verified, but the naming is clearly aimed at search terms.
5. Why it took off
- A must-use, badly built official system: every Kantonsschule and vocational school in the Canton of Zurich requires Intranet Sek II for timetables, grades, and absences. The official IN2 Mobile has only 3.32 stars, and student reviews repeatedly say "viel besser als in2mobile" and "Besser als s echte intranet."
- Timing: the old unofficial client fell behind. Schoolspace's TAM Intranet stopped updating for about a year on 3.0.2. After the new semester started, grades didn't show and KZN email changes broke logins. Gymial announced it was shutting down because it couldn't access the data. It launched a month after the new school year began (August), right when the unhappy users were looking for an alternative.
- AI let one student ship more than ten versions in a month: TikTok calls it "Claude ah hintergrund" ("Claude in the background"), and the bio says "von @⁉️AI" ("by @⁉️AI"). From 10-05 to 11-05 it went from 1.0 to 1.3.6. Comments say "jedes update machts die app besser und besser" ("every update makes the app better and better"). The speed of iteration itself became a talking point in student circles.
- Social and gamification make it "the app everyone uses": pets, cards, rankings, TAM coins, school-wide voting, class comparisons. This isn't just a "better timetable." It's a small campus social product that requires getting classmates involved, and it gives people things to show off on TikTok.
- TikTok targets a very small audience precisely: the target users are students at dozens of Zurich schools. Tagging by school name and speaking in local dialect means that even a few thousand views per post is strong reach for this group.
- Actively asking for reviews keeps the rating at 4.67. That works well when there are only a few dozen ratings.
6. Differentiation
Compared with the official IN2 Mobile: it's easier to use and better looking, with widgets and Live Activities, a target-grade calculator, and excuse-letter PDF generation. Compared with Schoolspace's TAM Intranet: it's maintained (more than ten versions in a month vs. a year without updates), and it adds a whole layer of social and gamification features, plus a paid class graduation newspaper that only makes sense for graduating classes. That difference is why it took off, but the two causes need to be separated. "Maintained and working" is why people came (the old competitor broke). "Social and gamification" is why people spread it among classmates and had things to show off on TikTok. The first alone would only slowly eat into the old competitor's existing users. The second is what got it into the top 30 of Education Top Free within a month.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue isn't disclosed. No TrustMRR listing, and no media or major X accounts have written about it. It only circulates in Zurich student TikTok circles.
- No copycats found. The market is too small (just the Canton of Zurich, one language), so outsiders won't enter it. It is itself a follower of TAM Intranet / Schoolspace.
8. What to borrow
- The model: find a "mandatory-use" school or institutional system with a poor official experience (WebUntis, EduPage, Pronote, local SIS platforms), and build an unofficial client. First make it work well, look good, and have widgets, then layer on social and gamification. Monetize with cheap in-app purchases (skins, coins, small subscriptions) and a one-time, whole-class purchase of a graduation keepsake.
- Distribution: the developer is the user. Post daily on TikTok in local dialect, tagged by school name; drop the link in comments; openly ask classmates to leave good reviews.
- Name it to eat the system name and an old competitor's name; store search brings traffic on its own.
- Check the old competitors' shutdowns and bad reviews first. That's your window to get in.
9. Still unclear
- Who is the developer Thomas Graf: LinkedIn has a same-name teacher at Kantonsschule Wettingen (Aargau), but TikTok and the comments suggest students wrote it themselves. The developer account may be under a parent's name (inference, unverified).
- Actual downloads and revenue: the rating is only 55, it never charted on the bestseller list, so in-app purchase revenue should be small. How many copies the CHF 20 graduation newspaper sold is unclear.
- Risks: it relies on school web logins and unofficial endpoints. Gymial already shut down over 'can't get data.' If IN2 or the cantonal government tightens access or demands removal, it could break at any time. Also, the pet uses Totoro, and the author himself says 'I have no copyright on it at all.'
- Android: TikTok says they'll give Android a link (possibly a web version). I couldn't find it on Google Play.
